Gladys Mae Feist, 86, passed away, April 29, 2025, at The University of Kansas Health System in Great Bend, Kansas. She was born May 22, 1938, in WaKeeney, Kansas to Adam and Miriam (Deines) Deines. She married William “Bill” Feist September 21, 1956, in Hastings, Nebraska. He passed away February 22, 2011.

Gladys and Bill moved to the Great Bend from WaKeeney in 1963. She worked for Jefferson Elementary as a lunchroom monitor. Gladys loved to play bingo and cards; especially if she won! She enjoyed bowling league and traveling far and wide for bowling tournaments. Her family will tell you that she was an amazing cook! Above all, she loved the time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. They will miss her dearly!

Survivors include son, Rick Feist and his wife Bev of Ponca City, Okla.; daughters, Kim Dobratz and her husband Steve of Great Bend, Roxanne Mayers of Great Bend, Shelly Strube and her husband Kent of Garden City; grandchildren, Brittany Ringle (Mark), Ali Feist, Shaun Dobratz (Stacy), Matt Dobratz (Kaitlyn), Jason Mayers (Jayme), Janelle Riner (Derek), Jennifer Mayers (Eric), Tanner Strube (Caitlin); great grandchildren, Palmer Ringle, Reese Dobratz, Xander Dobratz, Lawson Dobratz, Laramie Dobratz, Samantha Mayers, Alexandra Mayers, Stevie Mayers, Charley Riner, Cruze Riner; sister, Rosetta Jamison; sister in law, Margie Deines; and loving caregiver, Magda Dolatshahi; and many, many nieces and nephews. Dolores P. Petz, age 95, of McCracken, Kansas passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at Via Christi Village, Hays. She was born on March 12, 1930, in Ellinwood, Kansas to Anton and Barbara (Auburger) Kowalsky. Dolores graduated from the Catholic High School in Ellinwood. On October 16, 1947, she married Donald J. Petz. He preceded her in death on June 15, 1984.

Dolores was a homemaker and a farmer along with Donald She continued farming after Donald’s death in 1984 retiring in 1996 when their son, Danny took over the farming operations. Dolores was artistic in nature particularly landscape oil paintings. Her painting was a way for her to pass the time while she was caring for Donald. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Altar society both in McCracken. She also attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Family was especially important to Dolores and keeping her family together was always a priority for her.

She is survived by her sons, Chris Petz and wife Jackie Kennedy of McCracken and Darrell Petz and wife Cynthia of Andover, Kansas; nine grandchildren, Terri Everhart and husband James, Kelly Petz and wife Melanie, Angie Timson and husband Trent, Troy Petz, Melissa Leiker and husband Chad, Chansler Petz and wife Kaylyn, Chelsea Wells and husband Kurt, Dustin Petz and wife Shelly and Shanda Preston and husband Shane; 27 grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Madeline, Patricia, and Joy as well as a son-in law, Harold.

Dolores was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sons, Gene, Danny, Tim, and Kirby; daughter, Sherry Witthuhn and a grandson, Eric Petz.

Larry Gene Stejskal, 89, Timken, Kansas, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Aster Estates, Great Bend, Kansas.

Larry was born August 11, 1935, in Timken, Kansas, the son of Louis and Tona (Oborny) Stejskal. He was a lifelong resident of Rush County. He was a farmer before his retirement.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken, Kansas, where he served on the parish council and was a former president of the same. He was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2100, Olmitz, Kansas. He was a member of KD Workman, and a former member of the Mid-State Farmer’s Co-Op Board, the Timken Credit Union Board and Rush County Fire District #2, all of Timken, Kansas. Larry was recognized as the Farmer of the Year by Young Kansas Farmer.

Larry loved to bowl and was a member of a bowling team for many years. He and his wife, Betty, enjoyed being members of a card playing club, playing both pitch and pinochle. Their fondness of playing cards was something they shared with their children and grandchildren, who still enjoy a friendly game of cards when the family gathers. Many a New Year’s Day was spent “winching” with family and friends.

