The Barton County Historical Society welcomes Marla Matkin to the Ray Schulz Memorial Library on Monday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. Marla is native Kansan descended from homesteaders, a former teacher, and utilizes her love of history and theater to entertain and inform audiences about the women of the Santa Fe Trail. She has made multiple appearances at Fort Larned Historical Site and has authored two children’s books, “Custer’s Mouse” and “A Dragon’s Tale.”

Admission is free for members of the society and $5 for individuals over 16 wishing to attend the program. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 7 p.m. Light refreshments are provided. 

The Barton County Historical Society is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday all year and has summer hours in April, from 1-4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

Doonans will celebrate its 50th Anniversary with an open house on Wednesday, Oct. 18.&nbsp;The open house includes tours of the facility from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. At 11 a.m., the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon cutting to commemorate the occasion.

Doonan Trailer Corporation was incorporated on Oct. 17, 1973, by Wendell Doonan. Mr. Doonan started out building grain trailers for local farmers in an outdated service station in downtown Great Bend. 

"These doubles [hopper bottom grain trailers] can still be spotted in the fields throughout central Kansas," stated Kelly Zecha, National Dealer Manager, Doonan Specialized Trailer.

Over the years, Doonan Trailer Corporation produced numerous configurations of grain trailers, but it was not until the early 1990s that the company found its true calling. On Aug. 3, 1993, the company completed production of its first 48' x 102' all-steel tandem drop deck trailer (unit #8001) which was sold to Southwest Peterbilt. Southwest Peterbilt had five dealership locations throughout Arizona and New Mexico and eventually became a part of Rush Enterprises, Inc. in 1999. 

"We are happy to have played a small part in Doonan's history," said Gary Willis, Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Rush Entrprises, Inc.

Since then, Doonan Specialized Trailer, LLC has developed a market niche in the specialty segments of the flatbed, drop deck, and lowbed trailer industries by providing highly customized products to satisfy the consumer's ever-changing needs. 

"We wish Mr. Doonan was still here to celebrate these two milestone anniversaries, but I am certain he would be proud of what his legacy has become," saidMike Ruddle, Vice President of Operations, Doonan Specialized Trailer.

To mark the accomplishment, the Company will be installing honorary mud flaps on all new trailers produced for the next year starting Oct. 18.

for our area this week or really for the state.&nbsp;
Southwest Kansas is still overall in the best shape for the state
followed by Northwest Kansas.&nbsp; The six to
ten-day outlook (October 18 to 22) indicates a 40 to 50% of leaning to above normal
temperatures and near normal precipitation (not much).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Normal precipitation good for harvesting
crops and you may have noticed a lot of milo along with corn and soybeans
coming off.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day
outlook (October 20 to 26) indicates normal temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance
of below normal for precipitation.&nbsp; Definitely
not what we want for wheat planting and establishment.&nbsp; And it looks like a killing frost isn’t
close.

We take for granted the crops we
grow here: wheat, corn, soybeans, grain sorghum, alfalfa, sunflowers, and a few
others.&nbsp; Have you ever stopped to think
that outside of some native grasses, nothing we grow here is truly native?&nbsp; The closest we can come is with soybeans and
sunflowers.&nbsp; And when European settlers
arrived indigenous peoples were growing corn, it had already taken a long
journey.&nbsp; This week, where do are major crop

– Modern wheat originated the Fertile Crescent, today’s Middle East along with
countries like Iraq and Turkey and cultivation likely goes back over 12,000

the Volga German Mennonites coming over from what was then Russia with Turkey
Red wheat that is today’s hard red winter wheat.&nbsp; Remember there are many types of wheat
besides what we typically grow.

In observance of two special events, cosmetologists and massage therapists were recognized recently at Renue Salon, Spa &amp; Fashion Boutique, 1419 Main.

October is Cosmetology Month and the last week of the month honors message therapists.

“We want to recognize our cosmetologists because they do so much more than style hair,” said Susan Williams, Renue salon and retail coordinator. “They also provide manicures, pedicures, facials, and eyelash and eyebrow treatments.

“But just as important, your cosmetologist oftentimes becomes your friend – someone who will listen to you. Many clients enjoy this interaction and consider a trip to the salon a social event. They often leave here feeling rejuvenated.”

Williams also noted that each Renue cosmetologist works in a private booth, which is more conducive to privacy and personal interactions.

Massage therapists also deserve special recognition, Williams commented. The Renue team offers a variety of treatments, depending on what their clients prefer.

