It's not all about the birds. Right now, it's deer archery season until the end of the year. But few things draw a crowd like opening day of pheasant and quail season. Saturday was opening day around Kansas. Best Western Angus Inn General Manager Lacey Schofield has now been a part of 16 opening days at the hotel, and says the boom in the economy is always huge.

"The contributions these hunters make to our economy, I just don't think everybody understands the impact of it, with what they spend not just at the hotels - because they're usually here 2-4 nights - you're talking meals, fuel, necessities at the grocery store, liquor stores," she said. "The amount of revenue on sales tax and the occupancy or bed tax, the impact is huge."

Even with COVID-19 the past few years, and then environmental conditions taking their toll on bird numbers, Schofield said the number of hunters really does not change from year to year. The number peaks on opening weekend, dips during the season, then spikes again as the season comes to a close in January. 

"They still come because it's a like a group/family/friends trip they make," she said. "With the way the pheasants are, they'll still come, they just might not stay as long, but the amount of hunters I get for that initial opening weekend is usually pretty consistent."

Last month, Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Manager Jason Wagner reported pheasant numbers were down about 19 percent from the year before statewide, but up 49 percent locally. Kansas Game Warden Brian Hanzlick saw some of that on the first weekend.

"More hunters than expected," Hanzlick said."I think our bird numbers were up a little bit. Our drought conditions and lack of habitat have pushed everybody to certain spots in our walk-in hunting areas, and some of our private areas."

Hanzlick reminded hunters to make sure they have proper licensing before hunting, and to ask permission from landowners before hunting on private property. Pheasant and quail season runs through Jan. 31, 2023.

Opening day of pheasant season makes big impact on Barton Co. economy

On Thursday, Nov. 10, at approximately 2:06 p.m., officers from the Great Bend Police Department responded to 3322 B Railroad Avenue in reference to the execution of a search warrant stemming from an ongoing investigation involving drug trafficking in Great Bend. 

Upon arrival, four subjects were located inside the residence and detained. During a search of the residence, methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were located. 

Shirley Burrow, age 45, was placed under arrest for distribution of methamphetamine stemming from the ongoing investigation. 

Additionally, Burrow was placed under arrest for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and no drug tax stamp. Burrow was also booked on four outstanding Barton County District Court warrants. 

Jordan Daniels, age 32, was placed under arrest for possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and no drug tax stamp.

Officers also responded to 218 Pine Street in reference to the execution of a search warrant stemming from the ongoing investigation involving drug trafficking in Great Bend. 

Upon arrival, officers located and detained three subjects on the property. During a search of the residence, methamphetamine, opiates and drug paraphernalia were located.

Charles Rowe, Jr., age 35, was booked on two additional counts of distribution of methamphetamine stemming from this investigation. Additionally, Charles Rowe, Sr., age 57; and Savannah Bradshaw, age 28, were all placed under arrest for possession of methamphetamine, possession of opiates, possession of drug paraphernalia and no drug tax stamp. 

These investigations are still ongoing. Anyone with any information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Great Bend Police Department or Crime Stoppers.

Several arrests made in Great Bend drug trafficking case

The American Red Cross will honor Eric Keller for his heroic acts at Walmart with a Lifesaving Award.

In October 2022, Keller performed CPR on a toddler at Walmart.&nbsp; What was supposed to be a normal day of grocery shopping,&nbsp;&nbsp;turned into a moment of courageous action to save a life.&nbsp;

“Eric was in the right place at the right time. Fortunately, he knew that emergencies can happen to anyone at any time and his prior CPR training gave him the skills to respond when the plea for help occurred. Not all heroes wear capes but Eric will certainly be a hero to this young child forever.” said Jane Blocher, Red Cross Greater Kansas Chapter Executive Director. "The Red Cross teaches first aid, CPR, and other response skills&nbsp;so you can help, too, because, in an emergency, help can't wait."

Keller will be honored and presented a Lifesaving Award, on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. at Walmart,&nbsp;3503 10th&nbsp;St. where the event occurred.

Great Bend native to be honored for lifesaving deed at Walmart

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas notes that some drivers may find themselves unexpectedly at the side of the road over the next several days.

