William P. “Bill” Thomas, 93, died Nov. 11, 2024, at Sandstone Heights Nursing Home, Little River. He was born on Oct. 7, 1931, in Ellinwood, the son of William A. and Marie (Schauf) Thomas. Bill attended St. Joseph Parochial School and graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1949.

After graduation, Bill was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served as a Sergeant in the anti-aircraft artillery division. He was stationed on a site out of Ft. Tilden in Canarsie, Brooklyn, N.Y., where he met and married Marie L. Rigat on Aug. 8, 1954, in Our Lady of Miracles R.C. Church in Brooklyn, N.Y.

They came back to Kansas, Friday, Aug. 13, 1954, after Bill was discharged from the Army and started farming south of Claflin, where he has been ever since.

Bill was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus where he served as financial secretary for 25 years. He also served on Logan Township Board as clerk for 25 years and was a school bus driver and bus supervisor for 25 years.

He was preceded in death by his spouse, Marie of almost 60 years who passed away March 17, 2014. Also preceding him in death were his parents, and two brothers, Michael and Robert.

Bill is survived by; a daughter, Susan (Tom) Blackshere of Salina; sons, Stephen Thomas of Pratt, and Tony Thomas of Claflin; two grandchildren, Brett (Kelsey) Thomas and Brock Thomas, all of Pratt; and two great-grandchildren, Braelynn and Brextyn Thomas.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024, with family receiving friends from 2 to 4 p.m., all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

A Graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 15, 2024, in Pleasant View Cemetery, Claflin, Kansas, with Father Terrance Klein presiding. Military honors will be conducted by Fort Riley Army Honor Guard.

Robert Louis “Bob” Eveleigh, 93, passed away November 11, 2024, at Wilson Care and Rehabilitation, Wilson, Kansas. He was born on October 25, 1931, in Barton County, to Frank and Liva Della (Sharp) Eveleigh. On August 24, 1954, he married Lorrayne Mills in Great Bend. She passed on January 21, 2021.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Bob served his country in the United States Army. He went on to work as a farmer and truck driver, owning and operating Eveleigh Trucking, as well as Eveleigh Hay Hauling in the 1980’s. Bob was a member of Foundry Methodist Church, Flying Farmers of America, and Million Miler Club, having driven over one million miles with the same Cat engine in his Kenworth truck. He loved taking care of his cattle, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include daughter, Michelle Al Ashry; two grandchildren, Bobby Eveleigh and wife Ploy of Florida, and Katie Nelson and husband Nick of Wilson; four great grandchildren, April Eveleigh, Emmalyn Eveleigh, Braden Nelson, and Blaine Nelson; sister, Dorothy McIntyre of Las Vegas, Nevada; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife; his parents; son, Todd Eveleigh; two brothers, John Eveleigh and Charles Woodrow Eveleigh; and six sisters, Ruby Bramel, Myrtle Eveleigh, Maude Habiger, Jessie Pedigo, Pearl Birzer, and Florence Saunders.

Michael Raye Scheuerman, age 75, former Hays, Kansas resident passed away on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Nursing Home in Amarillo, Texas.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He was born June 26, 1949, in LaCrosse, Kansas to Alvin and Clarinetta E. (Scheuerman) Scheuerman.&nbsp; He married Deborah (Roach) on January 31, 2016.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Michael grew up on a farm outside of Bison, Kansas.&nbsp; He attended Otis Grade School

and was a 1967 graduate of Otis High School.&nbsp; After graduation he enlisted in the U S Marine Corps and did his basic training in San Diego and his advanced infantry at Camp Pendleton.&nbsp; He served three years in active duty and served three years in reserves.&nbsp; One of his tour of duty he spent 12 months in Vietnam where he received a Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. &nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; After his time in the military he worked for the Hermann’s then attended Salina Area Technical College getting his degree in Diesel Mechanic.&nbsp; Following his training he opened Mike’s Repair in Otis, and later worked for Tupper’s Custom Harvesters, George’s Repair, and I-70 Trucking where he retired from. &nbsp;

&nbsp; Michael lived in Hays for many years and moved to Amarillo in 2016.&nbsp; While in Hays he was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, a Lifetime member of the Hays V.F.W Post #9076, and Edwin A. Schumacher Marine Corps League.&nbsp; He enjoyed fishing, cooking, playing cards and golfing.

Michael Scheuerman, age 75

George Andrew Baum, 89, passed away November 3, 2024, at Medicalodges of Great Bend, Great Bend, Kan. He was born September 30, 1935, in Russell County, Kan., north of Bunker Hill, to Andrew and Katherine (Schmidt) Baum.

