We’re excited to share that the USD 495 Board of Education has approved the promotion of Mr. Roni Ettleman as the next Principal of Larned High School, effective July 1, 2025.

Mr. Ettleman is currently serving as Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at LHS and will step into this new role following the departure of Mr. Dustin Wilson, who has accepted a position as Superintendent at Lebo-Waverly, USD 243.

“I’m excited for the opportunity and look forward to continuing to work with the great teachers and coaches at Larned High School in this new role,” Roni shared.

Superintendent Bryce Wachs said, “Roni has been a strong and consistent leader at LHS. He’s built great relationships with students and staff and has helped create a positive culture throughout the building. We’re excited to see him take this next step and continue moving LHS in the right direction.”

Before moving into administration, Roni spent 15 years teaching Business at Atchison Public Schools. He earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration and Economics from Fort Lewis College, followed by a Master’s in Education from the University of Phoenix and a Master’s in School Leadership from Benedictine College.

He and his wife, Amy, moved to Larned in 2019. They have three daughters—Ashton, Brittany, and Camryn—and two grandchildren, Kendry and Kollins.

We’re proud to have Roni stepping into this role and look forward to what’s ahead for LHS under his leadership.

With 2,000 eggs used at the PAWesome Easter Egg
Hunt for dogs and 10,000 eggs used for the Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt for
children, the Great Bend Recreation Commission was busy stuffing plastic eggs
with treats leading up to this past Saturday’s events.

Director Megan Hammeke said all of the staff helped put on the hunts.


"People that couldn't help the previous weekend, were able to help this weekend," said Hammeke. "People brought extra help. It was a Rec family event for sure. I think every one of us brought a family member to help or a friend."

Hammeke added the Barton Community College volleyball team helped stuff the eggs,
as did the high school’s Youth Crew. Rec Executive Director Chris Umphres said Hammeke
deserves a lot of credit for the popular egg hunts that had to be rescheduled
from the previous weekend due to weather.


"We all come out to help, but the organization behind the scenes is from Megan," said Umphres. "Vandy Simpson helps with the awards. Those two ladies do a heck of a job. It almost brought a tear to your eye when you had to cancel the day that had been planned, but I think that was still the right call. I don't think people would have been out there in the cold weather."

Approximately 400 children, between the ages of 3 and 12, participated in the
egg hunt at the Great Bend Sports Complex on Saturday.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Musk Thistle is usually a biennial or winter annual, but it will occasionally occur as a summer annual. As a biennial, it produces a rosette the first year and develops flowers and seeds the second year. As a summer annual, this thistle completes its life cycle from germination through seed production in the same growing season. Seedlings may emerge anytime during the growing season, but the plants usually remain in the rosette stage for about 90% of their life cycle.

Musk thistle usually begins flowering in May and may bloom from seven to nine weeks. Seed dispersal begins seven to ten days after a head begins to bloom and an average of 11,000 seeds can be produced per plant with around 5,000 of the seeds capable of germination.

Musk Thistle was declared a noxious week in Kansas in 1963. Kansas law requires all persons and organizations prevent its spread and eradicate it.

There are several different methods for controlling thistle. The first line of defense is proper grazing management. Invasion of thistle is slowed on grasslands that are properly stocked to maintain a good cover of competing vegetation. Burning does not control the thistle, but it makes control more effective. Burn according to your burn plan, and then spray 10-14 days after. For the most effective control, apply herbicides while the musk thistle is in the rosette stage and actively growing, usually early May. For fall, October 1st to soil freeze is an excellent time. During the fall, most musk thistles are in the rosette stage and are most susceptible to herbicides. Use herbicides when they are growing rapidly under good soil moisture and favorable air temperatures (70-90 degrees F). A 6-12 hours rain-free period after application at the recommended rate is adequate to allow herbicide absorption.

For control in pastures that have a scattered issue, you can remove them by hand. Dig the plant below the crow to prevent further development. Dig, remove the plant, and burn the flowers that are in late bud or bloom stage. Research shows that mowing is the most effective at full bloom, but must be repeated as necessary for effective control.

Career Expo in Great Bend Wednesday for job seekers 

Jan Karlin was a pioneer for Barton County in several ways. Karlin was
first hired by the Barton County Clerk’s Office in 1980 to prepare payroll. Karlin
was the very first person to operate a computer in the courthouse. 

