In 1992, I completed my Master’s Degree research, focusing on the History of Ellis Schools from 1873 to 1966. Due to time limitations, the end result isn’t comprehensive; however, I learned much about Ellis. Many folks shared resources, including Maxine Bradbury with her treasure trove of local history, Ellis Public Library, and USD 388’s school board minutes. I share these stories in hopes others add to them. In addition, I encourage researchers in other communities to gather resources that add details to our regional story. Who knows when one bit of information listen historians connect important dots.

Prior to 1867, Ellis and the surrounding area provided range and forage for huge buffalo herds that followed seasonal migration patterns. The Saline, Smoky Hill, Big Creek, and other drainages watered these beasts and native tribes following them to harvest what they needed for survival and trade. You could compare this region to a modern-day Box Store offering food, shelter, clothing, tools, weapons, and other necessities to those who called it home. Clearly, public schools played no role in this lifestyle.

Following the Civil War, adventurers and individuals unmoored by national struggles sought western lands where they could realize their dreams. Inspired by this westward movement, entrepreneurs built railroads to link markets to buyers of agricultural products. These businessmen also acquired blocks of land they used to motivate settlement. By 1867, the Union Pacific Railroad established a water station in or near what is now Ellis.

Circa 1928 or 51 years after that resource appeared, resident Jenny Martin wrote The Early History of Ellis Kansas, which recorded that a family with children settled in the community in 1870, three short years after the railroad established that water station. Seeing a need and valuing education, Mrs. Dan Moore held a short two term school in her home in 1870 and 1871.

Mrs. Moore’s initiative paid off and the community banded together to build a small wooden school house on the north side of the UPPR tracks. Miss Fanny Hemminger taught that first year. According to pioneer Jessie Ormerod, an old red stove stood in a corner near the teacher’s desk. She mentioned the children huddled around it in cold weather.

She also recalled a water bucket located on a bench in the room. Without exact detail, I assume the teacher added fuel to the stove and filled the bucket each morning. Jessie’s recollection stated the children took frequent drinks from the dipper in the bucket and left a puddle of water constantly standing on the floor. Mrs. Ormerod added that since there was no janitor, the teacher appointed two girls to sweep the building. She found it ironic that the assigned girls considered this task an honor.

Jessie also noted that the students wrote their lessons on slates and that girls kept little bottles of colored water and white rags to clean their slates. In contrast, she shared that boys used their coat sleeves to wipe their slates.

drought monitor report as of Tuesday, December 12 indicates the area of
exceptional drought covering almost one-third of our state, mostly western
Kansas but also parts of South Central and Southeast Kansas.&nbsp; Our extreme drought conditions continue with
extreme drought almost here.&nbsp; The six to ten-day
outlook (December 21 to 25) indicates a 80 to 90% chance of below normal temperatures
and near normal precipitation.&nbsp; The eight
to fourteen-day outlook (December 23 to 29) indicates a continued 40 to 60% of
below normal temperatures and up to a 40% chance of below normal precipitation.&nbsp; This week: the top agriculture stories of
2022.&nbsp; This list isn’t meant to be
complete and not necessarily in any particular order.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While
in no particular order, the weather of 2022 is certainly the top story of 2022
for many, not just in Kansas but for much of the world.&nbsp; For much of the western two-thirds of the
USA, drought and heat were the story, a continuing one with the drought.&nbsp; A La Nina that just won’t go away.&nbsp; Other parts of the world experienced severe
drought and famine looms in many parts of eastern Africa.&nbsp; Other areas such as Pakistan, experienced
record flooding.&nbsp; Florida experienced a
devastating hurricane.&nbsp; Now we are
dealing with extreme cold couple with severe weather, including tornadoes in
the Southeast USA.&nbsp; The pattern for
extremes seems to be intensifying globally.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Relating
to the first point, in spite of our weather challenges, as a nation we produced
respectable amounts and grain and soybeans,&nbsp;
It points to the progress we have made genetically and in cultural
practices.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Prices
continue to present challenges for producers and consumers.&nbsp; While commodity prices, especially for grains
were higher overall, input prices for everything from fuel and fertilizer to
seed and pesticides remained high.&nbsp;
Combine that with many areas experiencing weather related yield
decreases, it’s been a challenging year.&nbsp;
The meat/poultry industry also dealt with challenged from disease in the
poultry industry to lower prices for finished cattle.&nbsp; Consumers felt this at the store with strong
inflation.&nbsp; And while energy and other
prices are easing for consumers, inflation remains strong at the grocery store.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The
Russian invasion of Ukraine had and continues to have major impacts of food
supplies across the globe.&nbsp; It’s also had
a major impact on energy and fertilizer prices.&nbsp;
With no end in sight, this will continue to present challenges as
Ukraine is an important supplier of grains and food oils.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The
labor shortage and supply chain issues continue to hamper the industry.&nbsp; While supply chain issues have eased
somewhat, the labor shortage is intensifying.&nbsp;
There is little hope for the labor shortage easing anytime soon.&nbsp; 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Continued
consolidation across food and agriculture changes the landscape for producers
and consumers.&nbsp; From Co-ops to grocery
store chains, there is less and less consolidation.&nbsp; Those consolidating say it will improve
efficiency and lower prices.&nbsp; Opponents
contend it will hurt producers and consumers.&nbsp;
Time will tell.

