The curb and gutter repair project on 10th
Street in Great Bend gets underway Monday, Aug. 15. Based on their condition, several
areas will be improved from Kiowa Road to Harrison Street. 
 
Great Bend Public Works Director Jason Cauley said approximately 3,000 linear
feet of curb and gutter will be repaired. 
 
"There will be a minimal amount of sidewalk repaired too," said Cauley. "Sidewalk that is so bad that it could prohibit us from doing the curb and gutter. It will be sections of curb and gutter that we deemed necessary to be replaced." 
 
Once started, the project is expected to take approximately 60 days for the
completion depending on weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Cauley added L&amp;M Contractors will occupy
the outside lane during the repairs. 
 
"We're thinking that as the contractor progresses, it will just be sections they occupy," said Cauley. "It won't be everything from Kiowa to Harrison closed. It will just be that section of lane as they work on that section of curb and gutter." 
 
L&amp;M’s approved bid for the project was $147,425. Great Bend
transferred funds the last two years for curb and gutter improvements.

Great Bend man dead, 2 hospitalized after UTV strikes a tree

PAWNEE COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 12:30a.m. Sunday in Pawnee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Honda Accord driven by 55-year-old Laughn M.&nbsp;Seltmann of La Crosse, was southbound on U.S. 183 six miles southwest of Garfield.

The driver failed to stop at a stop sign. The Honda traveled across U.S. 56 into the ditch, through a barbed wire fence, rolled and came to rest in a milo field south of U. S. 56.

EMS transported&nbsp;Seltmann to the hospital in Kinsley. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas man hospitalized after car rolls into milo field

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, announced a new partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) and Chamber of Commerce Executives of Kansas (CCEKS) earlier this year. This partnership stitches together 53 local Chambers of Commerce across Kansas to offer an Association Health Plan entitled Chamber Blue of Kansas.

Chamber Blue of Kansas is an association health plan (AHP) that allows for employers to join together to purchase insurance. The larger pool of people enrolled in the plan allows the possibility for more plan options, and potentially, lower cost.

The initial rates will be based upon employers who complete an interest survey; completing the survey does not obligate your organization to enroll in the program but it does provide access to the initial group. The survey is live currently with a deadline of Aug. 18, 2022, for all interested parties to submit.

In the three weeks since the survey link went live in the Great Bend area alone there has been 91 organizations representing 899 employees complete the survey and at the state level, there has been over 1,300 organizations complete the survey representing approximately 20,000 employees! The response has been phenomenal and is poised to be one of the largest association health plans in Kansas. This is the best opportunity and lowest barrier of entry for small employers to access large group health insurance.

The initial rates will be determined in September 2022 based on groups/businesses that have completed the survey and plans will become effective Jan. 1, 2023.

Great Bend area business owners, non-profits, and organizations are encouraged to reach out to participating chambers within Barton County: Great Bend, Ellinwood, and Hoisington Chambers of Commerce. Chamber Blue of Kansas to transform health insurance for small business

As I’m entering my third week as the Family and Community Wellness (FCW) Agent, the most frequent question I have gotten so far is, “What do you do?” That is a great question! I’m not sure after only three weeks I’m qualified to answer that question but I will do my best.

The main goal of any extension agent is to bring quality, research-based information to the people of Kansas and the districts or counties that we serve. Typically, there are a handful of agents in a district or county that are ready to answer questions and provide programming on a wide variety of topics; from plants and animals to bugs, nutrition, and healthy living. I’m excited to learn more as I network with other FCW agents at Agent update in Manhattan in a couple of weeks.

The area that I will provide education and information is family and community wellness. Family and Community Wellness Agents develop and deliver educational programs to build healthy, sustainable communities, families, and individuals. Programming may include, but is not limited to, strengthening families and individuals; building community capacity; family and community health and wellness; and local volunteer development. That is a lot! Those are large and encompassing descriptions and maybe need some clarification. They are broad for a reason so that agents can tailor the needs to the community they serve.

I see my job as building relationships with the people in Ellis and Barton County. Currently, as I figure out what our community needs, I have mostly been asking a lot of questions and finding out what people want to learn more about. What is important to them? What are ways they can be healthy both mentally and physically and also financially? I have experience, education, and resources to help with all these areas. One of the main topics that has surfaced already is in the area of nutrition. Families are busy! Many families struggle to meet nutritional needs of their families in a quick, easy, economical but yet healthy way. Not only are families busy, but prices are rising, so finding meals that fit in the budget is important. Eating out is expensive and often times it is difficult to find healthy choices.

