Funeral services for Jack Ray Millard will be on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. The service will be held at the First Southern Baptist Church, 3301 19th Street, Great Bend.

An internment will be held at the Hoisington Cemetery Columbarium following the service.

Daniel Thomas Hauck, 70, passed away
November 19, 2023, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. &nbsp;He was born January 18,
1953, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Thomas Frank Hauck and Thelma Merleen (Leeper)
Hauck.

Daniel was a proud member of the
military, having served two terms in the United States Navy: from 1969 to 1973,
on the U.S.S. Jouett, and from 1977 to 1981, on the U.S.S. Coral
Sea.&nbsp;&nbsp;After being honorably discharged, he moved on to be a driver
and mechanic for Chism’s Trash Service, in Great Bend, Kansas. Daniel was not
just an employee, but a friendly face to all on his route, from passing out
candy for the kids, handing out treats for the furry friends, and being
followed around and recorded by teens that were interested in his work. &nbsp;

On February 14, 2000, he married the
love of his life, Janice Lynn Goans. To their union, Janice brought along her
daughter, Shawna, and Shawna’s daughter, Caitlin, whom he grew an
unconditional, lifelong bond with. Janice later passed away on April 22, 2007.
Daniel’s heart was shattered by this loss. While he left us much sooner than we
would have wanted, Daniel was ready to be back together with Janice for
eternity.

Survivors include&nbsp;his mother,
Thelma M. Hembree of Hutchinson; children, Shawna Goans of Lincoln, Nebraska,
and Kevin (spouse Tammi) Schreiner of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Caitlin
Schmitt of Lincoln, Nebraska, Nola Schreiner of Austin, Texas, and Gibson
Schreiner of Austin, Texas; siblings, Mike Cooper of Hutchinson, Kelly (spouse
Milton) Clevenger of Colwich, and Amenda Lobstein of Hutchinson; goddaughter,
Leanda Love Mooney, Leadville, Colorado; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces,
and great-nephews. &nbsp;&nbsp;
He is preceded in death by his wife, Janice Lynn Hauck; his stepfather, George
‘Tommy’ Hembree; brother, Robert Lee Hauck; and three infant sisters.

If you knew Daniel, you most likely
knew him as Dan, Danny, Dan-Dan the Trash Man, or Caitlin’s Papa.&nbsp;&nbsp;He
was a devoted family man, and lifelong friend to many. Daniel's passion for his
work, his wife, and his family never failed to shine.&nbsp;He will be greatly
missed and cherished. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Cremation has taken place. Graveside
service for both Daniel and Janice will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday,
September 28, 2024, at Great Bend Cemetery, 4500 Broadway Ave., Great Bend, KS,

Daniel Hauck, age 70

Ermalee Merritt, 89, died Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. &nbsp;She was born March 12, 1935, at Grace Hospital in Hutchinson, to parents, Frank B. Jones and Bertha O. (Rictor) Jones.

Ermalee graduated in 1953 from Reno Community High School, Nickerson. She married her high school sweetheart, Ancil M. Taylor of rural Sterling on October 25, 1953, at Church of Christ on 14th and Adams St., Hutchinson. To their union brought four children: DeeAnn, Maribeth, Max Alan and Lora Lee Taylor.

Ermalee and Ancil lived and farmed at the Taylor place in the rural Sterling area for a number of years prior to re-locating to Great Bend, in 1966. She was a former member of the 14th and Adams Church of Christ in Hutchinson and the Great Bend, Church of Christ at 12th and Stone. Ermalee was a current member of Eastwood Church of Christ, Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Ermalee and Ancil lost their son, Max, to cancer on January 10, 1986, in Great Bend. Ancil died on December 20, 1987, in Great Bend, also due to cancer. She later married Elmo Merritt on November 24, 1990, in Great Bend. &nbsp;They moved to Hutchinson. She was widowed a second time with his passing in 2017. Through all the sorrow and loss in her life, she pressed on, always faithful, hopeful and trusting in her Maker.

Ermalee was a devoted, loving and treasured wife, mother, “grammy,” “great-grammy,” sister, sister-in-law, aunt, niece and friend. Her bright spirit shined through when she offered joy, compassion and encouragement to others. Ermalee’s generosity, kindness and wit blessed many. Ever so stylish and fashionable, she specifically loved jewelry and hats. An accomplished seamstress throughout her lifetime, she made countless wearable and decorative works of art. Ermalee had a special gift for creating stunning floral and interior designs. She loved decorating her home for all the seasons and holidays. Ermalee’s energy, creativity and talent were amazing! She gave the best hugs and being wrapped in her embrace was one of the most comforting places to be. Being lucky enough to be loved by her was the most precious of gifts and she will be missed beyond measure.

Survivors include her three daughters and their spouses: DeeAnn and Jim Krueger of Wichita, Maribeth Benker of Great Bend, Lora and Brent Dungan of &nbsp;Wichita and Fort Collins, CO; six grandchildren, Christopher Krueger of Wichita, KS; Kelsy Krueger of Wichita, Corry (Fradd) Kelly and Justin of Great Bend, Maggie Dungan of Fort Collins, CO, Eva Dungan of Fort Collins, CO and Oliver Dungan of Wichita; great-grandchildren, &nbsp;RaeLynn Rowe and Kimber Rowe of Great Bend, Lennox Krueger of Wichita; and sisters, Ilene (Jones) Roth and Sue (Jones) Hill, all of Hutchinson.