"Unfortunately, if you haven't had your car serviced and gotten it ready for winter, you could experience a dead battery, or just other issues that can relate to car maintenance this time of year. Batteries are a big issue that we see, in terms of our roadside service calls in the winter. Even at 32 degrees, a battery is 35% weaker and at 0 degrees, a car's battery loses about 60% of its strength."

The life span for car batteries is well less than the life of the rest of the car.

"Typically a battery is going to last three to five years," Steward said. "If your battery is in that age range, you should definitely get it in and get that charge tested, so it can be there to help you out when you need it on the coldest mornings."

It's also important to have what you need in the vehicle with you in case you break down and have to stay with your car.

"It's a really great idea, especially in the winter, to travel with an emergency kit," Steward said. "Kind of anticipate what you would need to stay safe and warm, should you have a breakdown in your vehicle and have to wait for a while for help. More than 40% of motorists don't carry an emergency kit in their vehicle. Put together a box or a plastic tub of items. Make sure you have your cell phone properly charged and carry a charger with you."

· Non-perishable snacks for both human and pet passengers

· Bag of abrasive material (sand, salt, cat litter) or traction mats

· Extra warm clothing (coat, gloves, hats, scarves)

· Basic toolkit (screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrench)

Bad weather and sloppy road conditions are a factor in nearly half a million crashes and more than 2,000 road deaths every winter in the United States.

The Heisman winner is usually the most talented college football player in the nation. Heisman High School Scholarship winners are a different story. One hundred high school seniors - one male and one female from each state - were awarded at least a $1,000 scholarship with the opportunity for more money at the national level. Ellinwood senior Asher Miller was named a finalist for the state scholarship.

"I'm hoping to go to either KU, K-State, or Wichita State and go into biomedical engineering," Miller said. "Every little thing is appreciated, no matter from the smallest scholarship to the largest. It's nice to not have to pay that much in student loans."

To be eligible for the scholarship, seniors must maintain a 3.0 grade-point average or better, be proven leaders within their school and community, and must have participated in a recognized sporting event in grades 9-11. 

Miller, the son of Martin and Angela Miller, played basketball and ran cross country and track. He qualified for state three times as a cross country runner, winning a state medal as a top-20 finisher as a junior. He's also qualified for two state track meets and brought home a state medal as a top-eight finisher.

Outside of sports, Miller has participated in the Rake and Run, volunteered as a stage crew for some of the school's productions, and assisted older members of the community.

Of the 100 state scholarship winners, one male and one female from each of six geographic regions move on to a national competition. Each of those finalists will receive $2,000, and one male and one female will each win $10,000 as the national winner.

Tuesday's Weather

It's an oft-used movie line, but it still rings true: if you build it, they will come. Monday night, the USD 428 Board of Education approved up to $2 million in renovations to the track and turf at Great Bend High School. The vote not only replaces facilities in desrepair and need of replacement, but updates to the facilities will likely help the district host other marquee events like a track and field regional.

The cost just to repair the surface of the track and turf comes in just shy of $1 million. The board approved an additional $1 million in contingencies and upgrades. The track bed alone could cost upwards of $500,000 to repair.

"The one thing we really don't know for sure is the track and the base of the track," said Assistant Superintendent John Popp. "We're pretty confident, with the size of the cracks in the track, we're going to have to go down beyond just the coating. We're going to have to go down and maybe even have to do some foundation work on the track, take it clear down and build it back up."

One upgrade to the facility will be turfing over the current high jump pit on the south end of the football field. The entire area on the north end, known as the D Zone, will be covered with track material at a cost of approximately $260,000. That will open up the facility to larger meets like regionals.

"(Coach Lyles Lashley has) been real leery of hosting a regional track meet at that venue," said Activities Director Matt Westerhaus. "Having that would, he's all on board with hosting a regional track meet. If you know Coach Lashley and what he does to prepare for invitational and regional cross country, he's on board for hosting as much as he possibly can at this venue."

Another upgrade will be the installation of Cushdrain beneath the turf. The elastic pad has a 25-year warranty and improves a field's drainage and shock absorption, which is helpful for longevity and safety. 

"We have earmarked pretty much $2 million to replace this turf and track for a while now," said Popp. "If we get at that $2 million mark and still get the D Zone and the Cushdrain and some of these other things in, we're going to feel really good about that."

