Born July 29, 1934, in Leoti, Wichita County, Kansas, Marlene was the fifth child of Ernest and Martha Lungwitz. She graduated from Wichita East High School in 1952 and attended Hutchinson Community College where she met the love of her life, William Henry Ernsting, in the fall of 1952. It was love at first sight and they were married June 27, 1953, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wichita. 

The couple lived in Ogden while William served in the U.S. Army at Ft. Riley, and then moved to Hays, Kansas. The couple lived in Honduras in 1957-58 before locating to Ellinwood, where she resided for the next 66 years. Marlene and William operated the Ernsting family farm south of Ellinwood for 15 years before establishing Ernsting Radiator Service (Ernsting’s Inc.) in 1972. They were a team in the business that provided dozens of local youth their first jobs, and the company remains a steady employer to the current day. 

Marlene was dedicated to service at St. John’s Lutheran Church in a variety of leadership roles and remained active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League for more than 50 years. She was an initial and long-time board member for the international Lutheran mission agency Lead a Child. She was elected to two consecutive terms (1989-1997) on the Barton Community College Board of Trustees. She served on the board and volunteered at the Barton County Historical Society for more than 20 years. She loved to travel, was a voracious reader, an avid bridge player, believed red wine far superior to white, and followed every pitch, pass, and shot of the Royals, Chiefs, Shockers, Wildcats, Jayhawks, and Cougars. In the spring she gardened, which meant she pulled weeds, planted flowers, and then pulled more weeds. She famously entertained family and friends at her pool and patio in the summers to the sounds of splashing, laughing, and the slam of the back door as she entered the house for more beverages, snacks, or one more towel. In more recent days, she waged a long war with her cell phone.

 Marlene was preceded in death by her husband, William Ernsting (2010), and son Matthew Ernsting (2019); and siblings LeRoy Lungwitz and Kenneth Lungwitz. She is survived by her sons Guy Ernsting of Ellinwood, Kansas, and Andrew Ernsting and his wife, Kristi, of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren Levi Ernsting, Rebeka Watson, Jena Lynn, Drew Ernsting, and Jake Ernsting, four great grandchildren; and siblings Lillian Frey, Lorna Hohman, and Leon Lungwitz.

Funeral service will take place 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 24, at St. John Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery in Ellinwood. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 23 at Minnis Chapel in Ellinwood from 2-8 p.m. with family receiving friends from 5-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Leadachild or Barton Co. Marlene Ernsting, age 89

Eugene
Francis Skolaut, 83, passed away July 17, 2024, at Azria Heath Care, Great
Bend, Kansas. He was born March 13, 1941, in Great Bend, to Joseph and Gertrude
(Mauler) Skolaut.

After
graduating Pawnee Rock high school, Eugene joined the National Guard and served
for six years. He was a lifetime resident of rural Olmitz. Eugene was a
dedicated farmer, stockman, and diary man. He loved to drive his four-wheeler,
was a very accomplished welder but above all, he was kind, loving, thoughtful,
generous, and a hard worker. 

Survivors
include one sister; Joann Koriel (John) of Rush Center and two brothers; Vernon
Skolaut of Olmitz, Charles Skolaut (Mary) of Great Bend, nieces; Elizabeth
Schmidt of Eudora, Angela Harvey (Flynn) of Liberty, Missouri, great niece;
Brianna Schmidt, great nephews; Connor Schmidt, Dylan Schmidt, Carson Harvey,
and Tucker Harvey. He was proceeded in death by his parents and nephew; Ethan
Schmidt.

Kathy Elliott, age 70

Melba Lucille Woods, 95, passed away July 13, 2024, at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born March 4, 1929, in St. John, the daughter of Charles W. and Anna C. Schmer Schmidt.

An area resident since 1953, she was a hairdresser for 44 years. She enjoyed attending numerous churches and was a member of First Christian Church, past member of Saints Mary and Martha of Bethany Episcopal Church and Escue Chapel CME Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Santa Fe Trail Center-Fort Larned Historical Society, and organized the Broadway Bells. A local philanthropist, she helped with the move of the Escue Church in 2006 to the Santa Fe Trail Center, in 2008 she built the Dale and Melba Woods Farm and Auto Museum, and in 2010 built the Dale and Melba Woods Fitness Center.

On Dec. 31, 1952, she married Dale Woods at Tunica, Miss.; he preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 1998.

