Spring was on everyone's mind as they visited the 38 vendors at Eagle Radio's fifth Home &amp; Garden Show Presented by Comfort Pro at the Great Bend Events Center Saturday. The event also featured three food trucks in the parking lot, and Eagle Radio’s Promotions Director Shannon Towns said the event also featured the next big giveaway.

"Eagle Radio got to showcase our new car giveaway, the Nitro Summer with Doan's Outdoor Store, Northview Nursery &amp; Landscape, Ehler Chevrolet, and Farmer's Bank &amp; Trust," she said. "It's Nitro Yellow. You can't miss it - stick out like the sun - and it starts on April 22. You'll be able to sign up at participating sponsors. We'll have instant finalist days. When it's all said and done, somebody is going to be driving away in that Nitro Yellow Trailblazer."

Eagle Radio and Comfort Pro teamed up for a $1,000 giveaway Saturday. Deanna Eldridge was the lucky winner out of 130 entries. She can now choose where to spend the money between the 38 vendors at Saturday's event.

"That's awesome," she said. "I don't yet. Maybe a new grill, I don't know."

The Home &amp; Garden show featured various local businesses in home improvement, technology, and communications, among others. T-Rays BBQ, Lana's Catering and Goodies, and Flatlanders Stonefired Flatbreads fed the hungry crowd outside.

Eagle Radio debuts new car giveaway at Home & Garden Show

Kelly’s Garden Sense will host a ribbon cutting on Tuesday, March 28 at 10 a.m. for their new 2,500 square ft. Greenhouse, located at 134 NE 10th&nbsp;Ave. in Great Bend. They will also begin offering seasonal retail hours, April 1 to May 20, for customers to shop the Greenhouses and the signature&nbsp;POP of Color&nbsp;Kelly Meier-Moeder, owner, is known for.

“My designs layer a mix of color, texture, and unique plants that mature, color all season, and thrive here. We had a hard time sourcing or couldn’t find all the varieties we wanted before … now we can grow them right here in Great Bend!” Moeder said. “We built our first greenhouse in 2021 and outgrew it almost immediately. The new Greenhouse is double the size and allows us to grow bigger, fuller plants year-round and they’re built for the Kansas heat and elements.”

Moeder got her start in landscaping, typically a male-dominated field, with three pots of annual plants, and an eye for design. What started as a seed of inspiration has grown and bloomed into a team of seven at Kelly’s Garden Sense. Moeder is a certified landscape designer and has a passion for creating pottery and landscapes that are anything but ordinary. Her goal is to elevate the curb appeal of Great Bend and the surrounding area one landscape, business or display at a time.

“This project was no small feat,” said Moeder. “We had to rely on Paul’s leadership and years of experience with building and working with contractors, [Moeder’s husband and business partner] and our many friends and experts in the community to bring this greenhouse to life. It would not have been possible without help from Schenkel Construction Company,&nbsp;Gleason Landscaping,&nbsp;Comfort Pro, Rainmaker, Tory McFarren, Stone Stand, and Scott Christian.”

Once the season is in full swing, Moeder expects to have grown 25,000+ plants in their greenhouses to provide year-round pottery and landscape design. Kelly’s team will continue to bring the Greenhouse to you and offer full-service landscaping and seasonal pottery but with the added opportunity to shop local, ideal for those who love to D.I.Y. (Do it yourself).

New greenhouse to open in Great Bend

On Friday, March 24 at approximately 9:45 a.m., officers from the Great Bend Police Department responded to 2501 Cheyenne Dr. in Great Bend in reference to the execution of a search warrant stemming from an ongoing investigation involving distribution of methamphetamine. 

Upon arrival, police apprehended four individuals inside the house identified as Michael Hurd, age 45; Charles Rowe Sr., age 57; Christopher Buckley, age 41 and Mary Lovesee, age 47.&nbsp;

During a search of the residence, detectives located methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and evidence of distribution. Hurd was arrested on a Barton County felony warrant for probation violation. Hurd was also booked into the Barton County Jail on charges of distribution of methamphetamine within 1000' of a school, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and no drug tax stamp. Hurd was booked in lieu of $300,000 cash surety bonds.

Rowe Sr. was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and no drug tax stamp. Rowe Sr. was booked in lieu of $10,000 cash surety bond.

Buckley was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and no drug tax stamp. Buckley was booked in lieu of $10,000 cash surety bond.

Lovesee was placed under arrest for possession of marijuana, and no drug tax stamp. Lovesee was booked in lieu of $2,500 cash surety bond.

