Fundraising continues for Barton Community College to match a one-to-one
grant totaling $1.8 million to construct an agriculture, farm machinery and
transportation technology complex. At Tuesday’s Barton Board of Trustees meeting, Foundation Executive Director Lindsey Bogner said the college has
raised $825,000 for their portion of the matching grant from the Kansas
Department of Commerce.


Construction delays have pushed completion goals of the $3.6 million facility
back to tentatively early February. 

"We'll have a series of socials in the current Case New Holland shop," said Bogner. "We'll be inviting members of the public that are attached to ag in some way. We want to talk to them, give them a tour and continue donor conversations."

The Trustees approved the naming of the facility as the Glenn and Elaine Mull
Agriculture Center, thanks to a donation. Also approved was the naming of the
Merlin and Nelva Grimes Memorial Corrals, for outdoor corrals benefiting the animal
science program.


"We're really excited about this," said Bogner. "The Glenn and Elaine Mull naming is the entire wing, which is a great opportunity to recognize that family. They have been a wonderful supporter for a long time, as has the Grimes family."

The 14,000-square-foot facility will house a Top Tech Program to provide
training to become Case New Holland technicians. The building will also have
space for the CDL program, crop protection and animal science programs.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Barton CC announces naming of newest college building

Great Bend Public Lands Director Scott Keeler gave his staff a shout out
at last week’s Great Bend City Council meeting, commending their efforts on
decorating the city with Christmas lights and displays. 

Keeler noted staff worked
hard to make more of the displays animated to improve the experience of those that
drive through the Trail of Lights.

Along with
Dolly Trolley rides taking off from Perks Coffee during the evenings, there
will be carriage rides offered for $30 starting this Friday, Dec. 15 and Saturday, Dec. 16 at

More ways to experience Great Bend’s Trail of Lights

After the success of "The Wall That Heals" last May in Great Bend, a local Vietnam veterans group created a plan to place a permanent memorial at Veterans Memorial Park.

The cost of the project is being covered through grants, current donations and about a third of the money left to be solicited through fundraising.

The 50' memorial is symbolic of "The Wall That Heals" with a 3D stainless-steel Huey UH-1 helicopter hovering over the wall. The feature will have the U.S. Military branch logos, the Vietnam Service Medal and the iconic elephant grass.

B&amp;B Metal Arts, creator of other stainless-steel memorials in Great Bend, will create the $92,348 project.

The City of Great Bend would be responsible for powering the lights to the memorial and taking care of the irrigation system. The memorial group plans to pour concrete in the summer of 2024 and have a dedication of the finished product on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2024.

The Great Bend City Council will consider approving the placement of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Veterans Park at their next meeting on Monday, Dec. 18. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Barton Community College’s Center for Adult Education will soon begin another nine-week session of classes. However, orientation days are required before starting the classes. Students must attend all orientation days in-person, which will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Jan. 8-11. The Center for Adult Education is located at 1025 Main Street in Great Bend.

The first day of class will start on Jan. 16 or 17, and attendance is required to complete the orientation process. Students can choose from classes that meet on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays or Thursdays, but cannot mix and match between those two options.&nbsp; There are three class times to choose from on Tuesdays and Thursdays or two class times to choose from on Mondays and Wednesdays. Classes will be held from 8-11 a.m. or 1-4 or 6-9 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday or 8-11 or 1-4 p.m on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Students will complete the required testing, learn how to navigate their GED.com account and learn about WorkReady! Students will also meet one-on-one with their instructor to discuss goals, expectations, attendance requirements and workload.

Those interested in taking the GED exam without any preparation instruction can do so right away but are urged to receive advising before moving forward.

Minors must bring a parent or legal guardian to enroll. A completed Compulsory Attendance Waiver is required for any student 16 or 17 years of age and will be provided by the Center for Adult Education at the time of sign-up.

Barton CC to host adult education classes in Great Bend

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is not going away. The United States Department of Agriculture reports more than 72.5 million chickens, turkeys, and other birds have been killed since the outbreak began in 2022. On Tuesday, Cal-Maine Foods near Chase reported it had temporarily ceased production after positive HPAI tests. The company has reported the virus has impacted nearly 700,000 laying hens, or nearly two percent of its total flock. Alicia Boor, agriculture and natural resources agent in the Cottonwood District for K-State Research, reminds poultry providers to be cautious.

