Since Jewel Davis realizes the importance of continuing her education, she was eager to participate in a specialized leadership class to enhance her skills for the benefit of patients and colleagues.

As clinic office manager at Pawnee Valley Medical Associates (PVMA), Davis recently graduated from the Kansas Hospital Association Leadership Institute. PVMA, 713 W. 11th, is part of Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, 923 Carroll.

“I am honored to have been given the opportunity to attend this prestigious leadership program,” Davis said. “It is one of the best leadership classes I have attended. The Kansas Hospital Association has tailored the course to fit real-life issues that healthcare managers face in our facilities today.”

Course topics included: the difference between leadership and management; enhancing communication skills and grassroots advocacy; team building; conflict management; and challenges facing healthcare.

“The course gave me an extra set of tools to use in professional development opportunities,” Davis said. “The goal is to use these tools to facilitate positive change and innovation at our clinic and hospital.”

Davis, who has been in her PVMA management position for two years, attended the graduation ceremony during the KHA Annual Convention and Trade Show in Overland Park.

“Attending the classes and graduation has given me an opportunity to network with my peers from other clinics and hospitals across Kansas,” Davis commented. “This gives me the ability to reach out to others with knowledge about current healthcare issues. These friendships will last a lifetime.”

Davis, a Larned-area native, has worked in Larned for 24 years and held managerial positions for 20 of those years. Most recently, Davis was controller/corporate office manager for Straub International for 11 years and corporate office manager for Francis Financial/Corrosion DC for two years.

Laundry Love in Great Bend hosted by the United Way of Central Kansas. 
The mission of Laundry Love is to wash the clothes and bedding of low- and
no-income families and individuals. With no questions asked, anyone can stop by
and receive up to five loads of laundry done for free. 
United Way Executive Director Charell Owings said the monthly event started in
August and has been a good resource to hear what community members need. "We're loving it so far," said Owings. "We've really made some great connections with people that we wouldn't have made otherwise. It's easy to start conversations with people. It really makes for engaging topics and fun interaction." 
Laundry Love is scheduled for the third Saturday each month, and this Saturday’s
event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Discount Laundry on Jefferson Street,

Two well-deserving educators from Great Bend USD 428 have been named the 2023 USD 428 Teachers of the Year. Honorees, Dawn Szot, special education teacher at Great Bend High School, and Molly Brown, 3rd-grade teacher at Eisenhower Elementary School will now advance to the Kansas Teacher of the Year competition. “The Kansas Teacher of the Year program allows us to celebrate our outstanding teachers as well as elevate their work for recognition among colleagues and peers across the state,” said Khris Thexton, USD 428 Superintendent. “Mrs. Szot and Mrs. Brown stood out among the outstanding teachers considered for this award,” said Thexton. “It’s their time to shine and I congratulate them on the work they do every day. Beyond the classroom, they are leaders in their departments, buildings, and in our school community.”

Molly Brown, 2023 USD 428 Elementary Teacher of the Year Molly Brown’s career path to education started with a few uncommon twists. She first earned a degree in dance from The University of Kansas and planned to become a professional dancer, with hopes of touring the country with musical artists.

While pursuing her dream, she discovered her true passion while teaching dance classes to youth in Los Angeles, CA. Brown returned to Great Bend and began classes for her teaching certificate at Newman University while working as an English Language Teaching Assistant at Park Elementary School. 

After obtaining her degree in 2008, Brown taught in Hoisington for one year, followed by Hutchinson for 10 years. Brown returned “home” to Great Bend with her husband and son in 2019 and joined the Eisenhower Elementary team.

“Being an educator is the toughest job, however, it is also the most rewarding,” said Brown. “I tell my students every year, I am here to not only educate you but also help you to become kind and compassionate human beings. If they can learn to be kind, caring, and love one another, I feel I have done my job. Giving them the best education they deserve is a bonus!"

Brown is proud to share her insight and experience with new and aspiring teachers through the USD 428 Mentor Program and recently hosted a student teacher in her classroom for a semester. Brown serves on the Eisenhower Elementary Site Council, is secretary for the Parent-Teacher Organization, and is vice-president for Great Bend’s National Education Association. She also enjoys coaching her son’s baseball team, volunteering at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, and other civic projects and campaigns.