George returned to the Midwest in 2016 and had been a Great Bend resident, after living many years in Hemet, Cal. He attended school in Ottawa and later graduated from California State University-Fullerton. He served his country proudly from Aug. 12, 1955, to July 19, 1958, in the U.S. Army, earning the rank of SP 4. Two of those years being served in Maison La Forge, France. As a career aerospace engineer for Northrop with countless credentials, along with his military experience, George's greatest accomplishments were of international endeavors, such as assisting with designing components for the Stealth aircraft and training Saudi Arabian soldiers. Being civically minded, George was a Past Commander of The American Legion Post 354 and the V.F.W. and their associated youth programs. George enjoyed reading, baseball, football, genealogy, history, and challenging his mind with word and number puzzles and researching and authoring on many topics, spanning from politics to religion.

Survivors include one brother Jake Baum of Kingsville, Mo.; and two sisters, Hilda Jacobs of Gorham, Kan. and Lydia Kaufman and husband Gary of Great Bend.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Leo Baum, Edward Baum, Kenny Baum and Emil Baum; and by six sisters, Helen Wolford, Mary Mermis, Josephine Shreve, Rosie Thompson, Margaret Bissett and Viola Brown.

Visitation will be 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, November 10, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home. A private family graveside service will be held at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Russell, Kan., with Joe Cotton presiding. George Baum, age 89

Esther Marie Pfannenstiel, 96, passed away on November 2, 2024, surrounded by family at University of Kansas Health Systems – Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on May 5, 1928, in La Crosse, Kansas, to Joseph and Anna (Weber) Randa. On October 19, 1949, she married Elmer “Red” Pfannenstiel in Liebenthal, Kansas. He passed on June 21, 1984.

A resident of Great Bend since 1952, and prior to becoming a resident of Azria Health Woodhaven in 2015, Esther was a homemaker. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima and the Altar Society. Esther was an avid reader and enjoyed watching her soap operas.

Survivors include four children, William J. Pfannenstiel of Yuma, Arizona, Diana Waterhouse of Great Bend, Terry Pfannenstiel and wife Laureen of Rome, Italy, and Lila Vondracek and husband Charles of Timken; ten grandchildren, Malinda Holcombe and husband Jeffrey, Dennis Pfannenstiel, Samantha Waterhouse, Shelby Waterhouse and wife Jessica, Shareah Hubbard and husband Mike, Kristen Murry and husband Jeffrey, Kyle Pfannenstiel and wife Bree, Haley Vondracek, Jared Vondracek, and Laken Vondracek; eleven great grandchildren, Arturo “A.J.”, Aniston, Mason, Kayla, Kennedy, Quinten, Jaxson, Wylder, Logan, Leo and Nora; and numerous other loved ones.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; stillborn daughter, Lila Pfannenstiel; her parents; two brothers; a sister; and daughter-in-law, Barbara Pfannenstiel.

Esther Pfannenstiel, age 96

Danny Lee “Dan” Zimmerschied, 75, passed away surrounded by his three daughters and first grandson on Nov. 1, 2024, at Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend. He was born on Dec. 12, 1948, in Emporia, to Carl and Isabelle (Cappel) Zimmerschied.

Dan was a 1966 graduate of Great Bend High School. He was then drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was presented the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 2d OLC, Expert M-16-Rifle, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, one Service Stripe, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 DVC, and six Overseas Service Sars for his service. After returning state side, he spent many years in Great Bend before living in New Mexico and Colorado. Dan returned to Kansas over 20 years ago, serving as the canteen manger at VFW Post #3111 and most recently as the manager of the Sunflower Diversified Services Recycling Center.

A very social person, Dan was extremely active member of the VFW Post #3111, loving time spent with his fellow military brothers and veterans. He was an avid sports fan, enjoying horse races, supporting the Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, Denver Nuggets, and KU teams, but most importantly, supporting his grandchildren at their many sporting events. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing and bowling, and recently enjoyed the social interaction of Facebook and online poker.

He was born on Dec. 12, 1948, in Emporia, to Carl and Isabelle (Cappel) Zimmerschied.Dan was a 1966 graduate of Great Bend High School. He was then drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was presented the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 2d OLC, Expert M-16-Rifle, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, one Service Stripe, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 DVC, and six Overseas Service Sars for his service. After returning state side, he spent many years in Great Bend before living in New Mexico and Colorado. Dan returned to Kansas over 20 years ago, serving as the canteen manger at VFW Post #3111 and most recently as the manager of the Sunflower Diversified Services Recycling Center.A very social person, Dan was extremely active member of the VFW Post #3111, loving time spent with his fellow military brothers and veterans. He was an avid sports fan, enjoying horse races, supporting the Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, Denver Nuggets, and KU teams, but most importantly, supporting his grandchildren at their many sporting events. Danny 'Dan' Zimmerschied, age 75

Elbert W. “Elbie” Hapes passed away October 28, 2024, at Medicalodges, Great Bend, KS. Elbie was born May 8, 1934, in Tina, Mo., to Charles and Ila (Browning) Hapes. Elbie married Jeanette “Jeanie” Wondra April 25, 1981, in Great Bend. She survives.

