The Great Bend Co-op received their first load from this year’s wheat
harvest Tuesday at the elevators in Ellinwood. Great Bend Co-op Chief
Operations Officer Jeff Mauler said he expects numbers to steadily increase
over the next few days. 

The wheat received in the early going was most likely
more stressed, hindering the plant’s fullest potential. Based on preliminary
numbers, Mauler estimates the harvest will be average, to slightly below average. 
"The quality of grain coming in right now is very good," said Mauler. "We're right around that 60 pounds per bushel to above test weight. The moisture has been anywhere from 9% to upwards of 12 or 13." 
Mauler expects yields to be higher and better quality from the northern part of
Barton County as that area received more rain. 
The next few weeks are one of the busiest times on the farm, and the Great
Bend Co-op encourages communities to be patient and cautious. 
"These farmers are trying to get their crop in," said Mauler. "They get two chances, now and in the fall, to make a living. Be patient with our farmers because they're trying to do the best they can to get out of your way and not slow everyone down. They're trying to do it in safe, quick fashion."

Northern Barton Co. with slight edge in wheat quality, yields

A trio of updates from K-State Agronomy provides guidance for producers as they begin to harvest this year’s wheat crop and plan for post-harvest treatments and crop rotations. Considerations when harvesting short wheat.

Drought conditions have resulted in thinner stands and shorter wheat plants in fields across the state, both of which present challenges for combining the wheat crop. 

According to an Agronomy eUpdate on May 26, “In short wheat, getting the heads into the combine with less straw will be a challenge. In some cases, the reel may not be able to effectively convey the wheat back from the cutter bar to the auger, nor hold it in place during cutting.”

In the guidance, Lucas Haag, northwest area crops and soil scientist, and Ajay Sharda, extension biological and agricultural engineer, addressed how producers can address these combining issues. Using draper headers or flex heads can help deal with lower cutting heights and potential ground strikes. Operators can also make adjustments to conventional headers to address issues with thin wheat stands. No matter the header, operators can also adjust machinery operations — following the manufacturer’s recommendations — including concave/rotor cage clearance, cylinder/rotor speed and fan speed.

Double cropping options after wheat For fields that did receive enough soil moisture, K-State also issued guidance for double cropping considerations after harvest. Wheat Scoop: K-State issues combine adjustment 

Although Barton Community College will be moving past federal assistance through COVID-19 pandemic funds, the Great Bend college expects to see a significant boost in state aid for the fiscal year 2023 budget. Despite an increase in revenue, Barton is anticipating a $943,000 deficit for the upcoming fiscal year. Barton President Dr. Carl Heilman anticipated the negative number to drop as more numbers become official during the budget process. "The first time we shared this draft, I think we were like $1.9 million in red," said Heilman. "We stated at that time, that was a very preliminary figure and it would decrease. We see in the second draft, it has decreased. With the next draft, it will decrease further." The preliminary deficit was more than $1.8 million when calculations were presented this past April, and now it is under $1 million. Barton has been underfunded since the development of the State Funding Formula in 2012. Barton Vice President of Administration Mark Dean expects an additional $2 million in state aid compared to a year ago. "We've been owed this since 2012," said Dean. "Because the State of Kansas has a lot of money right now, they are going to cover the gap for all the community colleges and tech colleges. We'll see additional money this next year." Nearly $19 million of Barton’s expenses are directed to salaries in fiscal year 2023. That figure includes an estimated five-percent wage change which has not been approved yet.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

As of May 25, Barton had 66 vacant positions they are attempting to fill.

"The first time we shared this draft, I think we were like $1.9 million in red," said Heilman. "We stated at that time, that was a very preliminary figure and it would decrease. We see in the second draft, it has decreased. With the next draft, it will decrease further." The preliminary deficit was more than $1.8 million when calculations were presented this past April, and now it is under $1 million. Barton has been underfunded since the development of the State Funding Formula in 2012. Barton Vice President of Administration Mark Dean expects an additional $2 million in state aid compared to a year ago. "We've been owed this since 2012," said Dean. "Because the State of Kansas has a lot of money right now, they are going to cover the gap for all the community colleges and tech colleges. We'll see additional money this next year." Nearly $19 million of Barton’s expenses are directed to salaries in fiscal year 2023. That figure includes an estimated five-percent wage change which has not been approved yet.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;As of May 25, Barton had 66 vacant positions they are attempting to fill.