Survivors include: her loving family and her dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and three brothers, Warren Schmidt, Raymond Schmidt, and Edward Schmidt.

Melba Woods, age 95

Carolyn Sue Hunt, 79, passed away July 15, 2024, at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

She was born Feb. 16, 1945, in Larned, the daughter of Raymond and Margaret Wagaman Swartz.

A longtime area resident Carolyn was a daycare provider and later a mental health aide at Larned State Hospital. She was a member of First Christian Church and a volunteer at Pawnee County Humane Society, Larned Greenhouse, Christian Women Thrift Store, Larned State Hospital Greenhouse, and took pets to visit the nursing home. She was a longtime super fan of the KU Jayhawks and liked gardening, flowers, and animals. Carolyn loved spending time with her grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was known for always remembering birthdays with a card. She could often be found walking her dog at the pond or on her porch with friends. She was truly a devoted and loving wife, mom, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend.

On Oct. 20, 1963, she married Dennis James Hunt at Macksville; he preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 1992.

Survivors include: two sons, Michael Hunt, Garfield, Mark Hunt, Larned; daughter, Jamie (Mike) Mehl, Olathe; two brothers, Bob Swartz, Dodge City, Ron (Sarah) Swartz, Philippines; two grandchildren, Christopher (Allie) Mehl, Roeland Park, Garrett Mehl, Olathe; her dog, Precious, her cat, Princess, and her great grand dogs, Caboose and Ladle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Dennis R. (Denny) Hunt; three brothers, J.R. Swartz, Dick Swartz, Billy Swartz; two sisters, Virginia Shearrer and Betty Hood.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2024, at First Christian Church, Larned, with Pastor Damon Bradley presiding. Sharon Kay Bowers, 83, passed away
July 15, 2024, at Hospice House of Reno County, Hutchinson, Kansas. She was
born on October 23, 1940, in Kansas City, Missouri, and raised in Abilene,
Kansas, by Paul LeRoy and Mae Mary (Morgan) Fisher. On April 26, 1959, she
married James Shelley Bowers in Abilene, Kansas. He passed on January 22, 2017.

A Great Bend resident from 1962 coming
from Oberlin, Sharon worked as a RN, sharing her gift with patients at Central
Kansas Medical Center, Cherry Village, and Larned State Hospital prior to her
retirement. She was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, serving as
president of the St. Mark WELCA, along with other roles. Sharon was a Camp Fire
Leader, Boy Scout Den Mother, and the president of the Resident Council at
River Bend Assisted Living. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting – especially baby
blankets, and jigsaw puzzles.

Survivors include three sons, Barry
Bowers and wife Monica of Great Bend, Robert Bowers and wife Jane of Ottawa,
and Mark Bowers and wife Shirley of Great Bend; one daughter, Shelley Chrivia
and husband Joe of Lupton, Michigan; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her
husband, James; her parents; and brother, Karl Fisher.

There will be no visitation as

Eloise Lorraine Winkelman, 98, died July 15, 2024, in Ellinwood, Kansas. She was born to Nic and Emma Panning Suhler, May 17, 1924, on the family farm east of Ellinwood. 

She attended the country elementary school and then Ellinwood schools, graduating in 1943. She married Maurice Winkelman on Jan. 18, 1948. He died in January 2012. She was a homemaker, secretary, and quiltmaker. She was a lifetime and active member of St. John Lutheran Church. 

Survivors include her children, Lois Sierra, Lawrence, Tim and his wife Karen, Great Bend, Monte (Marlana), Sioux City, Iowa; daughter-in-law Jeanette Winkelman, Tulsa, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, three great-granddaughters, sister-in-law Joan Winkelman, Lenexa; son-in-law Mike Sierra, Lawrence; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was proceeded in death by her oldest son Bruce in 2015, her brother Robert Suhler, and sister Waneta Mausolf. 

Services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 19, at St. John Lutheran Church in Ellinwood. Visitation at Minnis Chapel will be from 2-6 PM Thursday, with family present from 6 to 8. Glen B. Henderson, 92, passed away
July 14, 2024, at Premier Living Center, Wichita, Kansas. He was born on November
28, 1931, in Scranton, Arkansas, to Oliver and Iva (Garrison) Henderson. On March
22, 1952, he married Wanda Howell in Russellville, Arkansas. She passed on July
1, 2003.