“A professional massage is more than an occasional luxury,” Williams noted. “It can help relieve the stress of daily life, while being a vital part of your overall health and well-being. There is simply nothing like a good massage.

“And, like cosmetologists, massage therapists will listen if you want to talk. But they also understand if you just want a little peace and quiet.”

Renue’s recent expansion Renue has added specialists in recent months to offer clients more options. It now offers specialized nail treatments, including acrylic and gel, along with eyelash and eyebrow services.

“These additions are a direct result of clients’ requests,” Williams said. “They approached us, we listened and then found the right people to accommodate their wishes.”

Williams said Renue would continue to enhance existing services, while keeping an eye out for new offerings.

“Our salon and spa want to offer the most extensive line of products and services possible,” she commented. “In addition to the varied personal-care services, we have an extensive line of products for hair and skin care.

“All of this is important to us because we want our clients to get what they need right here at home and not have to travel to another town. Keeping business local is extremely important to us.”

Williams also noted that Renue’s boutique offers “wonderful, stylish clothing and accessories. There is a little something for everyone here.”

Renue, 1419 Main, offers all hair-care treatments; face creams; lotions; facials, waxing and other skin-care treatments; manicures and pedicures; nail polishes; body wraps; hot-stone and deep-tissue massages; infrared sauna; and event room.

The boutique offers clothing for women of all ages.

Many clients enjoy this interaction and consider a trip to the salon a social event. They often leave here feeling rejuvenated.”Williams also noted that each Renue cosmetologist works in a private booth, which is more conducive to privacy and personal interactions.Massage therapists also deserve special recognition, Williams commented. The Renue team offers a variety of treatments, depending on what their clients prefer.“A professional massage is more than an occasional luxury,” Williams noted. “It can help relieve the stress of daily life, while being a vital part of your overall health and well-being. There is simply nothing like a good massage.“And, like cosmetologists, massage therapists will listen if you want to talk. It now offers specialized nail treatments, including acrylic and gel, along with eyelash and eyebrow services.“These additions are a direct result of clients’ requests,” Williams said. “They approached us, we listened and then found the right people to accommodate their wishes.”Williams said Renue would continue to enhance existing services, while keeping an eye out for new offerings.“Our salon and spa want to offer the most extensive line of products and services possible,” she commented. “In addition to the varied personal-care services, we have an extensive line of products for hair and skin care.“All of this is important to us because we want our clients to get what they need right here at home and not have to travel to another town. The Barton Community College Instrumental Music Department will present a pair of exchange concerts with Sterling College at 3 p.m. Oct. 29 at Sterling College, and at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Admission is free for both concerts.

The experience will feature the Prairie Winds Concert Band, directed by Jamie Minneman, and the Sterling College Band, directed by Larry Brownlee. The Sterling College Jazz Band will also perform. The Barton Jazz Band will also perform at the Barton Concert.

“I am so excited for all of these students to get to experience the “Music of the Masters,” she said. “Larry and I will each be conducting three pieces by the greatest wind band composers of all time, including Holst, Vaughan-Williams, Sousa, and others. These are the classics of our genre, and it’s important that our students are exposed to this music.”

Barton Music to play combined instrumental concerts with Sterling College

The dream is getting bigger for Ethan Thomas. Early last year, Thomas began gauging interest in a travel basketball league for area elementary schools. By December, that had turned into a series of five games to be played between Holy Family and Central Kansas Christian Academy (CKCA) in Great Bend. Season two is now underway, and Thomas said the league is growing.

"Me and my wife, Ashlie, have been working almost tirelessly for the last year and a half to get an elementary basketball league going," Ethan said. "We are excited to say we have started the Central Kansas Christian Basketball League. This year we are excited to have four teams."

The CKCA Warriors and Holy Family Shooting Stars will be joined by the Stafford Trojans and Chase Kats. This year's schedule will include seven or eight games with the format staying the same: third and fourth graders will make up a school's "B" team, and fifth and sixth graders will make up the "A" team. Each school will have its own representative that helps find coaches and officials. High school athletes will be paired with experienced officials to boost interest in officiating for the next generation.

The league will not track student grades and therefore is not under the umbrella of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, but Ethan said the goal is to mirror KSHSAA rules as closely as possible.

"We're still going to follow basically what KSHSAA is doing so the kids learn what they need to learn by the time they go to middle school and they're already ready to play," he said. "Another exciting thing was, because of the rule change with homeschooling, we're allowing that as well."

