On Friday, Jan. 13, Gavin Allen was back in District Court for sentencing. Last September, a Barton County jury convicted Allen of Felony DUI and Transporting an Open Container.

At sentencing, Allen was assigned a criminal history score of “A” which is the highest score possible under Kansas sentencing laws and this was Allen’s fourth DUI conviction in the last nine years.

Allen was subject to two special sentencing rules. The first applies to felony DUIs; however, the second applied because Allen was on parole for a Sedgwick County case when he committed the Barton County DUI.

The maximum possible sentence for a Felony DUI conviction is one year in the county jail with no entitlement or presumption of probation and a mandatory fine of $2,500. The minimum sentence for a Felony DUI conviction is 90 days in the county jail (which a defendant must serve the 90 days) and the same mandatory fine of $2,500.

After hearing the arguments of the parties regarding sentencing, District Court Judge Carey Hipp sentenced Allen to one year in the county jail, she suspended that sentence and granted Allen probation after Allen served the mandatory minimum sentence of 90 days, and the mandatory fine of $2,500.

At sentencing the State of Kansas was represented by Barton County Attorney M. Levi Morris. The Defendant was represented by Heidi Farnsworth.

Barton Co. jury sentencing of man's 4th DUI in 9 years

Good, old-fashioned detective work. That's how Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir described the recent arrest on a 42-year-old murder in the county. Bellendir shared some more details of the investigation of the crime during an appearance on the "County Edition" show on KVGB 1590 AM/95.5 FM.

"In 1981 and 82, these guys, the original investigators, were real close, but they just couldn't quite shove it over the edge," he said. "There's been a change in attitudes in how you investigate these sorts of things. My guys were able to get some more information that helped clear up some stuff."

Bellendir was just a senior in high school in January 1980 when Mary Robin Walter was found shot in a now-defunct trailer park west of Great Bend. Investigators at the time developed a suspect, but the case eventually went cold, and the case files remained in a file cabinet as Bellendir began his tenure at the sheriff's office.

Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and Det. Sgt. Adam Hales was forced out of work for approximately two weeks in April 2022. He returned to light duty and asked Bellendir if he could reexamine the case.

"I actually chuckled and said, 'Good luck. You and every other detective that's ever worked in this office,'" Bellendir said. "I've seen this thing come and go since the early 1980s."

As lead investigator, Hales was joined by detectives David Paden, Bryan Volkel, and Alex Lomas, as well as Patrol Sgt. Travis Doze. Together, they pieced together the files.

"The biggest problem we ran into, guys would make copies of a statement and then, instead of keeping that out of the case, it got mixed back in with the case," said Bellendir. "I had one guy in the detective division, that's all he did was make a comprehensive - we're talking 3-ring binders, four inches thick - that have the documents and the interviews, and all the material that is relevant to that case."

Bellendir said the department lucked out with no new major cases that might have forced the old investigation onto the back burner. Instead, the detectives made their case and presented it to the Barton County Attorney's Office in October 2022. On Dec. 8, 68-year-old Steven Hanks of Burden was arrested without incident on charges of second-degree murder.

Investigators held a press conference on the case the following day, and Bellendir said, that too, has resulted in more details about the case.

"People saw that press release, and we had at least two, they weren't witnesses to the crime, but they were witnesses that had information about the case," he said. "They had been interviewed back in the 1980s, but the interviews either weren't recorded or written down, or they were lost over time."

Hanks remains incarcerated in the Barton County jail awaiting trial. The case is scheduled for a review hearing in the Barton County District Court on Jan. 26 at 8 a.m.

Barton Community College presented a check to Fort Riley soldiers at the end of the fall semester for $3,250 raised through the Wounded Warrior Golf Scramble fundraiser that was held in September.

The annual tournament is held at the Rolling Meadows Golf Course near Fort Riley and all the money goes directly to supporting wounded soldiers at Fort Riley.

Sponsors included the Barton men’s and women’s golf team, David and Dana Foss, Doug and Michelle Kaiser, Walmart of Junction City, Briggs Motors of Manhattan, Cycle City Harley Davidson of Junction City and Rolling Meadows Golf Course.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has closed both the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-70 between WaKeeney and the Colorado border. The closure is due to adverse weather conditions, vehicle crashes blocking the roadway, and limited accommodations and truck parking.

