CAMPBELL: Cover crop response to herbicides

Barton Community College introduced their new Academic Integrity
Ambassadors at last week’s Board of Trustees study session. The group of six students will be the face of academic honesty at Barton. 
Barton reported 122 XF grades in the 2018-2019 academic year. The XF is a
letter grade usually associated with students that are caught performing acts
of academic dishonesty, or cheating. 
Barton Director of Student Academic Development Stephanie Joiner said the six
students chosen as ambassadors represent honesty, trust, responsibility,
respect, fairness and courage. "The ambassadors were nominated by faculty and staff on all of our campuses," said Joiner. "I had the privilege of meeting them last week to get to know them." 
After 2018, Barton revamped their Academic Integrity Council that works with
students on academic honesty through awareness, presentations and discussions.
In 2022, the college reported seven XF grades. 
The ambassador students will be assisting with student presentations during
Barton’s Academic Integrity Week Oct. 17 - Oct. 21.

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (10/14 - 10/16)

Wildlife on the roads is just a part of driving in Kansas. It's an even bigger risk each fall as deer begin to migrate more. Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir is anticipating another busy season for deer-related accidents.

"Typically, there are a couple of things that cause it," he said. "They're going into rut, which they lose their minds. The other thing is you're getting a lot of milo and corn harvested, and we're disturbing their habitat."

There are ways to minimize risk and injury on the road. Bellendir reminds drivers to wear their seat belts and follow the posted speed limit. If one deer is visible, others are likely in the area. Braking upon impact with a deer can force the front of the vehicle closer to the ground, increasing the likelihood the deer will come through the windshield. Swerving to miss a deer can result in an accident that causes more damage and injury than hitting a deer. In general, Bellendir reminds drivers to be alert and keep their eyes on the road, especially when driving at dawn or dusk.

"Be extremely cautions traveling early in the morning or at dusk," he said. "We'll be working car and deer accidents from now until December. Hunting season opens, too. That opens here in a few weeks, and that will stir them up again, too."

The deer rut season typically runs from October through December. According to Kansas Highway Patrol, if you hit a deer, pull over onto the shoulder and turn on your emergency flashers. Do not attempt to remove a deer from the roadway unless you are sure it is dead.

ELLSWORTH COUNTY—Seven people were injured in an accident just after noon Sunday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Infiniti QX60 driven by Kayla D. TImms, 34, Ellsworth, was southbound on K141. 

The driver failed to stop at stop sign at the Kansas 4 Junction and struck a westbound 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 driven by Tucker T.&nbsp;Loesch, 15, Hoisington.

EMS transported Timms, two children in the Infiniti&nbsp; and a 15-year-old Great Bend boy in the GMC to Salina Regional Health Center. EMS transported a fourth passenger in the Infiniti Levi C&nbsp;Schneider, 30, Kanopolis, to the hospital in Lindsborg.

EMS transported Loesch and a teen passenger in the GMC to the hospital in McPherson. Two other children in the Infiniti were not injured.

 A teen in the Infiniti and another in the pickup were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

The result of the discussion was that staff concluded that certain circumstances might justify permitting of such kennel businesses in residential districts. A motion will be made to allow for a conditional use permit to be issued for a dog boarding kennel in an R-1 zone.

&nbsp; &nbsp;5. Conditional Use Permit for a Dog Boarding Kennel &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; A motion to adopt a resolution for a conditional use permit for a dog boarding kennel at 5908 Broadway.

&nbsp; &nbsp;7. Temporary Premise Extension &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Dry Lake Brewing has requested a temporary extension of premise on Oct. 29 to host a Halloween party. A motion will be made to close the alley from Lakin Avenue to Forest Avenue and closure of parking stalls on city-owned parking lot at Lakin and Williams on Oct. 29 from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m.

&nbsp; &nbsp;8. Ordinance Limiting Living in Recreation Vehicles to Campgrounds and RV Parks &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Existing ordinances could be interpreted to prohibit the use of an RV parked on a lot as a residence. However, they do not clearly do so. A motion will be made to limit living in recreational vehicles to campgrounds and RV parks.