Three homeschooled students have already joined the CKCA team. Practice is underway and the first game is scheduled between CKCA and Holy Family on Monday, Oct. 23. CKCA will play in its gym, Holy Family will play at St. Rose, and Chase will play at Chase High School. Stafford will play its games in Great Bend. The season will wind down with a tournament on Dec. 9-10 at CKCA.

The Thomases approached several area businesses with sponsorship packages ranging from $300 to $1,000. Twenty businesses have signed up so far with those funds paying for officials, trophies and medals, and banners to be hung in participating schools. 

Ethan said the league may continue to grow. He is already in communication with two more potential schools. To help promote the league, the Thomases have created a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ckcbleague">Facebook page</a> and webstore for the league. Barton Community College to host Chamber After Hours event at Camp Aldrich

The flurry of fall fieldwork season makes October a fitting month to recognize the cooperatives that help supply Kansas wheat producers with grain storage, marketing, field recommendations, inputs and patronage. Cooperatives have existed nearly as long as farmers have been farming as producers learned how to pool resources and expertise to support each other’s operations. National Co-op Month is a nationwide event that raises awareness of how cooperatives provide a tried-and-true way to do business and support resilient communities.&nbsp;

And while rural Kansans are familiar with the prairie skyscrapers that dot the horizon — iconic grain elevators with the town name often painted in bold, block letters — cooperatives are more than just a place to deliver and store grain. Today, these member-driven businesses can also provide credit, insurance, electric service, health care, housing, telephone services and even childcare. Cooperatives also help support more than row-crop agriculture, representing industries from grape juice to electricity.&nbsp;

“In Kansas, agricultural cooperatives are very grain marketing-based, but outside of Kansas that is not the case,” said Brandi Miller, president/CEO of the Kansas Cooperative Council, the organization that has represented the cooperative business model in the Sunflower State since 1944. “There are a lot of cooperatives focused on consumer products. People see their products on the shelves and don’t realize they function exactly like the co-op they see in their hometown.”

According to the Kansas Cooperative Council, Kansas is home to more than 575 co-op locations with more than 116,000 members and 5,000 employees. Those businesses support the health of local economies by creating jobs, paying property taxes and income taxes and giving to charity.&nbsp;

The weather-driven challenges of the past few growing seasons have made this payback difficult for cooperatives, just as it has been difficult for their farmer members. But, Miller reminds farmers that just as they are resolved to adapt in challenging times, so are the cooperatives of which they are members. Kansas cooperatives are working to explore options to do things differently or more efficiently to help provide better services to their members, investments that take time and money to implement, but match the innovation that takes place on Kansas farms.&nbsp;

To support awareness of how cooperatives function, the Kansas Cooperative Council developed a series of “Co-ops 101 Videos” for educational uses from employee or new board director onboarding to sharing about what cooperatives do with high school students or interns. The videos were developed through a grant with CHS, Inc. and in collaboration with Brian Briggeman, director of the Arthur Capper Cooperative Center in K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics. They cover a variety of introductory topics, including the definition and function of a cooperative, the seven cooperative principles, patronage, allocated equity retirement, co-op governance, qualified versus non-qualified patronage distributions and how patronage distributions are determined.&nbsp;

Miller hopes the video series and other efforts during National Co-op Month encourage both farmers and others to learn more about the cooperatives in their communities. She also encourages all to explore how they can help make decisions and set a strategic path forward by serving on that cooperative’s board.&nbsp;

“I always encourage people to consider getting involved in their local cooperative,” Miller said. “Every co-op is looking for good people who want to see their communities flourish and utilize the cooperative to provide community resources. Check it out; it’s an important function in our rural communities.”&nbsp;

Wheat Scoop: Learn more about co-ops in your community

The United Way of Central Kansas is proud to announce the upcoming Reality U™ program on October 18th in Great Bend, KS, sponsored by Credit Union of America-Great Bend, Buckle, City of Great Bend, Farmers Bank and Trust, First Kansas Bank, Marmie Auto Group, MPIRE Realty Group, Spectrum CPA Partners, LLC, University of Kansas Health System-Great Bend, Equity Bank, and Nex-Tech Wireless. This interactive event is designed to provide students with valuable financial literacy skills while emphasizing the critical link between education and financial success.

Reality U™ is an innovative program that aims to teach teenagers that their academic performance today can significantly impact their financial future. By engaging students in a 75-minute interactive and engaging personal finance simulation, Reality U™ provides them with the opportunity to learn and practice personal finance skills in a real-world context.