“Mrs. Brown came to Eisenhower as one of the most experienced teachers in the building,” said JoAnn Blevins, principal. “With most of the teaching staff in their first few years of teaching, Eisenhower needed a terrific leader and we found one in Mrs. Brown. Not only is she excellent with her students in her classroom, but she supports her colleagues. She collaborates, shares ideas, and advocates for her colleagues. Her colleagues learn as much from Mrs. Brown as her students do. That's a great combination!”

Dawn Szot, 2023 USD 428 Secondary Teacher of the Year In 2006, Szot received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education, followed by a Master of Science-Adaptive Special Education in 2008 from Fort Hays State University.

She was inspired by her brother, and by a previous job assisting adults with disabilities, to go back to school and pursue a career in special education.

“I follow a simple philosophy, to do what is right for each individual student while providing a positive, constructive, and warm learning environment,” said Szot. “I consider one of my greatest accomplishments to be building relationships based on trust and communication so parents know their child is safe in my classroom.”

Szot has taught in USD 428 for 15 years. She is a member of the GBHS Building Leadership Team, Special Education Department co-chair, director of Summer School, manager of the Panther Pantry, and serves as a mentor and ambassador in the District’s mentoring program for new teachers. She is also active in the community, volunteering for the Barton County Historical Museum, CDDO (Community Developmental Disability Organization), and in her local Parish. Szot is also an adjunct professor for Fort Hays State University in the Special Education Graduate Program.

“It’s a privilege to have Dawn in our building,” said Tim Friess, principal at GBHS. “She is outstanding in everything that she does, and she does a tremendous amount of ‘everything.’ Her ability to put her students' needs, paras’ needs, department's needs, colleagues' needs, and parents' needs ahead of her own is a quality that most people cannot understand or emulate. Dawn is an amazing educator and an even more amazing person!”

The odds of big changes coming in math instruction for Great Bend Middle and Great Bend High School students: significant. A handful of math teachers from the two buildings attended Monday's USD 428 Board of Education meeting to discuss changes that will impact grades 7-12 beginning in the 2024-25 school year.

GBHS math teacher Daniel Schneider explained the problem. Right now, students are placed on an advanced math track entering seventh grade. Those students essentially take two years of math their seventh-grade year, all with the hopes of advancing to calculus by their senior year in high school. Schneider and other math teachers say moving that double-up year to 10th grade will help both students and middle school teachers.

"By only having the seventh standards instead of both seventh and eighth, you're looking at a reduction of about 32 percent of the curriculum load for those students and those teachers, which will allow middle school teachers time for enrichment, as well as intervention as needed," Schneider said.

Middle schools teaching students on the advanced track must cover 56 standards in the seventh-grade year alone. That stress would be alleviated if Algebra I was moved from GBMS to GBHS. Schneider said, based on 2021 state assessment scores, just 38 percent of the students in the advanced track were scoring at or above their grade level in math, while 61 percent were scoring below grade level. For the Class of 2018, 60 percent of incoming freshmen were part of the advanced track, yet only 39 percent of those students enrolled in calculus as seniors.

Middle school math teacher Peggy Haag said it can be difficult to judge how a sixth grader will perform in later years of education. Moving the double-up year from seventh to 10th grade gives the students more freedom to choose their path.

"Even though we have those good math kids, seventh grade is a big year," she said. "That is a huge transition year to come from elementary to middle school, and maturity may not always be there. They may be really great at math, but maybe they're not ready to handle two years in one year. Being able to push that back to sophomore year, when it's more their choice, they've had a year to get used to high school."

Haag added that taking out the pre-algebra class in seventh grade would allow middle school teachers to offer another elective that may shape a student's learning path. All agreed that the changes would not impact any student still wanting to enroll in Calculus as a high school credit, or College Algebra for a college credit, as a senior in high school

Monday's discussion was merely a first read in front of the board of education, which will take action on the matter at a future meeting.

