The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, November 8, indicates the same drought conditions as last week and the rainfall we received wasn’t enough to change things. We are still in extreme drought and it will take exceptional amounts of precipitation to improve conditions. In this area, we are in extreme drought with exceptional drought inching closer. Exceptional drought is in southern Stafford County and most of Pawnee. If this continues, it will be in Western Barton County next week. For comparison, this is worse than 2012 and it is not even close. The six to ten-day outlook (November 15 to 19) indicates a 91 to 100% chance of below normal temperatures and a chance of normal to slightly below normal precipitation. The precipitation we did receive does help the wheat that’s already emerged hang on and should help the wheat that hasn’t yet merged or sprouted come up. The cold temperatures will slow that down a bit. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (November 17 to 23) indicates a 60 to 70% chance of continuing below normal temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance of above below normal precipitation. Not what anyone wants to hear.

Today, as we head into the start of the holiday season, many producers are wrapping up field work from harvest to wheat planting and even getting equipment cleaned up and put away for a bit. It’s also the time to start planning and thinking about next year. Today, let’s discuss frugal vs. cheap in agriculture.

Frugal:” thrifty use of nonrenewable resources. Economical, stresses prudent management, lack of wastefulness, and use of things to their best advantage.” Cheap: “unwilling or very hesitant to spend money.” Cheap vs. Frugal:” Cheapness uses price as a bottom line; frugality uses value as a bottom line.” No producer wants to waste money or spend more than they need to. However, the important thing for all of us and especially those in agriculture is to be frugal, not cheap. Being frugal doesn’t mean you don’t spend money but you invest or use it wisely. Being cheap means spending as little as possible. A frugal producer in the long run often ends up spending less money and reaping greater profits in the long run and the cheap producer often ends up wasting money and ends up with lower profits. All of us remember the adage that it takes money to make money. So, let’s discuss a real-world example or two to illustrate the point.

This is a time of year to consider soil sampling, depending where you are, for pH, (P) phosphorus, etc. to determine fertilizer needs for next years crops. Not a huge investment but also not cheap. It’s especially important if you haven’t soil tested for a while or if you had poor crops due to the heat and drought. Skipping the test to save money, yes, some still do. Could cost you more money in the long run. Low pH where you need liming will affect crop growth, nutrient uptake, soil applied herbicide activity and result in lower yields. Many soils still have much of the fertilizer applied for the 2022 cropping year available and need little if any say P. Barton Ag Instructor: Frugal vs. cheap in agriculture

Tricia Schlessiger will not officially be sworn into the Barton County Commission until January, but that has not stopped her from logging some hours on county-related business. Before and after the August primary, Schlessiger has attended meetings and done her research. With the win in Tuesday's general election, she's ready to get to work.

"I think the new commissioners, plus the two that are staying on, are going to make a great team," she said. "I think we have already laid some groundwork to work together for the best of the county. I think we all have the ability to see both points of view and try to make decisions that are good for the majority. I'm excited for that. I think it's going to be a great team, and I'm just excited to get started."

Schlessiger will represent District 4 on the commission. That district covers nearly the southern half of Barton County, minus Great Bend and an area north of Great Bend. Schlessiger defeated incumbent Jon Prescott in the August primary, and ran uncontested in Tuesday's general election. 

Schlessiger will be joined by new commissioners Duane Reif and Donna Zimmerman in January. Along with attending commission meetings, Schlessiger and Reif also attended the Kansas Association of Counties meeting in Overland Park last month. Schlessiger is ready to set goals for the county, as well as examine its strength and weaknesses.

"Some of the goals I had set was addressing child care and housing," she said. "I think I'd like to see if we could set maybe some more goals, and maybe a vision for our county, where we want to head. I think that would be a good direction to go."

The three new commissioners will replace Prescott, Kirby Krier, and Jennifer Schartz on Jan. 11, 2023.

'Pints & Politics' on Monday in Great Bend

U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. Thursday announced a loan and grant valued at&nbsp;$26 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)&nbsp;for Ellinwood Hospital to be used to construct a critical access, 45,000 square foot, hospital and medical clinic in Ellinwood. This funding will provide a surgery suite, outpatient clinic services, radiology, and physical therapy, among others.

