Chamber welcomes Great Bend photography business' new location

Stueder Contractors officially welcomed Tarynn (Stueder) Kirmer back to the family business. Tarynn started at Stueder's in April 2022 as a customer service representative and will be completing client billing.

"I've been around Stueder Contractors my entire life," said Tarynn. "You might remember me as the toddler in TV commercials back in the day!"&nbsp;

Now she's looking forward to gaining insight and a new perspective as an employee. 

"I'm excited to help continue to bring excellent service to our community," Tarynn said.&nbsp;

Tarynn graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Business Management with an emphasis in Human Resources, having previously worked in the community after graduation at Farmers Bank and Trust.

Kirmer rejoins family business at Stueder Contractors

LA CROSSE — A Great Bend woman has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years for the January murder of a La Crosse man, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said today in a news release.

Jennifer Stipe, 49, of Great Bend, was sentenced in Rush County District Court by Chief Judge Bruce Gatterman. Stipe pleaded guilty on Aug. 10 to one count of first-degree murder. Gatterman also ordered Stipe to pay $5,000 in restitution.

The charges stem from the Jan. 11, murder of Leslie Marvin Randa, 61, in La Crosse. The case was investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Rush County Sheriff’s Office.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Jessica Domme of Schmidt’s office.

Related charges against one additional defendant remain pending. Charges are merely accusations; defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Kansas Republican Party bus tour to stop in Great Bend

National Do Something Nice Day is coming up on Oct. 5. The Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Club at Great Bend High School is not waiting around. Three years ago, right before COVID-19 hit, student Joanna Sanchez noticed some of her friends were struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts. She was looking for a way to help brighten the day for her fellow students and approached teacher Shelly Duvall about starting the club.

"She really was thinking what can we do at the school in order to make it a more positive environment for people and kind of lessen the bullying," Duvall said. "She had the idea of wanting to start a Random Acts of Kindness Club at the school. She came to me and asked if I would be willing to sponsor the club, and I said absolutely. This is year three of the club."

Being a member of the RAK Club is free, and the only requirement is being kind. The club has more than doubled in membership since the first year.

"Really the way to be part of the club is just to be kind and join in on some of the fun activities we're doing," said Duvall. "We started probably with about 80 kids the first year. It doesn't necessarily mean they have to be active every single time we do an activity, but to be a member you just have to be a kind person. This year we're actually up to 170 kids. It's the biggest number we've had so far."

Last Wednesday evening, more than 70 club members spent around 30 minutes filling out Post-It notes in the cafeteria. Messages like "Stay Kind" and "Push Through" were posted all around the school to increase positivity. In the past, coin jars were filled with pocket change in a competition to see which class could raise the most money. Those funds went to purchasing Christmas gifts for someone on the angel tree.

"Things like that, things that don't necessarily cost a lot of money to do but makes people feel good at the same time," Duvall said.

Then there are High-Five Fridays. The goal is to get more kids communicating in a positive manner, even with relative strangers. 

"Sometimes we have kids that are maybe more apt to being active in school walking by somebody who maybe is a little more introverted and doesn't talk as much," said Duvall. "It was a High Five Friday, and they say, 'Hey, High Five Friday!' and they give that kid a high five. Sometimes that head raises a little bit, and they're able to walk around the hallway knowing, 'Hey, somebody noticed me today.' It's amazing how far a little high five can go for somebody like that."

Local businesses have expressed interest in the club. Marmie's, Rosencrantz-Bemis Water Well, Chris and Julie Spray, and Scott and Karen Moeder have all helped the club financially. 

"I remember last year, I believe it was Marmies, they were an original RAK Business Club member, and they did donuts for their employees on a Friday to show an act of kindness within their business," Duvall said. "If anybody is interested in being a part, we'd love to have them."

It's not just for farm kids. Area 4-H Ambassadors Ailey Williams and Parker Dicks spoke at Wednesday's Barton County Commission meeting in preparation for National 4-H Week that runs from Oct. 2-8. The week celebrates the impact 4-H makes by empowering youth with the skills they need throughout life.

"4-H offers over 40 project areas from art to woodworking," Williams told commissioners. "We usually think of livestock projects, but 4-H is so much more than cows and cookies. We have eight active 4-H clubs across Barton County."

Great Bend has four of those clubs, Hoisington has two, and Ellinwood and Claflin-Odin each have one. 4-H Youth Development Extension Agent Michelle Beran said at least two of the four clubs in Great Bend are not agriculture or livestock based. Regardless of the project area, the goal is to prepare youth for successful lives as adults.