Elbie graduated from Wheeling High School, Wheeling, Mo., in 1952, and later served in the United Stated Navy aboard the USS Buck from December 1952 to January 1957, earning the rank of SK3. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose and the American Legion Argonne Post 180, both of Great Bend.

Survivors include Jeanie, of the home; son, Jim Hapes and wife Kelly of Great Bend; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Buena Hake of Smithville, Mo. and a sister-in-law, Beverly Hapes of Chillicothe, Mo. Elbert 'Elbie' Hapes, age 90

James R. “Jim” Meitner, 74, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2024, at his home in Hoisington, Kansas, surrounded by his devoted family. Born on June 1, 1950, to Robert C. and Loyola A. (Reichuber) Meitner, Jim grew up on the family farm near Olmitz, and he embodied the very best of a close-knit, Kansas upbringing. He made it his life’s mission to share his joy, kindness, and talents with everyone he met.

A graduate of Hoisington High School's class of 1969, Jim continued his education at Fort Hays State College, but it was in Hoisington that he planted roots and built a life filled with faith, family, and friendship. On November 6, 1970, he married his high school sweetheart, Celeste Prosser, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington, and they built nearly 54 beautiful years together.

Jim’s hands were as strong as they were skilled; he was a master carpenter and handyman and could fix or build just about anything. He owned Meitner Cabinet and Home Repair for 43 years, remodeling kitchens, bathrooms, and other spaces for countless clients, often donning his trademark red polo shirt. He was just as beloved for the treasures he made for his family — including a very special treehouse that he built for his ten grandchildren, who called him Opa. Whether crafting the perfect apple pie or barbecuing ribs, Jim poured his heart into every project and act of service.

A lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Jim’s unwavering faith and deep love for his parish were evident by his involvement on numerous parish boards, the Diocesan Building Committee, and as a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus. Jim’s contributions to his community were just as numerous — whether he was attending ribbon-cuttings as a proud Chamber Ambassador, working security at the Labor Day street dances, or serving as a board member with the Hoisington Jaycees and the Clara Barton Hospital Foundation. In 2022, Jim was honored as the Hoisington Labor Day Grand Marshal, a recognition that made him very proud.

Jim also loved the outdoors, from snow skiing with grandkids, water skiing with family and friends at Lake Wilson, to scuba diving. He was also an avid hunter, sharing many unforgettable elk hunting and fishing trips with close friends. From gardening, boating, and camping to listening to polka music each day during his lunch break, Jim embraced each day with joy and a contagious enthusiasm. He will be missed by many friends, who enjoyed his company at the weekly bowling league, drinking a beer at the Taproom, cheering for the Chiefs, or visiting nearby casinos. But it is his family who will feel his absence most deeply. To them, he was so much more than a husband, father, and Opa — he was their rock, their heart, and their greatest champion. He led with quiet strength, guiding his children with wisdom and setting an example of humility, generosity, and faith. He was the steady hand in moments of stress, and always ready and able to offer help.

Jim was also the reigning family pitch champion during holiday gatherings. He had an easy smile, a knack for jokes, and smooth moves on the dance floor. His legacy will be cherished in the hearts of those who knew him best.

Jim is survived by his wife, Celeste, of Hoisington; his three children, Heather R. Barleen and husband Doug of Wichita, Chad Meitner and wife Sarah of Hays, and James P. “JP” Meitner and wife Leslie Jo of Topeka; and his ten grandchildren: Sean (Mariah Jack) Barleen of Wichita, Rachel Barleen of Hays, Amanda Barleen of Wichita; Julia, Henry, Charles, Leo, and Abe Meitner, all of Hays; Preston and Madeline Meitner, both of Topeka. Other survivors include: sister Shirley Schugart (John) of Mokelumne Hill, California, his brother Rocky Meitner (Connie) of Olmitz, and numerous, beloved brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who loved and respected him deeply.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Robert Meitner and Loyola A. Meitner Steiner.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary will begin at 7 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Donald Joe “Don” Scott, 70, passed away Oct. 26, 2024, at University of Kansas Health Systems – ER, Great Bend. He was born on Nov. 21, 1953, in Scott City, to Everett and Irma(Waggoner) Scott. On April 23, 1999, he married Peggy Daubert in Great Bend.