Ermalee was preceded in death by additional family members including: her parents; in-laws Glenn G. and Helen E. Taylor; son-in-law Keith Benker; and step-grandson Kelly Benker; and numerous other valued and loved family members who went before her.&nbsp;

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 6, 2024, at Eastwood Church of Christ, 2500 N. Plum, Hutchinson, with Wayne DeWindt officiating. &nbsp;Friends may sign the book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary. Eldon Clarence Brown, 70, passed away Sept. 17, 2024, at University of Kansas Health Systems – Kansas City, Kansas. He was born on Jan. 5, 1954, in Ainsworth, Neb., to Everett and Wilma (Lake) Brown. On Aug. 25, 1973, he married Susan Owens in Vernon, Texas.&nbsp;

A long time Pawnee Rock resident, Eldon worked as a heavy equipment operator, most recently at Stone Sand Company. He was raised Methodist. Eldon enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Steve Groves and wife Tammy of Dundee, and Chris Brown of Osborne; daughter, Lisa Vonfeldt of Great Bend; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous loved ones.&nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ivan and Glen Brown; and sister, Maxine Davis.&nbsp;

Visitation will take place from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, 2024, with family receiving guests from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Patricia “Patty” Bahr, 83, passed away
September 15, 2024, at Riverbend Assisted Living in Great Bend, KS. She was
born August 9, 1941, to Henry and Frances (Schneider) Bahr. She grew up on the
family farm with her 10 siblings in rural Albert. She moved to Great Bend in
1993. 

Patty worked as a cook for the
Dominican Sisters for 29 years before retiring in 2013. She was a member of St.
Ann’s Catholic Church in Olmitz, where she was Eucharistic minister and member
of the Altar Society. She transferred her membership to Prince of Peace Parish
in Great Bend. Patty enjoyed working jigsaw and word search puzzles, reading,
and cats.

Survivors include brother, Henry
J. Bahr, of Albert; sisters, Sister Francella Bahr, Sister Jeannine Bahr and
Sister Teresa Bahr, ASC, all of Wichita; Joan (Ken) Schreiber and Donna (Eldon)
Keil of Overland Park; seven nieces and one nephew, and great nieces and great
nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her
parents; sisters, Frances Bahr and Sister Mary Ann Bahr, ASC; brothers, Father
Joseph Bahr and James Bahr.

Patricia 'Patty' Bahr, age 83

Francisco "Frank" Zamora Cortez Jr, 65, passed away at Ellinwood District Hospital on Sept. 14, 2024 surrounded by loved ones. Born in San Marcos, TX on July 13, 1959 to parents Francisco and Amelia (Zamora) Cortez. Frank graduated from Texas Tech University in 1983 after graduating he spent his career working in management at numerous hotels and restaurants. He married Connie Starns on April 10, 1990 in Wichita, KS. They have been residents of Ellinwood resident for 20 years.&nbsp;

Survivors include Wife, Connie Starns; Mother, Amelia Cortez; Children, Erica (Chris), Frank ( Abbi) and Steven (Bethany); Granddaughters, Sophia, Olivia, Ingrid, and Aria; Brothers, Tony and Gilbert; Sisters, Mary Alice, Pat, Gloria, and Yolanda. Frank also leaves behind numerous Nieces, Nephews, Aunts, Uncles, and close friends. 

He was preceded in death by his Father, Grandparents, and Brother, Freddy.&nbsp;

Francisco 'Frank' Zamora Cortez Jr, age 65

Helen Ruth
Cheely, 95, passed away September 16, 2024, at Brookdale Senior Living in Great
Bend, Kansas. She was born March 30, 1929, in Dodge City to William and Grace (Murphy)
Remling.

Ruth, as
many affectionately referred to her, grew up in Texas County, Oklahoma on the
family farm. She graduated as Valedictorian at Optima, Okla., grade school and
finished her diploma at Guymon High School. Ruth met the love of her life, Sgt.
James Preston Cheely at the Army Airfield in Liberal. They were married at his
parents’ home in Clearwater, South Carolina on April 11, 1945, two days before
James shipped out to WWII in France. 

After the
war victory, Ruth and James began life together in Oklahoma. They welcomed Ken
Cheely while living in Guyman. In 1950, Ruth and James relocated to Colorado
where James became a Depot Agent for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. They lived
in several small towns along the Missouri Pacific. While living in Lacrosse,
they had their second son, Ray Cheely. They retired to Great Bend where Ruth
worked as a detailed bookkeeper at Sears, Amerine Electric, Roy Rogers
Insurance Agency, and Ray A. Cheely, Chtd. She loved to volunteer her time at
the Barton County Historical Society where she had also served as a former
secretary. She was a member of the Christian Church in Utica and a life member