Snow and ice are also affecting many secondary roadways in northwest Kansas. Motorists are advised not to use secondary roads to avoid interstate closures.

I-70 is open in both directions to the Colorado border

At Wednesday's Barton County Commission meeting, the body approved a 12-month contract for use of a county building. Central Kansas Partnership, Inc.'s Rise Up HEART will pay the county $400 per month for rent of an office in the building at 1213 Baker in Great Bend. 

HEART stands for Health Equity Action Recovery Team. Rise Up Coordinator Amy Ferguson told the commission the new program's goal is to continue connecting people to resources as a mobile meeting. One emphasis is COVID vaccination and vaccination information. The group will partner with the Barton County Health Department quarterly to offer COVID and flu vaccinations, as well as STD testing at some of its recovery sites around the county. The new program also promotes a healthier lifestyle by removing the barrier of transportation to things like appointments and meetings.

"It's also that next level of recovery," Ferguson said. "It's more than just providing information. We are able to remove the barrier of transportation. It's just hard to keep moving forward when you're always trying to find a way to get there."

This year, the program has given 38 rides to 12-step meetings, connected five people to intermediate treatment, and six for COVID vaccinations.

"It's more than just rides," said Ferguson. "In the vehicle, we are also having meetings. Maybe I can provide a supportive peer, we can be talking about mental health, we can be talking about our recovery, we're talking about health and wellness in general. The time is well-used while we are in the vehicle."

With the new year, we often think about things to change or update for the current year. One of those things might include your budget. With the changes in prices recently, it might be time to take a look at updating your budget. Also, with recent price increases, it may feel like your paycheck is not going as far as it used to or that your income is dropping. K-State Research and Extension has valuable financial tools to help you navigate your family finances.

Recently, K-State Specialist, Elizabeth Kiss made some suggestions to help families cope with higher prices. She suggested ways in which families can make priorities and decide with intentionality where families want to spend their money. It is eye opening to sit down and make a list of where the money is going. Sometimes we don’t realize how those quick trips for coffee or the convenience store add up. Or maybe it is online subscriptions or shopping that sabotages your budget? The first step in coming up with a realistic budget is to determine where the money is going.

The next step is making decisions about what to keep and what can be cut. Here is where Kiss suggests you get creative. Some suggestions might be to buy things when they are on special or using coupons. There are many apps that can help you save money by utilizing digital coupons as well. Is there anyway to be more efficient with transportation costs such as carpooling, walking, planning errands to be more efficient with time and gas? Kiss also emphasized keeping up with car maintenance to avoid costly repairs later.

Besides looking at expenses, one can also look at a budget to see if there is anyway to increase income. However, you have to make sure that you will actually be bringing in that income and there are no extra expenses with a second job. Kiss, explained that if people must hire childcare, for example, while they work the second job, it may not be a financially sound decision.

KOERNER: New year, new budget?

Clara Barton Medical Center is pleased to announce that Tyler Brown, MLT has been promoted to the position of Laboratory Director. Brown has been an employee at Clara Barton since 2017, and a practicing Medical Lab Technician since 2018.

Brown was born and raised in Great Bend, KS. After high school, she attended Barton Community College, receiving her Associate of Science and Associate of Medical Laboratory Technology, and went on to become ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) Certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician.

Starting as an entry-level Phlebotomist/Laboratory Aide 6 years ago, she was then promoted to Medical Lab Technician after receiving her ASCP certification. In May of 2022, Brown was selected to succeed long-time Laboratory Director, Myrtle Whitmore, after her retirement and has now assumed full director responsibilities.

“It is an honor to be selected as Myrtle’s successor,” said Brown. “I love being part of the Clara Barton family and am excited to lead my lab team to continue creating great patient experiences, one lab test at a time.”

In addition to her recent promotion at Clara Barton, Brown also recently completed the Kansas Hospital Association Leadership Institute and was selected as a recipient of the Great Bend Tribune’s 20 under 40 Award. She is an adjunct instructor for the MLT program and volunteers on the Board of Laboratory Directors at BCC.

“I love being in the medical field,” said Brown. “The thing I find most rewarding about it is our patients. They remind me each and every day why my job matters.”