USD 428 invites parents and guardians to attend the second annual Preschool and Kindergarten Pre-Enrollment Information Fair at the Great Bend Events Center on Wednesday, April 5 from 1 p.m. – 7 p.m.

“Learning begins long before a child enters kindergarten,” said Tricia Reiser, assistant superintendent for USD 428. “Our enrollment fair on April 5 is an opportunity for parents and families to learn more about USD 428 Preschool and Kindergarten programs and connect with community resources that serve young learners.”

At the come-and-go event, USD 428 teachers and support staff will be available to talk with parents about academic programs, social-emotional support, attendance requirements, and more. Preschool programs in Great Bend include opportunities for both 3 and 4-year-olds. Kindergarten is available for students who turn 5-years-old on or before August 31, 2023.

“Beyond being a convenience for families, we hope the ‘one-stop-shop’ style event showcases the unity of our USD 428 elementary schools and preschool programs in our curriculums, academic standards, and student support,” said Reiser. “There is a high level of coordination and collaboration in our district that provides benefits to students, families, and teachers.”

Other exhibitors at the event include community preschools, Great Bend Public Library, Kansas Wetlands Education Center, Parents as Teachers, Great Bend Rec, and other organizations that support the development of young learners and their families.

Barton County Sheriff's Booking Activity (3/24 - 3/26)

Barton County’s Youth Crew spent the first year getting its feet wet and now is diving into the deep end.

“We are enhancing our recruitment efforts in Barton County schools to attract more students in grades 6 through 12,” said Tyler Morton, prevention advocate. “Also, we are increasing our contacts with churches and civic organizations.”

Youth Crew is a student-led program that seeks to create positive change throughout the community.

“It is designed to give young people a platform to share their ideas,” Morton explained. “Our focus is on the prevention of drug-and-alcohol use and the creation of healthy habits through education about the dangers of substance misuse.

“In addition, Youth Crew strives to recruit, retain and train members for leadership positions. The group will go as far as the kids want to take it. They have the power and the voice.”

Morton noted that “one voice can change a community but there is greater strength in numbers.”

The number now stands at approximately 50 Youth Crew members; about 30 regularly attend the meetings.

The group gathers from 4 to 5 p.m. on the first three Sundays of the month. Locations are Juvenile Services, 1800 12th, Great Bend; Hoisington Activity Center; and Wolf Hotel in Ellinwood. The spaces are donated.

“Some young people want to be involved in something but are just not sure what that something is,” Morton commented. “Youth Crew can be an avenue to figuring that out.”

Some events are just for fun, while others involve volunteering for charitable community projects. There also are opportunities to attend state and national conferences.

Events have included kickball, a scavenger hunt, soccer day at Barton Community College, Christmas Trail of Lights, Trash Pickup Day and Boxes of Love.

“Any church or civic organization that has a community project is encouraged to contact us,” Morton said. “We love to collaborate with other groups for the betterment of Barton County.”

Young people representing all walks of life are involved in Youth Crew.

“They are sometimes seeking new peer groups and, from what we have seen, parents are all for it,” Morton said. “We hope young people reach out and learn more about us.

“Once they become involved,” he continued, “students learn they can empower their own generation to be decision makers, while promoting change through programs, campaigns and community education.”

Youth Crew is a task force under the umbrella of the Central Kansas Partnership. It was made possible by a Center for Disease Control and Prevention Drug Free Communities grant.

This grant provides $125,000 a year for up to 10 years. It finances the project coordinator position and expenses for the various events.

Kansas is officially a Home Rule state. It has been since 1961, when an amendment to the Kansas state constitution officially declared that Kansas cities are “empowered to determine their local affairs…except when” such actions are “limited or prohibited” by an act of the state legislature. That’s an important acknowledgement of local democracy—or at least potentially so.

In my observation over the years, though, our elected representatives in Topeka tend to pay far more attention to the “except when” clause, thus leading the principle of Home Rule to be observed more often in the breach than in fact.

That’s not unusual, unfortunately. If you research which states allow Home Rule, as opposed to those which adopt “Dillon’s Rule”—a 19th-century judicial ruling which stipulated that the residents of cities have no inherent democratic right to rule themselves, and possess the power of local government only so far as states grant it to them—you’ll find that most of those states significantly limit the authority of their cities.&nbsp;

In Kansas, the language of our Home Rule amendment presents a fairly easy limitation for the state legislature to make use of: simply impose some kind of broad, state-wide prohibition, even if the issue is an entirely local one, and suddenly cities may be forbidden from governing themselves in that area whatsoever. A bill being debated in Topeka is just another example of this practice.