A resident of Great Bend for over 25 years, Don was a 1972 graduate from Utica High School. He worked in maintenance at Great Bend Packing Co, previously working the oilfield and on the railroad. Don enjoyed fishing and tinkering on cars and was the life of the party - taking part in karaoke, dancing, and playing cards.

Survivors include son, Jeremie Scott of Great Bend; stepchildren, Mark Rehme and Tena Quintero and husband Eric, all of Marlo, Okla.; three grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, Tommy Scott of Hoisington; sisters, Emma Linsner of Great Bend, Shirley Taylor of Oklahoma, and Ruby Brox of Amarillo, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded by his parents; sons, Jeffrey Scott and Jimmy Dimitt; grandson, Cooper Quintero; and brothers, Everett Jr., Leon, and Randy Scott.

Mary Elizabeth Jones, 87, passed away October 27, 2024, at University of Kansas Health Systems – Great Bend Campus, Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on October 2, 1937, in Edgerton, Missouri, to Donald and Addie (DeMoss) Cook. On October 8, 1955, she married William “Bill” Jones in Edgerton, Missouri. He passed on April 9, 2006.

A resident of Great Bend since 1957, Mary was the bookkeeper and office manager for the family businesses, Bill Jones Welding and M&amp;B Trucking and Supply. She was an active member of the Central Baptist Church, and member of the ABW and White Cross. Mary enjoyed reading, gardening - especially her flowers, a pet lover, and loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include son, Donald Jones and wife Brenda of Great Bend; two daughters, Karen Hickel and husband Dennis, and Kathy Tittel and husband Dwight, all of Great Bend; three grandchildren, Julie, Sarah, and William Jones; many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; sister, Juanita Thomas of Edgerton, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Jones, age 87

Judy Ann Stemm, 76, passed away peacefully at her home in Jetmore, Kansas, October 25, 2024. She was born July 4, 1948, in Zanesville, Ohio to Ernest and Virginia (Elson) Lyons.

Judy was a carnival worker for Nolan’s Carnival, traveling all over to entertain people. She would visit any zoos she could find. She loved to play bingo and when she was younger, enjoyed bowling. She played Diner Dash in her down time. But, above all, she enjoyed having family gatherings.

Betty Jean Shaver, 87, died October 26, 2024, at Bradfield Terrace Assisted Living, Mesquite, Texas. She was born December 5, 1936, in Hoisington, Kansas, the daughter of Martin and Anna (Lauber) Younger. Betty graduated from Hoisington High School in 1955.

On November 8, 1958, she married Leslie Karst in Milburger, Kansas, to this union two daughters were born, Nancy and Rhonda. They later divorced. She then married Franklin Shaver on October 20, 1978, in Hoisington, Kansas. He preceded her in death on November 29, 2014.

A longtime Barton County resident, Betty grew up in Hoisington and later lived in Galatia, Milburger, and finally Great Bend. She worked as a registration clerk for Central Kansas Medical Center for 25 years and was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, Hoisington. In 1997 they moved to Royce City, Texas. While in Texas she was a member of the Joy Lutheran Church in Rockwall. She was also the resident ambassador at Bradfield Terrace. Her favorite past times where her love of reading, embroidery, and spending time with family. She also loved coming back to Hoisington to visit.

Survivors include; daughters, Nancy Karst and companion Lonnie Philbern of Great Bend, and Rhonda (Karst) White and husband J.D. of Royse City, Texas; sisters-in-law, Joyce Karst of Hoisington, Barbara Younger of Emporia, Judy Shaver of Larned, and Ruth Shaver of Sachse, Texas; and her honorary grandsons, Maximus Norris and Harley Norris of Blue Ridge, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Franklin Shaver, and brothers, Al, Paul, Leonard, and Jerome Younger, and sisters, Martina Luebbers and Mary Ann Funk.

Doris M. Johansen, 103, was released from her earthly bonds in the early morning hours on October 22, 2024, at Aster Estates Home Plus in Great Bend, Kansas. Surrounded by loved ones, she passed peacefully with a smile on her face. She was born April 20, 1921, at the family home in Edison, Nebraska, to Benjamin and Inez (Slaughter) Wilsey.

Doris was united in marriage March 6, 1940, to Clarence Johansen. Together they owned and operated Cherry Village Nursing Home starting in 1978, until retiring in 2018. They were married over 60 years until his passing in 2000. Doris was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was a talented seamstress and loved meeting with friends to play bridge.

Survivors include two daughters, Pam Lewis of Great Bend, Carol Fingeret of Hastings, Nebr.; six grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 12 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Johansen and daughter Velma Johansen.

Graveside service are pending at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens in North Platte, Nebr.

Robert Leroy Sanders, 82, passed away at his home October 23, 2024, in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born January 26, 1942, in Great Bend to Robert &amp; Anna Mae (Mangus) Sanders.

