exception drought in Southwest, South central, and part of Southeast
Kansas.&nbsp; On the positive side, drought
has disappeared from much of Northeast and part of East Central Kansas.&nbsp; Parts of North Central Kansas have improved
to abnormally dry.&nbsp; Any progress in the
state helps.&nbsp; The six to ten-day outlook
(February 28 to March 4) indicates a 40 to 50% chance of leaning above normal temperatures
and 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (March 2 to
8) indicates near normal temperatures and a 33 to 50% chance of leaning to
above normal precipitation.&nbsp; Normal
precipitation starts to increase in March so maybe there’s a slight glimmer of
hope.

Like many sectors of the economy,
agriculture faces a severe shortage of workers in all aspects of the
industry.&nbsp; From farmers and ranchers to
co-ops and feedlots; service technicians and all aspects of technology; food
processing and every aspect of ag business there is overall an aging workforce
nearing retirement and a shortage of trained, skilled workers wanting to make
the industry a career.&nbsp; There are many
reasons.&nbsp; For those wishing to become
producers, costs can be prohibitive without family farm/ranch connections and
often times even then.&nbsp; While some
careers are located in areas with larger populations, say Wichita or Kansas
City, many career opportunities are located in rural areas with sparser
populations.&nbsp; Adding to the dilemma in
rural areas is a lack of decent, affordable housing in many areas, coupled with
an absence of what consider necessary amenities for a good lifestyle.&nbsp; From a lack of nearby medical care to
shopping, educational, and cultural opportunities, many are leery of a rural
lifestyle.&nbsp; Part of this is perception
and part is reality.&nbsp; The reality part
can be addressed through commitment of time, and money from local to state and
federal assistance which is slowly starting to happen.&nbsp; The perception part must be overcome through
education.&nbsp; People can learn career
skills wither on the job or through two- and four-year schooling.&nbsp; 

There
is, however, one huge obstacle in making progress in obtaining the necessary –
labels. These include how much of society labels the agriculture industry and
what exactly it is; how certain sectors of agriculture label urban individuals;
and how “city folk” label themselves in relation to their ability to work in
agriculture.&nbsp; In fairness, agriculture
has spent time, energy, and resources over the last decade reaching out to the
nonagricultural parts of society and much more willing to hire/train people
without an ag background as long they possess the proper work ethic.&nbsp; Higher education from technical and community
colleges to land grant universities and trying to educate the general public as
to the opportunities and high school counselors to consider careers in ag.

What’s
the purpose of today’s column?&nbsp; Whether a
high school senior in a local USD or someone who wants a career change or is
underemployed, explore the possible career choices in agriculture.&nbsp; From farmhand to working in a feedlot, from
precision ag to marketing, there are excellent career opportunities across all
aspects of ag.

🎤Kansas Strong show - Oil & gas education

Barton Community College invites students, faculty, staff, and community members to a celebratory groundbreaking event for the College’s new Ag and Transportation Complex at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at the future site of the complex on the east side of campus. Parking will be available in the east lot outside of the Technical Building.

Upon completion, the facility will be home to new classrooms for high-demand programs including Agriculture Business Management, Crop Protection, Beef Cattle Production, and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). It will also house the highly anticipated Case New Holland (CNH) Top Tech Industrial Training program.

The estimated construction cost of $3.6 million is funded by a 1:1 matching grant of federal stimulus funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) issued by the Kansas Department of Commerce and private donations. The State of Kansas has also approved tax credits to be used for capital improvements by community and technical colleges. These 60 percent tax credits are available first-come, first-served.

Harbin Construction out of Salina was awarded the contract for the project and will begin construction immediately. The project is projected to be completed in early 2024.

Barton Community College to host groundbreaking for Ag Complex

Great Bend USD 428 joins schools across the state and nation to celebrate Public Schools Week, Feb. 27 – March 3, a week designated to highlight the vital role local public schools play in both our students’ and nation’s future.

“We’ll take any opportunity to celebrate the staff, students, and families of USD 428,” said Khris Thexton, superintendent of USD 428. “Take a look inside any building, any classroom, and you’ll find dedicated professionals who are working every day to nurture students and positively impact their growth and development.”

One highlight that captures the success of USD 428 is the steady improvement in graduation rates over the past decade. From 2010 to 2022, Great Bend High School’s graduation rate improved from 80.7% to 92.8%.