One thing for sure is I love answering questions. There are no dumb questions. I know it is easy to find information on the internet but sometimes it is nice to talk to someone who can tailor the information to your specific needs. The recent vaccine-related survey at Pawnee Valley Medical Associates (PVMA), Larned, indicated the family-medicine clinic had zero deficiencies, reported Jewel Davis, clinic office manager.

The Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment (KDHE) conducted its on-site Vaccines for Children (VFC) survey July 21. During their time at the clinic, surveyors conducted a random chart review, and evaluated daily operations, screening/documentation, procedures, reporting and the clinic environment.

“We are truly gratified by the no-deficiencies report from KDHE,” Davis said. “This is just one more example of how PVMA continues to put our patients and community first.

“All of us strive to provide the best standard of care by meeting patients’ expectations in a considerate and respectful manner. Our staff routinely receives up-to-date training on policies and procedures, while always striving to provide the highest quality of care possible at our clinic.”

VFC is a federally funded program that provides vaccinations to children who may not otherwise have access to them. KDHE manages the program and distributes the vaccines to participating clinics. Eligible children receive all vaccines at no cost.

The patient must be 18 years old or younger, and either qualify for Medicaid, be uninsured or underinsured, or be an American Indian or Alaska Native.

Larned’s PVMA passes vaccine survey with no deficiencies

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. The guaranteed maximum price for a new police station in Great Bend will
be revealed Monday, Aug. 15 at the Great Bend City Council meeting. 
In May, the City of Great Bend found out inflation expenses drove up the
construction cost to more than $9.1 million. That was an increase of more than
a million dollars from the projected cost in February. 
The bid deadline was Aug. 8. City staff met with McCownGordon Construction this past Thursday for a final review and to determine a recommendation.

According to documents, the guaranteed maximum price to be presented to the city council will be $7,790,591. Additional costs of architect designs, equipment and electrical will put the total project cost at $8,883,273. 
The 20,100 square-foot police station will be constructed at the 12th Street and Baker Avenue intersection to replace the station on Williams Street that was built
in 1938. 
Preliminary estimates last September had the project costing $5.8 million and
by May the number climbed over $9 million. 
Citizens voted in favor a .10% sales tax increase to go toward bond debt for
the new police station. The city anticipates more than $5.6 million form the
bond proceeds over the 20-year sunset. The city will find savings and transfers to make up
the difference.

McCownGordon anticipates having the construction complete by mid-September of 2023. 
The new maximum price for the police will be officially announced at the meeting beginning at
6:30 p.m. at City Hall.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

New Great Bend police station max price reveal on Monday

Eagle Radio’s “Blazin’
Hot Summer Giveaway” lived up to its name Friday evening in Hoisington. The 123
finalists for the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer endured a typical August evening and temperatures
flirting with the century mark outside of Ehler Chevrolet. Ellinwood’s Seth
Schartz had the lucky No. 30 ball for the win.

Schartz said he
never expected to win. “Not in my life,” he said. “I’ve done this a thousand
times. My wife is the one that always told me you’ve got to stop by and you’ve
got to do it. I think my mom helped me out.”

Seth’s mother,
Rhea, passed away in January. She did not give him the lucky Mega Millions
numbers for the big jackpot in July, but he said she was with him Friday night.

&nbsp;“She didn’t let me win the billion dollar
lotto so I was praying for this,” he said. “So it’s been a dream come true.”

A city of
Ellinwood employee, Schartz often stopped by RMAC’s Truck and Equipment. He
guesses he registered nine times there, ultimately becoming one of the 123
finalists. Even as a finalist, Schartz did not like his chances of winning the
big prize.

“I don’t think I’ve
ever won, outside of when I was playing the lotto,” he said. “I won $5 on my
lottery ticket.”

Schartz and Glenda
Zimmerman were the final two contestants Friday. Zimmerman’s No. 60 ball was
the final drawn, leaving Schartz as the winner. He plans to put the new car to
good use.

“We’re going to
drive it,” he said. “I’ve got a 13-year-old daughter who is going to be driving
here in a couple years, so we’re looking forward to getting something for her.”

Seth Schartz wins car at 'Blazin' Hot Summer Giveaway'

The Great Bend Optimist Club will again be hosting the Kids Fun Zone at Party in the Park on Saturday, Aug. 13. 

The Fun Zone includes several inflatables that kids will be able to play on all day long with the purchase of an Optimist Kids Zone bracelet. The Kids Zone will be open from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. on the north side of Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday. 