A resident of Arkansas until 1978,
Glen started his career in the poultry industry working for Arkansas Valley
Industry. He later formed a partnership as Double H Farm operating an egg
poultry plant and establishing the first motel in Yell County. Once he moved to
Kansas, he worked for Pawnee Beef Builders then switched to the transport side
of agriculture founding Henderson Trucking Company, where he hauled and
brokered hay.

Glen was a member of the First
Assembly of God Church in Russellville as well as Great Bend, Kansas, where he
served as a deacon. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Russellville,
Arkansas Poultry Association, and Board of Directors for PCA. He enjoyed
raising yorkies and birds. 

Survivors include his beloved sons,
Dr. Rusty Henderson and wife Cindy of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Kevin Henderson
and wife Lonna of Wichita; three grandchildren, Chase Henderson and wife
Elizabeth of Nashville, Tennessee, Amber Maurer and husband Brandon of Wichita,
Ethan Henderson and wife Mikaela of Hays; three great grandchildren, Sheppard
and Olive Henderson, and Bailey Maurer; and numerous loved ones.

He is preceded in death by his wife,

Gerald Eugene Mauler, 85, passed away
July 13, 2024, at Medicalodges of Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on February 27,
1939, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Bernard F. and Hermina A. (Skolaut) Mauler. On June
6, 1960, he married Lois A. Stoss at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Olmitz,
Kansas.

A lifetime Barton County resident,
Gerald graduated from Otis High School in 1957, then attended Kansas State
University before transferring to Southeast Votech in Nebraska where he studied
mechanics. He then returned to Great Bend and worked at Parish Motors, later
Marmie Motors as a mechanic, even going on to share that knowledge by teaching
mechanic courses at Barton Community College. Gerald eventually made the switch
as a fourth-generation farmer at 4M Farm, which included raising cattle and growing
and selling certified seed. 

Gerald was a member of Prince of Peace
Parish and was a faithful navigator as a fourth degree Knight of Columbus. He
never met a stranger and was an active member of his community. Gerald was a delegate
to the Kansas State Board of Agriculture, member of the 4H Holding Board, ASCS
Board, Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, and Sunflower Polka Club. He was
instrumental in starting the Barton County Fair and the Tractor Pull. Gerald
taught tractor safety courses, built stock cars for racing, and enjoyed bowling
and golfing. Above all, he loved his family, always being there for them and
never missing an event. 

Survivors include his wife of 64
years, Lois; children, Kevin Mauler and fiancé Pollie Unruh of Great Bend,
Kathy Fischer of Great Bend, Connie McKee and husband Bill of Colleyville,
Texas, Jeff Mauler and wife Sally of Great Bend, and Shelly Taylor and husband
Deron of Olathe; sixteen grandchildren, Brandon Mauler and wife Mindy, Kaley
Williams and husband Brett, Rebecca Karlin and husband Matt, Trent Mauler and
wife Chelsea, Kenzie Folk and husband Ben, Maddi Unruh, McKenna Stetler and

Samuel Stephen Freeman, 68, passed away on July 10, 2024 near Pawnee Rock, KS.&nbsp; Born in Brushy Knob, MO on October 23, 1955 he was the son of Chester &amp; Helen&nbsp;(Lacey)&nbsp;Freeman. Sam was a resident of Ellinwood since 1989 formerly of Hays and Missouri. He married Joan Dechant on July 23, 1984. He worked as a machinist from 1989-2007 at GBI and later was a custom harvester before retiring around 2020. He could fix anything and enjoyed working with his hands from vehicles, construction and raising his gardens. He had a passion collecting antiques of any kind and riding his motorcycles.&nbsp;He would help anyone and knew no strangers.&nbsp;Sam loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He was always happy to watch his grandchildren and teach them all he knew.&nbsp; He will be dearly missed.&nbsp;

Helen Anne Wetzel, 90, passed away
July 13, 2024, at Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on
July 2, 1934, to George Paul and Alta (Morris) Maskus in Ford County, Kansas.
Helen was baptized as an infant at St. Michaels Lutheran Church in Hodgeman
County on August 5, 1934, her sponsors being Henry and Bertha Niedens. She was
confirmed in the Lutheran faith in June 1946 at St. Michaels. Helen attended
grade school in Hodgeman County and graduated from Dodge City High School in
1952.

She married Edgar “Ed” Wetzel on
December 28, 1952, at St. Michaels. She followed her Air Force husband for 3
years of married life before moving to Great Bend in December 1955. Helen was a
homemaker.