On August 18, 1955, he married Betty L. Weichen at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Survivors include: his wife, Betty Stejskal, Timken, Kansas; two sons, Rick Stejskal (Nette), Wilmington, Delaware, and Brian Stejskal (Kim), Bison, Kansas; three daughters, Roxane Orr (Kevin), Chanute, Kansas, Ginger Dodin (Bill), Junction City, Kansas, and Karen Mitchell (Mike), Ellinwood,

Kansas; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Wasson (Chad), Joe Vondracek (Shane), Cynthia Wimberly (Kevin), Chris Stejskal, Amanda Stejskal, James Dodin (Gelia), Nicole Stejskal, and Zach Stejskal (Taylor); and 13 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edward Stejskal, Leonard Stejskal, and Rudy Stejskal; an infant sister, Blanch Stejskal; and five sisters, Anna Hamrdla, Betty Richardson, Elsie McGrath, Eleanor Snellen, and Irene Lou Laqua.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 29, 2025, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M.

Beloved Teacher, Farmer, Auctioneer, and Community Leader

Homer Kruckenberg, 90, a cherished and longtime resident of Great Bend, passed away peacefully on April 12th, 2025 surrounded by family. Known for his vibrant storytelling, booming auctioneer voice, and unmatched wit, Homer left an indelible mark on every life he touched-often with a nickname, a laugh, or a well-timed two-dollar bill.

Born in 1935, Homer devoted 44 years to teaching at Great Bend High School, where he shaped generations of students not only through lessons in history, but also in humor, resilience, and critical thinking. His classroom was as much about character as curriculum-where learning to think for yourself was just as important as knowing your dates and facts. And of course, every student walked away with a nickname, Whether they wanted one or not.

Outside the classroom, Homer wore many hats. He was a dedicated farmer, a respected county commissioner, and a legendary auctioneer whose voice could carry across fields and fairgrounds alike. At weddings, he delighted crowds by auctioning off the bride's shoe-a cherished tradition that raised funds and laughter.

To receive a two-dollar bill from Homer was to be welcomed into a unique circle of affection and mischief—a token of his generosity, humor, and one-of-a-kind charm.

Homer is survived by his daughters, Gretchen Titus-Schmidt of Prairie Village, Kansas, and Kaydene Truitt (Mitch) of Turon, Kansas, his brother Larry Kruckenberg (Rosie), Sisters Ruth Becker and Kay Hutton (Mark), 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce LaVon (Graham) Kruckenberg, his sons, Kyle and John Kruckenberg, his parents Herman and Marget Kruckenberg, his brother Sam Kruckenberg and his sisters Janet Lamb and Kathy McCann.

Cremation has been chosen. A celebration of Homer's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on May 24th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, Kansas. In keeping with his spirit, the family invites attendees to bring a favorite story to share-bonus points if it ends in laughter. Larry Joe Arnold, 84, passed away April 20, 2025, surrounded by family at Azria Health Woodhaven, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on December 5, 1940, in Larned, Kansas to John Jr. and Edna (Firestone) Arnold. On September 9, 1962, he married Earlene Meckfessel in Larned.

A resident of Great Bend since 1964 coming from the Larned area, Larry was a hard worker his whole life, starting with farm work, including his part time wheat farming, a high school job at Blattner Manufacturing, then as a diesel mechanic for Detroit Diesel. He grew up in Sanford, Kansas, known as one of the “Arnold Boys” and had an onery streak he kept throughout his life. He transferred from there to Larned High School, where he was a graduate.

Larry was a member of the First Christian Church, VFW Post 3111 honorarily, Newmar Camping Group, coffee group at Great Bend Coffee, and was active at the Great Bend Senior Center. He was avid about his yard work, making sure his lawn was cared for along with his flower beds. Larry enjoyed loud cars and vehicles, traveling, both in his motorhome, where he and Earlene would spend winters in Harlingen, Texas, or on bus trips like to Mexico or to the light houses up north. He loved to go square dancing with his favorite partner, Earlene, where they were members with Cheyenne Twisters for many years. Above all, Larry adored spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years; son, Scott Arnold and husband Terry Huffman of Kansas City, Missouri; daughter, Jolene Kirmer and husband Phil of Great Bend; three grandchildren, Kylene Baxa and husband Ken of Salina, Kevin Kirmer and wife Dava of Great Bend, and Kelli Kirmer and fiancé Anthony Miller of Wichita; seven great grandchildren, Kenzie Baxa, Aubrie Baxa, Ben Baxa, Amelia VanSteenburgh, Masen VanSteenburgh, Atlee Kirmer, and Elizabeth Miller; two brothers, Jimmy Arnold of El Paso, Texas, and John Arnold III of Larned; two sisters, Marie Walker of El Paso, Texas, and Ruth Bronson and husband Wendel of Del Rio, Texas; sister-in-law, Sharon Arnold of Larned; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Larry Arnold, age 84

Lois Elizabeth Brichacek, 98, passed away April 21, 2025, at Azria Health in Great Bend, Kansas. She was born August 15, 1926, in Anthony, Kansas to William &amp; Rose (Vermillion) Gilek. Lois married Donald F. Brichacek August 19, 1950, in Salina. He preceded her in death November 11, 1984.