The bill, House Resolution 2447, aims to take away from all Kansas cities the ability to ban or restrict within their borders the sale of any product that is otherwise legal elsewhere in the state. Pushed by the Kansas Chamber of Commerce, its ostensible purpose is to prevent “disuniform business conditions across the state,” which is another way of saying that the people who live in some cities might be persuaded to regulate businesses in response to local problems in a way different from how other cities might. In reality, it’s not difficult to see this bill as reflecting an ideological disposition against giving power to those local residents—specifically, those in urban areas--who might prioritize certain social concerns over the interests of business owners.

The specific provenance of the bill is a pet store in Wichita, which sells dogs from breeders in a manner than many concerned about the size of the city’s population of abandoned and unhealthy pets wish to prevent. (Wichita’s citizen-run Animal Control Advisory Board has recommended action, but Wichita’s city council has as yet taken none, meaning this bill exists in response to a complete hypothetical.) In reality, a bill this broad could potentially prevent any Kansas city from imposing almost any regulation upon businesses within their borders. It also presents a sneaky return to the attempt to stop environmentally concerned Kansans who are pushing their cities to consider limitations on plastic bag use in grocery stores, an invasive bill which the Kansas Senate wisely killed last month.

In the face of criticism, promoters of HR 2447 have added qualifications, guaranteeing that the bill wouldn’t prevent Kansas cities from using their zoning power to regulate liquor stores, strip clubs, and the like. But in my view, that’s just putting Home Rule lipstick on a statist pig. John Doll, a state senator from Garden City, when voting down the aforementioned ban on local plastic bag bans, correctly expressed frustration at the legislature’s frequent “lack of respect” for “the ability of county and city governments” to determine what is best “for their particular communities.” Let’s hope a majority of Kansas legislators agree with Doll, and vote down this overreaching bill as well.

🎙County Edition: Appraiser Wendy Prosser

The
drought monitor report as of Tuesday, March 21 indicates exceptional drought continuing
to envelope almost all of Barton, Pawnee, and now into Stafford Counties.&nbsp; The six to ten-day outlook (to March 28 to April
1) indicates near normal temperatures and precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (March 30
to April 5) indicates a 33 to 40% chance of leaning to below normal
temperatures and near normal precipitation.&nbsp;
As a point of reference, April is when our average annual monthly
precipitation ticks upward to around three inches.&nbsp; However, while that will keep wheat hanging
on and allow some moisture for corn planting, normal will do little to recharge
the soil moisture profile.

Last week, we discussed why weeds
are so good at what they do.&nbsp; This week,
let’s briefly discuss Weed Control 101 for crop production.&nbsp; This will just brush the surface of what goes
into a successful weed control program.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The
first step is to know what weed problems exist.&nbsp;
What grasses and broadleaves are present?&nbsp; Are they annual, biennial, and/or
perennials?&nbsp; Does the field have
herbicide resistant?&nbsp; What is the cropping
history of the field?

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Assuming
you have an idea of what weed problems are present, the next step is to develop
an (IPM) Integrated Pest Management Program.&nbsp;
People think conventional agriculture simply controls pests chemically
but the reality is different.&nbsp; IPM
involves a variety of methods, including herbicides.&nbsp; IPM plans should be cost effective, suppress
weed pressure to an acceptable level, and protect the environment.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Depending
on the climate, soil type, and other factors, develop as diverse a crop
rotation as possible involving both grass and broadleaf crops.&nbsp; The better the precipitation and/or irrigation,
the more diverse the crop rotation possible.&nbsp;
The concept here is that it’s easier to control broadleaf weeds in grass
crops and vice-versa.&nbsp; Part of the
rotation may have to include an extended period of fallow, if practical, when
problem weeds are present for aggressive cultural and chemical control.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; At
planting, start with weed free field.&nbsp;&nbsp;
This may be achieved chemically, with tillage, or a combination of
both.&nbsp; Some producers achieve this with a
cover crop prior to planting that is allowed to grow, cover the soil, killed,
and left in place.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The
best weed control is an actively growing crop that covers the soil
rapidly.&nbsp; So deciding on the proper row
spacing and plant population while providing the best physical and chemical
environment for the crop is key.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While
not inexpensive, a preemergence weed control program that allows the crop to
get ahead of weeds, one that controls grasses and small seeded broadleaves will
allow the crop six weeks or so to become established.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally
control weeds when they are small and in the seedling stage.&nbsp; For row crops and when part of the program,
cultivate.&nbsp; Often, herbicides are
involved.&nbsp; The key for herbicides is to
not use the same mode of action but vary them to prevent herbicide resistance
from becoming a problem.&nbsp; Often use
several modes of action at one time.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; There
is much, much more but hopefully this gives everyone an idea of what is
involved.