Do things that bring you joy! One of the things that can further break down the immune system is depression and anxiety. Learning to cope with stress in healthy ways can make other healthy choices easier. For stress relief, take deep breaths, stretch, meditate, or do an activity you enjoy, even if it’s just for 10 minutes. Talk with people you trust about how you’re feeling and write down the things you are grateful for.

We’ve all been there. During the holidays you order something online and anxiously await its arrival. But then your package doesn’t come when the seller said it would. And worse, you hear nothing. Your happy anticipation is turning to anger and frustration. So now what?

●First,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/solving-customer-problems-returns-refunds-and-other-resolutions">contact the seller</a>. Most businesses will work with you to resolve the problem and keep you as a customer.

●If that doesn’t work, you still didn’t get your order and the charge shows up on your credit card statement,&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/disputing-credit-card-charges">dispute</a> the&nbsp;charge.

●If you paid by debit card, contact your debit card company (often your bank or credit union). Ask if they can help you. This&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/sample-letter-disputing-credit-debit-card-charges#sample">sample letter</a>&nbsp;for disputing debit card charges can help.

Sometimes, you can head problems off by doing some research before buying from an unfamiliar online store.

FTC: What to do if your online order never arrives

Brian Wahlmeier,&nbsp;master plumber and master mechanical technician&nbsp;is retiring after 34 years with Stueder Contractors on Dec. 31, 2022. Brian, also known has “Wally” started work at Stueder’s on Oct. 20, 1988. &nbsp;

“He is very talented and knows his profession better than anyone you’ll ever meet,” said Terry Stueder. &nbsp;“While he may not like a lot of attention, we’re so proud of the way he has represented Stueder Contractors over the years.”

Brian&nbsp;graduated from the plumbing program at Northwest Kansas Vocational College, now&nbsp;Northwest Kansas Technical College,&nbsp;in Goodland. Brian has trained many Stueder’s technicians over the years. He becomes friends with the entire crew, young and old.

Brian's words of wisdom are to “Enjoy what you’re doing and have fun!” His favorite part of his job over the past 3+ decades with Stueder’s has been the people&nbsp;-&nbsp;customers and co-workers&nbsp;alike.

In his retirement, Brian is looking forward to taking a break and picking up his golf clubs a little more. He has four grandkids in the Great Bend area that are sure to keep him busy with bowling and other activities.

Wahlmeier retires after 34 years at Stueder Contractors

Barton’s Cougar Supply Den (CSD) was awarded $70,000 through a federal grant from the United States Department of Education and the Kansas Board of Regents that can be used to purchase food and personal care items that students in need can use free of cost.

Central Kansas Upward Bound Director and CSD Sponsor Patrick Busch said he is thankful for the funds that will help students.

“This grant will allow the CSD to offer more items like fresh fruits, milk and&nbsp;juices,” Busch said. “It will also allow the CSD to offer more feminine hygiene products, dental care products, etc.”

Donations can be dropped off at the Learning Resource Center located in the middle of campus from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Barton’s 'Cougar Supply Den' receives $70,000 grant

Some have a basic understanding of the flour milling process. Some have absolutely no idea how wheat from a farm ends up as flour destined for a baker’s oven.

Regardless of their experience, farmers and State Wheat Commission staffers who gathered in Manhattan, Kansas, this week share a common destiny.

“Everybody is going to learn something,” said Shawn Thiele, who led the three-day flour milling course presented by the IGP Institute and Kansas State University (KSU). “From those who have experience with wheat and flour to those who’ve never stepped foot in a flour mill, the course is designed as a thorough look at the action of turning wheat into flour – step-by-step and step-by-step.”