Lois obtained her bachelor’s in education from Kansas Weslyan University. She worked in the school system for Sylvan Grove, Gypsum, and Argonia before moving to the Great Bend area in 1955 to be a home economics teacher for Roosevelt Junior High until her retirement in 1987. Following retirement, she worked as a travel host for Cheyenne Travel for 10 years, and administration for the Great Bend Convention and Visitor Bureau, and Cheyenne Bottoms Wetlands Center.

Lois was a member of Frist Presbyterian Church, Pilot Club, Barton County Historical Society, Bungalow EHU, Retired Teacher’s Association, and Barton County League of Women Voters. She loved to play the piano and organ and kept her hands busy sewing, baking, or gardening. She loved to travel and lived life to the fullest, but she found all the joy in being surrounded by her children, grandkids, and great grandkids that will miss her dearly.

Survivors include son, Jay Brichacek and his wife Marsha of Johnstown, Colo.; daughter, Kay Burns and her husband Tom of Great Bend; grandchildren, Erin VanCamp (Chad), Allison Conine (Zach), Logan Burns (Traci), Wyatt Brichacek, Kelsey Brichacek; great grandchilden, Avery VanCamp, Aaden VanCamp, Ava VanCamp, Harper Conine, Callaway Conine, Sutton Conine, Conway Conine, Nora Burns, and Anniston Burns. Cheryl L. Reinert, 60, passed away April 18, 2025, at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, Kan. She was born January 7, 1965, in Great Bend, Kan. to Larry and Marilyn (Brown) Kopke. Cheryl had previously been married to Darren Reinert.

Cheryl was a lifetime resident of Great Bend and a 1983 graduate of Great Bend High School. Upon the completion of her education, she pursued employment with Cheyenne Travel Agency, CPI, CUNA Mutual, then finally Genpact. Cheryl enjoyed cooking, crafting, world travel and time spent with family and friends.

Cheryl is survived by her son, Logan Reinert (Macy) of Great Bend; parents, Larry L. and Marilyn J. Kopke of Great Bend; sister, Merritt Kopke of Godfrey, Ill.; life partner, Beck Tripp of Great Bend; and Beck’s son, Bryan Tripp (Gail) and family of Lyndon, Kan.

Cheryl Reinert, age 60

James H. Nolte, 97, of Great Bend and Stafford, passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2025. He was born on May 19, 1927, on his family’s farm in Stafford County to John and Elizabeth (Ukens) Nolte. He married Fern A. Langrehr on June 13, 1948, in Hudson, Kansas. She preceded him in death on March 13, 2007.

James served in the Army Reserves until he was honorably discharged, ranking as Master Sargeant. He worked as a Senior Completion Engineer with Dresser Industries in Great Bend until his retirement. He then served as county commissioner in Barton County. James was a Boy Scout Troop Leader, member of the Masonic Lodge #15, York Rite, Knights of the York Rite Cross of Honour, Scottish Rite 33 degree, Elks Lodge, and American Legion Argonne Post 180. He was a member of First Christian Church.

Survivors include three sons, J. Douglas Nolte (Kim) of Salisbury, Md., Dale L. Nolte (Joyce) of Fort Collins, Colo., Keith A. Nolte (Cindy) of Wichita; brother, Roy Nolte of Hoisington; grandchildren, Kelly Miller (Mark), Ashlyn Ennis (Bruce), Alex Nolte (Erica), Reed Nolte; great grandchildren, Cole Miller, Sullie Ennis, Grayson Ennis, and Brooks Ennis.

James Nolte, age 97

Gary Allen Hinson, 87, passed away on April 16, 2025, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. He was born on October 27, 1937, in Concordia, Kansas, to Elbert and Helen (Strait) Hinson. On November 23, 1958, he married Patricia “Pat” Blake in Delphos, Kansas. She passed on July 9, 2023.

