The Holy Family Scholars Bowl took place Monday, Jan. 23 with 80 students from Barton County competing. The Holy Family Blue Team placed second in the 6th division and Holy Family Blue tied for third in the 5th division.&nbsp;

Other Great Bend schools that competed were Lincoln, Park, Riley, Jefferson, Central Kansas Christian Academy, St. Joseph of Ellinwood and Holy Family.

The round-robin competition was played according to KSHSAA rules with five players on each team. There were seven rounds played with each round having 16 questions with three questions each from Social Studies, ELA, Math and Science and one question each from Fine Arts, Sports, Miscellaneous and Current Events. Each question was worth 10 points. Questions were based on curriculum and recent events.

A scholarly night at Great Bend's Holy Family School

After graduating from Great Bend High School in 2008, Logan Burns took a
path of working in construction, which led him to the building official with
the City of Great Bend and now leading the entire town’s day-to-day operations as interim
city administrator. 
In his early 30s, Burns was appointed assistant city administrator in November
2022 after serving as building official for three and a half years. Less than a
month after his promotion, the Great Bend City Council approved Burns to become
the interim administrator after Kendal Francis announced his resignation as
administrator. 
Even with the interim title currently, Burns stated the city is not going
backwards while he is in the position, and the administration plans to keep
pushing forward on several projects. 
"I'm taking on some of the stuff Kendal was dealing with," said Burns. "It's been a lot of learning and retaining as much information as you can. I'm managing everything coming in currently. We have a good bunch of department heads. That helps out a lot." 
After obtaining his bachelor’s degree in construction from Kansas State
University, Burns worked for Joiner Construction for more than four years. He was named Great Bend’s Building Official in March 2019. 
Burns has been part of the search process to find the permanent administrator and
said it could be another five to six months before the position is filled.
Strategic Government Resources (SGR) was hired to handle the search and is ironing
out the qualities the city wants in their next administrator. "I think we want a well-rounded knowledge of city government for the position," said Burns. "I think knowing what Great Bend is about and some of the qualities they can bring for economic development opportunities." 
After the job has been posted for a period of time, online interviews will be
scheduled, followed by in-person interviews with finalists.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (1/23)

American Legion Post 320 plays a large role in the Ellinwood community. Ken Lebbin and others are now working on sprucing up the joint a little bit. In the works is a Bell OH-58 Kiowa helicopter from the Vietnam era. Lebbin said, once restored, the chopper will be posted as an eye-catcher on the American Legion property.

"It will be on an elevated mount once it's determined what design that will be, to where people can't be getting in it and messing with it," he said. "The windows will be blacked out. From the exterior, it's the intent for it to look pretty much complete."

The restoration project is expected to cost approximately $7,000, and American Legion Post 320 is currently accepting donations for the restoration. Lebbin, a Vietnam veteran and current Ellinwood city council member, had been looking for a helicopter for the project before this one became available.

"I was really wanting a Huey, but that'd didn't work," he said. "As fate would have it, low and behold, there was this OH-58 Kiowa, which is a scout helicopter, was up in Dorrance."

The previous owner intended to install the chopper atop his liquor store in Russell, complete with a gearbox that allowed the main and rear rotors to move. With his move to California instead, Lebbin and company were able to swoop in for the purchase. Lebbin and John Roth trucked the chopper, which is currently being house in Lebbin's hangar, back to Ellinwood.

"We're just waiting for some nice weather," Lebbin said. "We've been gathering some major parts, and we're about done with that. As the weather gets better, we can do sanding and painting."

The group intends to make the Kiowa appear fully restored from the exterior, complete with replacement U.S. Army logos and other era-based insignia. 

"It'll make an excellent display to tie into the American Legion Post in honor of veterans, as well as it'll be right along the highway as an attraction for people passing through," Lebbin said. "It'll be an addition for the community at large as well."