Conducted at IGP and on the KSU campus, the Dec. 13 to 15 training – considered a “deep dive” into flour milling – is a condensed short course specifically built for producers who sit on the boards of state wheat organizations, as well as people who work for those organizations. Representatives from Idaho, Kansas, Oklahoma and Oregon were involved in the course. U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) staffers Peter Laudeman and Ralph Loos also took part.

“It is kind of amazing when you come to know what you didn’t know,” Martin Kerschen, a wheat farmer, a Kansas Wheat Commissioner and one of the students in the IGP-KSU flour milling class, said. “It’s clear how important details are when taking our wheat and turning it into something bakeries and consumers on the other side of the world really want and appreciate.”

The course included classroom trainings on wheat quality, global competition facing U.S. farmers, wheat cleaning and conditioning, and an overview of the mechanics of wheat milling. Participants also milled wheat during a hands-on laboratory workshop and later toured the KSU Hal Ross Four Mill.

USW Vice President of Global Technical Services Mark Fowler, an experienced flour milling instructor, also gave a presentation on the role quality plays in the global wheat market.

“USW finds a lot of value in these IGP-KSU courses because it provides producers and others we work with in the wheat industry insight into the relationship between wheat quality and flour performance,” Fowler said. “It gives growers a new perspective on what international customers look for in quality flour.”

In 2020, Kansans ages 60 and up fell victim to financial fraud to the tune of $48 million. Making fraud prevention a family affair is one of the most effective ways to stop bad actors in their tracks.

“Families are often the first line of defense against bad actors,” said Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt. “New tactics and scams are constantly being deployed by fraudsters, especially during the holiday season.”

Here are several family-focused fraud prevention tips to consider when helping loved ones protect their pocketbooks:

• Check in often – Regular communication with your elderly loved ones is the best way to detect behavior changes that could indicate if someone has gained unwarranted influence over their investment and financial decision-making.

• Do not shame – We have all been tricked before, and victims of fraud should be comforted when coping with the fallout of deceptive actions. Keeping an empathetic tone when dealing with fraud as it will increase the victim’s willingness to open up about the experience.

• Encourage verification – Encourage them to inquire about whether the individual selling the investment is registered. Not all investments sold require the entity or individual to be registered, but investment opportunities not backed by a registered entity or person deserve additional scrutiny.

Holiday tips for helping family fight financial fraud

Cody Thacker was looking for a position that offered the opportunity to support Pawnee Valley Community Hospital (PVCH), while simultaneously allowing him to become more involved in his community.

His search led him to his new position as PVCH Foundation director.

“This position affords me the opportunity to support our local, community hospital,” said Thacker, a Kansas native. “I have a strong respect for what this hospital means to Larned, Pawnee County and the surrounding area.

“In addition, I am now able to become better acquainted with more of my neighbors in central Kansas.”

As Foundation director, Thacker works closely with the non-profit entity’s Board of Trustees. They collaborate on community relations, fundraising projects and events, private-donation oversight, endowment management and capital campaigns.

“Gifts to the Foundation provide vital philanthropic support to help fund life-saving equipment, as well as special PVCH projects and programs that advance quality healthcare in our community,” Thacker noted. “This is the Foundation’s mission.

“A great example,” he elaborated, “is the Foundation’s capital campaign, which raised funds to bring 3D mammography to our hospital. This is the latest and most advanced breast imaging available today and we have the community to thank for it.”

In the short-term, Thacker is moving forward with Foundation projects already in motion.

“I also hope to suggest new ideas for consideration, while making it a priority to connect with individuals and businesses,” he commented. “I am eager to get to know as many community members as I can.

“Looking ahead, I want to work closely with the trustees to carry out the Foundation’s mission. In partnership with them and private donors, our goal is to satisfy the long-range healthcare needs of Pawnee County and the surrounding area.”

Thacker grew up just north of Offerle; his parents live on a farm there. He lives in Larned where his twin sister and one brother reside too.

He graduated from Spearville High School in 2010 and is currently studying for his bachelor’s degree in business administration/marketing through Fort Hays State University.

Previous employment includes area field manager at U-Haul International in Larned; sales representative at Midway MFG in Kinsley; clubhouse manager at Cimarron Golf Club in Cimarron; and sales representative for Lewis Automotive in Garden City.

Thacker named Pawnee Valley Community Hospital Foundation director

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a&nbsp;seasonally adjusted unemployment rate&nbsp;of 2.8% in November. This was unchanged from 2.8% in October and unchanged from 2.8% in November 2021.

