Everyone wants a place to call “home,” but being able to use that term hasn’t been easy for some people in western Kansas.

Tiger Media Network’s documentary, “The Cost of a Dream,” explores housing concerns in Hays through the eyes of local residents, city officials and community leaders. TMN is the student-produced convergent media hub at Fort Hays State University.

Produced by TMN’s summer internship team of Kyson Evans, Katie Kuhlman and Taylor Thompson, the documentary sheds light on the challenges of finding affordable, family-friendly housing.

The film offers an in-depth look at how housing insecurity affects cities like Hays, contributing to a rise in housing instability and even homelessness for working families, single parents and vulnerable populations. It also examines potential solutions and efforts being made to address the issues.

“Coming from the capital city of Topeka, city development isn’t something you often think about — it just happens around you,” Evans said. “But in a smaller town like Hays, you really see how interconnected everything is. Everyone is part of a larger web, working toward the same goal. That kind of collaboration was something special and worth documenting.”

Working on the summer project gave the producers a new perspective on how deeply housing issues affect entire communities — not just individuals.

“This documentary is important to me because it helps bring awareness to the housing issues that often go unnoticed,” Thompson said. “By sharing these stories, we hope to start conversations and inspire real change in communities like Hays.”

Evans and Thompson had prior experience with documentary filmmaking from the Advanced Video course at FHSU, but this was the first project of this scale for the group.

“Overall, this was a one-of-a-kind experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone,” Kuhlman said. “It allowed me to try something completely new and explore a different direction in my career that I hadn’t considered before.” “The Cost of a Dream” will premiere at 6 p.m. Aug. 7, on the Tiger Media Network YouTube channel.

The documentary is the third long-form feature produced by TMN summer interns during the last three summers.

“This year’s summer documentary is a bit different than the last two,” said Nick Schwien, director of Tiger Media Network. “This one is a bit more localized and focuses on an issue that is relevant to many in Hays. Through the roughly eight weeks of work, the students conducted multiple interviews and worked as a team in a real-world environment. Our ability to provide learning opportunities like these have helped students stand out in the job market when applying for employment after graduation. Kyson, Katie and Taylor took on a tough topic and worked hard to produce a quality product.”

GBHS grad part of new documentary about housing concerns in Hays

After nearly nine days closed due to severe storm damage, Kelly’s Garden Sense Greenhouse is open again—and celebrating with a major Storm Sale to thank the community that helped make a quick recovery possible.

The July storm tore the roof from the main retail greenhouse, damaged pottery, destroyed countless plants, and left a big mess behind. But with the support of friends, family, and local businesses, Kelly’s Garden Sense reopened on July 31 and is now back to serving customers during summer hours: Monday–Friday 7 a.m.– 2 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.– 1 p.m.

“From lending equipment to bringing lunch and sweet treats, this community wrapped its arms around us,” said owner Kelly Meyer-Moeder. “We are beyond grateful for every single person who stepped in to help us get back on our feet.”

Kelly’s Garden Sense extends heartfelt thanks to Mark Guthrie of Guthrie Signs for providing a 60-ft boom truck, Paul Pack for donating a bucket truck for Kelly’s husband Paul Moeder to use, Howard Meyer (Kelly’s father) for the scissors lift, her father-in-law for the extension ladder, and to Ellen Mermis and Allie Cartwright, and her Freaking Delicious Cheesecakes and cookies, for bringing food and treats to keep spirits high.

Kelly’s Garden Sense reopens after storm; thanks community with big savings

Blue-green algae blooms are an issue that usually occurs during the spring and summer. Calm, sunny, dry, and hot days of summer create ideal conditions for blue-green algae to thrive in our livestock ponds. Blue-green algae occurrence is sporadic making its threat unpredictable. Despite its name, these blooms are not algae, but a cyanobacteria. Some of these cyanobacteria can produce and release dangerous toxins that are of major concern for our livestock.

