Another fall prep sports season is in full swing around the state of Kansas as Monday marks the first day of practice. Along with the many new athletes competing this year, Great Bend Activities Director Matt Westerhaus is excited about his new start. Westerhaus officially began his duties at GBHS on Aug. 1.

"When you've got great coaches and great people, it makes that transition pretty smooth and simple," Westerhaus said. "They know the requirements, and they know to get things in and get things taken care of. It hasn't been as chaotic as probably one would assume. It's been good, it's been great. Everybody has been awesome."

Westerhaus joined USD 428 after serving as the athletic director at Junction City High School. A native of Junction City, Westerhaus played high school basketball there before playing at Benedictine College in Atchison. He was hired for the Great Bend position in January and is already pleased with the facilities and staff.

"We've got wonderful facilities," he said. "Probably even more important are the people who take care of those facilities, whether it's the grounds crew, the custodial staff. Every time you walk on or into a facility, it's clean, it's ready to go for whatever is coming next. Kudos to the 428 group that makes that happen. Our kids probably don't realize how important that is, and don't recognize it, but I know our coaching staff does, and myself. It's just one of those little things that makes a big difference."

Westerhaus takes over for David Meter, who worked in the district for 43 years and served as activities director at GBHS for 22 years. Courtney Kelly takes over for Lana Wolf, who retired from the activities office last May after 34 years.

"Lana and Dave were staples in the activities department for a lot of years," Westerhaus said. "A lot of people leaned on them to make things happen and provide solutions. Courtney Kelly, my new assistant, and myself are the same thing. Our office is there to provide support for coaches, sponsors, and help them do what they need to do to make our programs and students successful."

Westerhaus also thanked the physicians and other workers who provided free physicals to student-athletes on Aug. 6.

"I'd be reminiscent to not thank the doctors and everybody in the community who came out and made the free physicals a huge success," he said. "I think we had over 250 families and students take advantage of that day. It's just another testament to the Great Bend community for being so helpful and making things happen." 

The fall season at GBHS is a full one with football, volleyball, cross country, soccer, girls' tennis, and girls' golf. Westerhaus said many Panther athletes put in a good summer of workouts to prepare for the upcoming season.

"Probably over 60 of our student-athletes were in the weight room 95 percent of the time all summer," he said. "They have put the time, energy, and effort into helping themselves and their teams prepare for the upcoming season. It's exciting to see them putting the time and energy in, and hopefully it will pay off in the long run for all of our programs here in Great Bend."

With the sports season now in full swing, Westerhaus said he is ready to play his part in GBHS's success this year.

"I'm a pretty energetic guy, love to compete each and every day," he said. "I just look forward to getting to know people, getting to know our students. The Great Bend community has been very welcoming to my wife and myself the past two months."

Before the schedule hits full speed, GBHS is hosting its Meet the Panthers event in Jack Kilby Square on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 5 p.m. The Lady Panther volleyball team holds its scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. at GBHS, and the Panther football team hosts a jamboree with Hoisington and Scott City at 6 p.m. that evening.

UPDATE: A 7-year-old Kansas boy injured in a 3-vehicle crash Aug. 10 in Pottawatomie County has died.

&nbsp;On Saturday, 7-year-old Korbin Tinkel, of Wamego, died from injuries in the crash that also took the life of his father, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. His father, Randy L. Tinkel, age 37, graduated from Great Bend High School in 2003.

&nbsp;Just after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10,&nbsp;a 2015 Western semi driven by&nbsp; Mark E&nbsp;Stanwix, 44, Lecompton, was eastbound on U.S. 24 just west of Airport Road.

The semi rear-ended a 2008 Ford Edge driven by Megan K. Schindler, 34, St. Mary's, who was slowing and coming up behind a 2013 Ford F250 driven by Randy Tinkel, Wamego, who was stopped waiting to make a left turn.&nbsp; The impact pushed the semi and Ford Edge into the pickup.

The Ford Edge came to rest on its side north of the roadway. The Ford F250 came to rest on the south side of the roadway on its roof. The semi&nbsp; came to rest on the south of the roadway in a field.

Randy Tinkel was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Stewart's Funeral Home.

EMS transported Korbin Tinkel and a 2-year-old boy in the pickup to Children's Mercy.&nbsp; EMS transported a third passenger in the Ford F250 Jillian C Tinkel, 36, Wamego, to Wamego Health Center.

EMS transported Schindler to Stormont Vail. Stanwix was not injured. The 2-year-old in the Ford was the only occupant properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (8/15)

A pet boarding facility within a residential area of Great Bend will
have their case to keep their operation open sent before the Great Bend
Planning Commission. 