American Legion Post 320 is a 501(c)(19) non-profit Veterans' Organization, so a tax letter will be provided for anyone who donates. Make checks to the American Legion Helicopter Project. Donations can be mailed to Post 320 Adjutant Dale Kraus, 108 W 11th Street, Ellinwood, KS 67526. Donations can also be given to Lebbin, Post 320 Commander Lloyd Kurtz, or Frank Koelsch.

The Barton Music Department will host the “Jopara Ensemble” as part of an evening of Paraguayan music that will feature a masterclass portion at 4 p.m. in the Chapel and a concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium Feb. 4. String area faculty from Emporia State University and Washburn University will lead everyone in an evening of music and cultural exchange. The masterclass portion will feature the guest musicians as well as Barton students and local community members. The night will culminate with a concert that will include collaborations from Barton's Keyboard Instructor and Director of Accompaniment Dr. Alejandro Avila with the guest musicians in different instrumental combinations featuring Paraguayan music. Barton Music Dept. to present string masterclass and concert

Kansas became the nation's 34th state on Jan. 29, 1861. The next WILD Club program at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center will, in part, celebrate the state's 162nd birthday. Program Specialist Mandy Kern said the January program is a celebration of the state insect, the honeybee.

"On Kansas Day, we'll talk about the honeybee, but we'll also talk about other bees that are native to Kansas," she said. "We'll look at the lifecycle of a honeybee and bees, then we'll make some beeswax lip balm they can take home."

This month's event will take place on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. at the KWEC. December's WILD event featured falconry, and a bird-identifying app was the topic of the October program. A different nature-related topic is featured each month, free of charge.

"The WILD is for any school-age kid and their families," Kern said. "We try to do something once a month that's geared toward getting kids off of their screens and out appreciating nature."

The 2.0-magnitude quake was detected at 8:27 p.m. Sunday in northwest Russell County, the Kansas Geological Survey reported.

Harbor Freight to open a store in Great Bend

The Great Bend High School Forensics team attended the Wichita Area Model UN held in the Rhatigan Student Center at Wichita State University this past Friday, January 20.

The group of twelve students returned with three awards. Senior Maddix Pokorski received the Outstanding Delegate Award. Honorable Mention Delegate Awards were presented to Seniors Eave Taylor and Alondra Alvarez for their work pushing for compromise during the conference.

The GBHS students wrote position papers for their assigned countries, and worked to build consensus for resolutions with other delegations at the mock General Assemblies of the United Nations.

According to Senior Xanna Smith, preparation for the conference was “extremely nerve-wracking at first because this was the first in-person conference the team has attended since 2019, and only the Seniors had any memory of how the conference would actually work. The challenge was trying to communicate with a big group all at once in order to get a say in what happens.”

The students also had the opportunity to explore and discuss global issues and solutions to further make the world a better place.

“We basically spoke about the issues of nuclear disarmament, climate change and human rights in a way that represented the nations we were assigned like the Philippines or Morocco,” Freshman Zachary Hart said. “We had to give that nation's perspective on world issues and work to solve them.”

Not only did Model UN provide students with the opportunity to discuss politics, it provided an interactive environment for students across the area. The conference also gave the students invaluable confidence in public speaking and fostered leadership skills.

“Personally, being in Model UN forced me to come out of my shell,” Sophomore Ailey Williams said. “At first, it was difficult to find people to speak to since I was nervous. But after the first session it was easier to speak to other countries.”

The students learned many lessons beyond public speaking.

“I liked meeting new people and getting to create solutions to problems that are relevant today. When we were in the conference room, debating and writing documents, that’s when it actually felt like we could make a meaningful impact,” Alvarez said. “I also learned that it takes a lot to reach a consensus but that it is acceptable to compromise. ”

Additionally, Model UN can also help students with the college admittance process and scholarship applications.