Math teachers discuss grade 7-12 changes with USD 428

I always love the changing of the seasons, especially summer to fall. After the heat of the summer, the cool, crisp mornings and cooler days makes me happy. One of the first signs that I can tell that summer is on its way out is the first leaves on the cottonwood trees starting to turn yellow. The reds and oranges of the maples and oaks quickly follow suite. &nbsp;Although the New England states is the place to view the changing of the seasons, Kansas is no slouch. I found an article this week for you for the Horticulture Department about why trees change the colors they do and how you get the striking colors of fall.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Part of the allure of fall foliage is color variation. There are trees that turn red, purple, yellow, orange and brown.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Specific plant pigments determine individual colors. Foliage derives its normal green color from chlorophyll, the substance that captures the energy of the sun. Other pigments produce fall colors. Reds and purples are caused by anthocyanins, yellows by xanthophylls, and oranges by a combination of carotenes and xanthophylls. Browns are the result of tannins present in the leaf. Most of these substances are present throughout the growing season but are masked by the green color produced by chlorophyll. Anthocyanins are the exception and are produced after the chlorophyll is destroyed in the fall.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

If you have ever seen pictures of New England in the fall, you have probably wondered why trees in Kansas usually do not color as well. This difference is partly because of the tree species prevalent in New England. Certain oaks and maples naturally produce good color. Coloring also is influenced by the weather.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Warm, sunny days and cool nights are ideal for good color. The sunny days encourage photosynthesis and, thus, sugar accumulation in the leaves. As fall progresses, each leaf develops an abscission layer at the base of the petiole, or leaf stem, that prevents these sugars from being transported down the trunk to the roots for storage. This high sugar content in the leaves produces more intense colors. Cloudy days and warm nights prevent some of the sugar accumulation in the leaves and results in less vibrant colors.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Weather during other parts of the growing season also can have an effect. Heavy rains in the early spring or hot, dry weather during the summer can both have a deleterious effect on fall color.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

The length of time a tree maintains fall color also depends on weather. Reds, yellows and oranges are short-lived when trees undergo frosts and freezes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anthocyanins are the exception and are produced after the chlorophyll is destroyed in the fall.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If you have ever seen pictures of New England in the fall, you have probably wondered why trees in Kansas usually do not color as well. This difference is partly because of the tree species prevalent in New England. Certain oaks and maples naturally produce good color. Coloring also is influenced by the weather.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Warm, sunny days and cool nights are ideal for good color. The sunny days encourage photosynthesis and, thus, sugar accumulation in the leaves. As fall progresses, each leaf develops an abscission layer at the base of the petiole, or leaf stem, that prevents these sugars from being transported down the trunk to the roots for storage. This high sugar content in the leaves produces more intense colors. Cloudy days and warm nights prevent some of the sugar accumulation in the leaves and results in less vibrant colors.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Weather during other parts of the growing season also can have an effect. Heavy rains in the early spring or hot, dry weather during the summer can both have a deleterious effect on fall color.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The length of time a tree maintains fall color also depends on weather. BOOR: Fall colors

Things are getting a little spookier around Ellinwood, just in time for Halloween. The bad news is the Oct. 15 Haunted Tour of the Ellinwood Underground Tunnels is already overbooked, but Kelli Penner, general manager of the Tunnels, said another opportunity is coming in November.

"Our next one is a little different, too," she said. "It's the third Saturday of November, which is the 19th. It's actually a little earlier in the day. We had to move it up to 6:30 because we have an opportunity to bring paranormal investigators in, too. You can actually do a haunted tour, then pay to have tickets for the paranormal investigation."

The Historic Wolf Hotel has been busy with activities, from Sunday lunch on the third Sunday of each month, to the Haunted Tours, which tell some of the darker and scarier stories surrounding the tunnels.

"We do it as a lights-out tour, so you get that whole different aura and feeling of just being spooky," Penner said. "As far as what to expect, it's just us telling those stories and the things you don't hear from the employees that work here every day, and even paranormal groups that came in and those different experiences you don't hear from everybody. Some people don't want to talk about it."

Tickets are $20 for the tour and $50 for the Nov. 19 paranormal investigation, which will be conducted by a group from Wichita. Proceeds from that event will go towards the restoration of the tunnels. Trading his summer vacation for career exploration, Great Bend High School Senior Kevin Gonzalez attended the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in June. The nationally recognized honors program seeks to acknowledge high-achieving students for their dedication, talent, and leadership potential in medicine by engaging them in a meaningful career exploration program.

“It doesn’t matter what background you come from, or what you have or haven’t achieved,” said Gonzalez, “there’s still an opportunity to advance in your plans and reams if you follow your passion.”