Helen was a member of Trinity Lutheran
Church since 1955, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, youth leader,
member of the Care team, and assisted with LOGOS and Vacation Bible School. She
also served as secretary and president of Bethany Circle. 

She enjoyed playing Bridge, spending
time with her family - especially the great great granddaughters, singing, good
friends, and reading. She and Ed loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Jamaica,
Hawaii, Alaska, Acapulco, Canada, Niagara Falls, and a Caribbean cruise for a
belated honeymoon. Many fond memories were made while wintering in South Texas.

Survivors include her son, Randy
Wetzel and wife Brenda of Great Bend; daughter, Renee Holl and husband Dennis
of St. John; grandson, Dennis Price of Wichita; three great grandchildren,
Haley Jackson and husband Chris of Russell, Cody Piland and wife Chelsa of
Wichita, and Ava Winters of Winfield; three great great granddaughters, Kaylee Jackson,
Kellie Jackson, and Peyton Piland; two brothers, Jim Maskus and wife Pat of
Edmond, Oklahoma, and Richard Maskus and wife Linda of Bolivar, Missouri;

Dutch Mannel, age 70 years, of Great Bend, Kansas passed away on Wednesday morning, July 10, 2024 at Azria Health Woodhaven in Great Bend.&nbsp; Dutch was born on September 4, 1953 at Ellsworth, Kansas to Paul O. and Fern (Smith) Mannel.&nbsp; He grew up in Lincoln County, Kansas and lived in various locations including Ellsworth, Hutchinson, Burrton, Holyrood, Wichita, St. John and Salina, Kansas before coming to Great Bend to live with his daughter April in 2019.&nbsp; Dutch worked for S&amp;K Oil Production in Burrton, Kansas until a back injury and health issues caused him to be disabled at the age of 32.&nbsp; He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, traveling, and was active on social media and had a circle of friends he enjoyed keeping in contact with.

Dutch Mannel, age 70

&nbsp;Jeffrey M. Loesch, 68, passed away on July 10, 2024, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Born on Aug. 24, 1955, in Lyons to parents Lewis and Eloise (Smith) Loesch, Jeffrey graduated from Chase High School (1973) and later attended Dodge City CC and FHSU. He worked for many years custom cutting and for Farmland, later CHS Refinery, as a truck driver.&nbsp; 

Jeffrey was a longtime resident of Dodge City. He would often be seen enjoying the local rodeos and races. Survivors include brothers, James “Jim” (Judy) Loesch, Hoisington,&nbsp; and Jerald “Jerry” (Brenda) Loesch, Great Bend; sister, Janean (David) Hicks, Inman. Other survivors include several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Jeffrey was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Eloise Loesch; grandparents P.G. and Mamie (Blank) Loesch and Francis and Hilda (Rose) Smith.

Memorial service will take place Friday, July 19 at 10 a.m. at Minnis Chapel in Ellinwood. Inurnment will follow at Hilltop Cemetery, Raymond, followed by a reception at Raymond Community Center. Born on Aug. 24, 1955, in Lyons to parents Lewis and Eloise (Smith) Loesch, Jeffrey graduated from Chase High School (1973) and later attended Dodge City CC and FHSU. He worked for many years custom cutting and for Farmland, later CHS Refinery, as a truck driver.&nbsp; Jeffrey was a longtime resident of Dodge City. He would often be seen enjoying the local rodeos and races. Survivors include brothers, James “Jim” (Judy) Loesch, Hoisington,&nbsp; and Jerald “Jerry” (Brenda) Loesch, Great Bend; sister, Janean (David) Hicks, Inman. Other survivors include several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.Jeffrey was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Eloise Loesch; grandparents P.G. and Mamie (Blank) Loesch and Francis and Hilda (Rose) Smith.Memorial service will take place Friday, July 19 at 10 a.m. at Minnis Chapel in Ellinwood. Jeffrey Loesch, age 68

Steven Ray Wornkey, Sr., 76, passed away July 9, 2024, at his home in Great Bend. He was born on June 26, 1948, in Great Bend, to Roy D. and Maxine (Kilgore) Wornkey. On Sept. 5, 1975, he married Rebecca Sue “Becky” Sander in Great Bend. She passed on Nov. 18, 2019.