A resident of Great Bend, coming from Concordia, Kansas in 1974, Gary worked as a salesman for Bett’s Rainbo Baking Company. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Great Bend and the Moose Lodge in Concordia. Gary enjoyed watching westerns and Kansas City Chiefs football games, traveling, feeding birds, spending time at Veterans’ Memorial Park, and attending family events. He was a proud American, making sure to always fly his American flag. Gary cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include son, Greg (Alina) Hinson of Great Bend; daughter, Tammy Hinson of Great Bend; daughter-in-law, Michelle Hinson of Great Bend; five grandchildren, Samantha Hinson, Natalie McAnulla, Tyler (Jessi) Hinson, Janell (Matt) Simmons, Blake Hinson,; five great grandchildren, Jude Riggs, Abby Hinson, Kendall Simmons, Kate Simmons, and Allie Simmons; three sisters, Louise (Warren) Regnier of Concordia, Janie Hinson of Windsor, Colorado, and Beth Maciejewski of Kansas City, Missouri.

He is preceded in death by his wife; son, Tony Hinson; his parents; brothers, Davey Hinson and Dean Hinson; daughter-in-law, Regina Hinson; brother-in-law, Mark Maciejewski; and sister-in-law, Diane Hinson.

Gary Hinson, age 87

Jeanette Marks, 84, passed away April 16, 2025, at Credo Senior Living in Hoisington, Kansas. On June 8, 1963, she married Carl Marks at Stafford, Kansas. He proceeded her in death on May 22, 2014. Together they had one daughter, Lori Waters (Brent), she survives.

Jeanette graduated from Pittsburg State University with a Bachelor of Science degree. She was the bookkeeper for Sylvia Cooperative Association, administrative assistant to the Reno County Commission and co-owner/partner of C &amp; J Pumping, Inc.

Being a loyal and active member of the Zenith Presbyterian Church, she faithfully played the organ/piano for weekly services for over 50 years. Jeanette enjoyed hosting dinners and entertaining at their home for family and friends along with being an avid reader. She and Carl spent many years vacationing at Grand Teton National Park and Estes Park, Colorado.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 25 at Sylvia Cemetery with a meal following at Zenith Presbyterian Church.

Jeanette Marks, age 84

Robert “Spencer” Manuel of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away peacefully, age 82, on February 17, 2025, in Kansas City, Kansas.

Spencer was born in Monet, Missouri, on January 15, 1943. He moved to Hoisington, Kansas with his family when he was eight years old; graduated from Hoisington High School in 1961, lettering in debate; and met the love of his life, Linda Jean Baker, in 1962. Spencer married Linda in 1963, and he was called to active duty in the Navy later that year, stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. Following his service, Spencer began a career in advertising, followed by twenty-six years with 3M – you may have received of one of the many care packages that he and Linda prepared over the years. Spencer was active in his church. He was an avid golfer, and he spent most weekends with his friends on the golf course.

Spencer was preceded in death by his mother, Doris Bancroft Manuel; his father, John Manuel; his brother, James “Jimmy” Manuel; and grandson, Matthew Manuel. Spencer is survived by his wife of 61 years, Linda Baker Manuel; sister Suzanne (Robert) Enriquez; sons R. Spencer (Chris) Manuel and Travis (Erin) Manuel; his grandchildren, Michaela (Evan) Wright, Olivia Wyrick, Zachary, Cooper (Payden), Sarah, and Scott Manuel; and his six great grandchildren, Jonah, Georgia, Gwen, Josephine, Cambria, and Milo.

Celebration of life will take place at St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church, 12251 Antioch, Overland Park, Kansas, on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 2:00pm. Services will be livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube for those who cannot attend in-person.

Spencer’s ashes will be interred in the Church Memorial Garden following the Service. A reception will follow.

Robert 'Spencer' Manuel, age 82

Donna Lee Kimber, 84, passed away April 11, 2025, at Credo Senior Living, Hoisington. She was born October 8, 1940, in Wichita, the daughter of Jim and Mary (Stoss) Smolik. Donna married Russell Kimber Feb. 10, 1958, in Great Bend.

Donna, a long-time resident of Great Bend, was a current co-owner of Kimber Rentals. Previous to the residential rental business, she operated a painting and wall covering business and designed and fabricated awnings for The Southard Corporation Company. Donna was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose, Altar Society, Campfire Board of Directors, PTA Board, Barton County Historical Association, Golden Belt Community Concert Association, E.H.U., Barton County Election Board, Pilot Club and served as a Boy Scout leader. Never having idle hands and if spare time was to be had, Donna enjoyed reading, traveling and fellowship with family and friends in a game of pinochle or Bunco.