Held virtually in 2022, the congress included a series of notable keynote speakers and numerous Nobel Prize winners, including Mario Capecchi, Ph.D. and 2007 Nobel Prize winner as the event’s grand master. In addition, breakout sessions allowed attendees from around the world to collaborate and converse with accomplished scientists, doctors, industry leaders, and their peers. Participants had the opportunity to view surgical procedures with the ability to submit questions for the surgeon to answer in real time.

Reflecting on the students he connected with from around the world, specifically mentioning attendees from China, Japan, Brazil, and the US, Gonzalez noted that they all had a shared focus and appreciation for the eye-opening opportunity in pursuit of their career goals.

Gonzalez plans to pursue a career in Biomedical Engineering and has already been admitted to the University of Kansas and Kansas State University. In February, he hopes to earn his Seal of Biliteracy in both Spanish and German.

As Gonzalez completes his career at GBHS, he is president of the Robotics Club, a board member for the Drama Club, member of National Honor Society, HOSA, Student Ambassadors, KAYS, Random Acts of Kindness (RAK), and a Junior Rotarian.

Despite continued drought and delays in fieldwork and fertilizer delivery, Kansas producers are no strangers to dusting in the next year’s wheat crop — planting behind failed fall crops, capitalizing on the smallest increments of rainfall and keeping their faith in the seeds going into the ground.

“There’s lots to worry about, and I haven’t figured out how I can affect any of it,” said Mike McClellan, who farms near Palco in Rooks County.

McClellan is just starting to plant wheat in mid-October. Everything seems to be behind this fall — a welcome little bit of rain last week greened the soybeans back up, delaying harvest, and the drought’s impact on the Mississippi River, making it hard to obtain needed fertilizer. He is trying to pre-purchase fertilizer and diesel but admits the totality of the drought, delays and increased input costs make him nervous.

USDA’s recent summary of the 2022 wheat crop was also not encouraging. In the Small Grains 2022 Summary released on September 30, USDA slashed Kansas wheat production to 244.2 million bushels, compared with 364 million bushels last year. As a result of the persistent drought, USDA reported 700,000 acres were planted to wheat, but not harvested, and yields plummeted to an average of 37 bushels per acre, well below 52 bushels per acre in 2021 and 45 bushels per acre in 2020.

And McClellan isn’t the only one feeling the effects of a delayed fieldwork at the start of this year’s growing season. For the week ending October 9, the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service reported half of the Kansas wheat crop has been planted, slightly behind the five-year average of 54%. Emergence, however, remains well behind at 19%, compared to 29% last year and 31% for the five-year average.

Brian Linin is one whose wheat has started to come up near Goodland, and he’s excited that he might get a good stand. After initially completing planting on his summer fallow ground last week, his crew noticed a field of not-so-great corn was a little wet following a rain a week ago, so he hopped back in the tractor and planted it to wheat.

“This may be our best field because we actually got moisture,” he said, noting that the extra field means his own acreage is now up for the year.

A lot of wheat is going into the ground in his area, thanks to higher prices and continued dry conditions that make wheat a more appealing planting option. While Linin is positive right now, he recognizes the drought is far from busted. For the last two years, his area has had a cumulative moisture deficit of 12 inches — which will make it hard on this year’s wheat crop, even with a good start.

The most recent NASS crop progress report also detailed the driving drought concerns. Topsoil moisture was rated at 81% very short to short. Even more concerning, subsoil moisture was rated at 86% very short to short.

Ron Suppes, who farms near Dighton, is particularly concerned about subsoil moisture. He just finished up wheat planting and estimated three-fourths of his crop will emerge, thanks to the dribbles of rain he received recently, but the remaining fourth will likely not come up. He questioned whether stands will have enough moisture underground to make it to the cooler temperatures that signal dormancy and sustain the crop through winter.

Only time will tell what Mother Nature has in store for this year’s growing season, but Kansas farmers continue to do what they do best — dust in the crop, pray for rain and hold out hope that next year’s harvest is better than the last.&nbsp;

Wheat Scoop: Kansas wheat producers plant with hope for moisture

School districts continue to handle threats with the utmost care, especially around the state with several incidents in the past two weeks. A Salina South student fired shots toward the building earlier this week, and a suspect was taken into custody in Ottawa this week after alleged threats of violence. A Garden City student was disciplined for having a gun on campus last week, and a Dodge City student was recently stabbed in the high school parking lot.