A lifetime area resident, Steven worked as a gas service technician for Midwest Energy for 18 years prior to his retirement. He was a graduate of Ellinwood High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Steven enjoyed fishing, playing slot machines, and was a golf enthusiast, belonging to Grove Park Golf Club. He was a caring father, loving brother, and adored his grandchildren. 



Survivors include four sons, Shawn Wornkey and spouse Mitch of Hollywood, Fla., Steven Wornkey, Jr., Alan L. Wornkey and spouse Sheri, and Chad Wornkey, all of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Blake and Dylan Wondra, and Heaven and Nicholas Wornkey; one great-grandchild, River Wornkey; three brothers, Jerry Wornkey of Scottsbluff, Neb., Tom Wornkey and wife Chris, and Tim Wornkey and wife Pam, all of Ellinwood; sister, Pam Nowak of Holcomb; and numerous loved ones.



He is preceded in death by his wife, Becky; son, Darren Wornkey; parents; and two brothers, Jim and Don Wornkey.



Visitation will take place from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home. Steven Wornkey, Sr., age 76

Warren Ervin McConnell, 89, Salina, passed away on July 8, 2024, at Salina Regional Health Center with his family by his side. He was born on November 9, 1934, in Haileyville, Oklahoma to William Warren McConnell and Zelma (Allen) McConnell. His stepmother was Neva (Walford) McConnell.

He married Patricia Ann Bahr on October 6, 1959.He served in the U.S. Marine Corp and was honorably discharged with the rank of “Sergeant”. He was a police officer for the City of Hoisington for 13 years as a Captain. He was a postal worker for 38 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was Grand Knight &amp; District Deputy. He was a volunteer for the Hoisington Fire Department for over 25 years. He was a Hunter Safety Instructor for 20 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents; stepmother; wife, Patricia McConnell; half-brothers; Warren Lee, Samuel, Kenneth McConnell, and Harley English and brother-in-law; Tom Call.

Survivors include children, Edwinda (Wayne) Day, Weldon (Karla) McConnell, Jan (Jody) Pfannenstiel, and Renee (Scott) Suppes; seven grandchildren, Miranda Flores, Kristen Flores and Erica (Robert) Harford, Dr. Sarah (Nate) Thomas, Nathan McConnell, Lauren Suppes and MaKayla Suppes; sisters-in-law, Luella Call, Rita Bahr, Jenelda Moore, and Frances Dietz; great-grandchildren, Dakotah and Colton Harlin, John, Matthew, Kallie, Lucas and Brook Harford; half-brothers and half- sisters, Paula Shelly, Frances, Forest and Kathy English and many nieces and nephews.

Warren McConnell, age 89

Allen Lloyd Graves, 80, died July 7, 2024, at HaysMed, Hays. He was born Aug. 21, 1943, in Hoisington, the son of James and Velma (Moore) Graves. In 1962, he graduated from Hoisington High School. He then served during the Vietnam War with the United States Navy from 1962 until 1966.

A lifetime Hoisington resident, Allen worked for Sound Control and later retired from the City of Hoisington as the water plant operator 3. He was a member of the V.F.W. and a former officer in the American Legion Post #286, Hoisington. An avid motorcycle enthusiast, he was proud to ride as a member of the Legion Riders. Allen spent time with his children hunting and fishing and coaching their sports teams. He also loved his appaloosa horses, and his Welsh corgi dogs, but especially loved attending all of his grandchildren’s events.

He is survived by his two children; Shawn (Christine) Graves of Topeka, and Stacey (Randy) Hitschmann of Beaver; and two sisters, Donna Ritchie of Ninety-Six, S.C., and Darleen Demel of Hoisington; a brother, Jimmy Graves of Herculaneum, Mo.; six grandchildren, Jason Vasquez of Claflin, Jennifer (A.J.) Medina of Castle Rock, Colo., Nicole (Joe) Cotton, Natalie Graves, Ryan Graves, and Raelynn Graves, all of Topeka; and two great-grandchildren, Derrick and Naomi Cotton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother-in-law, Tom Demel.