After graduating from Great Bend High School in 1959, Robert went straight to work for his grandfather in the oilfield. His first job was for Rosencrantz-Bemis Enterprises. He worked for his father for different oilfield companies including being a tool pusher for Warren Drilling, welder at O’Neil Tank and Roto Mix in Hoisington. He went on to become a Bear Certified front end mechanic. Robert married Diana Elizabeth Schwager July 7, 1962, at Great Bend, Kansas. They shared 55 years together until her passing July 8, 2017.

Survivors include three sons, Robert E. Matthew Charles Atkinson, age 36, of Columbus, Kansas passed away suddenly on Saturday, October 19, 2024.

Matthew was born to Charles and Inga (Meyer) Atkinson on October 10, 1988. He married MaryAnn&nbsp;Ross on November 11, 2017, in Chanute, Kansas. He was an active member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church.&nbsp; A lifelong farmer, Matthew proudly worked alongside his father and grandfather on the family farm, which has thrived for seven generations. He served as a board member of the Kansas Soybean Association. Matthew and MaryAnn received recognition in 2016 as the Corteva Agri Science Young Leaders. He was a past board member for Farm Bureau, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council, reflecting his commitment to agriculture and his community.

From his early days in 4-H to supporting his children in similar activities, Matthew nurtured a love for farming and community involvement in his family. He was deeply patriotic and enjoyed studying U.S. history and was a gun enthusiast. A proud outdoorsman who loved hunting, he cherished his Quapaw heritage and traditions, incorporating them into his respect for the land and conservation practices. Known for his warm sense of humor, he could always lighten the moment with his smile and a classic dad joke. Above all, Matthew cherished spending time especially with his children, his family and friends, sharing stories, playing games, and building memories that will be treasured forever.

Matthew has been preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Elmer Handley, Nick and Julita Meyer and his Uncle Lloyd Atkinson.

Surviving Matthew are his wife MaryAnn (Ross) Atkinson; sons Lydan and Lincoln, and daughter Gwynevere Atkinson all of the home; parents Charles and Inga Atkinson; sisters Chelsey Rziha (husband Samuel) and Lynette Hofer (husband Timothy) nieces and nephews Kyle and Nicole Rziha, and Jordan, Brantley and Joey Hofer all of Wichita, KS. Paternal grandparents Marion Atkinson of Columbus; Judy Wilkerson (Eric) of Joplin, MO. His in-laws Charlie and Kathy Ross of Chanute. Benny Earl “Ben” Chesebro, 77, passed away October 20, 2024, at Bristol Hospice, Red Oak, Texas. He was born on December 24, 1946, in Pensacola, Florida, to Homer E. and Elnora L. (Schultz) Chesebro, and was raised in Larned, Kansas.

He was a 1964 graduate of Larned High School, after which he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Master’s degree in Counseling from Fort Hays State University. He served the country spending four years in the Navy as a sonarman aboard the destroyer, USS Sproston.

Ben was an ordained minister. He taught seminars and bible study groups, focusing on the power of forgiveness to change lives. Ben was the author of Comprehensive Personal Repentance (CPR). His passion in life was to see people set free from worldly bondage by the uncompromised Word of God.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Carla; his son, Brian Brown and wife Yanira of Richardson, Texas; stepsons, Thomas Metzler of Aguanga, California, and Curtis Metzler of Dallas, Texas; granddaughters, Sofia and Annalise Brown of Richardson, Texas; and brother, Barry Chesebro and wife Debbie of Topeka.

He is preceded in death by his father, Homer Chesebro; mother and stepfather, Elnora and Gerald Jinks; and stillborn twin brother, Denny.

Harold V. Herdman, 82, McCracken, Kansas, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2024, at his home.

Harold was born June 20, 1942, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Charles Oliver and Willetta Maxine (Gordon) Herdman. He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. A 1960 graduate of McCracken High School, McCracken, Kansas, he was a mechanic and farmer.

He was a member of the McCracken Methodist Church, McCracken, Kansas.

Harold enjoyed fishing, camping, being at the lake, and his trips to Colorado.

On September 7, 1963, he married Janet S. Lyda at Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas. She preceded him in death December 15, 2019.

Survivors include: two sons, Chad Herdman (Stephanie), Windom, Kansas, and Trenton Herdman (Jana), Rush Center, Kansas; one daughter, Tambra Pfeifer (Todd), Great Bend, Kansas; 11 grandchildren, Justin Herdman, Jeremy Herdman, Joseph Herdman (fiancée, Ryland Aroura), Clayton Herdman (Kacee), Garrison Herdman, Kendrick Herdman, Athena Grotheer (Kaleb), Sierra Pfeifer, Marissa Pfeifer (fiancé, Landon Winkler), Erin Pfeifer, and Johanna Pfeifer (fiancé, T. Harold Herdman, age 82

Michael Anthony “Mike” Zager, 75, passed away October 16, 2024, after a courageous battle, at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. He was born July 18, 1949, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Lyle and Connie Andres.