“Colleges know that it is a team activity that requires collaboration and research. If you are willing to work to solve problems, you are likely to be successful in college,” Forensics coach, Kim Heath said. “Our young people have unique and interesting ideas that deserve to be heard.”

The GBHS Forensic team has a wide variety of goals for the season. On the team there are 35 Panthers who are all looking for opportunities to speak and perform in different ways. They will open their regular season with a tournament in Pratt this Saturday, January 28.

Great Bend forensics students attend WSU Model UN conference

While some folks negatively refer to Kansas as Flyover Country, I consider the term as one of our state’s best descriptors. Because of our location and the presence of features such as Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira Marsh, the migratory bird Central Flyway crosses right over Kansas. Due to this, we see and hear massive migrations each spring and fall that few experience. As a bonus, geese and ducks that nest in Canada fly this far south in the winter before stopping on our lakes and reservoirs to feed and fuel the rest of their journey. Making it a double bonus, bald eagles that also reproduce in the North Country, follow those honking, quacking flocks to hunt weaker, slower members. Growing populations made this a banner year for fans of our national bird.

Kansas Birding on Facebook shared recently completed Christmas Bird Counts (CBC) that documented at least 100 eagles at Kirwin Reservoir. Nearby Webster Lake CBC reported at least 125 bald eagles following Canada goose, snow goose, and duck flocks this winter. If you want to nature watch, it’s worth a drive to view thousands of geese on the water as well as the hundreds circling and landing in surrounding farm fields. Park safely, crank up the heat, roll down the window, and listen to them gabble and honk.

Once you get close enough to the lake to watch massive rafts of water fowl, grab binoculars, spotting scopes, or telescopic lenses to look for accompanying bald eagles. In the past, seeing more than a couple thrilled a birder’s heart, but this year, lucky viewers might see a score or two sitting on ice, picking at remnants of goose or duck or fish, preening to keep feathers in prime condition, or resting between feasts.

On a recent trip to Webster, we first spied several bald eagles perched high in trees lining the north shore camping and boating areas. With distinctive heads and hooked beaks turned to focus on thousands of waterfowl on the lake, they searched for those weak birds that provide a quick protein boost.

We then stopped on a high vantage point that gave an open view of much of the ice-covered water. Once I zoomed in with my telescopic lens to scan the area, I’d see anywhere from 5 to 10 eagles situated not far from each group of hundreds if not thousands of waterfowl.

Later, we investigated the campground/cove areas, pulling into one where we promptly spotted more eagles watching from trees near water. We found a parking spot that offered a distant view of a semi-protected cove and counted 39 eagles in that spot. Once again, they pecked at scraps, preened, and snoozed while a couple of lazy ones sneaked close enough to raise a fuss over a fellow eagle’s food cache.

While eagles have historically followed migrating waterfowl across Kansas during fall and winter, this year’s bird count suggests that conservation efforts have boosted their recovery. It also makes Flyover Country sound so much more intriguing than the original disparaging remark intended.

Holy Family School will host a 5th and 6th Scholars Bowl on Monday, January 23, beginning at 3:00. Schools attending will be Lincoln, Park, Riley, Jefferson, Central Kansas Christian Academy, St. Joseph of Ellinwood and the host team, Holy Family.

The round-robin competition will be played according to KSHSAA rules with five players on each team. There will be seven rounds played with each round having 16 questions with 3 questions each from Social Studies, ELA, Math and Science and one question each from Fine Arts, Sports, Miscellaneous and Current Events. Each question is worth 10 points. Questions are based on curriculum and recent events. 

Scholars Bowl for 5th and 6th grades prepares them for Jr. High and Sr. High Scholars Bowl. These competitions are fun to watch and the school invites the public to attend.

Last year, Barton Community College Athletic Director Trevor Rolfs
officially revealed the college’s plans for a $16.8 million construction and
renovation project. 
The plan, funded through private dollars, calls for a major addition to the
south of the main gym facility to create more space for a growing athletic
department. 
Last Thursday, Rolfs noted he has received several financial commitments for
the project and is working to get the visual concept out to the public. "These improvements are very much needed," said Rolfs. "We're busting at the seams. We need space. We need upgrades if we want to stay relevant across the community college spectrum."