&nbsp; &nbsp;9. Annexation of Cambridge Development &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Housing Opportunities, Inc. (HOI) is the sole owner of approximately 24 acres south of Walmart. It has been working with the Planning Commission to rezone the property to a planned unit development. HOI has requested to connect the anticipated development into the city's sanitary sewer. The governing body approved the connection to the sanitary sewer, conditioned upon HOI requesting annexation. HOI has requested annexation. A motion will be made to approve annexing certain lands adjoining the corporate city limits.

&nbsp; &nbsp;10. City Attorney / Prosecutor Contract &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; For the past year, the city has contracted with Watkins Calcara for attorney &amp; prosecutor services. The current agreement is based on 40 hours a month for attorney and 40 hours a month for prosecutor. The base fee for services is $14,000 per month, with additional hours billed at $200 an hour. The city wants a more full-time presence. Following overtures to Allen Glendenning for a full-time position, a new contract has been proposed. Allen will serve as city attorney/prosecutor, the fee will remain at $14,000 per month, Watkins Calcara will provide workers comp and other applicable insurance and the city will continue to provide a legal staff position to assist. The term of the new agreement is for three years ending Nov. 2025.

&nbsp; &nbsp;11. 2023 Health Insurance Options &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Following the Sept. 19 council meeting, the city reached out to Humana, Aetna, United Healthcare and Cigna and received no response. Julie Yarmer with Freedom Claims Management contacted the city about their services. The city contacted Mike Minton to discuss options and he will present options too.

The result of the discussion was that staff concluded that certain circumstances might justify permitting of such kennel businesses in residential districts. A motion will be made to allow for a conditional use permit to be issued for a dog boarding kennel in an R-1 zone.&nbsp; &nbsp;5. Conditional Use Permit for a Dog Boarding Kennel &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; A motion to adopt a resolution for a conditional use permit for a dog boarding kennel at 5908 Broadway.&nbsp; &nbsp;6. Abatements&nbsp; &nbsp;7. Temporary Premise Extension &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Dry Lake Brewing has requested a temporary extension of premise on Oct. 29 to host a Halloween party. A motion will be made to close the alley from Lakin Avenue to Forest Avenue and closure of parking stalls on city-owned parking lot at Lakin and Williams on Oct. 29 from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m.&nbsp; &nbsp;8. Ordinance Limiting Living in Recreation Vehicles to Campgrounds and RV Parks &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Existing ordinances could be interpreted to prohibit the use of an RV parked on a lot as a residence. However, they do not clearly do so. A motion will be made to limit living in recreational vehicles to campgrounds and RV parks.&nbsp; &nbsp;9. Annexation of Cambridge Development &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Housing Opportunities, Inc. (HOI) is the sole owner of approximately 24 acres south of Walmart. It has been working with the Planning Commission to rezone the property to a planned unit development. HOI has requested to connect the anticipated development into the city's sanitary sewer. The governing body approved the connection to the sanitary sewer, conditioned upon HOI requesting annexation. HOI has requested annexation. A motion will be made to approve annexing certain lands adjoining the corporate city limits.&nbsp; &nbsp;10. City Attorney / Prosecutor Contract &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; For the past year, the city has contracted with Watkins Calcara for attorney &amp; prosecutor services. The current agreement is based on 40 hours a month for attorney and 40 hours a month for prosecutor. The base fee for services is $14,000 per month, with additional hours billed at $200 an hour. The city wants a more full-time presence. Following overtures to Allen Glendenning for a full-time position, a new contract has been proposed. Allen will serve as city attorney/prosecutor, the fee will remain at $14,000 per month, Watkins Calcara will provide workers comp and other applicable insurance and the city will continue to provide a legal staff position to assist. The term of the new agreement is for three years ending Nov. 2025.&nbsp; &nbsp;11. 2023 Health Insurance Options &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Following the Sept. 19 council meeting, the city reached out to Humana, Aetna, United Healthcare and Cigna and received no response. The
drought monitor report as of Tuesday, October 1, indicates almost all of our
area still in extreme drought, including all of Barton County.&nbsp; Exceptional drought is continuing to expand.&nbsp; The six to ten-day outlook (October 18 to 22)
indicates near normal temperatures to slightly below normal temperatures and 50
to 60% chance of below normal precipitation.&nbsp;
Normal isn’t much but at least we should have seasonal temperatures.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (October 20
to 26) indicates a 50 to 60% chance of above normal temperatures and a 33 to
40% chance of below normal precipitation.&nbsp;
Not a promising outlook.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Today, it’s been a while since this
column has taken stock of where the area ag community is at.&nbsp; So, where are we?