drought monitor report as of Tuesday, March 21 indicates exceptional drought continuing
to envelope almost all of Barton, Pawnee, and now into Stafford Counties.&nbsp; The six to ten-day outlook (to March 28 to April
1) indicates near normal temperatures and precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (March 30
to April 5) indicates a 33 to 40% chance of leaning to below normal
temperatures and near normal precipitation.&nbsp;
As a point of reference, April is when our average annual monthly
precipitation ticks upward to around three inches.&nbsp; However, while that will keep wheat hanging
on and allow some moisture for corn planting, normal will do little to recharge
the soil moisture profile.Last week, we discussed why weeds
are so good at what they do.&nbsp; This week,
let’s briefly discuss Weed Control 101 for crop production.&nbsp; This will just brush the surface of what goes
into a successful weed control program.·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The
first step is to know what weed problems exist.&nbsp;
What grasses and broadleaves are present?&nbsp; Are they annual, biennial, and/or
perennials?&nbsp; Does the field have
herbicide resistant?&nbsp; What is the cropping
history of the field?·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Assuming
you have an idea of what weed problems are present, the next step is to develop
an (IPM) Integrated Pest Management Program.&nbsp;
People think conventional agriculture simply controls pests chemically
but the reality is different.&nbsp; IPM
involves a variety of methods, including herbicides.&nbsp; IPM plans should be cost effective, suppress
weed pressure to an acceptable level, and protect the environment.·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Depending
on the climate, soil type, and other factors, develop as diverse a crop
rotation as possible involving both grass and broadleaf crops.&nbsp; The better the precipitation and/or irrigation,
the more diverse the crop rotation possible.&nbsp;
The concept here is that it’s easier to control broadleaf weeds in grass
crops and vice-versa.&nbsp; Part of the
rotation may have to include an extended period of fallow, if practical, when
problem weeds are present for aggressive cultural and chemical control.·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; At
planting, start with weed free field.&nbsp;&nbsp;
This may be achieved chemically, with tillage, or a combination of
both.&nbsp; Some producers achieve this with a
cover crop prior to planting that is allowed to grow, cover the soil, killed,
and left in place.·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The
best weed control is an actively growing crop that covers the soil
rapidly.&nbsp; So deciding on the proper row
spacing and plant population while providing the best physical and chemical
environment for the crop is key.·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While
not inexpensive, a preemergence weed control program that allows the crop to
get ahead of weeds, one that controls grasses and small seeded broadleaves will
allow the crop six weeks or so to become established.·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally
control weeds when they are small and in the seedling stage.&nbsp; For row crops and when part of the program,
cultivate.&nbsp; Often, herbicides are
involved.&nbsp; The key for herbicides is to
not use the same mode of action but vary them to prevent herbicide resistance
from becoming a problem.&nbsp; Often use
several modes of action at one time.·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; There
is much, much more but hopefully this gives everyone an idea of what is
involved.

“These grants will help handle the costs of proper disposal of many materials scrap tires and assist many important local efforts to promote litter and waste reduction. KDHE applauds the creativity and innovation that our communities have in reusing materials that help support the mission of protecting the health and environment of all Kansans” said&nbsp;Janet Stanek, Secretary, Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The grants are funded by revenue collected through the tire excise tax, a $0.25/vehicle tire fee.

The grants totaled $522,312.25, an almost 20 percent (19.8%) increase from 2022 were awarded to 45 organizations to fund projects that include the use of recycled tire products, including playground surfacing and picnic tables.

Area counties receive waste tire product grants

The annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Great Bend is set for 9:30 a.m. sharp, Saturday, April 8, 2023. The hunt will be at the Kiwanis Walking Track on the north side of Veterans Memorial Park, just off McKinley Street, Great Bend. 

The event is open to all area children from preschool through sixth grade. There will be lots of Easter eggs and candy for all. The Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt is free for all to attend. Age groups are separated into sections, and candy will be scattered across Veterans Park for them to find. The Easter Bunny will be present for photos. At 9:30 a.m., the police siren will sound and the Easter Egg hunt will begin.