Cheely, 95, passed away September 16, 2024, at Brookdale Senior Living in Great
Bend, Kansas. She was born March 30, 1929, in Dodge City to William and Grace (Murphy)
Remling.Ruth, as
many affectionately referred to her, grew up in Texas County, Oklahoma on the
family farm. She graduated as Valedictorian at Optima, Okla., grade school and
finished her diploma at Guymon High School. Ruth met the love of her life, Sgt.
James Preston Cheely at the Army Airfield in Liberal. They were married at his
parents’ home in Clearwater, South Carolina on April 11, 1945, two days before
James shipped out to WWII in France. After the
war victory, Ruth and James began life together in Oklahoma. They welcomed Ken
Cheely while living in Guyman. In 1950, Ruth and James relocated to Colorado
where James became a Depot Agent for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. They lived
in several small towns along the Missouri Pacific. While living in Lacrosse,
they had their second son, Ray Cheely. They retired to Great Bend where Ruth
worked as a detailed bookkeeper at Sears, Amerine Electric, Roy Rogers
Insurance Agency, and Ray A. Cheely, Chtd. She loved to volunteer her time at
the Barton County Historical Society where she had also served as a former
secretary. She was a member of the Christian Church in Utica and a life member
of the Order of the Eastern Star. Ruth found joy in visiting and fellowshipping

David Jay Gordon, 68, passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at Thorne Care Center in Hutchinson, KS. David was born November 3, 1955, in Hays, KS, the son of Hiram and Josephine (Dolezal) Gordon.

David graduated from Hoisington High School in 1974. He worked for Eaton Corp as a machinist welder for 15 years and Road Runner as a private contractor delivering public transportation buses. He enjoyed spending his evenings sitting on his porch visiting his neighbors and friends. That’s when he meet his neighbor and close friend Terry. On December 5, 1981, David married Janea Murphy. They were married for 34 years before her passing in 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janea; brother-in-law, Ronald Robertson; infant sister, Kathleen Gordon and nephew Travis Robertson.

David is survived by his sister, Michele Robertson; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Amy Ann Derley was born on Aug. 3,1979 in Larned, the daughter of Dale and Beth Zook. She passed away at her parents’ home on Sept. 12, 2024, at the age of 45 surrounded by her family. Pause for a moment and think back on a memory of Amy, see her smiling face. Remember the love she had for her family, friends and most importantly, her Lord Jesus Christ.

Amy grew up in Larned, her hobbies as a child were hosting many sleepovers with friends and acting as a mother hen to her cousins. During high school, her extracurricular activities included cheerleading, golf and state choir. She was honored to sing in Europe with the Kansas Ambassadors of Music. After school she worked at Ritzmans and on the family farm during the summers. In 1998, she graduated from Larned High School. Amy obtained an Associate Degree in Business from Highland Community College. She then returned to Larned and worked as the high school secretary for several years. She changed jobs and began working at American State Bank, where Amy met the love of her life, Jay Derley, in the Spring of 2004. Later they married on May 14, 2005 in Larned. 

In 2008, Amy and Jay moved to his family farm located between Lewis and Greensburg, where Amy was an active partner in the farm and ranch operations. She did it ALL from working cattle to delivering home-cooked meals. During that time, she enjoyed cooking, dressing to the nines, and being around family and friends. In March of 2010, Amy became what she always wanted to be, a mother. Amy and Jay were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Adrianna, and later that Fall, with Dallas their delightful son. Amy was a dedicated wife and mother always attending her children's events.

Amy was an active member of the Greensburg Global Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher and church board member. Amy felt God had tested her faith several times throughout the many hospitalizations and surgeries during her lifetime. When she was on hospice, Amy reported to a preacher in the family that she related most to Job’s stories in the Bible. One of the last tests of her faith was when Amy received the news that she was not a candidate for a heart and liver transplant by two different clinics.

Survivors include: husband, Jay Derley, two children, Adrianna Jolene and Dallas Wayne of the home, Lewis; her parents, Dale and Beth Zook, Larned; sister, Stacy (Michael) Trout and nephews Colborn and Zavier, Scott City; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lester and Janet Derley, Lewis; sister-in-law, Johnna (Josh) Tyson, children Alyssa and Morgan Derley and Skyler Tyson, Overland Park; sister-in-law, Ronda (Ward) Scantlin, daughter Alex, Dayton, Ohio and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Amy was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Troy Derley, and a nephew, Noah Tyson.

Samantha Marie (Caldwell) Cundiff, 48, passed away at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas on Sept. 13, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Fairbanks, Alaska on April 27, 1976, she was the daughter of Curtis &amp; JoAnn (Lamont) Caldwell. She attended Phillipsburg HS later receiving her certification to become a CMA/CNA. Samantha worked as a caregiver for those with intellectual disabilities. She was a member of the National Honor Society.&nbsp; Samantha was a resident of Ellinwood since 2021 formerly of Hays and Russel. She married Shawn Cundiff on May 21, 2023.&nbsp;

Survivors include husband, Shawn Cundiff, Ellinwood; children, Emma (Jonathan) Williams, Kansas City, KS, Kelli (Sergio) Williams, Hays, Garrett Williams, Hays; sisters, Heidi (Chester) Freeman, Ellinwood and McKenzie (Stan) Flinn, Hays; grandchildren, Tobias and Gabriella. Terri Marie Chartier, 68, passed away September
13, 2024, surrounded by loved ones at her home in Great Bend, Kansas. She was
born on April 17, 1956, in Great Bend, to Clarence E. and Grace (Alexander)
Horyna. On July 19, 1975, she married David Chartier in Great Bend, Kansas.

