The idea of democracy is equal representation. The city of Hoisington is now accepting applications for two city council spots after two council members moved out of the wards for which they were elected to represent. City Manager Jonathan Mitchell said the council now has vacancies in wards one and two.

"Every meeting is important," he said. "It's important for all of our folks to have a voice. These two council members are coming from different wards. in Hoisington, we have four wards, so a vacancy in two of those means half our community is without the same representation, so we really need to get those filled."

To represent Hoisington in those wards, interested parties must be registered voter in those wards, and must submit a letter of interest to the city by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19. The new councilmembers could be selected at the following Monday's meeting. 

"They'll take letters up until that date, then we'll distribute those to the seated members of the governing body, and they'll discuss those at their meeting on the 24th and potentially select someone from that pool on the 24th."

Karen VanBrimmer and Carrol Nather moved out of wards one and two, respectively. Both remaining terms will expire in January 2025. Anyone with questions about the vacancies can contact the city at (620) 653-4125. Letters of interest may be delivered or mailed to the city office at 109 E. 1st Street, P.O. Box 418, Hoisington, Kansas, 67544.

Monday's Weather

Nothing like visiting an old cemetery to connect past with present. On a windy, cold March 19, 2023, sunlight highlighted sere prairie grasses that blanketed Fort Wallace’s hallowed ground as three western history buffs wandered between gravestones. Kansas wind sharpened freezing temps to remind them that life there is harsh as it certainly was for those posted at the edge of the world from 1865 to 1882.

Following the Civil War, Manifest Destiny and the Homestead Act lured the curious and bold to go West. Sioux, Cheyenne, and other native people resented this encroachment on prime hunting grounds. Ingredients for cultural collision burbled and stewed—finally boiling over through the 1860s-70s.

Former Civil War General, William Tecumseh Sherman, later commander of the Military Division of Missouri authorized construction of garrisoned forts to protect those traveling the Smoky Hill Trail. Fort Wallace (1865 -1882) was the western-most outpost. During these conflicts, many soldiers, scouts, and others died. Survivors laid their remains to rest in the post cemetery.

Following the fort’s decommissioning, authorities ordered military burials removed to Fort Leavenworth in 1886. To preserve history, site caretakers designed and posted markers to document names, ages, nationalities, and causes of death of soldiers and their loved ones who died while posted at Ft. Wallace. As a result, their stories live on.

Interrupting the horizontal plane, a tall cenotaph carved from native limestone, now under a protective covering, records names of 7th cavalrymen who died in battle. To the north lie weathered planks detailing names, ages, and origins of soldiers and scouts from other regiments who died during similar conflicts or for other reasons. Many were immigrants, mostly from Ireland. While some passed away fighting, most buried during the 17 years the fort existed died of diseases, including pneumonia, cholera, diphtheria, and intermittent fever. Accidents, drownings, and quarrels filled additional graves.

While wandering the lane between memorials, I tugged on a scarf and gloves to protect chilled ears and fingers. We didn’t know the temp with windchill, but the cold reminded us that life here is extreme. It made it hard to imagine how three soldiers drowned.

Gazing at the Smoky Hill today, it appears a person could walk across. However, research indicates the military dammed it to create a pond south of the fort. Stifling August temperatures might account for a non-swimmer’s unintended demise as he tried to cool down. Perhaps someone crossed it after a rare torrential rain and found himself swallowed by rising water.

Accidents involving trains and woodcutting ended several lives. Woodcutting risks explain themselves, but train accidents make a person wonder. An engine ran over at least one individual. How’d that happen? Did someone start the train rolling before the guy finished repairing track or did he drunkenly wander steel rails and fail to pay attention?

Shivering inside my wool jacket, I considered wives who joined husbands at this distant post and buried tiny children here. Disease most commonly took young lives. Over time, this once-military cemetery morphed into a community burial ground. Those killed during the Cheyenne raid on the German family were re-interred here. Merchant Peter Robidoux and his family share a memorial at the cemetery’s north end. Local families continue to lay loved ones to rest here.