November 15, 2021 is a day Jefferson Davis will never forget. That afternoon, Davis and a friend were cruising the highways of northern Barton County on motorcycles when Davis lost control of his bike and crashed into a ditch. The off-duty Great Bend Police Department sergeant suffered two skull fractures, a broken neck, broken ribs down his entire left side, a broken shoulder, ruptured spleen, and bleeding in the brain.

But this is a happy story. A month ago, in early May, Davis returned full-time to his job with the GBPD. He has been overwhelmed by the community's response after the accident.

"It's hard for me to put it into words, but it really made me appreciate and love this community that much more," he said. "That show of support was just amazing. It just inspires me to give back to my community more than I ever did."

Because of his injuries, Davis does not recall a whole lot about the moments just before and after his accident.  He can remember looking down at one of his foot pegs because it felt wrong.

"I remember thinking when I get home, I'm going to loosen it and adjust it and get it fixed," he said. "I think that was my mistake. By the time I looked up we were coming up on a curve. I attempted to slow down so I could navigate the road. I got on my front brake pretty hard, which I know better, but at the time you don't think about that. I think I was on that front brake a little too hard. I went to shift the bike with my body weight to move it. It locked up and rolled and sent me flying."

Coming around the curve, Davis's friend had braked. Davis was wearing amber-colored lenses at the time, and law enforcement has suggested that may have been a contributing factor in the accident. 

"I don't know if that's exactly what led to the accident, but it could very well have been a circumstance towards it," Davis said. "I've told people, stay away from the amber color. It does kind of hide the shade of brake lights and you don't see it."

Hoisington EMS was dispatched to the accident. Davis never lost consciousness after the crash, but he is forever grateful for the fast response of Hoisington's crew.

"If I was going to hat-tip anybody, Hoisington EMS did a great job," he said. "I was confused, I was scared, I was in a lot of places at that time. I recognized one of them, and she kind of reminded me I know her. It just brought me some feeling of security. They really did a good job of treating me and getting me to the hospital. They stayed there at the hospital while I was being diagnosed."

That move paid off. In addition to the broken bones, a scan revealed two brain bleeds inside the skull.  The same Hoisington EMS team was able to rush Davis to a hospital in Wichita. Fortunately, Davis's Traumautic Brain Injury rated as the least severe on a 15-point scale.

"I've since found the EMTs who responded and I can't thank them enough," said Davis. "Every time I see them I just smile and tell them I owe them. I can never repay it but I owe them. I love those guys. They did me a solid, for sure."

Davis was released from the hospital five days after the accident. A day later, a home-health nurse arrived for additional care. After asking about his pain level and going through some movement tests, she suggested he visit the emergency room for another check. 

"I credit her for keeping me healthy, too," Davis said. "She said I should probably go to the ER and get checked out again. They scanned and ended up finding several smaller brain bleeds. That's when I got to take a helicopter ride back to Wichita."

This hospital stint lasted four days. Davis wore a neck brace for approximately six weeks upon returning home the second time, and began physical therapy at Catalyst Sports Therapy and Rehab in Great Bend.

"That was my first time with physical therapy and I didn't know what to expect," he said. "That is an amazing process. I was able to heal up and get movement back. I'm probably stronger now than I was before the accident."

Davis had little time to notice the community response after the first hospital stay. It became quite evident once he was back for good.

"When I got back the second time, my wife started telling me about all the community support," he said. "I was absolutely overwhelmed. My first question was 'Why, why?' She said, 'Believe it or not, people like you.'"

Davis first noticed a railing that had been added to his front porch so he could get into his home. Wally Eldridge had stopped by to install it. When Jefferson's brother tried to pay for the services, Eldridge refused to accept.

The Brothers in Blue Motorcycle Club held a fundraiser and requested an appearance from Davis. He was only able to make a quick stop but it made a huge impact on his recovery as he received encouragement from friends and strangers.

"It was a little overwhelming to me," he said. "It inspired me to get better. I told myself when I get better, I'm going to give everything I have and more to the community. When I needed help, it was there."

Many in the community lent a hand. The local Fraternal Order of Police, American Legion, and Great Bend Fire Department Social and Charity Fund all helped with moral and financial support. 

Life is slowly returning to normal for Davis. Given his injuries, he was unsure about the future of his position with the GBPD. A police officer since 2003, Davis's dreams of returning full-time came to fruition in May. 