Texas-based Hellas Construction has installed turf in some of the most famous facilities in the nation, and Great Bend Rec has used the company on its recent projects. Hellas will do the work at Memorial Stadium with a start date after graduation in May, and a finish date by Aug. 1, 2023.

Early renditions of the overhaul show a bi-color football field with the paw at the center of the field replaced by the GBHS panther logo. The end zones are black with red letters and white outlines. The track will be red with black exchange zones so runners can better see the boundaries. 

With construction to begin just after the school year, the facilities will be closed for much of the summer. The board agreed the facilities would remain open to the public once work is complete.

"We always keep it open," said Superintendent Khris Thexton. "We know it's a piece of the community, and the community uses it and will have access to it. You can't not go by that high school and see somebody either on the track or turf, which is fine."

The overhaul of the track will include new surfaces on the jumping and pole vault runways behind the main bleachers. The board will look into filling some of that space in with concrete or using the old turf to cover gravel areas. The board also discussed recycling some of the old turf on elementary school playgrounds. 

Additional upgrades for the new project may include new goal posts and electrical conduits at select locations around the turf. The track was last replaced in 2004, and the turf was last replaced in 2008

"Anytime anybody says they can't believe it's been 14 years, they're shocked," Thexton said. "A lot of that has to do with Cody (Schmidt) and his staff, putting a lot of time into it, keeping it groomed and taken care of. It's not without a lot of effort to keep it up."

The story of Laundry Love began with T-Bone, a gentleman living in Ventura California. The mission of Laundry Love is to wash the clothes and bedding of low/no income families and individuals. Laundry Love exists to help prevent physical and emotional strain that poor health and hygiene places on the under-resourced in our community.

United Way of Central Kansas brought this program to Great Bend in August and so far has helped more than 50 families and provided nearly 240 loads of laundry.

Funds for up to 5 loads of laundry per family as well as all supplies needed are provided this month by Stueder Contractors. Come down to Discount Laundry, 924 Jefferson Street, on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. (last load in at 1:30).

United Way of Central Kansas hosting Laundry Love this Saturday

In late November of 1996, we moved to a rural property on a limestone hilltop west of Ellis. By the time we got into the house, leaves swirled about the yard, hinting at greenery we could expect to see once spring arrived. A deep draw filled with standing and fallen trees as well as lots of bushes ran into Big Creek west of the house. I impatiently awaited warm weather and longer days to see what grew in that wildlife-rich habitat. I loved discovering not only ash, hackberry, cottonwood, and cedar trees, but also chokecherry bushes and wild grape vines filled that drainage. Over time, thick vines had climbed so high into the trees that birds had far greater odds of harvesting grapes than we did. Though our soil appeared rocky and barren, in reality, it suited wild grapes perfectly. It made me wonder how a vineyard would do in this region.

Apparently, others shared my question. A decade later, a Wakeeney/Voda farm family with necessary skills and resources saw potential in raising grapes. They planted scores of vines, and birthed Shiloh Vineyard. Their dream has grown enough so they not only produce regional wines but they also host weddings, business, family, and friend gatherings, and 70th birthday parties. Yep, a friend invited me to her milestone birthday held last week at Shiloh Vineyard. Who knew adding a year could be so much fun.

Attending that celebration offered 15 of us the chance to see how Kirk and Treva Johnston have worked hard to turn their family farm into a successful winery and event destination. Guests can enjoy the western Kansas prairie while learning more about the vineyard and wines. I’d guess listening to a meadowlark serenade or watching a stunning sunset while sipping local wine creates favorite memories. The Johnstons offer a tour of their operation that includes a peek at huge casks where wine chemistry takes place as well showing off their rustic dining venue where guests can celebrate weddings, anniversaries, work, graduations, or just because. The tasting room and outdoor gathering area sit north of the barn.

My friend chose to celebrate her 7 decades in the tasting room. It’s cozy enough to encourage visiting across the room between samples of wines and nibbles of crackers and cheese. During my decades, I’ve watched a movie or two where knowledgeable folk sniff and swirl glasses of wine, but I never understood that smelling the bouquet business or the differences between dry, semi-sweet, sweet, whites, reds, and dessert wines. Kirk and Treva offer down to earth guidelines to help guests who know nothing make sense of wine tasting. Many party guests knew more than I, but all of us learned something. My favorite lesson involved discovering a coffee flavored dessert wine that made my taste buds tap dance. I would never guess you could ferment coffee and grapes to create after-dinner magic.