These “cyanotoxins” typically show up as either neurotoxins, or hepatotoxins which means they can damage the nervous system or the liver function of animals. Typically, the first clinical sign noticed in pasture cattle that have consumed neurotoxins are dead cattle. If found early enough, cattle may have muscle tremors, difficulty breathing, seizures, slobbering, and diarrhea. Hepatotoxins can cause an acute death similar to neurotoxins or lead to delayed issues with liver failure. An example of this would be weight loss and photosensitization, which can be recognized by severe sun burns on areas of the body not covered with hair. Since there are several causes of acute death in pasture cattle, contact your local veterinarian for diagnosis. Unfortunately, there are no known antidotes to these cyanotoxins. So, understanding what to look for, and avoiding livestock exposure is important.

Blue-green algae blooms float at or just below the surface of the water. The appearance almost looks like paint in the water. Once the cyanobacteria die, it turns a blue color. The color can also vary to a grey to almost a red or brown color as well. Toxin concentrations in affected water can vary drastically. The wind can move these blooms and concentrate them in certain areas along the shorelines of ponds. These concentrations increase the lethality of the toxic blooms.

Preventing exposure to blue-green algae toxins is very important during the summer months. There are some options for livestock producers if blue-green algae is suspected or has been identified. Of course, fencing off natural water sources and providing alternative water sources is the best option (well water, hauled water), but is typically financially limiting. Fencing off certain areas of the ponds (downwind portion of ponds) may help limit exposure. Improved&nbsp;watering areas, such as pipe-fed waterers, may also limit exposure as long as the water inlet is located in a low-risk area of the pond. A submerged inlet in the center of the pond is an area where the cyanobacteria are unlikely to concentrate. Improved water sources like this will also help increase other water quality attributes. Controlled access and tank waterers decrease sediment, nutrients and fecal coliform bacteria from building up in the water source. 

Treatment of the water source with copper sulfate has historically been recommended. However, the copper accumulates in the pond, leading to other potential problems with plants and animals alike and is not recommended. Barley straw is also often discussed as a control measure. While the mechanism is unknown, barley straw may help reduce new blooms from forming but do not directly kill active blooms.

Monitoring of stock ponds during the summer months and having a plan in place to combat blue-green algae will help ensure the health and wellbeing of our herds. Water samples can be sent to the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Lab:

Most abatement projects within the Great Bend city limits pertain to unsafe properties. Monday night, the city council took a small departure from the norm to address an unsightly vehicle on the west side of town. City Administrator Logan Burns laid out the issue to the voting body before approval of a resolution that will allow the city to remove the vehicle at 5825 Birchwood Drive.

"There's a blue-colored pickup on the property that is either not displaying current registration and/or is in inoperable condition," Burns said. "This one, we've had complaints that it's been there for over a year. This is our chance to take a look at this. The wheels are chalked. We've cleaned up several other violations at this property as well, but this is one of the remaining ones."

The resolution states the owner of the property was properly delivered notices and failed to request a hearing on the matter. The resolution, which passed 7-0, allows the city to move forward with the abatement by removing the vehicle. All costs associated with the abatement will go against the assessment of the property. Burns reported the residence is occupied and the owner cited financial reasons for not addressing the vehicle complaints.

Great Bend Council votes to take action on vehicle abatement

To help address what was termed a big issue, Barton County has been awarded a $239,138 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to develop a county-wide transportation plan.

The grant, a fiscal year 2025 Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant, was awarded to the Barton County Health Department for the Barton County Accessible Public Transportation (BCAPT) Planning Project.

Karen Winkelman, the county health director, announced the grant to the county commission Tuesday morning. The two-year grant period is set to begin on Oct. 1, 2025, and will conclude on Sept. 30, 2027.

“The grant funds will be used to develop a master transportation plan for the entire county through a community engagement process that will include surveys, focus groups and community events,” Winkelman said.

The grant is the third time the county has applied for funding for a transportation plan. “We were persistent because of the need,” Winkelman said.

The need for improved transportation was identified during Community Health Needs Assessments conducted by local hospitals and the public health department. According to Winkelman, transportation was one of the top three priorities identified in each community, alongside food insecurity and mental health awareness.

The grant funds will be used to hire a rural public transportation consultant, who will assist the county in developing a request for proposals and a community engagement process. The project will also revisit and update a Chronic Diseases Reduction Grant-funded 2016 bicycle and pedestrian master plan that was never implemented due to a lack of funding.