Living in Great Bend the majority of
her life, Terri was a homemaker. She received her associate degree in Graphic
Design from Barton Community College and was awarded the Most Outstanding
Student Award during that time. Terri was a member of Prince of Peace Parish
and Altar Society. She loved nature and had a heart for animals. Terri would
feed the neighborhood birds and squirrels but especially loved her four cats
and beloved dog.

Survivors include her husband of the
home; son, Adam Chartier of Great Bend; daughter, Angela Krier and husband Chad
of Wichita; four grandchildren, Ashley, Alyson, Katie, Kyrsa; six great
grandchildren with another on the way; six sisters, Barbara Malone, Sherri
Kober, Audrey Henaghan, Jan Johnson-Blevins, Denise Pina, and Debra Pratt. 

She is preceded in death by her
parents; and brother, Clarence R. Horyna.

Visitation will take place from noon
to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2024, with family receiving guests from

Lang, age 77 years, formerly of Great Bend, Kansas passed away at Life Care Center in Burlington, Kansas on Monday evening, September 9, 2024.&nbsp; Don was born on January 9, 1947 at Great Bend to William “Otto” and Mary (Rider) Lang, and graduated from Great Bend High School in 1965.&nbsp; He served in the US Navy from January 1966 to November 1968 aboard the USS Bennington in the Pacific during the Vietnam era.&nbsp; He started Lang’s Electric as a Master Electrician in 1983 and also worked for Great Bend USD428 for over 20 years, retiring in 2012.&nbsp; Don was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #1127 in Great Bend, and was a longtime member of the Church of the Nazarene in Great Bend.&nbsp; He enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, wildlife photography, and hiking and walking.

Donald Lang, age 77

William L. Keener, 72, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse, Kansas.

William was born August 29, 1952, in Danville, Arkansas, the son of Lonnie and Rowena (Thompson) Keener. He was a 30 year resident of La Crosse, Kansas, moving from Great Bend, Kansas. William was self employed and delivered The Hays Daily News and the Great Bend Tribune for many years before his retirement.

William loved fishing. Instead of watching football and basketball games on the television, he much preferred listening to them on the radio. He had an affection for older cars and pickups.

On June 4, 1994, he married Brenda Rogers at the United Methodist Church, McCracken, Kansas.

Survivors include: his wife, Brenda Keener, La Crosse, Kansas; two daughters, Carrie and Crystal; four grandchildren; two brothers, John Keener (Chris), Great Bend, Kansas, and Dalton Keener (Barbara), Pawnee Rock, Kansas; and two sisters, Freda Chapman, La Crosse, Kansas, and Paula Keener, La Crosse, Kansas.

Visitation will be Monday, September 16, 2024, from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas.

He was a 30 year resident of La Crosse, Kansas, moving from Great Bend, Kansas. William was self employed and delivered The Hays Daily News and the Great Bend Tribune for many years before his retirement.William loved fishing. Instead of watching football and basketball games on the television, he much preferred listening to them on the radio. William Keener, age 72

Reverend Fred Kirkpatrick, Jr., age 93, passed away September 11, 2024, at his home in Salina, Kansas. After 77 years of pastoring, he has gone to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A devoted Pastor, Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather, Fred dedicated his life to serving Jesus in everything he did.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He was born on <a href="http://calendar:t2:October%2021,%201930/" target="_blank">October 21, 1930</a>, in Dodge City, Kansas, to Fred Kirkpatrick, Sr. and Eva Lodema (Badgley) Kirkpatrick. The grandson of one of the early Dodge City founders, J.M. Kirkpatrick, Fred often shared stories of old Dodge City and its more raucous days which his grandfather had witnessed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Before television was invented, his family gathered around the big old radio in the living room to listen to the gospel being preached and he found salvation in Jesus Christ. As a young boy, Fred saw the patrons frequenting the many bars and saloons along Front Street and witnessed to them about Jesus and His redemptive power.&nbsp;

At the young age of 17, Fred felt called to attend Fort Wayne Bible College (now Taylor University) in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and become a minister. During the years he attended there, he and Sally Hoofnagle, also from Dodge City, were married and began a life adventure together on <a href="http://calendar:t2:May%2030,%201950/" target="_blank">May 30, 1950</a>.  They lived in Fort Wayne until he completed Bible college.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Following graduation and ordination, the Kirkpatricks moved to Great Bend, Kansas, where they started their first church on Main Street in 1952. As that church grew, he moved the little white chapel building to East 19th street and held services. And finally, he and the congregation purchased the old County Farm west of Great Bend, where it became known as Faith Community Church and Bible College.&nbsp;&nbsp;

An engineer by trade, he worked for many decades at E.B.H. Engineers in Great Bend, designing and constructing countless community infrastructure projects. He loved that work and took the message of the Gospels with him daily. Through his testimony, many people came to know the saving Grace of Jesus Christ.&nbsp;&nbsp;

His passion for Christ drove every aspect of his life. Fred’s vision for a great revival meant not only holding thrice weekly services at Faith Community Church, but also holding nightly services in small communities and homes across Kansas – Mondays in Bunker Hill, Tuesdays in Pratt, Thursdays in Hays and Ellis, Fridays at Full Gospel Businessmen’s meetings across the entire state and Sunday afternoons at the County Jail.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He brought the Billy Graham Film Crusades, Teen Challenge meetings and Women’s Aglow to the area. He was also a State Director for Women’s Aglow for many years. Through his leadership and stewardship in&nbsp;

