In early June last year, a 6,500-square-foot daycare opened in Great
Bend, a project facilitated by Great Bend Economic Development’s Advancing
Barton County Childcare. Economic Development Director Sara Arnberger said Bright
Beginnings Childcare Center will celebrate its one-year anniversary with an
event on June 20 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.


"We'll have some food and fun games for the kiddos," said Arnberger. "It's a good time, whether you have a child in childcare or not, to come out and see what we have been doing. You can see how the facility looks and what the kiddos have been up to."

Arnberger said prospective parents can take tours and receive information on
how to enroll their children.


Bright Beginnings is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at
4507 Farmers Plaza. The weekly tuition rate is $190 per child.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Helen Combs was awarded the Kansas Bankers Association 50 Years in Banking Award. This prestigious award is given to only a small handful of Kansas Bankers each year. Kansas Bankers Association President/CEO, Doug Wareham, was at First Kansas Bank on May 2 to present the award to Helen at her retirement reception.

Helen graduated from Brown Mackie College in Salina with an accounting degree. She started in banking on April 19, 1975 as a bookkeeper at American State Bank in Great Bend. She was promoted several times from bookkeeper to customer service representative, personal banker and loan officer. Helen joined First Kansas Bank in 2008 as Vice President and Residential Real Estate Loan Officer.

First Kansas Bank President/CEO, Paul Snapp, commented, “Helen was instrumental in the bank’s growth from $67 million in assets in 2008 to its present day $280 million in assets. Her leadership in innovative residential real estate coupled with developing close relationships with local realtors was critical to our success. Great Bend's Combs receives prestigious 50 Years in Banking Award

College baseball players from nearby and all around the country will be
converging in Great Bend this month as the Great Bend Bat Cats get set for year
nine. Like every year, the young men will need a place to call home for two
months of the summer. 

Bat Cats General Manager Roger Ward said while host
families are essential for the baseball team, the families often find the
experience very rewarding too.


"Until you have done it, you don't realize what you can get out of it as well," said Ward. "There have been families with young kids. There have been retired couples that have hosted. Many of them have kept in touch with the players and vice versa."

As of Wednesday, Ward noted he is working to find living arrangements for 12 more
players. While providing a bed and access to a bathroom are needed, Ward said
the involvement for each host family is their choice.


"They need a safe place to stay, a spot they can groom themselves and rest," said Ward. "These guys like to go out and eat on their own. They're out in the community. They support businesses. They like to eat together and do their own thing."

KIOWA COUNTY —Three people died in an accident just after 3:30p.m. Wednesday in Kiowa County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Ford F150 driven by Teresa Christine Davis, 68, Meade, was westbound in the eastbound lane of U.S. 54 nine miles west of Greensburg.

An eastbound 2026 Freightliner semi driven by Dishant&nbsp;Kukreja, 22, Sunnyvale, California traveled left of center to avoid pickup. The pickup reentered the westbound lane and struck the semi.

Davis and two passengers identified as 13-year-old Travis Welch and 10-year-old Hunter Welch both of Meade were pronounced dead at the scene.

 The semi driver was not injured. All four were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

TANEY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 9:30p.m. Wednesday in Taney County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Toyota Camry driven by a 69-year-old Hollister, Missouri, woman, was traveling in the wrong direction on U.S. 65 three miles south of Hollister. As the driver attempted to correct the direction of travel. A 2024 Peterbilt semi driven by a 26-year-old Larned man.&nbsp; After impact the car traveled off the right side of the road and overturned.

EMS transported the Camry driver to Cox South in Springfield. The semi driver was not injured. The Missouri woman was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

Larned man involved in rear-end crash in Missouri

Brian Ewing is back in the nest. After a few years away, Ewing returned
to Eagle Media in Great Bend as he reemerges himself as a marketing consultant.
Ewing started in early April, getting reacquainted with clients.


"I missed the people that I worked with," said Ewing. "There is also the fun you get to have doing the promotions and talking to the crowd. I really missed that."

Ewing spent seven years with Eagle from 2013 to 2020. Fast forward to this past
winter, he had major back surgery and needed a change.


"I've seen that if you don't advertise, you don't get people in your doors. You have to advertise. It's very important to advertise. If they don't know you're open, they won't come."

🎙Post Podcast: KS Wetlands Ed. Center Director Curtis Wolf

State forestry and horticulture experts are urging patience and persistence when trying to manage bagworms, noting that caterpillars may emerge from eggs from late spring through early summer, depending on weather conditions.

Shad Hufnagel, forest health coordinator with the Kansas Forest Service, and Raymond Cloyd, extension specialist in horticultural entomology with K-State Research and Extension, advise that homeowners scout for bagworms from early- to mid-May and apply insecticides when young bagworms are present.

Once bagworms are detected, they said, homeowners might need to treat with an insecticide weekly for up to four weeks.

Cloyd said that in addition to emergence over time, young bagworms can ‘blow in’ - called ‘ballooning’ - from neighboring plants on silken threads, thus increasing the importance of treating multiple times during the growing season.

