Central Kansas Christian Academy in Great Bend is hosting free kindergarten screenings the week of April 3-6 by appointment. These screenings are offered each spring to facilitate children's transition from home or preschool to CKCA's Christian school education. It's an opportunity for 5-year-olds to accompany their parents to get a sneak preview of what going to school will be like. 

Each child will be screened to ensure they are ready for kindergarten, and parents get to meet with the school staff and teachers. To be eligible to enter kindergarten, children must be five (5) years of age on or before Aug. 31, 2023.

At Tuesday’s Barton Community College Board of Trustees meeting, Vice
President of Student Services Angie Maddy revealed responses from a survey
reflecting students and employees. From the 288 responses, the majority
of the entries had positive comments or ratings on their experience at Barton. 

One
area of concern that Maddy addressed were the responses to the question, “Over
the past 12 months, have you ever experienced discriminatory events at Barton
because of your political orientation?” Of the answers, 22% of the students
said they experienced discriminatory events one to two times. "I always tell the students I hope they make friends and meet people they like," said Maddy. "I hope that they will look out for each other and be good neighbors. I tell them that they don't have to be friends with each other but you do have to be civil to each other. So I bring it down to...at the very least be respectful to each other." 
The survey results came from the spring 2022 semester, and only 4% of the
employees surveyed stated they experienced discriminatory events because of
their political orientation. Trustees Chairman Mike Johnson said some of those
experiences may have happened off campus and also may be a reflection of a
change in times. "In today's society, I think a lot of people view a lot of things discriminatory that were never thought that before in the past," said Johnson. "I think that's a societal issue." 
When asked if they were treated with respect at Barton, 84% of the student
responses agreed and zero percent disagreed.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

From the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce...

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce announced today that it will no longer be managing Expo Buildings 1 and 2 at the Great Bend Expo Complex. The Chamber's Board of Directors determined that owning and maintaining the buildings no longer aligns with the Chamber's mission and is not financially feasible for the organization. Ownership and management of the buildings now lies within the City of Great Bend.

The Chamber constructed the buildings in the late 1970s and early 1980s to house the 3I Show, which brought positive revenue to further the Chamber's mission over the last 40 years. However, with no agriculture show and a focus on new initiatives within the strategic plan, the Chamber will be stepping back from the management of the buildings.

As a non-profit organization funded by its membership, the Chamber receives no public funding. The Chamber's Board of Directors have encouraged the City of Great Bend and other potential partners/lessees to continue making improvements to the entire complex enjoyed by the community at large.

"We are proud of the role Expo Buildings 1 and 2 have played in the community over the years," said Megan Barfield, President of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce. "We are confident that the City of Great Bend and future partners will be able to continue providing the community with the opportunity to use these facilities for events and gatherings."

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce will continue to support the community through its mission to promote economic growth and advocate for businesses in Great Bend and the surrounding areas.

Chamber transferring ownership of Expo buildings to City of Great Bend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Director of Broadband Development Jade Piros de Carvalho wants to be sure low income Kansans know of a way to reduce or eliminate their cost for internet service through the Affordable Connectivity Program.

"We are embarking on a robust outreach campaign to help low-income Kansans recognize that this program exists,"&nbsp;Piros de Carvalho said. "This program can reduce the cost of your internet service by $30, or, for some providers who have offered high speed 100 megabit speeds for only $30, you can get it free. This is available to anybody who has household income that falls below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines."

The below graphic represents 100% of the guidelines, so, based on your family size, if you make less than twice these amounts annually, you would likely qualify for ACP.

In other words, a family of four that makes less than $60,000 a year would likely be eligible.

"Additionally, a lot of people aren't aware of this, it also provides a $100 discount on a tablet or a computer,"&nbsp;Piros de Carvalho said. "You could also get a device with this program."

There are many programs like Lifeline, SNAP and Free and Reduced Lunch that have, in some manner, income guidelines already below the 200% of FPL level, so if you qualify for those, you qualify for this.

"If you are trying to access the internet only from your phone, you are probably not as able to apply for a job, or take advantage of telehealth with your health care provider or work remotely or further your education,"&nbsp;Piros de Carvalho said. "That device is just as important as the access."