Thursday afternoon, USD 405 Lyons had to deal with its own threat. Superintendent Bill Day said the threat was vague and not necessarily directed at any school.

"We have a non-credible threat but a threat nonetheless," he said. "We're taking precautions and dealing with that according to state law and board policy. The situation has been completely handled - police involvement and the buildings are totally safe and secure."

The district shared a letter to parents regarding the incident Thursday afternoon on social media. The district will continue to monitor the situation.

If you have been saving up papers to properly shred and dispose of,
Friday, Oct. 14 is the day to get rid of those documents. Landmark National Bank in
Great Bend is hosting a free shred day on Friday to dispose of the public’s
personal documents. 
The service will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 1623 Main Street
location. Shawn Powelson with Landmark National Bank said turnout has been good
in the years past. "The turnout varies from year to year, and the weather drives it too," said Powelson. "We typically have a pretty good turnout, definitely from our core customers that are used to us doing it. There's always room for more." 
Anyone is allowed to make use of the free shred day on Friday, not just Landmark
customers. Participants will take their documents to be shredded through the
drive-through, and there is a limit of five boxes or bags per household.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

The City of Hoisington sent an alert to residents early Thursday morning
asking everyone to conserve water as much as possible until further notice. 
According to City Manager Jonathan Mitchell, there was an interruption in
electric service to one of the water wells causing the water pumped into town
to stop.

The request to conserve water was issued to prevent utilizing all the
water in storage. "To do our part, the city has shut off any sprinklers and shut off bulk water sells," said Mitchell. "We've contacted our largest volume users to ask for help. One of our industries has a special saw that takes water to cool it. We've asked them not to run that. There are a lot of people helping us get through this."

Hoisington staff has been working with the Kansas Department of Health and
Environment and local contractors to solve the
problem. 
Mitchell stated there is no threat to the water quality, but quantity issues
are the concern while the well is being fixed.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

🎙 Post Podcast: Cottonwood extension district offers tips for healthy aging

The research and work that has gone into the creation of a new group
daycare center in Great Bend has been extensive for well over a year. While
construction has yet to begin, the location of the daycare will be on the west
side of town, near 10th Street. 
Advancing Barton County Childcare, Inc., established by Great Bend Economic
Development, consists of an 11-member board of major employers, public
partners, school representatives and childcare specialists. 
The committee will ask for the Great Bend City Council’s approval next Monday night
for a conditional use permit for operating a group daycare center at 4507
Farmers Plaza Lane, just off 10th Street near the K-96
Highway intersection. The proposed name is Farmer's Plaza Childcare Center.

The daycare center will be off Coolidge Street and Farmers Plaza Lane, reducing the traffic compared to right off of 10th Street. 
Great Bend Economic Development received $435,000 from Barton County to help
start the projected $1.6 million project. In July, the committee announced
receiving a $500,000 grant from the Patterson Family Foundation. 
According to the group’s studies, there are approximately 700 spots needed for
childcare in Barton County beyond what is currently available. 
The daycare center is expected to serve up to 59 children. The new
childcare facility plans to provide elevated wages to keep the daycare staffed.
The average entry-level childcare worker in Barton County earns $9.40 an hour.
The new facility will start part-time help at $10.58 an hour. Lead teachers are
paid an average of $24,200 for an annual salary, but would get a $36,000 salary
plus benefits at the new daycare. 
The Great Bend Planning Commission considered the conditional use permit to
allow the operation of the daycare center in a C-2 (General Commercial) zone at
4507 Farmers Plaza and recommend approval. The city council will consider the
motion at the meeting on Monday, Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Aging brings on many changes as a person develops throughout the lifespan. The way in which you take care of yourself through the years both physically and mentally will impact the way in which you age. Many of our lifestyle behaviors and choices are integrated, thus there is a strong association between healthy lifestyles, prevention and longevity.

Keys to Embracing Aging is information that can be shared with a wide variety of audiences of any age. This program can be adapted and made fun for people of all ages and professions. For adolescents and young adults, this is a powerful lesson that can reinforce healthy behaviors and lifestyles over time to live longer and healthier lives. Middle aged adults may resonate with the information because they are today’s primary caregivers to aging parents. Middle aged adults are also facing increasing changes and challenges associated with their own aging process. Older adults will benefit because it is never too late to adapt healthy lifestyle behaviors. Groups of different generations may provide for some powerful discussion.