Former
co-worker and current Barton County Commissioner Donna Zimmerman said Karlin was
elected as treasurer in 1986 where she served more than 20 years until her
retirement.


"There wasn't anything Jan couldn't do when she set her mind to it," said Zimmerman. "I'm betting there were very few people in her life that hadn't received a greeting card with a personal note at sometime of their life. Probably one of the things I admired the most about Jan was her desire to help anyone, regardless of their stature or position. She also never knew a stranger."

Karlin passed away April 4 at the age of 77. Members of Karlin’s
family were in attendance at Tuesday’s Barton County Commission meeting where
the board approved a proclamation honoring the life and career of Karlin, while
also naming April 15, 2025 as Jan Karlin Day.

Zimmerman noted Karlin made a big impact on her life personally and the county
as a whole with her innovative ways.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Crude prices are flirting with the break-even point. NYMEX crude for May delivery settled Friday at $61.50 per barrel. By lunchtime on Monday prices were lower, but still above $60, which many analysts say is the price point below which they lose money. London Brent was trading a few cents over $64 by midday Monday.

Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at $51.75 per barrel, after rising $1.50 on Friday.&nbsp; Current prices at CHS are down nearly ten dollars from the first of the month.

Another rupture and spill shut down the Keystone Pipeline, this time near Fort Ransom in southeastern North Dakota. Regulators reported a pipeline employee heard a "mechanical bang" on the morning of April 8, and saw oil emerging near a pumping station. The pipeline was shut down within about two minutes, and the spill was contained to a farm field. The pipeline was recently spun off to a firm called South Bow. The company's Web site indicates US and Canadian regulators have issued orders for corrective action. The accident segment will remain shut down until US pipeline regulators okay a restart. Pressure will be restricted, prior inspection results will be analyzed, and materials testing ordered, as investigators look into the root causes.

Keystone has now spilled heavy crude oil at least 22 times in ten years, and at least twice in every state in which it operates, six times in North Dakota, and at least four in Kansas including one in Washington County two years ago.

Crude production dipped slightly from a week ago to 13,458,000 barrels a day. The four week average is down three-and-a-half percent from a year ago. Cumulative production so far this year dips below 13.5 million.

The government reports commercial crude oil inventories jumped 2.6 million barrels to just over 442 million, or about five percent below the five year seasonal average.

New drilling permits in Kansas total 209 for the year, down from 240 last year. Regulators okayed ten last week with six in Western Kansas. Finney County adds two, raising them to 19 for the year. That's third statewide and tops in Western Kansas. Finney County has, in just two years, jumped from fourth to second statewide in crude production.

Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 8 new completions this week including one in Stafford County and three in Finney County.

The Kansas Rig Count is down one in Western Kansas at 14 rigs, and unchanged east of Wichita at eight active rigs. Drilling continued Friday on a lease in Barton County.

A new government report shows crude exports last year averaged 4.1 million daily barrels, beating the record set the year before.&nbsp; EIA notes export growth slowed to just one percent, from 14% in 2023, and 21% growth in 2022.The latest weekly export numbers are lower: 3.2 million barrels a day, down 16% from last week, but up more than half a million barrels year-over-year. Crude imports are down a quarter-million daily barrels from a week ago. Four week average imports drop seven percent.

Baker Hughes reported 583 active drilling rigs last week, noting a drop of nine rigs drilling for oil in the United States. That's the biggest drop in the oil-rig tally in two years. The gas-count was up one rig. Texas was down three rigs, California and Pennsylvania were each down two, and New Mexico was down one.

Independent Oil and Gas Service lists the top operators based on total footage drilled during the first three months of the year. In Western Kansas they are Merit Energy, Berexco, Murfin Drilling, American Warrior and Ritchie Exploration. East of Wichita that list includes R.J. Energy, Colt Energy, Darrah Oil, Birk Petroleum, and M.L.T. Energy.

