RUSSELL COUNTY—A Missouri man was injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Sunday in Russell County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Kenworth semi driven by&nbsp; Vincent O. Weiss, 66, St. Joseph, Mo., was westbound on Interstate 70 just before 181 Street during severe weather conditions.

A strong gust of wind hit the truck, pushing it across both lanes of the highway and into the median where it rolled onto the drivers side.

EMS transported Weiss to Russell Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Jack plans to park his trailers and equipment inside the lot and then put an 8' tall, screened fence around the property.

Larned school district recognizes 2024 retirees

The
drought monitor report as of Tuesday, May 14 shows a slight easing for parts of
the state but our area and the moderate drought isn’t easing here.&nbsp; In fact, there is now an area of extreme
drought in the extreme southwest corner of Rush County and northeastern Pawnee
County.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Southeast Kansas continues faring the best
currently along with the northern tier of counties and the Kansas City area. &nbsp;The six to ten-day outlook (May 21 to 25) indicates
a 33 to 50% chance of leaning to above normal temperatures and 33 to 40% chance
of leaning to above normal for precipitation.&nbsp;
The eight to fourteen-day outlook (May 23 to 29) indicates a 33 to 50%
chance of leaning to above normal temperatures and a 33 to 40% leaning above
normal for precipitation.&nbsp; The challenge
is rainfall is typically scattered storms and widespread beneficial rains are
unlikely.

Today, let’s discuss spring planting and this area’s soil moisture
conditions.&nbsp; Irrigated land is less
impacted; however, producers would prefer to save as much water as possible for
critical growth stages.&nbsp; For dryland
producers, the situation is much different.&nbsp;
Some land has received recent rains while other fields barely a
sprinkle.&nbsp; Almost no are soil has
adequate subsoil moisture with entire region under moderate drought conditions
and it would take well above normal rainfall for an extended period of time to
make a substantial impact.&nbsp; Or we could
hope for regular timely rains.&nbsp; Neither
scenario seems likely as of today’s long-range outlook.&nbsp; So, what can dryland producers do?

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; First,
determine how much soil moisture you have.&nbsp;
Almost none.&nbsp; Some moisture but
not much with no subsoil moisture.&nbsp; Or
decent moisture.&nbsp; Look at the weather
forecast for the next several weeks.&nbsp; And
look at the field’s soil type.&nbsp; Is it
sandier like many soils south of the river?&nbsp;
Is it a silt loam or heavier soil?&nbsp;
Does the soil have decent residue cover or is it essentially bare?&nbsp; What is soil structure like.&nbsp; Little structure and loose?&nbsp; Massive and solid retarding root growth? Does
it have a granular (crumbly structure)?

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Sandier
soils hold less water and will dry out more quickly than heavier soils.&nbsp; Residue cover helps keep the soil cooler and
acts as a vapor barrier to decrease evaporation.&nbsp; Better soil structure, granular, is easier
for plant roots to explore and indicates better infiltration rates and water
holding capacity.&nbsp; A powderier structure
tends to crust and compact with a high initial infiltration rate but as the
surface seals, water runs off.&nbsp; The
massive, solid structure is difficult for roots to penetrate and has a low
infiltration rate.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Do
you plant or wait?&nbsp; If you have decent soil
moisture the answer is easy.&nbsp; Plant.&nbsp; If it’s very dry, you can wait for rain.&nbsp; The area is growing short on time for corn
with adequate time left for grain sorghum and soybeans.&nbsp; You can dust it in at normal depth and hope
for adequate rainfall.&nbsp; The hardest
decision is when you have some but no much soil moisture.&nbsp; You may have enough for the seed to germinate
and emerge, but if conditions are hot and dry, it’s likely you will lose
significant numbers of plants.&nbsp; Or you
can wait, especially with grain sorghum and soybeans, hoping for decent
rainfall.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A
final consideration involves fertilizer and herbicide inputs.&nbsp; Fortunately for corn and grain sorghum, a
split application of nitrogen is recommended anyway so you can’t wait and
evaluate.&nbsp; Soil applied herbicides need
rainfall to activate is another concern.

It’s a very challenging
time for dryland crop producers.&nbsp; The
best solution is rain.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Governor Laura Kelly has declared May 18-24 Safe Boating Week in Kansas, and Safe Kids Kansas, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks want to remind families to take extra steps to keep kids safe out on the water.

KDOT will resurface 38 miles of U.S. 50 in Stafford, Edwards counties

USD 428 proudly celebrates the careers of 15 teachers and staff members who are set to retire at the close of the 2023-2024 school year with an impressive 331 cumulative years of service to the field of education.