And then there are motorcycles. Davis owned two motorcycles at the time of the crash. His riding days are not as long as they used to be, but he's back on the bike.

"I investigate accidents," he said. "Looking at my own accident and understanding it better afterward, I realize there was a very strong possibility I could have been a fatality. But I was given a second chance. I debated about riding again and, at the end of the day, I'm still me. I still love motorcycles. I've always enjoyed riding and, in my case, fixing motorcycles. I still wanted to be myself."

Davis was not wearing a helmet at the time of his accident. That's a mistake he's vowed to never make again.

"I promised my wife I'd wear a helmet," he said. "I've owned a helmet and used to wear it before the accident hit or miss. I wear it every time now. I realize how much a helmet can help when we're talking potential accidents and potential injury. If I could go back in time, on Nov. 15, I really wish I'd had my helmet. That would have prevented a lot of the brain injuries. We learn lessons in life, and I guess that was one I had to learn the hard way."

Friday's weather

Disturbing images emerged out of the southwest corner of Kansas earlier this week as several thousand head of cattle died, reportedly due to extreme weather conditions. Ranchers are not required to report the dead cattle, so estimates of the carcasses range from 2,000 all the way up to 10,000.

Temperatures had been relatively mild around the state until June 11, when the thermometer began climbing towards the century mark. Not only did it remain there for several days, but warm evenings and humid conditions provided little reprieve for the animals.

"It's a unique combination of the temperature, the humidity, the wind, and also solar radiation, meaning cloud cover," said Brandon Depenbusch, vice president of cattle operations at Innovative Livestock Services. "If you get all three of those in the wrong combination, it's hard on people. We can only imagine how hard it is on animals out in nature.

"This year, in that particular part of the state, they had just a bad combination of high humidity, high temperature, no cloud cover, and very little wind. It resulted in a pretty tragic scenario."

ILS has feed yards throughout Central Kansas and Nebraska, and Depenbusch said animal safety strategies vary per location. However, there are some common ways to protect the animals during times of high heat.

"We have actual sprinklers within the pens," Depenbusch said of some yards. "We can turn them on and sprinkle the cattle and get them a little wet. Most importantly, we get the soil wet, which cools it down a little bit.

"Another is we'll deploy some bedding, so wheat straw or corn stalks to put on the pen surface. It's amazing what that does. People say that doesn't make much sense, but if you take a temperature gun and shoot it at the bare ground, it could be 30-40 degrees hotter than on the bedding. We'll roll out the bedding so they can lay on it or stand on it. It basically minimizes the solar radiation that bounces back off the ground."

Something as simple as providing shade for the animals can make a big impact, and some yards utilize mobile water trucks to hose down the animals. 

"The main thing is you want to make sure you have plenty of clean water for the animals," Depenbusch said. "With all those intervention strategies, when the conditions get so bad, it's just really tough on man and beast."

There are obvious financial losses with so many head of cattle dying unexpectedly, but Depenbusch said the pain goes beyond money. 

"My heart breaks for those guys and gals out there," he said. "As the livestock industry, we're caregivers. Our team wakes up every day to go to work to take care of animals. When you have a tragic event like this, it just really tears on peoples' emotions."

While this week's loss is uncharacteristic for the industry, Depenbusch said it should not carry over into grocery store and restaurant prices.

"It's such a small, localized event," he said. "It is horrendous to see, it is tragic to see, it's unbelievable to see, but it is a small portion of the overall industry. Overall price at the grocery store or at the restaurant, you will not see a difference because of this incident. For the people who own the animals, it's very costly and detrimental, and a very sad event for them."