After losing his wife Sally to cancer, Fred married Glenda (Mountford) Jahnke on <a href="http://calendar:t2:September%2022,%201989/" target="_blank">September 22, 1989</a>. This year marks their 35 years working together for Christ. They brought comfort to many through a ministry of teaching, singing and praising the Lord across Kansas and beyond.&nbsp;

Preaching over 15,000 sermons, Fred’s central message never wavered: The grace of God brings salvation. He always taught that God in His great love sent His only Son into the world to be sacrificed for all of mankind’s sins. And in that simple message, many found the “peace that passes all understanding.” Hearts were changed, families healed, broken bodies mended, and encouragement filled the hearts of those wherever he went.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his first wife Sally, his parents, Fred and Eva Kirkpatrick, plus siblings Kay and Kenton Kirkpatrick.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife Glenda of the home; his loving children, Kristi (Bruce) Kraisinger, Kevin (Paula Stout) Kirkpatrick, and Linda (Doug) Basye, Dr. Lavelle (Doug Stickland) Ellis, and Rev. Broc (Alicia) Jahnke. He had 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren at the time of his passing.  &nbsp;

As an honor to his life’s work, he requested no funeral service so that Jesus may be glorified rather than the works of one man. There will be a praise and worship service at Faith Community Church, 293 W. Barton County Road, Great Bend, Kansas at on October 5, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.&nbsp;

Pastor Kirkpatrick planned this service in advance of his death, and he wanted to have a joyous celebration of his homecoming to heaven. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Faith Community Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Rd., Great Bend, KS 67530.&nbsp;

The family wants to extend to all friends, a generous and prayerful “thank you” for your faithfulness to God’s work down through the years. May God grant you all the Grace and Peace that Fred found those many years ago as a young man in Western Kansas. &nbsp;

Jean Marie Garner, 62, passed away at Ellinwood District Hospital on Sept. 11, 2024. Born Nov. 30, 1961 in Sterling, she was the daughter of Clifford and Vera (Cruth) Steierl. Jean graduated from Buhler HS in 1980 and later Hutchinson Community College with an Associates in Early Childhood Development. Jean worked as a caregiver for clients with special needs and for Ellinwood Packing Plant for eight years before retirement. She married Greg Garner Aug. 20, 2010 in Great Bend. Memberships include Faith Bible Church in Lyons.

Survivors include husband, Greg Garner; children, Melissa (Ryan) Doll, Timothy Welch (Mandy Stos); step-children, Veronica Wiley, Cora (Oz) Usoro, Skylar Wiley; siblings, Jane (David) Cruse and Bill Steierl; beloved Grandchildren, Brenna, Vera Kate, Raylee, Eleanor, Poppy, Nolyn, and Ezekial. Other survivors include many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

The family encourages attendees to wear their favorite KU or Chiefs apparel to the service.

Janet Sue (Jan) Flint, 84, passed away
Sept. 11, 2024, at Medicalodges, Great Bend, Kan.&nbsp; She was born May 3, 1940, in Ellis, Kan., to
Dale E. Carr, Sr. and Grace E. (Mickelson) Carr-Crist.&nbsp; In 1963, she married Allen Ukens in Great
Bend, and divorced in 1987.&nbsp; She married
Hartwell “Tony” Flint in 1991, and they divorced in 1993.

She was raised by her mother and
stepfather, Walt Crist.&nbsp; She attended
Great Bend High School.&nbsp; A resident of
Great Bend, Jan worked at Fuller Brush, and as a lab courier for Central Kansas
Medical Center.&nbsp; A true entrepreneur, Jan
owned and managed the North Main Mobile Park, which later became the Cottonwood
Grove R.V. Park in Great Bend for over 33 years.&nbsp; Through her working years, she learned to be very
independent, often being found maintaining the R.V. Park grounds.&nbsp; Jan was passionate patriot, a member of
Trinity Lutheran Church and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.&nbsp; She enjoyed rock and plant landscaping,
bowling, R.V. traveling, driving cool cars, and collecting carousel horses,
Elvis figurines, “all things” brass and angels.&nbsp;
Above all, Jan enjoyed spending time with family, often being referred
to as the “life of the party” and the grandkids’ buddy. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include two children, Dan
Ukens and wife Colette of Ellinwood, Kan.; daughter, Cathie McManaman and
husband Barry of Great Bend; five grandchildren, Stacie Resner and husband Matt

Janet 'Jan' Flint, age 84

Peggy Lee Latham, 93, died September 9, 2024, at Wheatland Health Care Center, Kingman, Kansas. She was born December 4, 1930, in Hoisington, Kansas, the youngest daughter of O.A. and Lela (Spires) Pennington. Peggy graduated from Hoisington High School in 1949.

On May 19, 1951, she eloped to Las Vegas, New Mexico and married her high school sweetheart, H.N. “Bud” Latham. They lived in Great Bend for several years before moving to Utah in 1968. They later returned to Kansas upon their retirement, residing in Turon.

She is survived by her husband of 73 years; Bud Latham of the home; two daughters, Kala Oaks and husband Jeff of Vernal, Utah, and Annie Hacking and husband Briant of Turon, Kansas; 6 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, June White, Jean Marcum, and Juanita Susank, and her son, Gregory Latham.