I counted it a blessing to help a dear friend celebrate a milestone birthday, but doing that while enjoying an afternoon on the prairie paired with an opportunity to learn something new about our state’s agriculture made the day extra special. Kansas grapes and wine may end up as famous as its wheat.

MADORIN: Seeing western Kansas possibility

Wilson, Kansas, has long been known as the Czech Capital of Kansas.

People from near and far take the small drive off Interstate 70 in north central Kansas to have their photo taken in front of the world’s largest hand-painted Czech egg.

About a year ago, local business owner Melinda Merrill added another tourist attraction to the small central Kansas town (population 850).

Merrill – who already had revived an apartment complex in an old local school building, as well as the town’s historic Midland Railroad Hotel – opened The Barn:&nbsp;Kansas Libations Club &amp; Social Room.

It’s not just a catchy descriptive name for this community located smack-dab in the middle of rural Kansas.

The 40-by-60 square-foot building, whose name was soon shortened to The Barn, is the real deal.

The barn was built in 1907 near the city’s hotel as the home for stud race horses. It was moved to a working farm less than half a mile away in 1964.

One day while talking with Frank Princ, the owner of that farm just down the road west of the hotel, Merrill mentioned the necessity of a conference center in town.

Princ told Merrill he was no longer using the barn – music to the ears of the local entrepreneur.

“Well, I have a good idea,” Merrill told Princ.&nbsp;

The barn was moved back into town, just yards from its original location. And presto – Wilson now has a unique event venue for weddings, family and class reunions, retirement parties.

You name it. If there’s reason to celebrate a gathering large or small, the ambience of The Barn will help provide memories that won’t soon be forgotten.

“It was really packed during the Czech Festival time,” Merrill said of the annual after-harvest festival held on the last weekend in July.

Once moved to its new home, the inside of the building underwent an entire renovation, complete with iron beams for reinforcement.

Those beams, Merrill explained, were necessary to hold the weight of guests entertaining in the loft, which stretches the entire length and width of The Barn.

Preserving the history of old buildings is a must, Merrill says.

Rather than cover the hay-drop hole in the floor, a large glass structure around the hole lets people view the floor below.

Numerous tables cover the first floor, where customers can enjoy a drink from the fully stocked bar or a smoked BBQ sandwich.

Employees smoke The Barn’s meat (pulled pork, brisket, ribs) in a large smoker. The large meals are prepared at the hotel and transported to The Barn’s smaller preparation kitchen to be kept warm.

Visitors’ eyes light up as they absorb the nostalgia that permeates the building. Wood from the original structure is the hallmark of The Barn.

A large brace from the soffit of the town’s old train depot hangs on one wall. A photo of the depot hangs nearby, just above an old baggage carrier and a suitcase from days gone by.

Numerous pieces of artwork adorn the walls of a seating area lined with bead-board from the office of the racehorse barn.

Customers can dine in one of the stalls that was preserved from the original barn and re-created – or they can choose to sit outdoors near a fire pit.

One wall offers seating from an old buckboard, another a bench from an old railroad depot.

A massive mirrored back bar that covers a wall on the southwest corner of the building came from a hotel in Kansas City, Mo.

The Barn will add more character next month. By Christmastime, anyone driving by the south side of the barn will be treated to large murals of a train engine and the old depot.

The murals, painted by artist Ace Walker from Prague, Okla., were funded by the Department of Commerce for the Wilson Tourism Hub, in cooperation with the Kansas Czechs, Inc.&nbsp;

Up to 80 people can be seated on the first floor, and up to 150 people can entertain upstairs. People can rent either floor or the entire barn.

But anyone thinking of booking an office Christmas party may have to wait until the 2023 holidays.&nbsp;

“We’re pretty packed for Christmas parties,” Merrill said. “I love Christmas. I can hardly wait.”