This stone garden offers history that touches every sense. If you come on an icy morn, you’ll crunch ice and shiver like earlier occupants did. If you show up on a sizzling August afternoon, you’ll understand why some non-swimming, young Irish immigrant laid his uniform on the banks of the Smoky Hill and waded in for his last dip. As you gaze across endless horizon, you grasp why people fought for this landscape.

The Great Bend Senior Center is co-hosting a program with the local League of Women Voters on Monday, April 10 at 12:30 p.m. to help the public understand what the Kansas Water Plan (KWP) means for Barton County. 

League member, Veronica Coons, is the Barton County Conservation District Manager and will give an overview of the KWP and the portions of the plan that address resource concerns in the Great Bend Prairie Aquifer Planning area. 

The public is encouraged to call the GB Senior Center for 12 p.m. lunch reservations and questions at 620-792-3906. Handouts from the KWP will be available that speak to the Great Bend Prairie Regional Advisory Committee.

What the Kansas Water Plan means for Barton Co.

The
drought monitor report as of Tuesday, March 28 indicates exceptional drought creeping
further east and along the southern counties.&nbsp;
Definitely not a good situation.&nbsp; The
six to ten-day outlook (April 4 to 8) indicates a 33 to 50% of leaning to below
normal temperatures and 33 to 40% of leaning to above normal precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (April 6 to
12) indicates a 33 to 40% chance of leaning to below normal temperatures and a
continued 33 to 40% chance of above normal precipitation.&nbsp; In theory, the long-term average indicates we
should be starting to move into our wet” period.

&nbsp;Last week, we discussed the
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) concept of weed control.&nbsp; The principle is to use a variety of weed
control methods, up to and including herbicides, in a safe environmentally
sound manner.&nbsp; The current reality in
today’s agriculture is while we will use a variety of methods, it is very likely
we will have to use herbicides.&nbsp; Today,
how do herbicides work and why that matters.&nbsp;
As a side note, yes, it is possible to grow “organic” field crops
without the use of synthetic chemicals but that presents a set of challenges.&nbsp; Of particular concern in organic production
is typically an increased need for tillage for weed control and with erosion
concerns and the need to conserve soil water, it’s a problem.

Mode of Action (MoA) is simply how
the herbicide injure/kills the plant.&nbsp;
There are many modes of action and they grouped together by similar MoAs
so you understand how it works.&nbsp; We
aren’t going into detail as there are many groups.&nbsp; Suffice it to say that in some way they
affect plant cells or their ability to develop and reproduce in some way.&nbsp; They may affect photosynthesis or cell
replication or energy transfer or membrane stability and the list goes on.&nbsp; Some examples include ALS Inhibitors, Root
Growth Inhibitors, Growth Regulators, Photosynthesis Inhibitors, Pigment
Synthesis Inhibitors, Aromatic Amino Acid Synthesis Inhibitors, and Shoot
Growth Inhibitors for example.&nbsp; These are
broad categories and the are groups within them with over twenty in all.&nbsp; Some are “selective” and some nonselective
meaning they only affect certain types of plants such as only grasses or broadleaves
or pretty much effect all types of flowering plants.&nbsp; Some are residual, typically soil applied,
while others are not.&nbsp; Some only effect
the tissue they contact while others are systemic and will travel throughout
the plant to where they will be effective.

So why does this matter?&nbsp; Most of you are probably aware of the
increasing resistance to certain herbicides like glyphosate and atrazine from
producers relying and over using them year after year.&nbsp; Since plants are genetically diverse, we kill
of the susceptible plants while favoring the reproduction of those partially or
totally able to metabolize the active ingredient and we shift the population
fairly quickly to be resistant to the active ingredient.&nbsp; By using several modes of action, either varying
them from year to year, within the crop year, or tank mixing several modes of
action, we can prevent/alleviate this problem.&nbsp;
It costs more money but is cheaper than dealing with resistant weeds.

Barton Ag Instructor Dr. Vic Martin - Herbicides and Modes of Action

Sandra Burton has returned to her roots to offer custom massages to her clients at Renue Salon, Spa &amp; Fashion Boutique, 1419 Main. Burton is a licensed massage therapist with 24 years of experience and more than 750 hours of training.