Brown currently resides in Hoisington with her fiancé, Trever Schremmer. They are set to be married in May of this year and have three fur children – two Great Danes, Hera and Apollo, and a cattle dog named Kora. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking and traveling with her fiancé, especially trips that involve riding their side-by-side.

“Having to say ‘Happy Retirement’ to our beloved, long-time director Myrtle Whitmore was difficult, but fortunately, Tyler was eager to advance in the leadership ranks within Clara Barton,” said Jim Blackwell, Clara Barton Medical Center President/CEO. “We are happy to announce Tyler’s promotion and are confident in her capabilities, having been mentored by Myrtle and our exceptional lab technicians. Her compassion and positivity align perfectly with the culture of great employees our community has grown to depend on. Brown has been an employee at Clara Barton since 2017, and a practicing Medical Lab Technician since 2018.Brown was born and raised in Great Bend, KS. After high school, she attended Barton Community College, receiving her Associate of Science and Associate of Medical Laboratory Technology, and went on to become ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) Certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician.Starting as an entry-level Phlebotomist/Laboratory Aide 6 years ago, she was then promoted to Medical Lab Technician after receiving her ASCP certification. In May of 2022, Brown was selected to succeed long-time Laboratory Director, Myrtle Whitmore, after her retirement and has now assumed full director responsibilities.“It is an honor to be selected as Myrtle’s successor,” said Brown. “I love being part of the Clara Barton family and am excited to lead my lab team to continue creating great patient experiences, one lab test at a time.”In addition to her recent promotion at Clara Barton, Brown also recently completed the Kansas Hospital Association Leadership Institute and was selected as a recipient of the Great Bend Tribune’s 20 under 40 Award. She is an adjunct instructor for the MLT program and volunteers on the Board of Laboratory Directors at BCC.“I love being in the medical field,” said Brown. “The thing I find most rewarding about it is our patients. They remind me each and every day why my job matters.”Brown currently resides in Hoisington with her fiancé, Trever Schremmer. They are set to be married in May of this year and have three fur children – two Great Danes, Hera and Apollo, and a cattle dog named Kora. One blood donation can save up to three lives. Taking the time to donate
blood is not only a great way to give back, but someday you or a loved one may need to rely on donated blood. 
As always, healthcare providers are encouraging donations, especially with January
being National Blood Donor Month. 
Kristi Engle, a lab supervisor at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned,
said blood donations have been okay, but a drop usually comes as summer
approaches with schedules get busier. "The COVID-19 pandemic didn't help with blood donations," said Engle. "There was a critically low crisis for blood during COVID. Sometimes you had to get approval from the American Red Cross to get additional units. Lately, donations seem to be okay, but you can certainly expect a drop in the upcoming months." 
One of the hardships of blood shortages is small, rural hospitals having to
ship patients to providers with a larger supply of blood. Sometimes, the
shortages have forced providers to treat the underlying issue instead of “putting a Band-Aid
on it.” 
"Blood helps you for the time being, but if there's an underlying problem you have to figure that out," said Engle. "It almost challenges the providers to think more critically on what is actually causing the low blood." 
The next local American Red Cross blood drive is Monday, Jan. 23 from 11:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. at St. Rose Auditorium, 1412 Baker Street in Great
Bend. In Larned, a blood drive will be hosted Feb. 17 at the
Knights of Columbus Hall, 1216 M Road, from 12 p.m. - 6 p.m.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.9% in December. This is an increase from 2.8% in November and an increase from 2.8% in December 2021.

The unemployment rate in Barton County is up to 2.7 percent from 2.6 in November. The jobless rate also increased slightly in Pawnee and Rice Counties. Rush County saw a slight decrease last month.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 500 from November. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 1,100 over the month, while government decreased by 600.

“Kansas experienced strong job growth over the year, with the private sector adding 37,900 jobs,” said Labor Economist Nathan Kessler. “Industries that saw robust growth include manufacturing and education and health services, collectively adding 15,900 jobs over the year.”

Since December 2021 Kansas' seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 42,300. This change is due to an increase of 37,900 private sector jobs and an increase of 4,400 government jobs.

The 2023 schedule is out, the Great Bend Bat Cats begin their seventh
year with a season-opener on June 2. The Sunflower Collegiate
League has rebranded to the Jayhawk Collegiate League. After the 2018 season, the Jayhawk split up, leading to the absence of the league for four seasons. After some realignment, the Jayhawk Collegiate League has reformed and will include Great Bend, Derby Twins, Haysville Aviators, Hutchinson Monarchs, Kansas Cannons, Kingman Islanders and the Newton Sluggin' Rebels.