Donna married Russell Kimber Feb. 10, 1958, in Great Bend.Donna, a long-time resident of Great Bend, was a current co-owner of Kimber Rentals. Previous to the residential rental business, she operated a painting and wall covering business and designed and fabricated awnings for The Southard Corporation Company. Donna was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose, Altar Society, Campfire Board of Directors, PTA Board, Barton County Historical Association, Golden Belt Community Concert Association, E.H.U., Barton County Election Board, Pilot Club and served as a Boy Scout leader. Brody Carl Pflughoeft,&nbsp;age 13, died April 10,&nbsp;2025, at Wesley Medical Center,&nbsp;Wichita, Kansas. &nbsp;He was born April 25, 2011, at Salina, Kansas, the son of&nbsp;Timothy&nbsp;and Brenda (Steinert) Pflughoeft. &nbsp;Brody was an 8th&nbsp;grader&nbsp;at Central Plains Junior High&nbsp;School, Claflin, Kansas. &nbsp;He was a proud&nbsp;Oiler, who loved&nbsp;playing&nbsp;all&nbsp;sports with a passion for&nbsp;football, and was&nbsp;willing to wear&nbsp;any costume&nbsp;and be&nbsp;the loudest&nbsp;to cheer&nbsp;from the student section.&nbsp;

Brody&nbsp;was baptized,&nbsp;received&nbsp;his first communion,&nbsp;and was confirmed all at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in&nbsp;Claflin. &nbsp;Brody had an amazing servant&nbsp;heart&nbsp;and&nbsp;would do anything for anyone&nbsp;or stand up and be the protector or&nbsp;loyal friend&nbsp;when needed. He&nbsp;enjoyed making others laugh&nbsp;and will be remembered for his&nbsp;ear-to-ear&nbsp;infectious&nbsp;smile.&nbsp;He loved his family and friends unconditionally.&nbsp;Brody was an&nbsp;adventurous&nbsp;kid who loved&nbsp;fishing and hunting.He loved summers at the pool, and video games&nbsp;with friends&nbsp;(especiallyFortnite),&nbsp;sushi&nbsp;and ice cream. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

John Raymond Boor, 75, passed away peacefully April 7, 2025, at The University of Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born July 3, 1949, in Great Bend, to John &amp; Veronica (Schreiber) Boor, Jr.

John obtained his associate’s degree at Barton County Community College. He enlisted in the Navy in 1967 and proudly served during the Vietnam War and Desert Storm. He was honorably discharged in 2004. John married Judy K. Schmeidler April 8, 1972, in Hoisington. He worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office for 33 years until he retired. John was a man that was a problem solver. He could fix anything. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. But above all, he loved spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 53 years, Judy Boor; son, Jeff Boor and his wife Mindy of Shawnee; daughters, Jodie Hess and her husband Kevin of Hutchinson, Jamie Miller and her husband Doug of Olathe; sisters, Ronnie Lou Drees of Manhattan, Rose Cantrell and her husband John of Lawrence, and Carolyn Hall and her husband John of Lenexa; grandchildren, Austin Hess and his wife Grace, Aaron Hess and his wife Sydney, Jack Miller, Kate Miller, Charley Boor, John Boor, Henry Boor, and Jeffrey Boor, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents.

John Boor, age 75

Carl LeRoy Stoppel, 63, of Russell, Kansas, died on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at The University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

LeRoy was born on August 12, 1961, in Russell, Kansas, the son of Carl Alvin and Pearl Mae (Bushell) Stoppel. He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1980. He worked in the oilfield industry as a Roustabout working for the last several years with Scheck Oil Company in Russell. He enjoyed riding his side-by-side motorcycle, shooting guns and sitting next to a fire pit drinking beer with his close friends. LeRoy was never married but found love the last year of his life with Sarah Waechter who helped care and love LeRoy while he battled his cancer diagnosis. One of his greatest treasurers in life was being part of the R Club. Having one final reunion with his “brothers” brought him so much pride and joy.

Surviving family includes his sister Patricia M. Demel of Kansas City, Missouri and significant other and girlfriend Sarah Waechter of Russell, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ernest A. “Sonny” Stoppel, niece Melissa Demel and brother in-law Ray Demel.