Mike moved from Hoisington to Great Bend in 1985, and married Caron (Casey) Carver on November 27, 1987, in Great Bend. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad (Missouri Pacific), dispatching from Hoisington and then Salina, retiring as a conductor in 2011 after 38 years of faithful service.

Mike was a member of First Christian Church, Great Bend, and the United Transportation Union. He loved the outdoors and time spent camping, fishing, bowling, golf, and going to the casinos. Mike enjoyed traveling, especially the winter trips to Florida and all the visits with the “boys in the hood” in Texas. He was a talented man that knew no bounds and would take on woodworking, construction and do-it-yourself projects, being particularly proud of his pond that he had built. His competitive nature found him competing in barbeque contests. Mike was an avid fan of the Chiefs and KU Jayhawks. But most of all, spending time with the family was most important to him, especially the annual July 4th celebration.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Caron Zager; four sons, Zac Zager (Cortney), Tony Zager (Trisha) both of Spicewood, Texas, Corey Carver (Tricia) of Topeka, and Jarrod Carver of Olathe, Kan.; daughter, Kaylin Zager (Daniel) of Frederick, Colo.; sister, Jayne Sosa (Gabe) of Kansas City; eight grandchildren, Callan Carver, Rykan Carver, Presley Zager, Brecklyne Zager, Alyssa Carver, Jaxon Carver, Cooper Yarnall, Quinn Yarnall, and beloved coonhound, Andy. Michael 'Mike' Zager, age 75

John Lewis
Schreiber, 93, passed away at his home, October 15, 2024, in Great Bend,
Kansas. He was born July 19, 1931, to Raymond and Bessie (Evans) Schreiber in
Lyons.

John was a
Great Bend High School class of 1950 graduate. He enlisted in the United States
Navy in 1951, proudly serving in the Korean Conflict, Naval Air station in
Corpus Christi, Texas and Hutchinson, Kan., USS George Clymer, APA 27, and the
USS Horace A. Bass, APD 124. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and was a
proud veteran. Upon returning home, he married Reta Fischer on November 14,
1954, in Great Bend. He began working as a field salesman for Midland Pipe and
Supply, store manager for Sooner Pipe and Supply, purchasing manager for
Marlette Mobile Homes, and retired from McDonald Tank and Equipment as Vice
President in 1998. 

John was a
faithful member of First United Methodist Church, UR Welcome Sunday School
Class, American Legion Argonne Post #180, Golden Belt Community Concert
Association, and a former member of the Golden Belt Woodcarvers. 

Survivors
include his beloved wife, Reta, of 69 years; two daughters; Denise Kay Moore of
Spring, Texas, Jana Lee Cavanaugh and her husband Dan of Peosta, Iowa, sister;
Donna Davis of Weatherford, Okla., grandson; Jeremy Moore of Lincoln, Nebr.;
granddaughters, Emily Zaleski and her husband Daniel of Woodlands, Texas and
Leah Cavanaugh of Dubuque, Iowa; five great grandchildren, Kendra Moore, Caleb
Moore, Reis Zaleski, Fischer Zaleski and Tanner Zaleski; and four great great
grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was
preceded in death by brothers; Gary Schreiber and Dennis Schreiber; son in law;

John Schreiber, age 93

Rose Ann Wondra, 89, died October 14, 2024, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born October 7, 1935, in Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of William F. and Anna M. (Hickey) Bahr.

On August 29, 1956, she married Leo A. Wondra in Olmitz, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 23, 2002.

A longtime Claflin resident, she was a teller at First Kansas Bank of Claflin. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and active in the Altar Society. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Rose Ann was always ready to help anyone, especially with any type of crafting or decorating. Most of all she loved time spent with her grandkids and great grandkids.

Survivors include; four children, Lois (Trey) Hanchett of Salina, Cheryl (Tony) Klepper of Ellinwood, Gary Wondra of Olmitz; and Bernetta (Tom) Burkhart of Hutchinson; eight grandchildren, Lukas Demel, Marisa Fairchild, Michelle Bland, Andrea Walters, Kristin Colson, Kenton Wondra, Haleigh Nelson, Chase Burkhart, Ben Burkhart, Kyler Burkhart, Layne Burkhart and Wyatt Burkhart; and six great grandchildren, Jack &amp; Sam Demel, Annalynn &amp; Emma Fairchild, Kendall Bland and Finley Burkhart. She is also survived by a brother Robert Bahr of Houston, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers, Charles, Fred, Marion, Don, Cecil, and Francis Bahr, a sister, Catherine Oborny, and a daughter-in-law, Lisa Wondra.