An Employee Recognition Banquet held on Wednesday, May 1 at the Great Bend Middle School celebrated retirees as well as educators who have completed 25 years in the profession. The evening also included the recognition of Don Learned with a ROSE Award.

“This group of dedicated teachers and staff have made a tremendous impact on education in their years of service,” said Khris Thexton, superintendent of USD 428, “This is always a special evening to pause and appreciate their career accomplishments as well as the cumulative ‘good’ they have done for our students, district, and community.”

Among the 2024 retirees, USD 428 honored classroom teachers, a building administrator, and several professionals who support classroom instruction and learning.

With a 41-year career in USD 428, Tim Friess has been at the helm of GBHS for nearly 3 decades, serving as assistant principal (12 years) and then principal (16 years). He also worked at Lincoln and Washington Elementary Schools for 11 years combined.

“Tim has a genuine heart for kids,” said Randy Wetzel, a former colleague at GBHS and USD 428 Board of Education Member.

Retiring teachers include Bill Cook, Tina Hiss, and Donna Nett from GBHS; Kelly Brack and Don Regehr from GBMS; Dara Touslee from Park Elementary; and Brenda McCulley and Bryan Scott from Riley Elementary.

Bill Cook, Great Bend High School science teacher, has taught for a total of 19 years, 14 years at GBHS teaching Chemistry I &amp; II. Throughout his career, Cook has enjoyed making connections with students in his classroom, with a favorite time being “when students come back to tell me how each ‘chem’ is in college because they were well-prepared for it in high school.”

Tina Hiss, has been a math teacher at GBHS for 45 years. Beyond the classroom, she’s a known champion and cheerleader for students, sharing that some of her favorite memories were state basketball championships, the “miracle on Morton” football game in 2019, and 11 consecutive Gold Awards for the Kay Club to which she was a sponsor, to name a few.

Donna Nett, celebrates a 40-year teaching career with 9 years at Great Bend High School as a Special Education Teacher. Nett has enjoyed working in a “forward-thinking district that helps students reach their full potential.”

For 31 Years, 25 of which was spent in Great Bend USD 428, Kelly Brack has equipped and encouraged students in the classroom, on the track, wrestling mats, football field, and more. Working as a physical education teacher at GBMS for the past ten years, Brack will depart with “many memories of students and athletes developing into fine men and women that our community can be proud of.”

Don Regehr, band instructor at GBMS, has inspired thousands of students during his 39-year career in teaching. Students in USD 428 have benefitted from his passion for music for ten years, in addition to Hill City, Central Burden District, and Ellinwood. Regehr has enjoyed taking students on band trips, to honor band opportunities, and working with other dedicated educators to provide enrichment opportunities for students. Regehr returned to USD 428 at a time when he would be able to teach his own children in his classes, saying, “it was a good move and I’ve met some great people here.”

Inspiring young learners, Dara Touslee has spent the most recent portion of her 37-year career in education in front of a kindergarten classroom. Touslee’s time in USD 428 also included 6th-grade, 4th-grade, as well as several instructional support roles including serving as the District Staff Development Coordinator.

“I’m glad to see the addition of Little Panthers Preschool,” Touslee said. “As a Kindergarten teacher, I see what a powerful impact early learning has on our students.”

Brenda McCulley celebrates 34 years as an educator, 31 in USD 428. McCulley’s legacy is visible in her account of what she’s witnessed in countless students over the years, “I’ve watched students make incredible gains, grow up, graduate high school, and become valuable parts of our community.”

A teacher, encourager, referee, and more, Bryan Scott has served Riley Elementary as a physical education teacher for 13 years. Through collaboration with PE teachers across the district, Scott appreciates the “measure of growth that’s visible as we work in harmony with the standards to teach students.”

Retirees from USD 428 support service include Debbie Jackson, food service (17 years); Dan Perez, maintenance (17 years); Tami Reeves, GBMS teacher assistant (6 years); Michelle Rose, Lincoln Elementary paraprofessional (23 years); Lori Thomas, BCSS paraprofessional (24 years); and Susan Wilson, maintenance (15 years).

Marking a significant contribution to USD 428 and 66 years in support of education, Don Learned was presented with the R.O.S.E. Award – Recognizing Outstanding Support of Education.

“Retiring from USD 428 in 1992 when he was principal of Roosevelt Jr. High School, Mr. Learned has worked an entire second career as a substitute teacher. He’s dependable, relates well to the students, and will undoubtedly be missed when we resume school next year.”