“Improved graduation rates are a district-wide accomplishment,” said Thexton. “A strong foundation for learning begins in preschool and continues throughout a student’s educational career. Seeing more students successfully reach this milestone takes intentional and focused academic support at every level and especially by the dedicated staff at GBHS.”

Across the nation, public schools are providing educational opportunities for more than 50 million students inside their school buildings. According to the Learning First Alliance, nine out of every ten students in the US attend public schools. Public Schools Week 2023 (#PSW23) is part of a larger campaign - #HerefortheKids - one that brings together families, educators, and community members to shine a light on local public schools and share the stories of the positive things happening in classrooms and school buildings nationwide.

As USD 428 shares positive highlights on social media this week, they invite the community to reach out to teachers and school staff and thank them for their efforts to make Great Bend Public Schools a great place to learn and grow.

USD 428 in Great Bend celebrates Public Schools Week

Central Kansans probably didn’t realize it at the time, but in the early days of establishing the Golden Belt Community Foundation (GBCF) they hit the trifecta.

	While countless local individuals and businesses are responsible for GBCF’s success, three groups of community members came together at just the right time. They are the 37 founding donors, first board of directors and the Kansas Health Foundation (KHF).

	GBCF’s steady growth over the years has led to the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Legacy Award, which was bestowed Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Great Bend Events Center. This honor focuses on individuals and entities that have made “an indelible mark on the fabric of our community.”

	Christy Tustin, executive director, said the three groups that helped create GBCF “set us up for success. This started in 2001 when the Kansas Health Foundation became involved in community philanthropy by helping build and support community foundations.

	“The Kansas Health Foundation said ‘if you raise $300,000 in seed money, we will match it dollar for dollar.’ The founding donors stepped up and made this happen.”

	GBCF was incorporated in 1996 but there was no office location yet. However, bylaws and other administrative work were completed and Janet Siebert was the first part-time volunteer director; Catherine Brening came next.

	The first office was at 1307 Williams - the Chamber’s previous location and GBCF’s current site. “GBCF bought our current location from the Chamber as an investment in ourselves and our communities; we have come full circle,” Tustin said.

	The investment seems to have paid off. Today, total assets are approximately $30 million, with more than 200 funds under management. Grants totaling $10.8 million have been awarded since 2002 and $1.8 million raised over nine years of Giving Tuesdays, supporting more than 100 organizations and funds. Grants have reached into nearly every community in Barton, Pawnee, Rush and Stafford counties.

	“These numbers point to our legacy,” Tustin commented. “We are giving back to our communities in a big way. Just last year, $2 million in grants was awarded to local non-profit agencies, parks, playgrounds, schools, senior programs, food banks and many other entities in the social-services network.

	“The non-profits are the boots on the ground that make things happen. We connect all these pieces that make up a community.”

	Examples of GBCF’s recent programs include the Come Home Reverse Scholarship program that strives to recruit professionals to the area and uses funds to help pay off their student loans, and the Farmland Giving Program that allows gifts of farmland to be donated and managed by GBCF with the income supporting the charitable causes chosen by the donor.

	In addition, GBCF partnered with Great Bend Economic Development in applying for tax credits for construction of the new childcare facility.

	“GBCF was able to accomplish all this by encouraging donations at all levels,” Tustin noted. “No gift is too small to create an impact. Over the years, we have received gifts of cash, land/real estate, stock, life insurance and coin collections.”

	Tustin emphasized that the process for giving is easy, no matter the size of the gift.

	“The simplicity of donating is one of our benefits,” she said. “You can make one gift and support all the things you care about. We handle all the paperwork.”

	GBCF is the only charitable entity in the area that encourages broad community-endowment building. This ensures resources are available for needs that can’t be envisioned today.

	The Forever Initiative is one example of communities working to leverage matching funds and secure funding for the future. For instance, Rush County and Rozel/Burdett built broad endowments to provide funding to their ever-changing community needs.

KHF/local leaders The Kansas Health Foundation GROW project launched in 1999 in an effort to keep philanthropic dollars in Kansas. KHF funding supports: match challenges and assets growth; health and wellness funds; philanthropic leadership training; and preparation for the complexities awaiting foundations in the future.

	The 37 founding donors, which include 27 individuals and 10 businesses, met the first challenge by raising the seed money.

	“I am grateful and owe much of our success to the KHF for its thoughtful insight and to our first board of directors for taking on this challenge,” Tustin commented. “We appreciate those first donors who invested with the hope and promise that GBCF would become a sustainable resource.