Ranchers are not required to report the dead cattle, so estimates of the carcasses range from 2,000 all the way up to 10,000.Temperatures had been relatively mild around the state until June 11, when the thermometer began climbing towards the century mark. Not only did it remain there for several days, but warm evenings and humid conditions provided little reprieve for the animals."It's a unique combination of the temperature, the humidity, the wind, and also solar radiation, meaning cloud cover," said Brandon Depenbusch, vice president of cattle operations at Innovative Livestock Services. "If you get all three of those in the wrong combination, it's hard on people. We can only imagine how hard it is on animals out in nature."This year, in that particular part of the state, they had just a bad combination of high humidity, high temperature, no cloud cover, and very little wind. It resulted in a pretty tragic scenario."ILS has feed yards throughout Central Kansas and Nebraska, and Depenbusch said animal safety strategies vary per location. However, there are some common ways to protect the animals during times of high heat."We have actual sprinklers within the pens," Depenbusch said of some yards. "We can turn them on and sprinkle the cattle and get them a little wet. Most importantly, we get the soil wet, which cools it down a little bit."Another is we'll deploy some bedding, so wheat straw or corn stalks to put on the pen surface. It's amazing what that does. People say that doesn't make much sense, but if you take a temperature gun and shoot it at the bare ground, it could be 30-40 degrees hotter than on the bedding. We'll roll out the bedding so they can lay on it or stand on it. It basically minimizes the solar radiation that bounces back off the ground."Something as simple as providing shade for the animals can make a big impact, and some yards utilize mobile water trucks to hose down the animals. "The main thing is you want to make sure you have plenty of clean water for the animals," Depenbusch said. "With all those intervention strategies, when the conditions get so bad, it's just really tough on man and beast."There are obvious financial losses with so many head of cattle dying unexpectedly, but Depenbusch said the pain goes beyond money. "My heart breaks for those guys and gals out there," he said. "As the livestock industry, we're caregivers. Our team wakes up every day to go to work to take care of animals. When you have a tragic event like this, it just really tears on peoples' emotions."While this week's loss is uncharacteristic for the industry, Depenbusch said it should not carry over into grocery store and restaurant prices."It's such a small, localized event," he said. "It is horrendous to see, it is tragic to see, it's unbelievable to see, but it is a small portion of the overall industry. Overall price at the grocery store or at the restaurant, you will not see a difference because of this incident. For the people who own the animals, it's very costly and detrimental, and a very sad event for them."

Studying Earth's core samples with Kansas Wetlands Education Center

On Wednesday, June 8, at approximately 4:15 p.m., officers with the
Great Bend Police Department received a report of a sex offense involving a juvenile
female occurring at a residence located in Great Bend. 
As officers and detectives began compiling additional details of the report, it
was learned that multiple sex offenses were alleged to have occurred at the
Great Bend residence involving a 32-year-old male and juvenile female. 
During the course of this investigation, detailed information and evidence was
compiled and multiple interviews were conducted which resulted in the probable
cause and arrest of suspect, Dustin Bosack. 
On Tuesday, June 14, Bosack was arrested without incident and transported to
the Barton County Detention Center where he was booked on charges of aggravated
indecent liberties with a Child, and confined in lieu of bond. 
This investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with any information in reference

Man arrested for charges of sex offense in Great Bend

The Office of the Kansas Securities Commissioner, a division of the Kansas Insurance Department, today announced a continuation of its moratorium on securities act fees for state fiscal year 2023, beginning July 1, 2022. Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt first announced a moratorium on securities act fees in fiscal year 2022.

In the past, millions of dollars paid to the state’s securities act fee fund by investment advisers, broker-dealer firms, and others in the industry were swept into the State General Fund. During the 2022 Legislative session, the Legislature made permanent last year’s temporary suspension of this sweep by repealing the statute that provided for the transfer of funds.

“Government should not charge fees for the sake of charging fees,” Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt said. “I am determined to better align securities fees with actual costs and make Kansas a more attractive place to do business.”

The Department’s decision to continue its moratorium on fees, otherwise due under the Kansas Uniform Securities Act, will save fee-payers approximately $16 million on top of the $16 million saved during fiscal year 2022. 

The Department’s analysis of the fee structure under the Act is in advanced stages and in future fiscal years, there will be a gradual introduction of a new fee structure closely aligned with the costs and demands of regulating the securities industry.

“The continuation of this moratorium will assist staff in determining the appropriate size and cost of securities regulation in Kansas,” Securities Commissioner Dan Klucas said. “Next year, we expect to lower fees while still effectively regulating the securities industry, fostering capital formation, educating investors, and advocating on behalf of victims.”

Barton’s well-established OSHA program will make its way to Barton County from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 19-20 in the Fine Arts Building, room F-30.

This training program provides general awareness for entry-level construction workers and covers recognizing and preventing hazards on a construction site. The cost is $275 and includes two-day training, printed materials, snacks and lunch. At the conclusion of training, participants will take the exam and, upon receiving a passing grade, receive an OSHA 10 card. The class will be led by Instructor and Director of Barton’s OSHA Training Institute Education Center Lawrence Weber and will cover fall protection, bloodborne pathogens, hazardous materials, walking and working surfaces, exit routes, emergency action plans, fire prevention plans and protection, electrical, personal protective equipment and hazard communication.