A 1976 graduate of Great Bend High School, Burton integrates Swedish relaxation, trigger point therapy, targeted deep tissue and fascia lengthening “to get the most effective results. I can also enhance your massage session with heated compresses for your back, neck, eyes and feet.

“In addition, I use a top-of-the-line percussion device, more commonly known as a ‘massage gun.’ This enhances circulation and depth of touch, while breaking up connective tissue that binds the muscles. It can be used in light touch and deep-tissue applications.”

Burton said she and her new massage colleague, Ashley Fugitt, complement one another to offer whatever clients need.

“Ashley is nationally certified, which indicates that Renue chooses only highly qualified massage therapists,” Burton said. “We are a team whose priority is to satisfy our clientele.

“We both want the community to understand that massage is more than an occasional luxury,” she continued. “It is a vital part of healthcare. Regular massage can actually re-educate your brain to avoid stress patterns that cause pain.”

PBS show to feature Troy Moore from Ellinwood Hospital

The COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing stoppage of life as we know it hurt many aspects of the economy. The real estate market was not one of them. Barton County Appraiser Wendy Prosser said that boom in the housing market ultimately led to higher property tax valuations this year.

"In 2021 and 2022, the sales market, with the lower interest rate, went crazy," she said. "We've talked to realtors, and they've even made the comments that they've never seen an unsettled market or an increase so sharply in the market like that."

Many considerations are made when setting the fair-market value of a property, including sales of other properties within a three-year period. By statute, the appraiser's office must set the value within 10 percent of that fair-market value, which is what the property would sell for on the open market. The good news is market increases have slowed down in some parts of the country. The bad news is Kansas is not always on the forefront of those changes.

"We've heard that the housing bubble has burst, and that's out on the east and west coast," Prosser said. "Unfortunately, what we find happens out there happens about a year later in the metro-Kansas City area, and then it slowly trickles down here. We don't see the effects quite as fast, so we're not only delayed, but then the effects of it going up or going down usually are delayed compared to the very fast, very sharp increase in the years like we had in 2021 and 2022."

Prosser reminds property owners they can appeal the valuation through an informal hearing process, which her office schedules in 30-minute increments Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., including over the lunch hour. Owners have 30 days to appeal the valuation. Part of the process includes reviewing the sales comparison sheet in the appraiser's office.

"They can look at that sheet and see what kind of method we utilize for their property and what sales they were compared to," said Prosser. "If they've never come in for a hearing before, and you have questions on your values, we encourage you to do that."

Property owners still unhappy after the first round of appeals have one more opportunity to contest the valuation through a small claims process. The appeal form is sent to the Board of Tax Appeals in Topeka. Through a conference call, both the appraiser's office and the taxpayer have the opportunity to make their case. A hearing officer will then issue a document stating the fair-market value. Prosser calls it several levels of oversight.

"Not only do I answer to the county administrator, the county commissioners, our taxpayers, but I also answer to all of the individuals at the property valuation division in Topeka," she said. "I have lots of bosses."

Barton Co. Appraiser explains valuation appeal process

April is a busy time for Family Crisis Center, Inc. in Great Bend. Director Kylee Graves and two of her program directors attended Wednesday's Barton County Commission meeting with the purpose of proclaiming April as Sexual Assault and Child Abuse and Awareness Months. Domestic and Sexual Violence Director Amy Norris shared some statistics as part of one proclamation.

"Whereas one in three women and nearly one in six men experience some form of contact, sexual violence in their lifetimes," she said. "And whereas one incident of rape is reported to Kansas law enforcement every seven hours, 20 minutes, 55 seconds."

Braeley Hammeke, program director for the Child Advocacy Center, said all children deserve a life free of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, and they deserve to have proper food, clothing, and shelter. She said child abuse and neglect is a community problem that requires involvement by all. 

"Effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of partnerships created among social service agencies, schools, faith communities, civic organizations, law enforcement agencies, and the business community," she told commissioners.