The grant is a reimbursement grant, meaning the county will incur expenses and then be reimbursed by the federal government. The budget will support the hiring of the consultant, a portion of the salaries for two health department staff members, and contracting supplies.

The grant agreement is not yet finalized. A planned kickoff meeting with the U.S. Department of Transportation was canceled and has not yet been rescheduled. The County Commission directed its chairman to approve the grant award, subject to a review of the final agreement by County Counselor Patrick Hoffman.

“I do think transportation is a very big issue,” said Commission Chairman Tricia Schlessiger, District 4. It is even a concern in smaller communities like Ellinwood.

“This will involve a lot of community engagement” with all segments of the population, Winkelman said. “Community engagement is the key. We can go out there and say what we think is needed, but it's the community members who are experiencing the gaps so we need their voices heard.”

Winkelman noted the grant does not require the county to provide matching funds.

Barton County awarded federal grant for transportation project

The celebration was on last Friday at Heizer Park in Great Bend. The overhaul at the park includes new mini-pitch soccer courts, a restroom facility, and new security cameras that have already paid dividends. Friday, the Kiwanis Club, Great Bend City Council, and other city staff members met at the location to recognize Kiwanis' $30,000 shade structure donation to the improvements.

The shade structure is similar to the one at the Veterans Park splash pad with dimensions of 20x30 feet. It features a different color scheme, the Kiwanis Club logo, and Kiwanis Pavilion lettering.

The Musco mini-pitch soccer courts and new netting behind the goals have already seen plenty of action. The 55x80 yard field recently hosted a tournament with teams from as far away as Salina and Wichita.

The overhaul at the park includes new mini-pitch soccer courts, a restroom facility, and new security cameras that have already paid dividends. Friday, the Kiwanis Club, Great Bend City Council, and other city staff members met at the location to recognize Kiwanis' $30,000 shade structure donation to the improvements.The shade structure is similar to the one at the Veterans Park splash pad with dimensions of 20x30 feet. It features a different color scheme, the Kiwanis Club logo, and Kiwanis Pavilion lettering.<figure>

Renovated Heizer Park already seeing increased usage; GB recognizes Kiwanis

Many local governmental seats go uncontested during elections. Some even go without a single candidate filing for the position. The Kansas Department of Transportation announces approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects. The letting took place July 23, 2025, in Topeka. Some of the bids may include multiple projects that have been bundled based on proximity and type of work.

There are several projects in District Five that includes Barton and Pawnee Counties. In Barton, crack repairs will take place on 9.1 miles of US-56 Highway from the east city limits of Great Bend to the east city limits of Ellinwood. McPherson's Pavement Pros LLC turned in the winning bid of $134,311.13.

In Pawnee County, crack repairs will take place on 25.3 miles of K-156 Highway from the Hodgeman and Pawnee county line east to the US-183/K-156 junction, and from the US 183/K-156 junction north to the Rush/Pawnee county line. Pavement Pros will also complete work on that project with a cost of $172,020.89.

Work will also be done on 11 miles of K-14 in Rice County from the north city limits of Lyons to the Rice/Ellsworth county line. Pavement Pros will complete the work with a cost of $62,459.07.

In March of 2023, a Pawnee County Jury found Hammond Guilty of four counts of Aggravated Indecent Liberty with a Child, to wit: sexual intercourse with a child 14 or 15 years of age, and one count of Indecent Liberties with a Child, to wit: lewd fondling of child 14 or 15 years of age, following a five-day trial.

The crimes were alleged to have occurred in Pawnee County between July 8, 2018, and December 15, 2018. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation handled the investigation following a referral by the Pawnee County Sheriff.

At the sentencing held June 30, 2023, Judge Bruce Gatterman denied a defense request for probation and sentenced Hammond on the primary offense to the standard sentence of 59 months with an additional 37 month consecutive sentence on the additional counts for a total sentence of 96 months in the department of corrections. Hammond is also subject to lifetime post-release supervision and lifetime offender registration as a sex offender.

Hammond is currently incarcerated at the Lansing Correctional Facility.

On May 20, 2025, a three-judge panel of the Court of Appeals heard appellate oral arguments. On appeal, the defendant argued the District Court errored when it failed to grant a mistrial when an alternate juror was released on the fourth day of the jury trial due to a family emergency. The defendant also argued that the District Court errored when it failed to grant probation and by sentencing him to lifetime post-release supervision.