After receiving a complaint, the City of Great Bend was
notified a multiple animal permit cannot be renewed this year for Miss Jenny’s
Pet Palace at 5908 Broadway Avenue. The governing body voted 6-1 to initiate an
amendment process to the zoning regulations and present the amendment to the
Planning Commission before the city council has the final say. 
The dog kenneling business, owned by Larry and Jennifer Kurtz, has been in
operation for the past two years. The residence, on west Broadway, is zoned
R-1, single-family residential district. A zoning official received a complaint
and notified the city that kennels are not allowed in residential districts. 
The city council questioned how the Kurtz couple received a permit in the first
place, which City Attorney Alan Glendenning explained. 
"There's two different issues here," said Glendenning. "One, is getting a multiple animal permit. That you can get, even in a residential zone, for personal use. In the ordinance, the clerk should not issue that until the humane society approves the kennel. The clerk got that approval, but the humane society doesn't think about zoning. It almost makes it look like the zoning doesn't come in except at renewal time, which is what has happened here."

Larry Kurtz said the facility passed inspections by both the local humane
society and the Kansas Department of Agriculture. The kennel also received a license from the state to operate a kennel to board dogs for pet owners.

Kurtz added Miss Jenny’s Pet
Palace invested more than $15,000 to the shed and outside of the facility to operate
the business. With several people in attendance at Monday’s city council
meeting to support Kurtz, he said they try to be courteous of their neighbors
with barking dogs. 
"The notice of violation has remarks that multiple complaints were received from neighbors in our area in regards to barking dogs coming from the property," said Larry Kurtz. "I will admit that at times, dogs we board do get to barking...they're dogs. We try to be mindful and courteous to our neighbors and get it stopped quickly." 
The only way a dog boarding operation may be operated in a residential zone is
if the regulations are amended. Such amendments will go before the Planning
Commission before making its way back to the council for approval.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Tuesday's Weather

The start of the school year is bringing a new look to a busy intersection
near the Great Bend Middle School. Along with the reconstruction of the 19th
Street and Harrison Street intersection to improve safety, the intersection
will soon become a four-way stop. 
Through a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, facilitated by the Kansas
Department of Commerce, Great Bend was provided a 50% reimbursement for a $1.1 million
project that resurfaced a portion of Broadway Avenue and reconstructed the 19th
and Harrison intersection. 
Plans were in place for more than a year, but most of the Great Bend City
Council members found out for the first time Monday night that the intersection
would turn into a four-way stop. 
City Administrator Kendal Francis said the current setup has stop signs for east and
westbound traffic on 19th Street, but will add stop signs for north
and southbound traffic on Harrison Street this week. "We're confident we can get the word out," said Francis. "We've talked about the possibility of maybe even putting flashing lights on the signs to get people's attention, at least in the near term."&nbsp; 
Through bump-out sidewalks, the reconstruction shortened the distance children
have to walk through the street in the crosswalk. 
With school starting Thursday, Francis added the four-way stop will slow down
motorists driving down Harrison.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

"Once we start getting the school traffic through there, people will start adjusting to it," added Francis. "I think it's very-much needed."

ROAD WORK UPDATE: Pawnee County Road &amp; Bridge Crews will be finishing up asphalt work on the North Burdett Road early this week and moving over to the Timken Road by Wednesday, and then to the O'Rourke Road. Memories Matter Bereavement Camp is a one-day camp experience for kids ages 5-12 who have experienced the death of a parent, grandparent, sibling or other loved one. Each child will have experiences that help children understand grieving is necessary for healing.

Created and directed by hospice grief counselors, the camp is free of charge and underwritten by The University of Kansas Health System and Great Bend Recreation Commission.

The camp will help children understand that grief and mourning are a natural reaction, not one-time events, that children grieve differently than adults and all feelings are OK.

At this day of healing, trained counselors will guide campers through a variety of activities designed to provide healing for the body, mind and spirit. Activities will include music, art, games and puppet shows.

If you know a child who has experienced the loss of a loved one, you now have a way to help. Memories Matter Bereavement Camp will take place 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, September 24. Advance registration is required.