One thing that’s different this year is that all inflatables are "wet inflatables" so kids will get to slip and slide and get wet in the Fun Zone. 

Admission to the Optimist Kids Fun Zone is $3 per child or $10 for a family of four or more.

If your garden is producing more fresh vegetables than you can work in to the daily menu plan you may want to consider freezing. Most vegetables need to be blanched before freezing to inactivate enzymes and protect their quality. This is done by water or steam blanching. Enzymes are a natural component of food. They work inside food and can change flavor, texture, color and nutrition. Blanching stops enzymes and protects the food from quality changes.

Occasionally I will get a call from someone who asks if blanching can be done in the microwave? Using the microwave may produce poor results. Due to uneven heating, the microwave may not completely inactivate enzymes. This results in off flavors, poor texture and loss of color. The microwave does not save time or energy.

To blanch vegetables correctly, briefly expose them to boiling water or steam. Then cool rapidly in ice water to stop cooking. Blanching destroys microorganisms on the vegetable surface and is essential for top-quality frozen vegetables.

For products like tomatoes you will notice that they will have a mushy texture when thawed and are suitable only for cooking in soups, stews and sauces. Tomatoes that are frozen raw become watery and can develop an off-flavor after a short time in the freezer. Tomatoes that are too ripe for safe canning but still sound and free from decay can be frozen safely.

If you are wanting to freeze sweet corn, it is important to preserve it as soon after harvest as possible for best quality. To prepare corn-on-the-cob for freezing: Blanch small ears (1 ¼ inches or less in diameter) 7 minutes in boiling water; medium-size ears (1 ¼ to 1 ½ inches) 9 minutes; and large ears (1 ½ inches or more) 11 minutes. Cool in several changes of ice cold water and drain. If desired, cut ears into uniform 4-, 6-, or 8-inch pieces and package in freezer bags or containers.

Be aware there is a significant difference between a plastic storage bag and plastic freezer bags. Make sure you are using the heavier freezer bags for best results.

Wednesday was World Lion Day. The Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo will conduct a World Lion Day keeper chat on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 1:30 p.m.

World Lion Day keeper chat at Great Bend zoo

Spending nearly $5 million on a renovation project for the support services building was an easy decision for the USD 428 Great Bend Board of Education on Monday. After voting 7-0 to move forward on that project, the board split with a 5-2 approval for an online tutoring program that will cost the district a touch over $101,000.

According to Paper's website, the service was created to solve equity, cost, and scale for school districts. With Monday's vote, USD 428 will purchase a 12-month subscription to the service for all students grades 5-12. Paper features multi-lingual chat-based tutoring available 24/7, and also has an essay review component so students can upload written documents and receive immediate feedback. 

"Out of our needs assessment that we administered to all of our buildings in December and January, what we found out is that our students who are recommended for homework help at the high school, and PEP at the middle school, for extra help with their work," said Assistant Superintendent Tricia Reiser. "We're just not having as much coverage by adults to help them out."

Paper tutors are licensed, fully-vetted teachers, and students can access those tutors from their school-issued Chromebooks, or any internet device. Teachers are notified of student logins so they, too, can track activity.

In March 2020, congress set aside nearly $13.2 billion for Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief, and the district will use those ESSER dollars to pay for the service.

But not all board members agreed with purchasing Paper. Deanna Essmiller expressed concerns about the number of students that would actually use the service. 

"Some of the virtual tutoring, they've struggled to get students to participate, particularly the students who need the most support, which we know," Essmiller said. "How are you going to get them to participate?"

Essmiller said one Florida school district had purchased 5,000 hours of tutoring through Paper, but after six months, students had used just 500 hours. She also said some districts have complained about a 3-minute wait time for responses to student questions. Reiser said she was assured responses would be delivered within 30 seconds.

Board Member Chad Burroughs asked when students would have time to log in if they are busy with other activities, and said there were still more questions than answers. "I'm not seeing when they're going to have time to log in," he said. "That's my biggest hangup, is getting kids to log in."

Reiser said the service could have many secondary benefits, from teachers leaning on the service for in-class tutoring and essay reading, to long-term substitutes using Paper to more effectively teach specific topics.

The board voted 5-2 to approve the 12-month contract, with Essmiller and Burroughs voting against.

🎤Sunflower Show: Recycling with Shawn Bates

Ellinwood Hospital’s Therapy Services has hired Allison Widener, Physical Therapist to the already growing team. Widener brings 18 years of experience with her and resides in Ellinwood. 