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We
are all aware of how dry it is and that the near-term outlook isn’t good
through December.&nbsp; This has definitely
sped up the harvest of what fall crops are there to be harvested.&nbsp; With the rains the area received a while back
and in some fallow fields, wheat that was planted has come up.&nbsp; However, the outlook isn’t promising for good
root and tiller establishment and for a greater chance of winter kill if we
don’t receive moisture for the crop.&nbsp; 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Fall
crop harvest is proceeding rapidly for several reasons.&nbsp; First, with the heat and lack of moisture,
the crop matured and dried down rapidly.&nbsp;
Second, in many harvested fields, especially dryland, yields were below
average so it took less time.&nbsp; Three,
fields were abandoned due to a lack of grain or beans.&nbsp; Some of these fields were swathed for hay,
even some soybean fields.&nbsp; Even many
irrigated field yields are below average with temperatures well above normal as
the result of accelerated grain fill.&nbsp;
When all is said and done, average harvested yields may not look as bad
as we thought but we need to look at abandoned acres or those cut for hay for a
real idea of how bad the year was or wasn’t.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; You
may have noticed lots of swathing and baling or everything from wheat straw and
corn/milo stubble to soybean, dried out rangeland grasses, ditches and fields
of pigweed.&nbsp; Area cattle producers are
short of hay period and not just average to good quality hay but hay
period.&nbsp; Available range for grazing is
short and many produces pasture wheat from now until early spring on wheat,
rye, and triticale which as of now is sketchy at best except under
irrigation.&nbsp; So, people needing hay are
baling whatever they can.&nbsp; They can
ammoniate something like wheat straw to help its feed value.&nbsp; Or mix these less desirable emergency feeds
with decent hay.&nbsp; In some cases, checking
for nitrates is definitely in order.&nbsp;
Some are turning out cattle onto any stubble they can find.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; One
other issue for cattle producers around the state is more and more are having
to haul water where they hadn’t before.&nbsp;
For some, it’s creating a real hardship due to distance and location. 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally,
these conditions should cause everyone to pay attention to potential wildfire
conditions as winds typically pick up throughout the winter.&nbsp; And wind erosion of soil is also a potential
significant problems that have been worked and planted to wheat.

Barton Ag Instructor Dr. Vic Martin - Catching Up – Fall 2022

The Office of the State Fire Marshal awarded much needed funds to 89 fire departments in Kansas through the Kansas Firefighter Recruitment and Safety Grant Program, totally $1.3 million. Ellinwood Fire Department, Ellsworth Fire Department and the Wilson Fire Department were among the departments to receive grants.

The OSFM made this grant possible through its budget passed by the State Legislature and signed by Governor Laura Kelly. This year, an additional $1.2 million was made available to OSFM for this grant by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Along with $100,000 provided through our budget, the 2023 KFRSG had a total of $1.3 million to disburse.

This year, over $2.4 million was requested by 97 volunteer/part-time fire departments in Kansas for safety gear, washer/extractor machines and junior firefighter programs. Departments received close to $1.2 million to be used for safety gear, $106,000 for 20 washer/extractor machines, and $1,200 for the junior firefighter programs. Due to the high number of requests, OSFM will be requesting the 2023 Legislature continue funding this important grant.

“Every year, we see an increase in requests for this grant,” Doug Jorgensen, State Fire Marshal, said. “This year was unique, in that, we had the extra dollars from ARPA. The funding will go a long way in providing these smaller, but vital departments with the gear and equipment they need to continue keeping their communities safe.”&nbsp;

Volunteer and part-time fire departments face recruitment and retention challenges because they do not have the funding to provide safety equipment. Without new equipment provided by the recruiting fire department, potential volunteers are faced with not only donating their time but also providing their own safety gear, sharing gear with others, or doing without. There is also a proven increase in cancer diagnoses for firefighters, which can be caused by prolonged exposure to carcinogens, particulates, and biohazards. The proper gear, regular cleaning of that gear and equipment, along with preventative healthcare is crucial for a firefighter’s health and well-being.