Broadband Director: Low income Kansans can save on internet

The Kans for Kids Radiothon is referred to as “the best day ever” and
the time has arrived to have the best day ever. The 12th annual radiothon
on Eagle Radio stations is Friday, March 31 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eagle’s Program
Director Shannon Towns said listeners will hear stories from children and families
that Kans for Kids has reached out to in their time of need. 
"The radiothon this year is going to be a little different," said Towns. "There will be a lot of songs incorporated throughout the day. There will be inspirational songs and songs that lift you up. The day is all about bringing awareness to Kans for Kids and what it stands for." 
Kans For Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation started in 1994 by giving back
financially to families with children living with cancer. All the pledges
throughout the day will benefit the nonprofit organization based in Hoisington. "We're bringing some of the kids in over the noon hour to take over the radio stations," said Towns. "They'll get to play DJ for an hour, they'll pick the songs. You'll get to hear them just being kids...which will be nice." 
The radiothon, presented by Comfort Pro, will air on all Eagle Radio stations,

"The radiothon this year is going to be a little different," said Towns. "There will be a lot of songs incorporated throughout the day. There will be inspirational songs and songs that lift you up. The day is all about bringing awareness to Kans for Kids and what it stands for." 
Kans For Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation started in 1994 by giving back
financially to families with children living with cancer. All the pledges
throughout the day will benefit the nonprofit organization based in Hoisington. "We're bringing some of the kids in over the noon hour to take over the radio stations," said Towns. "They'll get to play DJ for an hour, they'll pick the songs. You'll get to hear them just being kids...which will be nice."

Barton Community College reported a “medical emergency” Thursday afternoon on their Great Bend campus.&nbsp; According to their statement, “Campus is completely safe and secure. No students, employees, or members of the public that were on campus are in danger or were in danger.”

The college’s communications team notified the media that no further information would come from the college on the extent of the emergency and that future questions would have to be answered by law enforcement.&nbsp; According to a Barton entity on campus, the emergency involved a non-student adult.&nbsp;

The college’s communications team did note they would be sending out grieving consultation options and suicide prevention information to students and faculty if needed.&nbsp;

Exercise is often referred to as a “miracle drug,” and some physicians have been known to write “exercise prescriptions” for their patients. The physical and mental health benefits of moving more are astounding. These range from having more energy, a better outlook on life, and getting better sleep to preventing and managing many types of chronic disease, like diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, stroke, osteoporosis, and up to eight types of cancer. Exercise is good for physical and mental health.

Often, inactivity is more to blame than age when older people lose the ability to do things on their own. Lack of physical activity also can lead to more visits to the doctor, more hospitalizations, more uses of medicines for a variety of illnesses, and more of your hard-earned dollars spent on health care. The old saying, “if you don’t use it, you lose it,” is so true when it comes to moving our bodies.

You are probably aware of these benefits, and the consequences for not being active, and yet this knowledge alone may not be enough to get you moving. Why is that?

If you approach physical activity only as a tool for improving health and losing weight, as we are socialized to do, it feels like another chore to add to your already overloaded to-do list. If you are relatively young and healthy, the threat of developing a chronic illness may be too far off to be relevant right now.

So, what is relevant at this moment? What benefits can you enjoy immediately? Are you feeling stressed and need a better way to manage? Could you benefit from time to think and clear your head? Do you feel sluggish and want more energy? Could you benefit from better sleep? How about your mood – would you like to be more positive around your family, friends and co-workers?

When you view physical activity as a means of enhancing your daily well-being, it becomes part of your life that has purpose and meaning. It becomes something you want to do, rather than a chore. It becomes a gift and something to look forward to. Not something you have to do, but rather something you get to do. Take note of how you feel after exercising. Do you feel more energized, strong, happy? Remember those feelings when it comes time to exercise and sometimes that can be the motivation to exercise again!

You also know yourself the best so finding something you enjoy doing is key. There is no one best activity for everyone, rather it is finding something you enjoy doing. Some people need to be around others to motivate them. Other people want to exercise on their own. Life will inevitably get in the way so just like everything else, perseverance can be important.

After 23 years of senior leadership at Clara Barton Medical Center, Jim Blackwell has elected to resign his post as President and CEO. Jim has accepted a consulting opportunity with another not-for-profit organization in Kansas. He plans to remain engaged with CBMC for leadership direction as the board of trustees evaluate their succession opportunities.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to lead this organization,” said Blackwell. “We are gifted with the most amazing medical staff with whom any CEO could ever hope to collaborate, along with an incredibly supportive board, and 318 outstanding employee ambassadors! Xpress Wellness Urgent Care announced the addition of a new pediatric-themed exam room and kids' corner and hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony in partnership with the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce on March 22.