"Poultry farmers need to be very careful -  if you can, have your birds indoors because it is transferred from the wild birds that are migrating through," she said. "If you can have them indoors - indoor water sources, indoor feed - so they have a lesser chance. That's the best thing you can do for those animals is to completely isolate them."

The Kansas Department of Agriculture indicated the first positive test in Barton County on Dec. 8, of a non-poultry bird, though no test date was indicated. Boor said for those unable to move birds indoors, disinfecting food and water treys routinely can help mitigate the spread of the virus. Flock owners should watch for symptoms and report any incidences to their local veterinarian so it can be turned over to state authorities. The virus will likely be around for a while.

"Usually, when the birds finish their migration through the area it will calm down again until they start coming back to the north in the spring," Boor said. "It's being transferred more readily because we have so many migrating birds."

Officials believe there is little risk the virus will be contracted by humans. Symptoms among birds include coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, decreased egg production, and soft-shelled or misshapen eggs.

The future Little Panthers Preschool and education center along the 281 Bypass in Great Bend may look quiet on the outside. Inside is a hub of activity as construction crews continue to make progress on both sides of the facility. Workers from McCownGordon Construction were not too busy to take some out to visit some Little Panthers at their current building on 21st Street. Preschool Teacher Morgan Little said her students learn best with hands-on learning experiences, and McCownGordon were just the people to help during the preschool's weekly theme of construction.

"I thought this would be a great opportunity to learn about construction and get them excited about their new building," she said. "That's going to be a big transition. Right now, we're in a church and we're moving to this big, amazing building."

Little reached out to USD 428 Assistant Superintendent John Popp, who contacted Heather Gigax, senior project engineer with McCownGordon. She brought in some workers to show the preschoolers the many aspects of construction work.

"They were amazing," Little said. "They had a slide show ready for the kids that quizzed them on different tools and equipment they used. They showed pictures of actual tools they had. They did demonstrations with hammers and screwdrivers. They had a drone fly through the new building and give the kids a look of what it looks like right now. That was really cool."

The workers brought blocks and Barbies and stuck around after the presentation to further engage with the students. Best of all, McCownGordon handed out mini tape measures the students were able to take home.

"(The kids) could probably tell you what length everything in my classroom is at this point," said Little. "They learned so much from that presentation. They wanted to keep being engaged and measured everything in our room.

"We just want to give them a big thanks. I know talking to little kids can be scary sometimes. They were awesome and went way above and beyond with everything they did."

The USD 428 Education Foundation recently announced its capital campaign to help raise money to equip the new facility that will serve up to 288 three and four-year-old students. The new Little Panthers Preschool is expected to open next August.

In the spirit of giving back to the community, the Great Bend Chamber of
Commerce announced a special holiday food drive at this week’s Chamber coffee. Business individuals meet once a week on Thursdays at a local business to learn
more about that business and get updated on events occurring throughout the
community. 

Chamber CEO Megan Barfield said there was a thought to incorporate a food
drive into one of their weekly coffee events before Christmas.


"We kicked off the initiative for our end-of-the year celebration where we asked people that were coming to bring a non-perishable food item," said Barfield. "As that developed, we had a Chamber coffee on the books for this Thursday. We thought, why not extend that food drive initiative to the rest of the business community."&nbsp;

The event will take place at the Chamber office, 1125 Williams, on Thursday, Dec. 14 from 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. Attendees can bring non-perishable food items that will
be distributed to local food banks.


"Our executive committee is meeting again on December 20," said Barfield. "We'll see how much we have. I'm reaching out to some of the food banks to get their current state. Is someone overflowing and they're great? We'll go on to the next one. We're doing some research there."

Along with Thursday's event, donations will be accepted until Dec. 20 by bringing the items by 1125 Williams.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Escape to the beach with Family Crisis Center's raffle

A search committee is going through the four semi-finalists to become
the next president at Barton Community College. In September, Dr. Carl Heilman announced his
retirement plans as the president at the end of the 2023-2024 school year. 

The committee
has conducted online Zoom calls with the four candidates this week, and Barton
Board of Trustees Chairman Mike Johnson said two finalists will be announced
next week.