LeRoy selected a cremation service, and a celebration of LeRoy’s life will be held at 10 A.M on Friday, April 11, 2025, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. Family will greet guest the day of the service from 9 A.M. to service time. Burial will follow at the Wilson City Cemetery in Wilson, Kansas. Arleth Ibarra Hernandez

Jacquelyn “Jackie” Beth Monroe, 87, passed away February 13, 2025, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas. She was born March 12, 1937, in Otis, Kan., to Jacob and Bonita (Brack) Brack. Jackie married Don Eulert and they later divorced. On April 14, 1976, Jackie married Orville Monroe in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He preceded her in death on August 3, 2022.

Jackie spent her career in the Colby and Albuquerque school districts as a grade schoolteacher. After her marriage to Orville she moved to Great Bend, Kan. She was a cat lover who raised and spoiled many cats over the years. Jackie was an avid reader and loved to keep her mind sharp with crossword puzzles. When able, she grew and tended to a beautiful garden full of colorful flowers. She loved shopping – whether it was a day trip out of town or ordering over the phone from QVC. Above all else, Jackie loved spending time with her friends and family.

She was born March 12, 1937, in Otis, Kan., to Jacob and Bonita (Brack) Brack. Jackie married Don Eulert and they later divorced. On April 14, 1976, Jackie married Orville Monroe in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He preceded her in death on August 3, 2022.Jackie spent her career in the Colby and Albuquerque school districts as a grade schoolteacher. After her marriage to Orville she moved to Great Bend, Kan. She was a cat lover who raised and spoiled many cats over the years. Jackie was an avid reader and loved to keep her mind sharp with crossword puzzles. When able, she grew and tended to a beautiful garden full of colorful flowers. She loved shopping – whether it was a day trip out of town or ordering over the phone from QVC. Jacquelyn 'Jackie' Monroe, age 87

Sherry Ann (Dreher) Trevino, beloved daughter, loving mother, and cherished grandmother, passed away March 28, 2025, in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 49. She was born on April 12, 1975, to Victor and Sue (Barragree) Dreher in Great Bend.

Sherry married Felipe Trevino April 29, 2018, in Larned. She was a devoted CNA/CMA at Diversicare and for 17 years, dedicated herself to caring for others with compassion and grace.

Sherry’s life was marked by her unwavering love for her family, her church, and her dogs. She had a special bond with her cousins Lori, Robin, and Dena, as well as her aunt Judy Barragree Folsom. Summers spent at the family farm in Kingman and Turon hold special memories of fishing, laughter, and love. Sherry’s love for animals was evident in her nurturing and compassionate nature. She found joy in spending time outdoors, basking in the beauty of nature. Her sunny disposition and infectious laughter brought light to all those around her. Sherry’s kindness, laughter, gentle nature, and radiant smile endeared her to everyone she met.

In her community, Sherry’s warm presence and caring spirit touched the lives of many. She was a pillar of strength and generosity, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Sherry’s dedication to her work and her unwavering faith in Jesus left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Sherry is survived by her husband, Felipe Trevino; sons, Tanner Stevens and Dakota Stevens; daughter, Sydney Stevens; granddaughter, Ila Erin Stevens; she also leaves behind a close-knit circle of aunts, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and father of her children, Lance Erin Stevens.

Jenneth Kay “Jan” Karlin, 77, passed away April 4, 2025, at her home in Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on July 12, 1947, in Great Bend, to Ned and Mary (Schupman) Jacobs. On May 4, 1997, Jan married Bernard “Bernie” Karlin in Hoisington, Kansas.

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Jan served as the County Treasurer for Barton County, after working in the county clerk’s office. She was very civically engaged, being a member of many clubs and organizations, including the Kansas Treasury Association, where she served as president for a year. Jan enjoyed dancing, taking care of her yard and flower garden, and in her younger years, fishing and going to the lake. Above all, she enjoyed time spent with family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Chad Hallmark of Lorraine, and Shawn DeHaan and wife Elisha of Texas; daughter, Jennifer Taylor of Kansas City, Missouri; stepson, William Karlin and wife Stephanie of Erie, Colorado; stepdaughter, Angela Silverthorn and husband Steve of Denver, Colorado; six grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

She is preceded in death by son, John Taylor, Jr.; her parents; and sister, Joyce May.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 14, 2025, with family receiving guests prior from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Shawn Patrick Casey, 65, passed away April 3, 2025, at Credo Senior Living, Hoisington, Kan. Shawn was born December 14, 1959, in Great Bend, Kan. to Martin and Kathleen (Keenan) Casey. Previously married to Candace (Hasten), Shawn later married Hope (Crawford) Bell Dec. 12, 2012, in Great Bend.