Team Sorghum Attends Vietnam Trade Delegation The U.S. Grains Council recently hosted representatives from the Sorghum Checkoff and Texas Sorghum, including National Sorghum Producers Chairman Kody Carson, in Vietnam. This region has the largest animal feed market in Southeast Asia&nbsp;with a demand of over 30.1 MMT for grain in 2021. There is tremendous growth in the commercial feed market, which is expected to eclipse 35 MMT. Sorghum Crop Update By August 7, fifty-five percent of the nation's sorghum acreage had reached the headed stage, 12 percentage points&nbsp;behind last year and 9 points behind the 5-year average. Twenty-five percent of the nation's sorghum was at or beyond the coloring stage by August 7, equal to last year but 2 percentage points behind average. Twenty-nine percent of the nation's sorghum was rated in good to excellent condition on August 7, one percentage point above the previous week. In its first report of the year relying on farmer surveys for yield projections, the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report projected a national average sorghum yield of 53.2 bushels. This yield would be the lowest since 2012 and reflects the severity of the drought currently plaguing the High Plains. Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (8/12-8/14)

The concrete around Great Bend High School is a little more colorful. This week, GBHS seniors have been busy personalizing "Senior Parking Spots." Elly Somers was part of a group of students who approached the administration last year about implementing the program for the first time at GBHS.

"I've always seen other schools do this, so I thought it'd be a fun idea," Somers said. "Me and three other people brought it to our principal and really pushed for it to happen this year. I felt like it was going to be a good way for the senior class to get together, and for underclassmen to look forward to when they're seniors."

To claim a parking stall, seniors must have a grade-point average of at least 3.0, and the stalls cost $20. The stalls will be reserved for that student from 7:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on school days. Students painted on all sides of the GBHS campus, from the big parking lot south of the school, to the stalls along 19th Street, and even some on the 21st Street side. Students painted a wide variety of designs. 

Reserving the stalls may have been the easy part. The seniors had to endure temperatures near the century mark as they laid down their designs throughout the week. Somers said it was worth the sweat.

"I've had fun with it,"she said. "I think other people have had fun with it. Some people have gotten sunburned. I think it's been pretty fun. It does take a lot of work. It took me like three days, but other than that, I think it's really been fun for people."

The Senior Parking Spots raised more than $1,000 for the senior class. How they will spend the money is yet to be determined.

The stalls will be reserved for that student from 7:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on school days. Students painted on all sides of the GBHS campus, from the big parking lot south of the school, to the stalls along 19th Street, and even some on the 21st Street side. Students painted a wide variety of designs. Reserving the stalls may have been the easy part. The seniors had to endure temperatures near the century mark as they laid down their designs throughout the week. Somers said it was worth the sweat."I've had fun with it,"she said. "I think other people have had fun with it. Some people have gotten sunburned. I think it's been pretty fun. It does take a lot of work. It took me like three days, but other than that, I think it's really been fun for people."The Senior Parking Spots raised more than $1,000 for the senior class. How they will spend the money is yet to be determined.<figure>

David Condos, a reporter for High Plains Public Radio and the Kansas News Service, has won a National Edward R. Murrow Award — one of the most prestigious prizes in broadcast journalism — for his coverage of western Kansas, its ongoing problems with water, its history of racism and how meatpacking transformed the region.

Condos won the award for Excellence in Writing and was selected as the national winner from among this year's regional Murrow award recipients across the country.

Condos is a reporter based in Hays for High Plains Public Radio and the Kansas News Service, which is a statewide collaboration of public radio newsrooms. This is the first-ever national Murrow award for HPPR in the station’s 42-year history.

The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) recognized his work for three stories written and reported in western Kansas:

“A national organization recognized what’s obvious to people in Kansas, that David is a talented and serious journalist,” said Scott Canon, the managing editor of the Kansas News Service. “His work has brought important stories to a statewide and national audience. David’s ability to report complicated stories in easily digestible ways is a rare thing.”

The award was given based on “excellence in writing that conveys the feeling and significance of events to the listener or viewer.” The Murrow Awards are among the most prestigious in news, recognizing the importance and impact of journalism as a service to the community.

Condos took home&nbsp;three regional Edward R. Murrow Awards earlier this year.

Additionally, he received two national awards from the Public Media Journalists Association (PMJA): First place in Enterprise reporting for his series on racism in Kansas, “Race in the Free State,” and second place in Photojournalism for his&nbsp;photo of Elizabeth Dole&nbsp;at the funeral of former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole.

Condos will be recognized alongside all of the national Murrow award winners at the RTDNA’s gala in New York City in October.

Business Ownership Basics...seminar coming to Great Bend

Local historian Justin Engleman will host an encore presentation on the
historic homes on Great Bend’s Broadway Avenue later this month. 
Engleman will go through the individual history of various homes on Broadway. 
Barton County Historical Society Director Richard Lartz said the historical
society will also open an exhibit the same night as Engleman’s presentation that
celebrates Great Bend’s 150th anniversary. "The exhibit will include some bird's-eye-view maps that were made of Great Bend in its early days," said Lartz. "There's one from 1878 and another from 1882. We'll have some other things from that time period as well." 
The “Broadway Beauties” presentation and Great Bend 150th exhibit
will take place Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. at the historical society on
South Highway 281. Admission is $5 and free of charge for historical society members.