“Once the caterpillars emerge from eggs, they begin feeding on the host tree or shrub, creating a protective bag, hence the common name,” Cloyd said. “The plant material fed upon is used to build a protective covering that provides protection from predators and insecticide treatments, which can influence the effectiveness of insecticide applications.”

Hufnagel added: “The larger and more robust the caterpillars and their cases become, the more difficult they are to control chemically.”

Bagworm feeding is commonly associated with such conifers as juniper, arborvitae, pine, and spruce, but Hufnagel said the caterpillars also feed on numerous deciduous host plants. Although defoliation of deciduous trees and shrubs typically does not result in long-term plant damage, extreme defoliation of conifers can cause significant plant stress and even plant mortality.

He said insecticides can be effective in mitigating damage to trees and shrubs. However, bagworm infestations are often cyclical; consequently, bagworm infestations may be low enough that spraying an insecticide may not be needed.

For increased effectiveness and to prevent bagworms from causing substantial plant damage, Hufnagel advises judicious treatment of windbreaks, Christmas trees, and ornamental landscape trees as soon as bagworms are present.

“Thorough coverage is important when treating for bagworms, including penetration into the interior plant canopy and upper branches,” he said. “Commercial treatments may be more effective for large trees or established windbreaks where applications from common household sprayers cannot reach the upper canopy of trees.”

Many insecticides are labeled for bagworms, but timing of application and thorough coverage will ensure the effectiveness of insecticides in managing bagworms. When bagworm caterpillars are small (1/8 to 1/4 of an inch long), products containing&nbsp;Bacillus thuringiensis&nbsp;subspecies&nbsp;kurstaki&nbsp;(Btk) or spinosad as the active ingredient can be effective in managing bagworms.

Cloyd said the recommended insecticides have minimal direct impact on beneficial insects compared to broad-spectrum insecticides, which could lead to outbreaks of spider mites or scale insects that can cause damage to treated trees and shrubs.

If insecticides are not applied when bagworm caterpillars are 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch in length, then broad-spectrum insecticides -- including those containing malathion, acephate, or cyfluthrin as the active ingredients -- can be applied. Be sure to read the product label and follow directions.

Hand removing and destroying bagworm bags is an option for smaller infestations.

BOOR: Managing bagworms 

From Great Bend High School speech team coach Kim Heath...

Once again, the Great Bend High School speech team had a successful weekend. They hosted a huge State tournament and finished 3rd in the State. On Saturday, May 3rd, the team split efforts between performing at the State Festival at Maize High School and hosting and competing in the 5A State Championship at home.

State Festival Success at Maize High School

Eight students represented Great Bend at the State Festival and returned home with an impressive seven superior “I” ratings and four “II” ratings. A I rating is defined as an outstanding presentation with few technical errors and exemplifies excellence. A II rating indicates a good presentation in many respects, but not worthy of the highest rating due to minor defects in presentation techniques or interpretation.

At the festival, Dixie Gallant earned a I in Prose and a II in Poetry, while Ella Nokes brought home two I ratings in both Poetry and Impromptu. Lea Nokes also received a I rating in Poetry, and Ailey Williams was awarded a I in Humorous Interpretation. Diana Stoddard earned a I in Impromptu, and Hunter McClanahan received a I in Informative. Kyra Calvert earned a II in Prose, and Rhys Froetschner picked up two II ratings in Impromptu and Extemporaneous Speaking.

Coach Kim Heath reflected, “It’s always amazing to see our students perform with poise and pride. The Festival results show the depth of talent we have on this team — and how much hard work these students have put in all year long.”

While the Festival team was collecting medals, Great Bend hosted 24 schools and over 260 entries at the 5A State Championship tournament. The GBHS team ran concessions, sold t-shirts, coordinated rounds, and handled the logistics of hosting a major event.

“We’ve hosted invitationals before, but this was something special,” Heath said. “Our students managed this tournament and interacted with the public like pros. Almost every student on the team was competing in the State Festival or Championship or helping with hosting duties”

“I’m deeply grateful to our administrators, our incredible custodial staff, our community judges, and everyone who played a part in making this possible,” continued Heath. “The support we felt from our school was overwhelming — and it meant everything to us. The entire community played a role in helping Great Bend Speech rise to the occasion.”

State Finalist Highlights and Trophy Finish

Great Bend High School secured the 3rd Place Sweepstakes trophy — the first time in nearly 20 years the team has earned a top-three finish at State. Andover High School was named the 2025 5A State Speech and Drama Champions, and Basehor-Linwood High School earned the Runner-Up trophy.

Out of 17 events, eleven Great Bend entries advanced to semifinals. Among the many standout performances, Steven Guillory placed 8th in Impromptu, and Parker Coleman earned 9th in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and 12th in International Extemp. Anna Bitter and Ellie Damm finished 10th in Duo Interpretation. Ellie Damm also placed 10th in Poetry. Mark Sperlein was right behind with an 11th place finish in Poetry.

Five of the 11 semifinalists continued on to finals. Darcy Feist was crowned a Double State Champion, winning 1st place in both Program Oral Interpretation (POI) and Oration. Steven Guillory and Quinton Heath were named State Runners-Up in Duo Interpretation, and Reese King took home a 3rd-place medal in Informative. Anna Bitter placed 5th in POI.