The Barton Music Department will treat the community to the breathtaking piano playing of Chiara D’Odorico at 7:30 p.m. April 21 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Admission is free.

She will be presenting a program of Paraguayan classical music and will be joined by Argentinian pianist David Lonardi for some four-hand numbers. D’Odorico is from Paraguay and has played all over the world with numerous groups including the world-famous Orquesta Sinfonica de la Ciudad de Asuncion. She has performed in Brazil, Colombia, U.S., Italy, France, The Vatican, Spain, Austria, Russia, South Africa, Lebanon, and India. Some of the most distinguished venues include The Kennedy Center, Palácio Foz, Salón Dorado del Teatro Colón, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, National Gallery of Canada, Palazzo Capizucchi, and Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya.&nbsp;

D'Odorico has two albums that have been released: “Purahéi che retãgua” (nominated for the 2020 Gardel Awards for Best Classical Music Album) and “Ofrenda a mi tierra” with the aim of disseminating Paraguayan academic music. She will have CDs for purchase after the concert.

These funds are available for specific programs or projects lead by any 501c3 non-profit in Barton or Pawnee Counties for up to $1,000. Priority funding will be given to projects that present innovative approaches to meeting the health and human services needs of our community. Other factors for funding consideration will include measurable outcomes, programs that meet current needs in the community, and the organization’s ability to secure funds to continue the project, if applicable.

Total funds for this first year is $5,000, which will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis starting April 1. Grants will be awarded for programs or projects in the fields of health, education, and financial stability. These grants will be acted on a rolling deadline basis throughout the year, with applicants being notified within 4-6 weeks of the application submission.

Funding will not be considered for annual fund drives, building funds, operating deficits or after-the-fact support, direct or grassroots lobbying, religious purposes, hospitals, medical research, academic research, or event sponsorships.

The three Rs. When I was a kid, that referred to Readin,’ `Ritin,’ and `Rithmetic.&nbsp;

Today we’ll learn about a different set of Rs that are being applied to the world of horses: Rescue, Rehabilitate, and Re-home. Those are the goals of a remarkable enterprise that is helping to save and benefit horses in rural Kansas.&nbsp;

Karen Everhart is executive director of the non-profit organization Rainbow Meadows Equine Rescue &amp; Retirement, which she co-founded with her husband Dave. Karen and Dave are from the Wichita area originally. Everhart said she was the proverbial “horse-crazy girl” who spent summers with horses on her family’s farm in southeast Kansas.&nbsp;

She met and married Dave who spent 38 years in military service. Everhart became a medical administrator but never forgot her love of horses.&nbsp;

In 1981, she purchased the first horse of her own: A golden Palomino mare named Rainbow. Over time, she added to her horse herd. In 2005, she retired from her health administrator position and purchased a ranch in Chautauqua County.&nbsp;

“People would contact me about some horse that was abandoned or in a kill pen and say, `Could you help this horse?’ ” Everhart said. Within four months, her horse herd doubled from 10 to 20. It was clear there was a need.&nbsp;

In September 2005, Rainbow Meadows Equine Rescue &amp; Retirement was incorporated as a 501(c)3 organization. It can now receive tax-deductible donations. The organization is named Rainbow Meadows in honor of Everhart’s first beloved horse.&nbsp;

“Since that time, we’ve worked harder than we ever did in our professional lives,” Everhart said with a smile.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We appreciate our wonderful, caring volunteers.”&nbsp;

The goal is to rescue horses, mules and donkeys that are at risk. These equine are rehabilitated and, where appropriate, adopted out to caring homes.&nbsp;

There are two types of intake to the program. One is horses from horse-owners who find themselves unable to care for their equines due to circumstances such as illness, changed family situations, or otherwise.&nbsp;

“We can be a first responder for the horses,” Everhart said. The second type of intake, much less common, is receiving horses through a sheriff or police department when the horses are legally seized due to abuse or neglect of the animals.&nbsp;

The Everhart’s daughter earned her master’s degree at K-State, met her future husband, and eventually settled in the Manhattan area. When grandchildren were born, Karen and Dave wanted to be closer to them.&nbsp;

“I told the Board of Directors that we wanted to move closer to Manhattan so maybe it was time to close Rainbow Meadows,” Everhart said. “The Board said, `You’re welcome to relocate, but we want this to continue.’”&nbsp;

