The holidays can be extra busy for first responders. Great Bend Police Department officers made a pair of arrests on Thanksgiving.

At approximately 5:42 p.m., officers with the Great Bend Police Department were dispatched to the 400 block of Evergreen in reference to shots fired.&nbsp; Upon arrival, Officers contacted the victim, who advised he had been involved in an argument with the mother of his child, and that during the argument, the suspect, Melissa Sanders, 39, produced a handgun and fired in the direction of the victim. The victim left the scene and contacted the police department.&nbsp; 

Officers were able to locate Sanders driving east of Great Bend and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The officers were able to locate the firearm used in the incident inside of the vehicle. Sanders was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Barton County jail for Aggravated Assault in lieu of bail.

At approximately 10:19 p.m. last Thursday, an Officer from the Great Bend Police Department contacted Laveta Elam, 41, in the 200 block of Main St. in Great Bend. Barton County Communications confirmed Elam to have an outstanding warrant for failure to appear. While being taken into custody, Elam refused to comply with the officer's directives, and actively resisted arrest. 

Elam was arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail. While at the Barton County Jail, narcotics were located, hidden on Elam's person. She was charged with Resisting Arrest, Trafficking Contraband into a Correctional Facility, and the Failure to Appear warrant and booked into the Barton County Jail in lieu of bond.

At least it waited until the busiest travel week of the year was over. Just barely. Winter weather crept into the state over the weekend, but the first major snow accumulations across Kansas are expected on Monday, especially in the northeast part of the state.

Central Kansas is unlikely to escape at least a dusting. The National Weather Service in Wichita issued a Winter Weather Advisory for areas that include Barton, Pawnee, Stafford, Ellsworth, Russell, and Rice counties. A 50 percent chance of snow was expected across the region beginning at 4 a.m. Monday morning. Snow becomes more likely before noon, with a high temperature of 27 degrees.&nbsp;

Counties in the southern part of the Eagle Media listening area are expected to be impacted less, with 1-2 inches of snow predicted for Pawnee and Barton counties. Slightly more accumulation of 2-4 inches is predicted for Ellsworth and Russell counties.

The white stuff will likely stick around through Tuesday morning with an overnight low Monday of 17 degrees, and a high Tuesday of 40 degrees.&nbsp;

The National Weather Service reminds drivers:

When driving, if roads are snow covered or icy, slow down and drive carefully. Vehicle stopping distances are increased 2-6 times on snow and ice. Keep extra distance between you and other vehicles. Turn on your headlights while driving in rain or snow.

Allow extra time to get to your destination.

As a motorist, you are far more likely to have an accident when driving during an icy road conditions than an equivalent amount of time driving during rainy or dry weather. If possible, avoid travel during winter storms. If you have the option to telework or work from home, snowy or icy days are good days to do so.

Clean off your vehicle before driving, as flying snow or impaired vision can cause accidents.

Monday closings and delays

As of Tuesday, November 25, the drought monitor report indicates no real change from last week overall with some improvement along the Missouri border. The recent rains leave most of the state in very good shape heading into December. The six-to ten-day outlook (November 30 to December 4) indicates a 60 to 80% chance of likely below normal for temperatures and a 50 to 50% chance of likely above normal for precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (December 2 to 8) indicates a 50 to 60% chance of likely below normal for temperatures and 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation.

Today, as we enjoy Thanksgiving weekend, harvest is about over, wheat is in the ground and crop production agriculture is taking a small break. Now that harvest is in the books, let’s take a brief look at why producers are concerned about the economics they are facing.

· Overall, it was a good year for crop production nationwide. Even with some challenges with diseases and weather in the Corn Belt, we are looking at record or near record yields. Corn production is pegged at over 16 billion bushels. Soybeans at around 4.25 billion bushels, down a bit from last year. Wheat in the US at almost 2 billion bushels for all types of wheat. Yields in Kansas for the crops were significantly better than last year. This is the good news.