Pawnee County Attorney Douglas McNett presented the State’s case at trial. The Kansas Solicitor General’s Office represented the State on Appeal. Hammond was represented by Jonathon McConnell of Wichita, Kansas at trial and Jonathan Laurans of Kansas City on Appeal.

Court upholds conviction and sentence of child sex offender

Monday morning, just before 9 a.m., deputies with the Barton County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant on a residence in the 1500 block of Broadway in the city of Great Bend. Deputies gained entry to the residence without incident and secured the individuals inside.

Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were located inside the home and the two subjects were placed under arrest. Arrested at the scene was Eric Zecha and Bonnie Kuhn, both of Great Bend. Kuhn had outstanding warrants from the Barton County District Court and was also booked on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.  Zecha was booked on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and harboring a fugitive.  Both are being held in lieu of a $10,000 bond.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The State of Kansas ends July 2025 with total tax collections at $670.2 million. That is $21.2 million, or 3.3%, above the estimate. Total tax collections were up 1.5% from July 2024.&nbsp;

“While this month’s tax collections highlight the strength of Kansas’ workforce and economy&nbsp;in the short-term, I remain concerned about the long-term fiscal health of the state,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“We&nbsp;must stay vigilant and&nbsp;recommit&nbsp;to fiscally responsible budgeting&nbsp;in order to stay out of the red in the&nbsp;coming years.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Individual income tax collections were $347.5 million. That is $32.5 million, or 10.3% above the estimate. Individual income tax collections were up 12.7% from July 2024. Corporate income tax collections were $18.5 million. That is $16.5 million, or 47.1% below the estimate, and down 46.0% from July 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Combined retail sales and compensating use tax receipts were $291.8 million, which is $2.2 million, or 0.8% below the estimate, and down 4.4% from July 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

As we continue to recognize August as National Breastfeeding Month, I wanted to share more articles focused on breastfeeding and highlight some of the key topics and challenges commonly discussed in the field of lactation. From access to lactation support to the social and cultural perceptions of breastfeeding, there’s a wide range of important conversations happening. By exploring these issues, we hope to raise awareness, provide support, and empower families in their infant feeding journeys.

In today’s modern parenting culture, breastfeeding beyond infancy often sparks debate—drawing praise, curiosity, and criticism in equal measure. Known as full-term breastfeeding or natural-term breastfeeding, this practice refers to nursing a child beyond the first year of life, often continuing until the child weans naturally, sometimes at age three, four, or even older. While it may seem unconventional in some societies, anthropology and biology tell a different story—one that suggests full-term breastfeeding is deeply rooted in human history and may offer real benefits worth reconsidering.

What Anthropology Reveals Anthropologists studying primate behavior and traditional human societies offer valuable insights into what constitutes a "biologically normal" duration of breastfeeding. By comparing nursing habits of closely related primates and examining skeletal development and immune markers in human infants, experts have estimated that the natural weaning age for humans may fall anywhere between 2.5 and 7 years of age.

Katherine Dettwyler, a biological anthropologist known for her research on breastfeeding, has famously argued that full-term breastfeeding is the evolutionary norm for humans. In her studies of various cultures around the world, breastfeeding into toddlerhood and beyond is not only common but expected. It’s only in more industrialized nations—particularly the U.S.—that early weaning has become the norm, largely due to social pressures, marketing of formula, and a lack of public breastfeeding support.

Benefits of Breastfeeding Beyond Infancy From a health perspective, the benefits of breastfeeding do not expire at 12 months. Breast milk continues to provide vital nutrients, antibodies, and immune support for as long as a child nurses. In fact, research shows that the composition of breast milk changes over time to meet the evolving needs of a growing child.

Breastfeeding beyond infancy also offers emotional and psychological benefits. It provides comfort, security, and a continued attachment between parent and child. Having a primary attachment figure is essential for social emotional development. For toddlers and preschoolers, nursing can be a source of calm during emotional stress, illness, or developmental transitions.

Additionally, mothers who breastfeed for longer durations benefit from reduced risks of breast and ovarian cancers, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. These protective effects are dose specific which means the protective effect increases the longer a woman breastfeeds.