“There was little change in the labor force this month, resulting in the unemployment rate remaining at 2.8%,” said Secretary Amber Shultz. “This is also unchanged from last November.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

In central Kansas, several counties report a jobless rates below 2 percent. Barton County saw unemployment increase from 2.5 percent in October to 2.6 percent in November.&nbsp; Rush County saw a similar increase.&nbsp;

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 400 from October. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers.&nbsp;Private sector jobs&nbsp;decreased by 1,000 over the month, while government increased by 600.

“Total nonfarm job estimates for Kansas indicate a small decline over the month in November,” said Labor Economist Emilie Doerksen. “However, due to strong growth in October and gains earlier this year, current estimates are 2.7% higher than last November.”

Since November 2021 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs&nbsp;have increased by 36,700. This change is due to an increase of 34,600 private sector jobs and an increase of 2,100 government jobs.

Blizzard Energy opened in 2015 in Great Bend as a recycling facility for
tires. The company breaks down tires through heat and distributes the components. 
Blizzard suspended operations during the COVID-19 pandemic and are attempting
to restart. 
The City of Great Bend has been working with Blizzard to find terms that would
help them get back up to speed. 
Blizzard desires to renew the lease near the Great Bend Municipal Airport, but
on a one-year term. Initial rent is $1,779 per month. This amount will remain
the same from their current agreement. Rent increases five percent each renewal
and goes to $2,850 per month upon return of the facility to full-time
operations. 
The Great Bend City Council will hear a motion to approve the lease agreement
with Blizzad Energy. The meeting will held Monday at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

By combining funds awarded from two separate grants Barton Community College has been able to place recycling containers throughout student housing as well as two four-bin trailers to hold material. Barton Central Kansas Upward Bound Director Patrick Busch spearheaded the entire project as a way to foster good recycling habits for students.

“We partnered with Sunflower Diversified Services, Inc and the Barton County Commissioners Office to apply for a Solid Waste Grant through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and were awarded $16,500. The trailers are placed outside of Bluestem and Cottonwood Halls. They accept plastic bottles, aluminum, cardboard and corrugated cardboard.”

Busch said the containers were made possible through a $7,000 grant from the Can’d Aid Organization.&nbsp;

“We were able to purchase 300 of these recycling containers,” he said.&nbsp; “We put one in each of the dorm rooms and we were also able to purchase 4 outdoor recycling bins for the students to put their material.” Busch said the students are taking advantage of the recycling and that they routinely fill the trailers. “We’d like to thank everyone involved,” he said. “It was a group effort and we really want to thank Shawn Bates at Sunflower Diversified, the Barton County Commissioners Office and Barton’s facility department for helping us with the project.”

Eagle Radio's News Week in Review

When school resumes in January, Great Bend elementary students will meet two adventurous characters, Zoey and Sassafras, as they dive into the 2023 Great Bend Reading Initiative and a book filled with magical animals, science, and mystery.

The Great Bend Reading Initiative, GB Reads for short, first launched in 2015 with the goal of promoting student literacy skills through school and family engagement.

“GB Reads is a shared experience for children and parents in our school communities,” said Tricia Reiser, assistant superintendent for USD 428. "There is a positive connection between family involvement, literacy skills, and success in school. GB Reads is a fun and engaging way to build vocabulary, foster an enjoyment for reading, and strengthen parent-child relationships."

GB Reads will launch on Jan. 6, 2023, with all USD 428 elementary students in grades Kindergarten – 6th receiving a copy of "Zoey and Sassafras Dragons and Marshmallows."

“The series has quickly gained recognition for the imaginative and inviting adventures of a little girl named Zoey and her cat Sassafrass,” said Holly Tittel, USD 428 media specialist and librarian. “While we’re excited to introduce our families and students to these characters, we’ve also stocked our elementary libraries with other books in the series, anticipating their popularity.”

For the program, the committee sought a book that was printed in both English and Spanish to best serve all students and families within the district. One top choice was tabled for next year, but the committee did like the series aspect of "Zoey and Sassafras."

"We found this one, and we just fell in love with the characters," Tittel said. "It is a series, so if students really fall in love with Zoey and Sassafras like we did, then they can continue on with the series."

GB Reads is sponsored by USD 428 and presented in partnership with the Great Bend Public Library and other community partners. This year, more than 1,300 students will receive a copy of the book along with a calendar providing a schedule for reading the book and information on supporting activities and events.