A private family graveside service will be held in the Hoisington Cemetery.

Peggy Latham, age 93

&nbsp;Leland Eugene “Gene” Rothenberger, Christ’s loyal servant, 96, passed away from this world to salvation in Jesus on Sept. 6, 2024. He was born on July 21, 1928, in Osborne, to Irvin and Katherine(Humes) Rothenberger. Gene married Grace Eileen Kreft of Natoma on Nov. 20, 1949.

God blessed Gene “The Hydraulic Man” with the knowledge to be an engineer, becoming a highly respected heavy equipment operator and service manager. He was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church.

Gene is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years; two daughters, Marcia Mitchell and Marla Atteberry; grandson, Kyle Kempton; great-grandson; his parents; brother, Gerald Rothenberger; two sisters, Barbara Jo Rothenberger and Jeanette Henry. 

Survivors include son, Steve Rothenberger (Deb) of Salina; three daughters, Joyce Kuntzsch (Jim) of Dorrance, Danna Allison (Jeff) of Great Bend, Kerry E. Rothenberger (Becky Turley) of South Hutchinson; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; brother, Roland “Uncle Red” Rothenberger of Minnesota; and companion and best friend, Lucille Blide of St. John.

Visitation will take place from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024, with family receiving guests from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Great Bend, with Pastor Kenton Abbott presiding. Gene married Grace Eileen Kreft of Natoma on Nov. 20, 1949.God blessed Gene “The Hydraulic Man” with the knowledge to be an engineer, becoming a highly respected heavy equipment operator and service manager. Joseph
“Joe” Ray Boley, 92, passed away September 4, 2024, at Azria Health Woodhaven
in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born December 14, 1931, at Sedgwick, Kansas to
Everett and Marie (Paden) Boley.

Joseph
earned his BME from the University of Wichita in 1955, and was music director
at Dorrance from 1955, through May 1958. While in Dorrance, he married Darlene
Orth from Andale on December 26, 1955.&nbsp;
She passed away March 25, 2021, as a result of a stroke in January 2019.

Joseph and
Darlene moved to Great Bend where he was the USD 428 band director and Darlene
was vocal director at Roosevelt Junior High one year and taught private piano
and organ lessons. During his 36 years in Great Bend, Joseph was band director
for Great Bend High School, Roosevelt Junior High School, Great Bend Middle
School, area elementary schools, and was a music supervisor for a time. He
served previously as president of the Great Bend National Educators
Association, served on the Kansas State Teachers Association Board of Directors
one term, and was an active member in the Great Bend Retired School Personnel
Association. He had membership in professional music organizations including
MENC, KMEA, and a member of KBA since 1974.

Joseph was
Municipal Band director from 1959, until the summer of 1963. He was co-director
of the Argonne Rebels Drum and Bugle Corps until 1971 and president of the
Golden Belt Community Concert Association for sixteen years. He served as past
director of the city recreation band program and received the Great Bend USD
428 Master Teacher Award for 1980-1981, past president of KBA in 1981, awarded
KBA Outstanding Band Master of the year in 2001, Home for the Holiday Parade
Marshal in 2009, Kiwanis GB Greater Award in 2011, served as Jazz Festival
vice-president for twenty-four years, secretary for the KMEA District V (Now
Southwest Division) for several years, a member of the Ellinwood Wheat Bowl
football half-time committee, former adjudicator for KSHAA, served several
years on the Barton County Historical Society board of directors, a member of
Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick where he directed the adult choir for
over 25 years, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #862. Joseph’s
passion for music, students, history, and people sparked him to become an
author at 90 years old by writing a book on the history of Great Bend area
bands. 

Survivors
include three daughters: Maggie McKain of Osborne, Mary McMahan and her husband
Bryan of Piedmont, South Dakota, JoAnn Ishmael and her husband Dugan of Lee’s
Summit, Missouri, eight grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife, Darlene (Orth) Boley and son-in-law, C.J.
McKain.

Joseph 'Joe' Boley, age 92

Richard
Francis Smolik, 92, passed away September 3, 2024, at Clara Barton Hospital in
Hoisington, Kansas. He was born October 2, 1931, to Frank and Agnes (Rudolf)
Smolik on the family homestead near Timken.

Richard attended
Timken country schools before dedicating his life as a farmer and stockman. He
was a mechanic, in his own shop, that was located on the farm. He enlisted in
the United States Army and served proudly in the Korean War. Richard married
Donna Ochs September 12, 1959, at Timken, Kansas.&nbsp; She died November 17, 2023. He was a member
of Holy Trinity Church in Timken and attended Prince of Peace Parish, Great
Bend. Richard was a jack of all trades. He designed and built sheds on the farm,
loved to collect and rebuild antique tractors, and collected many things including
model cars. 

Survivors
include two sons; Ken Smolik and wife Kris of Great Bend, Gerald Smolik of
Timken, daughter; Mary Bieker and husband Darrell of Great Bend, brother;
Robert Smolik of Great Bend, grandchildren;, Scott Smolik and wife Cassie,
Michael Smolik and wife Kendyll, Michala Bieker, and Emma Bieker; three great grandchildren, Olivia
Smolik, Connor Smolik and Levi Smolik; and four step-great grandchildren, Kadyn
Schmidt, Carsyn Berggren, Brock Berggren and McKoy Berggren. He was
preceded in death by a brother; Matthew Smolik and a sister; Betty Axman.