“It is absolutely wonderful to see the USDA Rural Development funding come to fruition for this critical access hospital and rural health clinic project. The Ellinwood hospital administration and local leadership shared a long-term vision not only to preserve access to quality healthcare in their community, but to expand and offer additional high-quality healthcare services to their patients,”&nbsp;said Senator Marshall. “As a physician who served in Barton County for decades, I applaud this team who worked hard to design and finance this new construction that will serve Ellinwood and the surrounding communities well into the future.”

Ellinwood hospital CEO Kile Magner said, “We appreciate the efforts that Senator Marshall took on our behalf to help with this process. Before heading out of town, think Great Bend businesses first

That was the title of a business book that was especially popular a few years ago, as a parable of how to deal with change. Today we’ll learn about a remarkable change that is coming to southwest Kansas, and it is literally about cheese. A new state-of-the-art cheese and whey protein processing plant is being constructed in Dodge City.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Joann Knight is executive director of the&nbsp;Dodge City/Ford County Development Corporation with headquarters in Dodge City. She’s a native of the region and a graduate of Dodge City Community College and the University of Oklahoma Economic Development Institute.&nbsp;

“Back in 1992, we started talking about recruiting dairies from California where they were being crowded out by population expansion,” Knight said.&nbsp;

Recruiting dairies became a successful strategy for the western Kansas Rural Economic Development Alliance in following decades. As milk production grew in western Kansas, leaders wanted to add value and create more jobs.&nbsp;

In 2021, Hilmar Cheese Company of Hilmar, Calif. announced that the company would build a state-of-the-art milk processing facility in Dodge City.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We’re excited,” Knight said.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“This will be a $630 million project and create 260 jobs. The average salary is projected to be $63,000.”&nbsp;

The plant will operate 365 days a year and have the capacity to handle 260 tanker trucks of milk per day, the equivalent of the production of 110,000 cows. “They’ll be bringing in milk from across the region,” Knight said.&nbsp;

Hilmar Cheese Company was founded in 1984 by 12 dairy farm families in central California. In 2007, the company opened a production facility in Dalhart, Texas. The company is now one of the world’s largest producers of high quality, American-style cheese and whey products.&nbsp;

“Hilmar is an incredibly environmentally sensitive company,” Knight said. One of the factors that attracted Hilmar to Dodge City is the city’s innovative wastewater treatment system, which has won numerous awards.&nbsp;

“Milk is mostly water,” Knight said. “Once the cheese solids and whey are removed, that water will be recycled and reused. It can be re-irrigated and used in the biogas production system. They’ll actually be injecting water back into the aquifer.”&nbsp;

David Ahlem is president and CEO of Hilmar Cheese Company. “Dodge City gives us many opportunities, including a local and skilled labor force, a supportive and expanding agricultural region, and an excellent transportation network that allows us to easily reach our expanding markets,” he said at the time of the announcement in 2021.&nbsp;

The company specializes in the production of cheddar and American-style cheeses used by private label and national brand companies worldwide. It currently produces such cheeses as cheddar, monterey jack, pepper jack, colby, colby jack and mozzarella.&nbsp;

Whey is processed into whey protein products that are used as ingredients in many foods including nutritional beverages and bars; and lactose, which is marketed internationally as an ingredient in confections and infant formula. Hilmar exports products to 50 countries.&nbsp;

Increased demand for milk will benefit area dairies such as High Plains Ponderosa Dairy near the rural southwest Kansas community of Plains, population 1,037 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

“Dairy production is so advanced these days,” Knight said. “They’re using robotic milkers and computer operators. They monitor 600 data points on each cow and can test the milk on the spot with their state of the art system.”&nbsp;

“The economic impact will be compounded substantially by the additional dairies, transportation and services that will be required. This could double the dairy industry in southwest Kansas.”&nbsp;

The Great Bend Fire Department “B” Shift responded to a garage fire in 2600 block of Gano Street at 2:26 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12.

No injuries were reported.&nbsp; The garage was a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.&nbsp; GBFD was assisted by the Great Bend Police Department.

Great Bend Fire Dept. responds to garage fire

Holidays are a great time of year to connect with family. It is easy to let schedules get too hectic so make sure you prioritize your family this time of year. Hopefully you will have some down time to visit around the dining room table, without any electronic devices. That is the perfect environment for treasured family time.