 </figure>It’s not just a catchy descriptive name for this community located smack-dab in the middle of rural Kansas.The 40-by-60 square-foot building, whose name was soon shortened to The Barn, is the real deal.The barn was built in 1907 near the city’s hotel as the home for stud race horses. It was moved to a working farm less than half a mile away in 1964.One day while talking with Frank Princ, the owner of that farm just down the road west of the hotel, Merrill mentioned the necessity of a conference center in town.Princ told Merrill he was no longer using the barn – music to the ears of the local entrepreneur.“Well, I have a good idea,” Merrill told Princ.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>The barn was moved back into town, just yards from its original location. And presto – Wilson now has a unique event venue for weddings, family and class reunions, retirement parties.You name it. If there’s reason to celebrate a gathering large or small, the ambience of The Barn will help provide memories that won’t soon be forgotten.“It was really packed during the Czech Festival time,” Merrill said of the annual after-harvest festival held on the last weekend in July.Once moved to its new home, the inside of the building underwent an entire renovation, complete with iron beams for reinforcement.Those beams, Merrill explained, were necessary to hold the weight of guests entertaining in the loft, which stretches the entire length and width of The Barn.Preserving the history of old buildings is a must, Merrill says.Rather than cover the hay-drop hole in the floor, a large glass structure around the hole lets people view the floor below.Numerous tables cover the first floor, where customers can enjoy a drink from the fully stocked bar or a smoked BBQ sandwich.<figure>

 </figure>Employees smoke The Barn’s meat (pulled pork, brisket, ribs) in a large smoker. The large meals are prepared at the hotel and transported to The Barn’s smaller preparation kitchen to be kept warm.Visitors’ eyes light up as they absorb the nostalgia that permeates the building. Wood from the original structure is the hallmark of The Barn.A large brace from the soffit of the town’s old train depot hangs on one wall. A photo of the depot hangs nearby, just above an old baggage carrier and a suitcase from days gone by.Numerous pieces of artwork adorn the walls of a seating area lined with bead-board from the office of the racehorse barn.<figure>

 </figure>Customers can dine in one of the stalls that was preserved from the original barn and re-created – or they can choose to sit outdoors near a fire pit.One wall offers seating from an old buckboard, another a bench from an old railroad depot.A massive mirrored back bar that covers a wall on the southwest corner of the building came from a hotel in Kansas City, Mo.The Barn will add more character next month. By Christmastime, anyone driving by the south side of the barn will be treated to large murals of a train engine and the old depot.The murals, painted by artist Ace Walker from Prague, Okla., were funded by the Department of Commerce for the Wilson Tourism Hub, in cooperation with the Kansas Czechs, Inc.&nbsp;<figure>

People can rent either floor or the entire barn.But anyone thinking of booking an office Christmas party may have to wait until the 2023 holidays.&nbsp;“We’re pretty packed for Christmas parties,” Merrill said. “I love Christmas. NWester: Historic barn provides unique event center in Wilson

On Monday afternoon, the Great Bend Recreation Commission Board approved the purchase of
seven spin bikes to begin a spin class program next spring at the Activity
Center. A spin class allows participants to pedal along on a stationary bike while
an instructor takes you through a workout with different pace and speed. 
Great Bend Rec Executive Director Chris Umphres said the plan is to purchase
seven bikes now with the ability to add to the allotment if there is a demand. 
"We're pretty excited about it," said Umphres. "We have an instructor lined up with other possible instructors that would like to do it once they learn more. We'll start small and we can always add to it." 
The rec plans to begin spin bike fitness programs next spring. The purchase of
seven spin bikes from Mid-States Fitness Equipment cost $10,710.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Great Bend Recreation Commission hosted the 3rd Annual Pickleball Turkey Classic on Nov. 12 - 13. This tournament has almost tripled in size since last year’s 48 players came to Great Bend. Year three brought 132 pickleballers to this event which was hosted at the Panther Activity Center (PAC). 

Players came from Great Bend, Hutchinson, Kansas City, Salina, Larned, Hays, Wichita, Topeka and Colorado. These players all ranged from beginners to advanced players. 

Tournaments are designed to have pools and brackets for equal levels of playing ability to make it fun and competitive for everyone. 

Friday night GBRC staff transformed the PAC into nine indoor pickleball courts. The event started at 9 a.m. and finished up around 7 p.m. on both days. 