After a long search for property, Karen found and bought the place where Rainbow Meadows is today. “God opened the door to this place,” Everhart said. It is located along Highway 77, eight miles south of Junction City and north of the rural community of Woodbine, population 157 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

“This is a mission, this is a ministry,” Everhart said. “These (abused) horses don’t deserve the kind of treatment they’ve received.”.&nbsp;

Since its founding, Rainbow Meadows has assisted in rescuing hundreds of horses. In addition to having horses that are adopted, Rainbow Meadows offers a horse retirement program where owners can provide monthly support for their horses to come to Rainbow Meadows and live out their days in safety and comfort.&nbsp;

Barton Community College celebrated another milestone in its Open Educational Resources (OER) initiative by certifying its 100th course. The three-credit-hour Computer Concepts and Applications course joined the OER line-up to help make Barton classes more accessible and affordable for students.

The foundational computer course became the second course Business Computer Management Instructor Deanna Heier certified for the College’s initiative. The transition of this course to OER represents a significant step towards additional initiative goals since the course is required to complete an associate degree.

"Many of my students, both online and on-campus, made inadequate attempts to complete the course without the textbook because it is expensive,” said Heier. “Cost saving is great, but a student's opportunity for success increases with the new course transition.&nbsp; It is&nbsp;one barrier that could be resolved&nbsp;for both the course and degree with this OER revision."

The Barton Bookstore has supported the initiative from the beginning in its own unique way. The institutionally owned bookstore differs from many of its peers in that a third party does not own and operate it. Bookstore Manager Cecelia Nicolet said it fully supports the use and expansion of the OER initiative across the institution.

“It is the policy of the Barton Bookstore to uphold and support Barton’s mission to provide affordable learning opportunities and resources for students,” she said.

Director of Innovation and Compliance Lee Miller said the support of our campus bookstore is one of the reasons Barton has made significant progress with the OER initiative. “Thank you to all the faculty and staff who helped us reach this new milestone,” she said.

Barton Community College certifies 100th OER course

While Ellis and area communities experienced swift changes during previous years, 1885 and 86 offered some stability for this and other developing prairie communities. Take a moment to examine what changed and what remained the same in the Ellis education system during that time.

1885 faculty numbers held steady at four with Professor Halleck, Mrs. Deutsch, Miss Dennis, and Miss Meade staffing the new building. Student enrollment remained steady with approximately 200 students filling the classroom seats in the new stone building on the south hill.

While curriculum and practice proceeded as it had in past years, someone added fund raising to the school activities. Apparently, the mill levy didn’t budget enough cash for desired equipment so teachers and students sponsored money-making events. One of the first mentioned involved a community sociable that showcased student recitations. Imagine residents putting on their best duds to attend and encourage their children. Funds earned at this program purchased books or apparatus for the school, according to the Ellis Headlight.

Apparently, that first successful fundraiser spurred students and teachers to hold a second that same year to fund an organ for the school. They planned a school entertainment followed by supper for a crowd of 500. Each attendee paid admission of 35 cents (EWH 12-15-1885). Reading between the lines, it appears community members had enough liquid cash they could support these events.

In 1886, the Headlight notes a Friday in-service. Students enjoyed a day out of school while teachers traveled to Hays to attend a day long county teacher association meeting. Topics included How to Teach English; Make the Children Talk; The Sciences—How Much, How Little; Need of Visible Illustration and the Proper Use of Apparatus; The Relation between Speling [sic], Reading, Writing, and Definition; What Are the Corect [sic] Habits of Study and How Can We Aid Pupils in Forming Them; and Adoption of a County Course of Study. There was no reference to how teachers traveled to and from this meeting.

In addition to professional development during the school year, teachers also attended the county normal school held each summer in Hays. They studied such subjects as music, philosophy, geography, arithmetic, didactics (art or science of teaching), calisthenics, physiology, constitution, penmanship, history, orthography, grammar, and reading. All Ellis teachers attended the 1886 normal school (EWH 8-6-86).

A year later in fall of 1887, Mr. Holcomb assumed principal duties, and the district hired another teacher. The school board directed the finishing of one room in the basement for an additional classroom. They also ordered additional desks and chairs out of Chicago (EWH 12-13-87). The growing enrollment reflected the expanding community.

The October 4 Headlight shares that Ellis hosted that year’s county teacher association organization meeting. The school board offered public thanks to Ellis citizens for their “hearty contribution” to the successful gathering.Modern readers can only envision that period’s growing business district and neighborhoods that drew more students to the Ellis school.