	“Today, I know that GBCF has met that expectation and will continue to build its legacy as new opportunities to build community wealth and philanthropy present themselves.”

	Current board members are: Past President Leonard Bunselmeyer, Great Bend; President Sheryl Schamaun, Great Bend; Vice President Kara Jecha, Timken; Secretary Joan Panning, Ellinwood; Treasurer Chelsea Steffen, Larned; Laura Luft, La Crosse; Kim Guesnier, Great Bend; Kathleen Foster, Pawnee Rock; Janell Foote, Hudson; Cora Anderson, Otis; Jim White, Larned; and Baudilio Hernandez, Great Bend.

	Today’s board concentrates its efforts and dedicates a portion of available funding to three strategic areas – childcare, mental health and economic development philanthropy, along with competitive grant programs that support many other causes and needs.

	Original board members were: Mark Calcara, Linda Marmie, Craig Ellis, David Holste, D. Gene Dikeman, Dr. Jimmie Downing, George Drake, Nelva Grimes, Kim Hullman, Dr. Roger Marshall, Kevin Moeder, W.R. Robbins, Kathy Schugart and Krista Smith.

	“All of these leaders, along with volunteers, donors, non-profit organizations, and grant and scholarship recipients play a vital role in our progress,” Tustin summarized.

	Jerry Renk, Chamber Executive Committee member, nominated GBCF for the award because, in part, the work it has done “has truly made an indelible mark on the fabric of the communities. Founding donors should be recognized for their foresight and the staff for their efforts and time spent creating opportunities for so many.”

About the Legacy Award The Legacy Award, presented by the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, honors the life and legacy of individuals who have made an indelible mark on the fabric of our community. The first recipient of this award was Great Bend’s own Skip Yowell, founder of the company Jansport - an American brand of backpacks and collegiate apparel, now owned by VF Corporation, and one of the world's largest apparel companies. The award is given at the discretion of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Golden Belt Community Foundations receives Chamber's Legacy Award

Amelia Earhart speaks.&nbsp;She smiles, looks up, and begins to talk about her life experiences.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Wait – didn’t Amelia Earhart disappear in the South Pacific 80 years ago?&nbsp;

Yes, but she is alive again – at least virtually – in an incredible museum that will open in her hometown of Atchison in spring, 2023.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Joe Brentano is director of the new Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum.&nbsp;Makinzie Burghart is director of development.&nbsp;Burghart grew up in Atchison as did Amelia Earhart 120 years earlier.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Earhart and her younger sister, Muriel, spent many of their early years at their grandparent’s home in Atchison.&nbsp;In 1908, she saw her first airplane at the Iowa State Fair, but it didn’t excite her at the time.&nbsp;

Years later, she and a friend were at a flying exposition when a stunt pilot dived at them.&nbsp; “I believe that little red airplane spoke to me as it swished by,” Earhart later wrote.&nbsp;

After attending another air show, she was hooked on flying.&nbsp;She would go on to become the first president of the Ninety-Nines, a women's aviation organization; the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic; first woman to fly solo coast-to-coast; and the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to the mainland.&nbsp;

She received many honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross from Congress, before disappearing on an ill-fated attempt to fly around the globe.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Atchison celebrates the Amelia Earhart history through tours of her childhood home and an annual Amelia Earhart festival.&nbsp;But in 2016, a unique opportunity arose.&nbsp;There was an opportunity to purchase a Lockheed Electra 10-E – the same model as Amelia Earhart flew on her last flight, and the only one left in the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Citizens of Atchison, led by Karen and the late Ladd Seaberg, formed the Atchison Amelia Earhart Foundation and raised the funds to purchase the plane.&nbsp;It was affectionately named Muriel in honor of Amelia’s younger sister.&nbsp;The plane was carefully transported by trailer, 1,206 miles from California to Atchison.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The next step was to create a museum to display the plane.&nbsp;That led to the design and construction of the new Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum – in an actual hangar and terminal in a 1930s-style art deco building at the local airport. “This was a $17 million project,” Burghart said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Outside the museum stands a statue of Earhart, identical to the one that Kansas placed in statuary hall in the nation’s capitol.&nbsp;Inside the entrance, one is greeted by a hologram of Earhart.&nbsp;This electronic CGI image speaks her inspiring words from a century-plus ago, expressing the importance of transcending boundaries.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The centerpiece of the museum is Muriel, the Lockheed Electra 10-E.&nbsp;Muriel is surrounded by 14 incredible, high-tech, state-of-the-art interactive displays.&nbsp;Not only are these educational, they correlate with national and Kansas STEM curriculum content standards.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Exhibits include a digitized version of Earhart’s flight logbook, 3D holograms of aviation advancements through the years, and a display of other key female accomplishments.&nbsp; Guests can climb inside a full-sized replica of Muriel’s cockpit.&nbsp;At another station, guests can experience a virtual reality re-creation of Earhart’s 1932 transatlantic flight. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Another exhibit not only describes Earhart’s other pursuits as a nurse, mechanic, and fashion designer, it allows visitors to select one of these for which the computer will create a personalized on-screen avatar of the visitor in related clothing.&nbsp;Amazing!&nbsp;&nbsp;