Shawn was a lifetime resident of Great Bend. He had been employed at Larned State Hospital as a MHDT since 2011, previously working as a chain hand for Petromark. He was a member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints-Great Bend and NA and enjoyed watching TV crime series and the Kansas City Chiefs. Shawn was known as a dedicated worker, friend and family member, dropping everything to help anyone in need.

Survivors include his wife, Hope of the home; two sons, Miles Casey and Cameron Casey both of San Diego, Calif.; six stepsons, James Burch (Amber) of Santa Fe, Texas, Shawny Burch of Wichita, Kan., Keifer Burch (Cyndi) of Kingman, Shadowhawke Burch (Ali) of Wichita, Graywolf Burch (Nikki) of Minn., and Forestwalker Burch of Benton, Mo.; one brother, Kevin Casey of Great Bend; two sisters, Caron Zager of Great Bend, and Connie Jones (Mason) of Overland Park; many grandchildren; and two beloved Dachshunds, Otis and Cammie. Shawn was preceded in passing by his parents, Martin and Kathleen Casey; and brother-in-law, Michael Zager.

Ruth Anita Weller, 94, passed away April 4, 2025, at Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on October 10, 1930, in Bern, Kansas, to Glen and Ola (Miller) Platt. On May 23, 1950, she married Ralph E. Weller in Laclede, Kansas. He passed away on August 12, 2004, after 54 years of marriage.

Ruth grew up in Onaga and graduated from Onaga High School with the class of 1948. Following her graduation, she worked as a waitress at a café in Onaga until Mr. Art Wentz hired her as a bookkeeper for his Ford car and tractor dealership, where she worked until her marriage. After marrying Ralph, the newlyweds moved frequently living in Natoma, Paradise, Lyons, Pratt, Kinsley, Dodge City, Cimarron, and Washington in Kansas, and Wheeler, Quanah and Amarillo in Texas. In 1961, they moved to Great Bend where Ralph started Midwest Machinery. Years after the start of Ralph’s business Ruth started her own business endeavor opening the Private Collection Antique Shop with her daughter Becky.

Ruth loved travel and the arts and throughout her life was a member of the Wet and Dry Route Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association, the Golden Belt Community Concert Association, Great Bend Community Theatre, and the Kansas Historical Foundation. Ruth enjoyed staying connected with her hometown and was a subscriber and supporter of The Onaga Herald, reading it front to back every week.

Survivors include daughter, Becky Weller of Great Bend; son, David Weller of Great Bend; grandchildren, Machaela Whelan and husband David Norlin of Overland Park, Kinnat Whelan of Lawrence, Jeremey Weller and wife Brooke of Great Bend, and her beautiful great granddaughter Natalie. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; son-in-law, Mike Whelan; brothers, Paul, Delbert, and Bill Platt; and sisters-in-law, Joye Platt and Shirley Platt.

Ruth Weller, age 94

Eugene P. Debes, 85, died April 2, 2025, in Great Bend, Kansas. Born November 3, 1939, he was the son of John A. and Helen (Huslig) Debes. Gene graduated from Odin High School in 1957, and served two years activity duty in the U.S. Army then was in the Army Reserves. He married Phyllis Pfannenstiel in 1961; they later divorced. He worked part time for a local farmer and retired from West Plains Energy.

Gene loved farming and being outdoors. He was a master welder and loved to tinker, whether that was building something or fixing it. Many in the family have his handmade items to cherish. For years he planted a garden, and in his later years took great pride in keeping up his lawn and surrounding trees. Following retirement, he enjoyed socializing in town over morning coffee and afternoon pop.

Gene was a member of Prince of Peace Parish – St. Patrick’s and was a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus Council #862.

Gene is survived by his two daughters, Jolene Johnson of Great Bend and Karla Seals of Wichita; five grandchildren, Adassa (Josh) Roe of Westmoreland, Evan (Nicole) Johnson of Springfield, Illinois, Eric (Holly) Johnson of Great Bend, Rebekah (Peter) Goodge of Lantana, Texas, and Aaron (Melanie) Seals of El Paso, Texas; nine great grandchildren, Sheridan Johnson, Will Roe, Clayton Johnson, Hunter Deisher, Amelia Deisher, Piper Goodge, Logan Seals, Rhys Goodge, and Dean Johnson; eight brothers, Father Don Debes of Victoria, Ken Debes of Hays, Tom Debes of Odin, Bernard Debes of Clyde, Leon Debes of Boonsboro, Maryland, Frank Debes of Odin, John Debes of Hoisington, Mike Debes of Dodge City; and three sisters, Doris Feist of Claflin, Louetta Feist of Claflin, and Patricia Feist of Austin, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Florence Debes, Helen Detmer, and Pauline Oberle; son-in-law, C.D. Johnson; and sister-in-law, Deborah Debes.