· On the other hand, production costs for inputs were still high. With luck and the better yields, some producers are able to cover fixed and variable costs and maybe make a bit of a profit. The other challenge is the value of the crop. Low prices are typical during and right after harvest. They can hold on to the crop and wait for better prices. This works better for on-farm storage. If grain is stored at an elevator, storage costs mount and when elevators need to encourage, they will raise storage costs.

· Overall, demand for the big three crops is decent to good. If China does reenter the soybean market as promised, that will help. Prices may improve or decline as attention is paid to what is happening in South America. Tariff uncertainty also plays a factor in markets. Markets hate uncertainty. Another factors besides these and a large harvest is feeding livestock. Feedyard placements are down. The cattle herd hasn’t been this small in decades. That is a major end use.

· Hopefully, the aid promised by the USDA will be forthcoming. Hopefully, settling some tariff disputes will help with input costs. Things are looking a bit stressful going forward.

Barton Ag Instructor Dr. Vic Martin - The Economics of Agriculture

The anticipation is always a little bit higher in the final week of the month in Eagle
Media’s Make a Difference Contest, presented by OPI &amp; Golden Belt Printing.
Not only is the final weekly winner of the month named, but that student and a
teacher also become eligible for more prizes in the monthly drawing.

Ellinwood’s Henry Moore, a fifth grader at St. Joseph
Catholic School in Ellinwood, was named the final weekly winner in November. Henry
said he can make a difference by being kind to others and mowing the lawn for
his grandma. OPI &amp; Golden Belt Printing presented Henry with a giant $100
check as the weekly winner, and Henry’s teacher, Mrs. Thomas, were entered into
the monthly prize drawing.

Later in the week, that November monthly winner was selected
from the four weekly winners. Great Bend’s Hailey Guzman, a fifth grader at Riley
Elementary, was picked as the November Make a Difference monthly winner. She
received another giant $100 check from OPI &amp; Golden Belt Printing, and her
teacher, Mandy Stansfield, also received $100. Guzman also took home a bookbag
filled with goodies from other Make a Difference sponsors.

Media’s Make a Difference Contest, presented by OPI &amp; Golden Belt Printing.
Not only is the final weekly winner of the month named, but that student and a
teacher also become eligible for more prizes in the monthly drawing.Ellinwood’s Henry Moore, a fifth grader at St. Joseph
Catholic School in Ellinwood, was named the final weekly winner in November. Henry
said he can make a difference by being kind to others and mowing the lawn for
his grandma. OPI &amp; Golden Belt Printing presented Henry with a giant $100
check as the weekly winner, and Henry’s teacher, Mrs. Thomas, were entered into
the monthly prize drawing.<figure>

Stueder Contractors Launches the 'Holiday Heat Up' for local homeowner in need

Today is the big day for Christmas lovers in Great Bend and throughout the Golden Belt. A few snowflakes may even be in the air for the city of Great Bend's Home for the Holidays Festival today and tonight in downtown Great Bend.

The fun begins at 10 a.m. with various activities. The Dilly &amp; Doc Pop-Up Market, 1119 Main, will feature more than 30 vendors with door prizes and special appearances by Mr. and Mrs. Clause. The Great Bend Cookie Contest also begins at 10 a.m. and runs through 4 p.m. For a $5 donation, pick up a voting bracelet and cookie box at 1607 Main Street. Visiting the participating businesses, taste the cookies, and submit votes for the best cookie by 4 p.m. Across town, the Christmas Craft Mall featuring handcrafted items and baked goods from more than 45 vendors will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Golden Belt Model Railroad Club will have nine layout displays at 1405 Main Street beginning at 1 p.m.

The fun really begins as the sun goes down. The Home for the Holidays Parade will wind down Main Street beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by the lighting of the Mayor's Tree at Jack Kilby Square at 6:15 p.m. Twenty-four life-sized Santas will be on display at 1223 Main Street beginning at 6:15 p.m., and children can also ensure their names are on the "Nice" list with a Santa meet-and-greet.&nbsp;

The evening will also feature free hot dogs and hot chocolate, free ice skating, horse-drawn wagon carriage and trolley rides, and a Christmas petting zoo. The night also kicks off the official opening of the Trail of Lights.