What actually happened to Amelia Earhart?&nbsp;Step upstairs and the museum shows a map of where she disappeared, with an exhibit of seven alternative scenarios.&nbsp;Guests can study the arguments for and against each scenario and then vote.&nbsp;(I still suspect she’s living in an apartment with Elvis…)&nbsp;&nbsp;

This remarkable museum will open in mid-April 2023 in the rural community of Atchison, population 10,885 people.&nbsp;Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Now That’s Rural: Amelia Earhart Hanger Museum

Just taking a glance at Megan Hammeke’s title at the Great Bend Recreation Commission could be seen as an indication of why she was selected for the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce NextGen Leader Award.

	As marketing, aquatics and program director, Hammeke’s reach extends throughout The Rec and into the community. The award was presented Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Great Bend Events Center.

	Chris Umphres, The Rec director, like others in the community, was not surprised that Hammeke was honored in this way.

	“Megan is very involved in her hometown community, and is well-liked and respected,” Umphres said. “She does a great job and doesn’t have to be micro-managed. She knows what to do and just does it. Megan has a real passion for her work.

	“In all her activities here, Megan works well with her colleagues and is a team player.”

	At the same time, Umphres added, Hammeke has found the balance between work and home. “Family is big to Megan and she shares a lot of her time with them,” Umphres said.

	Hammeke has a bachelor’s degree in Health and Human Performance from Fort Hays State University. She also is certified as a Park &amp; Recreation Professional and is nationally certified as an Aquatics Facility Operator.

	“These certifications entail continuing education that allow Megan to stay current in our profession,” Umphres noted. “She also is involved with our state organization, sits on boards and is well-known at our conferences.”&nbsp;

	Marissa Woodmansee, director of Juvenile Services, has known Hammeke professionally and personally for about 15 years.

	“We have worked together, especially through Central Kansas Partnership and her involvement in Youth Crew,” Woodmansee said. “And our kids went to school together. Megan is such a deserving person – a hidden gem because of all the different roles she plays.”

	For example, she added, “Megan is helping take the Barton County Young Professionals to new levels. Also, when she attends conferences, she shares what she learned and has a knack for getting people fired up and following through on ideas.

	“We get so wrapped up in the busy-busy of life. Megan recognizes that it is good to slow down and get away sometimes.”

Mentor to others Sheridan Beaumont has known Hammeke for most of her life and ultimately worked for her at Wetlands Waterpark.

	“Not only was Megan a great boss, she is a great friend,” Beaumont said. “The many hours we spent together were full of teamwork and fun. She created so many opportunities for us to laugh while we learned.

	“Megan also taught me about leadership and instilled in me a passion for safety on the job. Her mentorship has meant the world to me. Her guidance has shaped me, and so many others. Megan’s hard work and dedication shine bright. I truly cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award.”

	Andrea Bauer, USD 428 director of public information, also noted Hammeke’s work at the waterpark. “She is often the first boss for up to 30 teenagers but goes beyond her official role. Megan becomes a mentor and positive influence for young people today and for years to come.

	“She also makes meaningful connections with the special-needs community and senior citizens by offering programming for these populations.”

	Bauer, who nominated Hammeke for the award, noted many other reasons she should be recognized but summed it up by saying “Megan works tirelessly to propel our community forward. She has a magnetic personality that draws people together in meaningful ways.

	“At The Rec and beyond, she advocates for our youth and invests time in their development. She is a servant leader who is always willing to roll up her sleeves and get the work done.”

Family Ryan Hammeke, Megan’s husband, realizes his wife is recognized for what she does on the job and as a volunteer “but she puts so much extra into her efforts that most people never see.”