With a new look, Bat
Cats’ General Manager Roger Ward was pleased to announce that Great Bend will
host the league’s All-Star Game in July.

"Hosting the All-Star Game is big for Great Bend," said Ward. "It's a testament to the city and everyone involved making improvements to Al Burns Field. We're hoping to put on a good show and that it's going to lead to bigger events."

Updates to Al Burns Field at Veterans Park in Great Bend were completed last
summer, the first major renovations to the field since the mid-1970s. The
grandstands were repainted, new dugouts were built, a new backstop was
installed and a new netting replaced the old chain-link fence. New light poles
were installed around the ballfield in 2020. 
Ward is hopeful a new scoreboard will be in place for this summer’s season. 
"We're about 99.9% sure that we're going to get a new 28' x 8' scoreboard in left-center field," said Ward. "We're working hard to complete the project the city did last year with the new dugouts and backstop. We want to get those painted."

Ward is working to get padding on the backstop and new tarps for the field. Ward mentioned he is also considering extending the upgraded right field wall to create a high center field wall for a hitter's eye.

The Bat Cats are currently selling tickets for their annual beef fundraiser. For $20, you can purchase a ticket for one of seven beef bundles. There will be 300 tickets sold. Working to get new scoreboard at GB's Al Burns Field

That statement from a young woman’s three-year old daughter helped launch a business of producing handmade soaps and other skin care products in rural Kansas.&nbsp;

Dixie Pachta is founder and owner of Rose Creek Suds. Her products not only avoid the allergic reactions suffered by her daughter, they provide the wonderful scents and luxurious lather that her customers enjoy. She also supports worthy local causes.&nbsp;

Pachta grew up in the Linn and Washington area. She met and married Andrew who is from Linn. They attended Kansas State University where Dixie studied accounting and Andrew studied animal sciences.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After graduation, they moved to Andrew’s grandparents’ farm near the rural community of Munden, population 96 people. Now, that’s rural. For 10 years, Dixie Pachta worked in tax preparation and now does internal audits for a bank in Belleville.&nbsp;

At Christmas time in 2020, Andrew bought a bar of soap that he thought sounded appealing. “We were disappointed in it,” Dixie said. She remembered her grandmother had made soap at home, so Dixie decided to see if she could make a better soap herself.&nbsp;

“Both of our grandmothers made lard soap for laundry purposes,” Dixie said. “We still have chunks of her laundry soap.” Dixie also knew that several members of her family had issues with sensitive skin.&nbsp;

Dixie Pachta researched the process of making soap by hand and gave it a try. When her three-year old daughter used the soap and found that it didn’t sting her hands like the store products did, Dixie knew she was on the right track. Soon, friends and family members wanted the products, so Dixie started a business venture.&nbsp;

Because they live on Rose Creek, she named the business Rose Creek Suds. Today, Rose Creek Suds produces handmade soaps and other products, such as candles, wax melts, face mists and sugar scrubs.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The key base product for many of her soaps is lard, as pioneer women used more than a century ago. “Lard soap is more creamy and it’s especially good for extra sensitive skin,” Dixie said. One of their family members raised hogs as a 4-H project so the Pachtas were able to access lard directly.&nbsp;

“I add various scents and castor oil and coconut oil for more bubbles,” Dixie said. In January 2021, she began taking her products to craft shows. Her products are sold locally and online, and have gone as far away as Florida, Canada, and Australia.&nbsp;

“I love to experiment,” Dixie said. “What can I use to make it smell better or have a smoother lather?” Her Lumberyard soap and scents with cedar, lavender and musk have been really popular with guys.&nbsp;

One day a friend of Dixie’s gave her a supply of glass jars for recycling, but Dixie wasn’t sure what to do with them. Then Dixie learned about her nephew’s friend who was having many challenges.&nbsp;

He was an eighth-grade boy who came to the U.S. from Bulgaria and spoke no English.&nbsp;&nbsp;The boy was in the process of being adopted by a local pastor’s family when he started having a sinus infection – not realizing that the very serious infection was going into his brain.&nbsp;