Central Kansas Christian Academy in Great Bend recently received a grant for over $2,000 to upgrade the white boards in all their classrooms. 

After more than a decade since the original boards were purchased, they were showing their age. The CKCA Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF) issued a grant to purchase a durable overlay material to give the school a fresh start and buy several more years until they need to be replaced fully. The grant also included professional installation. 

The PTF group raises money throughout the year through two main fundraisers - a Chili Feed, which is coming up on Oct. 27, and by selling butter braids in the winter. Those funds are then used to provide educational enhancement grants for teachers and students, for projects or trainings not covered in the normal operating budget.

A complaint was made to code enforcement about a trailer in the side yard of a property being used as a residence for a family member. When the city code enforcement officer contacted the owner, he came before the Great Bend City Council a few weeks ago and argued that the existing ordinances and regulation do no prohibit the use of an RV as a residence.

Since then, the city clerk and the zoning enforcement officer have received complaints about new instances of RVs being set up to be used as residences.&nbsp;

The use of RVs in this manner creates problems and potential problems with the esthetics of the neighborhoods, the stringing of cables and hoses across yards and creates enforcement issues with other regulations such as zoning regulations prohibiting more than one residence on a lot.

Since the issue is not clear, the city is presenting an ordinance to clearly state that this is not permitted. Those uses already existing as of Oct. 1, 2022, are grandfathered in.

A look at the annual Wild Game Feed at Cedar Bluff

Twenty-nine years ago,&nbsp;two of my husband’s hunting buddies hatched an&nbsp;idea to make room in their wild game freezers as hunting seasons&nbsp;peaked&nbsp;and enjoy family and friends&nbsp;at the same time. They called&nbsp;their brainstorm&nbsp;the Wild Game Feed and invited guests to bring wild game or side dishes to one of the cabins at Cedar Bluff on an early October Saturday. Thus began a tradition all of us look forward to every year.

Hunting, fishing, camping, boating, birding, metal detecting, gardening, and ranching&nbsp;topics&nbsp;weave in and out of conversations.&nbsp;Sit back,&nbsp;listen,&nbsp;and learn about reloading, choosing better camo&nbsp;and boots, preferred arrows and bows, the best bait to use at a particular fishing spot, where to see sandhill cranes or eagles, gardening techniques, who got a new metal detector and what they’re finding, and who’s the best jokester in the group.&nbsp;As stories follow one after another,&nbsp;worn out&nbsp;kids and grandkids pop onto soft&nbsp;laps&nbsp;while other&nbsp;zip&nbsp;by&nbsp;to&nbsp;remind us how glad we are that they&nbsp;happily play&nbsp;outdoors and make&nbsp;new friends.

Since it’s a wild game feed,&nbsp;methods&nbsp;to cook deer, elk, antelope, rabbit, turtle, snake, turkey, pheasant, duck, goose, dove, quail,&nbsp;and other&nbsp;critters&nbsp;turn into animated&nbsp;discussions. Over time, the cooks’&nbsp;skills &nbsp;evolved&nbsp;from basic grilling to gourmet dishes&nbsp;involving pasta, sun dried tomatoes, and fresh sage. I’ve never been fond of duck, but one of the original members has perfected his preparation and cooking&nbsp;so&nbsp;that his duck kebabs disappear as fast as he makes them. He’s also tweaked a twice baked deer steak that&nbsp;vanishes the minute he&nbsp;sets&nbsp;the serving dish on the&nbsp;crowded&nbsp;table. If you come late, you miss out. He’s secretive about his recipes but makes it clear preparing the game prior to cooking is&nbsp;key&nbsp;to his success. Several favorite cooks have mastered marinades that make&nbsp;spectacular&nbsp;dishes. A few years ago, a&nbsp;culinary magazine&nbsp;writer joined the festivities and put together an article&nbsp;featuring&nbsp;the Game Feed.&nbsp;

You can’t have dinner without dessert and this crowd makes sure those are memorable. We expect the best ever cowboy cookies, homemade pies from fresh-picked cherries, huckleberry cheese cake, huckleberry crunch, brownies, chocolate cakes,&nbsp;fruit&nbsp;cobblers, and more. The dessert table is a diabetic’s nightmare.