The Family Crisis Center will display a "What were you wearing" exhibit at various locations in April. The exhibit emphasizes that no matter what you wear, sexual assault still happens. The display will be at the Great Bend Public Library from April 4-21, and the Barton Community College Student Union from April 5-27.

The Great Bend City Council will receive a motion next Monday night to
approve the low bid from Sharkey Construction for $99,850 for the Brit Spaugh Skate
Park concrete replacement. 
The current surface at the skate park was resurfaced in the late 1990s. This
skate park area on Morton Street was originally constructed for tennis courts
in the 1970s. The layers of asphalt and concrete have deteriorated over the
years. 
Through the .15% quality of life sales tax fund, Great Bend has allocated
$130,000 for the resurfacing of the 125’ x 125’ area. The remaining balance
will be used for new fencing and repairs to the ramps. The project is expected to be completed
by June.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The city council will discuss the agenda item at their meeting on Monday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m.

Great Bend receives $100K bid to resurface skate park

If you have been following me for the last few weeks, I have been highlighting some of the forty 4-H projects that are available in Kansas! This week’s project highlights Horticulture, Fiber Arts, and Geology which are all good reasons to get outside and explore!

The Horticulture project seems like it would be just be about gardening but the curriculum starts with when, where, and what to plant and continues through selling produce, studying pollination, and food industry careers. Along the way, youth learn about cool versus warm season vegetables, plant parts, and garden tools. Youth also explore seed varieties and preventative pest control. More and more families are interested in growing their own fruit and vegetables and Horticulture is a great project for families to work together!

I love to see the continued activity in our Fiber Arts projects. These include knitting, crochet, quilting, macramé, cross-stitch and other needle work, rug-making, and spinning and weaving. During a day camp last summer at Dilly &amp; Doc, youth used a stick from the yard to make the start of a macramé plant hanger which combined Fiber Arts and Horticulture! Learning about different fibers can provide opportunities to explore how a variety of yarns are made and dyed. More advanced 4-H members may purchase wool and dye it themselves before turning it into an item as part of this project.

For youth who love to explore outdoors and always have a pocket full of treasures, the Geology project may be a great fit for them! 4-H Youth learn about rocks, minerals, and fossils. This begins in the local area and expands across Kansas and other regions as the project develops. In addition to collecting a variety of specimens, youth practice record-keeping as they log the location and type of each sample found. They also learn about geological formations as well as types and impacts of erosion. A state 4-H geology trip is scheduled each year in a different part of Kansas providing hands-on learning!

Barton Arts Movement announces sidewalk chalk contest winners

This is part three of a series on the importance of academic integrity at Barton. The college will feature student stories throughout the spring semester that help showcase values of academic integrity. These values include trust, responsibility, honesty, courage, fairness, and respect.

Barton at Fort Leavenworth student Tionna Caldwell knows the value of respect goes beyond her personal endeavors. She believes it is imperative to exhibit and reciprocate it not only as she finishes her education, but also as she pursues her career as a dental hygienist. &nbsp; &nbsp; “Academic integrity is important to me personally because doing the work is a fundamental part of the process,” she said. “Establishing longevity in my career starts with me doing the work. Today’s society has so many cheat codes and life hacks, but my educational credentials are part of my foundation. It is unethical to manipulate your academic credentials.”&nbsp; &nbsp; Caldwell, 27, did not go to college after high school due to having to work. She moved from Washington, D.C. to Leavenworth to help her mother care for her grandmother and landed a job as a Department of Defense Employee at a daycare on Fort Leavenworth, and in doing so, she qualified for Barton’s LSEC classes that she could take at no cost.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I just work, work, worked,” she said. “My whole family always has. I can't even think back to a generation that has gone to college or finished college, and I just realized I have to stop this process and decide what I want from my own life. On a piece of paper, it sounds so simple, but I really had to learn how to advocate for myself. I learned how to articulate to superiors and even some of my family that put barriers in my academic process. Furthering my education is a form of self-care for my mental health. I had adopted a stoic personality starting the process of going back to school. However, after a couple of classes and joining Phi Theta Kappa (National Honor Society) I have had a phenomenal academic experience. From the inside looking out, there is a much more raw and redemptive story than people see from the outside.”&nbsp;