"We have some commitments, but for as big of a project as it is we're going to need more commitments," said Rolfs. "We're continuing down that road. I'm happy to report it's going well."

No structural additions to the main gym have happened since 1995, when the
Kirkman Student Activity Center was established. In 1995, Barton sponsored 13
athletic programs with nearly 230 athletes. Since then, there has been a 90%
increase in the number of athletic participants.&nbsp; Barton now has 22 different sports programs and over 400 students involved with athletics.

Rolfs said growth is a good thing for higher education, especially as it relates to enrollment. As the number of athletic programs at Barton have grown, so too has the need for facility enhancements.

Monday's Weather

Brothers John and Matt Grabbe put Schoenchen, Kansas, near Hays, on the map with two of the top three entries in the 2022 National Wheat Yield Contest. John placed second in Kansas in the winter wheat dryland category with an entry of WestBred WB4422 that yielded 103.24 bushels per acre. Brother Matt took third in the same category with an entry of WestBred WB4792 that yielded 97.88 bushels per acre.

The brothers, who farm as equal partners with their mother, attribute their success this past growing season to the right combination of wheat genetics, farming practices and moisture. A buddy from college who works for WestBred talked the brothers into setting up a wheat plot a few years ago. Last year’s winning entries were the fourth year of having a plot, which the brothers say allows them to try out different varieties and how they respond to their specific farming practices.

This was the first year for planting WB4422 and the third year for planting WB4792, a longer-season variety that allows the brothers to space out their harvest. Both varieties also have good standability and have performed pretty well, even in tough conditions the last couple growing seasons.

This year’s plots were planted on summer fallow ground. The start of the growing season in fall 2021 was decently wet when the brothers drilled wheat so the crop got off to a good start. But from there, the weather turned dry through winter and early spring. Luckily, the area caught some nice rains at the end of April and the beginning of May. Overall, the area received about two-thirds of its normal moisture, but the rain came at exactly the right times.

“We didn’t get a lot of vegetative growth early,” John said. “But the plants were ready to start making seed when it did rain, so they just put all their effort into making seed instead of vegetation.”

When it came time to hop in the combine, the brothers were not sure what to expect but were quickly pleasantly surprised.

“Everybody was going to be pretty happy if the wheat made 45 or 50 bushels per acre, and when we started to combine this year, we were the same way,” John said. “I think it’s a big testament to where genetics have come in the last few years. They’ve just done a better job of breeding to take on that stress and still have that yield potential at the end of the season.”

In addition to variety selection and rainfall, the brothers also attribute this past year’s yields to continued tweaks in their farming practices. They don’t treat their plots differently from what they do across the rest of their operation, maybe pushing a little more nitrogen to catch some additional yield. They also have started focusing more on micronutrients like manganese, zinc and sulfur. No matter the weather, they are committed to their fertility program and applying fungicide.

“We found that, even in a bad year, keeping that plant as healthy as it can be, it’s not searching for nutrients,” Matt said. “In the end, it just needs water.”

This experimentation through variety plots over time is a linchpin to success, not only in the yield contest but also across their operation.

“Don’t be afraid to experiment,” John said. “It does take us some extra time. But, at the end of the day, that little bit of time has made us a lot of money.”

Wheat Scoop: Ellis Co. brothers work together to top 2022 National Wheat Yield Contest

The start of a new year is always a good time to ask the question, “How are we doing?” The we here is K-State Research and Extension. Officials with a statewide network that has provided unbiased, research-based information on issues important to Kansans for 108 years are reaching out to learn more about how the organization can best serve residents of the state.