PAWNEE COUNTY – Brian C. Langston, 54 of Houston, Texas, made his formal First Appearance via Zoom November 20, before Pawnee Magistrate Judge Julie Cowell on a two count Criminal Complaint for alleged fish and game violations, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett.

Langston is charged with two counts of Unlawful Taking of Big Game alleging to have occurred on or about November 25, 2021, and September 29, 2022, in rural Pawnee County. The specific alleged fish and game violation is the alleged use of residential deer permits at a time when the defendant was a resident of Texas.

The charges stem from an investigation by the Kansas Department of Parks and Wildlife (KDPF) into a social media post indicating that a trophy whitetail buck taken in Pawnee County, in September of 2022, had set a new State Record for typical by muzzleloader with an official gross entry score of 213 5/8 and a net score of 190 7/8. The investigation revealed Langston also tagged a trophy deer in November of 2021 with a gross entry score of 183 5/8. The US Fish and Wildlife Services Task Force assisted with the investigation.

At the First Appearance, Judge Cowell advised the defendant of the charges, the possible penalties if convicted and his constitutional rights, including his right to counsel. If convicted, the defendant faces up to six months in the County Jail and a fine of not less than $5,000 on each count.

Arraignment has been scheduled for December 17, 2025.

Under Kansas Law, an antlered whitetail deer is considered “trophy big game” when it has an inside spread measuring at least 16 inches. In addition to the mandatory fines, violations involving trophy big game also carry mandatory restitution which is calculated by squaring the gross entry score minus 100 then multiplying by $2. For example, a whitetail deer with a 200 gross entry score would result in $20,000 in restitution (100 x 100 x $2).

It started out as what some would consider a teenage prank. But that’s not where it ended.

A 17-year-old boy was detained by law enforcement and placed under the supervision of Juvenile Services (JS) where one of the next steps was attendance at Day School.

He has fulfilled his requirements but remains on bond supervision as ordered by the court.

“I think it is important to own up to things when you do something you shouldn’t and be held accountable for it,” the teenager said. “Part of this was going to Day School, where I felt welcomed and comfortable in a more relaxed classroom with just a few students. This really helped me.”

The teenager has fulfilled his requirements in the classroom and online to earn his high school diploma. He works 30 to 40 hours a week at a local business and is interested in management training when the opportunity arises.

“I will continue to work and save money, and then go to college,” he commented. “I am considering Washburn University because they offer a dual-degree program in business and law. I think attorneys are needed in Kansas so I might stick around here after I finish my education.”

The teenager also expressed his appreciation to the JS staff. “They were non-judgmental and patient with me. They encouraged me and helped me get back on the right path. They really helped me a lot.”

Mike Daniel As the JS assistant director and Day School supervisor, Mike Daniel noted that once the teenager realized what he had done was a felony, “he was kind of scared when he considered the totality of his mistake. Right off, he asked what he should do. My first advice was to finish school to show the judge he can behave and be responsible.

“He became motivated to prove that he realizes he made a serious mistake. He had a lot of cheerleaders at Juvenile Services and in the school district. He did well in Day School and now looks forward to getting out on his own and continuing his education.”

Daniel outlined a few of the basics about Day School, noting the maximum number of students is seven, while three or four is common.

Offenses that can lead to Day School include drinking, vaping and truancy, as well as a wide range of misdemeanors and felonies.

The classroom schedule is 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The students work online from home on Mondays and Fridays. An average stay in Day School is a couple of months.

“The schools and Juvenile Services work closely together to see who could benefit from Day School,” Daniel said. “Both entities can recommend attendance. And if students don’t show up there is follow-up - immediately. We know when they are supposed to be here.”

Juvenile Services Day School helps teenager back to the right path

When it met Tuesday morning, the Barton County Commission reviewed qualifications from two firms seeking to provide engineering services to the county, filling the void created by the Dec. 12 retirement of County Engineer Barry McManaman. The commission selected Kirkham-Michael of Ellsworth.