Caldwell started with a personal finance class that served as a springboard for her.&nbsp; &nbsp; “That class helped get my life right,” she said. “We did a group project about living costs, like all the different insurances and owning a home, and I realized, wow, I need to get my finances together. It was just a really good wake-up call for me.”&nbsp;

Her time at Barton helped her reflect on how integrity and respect fit into her personal life, but also how these virtues are important for academic institutions to keep as a visible priority. &nbsp; &nbsp; “Respect plays a role in academic integrity because of how much self-development takes place for students while enrolled,” she said. “At an educational institution, people have to remain impartial and open-minded. A new platform of ideas will be introduced. Acknowledging our instructors, mentors, and classmates and showing them respect is essential because of their academic influence, and it is at the core of our very own decency. Learning how to enter a conversation with confidence and being selective of the dialogue that comes out of my mouth is evidence of how respect has been productive in my life. Eagle Radio's News Week in Review

Editor's Note: Cole Reif spent nine years broadcasting Hoisington football games with Dr. Blake Herres. Some opinions are added to the story.

There are many hard-working, generous individuals throughout our
community. These men and women donate their time, give financially and try to
make the area around them better. With all those outstanding citizens in mind,
there are very few that better embodied the definition of a community servant
and supporter more than Dr. Blake Herres. 
“He tried to always make some kid shine, whether they came off the bench or if
they were a starter,” said Gene Manweiler, long-time friend of Herres. “He
would always try to say something good about what he or she brought to the
game. He was always good about uplifting kids on the radio.” 
A life-long Hoisington resident, Herres began broadcasting Hoisington High
School football and basketball games on the radio in 2001. For more than 20
years, he was the welcoming, familiar voice on the airwaves Friday nights.
Herres passed away March 23 at the age of 70 from esophageal cancer, but he left an impact on several
lives and a community that will last many more lifetimes. 
“There were a lot of things that stood out about Blake,” said Joel Mason,
Hoisington High School principal. “Number one was his genuine passion and
concern for the town of Hoisington. Any time he talked, you always got that
impression of that genuine interest for our community, our school and our kids.”

Rooted in the northern Barton County town, Herres graduated from Hoisington
High School in 1970. Receiving education from Kansas State University and the
University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Dentistry, he married Julie
Stone in 1975. They moved to Hoisington in 1979 as Blake started his dental
practice. 
“He was down to business inside the office,” said Janet Jonas, who worked with Herres
for nearly 30 years at his dental office. “He treated patients like they were
his best friends. He was very honest with them and conservative. He gave them
options. Every day we tackled every job we had.” 
That sense of support to the community went beyond serving on the USD 431 Board
of Education for 12 years. Herres spent many years as a volunteer coach, making
sure he gave his daughters the best chance to succeed in athletics. 
“We really didn’t start interacting with each other until our daughters began
playing sports together in middle school,” said Manweiler. “Blake and I got together
and decided we’d start coaching the girls in basketball their 7th
grade summer. We did a lot of road trips. After the girls graduated, Blake and I
continued our road trips together because we enjoyed it so much.”

That community support was felt largely as Herres operated his dental practice
in Hoisington for more than 40 years until retiring in 2022. 
“In a town our size, we have relatively few businesses compared to a bigger
community,” said Mason. “Those businesses are hit up by anybody and everybody.
He was definitely asked to be a big booster for many of our activities here at
the school district.” 
Friday nights during the fall, you would see Herres walk into the high school
football stadium, make his way up to the press box, pull out his binoculars and
get settled in for another evening of Cardinal football. Blake was on the 100.7
FM broadcast for more than 230 football games, and hundreds more with the
Hoisington basketball programs. 
“When I see him interacting with kids, of all ages, at sporting events, those
kids treated Blake with more respect than they did with most adults,” said
Manweiler. “Those kids respected his opinion. When he would give them advice,
it was almost an honor to get advice from Blake Herres. That was so cool, and I
saw that all my life.”