K-state Research and Extension has released a public survey to ask current and prospective users about the information needs. Gregg Hadley, director of extension, said the brief survey will inform the organization’s efforts to provide education and information in every Kansas county.

“The services we provide are designed to improve Kansans’ lives and communities through education and engagement,” Hadley said. The results of this survey will help our dedicated extension specialists, agents and researchers provide information and assistance that best meet the needs of our K-State Research and Extension users.

K-State Research and Extension has offices in every Kansas county, including extension agents and others who provide information and programs specific to local needs.

KRUG: K-State Research and Extension seeks input from citizens

Rosewood Miracle Workers AKTION Club’s Coloring Book and Crayon Drive, conducted last fall, resulted in record amounts of giving to children across Barton County and beyond. The drive was bolstered by two organizations, UnitedHealthcare and Great Bend High School’s National Honor Society, conducting their own drives to add to this year’s total.

From the collective efforts, Rosewood AKTION Club coloring book and crayon drive netted 1,719 coloring books and 1,719 crayons (the same amount for each item). Crayon donations shattered last year’s record by more than 1,000 boxes. Coloring books exceeded last year’s record by more than 200.

“I’m amazed at the caring and giving spirit of this community,” said Rosewood AKTION Club sponsor Frankie Pelster. “Each year we conduct this drive for children in need and each year we seem to break records in donations. We could not carry forward this important drive without the participating by all the people and organizations that have gotten behind our drive each year. Thank you everyone for your participation.”

Items from the annual drive, which wrapped up at the end of November, have been donated to organizations in Barton County. Rosewood AKTION Club split the deliveries among Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington; Saint Francis Ministries, Great Bend, and to more than a dozen area preschools and daycares.

 </figure>BUSINESS NEWSStory by: Michael Dawes, director of PR, Rosewood ServicesRosewood Miracle Workers AKTION Club’s Coloring Book and Crayon Drive, conducted last fall, resulted in record amounts of giving to children across Barton County and beyond. The drive was bolstered by two organizations, UnitedHealthcare and Great Bend High School’s National Honor Society, conducting their own drives to add to this year’s total.From the collective efforts, Rosewood AKTION Club coloring book and crayon drive netted 1,719 coloring books and 1,719 crayons (the same amount for each item). Crayon donations shattered last year’s record by more than 1,000 boxes. Coloring books exceeded last year’s record by more than 200.“I’m amazed at the caring and giving spirit of this community,” said Rosewood AKTION Club sponsor Frankie Pelster. “Each year we conduct this drive for children in need and each year we seem to break records in donations. We could not carry forward this important drive without the participating by all the people and organizations that have gotten behind our drive each year. Thank you everyone for your participation.”Items from the annual drive, which wrapped up at the end of November, have been donated to organizations in Barton County. Rosewood AKTION Club split the deliveries among Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington; Saint Francis Ministries, Great Bend, and to more than a dozen area preschools and daycares.For the fourth consecutive year, the coloring book drive became a fun competition as Rosewood AKTION Club challenged Rosewood employees to generate donations for the drive. Community donations were counted in the AKTION Club’s collection, while Rosewood employees in Day Services, Residential and Administration each collected coloring books and crayons for their respective teams. Rosewood AKTION Club unseated Day Services as champion, thanks to the large community donations received this year. Rosewood AKTION Club accounted for 1,019 coloring books and 1,224 boxes of crayons. Rosewood Day Services, the three-time defending champion, gave a resilient effort with 564 coloring books and 342 boxes of crayons donated.“We have fun with the competition, but we all win with this drive every year when children are able to receive these donated items at their trying times,” said Pelster. “Our AKTION Club members are so thankful to Rosewood employees and our community members for stepping up to bring smiles to children’s faces.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Rosewood AKTION Club is an affiliate of the national Kiwanis organization that promotes service in action for people with developmental disabilities. The area club allows Rosewood representatives to be actively involved in the community and to positively impact the lives of others.