The Kansas Independent Oil and Gas Association holds its mid-year meeting next week at the Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane.&nbsp; Meetings, speeches, mixers, and golf run Wednesday through Friday, April 23 through April 25. Drilling continued Friday on a lease in Barton County.A new government report shows crude exports last year averaged 4.1 million daily barrels, beating the record set the year before.&nbsp; EIA notes export growth slowed to just one percent, from 14% in 2023, and 21% growth in 2022.The latest weekly export numbers are lower: 3.2 million barrels a day, down 16% from last week, but up more than half a million barrels year-over-year. Crude imports are down a quarter-million daily barrels from a week ago. Four week average imports drop seven percent.Baker Hughes reported 583 active drilling rigs last week, noting a drop of nine rigs drilling for oil in the United States. That's the biggest drop in the oil-rig tally in two years. The gas-count was up one rig. In March, the Kansas State Board of Education voted to repeal a new
requirement that high school graduates must fill out a Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The Kansas Board of Regents still wanted to
promote FAFSA and did so with a statewide competition. 


Hoisington High School Principal Joel Mason said 66% of Hoisington
seniors have filled out the form, ranking them tied for first among all 3A
schools in Kansas.


"First of all, that's a great job by our seniors for being on top of things," said Mason. "It's also a great job by Hope Randolph (Family Support Worker at HHS), she drives that. I want to report that thanks to her efforts and our senior class we are tied for first place in 3A."

filled out by Hoisington students as of the end of March, more than doubling
the school’s number from a year ago.

Barton Community College hosted a signing ceremony April 3 with Pratt Community College (PCC) to reaffirm their commitment to providing Nursing education in Pratt and the surrounding area.

Barton President Dr. Marcus Garstecki and PCC President Dr. Michael Calvert gathered along with representatives from local and state government offices, the College’s Board of Trustees, administration, staff, and students to sign a continuing agreement for Barton to provide Nursing education in the Pratt area.

The partnership focuses on healthcare training and providing vital services to the region. Garstecki said supporting our local and regional healthcare facilities is essential for growth in rural areas.

“I believe there are three pillars to keeping rural communities growing and thriving: education, healthcare, and a strong workforce,” he said. “What I think is really exciting about this partnership is that it covers all three of those pillars.”

Calvert said that after PCC lost its program, the Board began searching for a partner so that the Pratt area could continue providing essential healthcare training. Barton was at the top of that list because of its program’s stellar reputation.

“What started as a small conversation has grown into a great example of friendship, collaboration, and partnership,” he said. “It meets a need that is not going away. It is a need that will continue to grow, and as partners, we will meet that need.”

Barton has provided Nursing education in Pratt since August 2022. At the start of the partnership, students could enroll in and complete coursework for their Associate Degree in Nursing to become a Registered Nurse (RN). A Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program was added in 2023. In 2024, the RN and LPN programs completed national certification with a 100% pass rate.

At the USD 428 Board of Education meeting in March, Assistant
Superintendent John Popp said a cost estimate to demolish the oldest sections
of the old Washington Elementary School building and renovate the remaining portion
would be $3.5 million. The Great Bend school board asked Popp to look into the
cost to simply demolish the older areas that were built in the early 1900s. 

At Monday’s
meeting, Popp said the bare minimum cost for demolition and adding a restroom
to the other side would be $1,047,145.


"I have had this feeling that our community, in the past, has said they want that building torn down," said Popp. "I'd like to honor that, but I also want to look at the reality of $1 million to tear a building down."

At the March meeting, USD 428 Superintendent Khris Thexton noted the district's capital outlay fund had just over $6 million.

The building, at the Washington Avenue and Lakin Avenue intersection, still
stands for the use of the Parent Teacher Resource Center (PTRC) and a pair of
district initiatives such as the R.I.S.E. program.


There are currently unused rooms at the Washington building that contain
lead-based paint, lead pipe and asbestos.


"There are a lot of thoughts about it not being safe for kids," said Popp. "It is absolutely safe for kids. Yes, there is asbestos and lead, but that is all contained and abated in the right way in order to be safe for kids. When you tear something down, you uncover all of the stuff that's covered up."