The event allows students to imagine themselves as 26-year-olds and complete an online lifestyle survey which also asks about their current GPA, school attendance and participation to create a unique and individualized future scenario for each student. Each scenario includes the student's monthly income, credit card debt, student loan information, as well as marital and family status.

During the simulation, students are given a checkbook register to track their monthly purchases from 12 booths representing services and products that adults typically must consider or purchase each month. The simulation challenges students to make financial decisions and sometimes requires them to return a "purchase" and make a different choice. The goal is to ensure that their checkbook register doesn't fall below zero.

In addition to the Reality U simulation, United Way of Central Kansas partners with local community members and businesses to offer a number of breakout sessions to round out the day. These sessions will offer students the opportunity to dive deeper into important topics, further enhancing their financial literacy and personal development.

Reality After High School, Presenter Davis Jimenez will guide students through the realities they can expect after high school, offering valuable insights into the transition to adulthood and how financial decisions play a crucial role in their future.

Cost of Delinquency, Presenter Casey Rowland with Barton County Juvenile Services along with GBPD officers will shed light on the real costs of delinquency, helping students understand the legal and financial consequences of certain actions and how they can make responsible choices.

Preparing for High School, Presenter GBHS Guidance Counselors will provide students with essential information and tips on how to prepare for high school and what they can expect in the upcoming year.

Interviewing, Presenter JAG-KS Leadership will equip students with valuable interviewing skills.

Youth Crew, Presenter Barton County Juvenile Services Tyler Morton will introduce students to the concept of the Youth Crew and how they can get involved in community service and leadership opportunities.

Stress &amp; Anxiety Management, Presenter The Center for Counseling-Shanna Long will share strategies for stress and anxiety management, focusing on mental health and well-being, an important aspect of personal development.

These breakout sessions are designed to complement the main Reality U™ program, providing students with a well-rounded educational experience that goes beyond financial literacy. They offer students a chance to engage with knowledgeable presenters who will empower them with skills and knowledge to succeed in various aspects of life.

By engaging students in a 75-minute interactive and engaging personal finance simulation, Reality U™ provides them with the opportunity to learn and practice personal finance skills in a real-world context.The event allows students to imagine themselves as 26-year-olds and complete an online lifestyle survey which also asks about their current GPA, school attendance and participation to create a unique and individualized future scenario for each student. Each scenario includes the student's monthly income, credit card debt, student loan information, as well as marital and family status.During the simulation, students are given a checkbook register to track their monthly purchases from 12 booths representing services and products that adults typically must consider or purchase each month. The simulation challenges students to make financial decisions and sometimes requires them to return a "purchase" and make a different choice. The goal is to ensure that their checkbook register doesn't fall below zero.In addition to the Reality U simulation, United Way of Central Kansas partners with local community members and businesses to offer a number of breakout sessions to round out the day. United Way bringing Reality U back to Great Bend students

Shelly Pavlu’s background in rural healthcare was the forerunner to her new position at Heart of Kansas Family Health Care in Larned where she cares for patients as a nurse practitioner.

Pavlu recently started seeing patients of all ages in her family-medicine practice at 522 Broadway.

“When I was first introduced to Heart of Kansas, I noticed right away that several staff members have been here for quite some time,” Pavlu said. “Longevity of service is something that I value.

“In addition, the Heart of Kansas mission is in sync with my personal goals. I always tell my patients that I am their partner in making a plan to empower them to seek their own personal health goals. Heart of Kansas gives me the opportunity to do this by offering the full range of nurse-practitioner services, along with recommendations about preventive healthcare.”

Pavlu also noted that she is impressed with the Heart of Kansas behavioral-health services, which include counseling and medication treatment.

“Another plus is that everyone I have met here has been welcoming,” Pavlu commented. “Since I am not originally from this area of Kansas, they have been gracious enough to acquaint me with the local area and its residents.”

Pavlu graduated from Santa Fe Trail High School at Carbondale. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1999 at Fort Hays State University where she also earned a doctor of nursing practice in 2021.

Prior to her college days, Pavlu was a certified nurse’s aide and certified medication aide. She also became an EMT and volunteers for the local Emergency Medical Services.

“Throughout my nursing career, I worked mainly in rural healthcare as a floor nurse but was in public health for a decade,” Pavlu said. “I have truly worked in all aspects of nursing.”

She was previously employed by The University of Kansas Health System St. Rose Campus as a provider in family medicine and Convenient Care.