Herres would frequent as many Cardinal sporting events as possible from middle
school to high school softball, volleyball, baseball or football. 
“He always had a positive spin, even when things weren’t going well,” said
Mason. “It was always refreshing seeing him at all of the events.” 
“He cared about his patients a lot,” said Jonas. “He was a great dentist and a
great man. I appreciate everything he did for me.” 
After each broadcast, Blake would lean in with a smirk and give me (Cole Reif) a firm
handshake. I would tell him "nice job, you sounded good." He would
respond with “I’m just riding your coattails.” As a mere broadcaster, I rarely
disagree with a doctor, but Blake was wrong. Myself, and the community that knew Blake, were riding his coattails…and it was a hell of a ride.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Community is everything: The supportive ‘voice’ of Hoisington

Sunflower Electric Power Corp. (Sunflower) has promoted Darren Metcalf to manager of facilities and fleet.

Metcalf will be responsible for managing the function of building, grounds, and facilities maintenance for Sunflower’s nine administrative offices and multiple leased offices. He will also oversee Sunflower’s fleet management program, including acquisition, retirements, maintenance and tracking programs, and fleet repair and replacement. In addition, he will institute and enhance Sunflower’s Department of Transportation (DOT) inspection programs to ensure compliance with DOT regulations and documentation requirements.

Metcalf will serve as the liaison between the facilities and fleet departments to other functional groups throughout Sunflower and collaborate with department managers to understand and meet their needs.

With Sunflower since 2018, he served as facilities supervisor and was instrumental in leading and executing significant remodels of Sunflower’s Great Bend, Kan., office and service center locations, both of which were large and complex capital projects. Other notable efforts he directed include several capital facility improvement projects, development of streamlined facilities maintenance programs, and implementation of a facilities request and work order management system.

Metcalf has a diverse and extensive background with knowledge, skills, and experience in residential and commercial design and construction, project management, residential and commercial building repair, plumbing, HVAC, electrical installation and repair, automotive and diesel repair. Prior to joining Sunflower, he owned and operated a construction and remodeling business for more than 25 years. He also held roles in pastoral ministry in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Liberal, Kan.

A native of Colorado Springs, he resides in Garden City, Kan., with his wife, Joanne who is also employed at Sunflower. They have 2 sons: Tyler, and his wife, Kendall; and

Austin, and his wife, Shaylene; are active members of Cornerstone Church in Garden City.

Sunflower Massage hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the opening of its new massage business in the Great Bend area. The event took place on March 9.

Owner and Licensed Massage Therapist, Sandra Burton, brings over 24 years of experience to her new business, offering custom massage sessions with a range of techniques, including Swedish, targeted deep tissue, trigger point therapy and fascia lengthening. 

"Massage is not just an occasional treat. It is a proven method of self-care, injury rehab, and treatment for repetitive motion and repetitive position injuries," said Burton. "I look forward to bringing relief, relaxation, and renewal to the people of Great Bend and Barton County."

Wheat farmers are, by nature, optimistic, but that optimism is starting to wane in southwest Kansas, where much of the wheat that was drilled last fall has yet to emerge.

Only 19% of the Kansas wheat crop is currently rated in good to excellent condition, with another 52% rated poor to very poor, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. According to the March 27 report, 77% of subsoil moisture supplies are rated short to very short.

“We’re eating through subsoil moisture,” said Tyler Ediger who farms near Meade, Kansas. “We need a slow inch to inch and a half of moisture.”

Average annual precipitation for the area is 23 inches, but over the past year, they’ve received roughly half that.

Still, Ediger says they’re better off than most in the area, having received a half inch a couple weeks ago. Their fields have a stand, so they’re not blowing yet, but winds have been strong and sustained for much of the area.

North of Lakin in Kearny County, Gary Millershaski’s fields aren’t faring as well. An area that typically gets 18.8” of annual precipitation, they’ve only received 8.6” over the past 365 days. While last year’s crop was also raised in drought conditions, it had the benefit of some subsoil moisture, which has all but been depleted by now. Even the residue left from last year’s crop has been reduced by wind and drought.