"There will be a lot of figuring things out. This is a new way of doing things," said County Administrator Matt Patzner. Until now, the county has had an engineer on staff.

Because of this, the agreement will be on a year-to-year basis for now.

It calls for a rate of $2,800 per month, which includes at least 12 hours of service and representation at a minimum of one commission meeting in that period. Additional hours will be billed at an hourly rate.

"There is a shortage of engineers," said Commissioner Duane Reif. "We are kind of forced to do this."

This concept, which is used in other counties, will also provide tax savings.

"We've been kind of spoiled" having McManaman on staff”, Patzner said. "These will be big shoes to fill."

Also reviewed was a proposal submitted by Kaw Valley Engineering Inc. of Salina.

"We are kind of forced to do this."This concept, which is used in other counties, will also provide tax savings."We've been kind of spoiled" having McManaman on staff”, Patzner said. Barton Commission selects engineering firm ahead of McManaman retirement

Great Bend's Center for Counseling and Consultation offers a variety of programs for substance-use disorders. The multi-pronged attack includes individual and group therapies, as well as medically-assisted treatments. Kevin Ford, director of the substance use program, has more than four decades of experience in helping treat various addictions. Yet he's still learning about a new wave of addictions to the over-the-counter product kratom.

"Especially with the 7-OH, they become pretty quickly addicted," Ford said. "We’re talking about a very large amount of money being spent on these products. The least I’ve ever seen after people get started is $200 a week. I’ve heard of $700 a week."

In September, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a public warning about kratom, specifically the risks associated with 7-OH. Kratom and 7-OH are often marketed together in attractive packaging because 7-OH is naturally found in kratom in small amounts. Dr. Patrick Stang with the Center said kratom is a natural product of a particular tree in Southeast Asia. Just two percent of the natural product is 7-OH, while synthetic products available for purchase can contain up to 98 percent 7-OH.

"It doesn’t make very much of a change in a molecule to make a big difference in how it works in your brain or your body," Stang said. "Pharmaceutical companies do this all the time. They’ll take a medication they have, and change it a little bit to either make it more tolerable with fewer side effects or make it more effective."

7-OH products may be in gummy, liquid, tablet, or powder form. KDHE said the product is often sold as if it were the same as kratom, but 7-OH is more addictive. Using 7-OH in combination with alcohol or other sedatives may result in respiratory depression or death.

"It’s been outlawed in about seven states," said Ford. "It’s not outlawed in the state of Kansas, yet. The FDA is looking at it, or the drug enforcement people are looking at it, and trying to get it through the process of becoming illegal. I think it will happen. I think it will be a controlled substance, eventually."

Stang said those who are experiencing 7-OH addiction often come to the facility agitated, shaky, and with high blood pressure. The Center's medically-assisted program can help users get away from the use of kratom by tapering instead of cutting use cold-turkey. Coping skills are also implemented to assist with the mental side of addiction.

 <li>Because 7-OH acts on opioid receptors, it can cause respiratory depression and overdose.</li><li>Opioid overdose (including 7-OH) can be reversed with naloxone, a medication that restores normal breathing.</li><li>It is important to recognize that naloxone prevents opioid overdose. However, if 7-OH is mixed with other drugs or alcohol, then naloxone may not fully reverse the effects.</li><li>Naloxone can be administered through the nose or as an intramuscular injection to save a person’s life. Both methods are equally effective.</li><li>Anyone who suspects an overdose should call 911 immediately and administer naloxone, if available.</li>

 <li>Avoid all products containing 7-OH.</li><li>Read labels carefully when buying candies or supplements.</li><li>Talk to children and teens about the risks of 7-OH.</li><li>Keep 7-OH products away from children and pets.</li><li>Stay informed about overdose risks and keep naloxone available in case of an emergency.</li><li>Consult a healthcare provider before using any supplements, especially anything marketed for pain, energy or mood.</li><li>Seek medical care or call the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222 if you have concerns about 7-OH.</li>

Center for Counseling: Kratom the latest drug resulting in addiction

Another Thanksgiving is in the books and now all eyes - especially those young ones - turn to Christmas. The Great Bend Recreation Commission will again help bring in the holiday cheer with its 29th annual Santa's Workshop on Monday, Dec. 8, from 6-8 p.m. at the City Auditorium.