The new exam room and kids' corner have been designed with a Finding Nemo theme and brought to life by local artist Tabitha Schenk. In addition to the colorful and engaging environment, the room also features a TV playing kid's shows all day to keep young patients occupied during wait times. The front lobby also has a special kids' corner with puzzles and coloring activities to help entertain little ones while their parent's check in.

"We realized that our clinic had a very sterile medical feel to it and was not as kid-friendly/welcoming as we would like it to be. We wanted to create an environment that would make our young patients feel comfortable and at ease during their visit," said Kristen Yarmer, APRN of Xpress Wellness Urgent Care in Great Bend.

Xpress Wellness Urgent Care is an urgent care facility that offers a wide range of services, including acute illness treatment, lab testing, in-house radiology, and occupational medicine services. They also provide sports physicals for only $25 with $5 of every exam going back to the patient's school.

The Great Bend clinic has six employees, including Kristen Yarmer, APRN; Kelsea Kirmer, MA; Sydnee Carder, PSS; Kristin Zenner, APRN; Chantelle Brown, MA; and Desiree Workman, PSS. Xpress Wellness Urgent Care has been serving patients for three years in Great Bend and across Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. 

"We want to provide quality and timely medical care to our patients and their families. We aim to treat each patient as a valued individual, and strive to make their experience with us as positive and stress-free as possible," added Yarmer.

Xpress Wellness celebrates new pediatric-themed exam room in Great Bend

Barton County's Facade Improvement Grant Program has been a hit since its inception in 2021. The Barton County Commission allocated $630,000 to 45 businesses in the program's first round in 2021, then renewed the program with another $250,000 in potential funding in February. At Wednesday's commission meeting, Kevin Keller with Keller Real Estate &amp; Insurance kicked off a round of requests from six businesses.

"Our business has been in operation since 1968, and we've been in that location since either 1980 or 81," he told the commission. "The inside we've updated, but the outside is getting to look somewhat old and worn, so this facade program just fits perfectly at the alley of what we were wanting to do."

The program matches 75 percent of project expenses with a maximum award of $20,000. That means a business can complete approximately $26,000 in renovations for just $6,000 out of pocket. The second round of the program does limit eligible businesses to those on or visible from the main corridor of Barton County communities. Commission Chair Shawn Hutchinson explained why only 25 percent of the can be used toward windows.

"The thing we were trying to avoid with that, was last year we had a lot of people that applied just for windows," he said. "That would really help their energy bill, but that really defeats the spirit of what we're trying to do of cleaning up the downtown, making it a better looking environment; it's a facade grant."

Keller Real Estate requested $20,000 and will contribute $48,900 out of pocket to their improvement at 1101 Williams in Great Bend. Todd Clark with Magna Dry, 1724 Main Street in Great Bend, said his company will pay more than $56,000, in addition to $20,000 from the county, for a new coat of gray paint, a blue awning, and a blue neon sign.

Greg King and Larry Gale spoke on behalf of The Ancient Free &amp; Accepted Masons of Kansas, located at 1917 17th Stree in Great Bend. Though a non-profit organization, the Masons do still pay property tax on the building. They requested $17,091 and will match 25 percent of the project, which includes gray paint.

Eric Doan and Donita Frantz requested $13,258 for upgrades to H&amp;R Block and Doan's Outdoor Store at 2023 Lakin Ave. in Great Bend. Doan said the area is a hub of activity, with stores like Great Bend Coffee and Bling in the same block. The business will match 25 percent of the request for renovations that include installing a set of double doors and adding steel to the awning to match area businesses.

Matthew Gerritzen continues to make improvements along Main Street on the south edge of Hoisington. His Sundown AgriSupply LLC business is already operating out of a new 72-foot by 120-foot warehouse. He will match 27 percent of a $20,000 request  for improvements to the former gas station located at 463 S. Main in Hoisington, so the building can match the new warehouse. In Ellinwood, Fred Gunn will match 27 percent of his $20,000 request for improvements to Gunn's Antique's &amp; Collectibles located at 107 N. Main.