Board member Deanna Essmiller asked if there would be any public interest in
purchasing the property as is. The board took no action at Monday’s meeting,
but a tour of the building was suggested.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Candidates were selected for interviews based on their fit with desired characteristics that were developed with input from focus groups and an online community survey utilized during the search process.&nbsp;

McDonald is currently serving as the superintendent for USD 401 Chase Raymond in Chase, Kansas. She is in her fourth year in that position. Previously, McDonald served as Chase High School Principal and K-12 Curriculum Director for two years and as a coordinator for behavior and trauma informed services with Barton County Special Services.&nbsp;

The public is invited to a meet and greet with McDonald on Tuesday, April 15 in the Commons Area at Hoisington High School from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Barton County Commission meeting agenda (4/15)

On April 10, at about 7:30 p.m., a deputy with the Barton County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle in the 2600 block of Railroad Avenue, just south of Great Bend, for a traffic infraction. During the course the traffic stop, the deputy recognized Heather Holmes, age 42, in the vehicle. The Sheriff’s deputy was aware Holmes had active warrants for her arrest. Holmes was taken into custody without incident.

Sheriff’s Office K9 Menta and handler were called to the scene. The dog indicated the presence of controlled substances in the vehicle. Further investigation revealed methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

The backseat passenger was identified as Shawn Cundiff, age 48. Cundiff was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Cundiff and Holmes are both Larned residents.

Holmes and Cundiff were transported to the Barton County Jail without incident. Holmes was booked on warrants for contempt of court and parole violation as well as possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. She is being held on a $50,000 bond. Cundiff was booked on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia he has since posted a $10,000 bond and was released.

Larned residents arrested on drug charges near Great Bend

‘Best decision ever’ student responses on choosing Barton CC

Governor Laura Kelly announced Thursday 11 rural roadway projects will receive a total of $8.1 million in federal funds through the Kansas Department of Transportation’s High Risk Rural Roads (HRRR) Program. Ellsworth County and Stafford County were included in the projects.&nbsp;

“Made possible through the IKE Transportation Program, these projects address much needed upgrades of rural roadways,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“By improving intersections, signage, and other critical roadway features, we are building momentum for a safer, stronger Kansas.”&nbsp;

The HRRR program is federally funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program and is designed to improve the safety and efficiency of rural roads. An additional $1.6 million in local funds will be utilized for the selected projects. This year’s 11 HRRR projects were selected from 29 applications seeking $29.9 million in funds.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“With over 20% of fatal and serious injury crashes occurring on county roads, strong partnerships will be necessary to achieve the goal of zero roadway fatalities,”&nbsp;said Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed. “KDOT's collaboration with local governments through programs like HRRR benefits our communities and strengthens connections across the state.”&nbsp;

Projects in this program fall into one of two categories: Systemic (encompassing a local roadway network) or Site Specific. The county, category, amount awarded, county match, and brief description for the selected local projects are below:

Ellsworth County Awarded: $1,300,000 County match: $240,000 Brief description: Add aggregate shoulders on Avenue L, from K-156 to the west city limits of Kanopolis.

Stafford County Awarded: $500,000 County match: $50,000 Brief description:&nbsp;Add safety edge wedge to NW 30th Street from NW 70th Street to the west city limits of St. John.

In partnership with Women4Kansas, Barton Community College will welcome Miss Kansas 2024, Alexis Smith, as a special guest speaker at 7 p.m. April 17 in the Fine Arts Auditorium; the event is free and open to the public.

Smith is a graduate of Newman University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Her community service initiative, “Respect Reclaimed: Advocating for Healthy Relationships,” focuses on educating individuals about recognizing the signs of unhealthy and abusive relationships while promoting the values of respect, consent, and emotional wellness. As a spokesperson for the National Domestic Violence Hotline and a content provider for the One Love Foundation, Smith’s mission is to raise awareness and end intimate partner violence through education and empowerment.

Barton Title IX Coordinator Cheryl Brown said Smith brings a powerful message about dating violence and healthy relationships.

“We are honored to host Alexis and to provide our students and community members the opportunity to hear from someone who exemplifies leadership, compassion, and the power of using one’s voice for good,” she said. “The impact she is making throughout Kansas is inspiring.”

Smith currently serves as a cardiothoracic intensive care nurse and travels throughout the state, working with the Kansas Department of Wildlife &amp; Parks, the Kansas Department of Transportation, Lead for America, and the Wichita Family Crisis Center. Her viral on-stage response at the 2024 Miss Kansas competition propelled her into the national spotlight, earning an appearance on Good Morning America and articles in The New York Times and People Magazine, and her story was shared by many other major media outlets nationwide.