	For example, she writes to former waterpark employees in the off season while they are back at school. She just wants to check in with them and show appreciation for their work.

	“Megan has created a culture at the waterpark that attracts teenagers to become part of a team,” Ryan said. “But she also teaches the responsibilities that come with a job and career. She volunteers for multiple committees with the sole purpose of improving our community.”

	While others comment about Hammeke’s love for her family, Ryan sees it first-hand. “She is the best mother and wife, and has a special relationship with each kid. Whether it is dance, wrestling, swimming, basketball or something else, she is right there cheering them on.

	Their children are Emma, 11, and Easton, 8.

	“Megan is my best friend and even during busy seasons at work, she makes time for us,” Ryan commented. “She loves camping at the lake with family, including her parents, David and Stacey Brenner, and extended family. And we get together with close friends, while letting all the kids be kids.”

	Ryan also noted that since his wife plays so many roles in her job, some don’t see the “other Megan.”

	“She is a blast to be around,” he explained. “Megan strikes an incredible balance of being a fun-loving girl, singing at the top of her lungs and dancing, while also being a driven professional woman. The lucky ones get to see both sides.”

NextGen Leader of the Year Award Criteria The NextGen Leader of the Year award is presented annually to an individual creating a meaningful impact as a rising leader in Barton County, Kansas. Nominees are leaders in their work environment, as well as in the community. This award is presented by the Barton County Young Professionals, a program of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce.

Great Bend Chamber names Hammeke as NextGen Leader of the Year

When Scott Donovan’s name was mentioned as a possible nominee for the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award, Barry Bowers said it was “almost embarrassing” that Donovan hadn’t yet received this recognition in the past.

	Bowers, a close friend of the award winner, noted that Donovan’s energy and community involvement more than qualify him for this honor.

	“And, on top of that, he is just an all-around good guy,” Bowers said. “He would do anything for you; it is just the kind of person he is. You don’t hear negative comments about him.”

	The award was bestowed Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Chamber’s annual banquet.

	Donovan specializes in sales at Eagle Radio and his background is chock-full of service on local boards and committees. His real name is Darrel Bieker, but because he is Scott Donovan while on the air, that is how most people know him.

	Bowers and Donovan met in 1982 through their participation in the Boy Scouts of America. Donovan had been elected Region Chief and the two rode together to a scouting conference in Missouri.

	“He was about 18 at the time and I was 22,” Bowers recalled. “We got to know one another a little bit on that trip, which led to the 40-year friendship we have today.”

	Those who know Donovan may not even realize the extent of his commitment to his family and volunteerism.

	“He is hyper-involved,” Bowers commented. “Scott has turned commitment into an art form. But he is not just a name on lists of board members and volunteers. If he agrees to do something, he will work at it. He is not a resume-builder. Scott thrives on the energy and the people around him.

	“His wife, Mary Bieker, is the perfect partner,” Bowers continued. “Compared to Scott, she is the quiet one. But when she talks, you listen; she is very insightful. I have been impressed with how they balance their lives.”

	Mary and Scott have been married for 27 years and have two adult children. Michala Bieker, 25, teaches first grade in Salina; Emma Bieker, 21, is a graduate student in social work in Kansas City.

	“The balancing act between home, work and volunteering is not easy,” Mary acknowledged. “It is a continual work in progress. My job as a speech/language pathologist is demanding during the school year but it allows for family time during school breaks.”

	Mary also noted that she and Scott have had opportunities to move elsewhere but chose to raise their children here.

	“He has chosen to ‘bloom where you are planted,’” she explained. “He has been planted here and made it his life choice to help others be successful here too.

	“He has a servant’s heart,” she continued. “It is not about what you can do for him but what he can do for you. I think people don’t have a clear idea of how much time he freely donates to so many events with no expectation of pay. He is skilled at building relationships, which has helped him positively impact local people and businesses through the many hats he wears.”

	Mary summarized the reason for her family’s personal strength. “Our lives are centered around our faith in God. We have been very blessed by Him and that allows service to others.”

Nominators Leonard Kaiser and Jon Prescott nominated Donovan for the Chamber award. Kaiser has known him since the late 1980s and served with him on boards and councils at Prince of Peace Parish, CASA, Knights of Columbus and others.

	“Without a doubt, Scott is driven by relationships and service to his family, community, friends and church,” Kaiser said. “He uses God’s gift of his voice and donates his energy and time to so many events. Service is truly his middle name.”