Per Allen’s wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the book now until service. Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Allen Graves, age 80

Jeffery V. "Munk" Scarborough, 57, earned his wings on July 7, 2024, with family and friends by his side. &nbsp;Jeff&nbsp;was born on January 29, 1967 in Houston, Texas. &nbsp;He grew up in Gorham, Kansas, and graduated from Gorham High School in the Class of ’85. Jeff was a master electrician and owned Jay Vee’s Electric for over 20 years. &nbsp;

Jeff met his wife, Kris Miller, in elementary school. &nbsp;They began dating in high school and were&nbsp;married on December 25, 1989. Jeff and Kris were&nbsp;the true definition of soulmates. In good times and bad they always came together and stuck by each other’s side. They were blessed with two children: Jessica and Luke.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jeff was incredibly proud of his children's accomplishments, and he always made sure they knew it.&nbsp;

During his life he had many titles: husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, but his favorite title was “Papa J”.&nbsp; Jeff’s memory will live on in the hearts of his five grandchildren: Eli, Dax, Colt, Caid, and Chloe.&nbsp;He loved nothing more than spending time with his kids and grandkids at the farm.&nbsp;&nbsp;In his spare time, Jeff also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson Fat Boy, cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs, and camping at Lake Wilson.&nbsp;

Jeff was a remarkable man. He always believed when times got tough you just keep going, never quit. If he could tell us anything right now,&nbsp;he would say “don’t mourn my death. &nbsp;Remember everything I taught you and keep going: Scarborough Strong!”

Jeff’s surviving family includes his loving wife of 34 years and best friend, Kris Scarborough; children: Jessica (Blake) Stoppel and Luke (Katie) Scarborough; five grandchildren: Elijah Scarborough, Daxton Scarborough, Colt Stoppel, Caiden Scarborough, and Chloe Stoppel; his sister, Kelly (Eric) Reddig; brother-in-law, Bill (Dulce) Miller; nieces and nephews: Kylie Reddig, Hunter Reddig, Johnny (Erica) Keener, Jaelyn Keener, Nathan (Megan) Keener, Evan Keener, and Kelton Wallace; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.&nbsp;

Jeff is proceeded by death by his parents,&nbsp;Lonnie and&nbsp;Clyde Munk, and Tommy Scarborough.&nbsp;

A graveside memorial service for Jeff will be held at 6:00 PM, Friday, July 12, 2024, at the Gorham St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. &nbsp;A Celebration of Life luncheon will be held from 1:00 – 5:00 PM, Friday, July 12, 2024, at the Gorham Senior Center in Gorham, Kansas. Jeffery 'Munk' Scarborough, age 57

James P. Grossardt, D.V.M., age 76, of Siloam Springs, Ark. died Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

Jim was born Dec. 26, 1947, in Great Bend, the son of Harold C. and Vivian E. (Radenberg) Grossardt. He graduated from Claflin High School in 1965 and later earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1971 from Kansas State University.

Jim served as rank of Captain in the Army Veterinary Corp from 1971 to 1973, stationed at Fort Snelling, St. Paul, Minn.

On May 28, 1972, he married Linda A Hoffman in Lawrence. A daughter Jill and son Mark were born to this union.

In 1974, Jim purchased a mixed animal veterinary practice in Minden, Neb. and was a solo practitioner for 40 years. He was a member of AVMA and NVMA. Jim served on the Minden school board for eight years as well as serving on the Minden Opera House board. His love of music was expressed through the Minden Community Players where he performed in many musical productions. He was a member of the Minden and Siloam Springs Rotary clubs for over 45 years.

Jim was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Minden, Neb. and the New Life Church in Kearney, Neb. Throughout this time, he served as a lay pastor, board member, and third grade and senior high Sunday school teacher. He served as an AWANA leader, with Walk to Emmaus retreats, and during Summer camps at Camp Comeca.

Upon retirement, volunteering made his life rich. He was a volunteer at Siloam Springs Regional Hospital Auxiliary in the material management department as well as New Life Ranch and Siloam's community Joy Choir. Jim was a member of New Life Church in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, where he enjoyed serving on the advisory board, as a small group leader, usher team leader, coffee connection host, and cast member in the Easter drama

Survivors include his wife Linda; daughter Jill Werst with husband Bill and granddaughter Hope of Elgin, Ill.; son Mark Grossardt with wife Amy, granddaughter Eva and grandson Roman of Nashville, Tenn.; sisters Joan Sutton of Topeka, and Marie Bachman of Susank; brother Dr. Ted Grossardt with wife Gretchen of Lexington, Ky.; and a delightful group of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

A Celebration of Life – Welcome Home service will be at New Life Church in Siloam Springs, Ark. on Friday July 12, 2024, at 10 a.m. while a private internment of ashes will be at a later date in Lawrence.