Thursday's Weather

For the Great Bend Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau, their mission is
all about promoting the city’s attractions and getting more visitors to come to
town. CVB Director Christina Hayes feels like her staff has been able to get
Great Bend’s name out there to potential travelers through a variety of
resources. 
Hayes attended the Southern Travelers Explore Conference in Irving, Texas
earlier this month. Hayes was able to convince 22 travel writers or bloggers to come to Great Bend. 
"When travel writers write and blog about us...when someone searches for fun things to do in Kansas, it's more likely that Great Bend will have more hits," said Hayes. "It produces content online that is attractive to visitors and people who Google their own trips." 
In February, Great Bend CVB staff attended the Omaha Boat Sports and Travel
Show where they talked to more than 2,300 people and gave away 700 visitor
guides and goodie bags.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Getting Great Bend’s name out to bloggers and travelers 

Kansas State University Western Kansas Research and Extension Centers will host a webinar on April 4 from noon to 1 p.m. CT on decision-making for grass turnout in Western Kansas.&nbsp;

In many areas of the state, grass growth was very limited last year and continuing dry conditions in recent months raise questions about how livestock producers should plan for the coming growing season.&nbsp;

“Throughout much of 2022 and early 2023, producers have downsized herds but also shopped for forage resources from broader areas to retain as much of their herds as possible,” says Sandy Johnson, K-State extension beef specialist. “As normal grass turnout time arrives, producers are evaluating the supply of harvested forages in relationship to forage demand and when grazing will become an option again.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jason Warner, K-State extension beef cow-calf specialist, adds “When and how grass turnout occurs is a big decision this year as we are attempting to mitigate high prices for hay and other feeds while avoiding further damage to already stressed pastures.&nbsp; Information presented will be applicable to producers all across Kansas and surrounding areas.”&nbsp;

Keith Harmoney, K-State range scientist at Hays, has studied historical data from range research at the experiment station including droughts in the 1930s and 1950s as well as more recent droughts and will use all of this to share his thoughts on planning and decision-making for this spring.&nbsp;

BOOR: Webinar on decision making for grass turnout

On Monday, March 27 at approximately 4:04 p.m., an officer with the Great Bend Police Department observed a vehicle traveling eastbound in the 5200 block of 10th Street, with a driver who was known to the officer to not possess a valid drivers license. 

The officer confirmed with Barton County Dispatch that the driver still did not possess a valid drivers license and conducted a traffic stop in the 5100 block of 9th Street. During the traffic stop, K9 Menta was utilized to conduct a free air sniff of the vehicle. After a positive alert of the odor of narcotics in the vehicle, officers conducted a search of the vehicle. 

During the search, officers located methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Arrested on scene was the driver, identified as Justin Herren, age 39. Herren was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and operating a motor vehicle without a license. Herren was transported to the Barton County Jail where he was booked and confined in lieu of a $10,000 bond.

K-9 alerts to narcotics, man arrested in Great Bend

GREAT BEND — The Barton Community College Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to approve a new tuition and fees rate of $50 per credit hour for select high school audiences. Starting with the Summer 2023 semester, high school students enrolling in face-to-face classes on the Barton County campus, in person at their partnered high school, or through a Partnered Online partnership will qualify for the new rate.

Previously, high school students paid the same tuition rate as post-secondary students. This new $50 tuition rate is a significant step toward providing more accessible courses for high school students across the state. In addition to this rate change, Barton recently added a scholarship for Barton Online classes for Kansas high school students to bring the cost down to $75 per credit hour.

Director of Early College Opportunities Karly Little said the new rate and online scholarship will allow more students to get ahead and take advantage of Barton’s early college opportunities including general education courses. High school students that qualify for the new rate may be able to take the courses as dual credit, but she said students should check with their high school counselor to see whether their school is an early college partner and if the class would count on their high school transcript or impact their class schedules.

“With the new tuition rate for high school students, taking classes on the Barton County campus or at our partnered schools, either in person or via Partnered Online, we hope to give more students access to coursework at a price they can afford,” she said.&nbsp;

Little said in addition to the new credit hour rate and scholarship for online classes, some classes utilize low-cost (under $50) or no-cost textbooks, helping students in these classes save even more money. &nbsp; A state-approved list of career technical education (CTE) courses is still being offered at no tuition charged for Kansas high school students through a state program called Excel in CTE.&nbsp;&nbsp;Students may also qualify to use the Barton Online $75 per credit hour scholarship to complete career technical classes not included on the fully funded list to make greater progress toward their college and career plans.

“Students can take individual classes or work toward earning an associate degree or certificate,” she said.&nbsp;“They can even mix and match with&nbsp;scholarship or reduced rate&nbsp;general education courses, career technical&nbsp;courses, and tuition-free Excel in CTE courses to reduce their overall cost.”