Will they be able to help little Marshmallow before it’s too late?

 </figure>When school resumes in January, Great Bend elementary students will meet two adventurous characters, Zoey and Sassafras, as they dive into the 2023 Great Bend Reading Initiative and a book filled with magical animals, science, and mystery.The Great Bend Reading Initiative, GB Reads for short, first launched in 2015 with the goal of promoting student literacy skills through school and family engagement.“GB Reads is a shared experience for children and parents in our school communities,” said Tricia Reiser, assistant superintendent for USD 428. "There is a positive connection between family involvement, literacy skills, and success in school. GB Reads is a fun and engaging way to build vocabulary, foster an enjoyment for reading, and strengthen parent-child relationships."GB Reads will launch on Jan. 6, 2023, with all USD 428 elementary students in grades Kindergarten – 6th receiving a copy of "Zoey and Sassafras Dragons and Marshmallows."<figure>

 </figure>“The series has quickly gained recognition for the imaginative and inviting adventures of a little girl named Zoey and her cat Sassafrass,” said Holly Tittel, USD 428 media specialist and librarian. “While we’re excited to introduce our families and students to these characters, we’ve also stocked our elementary libraries with other books in the series, anticipating their popularity.”For the program, the committee sought a book that was printed in both English and Spanish to best serve all students and families within the district. One top choice was tabled for next year, but the committee did like the series aspect of "Zoey and Sassafras.""We found this one, and we just fell in love with the characters," Tittel said. "It is a series, so if students really fall in love with Zoey and Sassafras like we did, then they can continue on with the series."GB Reads is sponsored by USD 428 and presented in partnership with the Great Bend Public Library and other community partners. GB Reads: Adventure and mystery await USD 428 students in 2023

With help from their presenters, Eagle Radio in Great Bend was able to make someone's holiday season brighter. Jennifer Schroeder was chosen as the winner of the Shop at Home for the Holidays $10,000 Shopping Spree.

With 78 finalists, Schroeder's ping pong ball was the last remaining ball Friday for the giveaway at the Crest Theatre in Great Bend.

"I signed up for Eagle's car giveaway in the past," said Schroeder. "I made the final ten for that but was out pretty quick after that. I've never won anything this big. Thank you!"

Schroeder, from Ellinwood, was instant finalist #23 and qualified at Nex-Tech in Great Bend.

Schroeder will get to spend the $10,000 locally before Christmas at any of Eagle's 30 sponsor locations.

The Shop at Home for the Holiday's $10,000 Shopping Spree was presented by Bauer Computers and Moeder Plumbing Heating and Air your Bryant Dealer.

Schroeder is the big winner in Eagle Radio's $10,000 giveaway

WILSON — Visitors to the Czech Capital of Kansas will soon be able to view two large murals honoring Czech immigrants and the railroad in rural Kansas.

The unveiling will take place in a dedication ceremony from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at the site of the Midland Railroad Hotel Barn.

The murals created by artist Ace Walker from Oklahoma were made possible because of a grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce’s Rural Mural Program that required a 1:1 match from the community.

Wilson, one of 14 cities to receive a grant, was awarded one of the largest amounts ($10,000).

The Wilson Tourism Hub and the Kansas Czechs Inc., collaborated to successfully write the grant.

“By funding the creation of murals and public art in communities across Kansas, we want to celebrate the beauty of our state and highlight everything our small towns have to offer,” Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly said.

The large murals, which will fill the south side of The Barn Event Center, will depict Czech immigrants arriving at the train station, along with a nod to the history of the horse racing track located in Wilson at the turn of the century.

Speakers will include Aaron Valesek, honorary consul to the Czech Republic, and Mike Peschka, mayor of Wilson.

The Kansas Czech queen, Hannah Andringa from Ellsworth, also will be in attendance. An artist reception will follow inside The Barn.

About the artist: Andrew “Ace” Walker lives in Prague, Olka., with his wife, Paige, and their two children. A former Major League Baseball player with the Texas Rangers, Walker received a degree in graphic design from the University of Alabama and started Ace Walker Art. He specializes in commercial artwork, large murals and commissioned oil paintings.

Government working together. That's what 9-1-1 directors in Barton County and Rice County are doing to improve services on the eastern side of Barton County and the western side of Rice County. Barton County Communications Director Dena Popp received approval from the commission during Wednesday's meeting to move forward on the joint project. 