	Prescott noted “there is so much more to this man than what you hear on the radio. Over the last 40-plus years, he has given his time, dedication and resources to projects, charities, organizations, and most importantly, people.”

 </figure>When Scott Donovan’s name was mentioned as a possible nominee for the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award, Barry Bowers said it was “almost embarrassing” that Donovan hadn’t yet received this recognition in the past.	Bowers, a close friend of the award winner, noted that Donovan’s energy and community involvement more than qualify him for this honor.	“And, on top of that, he is just an all-around good guy,” Bowers said. “He would do anything for you; it is just the kind of person he is. You don’t hear negative comments about him.”	The award was bestowed Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Chamber’s annual banquet.	Donovan specializes in sales at Eagle Radio and his background is chock-full of service on local boards and committees. His real name is Darrel Bieker, but because he is Scott Donovan while on the air, that is how most people know him.	Bowers and Donovan met in 1982 through their participation in the Boy Scouts of America. Donovan had been elected Region Chief and the two rode together to a scouting conference in Missouri.	“He was about 18 at the time and I was 22,” Bowers recalled. “We got to know one another a little bit on that trip, which led to the 40-year friendship we have today.”	Those who know Donovan may not even realize the extent of his commitment to his family and volunteerism.	“He is hyper-involved,” Bowers commented. “Scott has turned commitment into an art form. But he is not just a name on lists of board members and volunteers. If he agrees to do something, he will work at it. He is not a resume-builder. Scott thrives on the energy and the people around him.	“His wife, Mary Bieker, is the perfect partner,” Bowers continued. “Compared to Scott, she is the quiet one. But when she talks, you listen; she is very insightful. I have been impressed with how they balance their lives.”	Mary and Scott have been married for 27 years and have two adult children. Michala Bieker, 25, teaches first grade in Salina; Emma Bieker, 21, is a graduate student in social work in Kansas City.	“The balancing act between home, work and volunteering is not easy,” Mary acknowledged. “It is a continual work in progress. My job as a speech/language pathologist is demanding during the school year but it allows for family time during school breaks.”	Mary also noted that she and Scott have had opportunities to move elsewhere but chose to raise their children here.	“He has chosen to ‘bloom where you are planted,’” she explained. “He has been planted here and made it his life choice to help others be successful here too.	“He has a servant’s heart,” she continued. “It is not about what you can do for him but what he can do for you. I think people don’t have a clear idea of how much time he freely donates to so many events with no expectation of pay. He is skilled at building relationships, which has helped him positively impact local people and businesses through the many hats he wears.”	Mary summarized the reason for her family’s personal strength. “Our lives are centered around our faith in God. We have been very blessed by Him and that allows service to others.”Nominators Leonard Kaiser and Jon Prescott nominated Donovan for the Chamber award. Kaiser has known him since the late 1980s and served with him on boards and councils at Prince of Peace Parish, CASA, Knights of Columbus and others.	“Without a doubt, Scott is driven by relationships and service to his family, community, friends and church,” Kaiser said. “He uses God’s gift of his voice and donates his energy and time to so many events. Service is truly his middle name.”	Prescott noted “there is so much more to this man than what you hear on the radio. Over the last 40-plus years, he has given his time, dedication and resources to projects, charities, organizations, and most importantly, people.”	Prescott collaborated with Donovan’s wife on a list that outlines his volunteer work. Scott Donovan named Great Bend's 2022 Citizen of the Year

Dry lake Brewing has only been open for about two years now, and it’s already a challenge to think of Great Bend without it. It has cemented itself as the prime place for locals to get together for a pint and/or cocktail or grab a bite to eat from one of the many amazing food trucks that frequent the back parking lot. 

Dry Lake was named the 2022 Business of the Year at the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet on Saturday, Feb. 25.

When someone strolls through the DLB door, they can be assured they will be well taken care of by the staff because at this brewery they not only serve up drinks, but they also aim to serve up a memorable experience every time. This experience is something that founders Ryan Fairchild and Kevin Burkey keep at the forefront of their minds when they plan or produce anything at DLB.

“First off, we just want to say ‘thank you,’” Fairchild said. “From both Kevin and I, from our families, from our staff. Everybody's been really supportive. People were willing to give us a chance and that’s huge.”

Burkey agreed that every person who stepped through their doors helped him know they made the right decision to open a brewery in GBK.