Challenging Social Stigma Despite its natural roots and health advantages, full-term breastfeeding is often misunderstood in Western society. Mothers who choose to breastfeed older children may face ridicule or concern, even though major health organizations like the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics support breastfeeding for two years or more, as long as it is mutually desired.

Much of the stigma arises from cultural discomfort with bodies and boundaries of the breast. But when viewed through an anthropological lens, full-term breastfeeding is not an act of indulgence or eccentricity—it is a return to a biologically and historically normal practice.

Why Consider It? Choosing to breastfeed past infancy is deeply personal. But for parents exploring their options, full-term breastfeeding deserves serious consideration. Its roots in human evolution, documented health benefits, and emotional support for both child and mother make it a powerful, if often misunderstood, parenting choice. The assumption is the pool is going away and the bathhouse is staying. That was the message from Brad Shores, officer manager at Wichita JEO, before the Great Bend City Council voted on a design contract Monday night with the city's on-call engineering service. The body voted 7-0 to approve the $30,000 contract with the goal of renovating the Wetlands Waterpark immediately following the 2026 swim season.

"Our schedule is achievable, but it's aggressive," Shores said. "We're trying to have construction start, say, right after the 2026 pool season. That's doable. It's very aggressive and that's probably not going after a lot of grants."

City Administrator Logan Burns said a pool committee will be formed to assist with decisions on the project. Shores said a committee of five to seven members is ideal though JEO can work with a body of any size. With Monday's approval of the design contract, Shores said work begins to present the first of three concepts to the committee.

"Let's give you big concepts, something very different, so you have two to compare with right out of the gate," he said. "They don't have to be tweaks. We can blow up the first concept we give you or do something very different. The goal is to land on a final concept."

The goal is to determine what a new pool will look like, what types of features it will have, the size of the pool, and the costs. Under the Qualify of Life Sales Tax Plan, the city has earmarked approximately $6 million for the project.

The Wetlands Waterpark was originally built in 1936 with several features added throughout the years. The pool currently offers approximately 12,000 square feet of aquatic space.

That was the message from Brad Shores, officer manager at Wichita JEO, before the Great Bend City Council voted on a design contract Monday night with the city's on-call engineering service. The body voted 7-0 to approve the $30,000 contract with the goal of renovating the Wetlands Waterpark immediately following the 2026 swim season."Our schedule is achievable, but it's aggressive," Shores said. "We're trying to have construction start, say, right after the 2026 pool season. That's doable. It's very aggressive and that's probably not going after a lot of grants."City Administrator Logan Burns said a pool committee will be formed to assist with decisions on the project. Shores said a committee of five to seven members is ideal though JEO can work with a body of any size. With Monday's approval of the design contract, Shores said work begins to present the first of three concepts to the committee."Let's give you big concepts, something very different, so you have two to compare with right out of the gate," he said. "They don't have to be tweaks. We can blow up the first concept we give you or do something very different. The goal is to land on a final concept."The goal is to determine what a new pool will look like, what types of features it will have, the size of the pool, and the costs. Under the Qualify of Life Sales Tax Plan, the city has earmarked approximately $6 million for the project.The Wetlands Waterpark was originally built in 1936 with several features added throughout the years. The pool currently offers approximately 12,000 square feet of aquatic space.

Dry conditions come with their own set of perks, but the summer of 2025 has been anything but dry. South Central Kansas experienced flash flooding in early June. Up to two inches of rain was reported in Great Bend overnight on July 21, and even more precipitation fell across the area this weekend. The ugly side of all the moisture: mosquitoes. Great Bend City Administrator Logan Burns updated the city council about spraying strategies during Monday's meeting.

"After the reports we received today regarding mosquitoes, we made the decision to now spray on Mondays and Thursdays," he said. "Going forward, that will be 8 p.m. to midnight. We rotate two different chemicals on each side of town each week, and we can spray every three days with the chemicals we are using."

The city previously sprayed Thursday of each week, but the new schedule is effective immediately with another round of spraying Monday night. The new schedule will remain in place through September, when city officials can determine if the extra fogging is still warranted.

One chemical used by the city kills the flying pests while the other sterilizes. One side of town gets the sterilizing chemical and the other side gets the insecticide. The sprays are switched the following week.