Donald Eugene “Don” Chalfant, 92, passed away July 6, 2024, at his home in Great Bend. He was born on Nov. 27, 1931, in Kinsley, to Charles and Irene (Curtright) Chalfant. On April 5, 1958, he married Vivian True in Hutchinson. She passed on Aug. 8, 2012.

A resident of Great Bend for 60 years, Don worked as a lab technician, later shifting to an optician lab technician, then driving the bus for the Great Bend Senior Center for 15 years. Prior to his careers, he proudly served his country in the United States Army, as well as the United States Navy Reserves. Don was a member of First Christian Church and Silver Cougar Club. Donald 'Don' Chalfant, age 92

Jack F. Schlessiger, 80, died July 7, 2024, at his home in Claflin. He was born Feb. 2, 1944, in Great Bend, the son of Fred and Esther (Ochs) Schlessiger. Jack graduated from Claflin High School in 1962. He served in the Air National Guard from 1963 to 1971.

In 1967 he married Janice Oberg in Partridge, Kansas.

Jack lived in the Claflin area all his life. He was a farmer and well-known cattleman. He began his farming career as a custom harvester for 17 years. Jack was a co-owner of Barton County Feeders for many years and he truly enjoyed partnering with others and giving them the opportunity in the cattle business.

He was a strong man of faith and a member of the Zion Lutheran Church where he had served as an elder.

He is survived by his wife Janice of the home; a daughter, Jana (Gary) Crittenden of Hesston; two sons, Joe (Tricia) Schlessiger of Ellinwood, and John (Laura) Schlessiger of Claflin; 13 grandchildren, Keith (Claire) Crittenden, Kyle Crittenden, Kade Crittenden, Cassidy Schlessiger, Emma Ricker, James Schlessiger, Gracie Schlessiger, Anna Ricker, Julia Schlessiger, Charlee Schlessiger, Jake Schlessiger, Jonah Schlessiger and Jude Schlessiger. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Esther Schlessiger and twin grandchildren, Max and Ian, and Molly and Jay Schlessiger.

J.R., a lifetime resident of Great Bend, was a member of Prince of Peace Parish and enjoyed fishing hunting, yard work, flower gardening, and above all, sitting on his deck and watching the world go by. A mechanic by trade and a tinkerer at heart, J.R. worked most recently at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center as the head of maintenance for 20 years, and previously at the JC Penney auto center.

Survivors include his sister Linda Piland of Great Bend; brother Tim Meyeres of West Berlin, N.J.; son, Brian Trudeau and wife Misty of Great Bend; daughter, Angela Garcia and husband Hondo of Great Bend; seven grandchildren, Alex, Tony, Carlos, Marissa, Khloe, and twins Kenneth and Jackson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother, David Meyeres; sister, Pat Adams; nephew Terry Piland; and longtime companion, Angela (Hanks) Collier.

Tina Louise (Dykes) Alonzo, 61, passed away July 6, 2024, at Azria Health Great Bend.&nbsp; She was born April 19, 1963, in Great Bend to Bill E. and Theresa (Hipp) Dykes.

Tina, a current resident of Ellinwood, growing up in Great Bend and previously residing in St. John and Rexford, was a member of Prince of Peace Parish and AA.&nbsp; She worked as a Registered Pharmacy Tech, speech para educator, legal secretary, and enjoyed her employment at Dillons and Dairy Queen.&nbsp; Above all, her most heart felt accomplishments were found within helping people.&nbsp; Tina enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading, fellowship through AA, and in her younger years, was a talented water and snow skier.

Survivors include one son, Ethan Walter and his beloved yellow lab Iggy of Menlo; two daughters Audrea Wood and husband Jonathon of Manhattan and Aisha Moss and husband Tanner of Rexford; four grandchildren, Jacob and Owen Wood, and Adelynn and Thayne Moss; five brothers, Mark Dykes of Blaine, Minn., Jeff Dykes and wife Carol of Centennial, Colo.; Luke Dykes and wife Renee of Great Bend, Gary Dykes of Great Bend, and Matt Dykes and wife Tami of Great Bend; four sisters, Lois Dominguez of Great Bend, Gail Cooper and husband Carl of Great Bend, Jane Maresch and husband Edward of Salina, and Lori Morris and husband Tim of Colby; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and nephews, and friends.&nbsp; She was preceded in passing by her parents.