Pavlu grew up in Hanover and later lived in Overbrook; she currently lives in Ness City. Her family includes three children – Audrey, Kaleb and Jaiden, who is married to Chance.

Brett Middleton, Heart of Kansas chief executive officer, said Larned clinic patients are “very fortunate to have Shelly as their provider. Her experience spans a lifetime of treating and caring for her patients. Shelly is another example of how Heart of Kansas strives to bring professional, compassionate providers to our team.”

Heart of Kansas Family Health Care is a Federally Qualified Health Center, which allows it to be a safety net for patients who are uninsured or underinsured. Its professional providers also welcome those with insurance at the Great Bend, Larned and Stafford locations. Heart of Kansas is open to everyone.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory update due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. The state of Kansas recognizes three advisory levels:&nbsp;

A&nbsp;Hazard status&nbsp;indicates that a harmful algal bloom is present, and extreme conditions exist. &nbsp;

A&nbsp;Warning status&nbsp;indicates that conditions are unsafe for human and pet exposure. Contact with the waterbody should be avoided.&nbsp;

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:&nbsp;

Advisories are&nbsp;Lifted&nbsp;when cell densities and toxin concentrations dissipate to levels&nbsp;below&nbsp;the Watch thresholds.

KDHE investigates publicly accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions. &nbsp;

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.&nbsp;

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee recently gathered to celebrate the successful completion of two stunning projects that have further enhanced the city's appeal and charm. These projects, the 10th &amp; Washington Project and the Courthouse Lily Garden Project, reflect the dedication and vision of the committee members who have worked tirelessly to beautify our community.

The collaborative effort spearheaded by the Beautification Committee, the 10th &amp; Washington Project, has metamorphosed a previously ordinary corner of our city into a charming oasis. Furthermore, complemented by the eye-catching "Welcome to Great Bend" mural, organized by the Barton Arts Movement, these two projects have collectively revitalized the 10th &amp; Washington corner. Northview Nursery, a local landscaping company, played a pivotal role by constructing a brick retaining wall surrounding a small garden. This garden has been adorned with an array of succulents, adding a touch of nature's beauty to the busy highway. A particularly heartwarming touch to this project was the generous donation of a decorative birdhouse by Denis Kephart in memory of his beloved late wife. This thoughtful addition adds a special element of nostalgia and warmth to the garden.

In addition to the 10th &amp; Washington Project, the Beautification Committee also added to an already existing project located on the north end of Jack Kilby Square. The Courthouse Lily Garden Project, a captivating addition to our city's iconic courthouse, showcases a striking metal sculpture called "Cattails," crafted by local metal artist Mark Rondeau. The sculpture not only adds an artistic dimension to the courthouse grounds but also pays homage to our local talent.

These two projects exemplify the Beautification Committee's dedication to enhancing our city's visual appeal and creating spaces that foster a sense of community pride. We invite everyone to visit these newly transformed areas, enjoy their beauty, and celebrate the hard work and passion of the Beautification Committee.

In less than a decade, there has been a shift in land ownership trends in Kansas.

“There is a growing demographic of landowners in Kansas that are becoming more geographically and generationally removed from agriculture,” said Robin Reid, an agricultural economist at Kansas State University.

Reid cites data from 2015 indicating that 85% of Kansas land was owned by people living in the state. Research is ongoing, she says, but in 2022, data suggests a notable shift in land being owned by people who live outside the state’s borders.

“Some of that is due to inheritance and some of that is due to people purchasing land – especially hunting ground,” Reid said. “But we also know the No. 1 question in our county extension offices across the state is from landowners wanting to know the going rates for land leases and information on Kansas lease law.” Reid said K-State is hosting the first-ever Kansas Landowner Conference on Nov. 10 to address challenges related to land ownership in Kansas. She notes that in addition to helping landowners build networks and learn about land management, the program includes information on:

Ashlee Westerhold, director of the Office of Farm and Ranch Transition in K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics, will also be presenting during the conference. She said that 2 in 3 – 66% -- Kansas farms are owned and operated by someone age 55 or older.

We’re going to see a huge wave of ownership transfer from one generation to the next.”In her current role, Westerhold said she works with many families who are inheriting farmland while living in Kansas City, Wichita or other large cities.“They do not necessarily have plans to come back to the farm, but they want to keep ownership,” she said. “And it’s important to have conversations about transition and succession even though these children might not live on the farm someday.