"There were a couple of committee members that weren't able to attend some of the meetings, but with technology we're able to record those Zooms," said Johnson. "Those individuals that could not attend will be able to view those meetings. Look forward to announcements next week."

The two finalists will visit campus for in-person meetings,
including those open to the public in mid-January.


"We'll have them on campus in January for meetings with the committee, the board, groups on campus and community stakeholders," said Johnson. "We'll set specific days. We'll have their spouses and families invited as well."

The Trustees plan to announce Barton’s incoming president at a special meeting
on Jan. 30. Heilman has served as Barton’s president since July
2006.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Clara Barton documentary on Alzheimer's & dementia care

With a long line stretching outside the City Auditorium waiting for the
event to start, hundreds of children enjoyed the 27th annual Santa’s
Workshop hosted by the Great Bend Recreation Commission last week. 

More than
850 necklaces were handed out, 500 items from the fish pond were given to children
and 650 cookies were distributed. Designed for children from preschool to sixth
grade, the holiday-themed booths were highlighted by a chance to visit Santa
Claus. 

Great Bend Rec Program Director Megan Hammeke said entertainment from
Happy Faces Entertainment was a big hit.


"They brought Olaf the snowman," said Hammeke. "People loved him. I enjoyed watching Olaf interact. Kids that were scared, Olaf was dancing around them. There was an elf with Olaf that was doing magic tricks. That worked really well for the Santa line that gets really long. He made sure to be in that Santa line and interact with everyone."

During the two-hour event, 291 letters to Santa were dropped off in Santa’s
mailbox. Many organizations assisted with the program, and 64 local high school
students volunteered with booths or cleanup the night of the event.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Hundreds of children experience Santa’s Workshop in Great Bend

As most Kansans know, whole wheat products provide a great amount of nutrients such as fiber, B vitamins, folate, and more. It is used worldwide in many recipes, and if you pay attention to food labels, you are aware that gluten, a protein found in wheat, is in products you might not expect. In fact, those with gluten sensitivity have to exclude many foods that contain the protein because their body mounts an immune response that attacks the small intestine.

Those with gluten intolerance can experience increased inflammation throughout the body, fatigue, chronic digestive issues, and headaches.

However, breakthrough research from Kansas State University has found a method to develop wheat-based foods that contain lower amounts of gluten. This discovery may lessen the adverse effects for those with celiac or other autoimmune diseases.

Eduard Akhunov, University Distinguished Professor in K-State’s Department of Plant Pathology and director of the Wheat Genetics Resource Center states that gluten likely will never be completely removed from wheat since it is important for bread-making. Gluten provides the texture, flavor and moisture in such products as bread, bagels, and noodles. Even though reduced levels of gluten achieved in this study won’t make wheat immediately safe for those with severe levels of celiac disease, Akhunov says, “It is important to step forward.”

The nature of wheat breeding research means varieties with reduced gluten content may not be available to consumers for many years, but this study will broaden the options available for those with minor gluten sensitivity, and with further research, it could pave the road for developing new varieties that will be safer for people with celiac disease.

Aaron Harries, the vice president of research and operations for Kansas Wheat, made a good point when he said, “There are many wheat farmers and members of their families in Kansas

that have celiac disease. It is ironic and unfortunate that they raise wheat for a living but can’t eat wheat foods. Most consumers would prefer not to give up wheat foods in their diet. Developing wheat varieties that are consumable by people with celiac disease would make their lives much easier.”

WINKEL: Safer wheat products on the rise - Gluten reduction

Barton County officials are pondering the best way to move forward with an error on tax statements that were recently mailed to residents throughout the county. Shortly after the county notified the public via social media that statements would go out on Dec. 8, Clerk Bev Schmeidler issued a press release stating a clerical error in her office resulted in an error. Treasurer Jim Jordan said during Tuesday's commission meeting that the error is causing headaches in his office.

"Every year, my elections are December," he said. "The month before we get the statements out, the month of, and the month after. We have other things we need to address with this that's coming through my office. We don't have the manpower, nor the time, to deal with all of this."

Numbers for a utility company with a pipeline that affects eight taxing units in the county were not certified until September. Schmeidler said, through a clerical error, the numbers were not calculated in a portion of the 2023 tax levies. Once the taxes were rolled over to collections, the mistake was virtually impossible to correct as it would have undone months of work in several departments. Commissioner Tricia Schlessiger tried to pin down which residents were impacted.