"There's reading, there's wildlife, there are all kinds of things they can explore," she said. "Really, 4-H is as much about how we develop the young person as it is about the project area. While they're learning about wildlife or woodworking, they're also learning communication skills, they're learning time management, and organization. They're really learning how, in many ways, to work as a team and to be committed to community service, and to leadership."

Beran added that without young leaders returning home to serve as business and government leaders, small communities not only fail to thrive, they fail to survive.

Commissioner Jon Prescott inquired about adding a computer coding program to the 4-H curriculum. Beran said 4-H has a strong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) foundation and, in August, members participated in Crop Quest. They were able to see how a large drone can benefit farms, worked on computer coding and rocketry, and even flew some small drones of their own.

4-H Week: Barton Co. Commission hears from area 4-H ambassadors

Join Wheatland Electric’s Cram the Van at Great Bend Alive Plaza from 5-9 p.m. at September’s Final Friday to help support the Community Food Bank of Barton County with a cash or can donation. 

Wheatland is headed into fall with a renewed commitment to the communities we serve – “Think BIG!” is this year’s motto – Big Energy, Big Support, Big Community, Big Ideas. We are hoping to make this year’s Cram the Van their BIGGEST, BRIGHTEST and BEST year yet!

This month’s venue will feature the newly painted Art Alley, which is the alley between the 2000 block of Forest and Lakin Aves., designed by local artist Melanie Ryan, and painted by community volunteers.

September’s Final Friday activities include live music, food, drinks, and a livestream of the Great Bend High School varsity football game against Dodge City. Go Panthers! 

Attendees are encouraged to bring a cash or can donation to Cram the Van, play the 50/50 raffle, register for prizes, and join in the fun!

On-site donors will also be able to enter to win a Samsung Smart Projector Freestyle valued at $700, a winner will be drawn at the end of the Cram the Van season. Monetary donations can also be made online at https://www.weci.net/cram-van-food-drive, and all online donors will be entered for a chance to win a nugget ice maker for every $10 donated (value: $630). Every fall since 2014, Wheatland Electric has hosted community gatherings, school competitions, and other events to collect donations for local food banks across our service territory. 

The annual food drive is coined “Cram the Van” thanks to our signature fleet vehicle: a red, extended passenger van used to collect and deliver donations. Over the past eight years, and thanks to the generosity of the communities they serve, Wheatland has been able to facilitate the collection of more than 86 tons (172,309 lbs.) of food for local food banks across southwest and southcentral Kansas.

Support your local food bank at Friday's 'Cram the Van'

School board lunch meetings are back in session. With the start of the USD 428 school year last month, the board of education resumed its on-site luncheons with a meeting at Park Elementary School Thursday at noon. Park Principal Kelsey Sciacca highlighted some changes in her school for the upcoming year with an overall theme of getting back to normal.

"When we think about our second-grade kids, third-grade kids, that's half our school that have lived COVID, and that's all they understand of school," she told the board. "We're trying to change our mindset just within our building with our staff, our students, and our parents."

First impressions are big, and the school now has morning greeters consisting of both students and staff. A custom sign is created each morning, and a banner and a colorful mural by Melanie Ryan greet the students inside. Student and Family Advocate Alana Blessing leads approximately 60 students with a dance outside, and she also brings Theo, the therapy puppy to school each day.

But it's not all fun. The school is also pushing for higher attendance and achievement. A tiger prize moves to the classroom with the highest attendance each week. Students with 98-percent attendance for a given month are entered into a drawing for family gift cards. The school will call the homes of students with unexcused absences.

High expectations continue to things like manners, with students saying "please" and "thank you." And achievement is recognized on all fronts with a student from each classroom being recognized with a R.O.A.R.S. award to celebrate excellence for being respectful, showing outstanding leadership, showing academic success, and being responsible and safe.

"We sometimes get so focused on our Tier 2 and Tier 3 kids that we forget those kids who are really excelling," Sciacca said. "We've really talked to our teachers you might have the same kid win a R.O.A.R.S. award for four weeks in a row. That's great. You're going to have other kids who want to be that child."

Instructional Coach Lacey Hofflinger spoke about the Rocket Math program that is used district-wide but loved by Park Elementary students. A reading contest will also kick off during the second nine weeks of the school year.

"That also really seems to get kids excited about reading," Hofflinger said. "I like that the reward is a book. They're rewarded with more books when they fill out a reading log."

The USD 428 Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Oct. 10 at  p.m. at the district building on Patton Road.