Visitation will be 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., with Vigil and Rosary to begin at 7 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 17, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Claflin, celebrated by Father Prakash Kola. Burial will follow in Claflin Cemetery.

Rose Ann Wondra, age 89

Richard Joseph
“Rich” Moeder, 96, passed away peacefully October 15, 2024, at The University
of Kansas Hospital in Great Bend Campus. He was born July 24, 1928, in Odin, to
Edward and Ida (Penka) Moeder. 

After
growing up in Odin, Rich served in the United States Army as a member of the
quartermaster section HQ8th Army in Korea from May 20, 1951, to October 6,
1952, and was cited for his meritorious service, rising to the rank of
Sergeant.

Upon
returning home, Rich married Geraldine “Jean” Reif on November 10, 1953, in
Odin. The couple moved to Great Bend, spending 68 years together and raising
four daughters. Rich remained in Great Bend, living in the home that he and
Jean built, until recently moving into RiverBend Assisted Living.

Rich
started Rich’s Electric in 1957 and was proud of saying that he wired around
800 new homes in the Great Bend and surrounding areas. After 57 years in the
business, Rich retired at the age of 86.

In his free
time, Rich enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing baseball, and bowling. But his
favorite hobby was vegetable gardening, growing more tomatoes, cucumbers,
peppers, potatoes, onions, garlic, cantaloupe, pumpkins, and corn (some years
around 2,000 ears) than the family could keep up with, and sharing all with
family, friends, and neighbors.

Rich was a
devoted member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church,
serving as an usher for many years. He was also a regular at all the weekday
and Saturday services. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #862.

Survivors
include four daughters; Deb Floodman and husband Michael of Wichita, Cheri
Hayes and husband Bill of New Fairfield, Conn., Diane Stalcup and husband Kevin
of Great Bend, and Karen Williams and partner Kendal Nelson of Andover; eight
grandchildren; Kyle Gerstner and wife Allie, Abby Rickard and husband David,
Macee Kelley and husband Daniel, Kelli Myers and husband Shane, Matt Stalcup
and wife Andrea, Barry Stalcup and wife Daphne, Lauren Williams, and Kacey
Williams and partner Ryan Fletter; 15 great grandchildren; two brothers, Edwin
and Lawrence; one sister, MaryAnn. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife,
Jean; his parents, Edward and Ida; three brothers, Lenard, Raymond, and Leo;
two sisters; Monica and Viola, and son in law; Kirk Williams.

Visitation
will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 20, 2024, with a Vigil
and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of

Richard 'Rich' Moeder, age 96

Catherine Cecelia (Krier) Seyfert was born June 20, 1927 in Barton County, Kansas to Bill and Clara (Hoffman) Krier. She died Saturday, October 12, 2024 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 97.

She married Eugene Seyfert on October 28, 1947 in Claflin. Five children were born to this union. She loved to cook, and was a cook at the Hunter Grade School, and worked at the Hunter Café. She also enjoyed working at the Economy Shop in Beloit. She enjoyed her family and loved to visit with anyone that wanted to visit, even those she had never met before.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; daughter, Shirley; son, Terry; and granddaughter, Sondra Bell.

She is survived by her daughters, Janice (Nick) Kastner of Wichita, Sharon (Larry) Dohe of Lincoln, and Cherie (Jason) Nelssen of Lebanon; daughter-in-law, Julie Seyfert of Beloit; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; &amp; 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 16 at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Tipton followed by burial in Greenwood Union Cemetery in Hunter. Visitation will be from 1-7 PM Tuesday at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Hunter Community Center.

Catherine (Krier) Seyfert, age 97

Dr. Donald L.
Williams, 76, passed away October 11, 2024, surrounded by family at his home in
Great Bend, Kansas. He was born in Pomona, California, on April 8, 1948, to Leo
and Eva (Avery) Williams. Don grew up on a dairy farm with a close family,
including siblings, Nancy, Gary, and twin brother David who was younger by five
minutes. During Don’s second grade year, the family moved from southern
California to Montrose, Colorado.