Steven was born May 14, 1950, in Great Bend, the son of Kenneth E. and Delores J. (Michaelis) Hanhardt. He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas, and Barton County.

In his early childhood, he was a member of the Baptist Church, Bison.

Steven enjoyed music, especially sing-a-longs. He loved the social activities he experienced through Sunflower Diversified Services, Great Bend.

Survivors include: his mother, Delores J. Hanhardt, La Crosse; his sister, Debra Wilson (Craig), Sedalia, Colo.; a nephew, Cody Wilson, and family, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; a niece, Kelly Lambert, and family, Centennial, Colo. Other family members include a cousin, Ron Hanhardt (Juanita), Otis; an aunt, Nathalie Hanhardt, and cousin, Lisa Wabel, both of Grand Junction, Colo.; an aunt, Shirley Roth, LaSalle, Colo.; and an uncle, Larry Michaelis, Salina.

William W. “Bill” Pickle, 86, passed away June 29, 2024, at Rice Co. District Hospital, Lyons. He was born on July 13, 1937, in St. Louis, Mo., the son of Arthur and Marie (Tucker) Pickle. In 1961, he married Annie Rowland; she passed in April 2003. Bill then married Cheryl Breeden on March 19, 2005. She survives.

He attended Bear Creek School in Jacksonville, Ill., then proudly served in the United States Army as a mechanic and driver in the 9th Transportation Battalion, 1st Infantry Division during the Vietnam Conflict. Following his time in the service, he landed in Great Bend, and worked for Doonan Truck and Equipment with their tow truck/wrecker department for 38 years prior to his retirement.

Bill was member of the American Legion Post 180, serving as past Post Commander, American Truck Historical Society, and Antique Caterpillar Owners Club of America.

Survivors include his wife of the home; son, Thomas Charles; three daughters, Pam Pennington of Goodland, Missy Seibert and Jennifer Seibert, both of Hutchinson; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bill is preceded in death by a grandson, Jody Allen Charles; his parents; brother, Raymond Pickle; and sister, Lucille Pickle.

William 'Bill' Pickle, age 86 (updated)

Joseph Raymond “Joe” Bussen, 56, passed away July 1, 2024, at University of Kansas Health System in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born February 20, 1968, in Red Cloud, Nebraska, to Gary Dorman and Susan Kennedy. He was soon adopted by Raymond Theodore and Shirley Rose (Leiker) Bussen.

After graduating from Sharon Springs High School, Joe went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in industrial arts from Fort Hays State University. He married Suzanne Commerford on June 13, 1992, in Great Bend, and in 2000, made Great Bend their home.

Joe never had idle hands and opened Joe’s Wood Design in Hoisington where he enjoyed doing home remodels and woodworking. He loved to set up at events with Joe’s Grill and serve the public, alongside his family, with amazing food. He was an engineer at heart and loved to tinker with what one man thought was junk, Joe recreated into treasure. He most recently was given the opportunity to initiate his farming endeavors and had prosperous plans. Growing up, Joe was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Sharon Springs, Kan., and currently a member of Prince of Peace Parish, Great Bend, Knights of Columbus, and attended St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, Kan.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 32 years, Suzanne; son, Kyle Bussen and fiancée Sarah of Basehor; daughter, Rachel Bussen of Hutchinson; a grandchild to arrive Oct. 31; biological grandfather, Jim Dorman of Salina; brothers, Brian Bussen of Denver, Colo., Doug Dorman (April) of Clay Center, Matt Dorman (Nicole) of Abilene; three sisters; Rhonda Winkler (Greg) of Hutchinson, Julie Bussen of Baltimore, Md., Celeste Rains (Mike) of Oakley; sister-in-law Deanna Bussen; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Shirley Bussen; grandmother, Marie Dorman, one brother, Thomas Bussen; and biological father, Gary Dorman.

He was born February 20, 1968, in Red Cloud, Nebraska, to Gary Dorman and Susan Kennedy. He was soon adopted by Raymond Theodore and Shirley Rose (Leiker) Bussen.After graduating from Sharon Springs High School, Joe went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in industrial arts from Fort Hays State University. He married Suzanne Commerford on June 13, 1992, in Great Bend, and in 2000, made Great Bend their home.Joe never had idle hands and opened Joe’s Wood Design in Hoisington where he enjoyed doing home remodels and woodworking.