The Great Bend Hike &amp; Bike path includes approximately six miles
that starts from the west side of town, angles south over Railroad Avenue and
then follows the Arkansas River east. 
Great Bend City Administrator Kendal Francis said there have been talks for
years of extending the trail from the west point and bringing it north around
the city. 
With collections coming in now from the .15% sales tax designated for “quality
of life” projects, extending the trail is getting closer to reality. Francis
mentioned the overall project would still likely be stretched over a
three-year period. "We'll see it spread out over three years because it will cost some money," said Francis. "If we could get some money set aside as matching funds for grants, it might help us to get the project done quicker. I could see it being done in segments. It would be hard to knock out a large amount."

Francis added the goal would be to take the path north, near the cemetery on 24th
Street and have bicyclists and hikers go through Veterans Memorial Park. 
The city has already been saving funds to make repairs to the existing path and
possible expansion. The 10-year capital improvement plan from the “quality of
life” sales tax lists giving $50,000 toward the project in 2024, $190,000 in
2025 and $110,000 in 2026.&nbsp;

Homecoming candidates for Hoisington High School

I still remember the nurses and staff lining the hallways of the Houston hospital as my husband and I were leaving with our two-day old daughter. Now, years later, the words they said, “Your lives will never be the same,” still come to mind. Babies don’t come with instructions, but wonderful support from family and friends helped us through those first months.

The joys of parenthood far outweigh the challenges; at least I feel that way. Even though we made some mistakes along the way, we always tried to set a positive example for our three children and now our grandchildren. A favorite Ann Landers column I clipped and saved from many years ago still rings true today.

The information in her column actually comes from fourth graders. That’s right; eight- or nine-year-old kids giving advice to parents on how to raise children. The honesty of the children is refreshing. Here are a few of their suggestions:

· Don’t give me everything I ask for. Sometimes, I am just testing you to see how much I can get.

· Keep promises, both good and bad. If you promise a reward, make sure you give it to me. If you promise a punishment, make sure I get that too.

· Don’t compare me with anybody else, especially if the comparison will hurt somebody’s feelings.

· Let me do as much for myself as I can. That is how I learn. If you do everything for me, I will never be able to anything for myself.

· Don’t scream at me. It makes me scream back, and I don’t want to be a screamer. Screamers sound awful.

· Don’t tell lies in front of me or ask me to tell lies to help you out. It makes me think less of you and of myself.

· When you are wrong about something, admit it. It will not hurt my opinion of you. It will make it easier for me to admit it when I am wrong.

I have several copies of an excellent parenting curriculum that I would be happy to share with interested families. The Responsive Discipline toolbox includes 49 tools that focus on prevention, guidance, and consequences. There is a small charge of $3 for the toolbox and quantities are limited. KRUG: Joys of parenthood outweigh the challenges

Three Kansas wheat producers stepped out of the tractor and onto Capitol Hill in mid-September to share their on-the-ground perspective of the major issues impacting agriculture and present potential policy solutions in preparation for the next Farm Bill.

“Getting farmers on the Hill allows Kansas legislators and their staff to ask farmers questions directly on issues they are discussing,” said Shayna DeGroot, Kansas Wheat director of membership and government affairs, who accompanied the group. “Farmers can tell legislators directly what’s going on in farm country and fill in knowledge gaps. These face-to-face conversations are beneficial and productive with both sides presenting new ideas and solutions. It’s much more personable and more joyful to shake each other’s hands.”

The delegation representing the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers was part of the larger fall fly-in organized by the National Association of Wheat Growers, which arranged for morning briefings with USDA agency representatives on September 13 and 14.

During the afternoon each day, the Kansans - including Chris Tanner from Norton, Clay Schemm from Sharon Springs and Kyler Millershaski from Lakin - met with elected officials and their staff with the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. The KAWG delegation also had the opportunity to attend a reception with the biennial Agricultural Trade Goodwill Mission from Taiwan, ahead of the delegation’s visit to the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center in Manhattan, Kansas.

During the Hill visits, the KAWG crew walked legislators through the 2021-2022 growing season. With drought impacting most of the state, average yields decreased significantly from the previous year - 38 bushels per acre in 2022 compared to 52 bushels per acre in 2021. Despite the drop, Kansas continued to hold the title as the leading producer of winter wheat in 2022 at 260.3 million bushels, followed by Washington, Oklahoma and Montana.

While legislators cannot control the weather, they can assist Kansas farmers with other items on an expanding list of concerns, including the high cost and limited availability of fertilizer, high crop insurance premiums, shortages in farm labor and continued drought and wildfires. The KAWG crew outlined how leaders can help farmers, including by promoting agricultural exports, advocating for crop insurance programs, reducing regulatory costs and supporting agricultural research.