This addition to the team rounds out an already growing department with Troy Moore, PT &amp; Therapy Services Manager; John Cuffe, OT; and Dianna Smith, CPTA.

Widener received her bachelor’s from Bethel College and Master’s of Physical Therapy from Rockhurst University. She loves helping people, specializing in TMJ pain, low back &amp; neck pain, SI dysfunction/pregnancy, and chronic pain. 

"I incorporate anti-inflamatory nutrition, relaxation/stress reduction techniques, meditation, therapeutic stretching and strengthening along with my manual skills to restore full function and pain reduction to the affected area," said Widener on her mission to holistically treat the entire mind and body.

Widener and her husband moved back to his hometown of Ellinwood in 2011. 

"I'm excited to work at Ellinwood Hospital &amp; Clinic, because Ellinwood is my community," said Widener. "My children go to Ellinwood schools and my husband works here as well with his financial planning business. I want to connect and help my community heal." 

Widener starts Aug. 22 and is accepting new patients now.

With the addition of new services and teammembers in the department, the physical space in the hospital for Therapy Services is busting at the seams. In order to help aid in their growth, the Hospital has made the decision to remodel the current Education Room and turn it into the new Therapy Services Gym with enough space for two private treatment areas. The old Therapy Services gym will become the new conference room for meetings and presentations. 

"Doing this allows the Therapy Services team to function more efficiently and effectively, while still providing excellent care to the patient," said Kile Magner, CEO.&nbsp; "It’s a logical next step for the team that we have been anticipating for a while now. We are very excited for Allison to start and are proud to have her on our team."

The remodel and transition should be complete within the next week. There will be an Ellinwood Chamber Coffee hosted in the new space on Friday, Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. The entire community is invited to attend, check out the new space and meet the entire Therapy Services team. You will also get the chance to learn more about their new services, including Dry Needling which Troy Moore is now certified in.

The Perseid Meteor Shower watch party is ready to go Friday, Aug. 12 at the
Kansas Wetlands Education Center, located northeast of Great Bend. 
Each year, the Earth passes through the dust and debris of the Swift-Tuttle
comet, and KWEC celebrates by watching the meteors or shooting stars as they burn
in our atmosphere. KWEC Program Specialist Mandy Kern said this year’s theme will center on the James Webb Space
Telescope. 
"We'll learn about what the telescope looks for and look at some of the images that it has taken," said Kern. "We'll do several hands-on experiments that will look at how that telescope uses infrared energy. We'll have participants walk through the life cycle of a massive star." 
The event Friday will be from 8:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. at the Kansas Wetlands Education
Center and will allow stargazers to potentially spot 60 - 100 meteors per hour
during this time. "We'll have the planetarium for shows," said Kern. "We'll have one telescope set up. If people want to bring their own telescope, that's great. We do encourage people to bring lawn chairs or blankets so they can sit out and enjoy the sky while they enjoy s'mores and look for the meteors." 
The public is invited to join KWEC for the free, family-friendly

Gates open at 6 p.m. at Al Burns Field for the Crash Dadeez Kids Concert and the American Mullet Contest. Fool House's Ultimate 90s Dance Party takes the stage at 7:30. After some fireworks, the Kory Brunson Band closes out the party. Great Bend Community Coordinator Christina Hayes says come prepared.

"You'll want to bring your blanket or chair to sit on because it is in an open ballfield," she said. "You can bring your cooler in with whatever you would like to drink. However, we do have one strong rule: you must be 21 if you're bringing alcoholic beverages in - should be cereal malt beverages. We do check IDs, and we do not allow glass in the ballfield. We do not have a beer garden so therefore, it's either BYOB or nothing."

Florida-based Fool House brings a "larger than life production" with the sights and sounds of some of the top stars of the 90s. The band keeps a busy schedule with a stop in Kansas City Friday, Party in the Park on Saturday, and shows in Indiana and Illinois the following week.

"What's really awesome about it is, the night before they're playing for more than $30 a ticket at Knucklheads in Kansas City," Hayes said. "If you wanted to go see them at Knucklheads you're paying a lot more money there. But you can get your ticket for $5 here. It's going to be a lot of fun. They're a very high-energy group of guys."

Fireworks follow the Fool House show at 10 p.m., and Great Bend-native Kory Brunson takes the stage at 10:30.

Early Thursday morning, a citizen notified the Great Bend Police Department that an owl was stuck under a fence.

Staff from the Golden Belt Humane Society Animal Control was able to untangle and transport the owl to the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo.