Incorporating games, working a jig saw puzzle or building a snowman (if we get snow) are definitely memory makers. I have a great poster titled, “100 Ways to Celebrate your Family” that is free if you simply stop by our office at 3007 10th Street in Great Bend. All of the suggestions are no-cost or very low cost and I firmly believe that those are the things that make the biggest impression on kids.

When our grandkids come for a visit I always have plenty of paper, markers, and colored pencils on hand for the budding artists. When they leave, I have new pictures to put on the refrigerator.

Another consideration during this busy time of year is to stick to a simpler menu. There is no prize for stressing yourself out in the kitchen. Menu ideas I go to at this time of year include soups and stews, served up with some tasty fresh fruit. Not only are these ideas simple but they are healthier choices as well.

Later this month, on November 30th, at noon, I hope you will mark your calendar and join me at noon at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th Street. I have invited Monique, my team member from the Hays office, to work together to present an educational program we have titled, “Heathy Holiday Hints.” We’ll have some fun ideas to share that may help you de-stress and enjoy the holidays for the right reasons.

Whatever you are planning and wherever your holiday travels take you, make time for some simple fun with your family!

Great Bend Community Theatre play Nov. 17-20

When Frank McKinney learned in April last year that Aster Estates was about to open, he knew he found the answer for his friend, Scott Thein.

As a result, Thein was the first resident of Aster Estates, the home-plus residence at 155 NW 10th Ave, just north of the city limits on McKinley.

During most of Thein’s stay, he received palliative care but during the last weeks of his life, he received hospice care. He was 69.

McKinney wanted to share Thein’s story in observance of National Hospice &amp; Palliative Care Month.

Palliative care begins at diagnosis, while hospice begins after treatment has stopped – when it is clear the person won’t survive.

“In addition to rectal and prostate cancer, Scott had an aggressive form of bladder cancer,” said McKinney, lifelong Great Bend resident. “Doctors were amazed he lived 4-and-a-half years with this bladder cancer. Then it went to his brain.”

McKinney and Thein had been friends for about 15 years after meeting in New York, where Thein was living at the time.

“Scott visited Great Bend and liked it here.” McKinney recalled. “I suggested he move here. If he had stayed in New York, I know he would have died a long time ago by himself.”

McKinney acknowledged that his friend “wasn’t sure at first about Aster Estates because Pam Lewis might be too motherly.” Lewis, a registered nurse, owns Aster Estates and lives there.

“Scott felt safe here – emotionally and physically,” McKinney emphasized. “He had a unique childhood but after he had been at Aster Estates for a little while, he said ‘I finally found a home.’”

He had his own chair at the dinner table and enjoyed a birthday cake for the first time, McKinney explained, noting just two ways Aster Estates made him feel at home.

McKinney visited Thein often and took him to some doctors’ appointments. Lewis and her staff also provide transportation.

“Pam has a great staff of certified nurse and medication aides,” McKinney commented. “I always felt welcome when I visited Scott and feel the same way today when I drop in to say ‘hi.’”

Lewis contracts with local hospice agencies that provide registered nurses, nurse and medication aides, medical equipment, social workers and case managers. Chaplains are available for the asking.

“We offer services for someone who needs just a little help with medications and personal care, in addition to palliative and hospice care,” Lewis said. “This continuum of care is so important because our residents can stay here with the people they know and trust.

“We are here for the families too,” she added. “They are going through emotional trauma, wondering what happens next. We can answer those questions. We keep families and doctors informed.”

Lewis also noted that when hospice care is provided away from the person’s private home, “some of the pressure on the family is relieved. They can visit their loved one any time but they also have the respite and support they deserve.”

Aster Estates amenities Everyone has a private suite, even though some rooms in the 3,600-square-foot residence are large enough for two people.

The state-licensed residence was completely remodeled and most suites have either full- or half-baths. A state-approved fire-alarm system was installed.

Other features include: three home-cooked meals a day and snacks; swimming pool for water aerobics and relaxation with supervision; fishing pond; outdoor pool table and firepit; and large outdoor sitting/activity area.

“All these features combine to allow residents to enjoy both privacy and fellowship at their discretion,” Lewis said. “We understand the emotional upheaval when a move has to be made but we will make them feel at home as much as possible.”