“Opening was overwhelming,” he said. “The response was fantastic. We had a couple of months where we were worried we were going to run out of beer. We’ve enjoyed being the first stop on the craft beer journey for some people. Great Bend has always been more of a ‘Bud Light’ community, and I think we've had a lot of people that start out with our Cheyenne Bottoms Pilsner that’s similar to what they were used to and have slowly migrated to find a new favorite. It’s been really cool to watch that journey.”

The founders left nothing to chance and did their homework to ensure that their dream lived up to the hype they created in their minds, and it all started with meticulous research, which just happened to include travelling to a lot of breweries and, of course, sampling beers.

“We talked to a lot of other breweries and the support from all the other breweries meant so much to us,” Fairchild said. “Talking to other people in the industry, and just kind of having been around different bars and breweries ourselves and seeing what we liked and what we didn't like, but also having detailed

conversations with other brewers and owners and seeing what worked and what didn't work and just doing the research helped us start out on a positive note.”

Burkey was quick to add that a key element to their success has been their staff.

“I've been to bad breweries, and it comes down to two things either as bad beer or bad people,” he said. “So, to be a good brewery, you need both good beer and you need good people serving it and also good people making it, and good people promoting it. I think we make good beer. I think we've hired the right people and we’ve got a good crowd. People that absolutely care about us. They want to see us succeed.”

Fairchild said one major priority is to make sure their staff is friendly and educated about the beer so they can help people who may have never tried craft beer figure out what they may like. With up to 12 beers on tap, even the most seasoned craftie-head can have a tough time deciding.

“Whether this is your first time here or your 100th time here, we want you to feel welcome and comfortable,” he said. “We stress engagement to our staff, and we want you to feel at home.”

Over the past two years, Dry Lake has grown its fanbase. It’s had to add capacity for more beer and introduced 16-ounce cans to go, so the proof is in the beer. It has hosted concerts, comedy nights, trivia nights, the Bike Brew Q pumpkin smash charity event, and sporting-event watch parties that have all created lasting memories for their customers and themselves. As the second anniversary celebration on May 6 approaches, the pair knows that while community is key to their success, their families and specifically their wives, Marisa Fairchild and Kelci Burkey, have been the lynchpins that have held the dream together.

“My wife has been an absolute saint,” Fairchild said. “So, I’m glad she’s been able to see it grow and see the positives of this and she is absolutely behind this 100%.”

“Kelci had to start out on faith just on an idea,” Burkey said. “Before there was ever any kind of plan, she had to kind of just get on board. She's had to make a lot of sacrifices. This place wouldn't exist without Kelci and Marisa for sure. Then, our extended families also pitched in, like having my in-laws in here helping paint and do demolition and I know my kids have had to sacrifice me not being around as much. So, it's been an absolute family effort.”

Jay Harris will begin serving as the Cottonwood District Extension Director, effective March 6. Cottonwood District has offices in Great Bend and Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; Harris’s primary office is in Hays.&nbsp;

He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agronomy from Kansas State University. &nbsp;Harris has most recently been employed as a business manager for Western Prairie Equine Service and as an agricultural education teacher for Thomas More Prep-Marian Jr./Sr. High School in Hays, KS.&nbsp;

Extension Directors provide administrative leadership for budget and fiscal operations; personnel management of local staff; overall program development, delivery, and evaluation; and assurance of accessibility to local programming by all individuals.&nbsp; Harris will also be working directly with the community vitality programs in Cottonwood District.&nbsp;

Local extension faculty are jointly employed in a partnership between K-State Research and Extension, headquartered on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan, and the local Extension board. &nbsp;

The role of K-State Research and Extension is to encourage the adoption of research-based information to improve the quality of life for Kansans. League Day at the Capitol on Feb. 14 attracted 70 League of Women Voters of Kansas (LWVK) members to Topeka. Speakers had 15- 20 minutes each to share their concerns about important issues that Kansans face today. After lunch attendees were able to contact their legislators. 

Great Bend League members Jan Stice and Janice Walker greeted House Representative Tory Blew from District 112. A note on her desk had been left listing our concerns regarding water, expansion of Medicaid, and redistricting. Later, we sat down and visited with Senator Alicia Straub, District 33. Concern about our state water issues was our priority. 