Tanner highlighted discussions on the practicality of regulations like commercial driver’s license requirements for on-farm use, especially in remote areas of western Kansas. He also took the opportunity to discuss how potential adjustments to crop insurance practices could better reflect how crop rotations can wildly impact insurance adjustments and serve as a more effective safety net.

“All the offices were very receptive to the issues we brought up and aware of current issues Kansas farmers are facing,” DeGroot said. “We have a delegation that serves on multiple committees that pertain to agriculture - from the ag committee to transportation, ways and means and others. Across the board, they all end up impacting agriculture.”

The trio of farmers is back in Kansas and back to work for the fall fieldwork season. Likewise, DeGroot pointed out that the policy work is also far from done. The fly-in’s discussions garner a whole after-action to-do list to follow up on conversations, answer questions and make sure legislators and board members alike have the information they need to enact solutions. Wheat Scoop: Kansas wheat farmers take to Capitol Hill

Two of the top runners in Kansas are coming to Great
Bend. For a fourth-straight fall, the Great Bend High School cross country
teams will host a Class 5A regional meet at the Lake Barton course. For a
third-year in that stretch, the Oct. 22 races will also include a Class 2A regional.

“It’s awesome
that, for the fourth year in a row, we’re able to host this,” said GBHS cross
country coach Lyles Lashley. “With the COVID year, we would have had two
classes out all four years, I believe. To be able to bring 24 teams into the
community, knowing we’ll hopefully have a few of the west teams stay the night
in hotels and eat in town, with all the fans, especially since we’ll be done around
lunch time. It’s nice to have them where they can come in and spend the money
in Great Bend.”

The Class 5A
girls, including Great Bend, will run first at 10 a.m. The Lady Panthers
dominated the regional field last year, placing all five scorers in the
top-eight to finish with 30 points. Maize South, who returns on Oct. 22,
finished second with 69 points. Great Bend went on to finish third at state,
and reigning state champion Mill Valley has moved to Class 6A.

“It’s nice to
be able to come out and run on our course because we obviously have a big home-course
advantage running out there with all the turns, and knowing the knicks and
knacks of the course,” Lashley said. “It’s definitely a blessing for us.”

Salina Central
sophomore Katelyn Rupe medaled in tennis instead of cross country as freshman,
but set school records last spring with gold medals in the 1600m and 3200m
runs. She won the Rim Rock Invitational this year in a state-best 17:45. 

Stanton County
senior Chesney Peterson returns to Great Bend after winning the Class 2A regional
and state title last fall. In May, Peterson tied Jackie Stiles, becoming just the second female
athlete in state history to capture 400, 800, 1600, and 3200m golds in one
state track meet, and she did so with some of the best times in state history.
The same day Rupe ran in Rim Rock, Peterson ran a sub-18 time in an uncontested
race on her home course in Stanton County. On the track, Peterson ranks No. 4 all-time in the state's 800m ranks, No. 13 in the 1600m run, and top-25 in the 3200m run.

“You can come
out to the course and see two of the best girls in a long time come out and
compete at our course, and have a chance to root on the Panthers, too,” Lashley
said.

The Class 5A
boys’ regional is slated for a 10:40 a.m. start. Panther senior Kaiden Esfeld
won last year’s regional crown in 16:29, 20 seconds slower than the
course-record of 16:09 he set earlier this season. Esfeld went on to finish
third at state.

Peterson and
the rest of the Class 2A girls, including Ellinwood, will run at 11:20 a.m.
Stanton County has won the last three Class 2A titles. The Class 2A boys will
begin at noon. &nbsp;The Stanton County boys
have won two of the last three Class 2A crowns.

Cross country regionals, top talent return to Lake Barton Oct. 22

On Wednesday, Sept. 28 at approximately 1:57 p.m., officers with the Great Bend Police Department contacted Marcus Miller, age 34, in the 1400 block of 2nd Street in the City of Great Bend. 

Miller was arrested on two City of Great Bend Municipal Court warrants. 

During the arrest, a crystal substance consistent with methamphetamines was located on Miller. A subsequent search of Miller's backpack turned up more suspected methamphetamine. The crystal substance was tested and showed a positive indication for methamphetamine. The crystal substance was weighed at the police department and showed approximately 4.5 grams. 

Miller was transported to the Barton County Jail and booked on his warrants, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia and no drug tax stamp.

In a separate case on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at approximately 5:40 p.m., officers with the Great Bend Police Department observed a male subject traveling in the area of 9th and Williams Street on a bike. 