Also earning Sweepstakes points for the Panthers were Kendra Schneideman who finished 14th in Oration. Quinton Heath took 15th in Dramatic Interpretation, Kyra Lewis placed 15th in Domestic Extemp, Darcy Feist earned 17th in Prose, and Zachary Hart finished 17th in International Extemp. Samantha Negaard rounded out the team’s points with a 20th-place finish in Dramatic Interpretation.

“This was one of the proudest weekends of my coaching career,” said Heath. “To see our students shine competitively, act as hosts for hundreds of visitors, and support one another so genuinely — it’s exactly what speech and debate should be.”

After a year of exciting growth and development, the Clara Barton Hospital Foundation is eager to celebrate its 32nd Annual Benefit over Father’s Day weekend (June 13 – 14)! This year’s event theme, “Operation OR Modernization,” calls on supporters to become Instrumental Agents of Change for Clara Barton’s surgical services. Proceeds will help upgrade critical sterilization equipment in the surgical department, maintaining the highest level of patient safety.

To kick off Father’s Day Weekend, the four-man scramble golf tournament will be held on Friday, June 13th at Lake Barton Golf Course, with tee times beginning at 6:40 AM. The cost to enter the tournament is $100 per player or $400 per team. Registration includes green fees, golf cart rental, lunch on the course, and a player gift. During this year’s tournament, you will have the chance to win awards for three tournament flights – top three places, thanks to sponsors Ehler Chevrolet, First Kansas Bank, and Barton County Transfer Service. Tee times are first-come, first-served.

The memorable Hole-In-One Contest will offer golfers two chances to win $1,000, thanks to Ehler Chevrolet. Other contests sponsored by Cardinal Pharmacy include longest drive, longest putt, closest to the hole, and straightest shot for both men’s and women’s divisions.

On Saturday, June 14th, a catered dinner - sponsored by Nex-Tech, Nex-Tech Wireless, and Superior Essex - will be available at the Columbus Club Hall (114 N. Main Street in Hoisington). Doors open at 6:00 PM, with dinner served at 6:30 PM. This year’s dinner features brisket, pulled pork, baked beans, southern green beans, smoked mac &amp; cheese, fresh veggies, dinner roll, and cheesecake.

Dinner tickets are $35 each and must be purchased by Wednesday, June 4th. All tickets must be secured in advance, as there will be no ticket sales on the night of the event. Proceeds will help upgrade critical sterilization equipment in the surgical department, maintaining the highest level of patient safety.To kick off Father’s Day Weekend, the four-man scramble golf tournament will be held on Friday, June 13th at Lake Barton Golf Course, with tee times beginning at 6:40 AM. Talks of what to do with the Washington school building in Great Bend
have been ongoing for years but have heated up more this semester. To get a better
feel for the situation at the repurposed school building, the USD 428 Board of
Education took a tour of the facility last week following their monthly
luncheon. 

USD 428 Assistant Superintendent John Popp said afterwards that several
options have been tossed around for Washington.


"We've talked about moving other programs here and spending more money on the newer side of the building to get it up to speed like a more modern building," said Popp. "We really don't want to spend that much money on it at this point. We continue to slim it down and find the bare minimum."

Sections of the building were built in the early 1900s, others added on in what
is estimated the 1980s. While the building, at the intersection of Washington
Avenue and Lakin Avenue, is used for a few district initiatives and the Parent
Teacher Resource Center (PTRC), there are unused areas containing lead-based
paint and asbestos.


"Do we keep this and wait until we need it later on and update it?" questioned Popp. "That will cost a lot of money. Do we tear it down and get rid of it? That's going to cost a lot of money. It's weighing all of those things. The truth is, we're not in a hurry to do anything with it, so we can take our time."

USD 428 administration received a quote of just over $1 million to demolish the
older section and shore up the remaining building. Popp said the school board will
reconsider any future decisions on Washington at this month’s meeting.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend school board tours Washington building, weighs options

Organizers of the upcoming Mental Health Awareness Day are especially pleased with this year’s theme because it encourages the community to step up and support people who face behavioral challenges, said Holly Bowyer, planning committee chair at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, the event’s host.

The theme for the special day and throughout May is “Turn Awareness into Action”; May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

The local awareness-day event is set for 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Jack Kilby Square in downtown Great Bend. In case of inclement weather, it will move to the city auditorium.

“Since we are aligned with the theme conceived by Mental Health America, we want to strongly urge people to get involved,” Bowyer said. “If you know someone who is struggling with conditions such as anxiety, depression, grief or trauma, you can be there for them and provide support.

“For example, you can help them seek local professional guidance. There are many entities in Great Bend and the surrounding area that are available to individuals and families.”

The Center continues to sponsor the annual awareness event because “behavioral health affects everybody,” Bowyer noted. “We can showcase our services and provide this venue for our many community partners. We are so grateful for these partners who take this opportunity to share information about their programs.”

They can learn about all these resources and how to turn knowledge into action.