At the close of the summer, Learned and his wife Elsie will relocate to Texas to live with their daughter and family.

“You just have to stop and smile when you think of this group of retirees,” said Thexton. “As they set off to enjoy extra time with family, hobbies, or their next adventure, we know they carry forward their tireless dedication to the youth of our community. We express our deepest gratitude for their commitment and service to USD 428, and wish them the very best!”

An additional five educators were recognized for completing 25 years in the profession.

USD 428 celebrates retirees, milestone educators in Great Bend

Nearly 100 conservation district employees and partner agency staff gathered on May 8 &amp; 9 in Salina, KS for the annual Kansas Association of Conservation District Employees Organization (KACD-EO) annual meeting. According to KACD-EO executive board president Dana Schmelzle, "the annual event is fun and full of information for our employees from across the state."

As most conservation districts only have one full time staff member, days away from their local offices can be difficult to manage so the KACD-EO executive board makes sure to plan a full agenda for employees while they are together. Those in attendance heard presentations from the following partners:

· KACD Executive director Dan Meyerhoff, focused on the contribution agreement available for local conservation district and landowners across Kansas to benefit from through multiple partnerships KACD has established.

· KACD Assistant Director Amanda Scott, highlighted the many educational programs KACD has partnered with conservation districts on and the value of these programs.

· NRCS State Conservationist David Doctorian, gave an update from Kansas NRCS, and shared his appreciation for the partnership with KACD and the dedication of conservation district staff across the state. David indicated conservation district staff played a critical role in the implementation of the nearly 70 million dollars in conservation practices completed last fiscal year in Kansas.

· Kansas Department of Agriculture, Division of Conservation staff shared critical legislative updates and program delivery information directly related to implementation of the Kansas Water Plan and State Water Plan funds as administered through the state cost share programs.

Day two included presentations from KACD's marketing agency on the new services they can offer the conservation districts through their agreement with KACD. The Soil Health Alliance gave a soil health presentation and shared information on new climate smart incentives available. There are currently 26 climate smart initiatives that touch Kansas and KACD representative should be equipped to assist with information on many of them to help get local producers enrolled in various opportunities. Each county received a soil health bucket with supplies necessary for conducting various soil health assessments in the field.

The meeting serves as one of just two official times per year when all KACD-EO members come together for training and networking to stay up to date on programs, policies, and conservation delivery. As the meeting began employees went around the room introducing themselves with some being as new as one month on the job, to the Russell County District Manager who has served for 38 years and Pottawatomie County District Manager who has served 37 years. The employes each shared something they enjoy about the job and the reoccurring themes were "the farmers we get to work with" and "knowing we are making a difference in our communities for the future."

Conservation district employees organization meets

Kansas policymakers are abuzz about the recent defeat of a sports stadium tax in Jackson County, MO.&nbsp; Unfortunately, they’re saying all the wrong things.&nbsp; To paraphrase James Carville, “it’s affordable housing, stupid.”

If the tax had been approved, the money would have gone to renovate Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Super Bowl-winning Chiefs.&nbsp; The three eights cent sales tax extension would also have partially financed a new, downtown stadium for the Royals. Before the vote, nearly all publicity was on the Royals, who confused voters by&nbsp;repeatedly changing plans and venues&nbsp;for months prior to the vote.&nbsp; The opposition was led by KC Tenants, who had a&nbsp;simple message– why subsidize billionaire-owned, for-profit sports teams with a regressive sales tax that falls hardest on the poor, when Kansas Citians cannot find decent, affordable housing? This problem extends well into Kansas.

Few observers believe the defeat had anything to do with Arrowhead Stadium, or the Chiefs. Arrowhead will already be the&nbsp;site of renovations&nbsp;in advance of the 2026 World Cup, which will feature games played there. For additional improvements, the Chiefs and Royals now plan to&nbsp;seek support separately. The Chiefs have a stronger case, and they wish to remain at Arrowhead.

Of course, none of this kept the hype machine from springing into action.&nbsp; Proposals came from as far away as&nbsp;San Antonio, suggesting that the Chiefs move (they have a fiercely loyal fan base here and no plans to move).&nbsp; Ignoring the caution of Governor Kelly, Kansas Legislators also leapt into the act, suggesting an&nbsp;extravagant new Chiefs stadium in Wyandotte County,&nbsp;with a ludicrous plan to fund it with STAR bonds.&nbsp; Considering that the more modest Prairie Fire project in Overland Park recently&nbsp;defaulted&nbsp;on its STAR bonds, the idea that a multibillion dollar football stadium could be entirely financed this way is outrageous. Granted, Sporting Kansas City’s Children's Mercy soccer stadium in Wyandotte County was a successful STAR bonds project–but it is much smaller and only a fraction the cost of a new football stadium.&nbsp; When STAR bonds default, Kansas and/or local taxpayers are on the hook, as with Prairie Fire.