Eagle Radio's News Week in Review

Kansas Wetlands Education Center has been recognized as one of the world’s best wetland visitor centers. Their success was announced at the Conference of the global Wetlands Convention, known as Ramsar COP14, underway in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Star Wetland Centre Award is a new initiative to recognize best practices in eco-tourism and education at wetlands. It is coordinated by Wetland Link International (WLI), a support network for staff and volunteers at 300 wetland visitor centers.

Kansas Wetlands Education Center is one of 23 centers worldwide, and one of only 2 in the United States, that have been selected by an international panel of experienced wetlands professionals.

“It's an honor for the Kansas Wetlands Education Center to be included in a list of other awesome wetlands centers internationally,” says Curtis Wolf, Director of the Kansas Wetlands Education Center.

“While our wetland center is only a small dot on the map, we are encouraged to know we are contributing to a larger shared goal of educating people across the world about nature, conservation, and appreciation of our natural resources."

“The judges were particularly struck by the high-quality programming,” says Chris Rostron, the Head of WLI and leader of the Star awards process.

“Kansas Wetland Education Center accommodates very wide visitation thanks to good disabled access and audio tours, along with a strong online offering including 360-degree virtual tours and the 'watcha doing rob' video series. &nbsp;

The Stars have been awarded to 23 wetland visitor centers around the world at a ceremony at the 14th&nbsp;Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar COP14).

We define a wetland education center as “any wetland where there is interaction between people and wildlife and CEPA (communications, education and public awareness) activity occurs in support of wetland conservation aims.”

Hoisington Chamber welcomes newest business

When last year’s ElderCare Giving Tree project started, Executive Director Brandi Gruber said it was especially important because of the pandemic. She is saying the same thing this year.

“Even though COVID risks have greatly decreased, the virus continues to play a role in the lives of many of our clients,” Gruber said. “They are not getting out of the house as much as they used to. It is simply a different world now.”

The Giving Tree is located at the ElderCare office, 1121 Washington, Great Bend. The office is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

However, if those hours aren’t convenient for donors, they may call 620-792-5942 or email bgruber@eldercareks.org for an appointment.

“We will accommodate anyone who wants to donate a gift and share the Christmas spirit with the people we serve,” Gruber said. “I guarantee you they appreciate the support the community has shown for this project the past five years.”

The tree is trimmed with decorative tags that represent ElderCare clients and their particular needs. Actual names are not used because of privacy concerns.

Gifts should be returned to the ElderCare office by Dec. 14.

“This project has been popular since day one,” Gruber commented. “We know our generous community will come through again this year. This is a great way to show we care about seniors who are short on finances and have limited mobility.

“They need to know their neighbors think about them during the Christmas season. Individuals and businesses are encouraged to donate some basic items that are important to seniors’ daily lives.”

Gifts could include blankets, warm clothing, toiletry items, and crossword-puzzle and word-search books. Gift cards for a few staples at the grocery store also are appreciated.

“In addition, a favorite candy or food item is a day-brightener,” Gruber noted. “It’s nice when a package includes a gift that is just for fun.”

Counties involved are Barton, Pawnee, Edwards, Stafford and Pratt. ElderCare serves about 250 clients in this area.

Anyone who receives home-care services in these counties is eligible for the Giving Tree project.

“Our local caregivers serve as our eyes and ears when visiting private homes,” Gruber said. “They give us suggestions about particular wants and needs. Caregivers also deliver the gifts and share some Christmas joy with their clients.

“Each year, individuals, businesses, churches and civic groups donate much-needed gifts,” Gruber added. “We are always gratified by the amazing response and are eager to see what this year brings.”

Anyone who knows a senior citizen who could benefit from this project is encouraged to contact ElderCare soon.

The non-profit agency’s home services include personal care, household tasks and respite for caregivers. Registered nurses offer medication management, wellness checks and companionship.

Well, it's that time of season again! Freezing temperatures are forecasted across the Kansas and Oklahoma Region this weekend.

The Red Cross encourages people to take a few minutes to prepare for the conditions. So, here are a few quick tips and reminders for you:

Red Cross offers tips to prepare for freezing weather

A big win in the August primary election all but secured Donna Zimmerman's seat as the Barton County Commissioner for District 5. Tuesday's general election result made it official. After 40 years of service to the county, including 26 years as county clerk, Zimmerman said she's ready to serve again in her new role.