“Santa’s Workshop is one of the most joyful events of the entire year for both our staff and the community," said Rec Enrichment Director Garet Fitzpatrick, the main organizer of the event. "Watching the City Auditorium transform into a magical holiday space is just as exciting for us as it is for the kids. Our staff, volunteers, and the high school students truly look forward to this night—it’s a chance to celebrate the season, connect with families, and see the pure excitement on children’s faces as they explore the booths and visit Santa. It really is the perfect way to kick off the Christmas season in Great Bend.” 

Children can enjoy holiday-themed activity booths and get an early opportunity to meet with Santa himself. The free family event is designed for preschool through sixth-grade children and their families. 

"This year, we have a few exciting additions to make Santa’s Workshop even more magical," said GBRC Marketing and Enrichment Director Megan Hammeke. "We’ve added a couple of new festive photo spots for families to capture memories. Plus, Garet is bringing in talented puppet performers from StoneLion Puppet Theatre in Kansas City, who will be strolling through the event and entertaining guests throughout the evening. And that’s not all—special guests from the North Pole will be joining us, including a few of Santa’s reindeer. Families can visit the reindeer in the City Auditorium parking lot for a truly memorable experience. It’s going to be a fun, fresh twist on our beloved annual tradition."

Many children and their families return to Santa's Workshop each year, but Hammeke said those experiencing the auditorium's transformation into a winter wonderland are in for a surprise.

"As soon as they walk into the City Auditorium, they'll find the entire space transformed into a festive holiday land," she said. "Children can move from one activity to the next at their own pace, enjoying multiple craft stations, fish ponds, and fun photo spots perfect for capturing memories. And of course, the highlight of the night is a visit with Santa. Kids can share their wish lists, take photos, and even bring letters to drop off. The event is relaxed and family-friendly. It’s truly a magical way to celebrate the season together."

The Sorghum Connection Series, a collaboration between the Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission (KGSC), K-State Research &amp; Extension, and the K-State Department of Plant Pathology, announces its second year of a comprehensive winter educational series focused on enhancing the profitability of sorghum producers across the state.

Following this year’s field day events, which welcomed over 120 growers, Sorghum Connection offers an additional series of multiple one-day events across Central and Western Kansas. The events are scheduled for:

· December 3 at the South Hutchinson Community Building in Hutchinson

· December 4 at the Buffalo Bill Cultural Center in Oakley

· December 5 at the Hy-Plains Feedyard in Montezuma

Each event will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m. and will conclude at 2:30 p.m.

Attendees will receive valuable data-driven information from industry leaders from K-State, the United Sorghum Checkoff Program, and many others on key topics for both grain and forage sorghum, including, but not limited to:

· Effectively managing forage sorghum in water-limited silage

· Enhancing sorghum digestibility for cattle

· Strategies for optimum yield and profitability

The program also looks to the future of the sorghum crop system, covering advancements such as the application of spray drones in precision agriculture and highlighting breakthroughs in farmer-directed crop improvement.

If inclement weather does impact the highways, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is ready to treat roadways as needed. KDOT employees have been preparing since September: Salt, sand and brine materials have been ordered, trucks and other equipment have undergone preventive maintenance and crews have completed training courses.

“Whatever the obstacle, KDOT crew members work together and find a way to get the job done,” said Director of Field Operations Ron Hall. “Our crews always do their best to serve the public in their efforts to clear the highways.”

Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed&nbsp;shared a reminder for all travelers: “Check on road conditions and weather forecasts in advance and possibly delay travel plans. It’s important to stay informed, plan ahead and travel safe.”

Clearing snow from these highways takes time, especially while the snow is still falling.Secretary Reed emphasized the importance of safety for the crews working to keep roads open.“KDOT employees work challenging 12-hour shifts to remove snow and ice from the highways,” said Secretary Reed. “Don’t drive in their blind spots and give them space to work so they can focus on the job.”