"Over the last six months or so, Barton County 9-1-1, myself, has met with and continues to work with the Rice County 9-1-1 director to work on some details on an agreement to utilize each others' towers on the 800Mhz radio system," Popp told the commission.

The issue stems from the digital tone system, or pages that go out to fire and EMS personnel. There have been issues with rural departments not receiving the tones, especially in the Claflin area.

"Those issues have to do with what towers the pagers are hitting off of," Popp explained. "If the pagers scan for towers, and it hits on a tower that's not close, they may or may not get the signal to set off the page."

Claflin Fire Chief Doug Hubbard said the tower in Silica seems to solve the problem, and Barton County would have access to that tower under the new agreement. 

"This is kind of a no brainer," said Commissioner Kirby Krier. "This is awesome when the government works together. It doesn't cost anybody either, that's what's really rare."

The Barton Commission approved the agreement 5-0, and now&nbsp; Rice County 9-1-1 Director Josh Michaelis will take the matter to his commission on Monday. 

"In this agreement, there is no financial obligation to either county, as well as no liability in the event of any man-made or natural-made disaster," said Popp. "I'm very appreciative for the opportunity to work with the Rice County director to come to an agreement on this."

When company is coming for dinner, it always seems like Murphy’s Law kicks in. Keeping a good sense of humor through it all will help. Here are a few food disaster remedies that may help you make it through the holidays.

· When the sauce is too thick, stir in more liquid a tablespoon at a time until it reaches the desired consistency. Just a tablespoon at a time prevents you from having to fix the opposite problem.

· When guests arrive late, turn the oven down to warm and keep the meat and potatoes covered with foil. Turn vegetables off and remove the cover to avoid overcooking. Quickly reheat to serve.

· When there is just too much seasoning in a dish, add more food or liquid to dilute it. Or try to absorb the extra with a peeled potato.

· When the holiday cookies seem to be drying out, add a slice of bread to the container to restore moistness.

· When you forget to chill a fruit salad or beverage, stick it in the freezer for 20 minutes. Be sure to set the timer!

· And finally, when a food burns to the bottom of the pan, place a slice of bread on top of the food and let stand, covered, about five minutes to absorb the burned smell. Then dump out whatever comes easily without scraping.

I hope you are spending time enjoying the family gatherings that surround the holidays. If you have not finished your holiday shopping, remember that time, instead of expensive gifts, may be exactly what your family needs this year. Create your own traditions that exemplify your values. Time spent playing board or card games together; going to a movie or enjoying a sing-a-long can help define the holidays in a way that is meaningful to you.

If one of your goals during the holiday season is to teach your children that we are all part of a larger community, consider delivering meals on wheels or visiting a shut in. Remember that during and just following the holiday season are the most difficult time for almost all individuals who are not with loved ones. Levels of depression rise alarmingly during this time. This is especially true if someone has lost a loved one or has experienced other stressful events such as a divorce or the loss of a job.

Take time to celebrate your family during this holiday season!

On Wednesday, William Newton Hospital’s board of trustees named Brian Barta, CPA as chief executive officer. His appointment as CEO is effective immediately.

“Brian’s unique experience with Critical Access Hospitals as well as his knowledge of WNH make him the right candidate to move the hospital forward. We welcome Brian to the position,” said William Newton Hospital Board Chair Joan Cales.

Out of 51 applicants for the CEO position nationwide, the trustees selected six to interview. The top two candidates were selected for forum-style interviews held last week with William Newton Hospital staff.&nbsp;

Barta joined William Newton Hospital as Chief Financial Officer in August 2018 and has been serving in the interim CEO role since June. In his role as CFO, Barta brought with him a wealth of knowledge about Critical Access Hospitals and experience as a public accountant. Not only was he the controller at another Kansas Critical Access Hospital, but he was a financial auditor for William Newton Hospital during his tenure at Wendling, Noe, Nelson &amp; Johnson from 2010 to 2016.

“I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity to continue serving William Newton Hospital in my new role as Chief Executive Officer. It is our mission to continue the work of our skilled and dedicated healthcare team to provide exceptional patient care to everyone in our community,” said Barta.

Barta said stabilizing hospital finances and building teamwork across the William Newton Hospital network of facilities and clinics are among his first priorities.

“Focusing on financial stability and investing in our staff will help build upon the legacy of William Newton Hospital over the past 95 years," he said.

Barta is a Kansas native, hailing from La Crosse, and a Pittsburg State University graduate. He earned his CPA license in 2011. Barta currently resides in Winfield with his wife Ellie and their three boys.