“His adoption was finalized in adoption court one morning, and by midnight of that day, he was having his brain operated on at Children’s Mercy,” Dixie said. The boy is now recuperating and is getting fitted with a skullcap.&nbsp;

Dixie decided to use those glass jars to make a special product to sell as a fundraiser to help with this young man’s medical expenses. These are candles with a red, white, and blue design, using the scents of Roarin’ Raspberry, Whistlin’ Wicks, and Bloomin’ Blueberry.&nbsp;

The product is called Red, White, and Believin.’ “I’m willing to make special products for other fundraisers too,” Dixie said.&nbsp;

A new gym floor and seating have made a world of difference inside the
Kirkman Center on the campus of Barton Community College. Over the Christmas break, SOPA Inc. installed plastic-material bleachers on the
west, north and south sides of the upper level of the main gym. 

In 2023, fans
have not only appreciated the upgraded look but also the accessibility with
more ADA compliant bleachers, according to Barton Athletic Director Trevor
Rolfs. "From an aesthetic point of view to being handicap accessible, it was very much needed," said Rolfs. "It looks great in there. The seats are comfortable. I couldn't be more pleased with how it came out."

Rolfs was a guest on Sports Day on 1590 KVGB &amp; 95.5 FM Thursday where he thanked the Larry and Kathy Schugart family for their generosity in
getting the wooden bleachers replaced.

The Kirkman Endowment through the Barton Community College Foundation
contributed $100,000 for the bleacher replacement. While the Foundation cannot
fund athletic projects, the gym is used for graduations, community events and
other college functions. 
The west side seating includes seatbacks and armrests. The main gym floor was

Snow across portions of Kansas provided relief to landscapes during an abnormally dry December.&nbsp;&nbsp;

But Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham said yards may need another shot of moisture to alleviate stress in lawns and gardens.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“A good, deep watering with moisture reaching at least a foot down into the soil is much better than several light sprinklings that just wet the top portions of the soil,” Upham said. “A deep watering will ensure that the majority of roots have access to water.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Upham urged homeowners to test the moisture content in their yard’s soil by pushing a metal rod, wooden dowel, electric fence post or similar item into the ground. “Dry soil is much harder to push through than wet,” he said. Measure how far down the implement goes to determine the amount of moisture is in the soil.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Although all perennial plants benefit from moist soils before winter, it is especially important for newly planted or over-seeded lawns, as well as newly transplanted trees and shrubs due to their limited root systems,” Upham said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Even trees and shrubs planted within the last 2-3 years are more sensitive to drought than a well-established plant. Evergreens are more at risk because moisture is lost from the foliage.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Upham shared a few tips for watering common areas of the yard:

 <li>Trees and shrubs planted within the last year.&nbsp;Drill a small hole in a five gallon bucket near the bottom, then fill the bucket and let the water dribble out slowly next to the tree. Refill the bucket once so that you apply 10 gallons. Larger trees planted 2-3 years prior may require more water. </li><li>Large trees. Using a soaker hose, circle the trunk one-half the distance to the dripline, or the outermost reach of branches. On smaller trees, you may need to circle the tree several times so that only soil which as tree roots will be watered. &nbsp;</li><li>Newly established bed or foundation plantings.&nbsp;Hook the beginning and end of a soaker hose to a Y-adapter to equalize pressure, which encourages more uniform watering. &nbsp;</li><li>Fall planted or overseeded lawns.&nbsp;Use an overhead sprinkler. Watering to a depth of 12 inches is more difficult; try to reach at least six inches deep.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>

BOOR: Watering in the winter

At its meeting on Jan. 10, the Institutional Actions Council of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) approved continuing the accreditation of Barton Community College without concern.

This approval comes following a site visit from a peer review team this past October. A team of five reviewers from as many states visited the Barton County campus to review Barton operations and met with members of the Barton administration, staff, faculty and students.

“Barton Community College continues to excel as an institution,” the review team stated in its final report. “The College’s mission is embodied in numerous learning opportunities provided for its students and community members.”

Barton Chief Accreditation Officer Myrna Perkins led Barton’s preparations for this institution-wide initiative.

“The Barton family’s engagement in this visit brought the Barton story to life,” she said. “We put ‘community’ in community college, and they thought that was top-notch.”