Visitation will be held Sunday

Richard Smolik, age 92

Surrounded by loved ones, Dorothy D.
Miller, 89, was called home by her Lord and Savior on August 7, 2024, in Great
Bend, Kansas. She passed away peacefully after a very long and courageous
battle with Alzheimer’s disease. 

Dorothy was born on May 14, 1935 to
Eugene V. and Frankie A. Maples in Rising Star, Texas. Later, she and her
family relocated to Ellinwood, Kansas. When Dorothy was a Junior in High School
she met her soulmate, Richard (Dick) Miller. They were married the following
year on November 27, 1953, in Yuma, Arizona, while Dick was serving in the U.S.
Navy. Throughout their seventy years of marriage they lived primarily in Great
Bend and Ellinwood, and were church members of St. Mark Lutheran and Trinity
Lutheran. Dick and Dorothy were blessed with three children, Debra Hodge
(James, deceased), Dana McVay (James), and Rick Miller (Amber), all of Great
Bend. 

Dorothy was lovingly known as “Gandi”
to her grandchildren, Laci Rusco (Jamie) of Emporia, Kansas, Sophia Kratz
(Henry) of Donalds, So. Carolina, Jami Mann (Levi) of Wichita, Kansas; and
great-grandchildren, Myah Frick (Kyle) of Emporia, Max Rusco and Molly Rusco of
Emporia, Charlie Kratz and Wyatt Kratz of Donalds, So. Carolina, and Judah Mann
- expected in October, 2024. Her first great-great-grandchild, Finn Frick, is
expected in December, 2024.

Dorothy leaves behind the love of her
life, affectionately known as “Papa”, and their devoted companion, Rusty. She
is also survived by a sister, Connie Sanders (Brian) of Burneyville, Oklahoma;
a brother, Jim Maples (Malina) of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma; and many nieces,
nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Dorothy enjoyed making friends and
serving the public in fashion retail positions. Above all, she found the most
joy in her job as a homemaker. Armed with paint brushes, silk flowers,
trinkets, and treasures, she had a creative flair and a passion for making
everything welcoming and beautiful. There is no doubt, her halo is glowing
brightly in the most beautiful shade of pink.

Throughout her life, Dorothy loved
people—especially children and babies, and all of God’s creations. She was
deeply caring and compassionate to those in need. Her devotion to others was
evident in every act of kindness, every word of encouragement, and every prayer
she offered. She loved her family fiercely and unconditionally. Her strong will
was both a guiding force and a source of inspiration. Her feisty spirit only
added charm to her character—leaving us with fond memories and many reasons to
smile.

During the many years Dorothy battled
Alzheimer’s disease, she still maintained a zest for life, and never lost
recognition of her life partner; her beloved “Papa”. To the very end of her
days on earth she continually reached for the comfort of his loving hand. Their
marriage, their friendship, and their devotion to one another is truly a
testament to God’s plan.

Cowan-Wynne, Winnie Perry; and brothers, William (Bub) Maples, and Lanny

Leon Edward “Lonnie” Arnold, 80, passed away on Aug. 29, 2024, surrounded by loved ones at his home in Great Bend. He was born on July 20, 1944, in Pendennis, Kansas, to Alfred Edward and Rosa Faye (Lacy) Arnold. On Nov. 20, 1974, he married Carolyn Cole in Great Bend.&nbsp;

A long time Great Bend resident, Lonnie held multiple careers prior to his retirement, from truck driving in the oil field, owning a gas station, and as a MHDD technician for Larned State Hospital. He was a religious man, who enjoyed spending time with his beloved family.&nbsp;

Survivors include daughter, Tracy Lea; three stepsons, Harry Thorne, IV, and wife Helen of Nekoma, Bryan L. Thorne and wife Genoveva of Beloit, and Troy Thorne and wife Danielle of Larned; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; beloved nieces, Vesta, Sonja, Elva and Tina; family friend, Donna Selle; numerous other loved ones; and cherished dogs, Toby and Sparky.&nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn; parents; two brothers, Alfred and Bobby Gene Arnold; and sister, Darlene Arnold.&nbsp;

Leon 'Lonnie' Arnold, age 80

Kevin C. Seyfert, 62, died September 2, 2024, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, Kansas. He was born October 18, 1961, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Kenneth and Norma (Courange) Seyfert. Kevin graduated from Hoisington High School in 1979 and later furthered his education in mechanics at NCK Tech in Beloit and auto body repair at Salina Area Vo-Tech.

On June 25, 2004, he married Rita Demel in Great Bend, Kansas. She survives.

A lifetime Hoisington resident, Kevin worked in the maintenance department for Superior Essex since 1996. He also worked part time at Old Dominion Freight Line. He was a member of the Barton County Fire District #2 of Hoisington, proudly serving his community for the last 39 years. He loved fast cars, trucks, loud music, and Original Coors. He will be missed by his family and many friends.