Speakers during the morning session included the following:

Micah Kubic, Ph.D., Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) spoke to the need for us to maintain our democracy as everyone needs a seat at the table. It is important for us to increase access to voting in our counties. Dr. Kubic encouraged us to read the poem Democracy by Langston Hughes: “Democracy will not come today, this year nor ever through compromise and fear….” Democracy by Langston Hughes - Famous poems, famous poets. - All Poetry

Tabitha Lehan, Certified Election Administrator, discussed the fact that voting in Kansas is good as citizens can vote by mail and are able to get on the permanent advanced voting list. Ballots are mailed early and have a specific code for each voter. The counties own the secure drop boxes that are placed in well-lit areas with video surveillance. The thin opening allows only one ballot at a time. Votes are placed in secure bags by two election staff and taken directly to the election offices. Ballot boxes should not be reduced. There is no ‘ballot harvesting.’

Paul Johnson, Legislative Consultant for LWVK, expressed great concern about the water issues in Kansas. He feels it is at a breaking point. Our streams and lakes are impaired, and Cheyenne Bottoms went dry in 2022. Now that Kansas has set aside $1 Billion in the ‘budget stabilization fund (rainy day fund)’ and plans to add more in 2024 - $500 million to $1 Billion more – a portion of that – say $100 million – should establish a ‘water rights recovery fund’ to extend the life of the Ogallala aquifer and save key watersheds such as ‘rattlesnake creek’ just above Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. April Holman, Executive Director of Alliance for a Healthy Kansas. Ms. Holman is part of a coalition that wants to expand KanCare (Medicaid). 70% of Kansans join her in this agreement. This expansion was part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA/Obamacare) which took effect in 2014. Kansas is one of the 11 states that have not expanded this health care, so our federal tax dollars are going to the other states that have expanded their Medicaid programs. This year Senate Bill 225 has been introduced to expand KanCare. If approved Ms. Holman states that Kansas would get a sign-on bonus of $300-400 million over a 2-year period. Sherri Grogan, People Powered Fair Maps/Redistricting committee League member. This committee updated the LWVK position statement on legislative and congressional redistricting. In 2021 the committee conducted training sessions on the redistricting process, providing testimony to the Legislature and the Kansas Supreme Court. The updated position statement will be voted upon during the LWVK Convention on April 22, 2023, in Wichita. The LWVK believes that responsibility for legislative and congressional redistricting should be vested in an entity that is independent of the legislature. As such, the independent entity should be non-partisan, composed of individuals who reflect the diversity of the residents of the state, and guided by the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Richard Pund, League Committee Chair of the Election Administration Position Statement Update. Because this topic is so broad, the committee will take the rest of the year to study this position. There are many different election methods used in the United States, such as Ranked Choice, Approval, and Cumulative voting. Education on these methods will be needed. Plurality voting is mostly used in our state where a candidate who polls more (gets more votes) than any other counterpart is elected. A co-chair will focus on topics related to barriers to voting and voter registration.

The LWVK believes that responsibility for legislative and congressional redistricting should be vested in an entity that is independent of the legislature. Great Bend members participate in League Day at the Capitol

Barton Community College is reducing costs on online courses this spring for Kansas high school students from $155 per credit hour to $75. That’s a savings of over 50 percent per credit hour. Eligible students include Kansas high school sophomores and older.

Director of Early College Opportunities Karly Little said the savings will start with session four courses, which begin March 20 and will continue for future online sessions. High school students may be able to take the courses as dual credit, but she said students should check with their high school counselor to see whether the class would count on their high school transcript and how it could impact their class schedules.

“I’m so excited to see students take advantage of this $75 per credit hour opportunity,” she said.&nbsp;“We hope it will help students make great progress on their college or career plans beginning with the March 20 session or any other sessions that follow.&nbsp; Each session is a new opportunity!”

Little said students will receive a reduction in tuition costs through a Barton scholarship. In addition to the scholarship on the credit-hour rate, some classes utilize low-cost (under $50) or no-cost textbooks, helping students in these classes save even more money.&nbsp; A state-approved list of career technical education (CTE) courses is still being offered at no tuition charged for high school students through a state program called Excel in CTE.

“Students can take individual classes or work toward earning an associate degree or certificate,” she said. “They can even mix and match with tuition-free Excel in CTE, general education, and other technical courses. Mixing and matching the rates helps reduce a student's overall cost.”

There is a wide array of courses available. Students can access online courses 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All sessions are open for enrollment from now until the day before the class starts.

Drew Richetts, an assistant professor and Extension Wildlife specialist with K-State Research &amp; Extension will give a ninety-minute program on white-tailed deer biology, space use, cover requirements, nutritional requirements, managing white-tailed deer habitat, supplemental feeding and managing white-tailed deer populations.