There were Men’s, Women’s and Mixed divisions. Winners of the brackets won whole turkeys for 1st place, side dishes for 2nd place and pumpkin pie for 3rd place. 

Pickleball has been growing in Great Bend over the last couple of years. It is great watching some of our local players get better over the years as they played in their first tournament this weekend and others have traveled all over the region to compete in other areas. National Sorghum Producers - Sorghum Notes

Every one to three years, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services performs surprise inspections on some 8,000 zoo facilities around the nation. Earlier this month it was the Brit Spaugh Zoo's turn. Zoo Curator Ashley Burdick said the USDA found no non-compliant items.

"They are looking for the standards they put out by the Animal Welfare Act," she said. "They are regulating our mammals - our cats, bears, and primates. They're looking to make sure the animals are healthy, that their exhibits are in good repair - there's no rust, that we're taking good records, that our animals are getting the enrichment they need, they have the space they need. 

"They also look at our kitchen and vet clinic to make sure those are all clean, and that we're keeping our food storage and other storage items in a good way. They also check the drugs we have for the animals and make sure nothing is outdated."

The Animal Welfare Act sets standards for the humane care and treatment of certain animals that are exhibited to the public, sold for use as pets, used in research, or transported commercially. Brit Spaugh Zoo received no non-compliance items, but was instructed to fix some rust on an old exhibit ahead of the next inspection.

Burdick credited her staff for keeping the facility clean and following the protocols that lead to the proper treatment of all the residents.

"We just make sure we're cleaning at a high standard every day, making sure that we're doing our best every day for the animals," she said. "Most of our policies we have in place that we follow daily are on the guidelines they set."

Some of those guidelines include disinfecting certain areas at least once a month and providing enrichment entertainment to the animals.

October started a new year of enrollment for 4-H members in our eight community clubs and their involvement in 40 project areas! Each community club elects representatives to serve on the 4-H Council, much like Student Council. This is an additional layer of leadership and communication learning as the youth and parent representatives share information to and from their clubs. The Achievement Celebration was held a week ago and provides an opportunity for fun, fellowship, and award recognition. The committee selected an 80s theme for a Totally Rad Celebration, and we had lots of neon attire and ice cream sundaes.

All 4-H members are encouraged to keep a record book. Now, I know that record books aren’t everyone’s favorite thing but it does provide good life skills practice in setting goals, keeping track of related finances and activities, and sharing the struggles and successes as our 4-H members learn.

Each year at the end of the celebration, I remind 4-H members to turn to their family members to tell them Thank You! I will add my thanks to club leaders, project leaders, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and neighbors who all have a hand in helping a 4-H member learn, grow, and thrive!

 </figure>October started a new year of enrollment for 4-H members in our eight community clubs and their involvement in 40 project areas! Each community club elects representatives to serve on the 4-H Council, much like Student Council. This is an additional layer of leadership and communication learning as the youth and parent representatives share information to and from their clubs. BERAN: 4-H celebration!

Two of the three incoming Barton County Commissioners were all but locks as uncontested candidates heading into Tuesday's general election. Duane Reif defeated three other candidates in the August primary election for the District 1 seat, and his top competitor, Linda Moeder, challenged Reif again as a write-in candidate in the general election. Reif improved his margin of victory in the general election and said he's ready to go from spectator at meetings, to acting commissioner.

"I've been attending the county commission meetings, and I've found those very helpful and very informative," he said. "Most of all, I just feel like it's very interesting and I wanted, at that time, to be a part of it."

Reif will be joined by incoming commissioners Tricia Schlessiger and Donna Zimmerman. The new trio will replace outgoing commissioners Jennifer Schartz, Kirby Krier, and Jon Prescott. 

"I hate to lose the knowledge of the three commissioners that are going out: Jennifer, Kirby, and Jon," Reif said. "But I think the three new commissioners coming on are going to bring a lot of new ideas and bring their own good things to the meetings. I think we're all going to make a really good team."

Reif was the branch manager of a grain company for 30 years and co-founded the Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation. Along with attending commission meetings to gain experience, Reif also attended the Kansas Association of Counties conference last month alongside Schlessiger, Krier, and Commissioner Barb Esfeld. The new commissioners will be sworn in Jan. 11, 2023.