More than anything, this is a gathering of new and old friends who love the outdoors. They’ve found a way to celebrate their common passion that doesn’t require loved ones to dress in camo and sneak silently into a deer tree or goose blind before morning light. It’s become such a tradition that we leave saying,&nbsp;“See you next year.”&nbsp;Many thanks to Steve and Rick who started this.

MADORIN: A good idea gets better with time

Hoisington High School crowned their Homecoming King and Queen prior to a home football game on Sept. 30.

Addy Mason was voted Homecoming queen and Kanye Cross was chosen as the king.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas woman died in an accident just after noon Saturday in Sedgwick County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a white Chevy pickup was eastbound on Kansas 96 just west of 279th Street in lane one.

The pickup moved into lane two, causing a 2007 Harley Davidson&nbsp;Electra Glide Ultra Classic driven by Ann Marie&nbsp;Tournear, 43, Great Bend, in lane two to make an avoidance maneuver from lane two in an attempt to avoid a collision. 

Tournear lost control of the motorcycle, causing it to roll and strike a 2021 Harley Davidson Road Glide driven by Gregory L&nbsp;Tournear, 47, Great Bend.

EMS transported Ann Marie Tournear to St. Francis where she died. Gregory Tournear was not injured. Both were wearing helmets, according to the KHP.

The accident remains under investigation.

Great Bend woman dies after motorcycles collide

House fires cause an average of 2,620 civilian deaths each year; 500 of those being children under the age of 14. MPIRE Properties is doing its part to reduce that number.

One of the state’s leading rental companies for single family homes and multi-family apartment complexes is making an investment in improving housing safety in the Great Bend community by donating smoke detectors to the sixth-grade students, as a part of Fire Prevention Week.

“We do property inspections all the time, helping our tenants stay safe in their homes with the proper number and placement of smoke detectors,” Alan Burton, CFO, said. “I’ve seen firsthand how quickly a fire can start and escalate out of control, so this is our way of not only educating kids on the importance of fire safety, but also possibly saving a life at some point in the future.”

Homes with smoke alarms have almost half as many fire-related deaths compared with homes without smoke alarms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Students filled out forms indicating if they had fire prevention methods in their homes. If they don't have working smoke detectors, MPIRE Properties provides them to those households.

Burton, Jason Mayers, Owner, and Mikayla Bownes, Property Manager, along with the City of Great Bend’s Fire Inspector Mike Smith, and USD 428’s Superintendent Khris Thexton, are set to present the life-saving devices during special Fire Prevention Week assemblies.

The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation staff members who participated in a recent conference are incorporating the information they learned into their regular interaction with clients, said Julie Kramp, executive director.

The gathering was hosted by the Association of Community Mental Health Centers of Kansas at Wichita.

“This conference was important for multiple reasons,” Kramp said. “It provided our healthcare staff with information about evidence-based practices, and new methods and technologies.

“It also was an opportunity to network with peers from all across Kansas. This leads to the exchange of ideas, while inspiring us to refresh and recharge. This was the first time since the pandemic that we have been able to interact with other professionals in our field. It meant a lot to all of us.”

The most important aspect, Kramp noted, is The Center’s clients benefit from the new information.

“When staff members sharpen their skills and increase their knowledge, our clients directly benefit,” she explained. “With new and innovative resources, staff members have more tools and greater confidence in their ability to serve.”

Conference topics included: the influence of social media on mental health; substance use treatment; mobile crisis; and ethics.

There also was up-to-date information about the status of the state’s plan to implement a new mental-health model by July 2024. It is called the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic model.

Thirty-one staff members from the four counties The Center serves attended the gathering and are sharing the new information with colleagues.