"It was hard to retire from the office of county clerk, but I knew it was time to move on and do something different," she said. "I'm super excited to be back and be part of the county structure again."

In the primary election, Zimmerman secured 834 votes compared to 507 votes for Rick Davis. Running uncontested in Tuesday's general election, Zimmerman won 1,802 votes against 14 write-in votes.

Zimmerman will join incoming commissioners Tricia Schlessiger and Duane Reif, and the trio will replace outgoing commissioners Jennifer Schartz, Jon Prescott, and Kirby Krier. Zimmerman said the new group is ready to hit the ground running.

"All three of us have attended many of the commission meetings, trying to stay abreast of what's going on," she said. "There's a huge project coming up, which is the HVAC system for the courthouse. I think it's been imperative that everyone stays on top of what's going on and the changes happening with that project."

The three new commissioners will be sworn on Jan. 11, 2023.

Zimmerman ready to return to county service as Barton's District 5 commissioner

Following Wednesday's regular Barton County Commission meeting, the commission entered right into a meeting for Fire District No. 1. Fire Chief Doug Hubbard presented on two grants the department recently received. The first was for $15,000 and a new washing machine.

"The grant was actually two parts," Hubbard said. "The grant for the cash, $15,000 for the personal protective equipment, and then the washing machine, called an extractor washer. The fire marshal's office just has them, and they grant them to basically anybody who applies. That's probably worth $5-6,000."

The commission agreed to pay $15,700 for five sets of Danko bunker equipment and gear for the district. After submission of proof of purchase, the state fire marshal's office will reimburse the county $15,000 as part of the grant. 

Extractor washing machines are high-powered machines that can wash large loads of laundry and remove most of the moisture from the articles after the wash to reduce dry times. Hubbard said fire equipment does not go through a dryer because heat can damage some of the fire-retardant properties.

Fire District No. 1 received another grant for grain rescue gear, which was recently put into service. Hubbard said, besides grain elevators, many farms have their own grain storage where the equipment may be needed someday.

Barton Fire District No. 1 receives grant from State Fire Marshal's office

Network Kansas is developing a new pilot program for Kansas entrepreneurs
called NXTStage. Selected entrepreneurs will receive one-on-one coaching,
bi-weekly in-person workshops to build community with other founders and
professional pitch coaching and mentorship. 
Great Bend Economic Development Director Sara Arnberger said Network Kansas
asked them if they had applicants they would like to submit. "It's an eight-week program where they would be paired with a nationally-known business mentor," said Arnberger. called NXTStage. Selected entrepreneurs will receive one-on-one coaching,
bi-weekly in-person workshops to build community with other founders and
professional pitch coaching and mentorship. 
Great Bend Economic Development Director Sara Arnberger said Network Kansas
asked them if they had applicants they would like to submit. "It's an eight-week program where they would be paired with a nationally-known business mentor," said Arnberger. "They would go through the processes of looking at their business, deciding how to make it more profitable and reach more of a customer base."

Great Bend area entrepreneurs can apply for 1-on-1 coaching program

Work is underway on the installation of automated meter reading for
Great Bend’s water meters. Zenner USA has started drilling holes in the meter
lids to install antennas for the Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI). 
The $2.46 million project will provide technology to more accurately read
meters and avoid the high turnover rate with staff assigned to reading the meters. 
Great Bend City Council member Alan Moeder, a plumber by profession, asked City
Administrator Kendal Francis how this would affect anyone needing to access the
meters. "We shut meters off all the time," said Moeder. "Does that lid have to be put in the exact same spot for the antenna?" "No, but there does need to be some care when you remove the lid because there is a lead to the antenna," said Francis. "It will have a little bit of play in it, but you can't willy-nilly toss it off to the side."

Francis noted communication will be going out to plumbers and other professions that would need to access the meters on how to properly handle the meters. 
Francis said Zenner USA started the installation process this week between
Kiowa Road and Frey Street, from 5th Street to the south edge of
town. 
Once completed, the new system will electronically send the water usage to
collectors, or towers positioned throughout town, which will eventually get
sent to the city’s billing office. 
There are approximately 6,500 commercial and residential water meters in the
city’s service area. The AMI system is expected to be operating by next
February.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