Barton’s Hazardous Materials &amp; Emergency Services Training Institute (HMESTI) opened in 2008 and provides business, industry and governmental entities with environmental, health and safety training services. The Institute is an OSHA Training Institute Education Center and is a member of the Great Plains OSHA Education Center (GPOEC) Region VII and began providing OSHA training in 2012.

Barton Community College to host two-day OSHA training

While creating a city-wide cleanup was the top vote getter in a survey for
“quality of life” projects in Great Bend, building a large splash pad was a
close second. A water splash pad exists on the south side of the Barton County
Courthouse, but over 1,000 citizens voted that they would like to see a featured
splash pad. 
The Great Bend “quality of life” sales tax committee, formed to make
recommendations on how the .15% quality of life sales tax collections are spent,
determined they would start saving funds over the next three years to build a
splash pad that could cost approximately $200,000. 
Sales tax committee member Jacquie Disque imagined the splash pad would be
placed at Veterans Memorial Park. "In my mind the location should be Vet's Park," said Disque. "I know people, including childcare providers, take their kids to Ellinwood and Larned to use the splash pads." 
While money is saved for the splash pad over time, the committee is considering
projects to be completed sooner such as a basketball court and pickleball
courts at Brit Spaugh Park, climbing wall and stocking lakes with more fish.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Raging rivers at Yellowstone, drought conditions in the southwest. Water levels around the nation, quite literally, have experienced their share of ups and downs in recent months. Wilson Lake, however, is doing just fine at just six inches high as of Wednesday morning.

"We did our normal drawdown for half a foot during the winter months, but ever since the spring, we've been holding at conservation or a little bit high," said Park Ranger Trustin Kreft. "We haven't been low at all this year."

Strong storms hit Manhattan last week, causing some closures at Tuttle Creek State Park. Kanopolis Lake is currently sitting at conservation levels. With hot and dry conditions expected around the state this week and into next,  conditions should remain ideal at area lakes. 

"Most of the time when the lake elevation starts to rise, we'll start to see some closures of camping areas," Kreft said. "As we go up more and more we'll close. It just depends on high we get and for how long. Right now everything is open out here."

The new bathroom and shower facility at Switchgrass is in place but utilities have not been connected at this time.

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (6-15)

Like many industries, Case New Holland (CNH) is feeling the pinch of a
lack of a workforce at their dealerships for farm equipment mechanics. CNH
approached Barton Community College in Great Bend to begin a Top Tech program
that would train students that could be hired by their dealerships. 

Barton
Executive Director of Workforce Training Mary Foley said the college wants to
construct a new building to host the CNH program and house other existing
programs. 
"The new facility would allow us to move our CDL program," said Foley. "The CDL testing site would move there so we can get that off the Kirkman Center parking lot. It would have three classrooms and two offices. It would allow room for agriculture lab work and corrals for animals." 
Barton already offers a program that trains technicians who are currently
employed with a CNH dealership and need continuing education. The new program
would provide CNH with new technicians that have CNH Level 1 training and basic
farm machinery repair skills. 
The new facility would be located on the east side of campus, just behind
Community Christian Church.

Barton estimates the facility will cost $3.6
million. The Kansas Board of Regents has offered the college a $1.8 million
grant, but requires a local match. Barton Foundation Executive Director Lindsey
Bogner is working to secure the remaining funds through donations and tax
credits. 
"The state has designated $5 million in tax credits for all the community colleges," said Bogner. "Anyone that donates to a community college through 2025 is eligible for a 60% credit up to $500,000 per school. We have the opportunity to generate $833,000 for this project with donors." 
The program will need a facility large enough to hold one piece of CNH
equipment and a classroom for 14 students. The program would be taught over the
course of two semesters. Barton hopes to start the program in the fall of 2023.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