"This is very confusing to the average taxpayer who is going to look at their statement," she said. "Now, they don't know if it's correct or incorrect. Is there a way to pull a report or put something out there? Or how do we address this?"

Two taxing units in Beaver and Cheyenne Townships, as well as Fairview, Independent, Union, and Wheatland Townships will be impacted the most. The error is relatively small numerically: a property valued at $250,000 in those townships would be over-taxed by approximately $8. Statements around the rest of the county may also be impacted in less significant amounts. The discussion turned to how the errors would be addressed, including paying under protest or carrying them over into next year as a tax credit.

"There's no easy solution just to say it's next year," said County Counselor Patrick Hoffman. "At the end of the day, it's really up to the taxpayers if they want to protest or pay under protest, whether it's 50 cents, a dollar, or a big amount. It's up to the taxpayers. They have the right to file that way."

Appraiser Wendy Prosser said filing a protest may cost taxpayers significantly more than they are due back, and the protest process could take several months to process. Commission Chair Shawn Hutchinson said teamwork will be required to come up with a solution.

"I guess this is one time we're blessed to have a past appraiser and a past county clerk on the board with us who have a lot of experience and can maybe help us get through this," he said. "I think the main thing is being completely transparent with the taxpayers. For me, I was sitting here biting my tongue waiting to make sure that's what happened this morning. I'm thankful it did."

The issue may have ramifications for future tax cycles. "The other thing that now presents a problem is we can't roll the tax year next year until everything is in, which in turn, is going to put the tax statements later," Jordan said. "Usually, I get all my stuff together and Bev has the levies in, they're good, and I send them out right away. Now, we can't roll until she has them in and they're all corrected."

The Great Bend Reads Initiative, GB Reads for short, is scheduled to launch on Jan. 8, 2024. This year's book, "The Wild Robot," by Peter Brown, is the story of an industrial robot who finds itself stranded in the wildness. One highlight of GB Reads next year will be a scavenger hunt where families and students can find robots in the local wilderness. USD 428 Director of Public Information Andrea Bauer reached out to teachers at Great Bend High School for help. Travis Straub's woodworking class cut some pieces, and Jake Hofflinger said his manufacturing class helped assemble the robots.

"The project she was wanting to do involved robots, and they had some two-dimensional cardboard flat robot pictures," he said. "She was thinking, could you guys make something three-dimensional that's cooler than this? It didn't really take much for us to do it."

Hofflinger said more than a dozen of his students worked on the project in their spare time, and Straub's woodworking class also helped. They were able to clean some drawers of spare wood pieces, plastic bits, and nuts and bolts. It was a fun way to apply some of the skills learned in class.

"Most of the stuff we do is technical," Hofflinger said. "It has to be done a certain way. Our laser engraver is accurate to 0.003 of an inch. Most of the stuff we do is parts that have to fit together perfectly or match. This was easy for them, but it was no pressure, creative."

The manufacturing class is mostly juniors at seniors at GBHS. Senior Corbyn Causey had the all-important job of engraving the robot faces. "I tried to make happy-looking robots for the kids," he said. "I hope they make the kids smile."

The class made 15 robots for the scavenger hunt. USD 428 will hand out more than 1,300 copies of "The Wild Robot" for the GB Reads initiative.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA–APHIS), has identified highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in two egg layer facilities — one in Rice County and one in McPherson County, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Agriculture.

 This marks five cases of HPAI in Kansas this fall; since the start of the outbreak in 2022 there have been 21 cases of HPAI in Kansas.

KDA is working closely with USDA–APHIS on a joint incident response at the affected premises in the two affected counties. According to KDA’s animal health officials, the facilities both increased their biosecurity upon the initial HPAI outbreak in 2022 and have been continuously monitoring their flock. Upon noticing clinical signs of HPAI in their birds, they immediately contacted KDA. The affected premises were placed under quarantine and the birds will be humanely depopulated and disposed of in an approved manner to prevent the spread of the disease.

In addition, KDA will be establishing a 20-km surveillance zone around the infected premises, and other farms or properties with poultry that fall within that zone will not be allowed to move birds or poultry products on or off their property without permission from KDA. The animal health team is working to locate all poultry owners in the area to ensure they know the symptoms of HPAI and are taking critical steps to protect their birds.