He is survived by his wife Rita Seyfert of the home; daughters, Shawna (Dennis) O’Claray of Yukon, Oklahoma, Angela Foltz (fiancé Aaron Ball) of Great Bend, Cassandra Caruthers (fiancé William Hodur) of Louisville, Kentucky, and Crystal Caruthers of Great Bend; mother, Norma Seyfert of Hoisington; sisters, Nancy (Mark) Crawford of Hoisington, and Kimberly (William) Lange of Wichita; honorary brother, LaVern Boxberger of Hoisington; many nieces and nephews, and his beloved 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth C. Seyfert.

Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m., Friday, September 6, 2024, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Ron Bailey presiding. Inurnment will follow in Hoisington City Cemetery.

Kevin graduated from Hoisington High School in 1979 and later furthered his education in mechanics at NCK Tech in Beloit and auto body repair at Salina Area Vo-Tech.On June 25, 2004, he married Rita Demel in Great Bend, Kansas. She survives.A lifetime Hoisington resident, Kevin worked in the maintenance department for Superior Essex since 1996. He also worked part time at Old Dominion Freight Line. He was a member of the Barton County Fire District #2 of Hoisington, proudly serving his community for the last 39 years. He loved fast cars, trucks, loud music, and Original Coors. He will be missed by his family and many friends.He is survived by his wife Rita Seyfert of the home; daughters, Shawna (Dennis) O’Claray of Yukon, Oklahoma, Angela Foltz (fiancé Aaron Ball) of Great Bend, Cassandra Caruthers (fiancé William Hodur) of Louisville, Kentucky, and Crystal Caruthers of Great Bend; mother, Norma Seyfert of Hoisington; sisters, Nancy (Mark) Crawford of Hoisington, and Kimberly (William) Lange of Wichita; honorary brother, LaVern Boxberger of Hoisington; many nieces and nephews, and his beloved 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth C. Seyfert.Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.Memorial service will be 10 a.m., Friday, September 6, 2024, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Ron Bailey presiding. Inurnment will follow in Hoisington City Cemetery.

James Sylvester Sauber, 95, passed away at Reflections Retirement Resort in Salina, KS on Sept. 1st, 2024. Born on July 5th, 1929 in Great Bend, KS to parents Peter Matt &amp; Frances (Hoffman) Sauber.&nbsp; 

A lifetime Rice and Barton County resident James graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1948 later marrying Marilyn Jean Ewy on July 16th, 1953 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellinwood. James worked in HVAC and plumbing for all of his working years in addition served in the National Guard for 6 years and Ellinwood Fire Dept. for 11 years. 

Memberships include St. Joseph Catholic Church, Arkansas River Muzzleloaders, Kansas Trappers Associations and Ellinwood Historical Society. James was an avid outdoorsman where he hunted birds, deer, and elk and also trapped bobcats. James cut firewood and even built a log cabin on the Arkansas River in addition to updating the home many times. Later in life he enjoyed going to estate sales and auctions to collect antiques.

Survivors include wife of over 71 years Marilyn (Ewy) Sauber; children, Michael (Diane) Sauber, Julie (Greg) Stephens, Robert (Christine) Sauber, Jackie (Bill) Klapper, Elaine (Ken) Martin, Andrew (Patty) Sauber, Keith Sauber; 17 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; sister in law, Bettie Sauber and many nieces and nephews. 

James was preceded in death by siblings, Margaret Huslig, Lawrence Sauber, Ambrose Sauber, Emanuel Sauber, and daughter in law Janet Sauber.

Funeral Mass will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellinwood, Sat., Sept. 7th at 10:30 AM with Fr. Terrance Klein officiating. Burial will follow at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery in Ellinwood, KS. Visitation will take place at Minnis Chapel on Fri., Sept. 6th from 1-5 PM and family will receive friends at St. Joseph Catholic Church from 5-7 PM prior to the parish Rosary/Vigil beginning at 7 PM.

James Sauber, age 95

Dorothy Yvonne “Dot” Vainer, 86,
passed away August 31, 2024, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. She was
born on December 18, 1937, in Phillipsburg, Kansas, to John and Levena
(Belveal) Pflieger. On November 5, 1957, she married James “Jim” Vainer at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salina, Kansas. 

Dot had been a resident of Great Bend
since 1971, coming from Concordia. She worked as a bookkeeper for over 50 years
alongside her husband in the glass industry, including for Quality Glass. Dot
was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish and Altar Society, and former member
of AMBUCS. She volunteered to work at polling places during elections. Dot
enjoyed spending time at the lake, boating and camping, and especially loved
spending time with her family.

Survivors include two sons, David
Vainer and wife Pam, and John Vainer and wife Lori, all of Great Bend;
daughter, Debbie Quinn and husband Jim of Dover, Delaware; seven grandchildren,
Jeremy, Matt, Megan, Kylie, Dalton, Katlin, and Aron; and eleven great
grandchildren, Jackson, Lincoln, Brooke, Olivia, Valerie, Blair, Isaac, Ethan,
Kennedie, Blaklie, and Oliver.

She is preceded in death by her
husband, Jim; parents; and two brothers, J.R. and Rich Pflieger.

Mass of Christian Burial will take
place at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 5, 2024, at St. Patrick Catholic
Church, with Father Prakash Kola presiding. Interment will follow at Great Bend
Cemetery North. Visitation will take place noon to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday,
September 4, 2024, with Altar Society Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and Vigil at 7:00
p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials have been designated to Prince of