Don was a devout
Christian and held many leadership roles in the church.&nbsp; He was an active member of the First Baptist
Church in Lyons and Grace Community Church in Great Bend.&nbsp; He was a member of the board of education for
both USD 405 and USD 428. He belonged to many bridge clubs, enjoyed pheasant
hunting, gardening, and attending the Kansas State Fair. An artist at heart, he
was a poet with a gift for singing and he sang in quartets and the church
choir. Above all else, he loved his family and enjoyed spending time supporting

A lifetime
learner, after graduating from Montrose High School, Don continued his
education by receiving an undergraduate degree in biology from Kansas Wesleyan
University in Salina. It was during his time there that he married his
highschool sweetheart, Janice Schell, on June 9, 1968. He later completed a
master’s degree in biology from Western State University in Colorado and a
doctorate degree in education from Ball State University in Indiana. Don’s
teaching career began with teaching in Hanston, before moving onto Lyons High
School&nbsp; where he taught biology and
coached wrestling. In 1988, Don became a professor of Biology at Sterling
College and then later at Park University in Parkville, Missouri. Don was also
well-known as a driver’s education instructor, teaching many generations of
family and students to be conscientious drivers. Indeed, Don formed valuable
and life long relationships with many of his students who affectionately
nicknamed him “Boots”.

Survivors include
his wife of 56 years, Janice; children, Pamela Williams of Hoisington, Dr. Ryan
Williams and wife Sara of Great Bend, Sarah Williams and partner Dameon Walker
of Manhattan, New York, and Amy Williams of Great Bend; eight grandchildren,
Liyu Debela and husband Abraham of Duluth, Georgia, Tarikua Williams of Fort
Worth, Texas, Mary Hohlt and husband Dylan of Somerville, Texas, Michael
Williams of Fort Worth, Texas, Sean Williams and fiancé Megan Kappleman of
Salina, Malachi Williams of Manhattan, Kansas, Ruth Williams of Phoenix,
Arizona, and Matthew Williams of Great Bend; five great grandchildren with
another on the way; brothers, Gary Williams of Montrose, Colorado, and David
Williams and wife Valeita of Lawrence; and numerous nieces, nephews, and loved
ones.

He is preceded in
death by his parents; and his sister Nancy Weese.

Cremation has
taken place. Visitation will be from noon to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 16,
2024, with family receiving guests from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant
Funeral Home. Memorial service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October
17, 2024, at Grace Community Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been
designated to Sterling College or Star of Hope, in care of Bryant Funeral Home,
1425 Patton Rd., Great Bend, KS 67530.

Williams, 76, passed away October 11, 2024, surrounded by family at his home in
Great Bend, Kansas. He was born in Pomona, California, on April 8, 1948, to Leo
and Eva (Avery) Williams. Don grew up on a dairy farm with a close family,
including siblings, Nancy, Gary, and twin brother David who was younger by five
minutes. During Don’s second grade year, the family moved from southern
California to Montrose, Colorado.Don was a devout
Christian and held many leadership roles in the church.&nbsp; He was an active member of the First Baptist
Church in Lyons and Grace Community Church in Great Bend.&nbsp; He was a member of the board of education for
both USD 405 and USD 428. He belonged to many bridge clubs, enjoyed pheasant
hunting, gardening, and attending the Kansas State Fair. An artist at heart, he
was a poet with a gift for singing and he sang in quartets and the church
choir. Above all else, he loved his family and enjoyed spending time supporting

Dr. Donald Williams, age 76

Gerald Donovan, 85, died October 11, 2024, at Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born at home on June 21, 1939, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Jerome and Lenora (Cromwell) Donovan. Gerald graduated from Hoisington High School in 1958.

He married his high school sweetheart, Donna Steinert, on March 30, 1958, in Hoisington, Kansas.

A lifetime resident of Hoisington, Gerald worked as a milk hauler for the Pioneer Cheese Company in Hoisington and later was a self-employed contract pumper. His kids fondly remember rides in the milk truck and nights at the baseball fields where he coached little league and ran the concessions stands with Donna for many years. He loved music, westerns, and his green yard with his tired iron. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Donna Donovan of the home; daughter, Denise Dinkel and husband Brad of Russell; sons, Darrel Donovan and wife Donita of Hoisington, and Quincy Donovan of Jetmore; eight grandchildren, Danae (Tyler) Burns of Topeka, Trista Goreham of Marquette, Royce (Tessa) Goreham of Hoisington, Dylan (Andrea) Donovan of Abilene, Devan (Andrew) Hall of Overland Park, Craig (Suzenne) Donovan of Manila, Philippines, Nick (Shae) Donovan of Chesapeake, Virginia, Brett (Allie) Donovan of Dodge City; and 14 great grandchildren, Kaedrik Silsby, Bensyn and Bryson Goreham, Brody and Bently Corbett, Aria, Greyson, Wrynleigh, and Lincoln Donovan, Oliver Hall, Rae and Joules Donovan, Zane and Aeden Donovan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Marvin Donovan, and sisters, Melva Merlau and Delora Donovan.

There will be no viewing as per Gerald’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m., Sunday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 21, 2024, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Don Fisher presiding. Inurnment will follow in Hoisington Cemetery.