The Robert E. And Patricia Schmidt Foundation recently donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross to help support recovery efforts following Hurricane Ian.

The Red Cross has dispatched multiple vehicles, which will most likely be deployed for weeks, and the foundation's gift will help support the volunteers manning the vehicles and help restock supplies.

"Our hearts go out to those effected by this devastating storm," said Schmidt Foundation Chairman Gary Shorman, "and we offer our sincere thanks to the Red Cross for offering much-needed assistance during this recovery.

"The mission of the Red Cross is an admirable one, and we'd urge our communities to do what they can to help by donating."

Schmidt Foundation gift will aid Ian recovery efforts

The wholesome means of college athletics, as we once knew it, are gone.
That was a comment from Barton Community College Athletic Director Trevor Rolfs
at Tuesday’s Board of Trustees study session. 

Rolfs was asked to speak to the board
regarding college athletes’ ability to make money from their name, image and
likeness (NIL). NIL allows athletes to earn and accept payment for doing
endorsements, appearances and social media posts, and not violate collegiate
rules. 
Rolfs said Barton has not seen any instances of NIL deals with their athletes
yet, but imagined there are some junior colleges that have taken advantage of
the arrangement, just on a much smaller scale than NCAA Division I schools. "I'm not aware specifically of what school would be using it," said Rolfs. "I assume the football schools are using NIL to maybe capture a four- or five-star quarterback who was maybe academically ineligible at the NCAA level. That would just be a specific example where I could see that being utilized, but it's on a minute level." 
The NIL has existed just over a year, and Rolfs was concerned if the issue will
eventually turn into a Title IX legal matter, a law prohibiting sex-based
discrimination in schools that receive federal funding. "It's really putting a lot of athletic directors in a negative position," said Rolfs. "Many of them, like I do here, have their sights focused on facility upgrades and fundraising for facilities. Now, that's all being compounded by the need for NIL to keep up with the Joneses, so to speak." 
The National Junior College Athletic Association has partnered with Opendorse,
a company that helps students and colleges navigate through NIL opportunities.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

A routine weekend shopping trip proved to be anything but for several area residents Saturday evening at Walmart in Great Bend. Just after 7:30 p.m., 29-year-old Eric Keller just happened to be in the area and was able to provide life-saving CPR on a toddler before emergency personnel arrived. 

"Towards the back side of the store, someone yelled, 'Does anyone know CPR?'" Keller said. "I took a little certification class, which is great, but I never expected to use it. When you use it, you can't really unsee it. By the time I got to the little girl, her lips were already purple, and her face had pretty much drained of color."

The mother of the 23-month-old toddler, who wishes to remain anonymous, said her daughter suffered a fever spike while at the store, which caused a seizure. Bystanders told the mother to perform CPR while the child turned blue, and one bystander shouted for help from someone who knew CPR. 

Keller put down his own child and began administering CPR while the mother spoke to 911 on the phone. Dispatchers were able to remain on the line and assist with the situation for approximately four minutes before Great Bend Fire and EMS arrived.

"We were very fortunate he was there," the mother said. "If he weren't, she probably wouldn't have been okay."

Keller knew the Great Bend police officer who first arrived on the scene. He told the officer he wished to remain anonymous but would like to know how the little girl was doing. Keller said he was glad he took the CPR course on a whim and encourages others to do the same.

"It's a skill that a lot of people can learn and take advantage of," he said. "You never know when it's going to come in handy. At the end of the day, I just wanted to know that the little girl was all right. I didn't want to be recognized as the guy who got her to that point. The medics stepped in and did a great job of getting her to the hospital and taking care of her en route."

The mother had good news to report later in the week. The pair visited a family doctor Monday and again Tuesday, and the mother has plans to visit with a neurologist in the near future. She warned sudden medical emergencies can happen to anyone.

"I'm a young mom," she said. "I'm 24, and I didn't think it would happen to my child. No one ever warned me my baby could have a seizure and stop breathing, so I want people to be aware and know it can happen. I am so grateful he was there to help, and I urge all parents to learn CPR. You never know when it will come in handy."