Eugene Debes, age 85

Allen Lee Ukens, 91, passed away April 1, 2025, at Azria Health Woodhaven in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on December 17, 1933, in Great Bend to Wesley and Ella C. (Petersen) Ukens. He attended a rural District 11 school near the family farm and graduated from Pawnee Rock High School. In 1963, he married Janet Carr in Great Bend, and they later divorced in 1987.

Allen lived on the family farm near Pawnee Rock for most of his life until moving to Great Bend in 2018. He worked as a farmer and at Marlette Homes in his younger years. Later, he worked as an oil field roughneck. He retired from the Larned State Correctional Facility. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps as a member of the Military Police, and was stationed in San Diego, California, and in Japan during the Korean Conflict. Because of this service, he participated in a Kansas Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2014. Allen was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #180, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and VFW Post 3111. Allen was a country boy and a cowboy at heart, loving classic country music, with his favorites including Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Alan Jackson. He always had a smile on his face, had a fun-loving sense of humor, and was pleasant to be around.

Survivors include son, Daniel Ukens and his wife Colette of Ellinwood; daughter, Cathie McManaman and her husband Barry of Great Bend; grandchildren, Stacie Resner and her husband Matt of Ellinwood, Lexie Ukens of Ellinwood, Dena Hiss and her husband Matt of Great Bend, Brett McManaman and his wife Brittany of League City, Tex., Kelli McManaman of Kansas City, Mo.; great grandsons, William Resner, Noah Resner, Gage Ukens, Graham Hiss, Ethan Hiss, Owen Hiss; and sister, Beverly Juergensen of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Kenneth Ukens.

 </figure>Allen Lee Ukens, 91, passed away April 1, 2025, at Azria Health Woodhaven in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on December 17, 1933, in Great Bend to Wesley and Ella C. (Petersen) Ukens. He attended a rural District 11 school near the family farm and graduated from Pawnee Rock High School. In 1963, he married Janet Carr in Great Bend, and they later divorced in 1987.Allen lived on the family farm near Pawnee Rock for most of his life until moving to Great Bend in 2018. He worked as a farmer and at Marlette Homes in his younger years. Later, he worked as an oil field roughneck. He retired from the Larned State Correctional Facility. Theresa Lavona Dietz, 93, passed away April 2, 2025, at River Bend Assisted Living, Great Bend, Kansas. She was born August 25, 1931, daughter of Wilhelm “Bill” and Olinda (Schwartzkopf) Popp. She was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Reformed Church, which was located 1 mile west of Hwy 281 and 2 miles north of the Galatia blacktop. Growing up on the family farm northwest of Susank, Theresa attended grade school at District #91, then graduated from Hoisington High School in 1949.

Emil S. Dietz and Theresa were married on November 27, 1949, in Milberger, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 12, 2017. Theresa worked alongside her husband on the farm. But her greatest accomplishment was being homemaker for her husband and five children. Her talent knew no bounds with baking, quilting, and gardening. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and a 4-H Leader for the Fairview Scouts.

Survivors include son, Ron Dietz (Debbie) of Dallas, Texas; daughters, Donna Wilhelm (Steve) of Galatia, Jane Steinert (Dennis) of Galatia, Laura Bryant (Daniel Wedermyer) of Rio Rancho, N. Mex., and Nancy Thiel (Mark) of Lenexa; grandchildren, Justin Steinert (Lauren), Kristi Engle (Cody), Todd Bryant (Cassie), Emilie Dietz and Mena Thiel; great grandchildren, Claire Engle, Gwen Engle, Kelsey Bryant, Kyler Bryant and Sophia Steinert; and sister, Shirley Maier. She preceded in death her parents, beloved husband of 68 years, Emil; brother, Vernon Popp; sisters, Delores Dewald-Hanhardt, LoRee Dietz; and granddaughter, Andrea Bryant.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 7, 2025, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Galatia with Reverend Wayne Baldyga presiding. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Galatia. Visitation will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, April 6, 2025, at Bryant Funeral Home with family receiving guests from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorials have been designated to Fairview Cemetery or St. Paul Lutheran Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Road, Great Bend, KS 67530.