Last week, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced the entire state of Kansas is at high risk of West Nile Virus due to increased numbers of mosquitoes. With the extra fogging, the public is encouraged to take precautions to limit exposure to themselves, especially those with medical issues, and pets.

Arnberger Joins The Center for Counseling & Consultation as marketing director

Parties are generally reserved for the weekend. But Mother Nature makes her own schedule. The Kansas Wetlands Education Center northeast of Great Bend is hosting a Perseid Meteor Shower Watch Party on Tuesday - yes, Tuesday, Aug. 12, from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Star gaze away from city lights and look for shooting stars from the KWEC lawn. Bring a chair or blanket for comfort. Attendees can also see a real meteorite, on loan from the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays, and go on their own magnetic meteor hunt.

Viewers can also make a spectroscope to view the spectrum of light and use the Cottonwood K-State Research and Extension blender bike to make a galaxy smoothie. The Fort Hays State University Planetarium will also be on site, and attendees can design an asteroid belt masterpiece. As with many KWEC outside activities, s'mores will be available.

The event coincides with the peak of the Perseids. Each year, as Earth passes through the dust and debris of the Swift-Tuttle comet, it may be possible to spot 60-100 meteors per hour.  The watch party will go on regardless of weather conditions.

The Fort Hays State University Planetarium will also be on site, and attendees can design an asteroid belt masterpiece. As with many KWEC outside activities, s'mores will be available.The event coincides with the peak of the Perseids. Each year, as Earth passes through the dust and debris of the Swift-Tuttle comet, it may be possible to spot 60-100 meteors per hour. The watch party will go on regardless of weather conditions.

Rig counts are dropping toward five-year lows again, as horizontal drillers post big declines. The latest report from Baker Hughes is down five oil rigs from last week, while the gas tally was up two. The breakout for horizontal rigs drops a whopping 12 rigs from a week ago, and 49 from a year ago, marking the biggest decline in recent memory. Rig counts have dropped below this week's 540 only twice since September of 2021. Texas is down four rigs for the week. Oklahoma and Louisiana are each down one.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is down one rig in eastern Kansas and up two west of Wichita for a total of 19 active rigs. That's up nearly 60% from a month ago but down nearly 35% from a year ago.

Kansas Common crude starts the week and the month at $57.50 per barrel after falling two dollars on Friday. The average price for Kansas Common at CHS in McPherson in July is $57.44 per barrel.&nbsp; That's 76 cents a barrel cheaper than June, and down from last July by more than $13 a barrel.

Kansas regulators gave their okay to 21 new drilling locations, or 430 so far this year, compared to 591 a year ago. There are seven new permits in Western Kansas including one in Finney County.

Operators completed 16 wells last week. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports seven in Western Kansas. That's 725 completed wells so far this year, compared to 745 a year ago.

Kansas regulators gave the green light to 91 new drilling locations in July, including three in Ellis County. That's 480 intent-to-drill notices so far this year, down from 655 through July last year.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserves now stand at 402.7 million barrels after taking delivery on 200,000 barrels last week. Strategic stockpiles are up more than 25 million barrels from a year ago.

At 426.7 million barrels, commercial crude inventories are up 7.7 million barrels from last week. The government says stockpiles are about six percent below the five-year average for this time of year.US crude production for the week increased slightly to just over 13.3 million barrels a day. Cumulative output this year remains above 13.4 million barrels a day.

Crude imports increased to 6.1 million barrels a day last week, up 159,000 barrels a day from a week earlier. The Energy Information Administration reports the four-week average is also 6.1 million, down eleven percent from a year ago.

EIA reports crude exports dropped by 30% from a week ago and 45% from a year ago to just under 2.7 million barrels a day. Four-week average exports are down by 25% from a year ago.

The Republic of the Congo is opening up a huge swath of land to energy exploration, in what's described in The Guardian newspaper as "the world’s worst place to prospect for oil.” It's pristine forests include the habitats of endangered wildlife.

President Donald Trump shortened his deadline for Russia in Ukraine from 50 days to just "ten-to-twelve days." Trump is now threatening Russia with so-called secondary sanctions on it's oil export customers, notably China and India.&nbsp;&nbsp;