Participants in the 43rd annual conference included therapists; case managers; a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner; advanced practice registered nurse; program development director; financial officer; and other leadership-team members.

The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation is a Community Mental Health Center serving Barton, Pawnee, Rice and Stafford counties. The Center staff gather new information at statewide conference

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache.  </figure>The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache.  <li>Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Water contact should be avoided.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Do not allow pets to eat dried algae.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>
 </ul>A&nbsp;Watch status&nbsp;means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.&nbsp;During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:&nbsp;<ul>
 <li>Signage will be posted at all public access locations.&nbsp;</li><li>Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.&nbsp;</li><li>Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.&nbsp;</li><li>Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.&nbsp;</li><li>Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.&nbsp;</li>

 <li>Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.&nbsp;</li>
 </ul>KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp;If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Eagle Radio's News Week in Review

Another season of prep hoops is just around the corner. Ellinwood's Brit Dutton is ending some of the drama early. Earlier this week, the senior made a verbal commitment to continue his basketball career next season at The University of Illinois-Springfield (UIS).

Dutton learned of the school - located eight hours away from home and three hours from Chicago - from Ellinwood High School coach Derek Joiner, who coached with current UIS coach Matt Brock at Pittsburg State. Brock eventually asked Dutton to make an official visit, and Dutton liked what he saw.

"All the coaches were real nice," he said. "I feel like they all are good coaches and know what they're doing. I like the team, like the facilities, the school. It seems like a real nice area."

The Prairie Stars finished at 12-17 last year in Brock's fourth season with the program. This year's squad will be relatively young with just three seniors, but Dutton is still ready to battle for a starting spot next year.

"It's college basketball, and it's the next-highest level you can go," he said. "I'm still able to play basketball, which is ultimately what I wanted to do."

 </figure>But first things first, Dutton still has a season left at Ellinwood. The Eagles finished last year at 20-3, and are 56-13 in Dutton's first three seasons. But the team has yet to make it to the state tournament"Our expectation every year has been to make it to state," Dutton said. "Hopefully this year we're able to make it happen. We're all going to work hard, have to be leaders, and just get it done this year."Last February, Dutton surpassed 1,400 career points at Ellinwood to break the school's previous scoring record set in 1986. He scored 43 points in a win against Ness City as a sophomore, then set the school's individual-game record with a 48-point night last December. He scored 63 points in the first two games of his junior year to become just the third EHS player to reach 1,000 career points. Heading into his final season, Dutton has four of Ellinwood's top-five single-game scoring performances."We knew as Brit was growing up he was going to have an impact on our program," Joiner said. "We were also fortunate to have other good players, along with quality parents, to pair with him. We've been ranked all three of his first seasons, the No. 1 seed in substate all three years, and currently on something like a 20-game league winning streak."I would say our program has faired well during his time here so far. It's hard to believe it's his last season already. I'm sure the league opponents don't feel that way. They probably feel like he's been here forever because he's had an impact from his freshman year on."<figure>

 </figure>Last season Dutton paced the Eagles at 24.4 points and 2.5 steals a night. His 3.6 assists a game were second on the team but included some highlight-worthy gems. Dutton shot 54 percent from the floor, including 40 percent from behind the arc, and he was an 80-percent shooter from the foul stripe.That complete game, complete with a good handle, is why Joiner thinks Dutton has what it takes to succeed at the next level."The college game and the game of basketball is valuing skill more and more, and Brit is flush with skill," Joiner said. "Brit has attributes that translate well to the next level. Number one, Brit can really shoot. He has the ballhandling skills to deal with the athletic ability of the next level. "What I think sets him apart from a lot of high school kids when it comes to a college skill is Brit's ability to finish 10 feet and in. He can finish with either hand. He can use the floater. He can use the pull-up. He can jump off either leg. So, Brit is more equipped than most to deal with the 6-8 kids on the help side that he will see at the collegiate level. Brit can also play the one or the two so that versatility is a plus for him."Dutton is the son of Meredith Joiner and Jeremy Dutton. The Eagles open the 2022-23 high school season on Dec. 2 with a home game against LaCrosse.