Officers observed the subject throwing something on the east side of the street. Officers advised the subject to stop, but he continued to ride north bound. The male subject then jumped off his bike and ran on foot. 

Officers were able to catch the subject who was identified as Eduardo Torres, age 42. Torres was arrested for an outstanding Great Bend Municipal Court warrant. 

Officers located the items Torres had thrown on the side of the road. Officers located a bottle containing a crystal substance consistent with methamphetamine. Testing some of the crystal substance, it showed positive for methamphetamine. The methamphetamine was weighed at the Great Bend Police Department and showed approximately seven grams. 

Torres was arrested for his warrant, distribute methamphetamine and no drug tax stamp.

To celebrate Pilot International Founders’ Month, the Pilot Club of Great Bend annually honors one of their members by designating them Pilot International Club Ambassador. Vicki Richardson was chosen as the Great Bend Pilot International (PI) Ambassador for 2022 - 2023.&nbsp;

The PI Ambassador is a member who has an active role within the club, promotes and supports its activities, is active in projects that address Pilot International’s core areas of service focus: Brain Safety &amp; Fitness, and Caring for Families in Times of Need; and faithfully attends meeting, giving generously of her time to assist with service projects and fundraising activities.

The Pilot Club of Great Bend also made a contribution to the Pilot International Founders Fund in Vicki’s honor.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Pilot International Founders Fund provides scholarships that support graduate and undergraduate students working in fields related to Pilot International’s main areas of service focus. Pilot International and its local Pilot Clubs are able to improve the lives of others through education, volunteerism, financial support and research.

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will be sponsoring a Fall Middle School Dance. The dance will be held on Friday, Sept. 30, at the Great Bend Rec Activity Center located at 2715 18th&nbsp;Street from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. for all Great Bend Middle School students. &nbsp;

Admission is $5 per student at the door. Students need to show their GBMS student ID’s when entering the dance. No hats or caps will be allowed. Students will be allowed to leave at any time during the dance.&nbsp; But once they leave, they will not be allowed back into the dance and will need to leave the property.&nbsp; Pizza will be available for $1 per slice.&nbsp; Popcorn and water will be provided. For those that enjoy skating or skateboarding, the City of Great Bend has
plans to make repairs to the skate park in town. 
The Brit Spaugh Skate Park "Da Cage," on Morton Street, was constructed
several years ago. The facility, with ramps, has reached a point where it needs
to be resurfaced. 
Great Bend City Administrator Kendal Francis said the city is planning to
allocate approximately $130,000 in 2023 from the “quality of life” sales tax
revenue to make the repairs. "We think for the approximate $130,000 or $140,000 we could replace the surface of the skate park," said Francis. "We want to put it in for next year because I do think it needs to be a priority and get done quickly." 
The .15% “quality of life” sales tax is expected to generate $567,000 in 2023.
The skate park repairs is part of the 10-year capital improvement plan.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Adams Brown launches cybersecurity division

Call it "dirt cheap." At Wednesday's meeting, the Barton County Commission agreed to move forward on repairs of the Caterpillar 615C Scraper that is used to move dirt at the landfill, and also agreed to contract Prosser Dirt to haul in more dirt from an excavation project at Cheyenne Bottoms. 

"The crankshaft bolt came out causing the dampener and pulley to come off, which rendered the machine inoperable," Solid Waste Director Jennifer Hamby said of the repairs. "We sent it Foley Caterpiller in Salina to have the repair done. The initial quote was $56,000 for this repair."

The scraper had previously been rebuilt in 2018, but the warranty expired last year. In discussions with Foley, Hamby was able to get the repair price down to $30,000, and that also included a new seal for the hydraulic tank. Commissioner Kirby Krier noted this was not a maintenance issue for the machinery and made the motion for approval on the repair, which passed 5-0.

Approximately five years ago, members of the Hoisington Gun Club met with Phil Hathcock, who was then the landfill director. The club would be working on a project at Cheyenne Bottoms and agreed to let the landfill have the dirt. 

"The landfill can never have too much dirt," said Hamby. "We use dirt for cover, for building roads, building berms. We had agreed to pay for the hauling. The dirt is free but we would pay for the hauling."

Prosser Dirt is doing the excavation work and won the bid to haul the dirt at $120 per load, even if the work is subcontracted out. Commissioners agreed that is a good price for the dirt. Commissioner Jennifer Schartz asked how many loads the landfill would receive. Hamby did not have a number but said it will be 80,500 cubic yards of dirt. The landfill has already received 6,000 cubic yards. Hamby said the remainder of the project could take several years.