“We’re totally out of residue,” Millershaski said. “There’s nothing out there.”

He said insurance adjusters will be in the area over the next couple weeks. Many of the fields that haven’t even emerged will be adjusted out, giving farmers like Millershaski few options for ways to protect the blowing soil.

“I’m not going to chase another crop in dry soil,” he said. “Right now, it’s all about getting by and spending the least amount possible.”

In Sheridan County, Brett Oelke’s fields are surviving on half their average precipitation over the past two years as well.

“We’re pretty fortunate right now,” he said, because the moisture on this wheat crop has come with a timely three-quarters of an inch of rain in October when it was drilled and another inch and a half of moisture from snow since January.

Oelke’s moisture probe proved that even though his area has gotten some timely moisture, the crop is far from trouble. Reaching only two feet down, he said last year’s subsoil moisture was four feet.

“We’re 22 to 24 inches behind over the past few years,” he said.

In the sandy soils of Barber County, farmers are also dealing with less than half their average moisture.

“We need a rain really bad — and soon,” Chris Boyd said.

The wheat plants are small and don’t have many tillers. Fields in the Isabel area have received only one inch of rain total since the crop was planted.

In addition to fields that have been blown out completely from strong winds, they are also dealing with winter grain mites and army cut worms, which will limit yield potential. These pests can be controlled by applying an insecticide or pesticide, an added expense for a crop without a lot of potential.

“We were blessed with a nice harvest last year, but that crop used all of the subsoil moisture,” Boyd said. “With virtually no moisture on this current crop and nothing in the forecast, producers are faced with difficult decisions on how many more inputs — such as insecticide for grain mites — to invest on a potential crop failure.”

Rain is critical right now as temperatures begin to warm up and the wheat crop comes out of dormancy.

“We’ll take whatever moisture we can get,” said Millershaski.

With hit and miss showers mostly avoiding so﻿uthwest Kansas this past week and few scattered showers forecast in the next 10 days, farmers remain hopeful for additional timely rains.

“We’ll stay optimistic,” Ediger said.

The wheat planted into fallow ground has a decent stand, but wheat planted into failed corn where there is a lot of residue has a marginal stand. About half of the wheat in the area is still emerging because of the dry conditions last fall. Because of the heavier clay soils in the area, soil samples show that there are not a lot of nutrient requirements because of failed crops last fall, and only about half of usual nitrogen rates need to be applied. Over the past two weeks, Tanner reports he has been banding fertilizer on. Because of the cold temperatures in the area, the wheat is just starting to green up, so producers are still waiting to see what it will look like coming out of dormancy.

There are a few summer fallow acres that look decent and some wheat behind corn that looks ok. Wheat behind soybeans looks really rough. They are thinking about having an adjuster come out to look at some of their wheat.

The area is pretty dry, but Schemm said they were blessed with some snow that equated to 50 to 60 hundredths of moisture. They do see some potential in the crop, but it has been cold. The wheat took some hits of cold with no snow cover, so there may be some freeze damage.

Crop adjusters are coming out next week. Millershaski estimates that two thirds of his wheat will be abandoned, but he can’t plant a spring crop because there is no subsoil moisture. There’s very little residue left and the fields are blowing.

Suppes reported that one quarter of the wheat is not up yet and will be turned in to adjusters. He did topdress, but overall, this is a worse crop than last year.

Keesling reported they&nbsp;have an adjuster coming out to look at one third of their wheat. The conditions are not good. He said they've only received 1/2" of moisture since January 1 and 1/10" in March. Things are tough. With the extremely sandy soils, there’s going to be a lot of abandonment. Wheat is blowing out.

Wheat stands are a bit patchy, but it’s starting to green up nicely. A lot of fertilizer top dressing is going on in the area, and producers have pulled cattle off. They are dry compared to normal, but are fortunate to have received some moisture. They will need more rain as the wheat starts growing again this spring.