Perkins said that Barton’s reaffirmation is critical because it allows participation in federal financial aid programs and helps ensure courses meet the accreditations standards of quality, which allows students to transfer earned credits to other institutions more easily.

The final step in the reaffirmation process requires Barton to report its choice of accreditation pathway to HLC for the next reaffirmation, which will be held during the 2032-2033 academic year. The college’s accreditation committee will submit a recommendation for approval by the Board of Trustees at the Jan. 24 meeting.

Area wildlife needs help with its habitat. Area landowners may need help creating some of that habitat. The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism (KDWPT) is offering financial assistance to create environments where wild animals can thrive. Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Manager Jason Wagner said more habitat would not only help the animals, but also benefits hunters.

"Get some of that habitat on the ground," he said. "We're not going to improve our pheasant, quail, turkey, and deer populations if we don't start moving toward some of that, especially with CRP, a lot of that getting broken up now. Some of these habitat practices are going to become pretty critical to help our wildlife along."

KDWPT offers a two-page list of ways it can help offset some costs to increase habitat, from grazing land and hayland practices like prescribed burning and invasive tree control. Leaving brood strips, or strips of untilled, unsprayed crop at least 30 feet in width, can net landowners $60 an acre. KDWPT also offers incentives for CRP and wetland practices.

"These are practices where we're trying to get landowners to try and do some of this habitat improvement to help the pheasant population, help the quail, help the turkeys, help the deer, whatever that landowner is particularly interested in," Wagner said.

Those interested in the Habitat First program can contact their local wildlife biologist to determine a course of action and incentives involved. Wagner said it might take several of the practices to establish good habitat.

The City of Hoisington received financial assistance from the Kansas
Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) this month for asbestos mitigation on the
abandoned Windgate apartments on north Vine Street. 
KDHE will provide $75,000 to Hoisington for the asbestos mitigation. Once that
task is finished, the city can move forward with the demolition of five
buildings that housed 30 apartment units. 
Hoisington City Manager Jonathan Mitchell said the state is requesting
contractor bids for the project. "The state is soliciting interest from qualified contractors to do that," said Mitchell. "That will be through the state. Then they will contact us and let us know what our obligation will be on the asbestos mitigation. We're excited to see progress." 
The City of Hoisington acquired the vacant apartments in January 2022 for
$200,000 and considered demolishing the structures to create housing lots. 
After hearing proposals to renovate two of the old apartment buildings into a
child daycare home, the Hoisington City Council voted in May 2022 to nix the
idea and have the building demolished instead.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The cat is out of the bag. And the ponies, unicorns, and a host of other characters. Wednesday evening, it was announced the first-ever FurryFansago event is coming to the Great Bend Events Center in July. Founder Kristian Rivera always planned for glitz and glam, but the first convention will be much more subtle. After years of thinking about doing a convention locally, it is finally becoming a reality.

"I've always just imagined a place where people can come together and celebrate not only the fandom, but who they are," he said. "This is much more than just a furry fandom. It's an LGBTQ community. It's a celebration of art, designs, and I wanted to bring that to Kansas. I wanted to give people a chance to be a part of something that's not in the big city, something they can do locally."

Wednesday's announcement made statewide headlines. Rivera expected backlash with the announcement but is pleased the event is finally moving forward.

"Public opinion was pretty much about where I thought it would be," he said. "The amount of returns I've gotten from the hidden furry community, the people behind the scenes, they've been sending me emails giving me lots of support. The open, out-loud people who are against the community, I 100 percent expected that. But given the support from the inner community, and even from our community abroad, I'm excited for this."

The 3-day event is scheduled for July 21-23 at the Events Center. A schedule of events is still in the works, though Rivera would like to have a speaker of some sort. A small number of vendors will be present for the event, which Rivera said will be similar to a Comic-Con. Security at the door will check identification, and another security guard will be inside the facility. Costumes are encouraged but not required for the first convention. The idea is expression with the safety of anonymity. 

"That's basically the whole idea behind it, the ability for people to create and design their own characters," said Rivera. "Most of the furry community are normal, everyday people. The only difference is they love to come together and draw animals, or celebrate animals in that sense. We're not doing anything weird with the animals, we're not doing anything weird with the suits. It's all just normal people coming together to have a good time and celebrate the furry community."

Rivera is hoping for 20-30 attendees for the inaugural events. Admission tickets are $25 and will soon be available on the group's website.