approached Barton Community College in Great Bend to begin a Top Tech program
that would train students that could be hired by their dealerships. Barton
Executive Director of Workforce Training Mary Foley said the college wants to
construct a new building to host the CNH program and house other existing
programs. 
"The new facility would allow us to move our CDL program," said Foley. "The CDL testing site would move there so we can get that off the Kirkman Center parking lot. It would have three classrooms and two offices. It would allow room for agriculture lab work and corrals for animals." 
Barton already offers a program that trains technicians who are currently
employed with a CNH dealership and need continuing education. The new program
would provide CNH with new technicians that have CNH Level 1 training and basic
farm machinery repair skills. 
The new facility would be located on the east side of campus, just behind
Community Christian Church. Barton estimates the facility will cost $3.6
million. The Kansas Board of Regents has offered the college a $1.8 million
grant, but requires a local match. Barton Foundation Executive Director Lindsey
Bogner is working to secure the remaining funds through donations and tax
credits. 
"The state has designated $5 million in tax credits for all the community colleges," said Bogner. "Anyone that donates to a community college through 2025 is eligible for a 60% credit up to $500,000 per school. We have the opportunity to generate $833,000 for this project with donors." 
The program will need a facility large enough to hold one piece of CNH
equipment and a classroom for 14 students. The program would be taught over the
course of two semesters. Barton hopes to start the program in the fall of 2023.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Growers across the southern tier of Kansas are off and cutting. Early indications continue to show lower than average yields, as expected. Spots of good quality, however, are a welcome surprise following last-minute rains that filled smaller and fewer wheat berries.

Loads are coming in today at all locations of Alliance Ag &amp; Grain LLC, according to Spearville-based grain merchandiser Sam Rucker. Producers started cutting on Saturday in Ford County. Results are variable, with moisture ranging from 10 to 14 percent and test weights running from 55 to 62 pounds per bushel. The wheat is dry, and combines are ready to roll in Pratt and Stafford counties, but some operations are waiting for harvest crews delayed in Oklahoma. Harvest did start in the area on Monday, and Kanza Coop Association has taken in about 100,000 bushels, according to Jim Lewton, grains operation.

Lewton expects yields to be down substantially, but moisture is dry and test weights are in the upper 50s to low 60s. Protein levels will likely be adequate due to the drought stress.

“We got some rains in May, too late to make any bushels, but improved the quality of the bushels we did have,” Lewton said.

Harvest also started on Monday in southeastern Kansas, but Beachner Grain Inc. in Independence has only taken in 12 loads thus far, according to location manager Todd Fienen. In contrast to much of the state, the area had a pretty good growing season, starting a little dry but receiving moisture when the wheat crop needed it, especially for the last month or so.

“Everything from 4th of May until last week has just been saturated,” Fienen said. “But it’s finally drying out.”

Fienen reported the limited wheat coming into the Montgomery County location has heavy weight — anywhere from 59 to 62 pounds per bushel — is good and dry — moisture ranging from 11 to 13 percent — and in good condition. With lots of green wheat still out there, he expects producers to be cutting until the Fourth of July.

Day 2, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

Life is finally returning to normal after the COVID-19 battle. For Great Bend High School A Cappella students, that means a trip to Washington, D.C. next spring. GBHS Vocal Director Susan Stambaugh presented a proposal to the board of education at Monday's meeting, and the board approved 7-0 the first trip to D.C. in four years.

"As you know, in the past we've been able to go to Washington, D.C. every other year with our junior and senior choir," Stambaugh said. "Through that, we've given the opportunity for a lot of parents and students to have an educational experience and also a singing experience." 

In the past, junior and senior A Cappella students made the bi-annual trip to D.C. The last trip was skipped due to COVID, and going forward, the trip will be every three years as A Cappella now includes sophomore students.

Board member Chad Burroughs once benefitted from a similar trip, and he led the charge to approve this year's trip during Spring Break next March."I participated in both band and choir travel trips when I was in school back a long time ago," he said. "It's a great thing. I still talk about it every once in a while. I'd like to make a motion to approve the choir trip for 2022-23."This year's trip is expected to cost each student approximately $1,600, and that figure covers all travel and meal costs. This year's group has the benefit of only one year of fundraising, which will be accomplished by community-driven rent-a-student. The only cost to the district comes with the bus ride to Kansas City."I'm telling you, I'm just so impressed with the community already," Stambaugh said. "They've been reaching out and every day I'm trying to coordinate things. Hopefully, that's a place where the community can receive some help with young, strong backs and kids who are ready to fundraise, and then they come along as sponsors." Stambaugh accomplishes several historical and patriotic goals on the D.C. trips, which include tours of the White House and other monuments.