All this hype completely misses the point.&nbsp; The real story of that Jackson County vote is not about sports at all.&nbsp; It is about housing costs.

KC Tenants is a&nbsp;new group&nbsp;formed out of backlash against the KC area’s skyrocketing housing costs and substandard rental housing. Last year, they upset an establishment candidate to win a seat on the KCMO city council, and now this. The housing problem is also hitting hard in Kansas, and it is only a matter of time before KC Tenants or similar groups start popping up here. They secured a 58% “no” vote on the sports tax in Jackson County, despite being outspent by about 20 to 1.&nbsp;

Housing costs are shooting up all over Kansas.&nbsp; In the last year, they rose&nbsp;6.9% in KC,&nbsp;5.5% in Lawrence&nbsp;(where they were already high), and a&nbsp;whopping 10.9% in Wichita. In Topeka, a recent KSNT story found that housing costs have&nbsp;nearly doubled in the last two decades.&nbsp; In many places where affordable housing can still be found, it is in poor condition.&nbsp; This includes&nbsp;large swaths of rural Kansas.

Nationally, housing costs are rising&nbsp;twice as fast as wages.&nbsp; This drains money from other needs, lowers the quality of life, and worsens homelessness.&nbsp; Expect this new movement’s influence to keep spreading across both states, until policymakers start listening.

 </figure>Kansas policymakers are abuzz about the recent defeat of a sports stadium tax in Jackson County, MO.&nbsp; Unfortunately, they’re saying all the wrong things.&nbsp; To paraphrase James Carville, “it’s affordable housing, stupid.”If the tax had been approved, the money would have gone to renovate Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Super Bowl-winning Chiefs.&nbsp; The three eights cent sales tax extension would also have partially financed a new, downtown stadium for the Royals. Before the vote, nearly all publicity was on the Royals, who confused voters by&nbsp;repeatedly changing plans and venues&nbsp;for months prior to the vote.&nbsp; The opposition was led by KC Tenants, who had a&nbsp;simple message– why subsidize billionaire-owned, for-profit sports teams with a regressive sales tax that falls hardest on the poor, when Kansas Citians cannot find decent, affordable housing? This problem extends well into Kansas.Few observers believe the defeat had anything to do with Arrowhead Stadium, or the Chiefs. Arrowhead will already be the&nbsp;site of renovations&nbsp;in advance of the 2026 World Cup, which will feature games played there. For additional improvements, the Chiefs and Royals now plan to&nbsp;seek support separately. The Chiefs have a stronger case, and they wish to remain at Arrowhead.Of course, none of this kept the hype machine from springing into action.&nbsp; Proposals came from as far away as&nbsp;San Antonio, suggesting that the Chiefs move (they have a fiercely loyal fan base here and no plans to move).&nbsp; Ignoring the caution of Governor Kelly, Kansas Legislators also leapt into the act, suggesting an&nbsp;extravagant new Chiefs stadium in Wyandotte County,&nbsp;with a ludicrous plan to fund it with STAR bonds.&nbsp; Considering that the more modest Prairie Fire project in Overland Park recently&nbsp;defaulted&nbsp;on its STAR bonds, the idea that a multibillion dollar football stadium could be entirely financed this way is outrageous. It was just a year ago that the Pawnee County Jail started to help fill the gap between people who are incarcerated and their access to mental-health services. And Sheriff Scott King has noticed several benefits to inmates and staff alike.

“Having a registered nurse visit regularly helps us run a more efficient jail, which benefits inmates and staff,” King noted. “The nurse assists inmates with mental-health issues and medication management.

“This is a valuable resource and we have noticed quicker response times for mental- and medical-health needs. I hear positive feedback from staff members because the program helps them with their difficult jobs.”

The Jail Program has exceeded the sheriff’s expectations “because of the variety of mental-health services now available to inmates. We have the same problems faced by bigger jails and now we can match them with these local resources.”

The program has been available in Barton County since 2022 and further expansion is in the works. There is no cost to the inmate and the program is strictly voluntary.

The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation started the program after it applied for and received a grant from the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services. The Barton County Health Department also supported the program during its first year. The funds helped pay for staff and other expenses.

King noted he is grateful to The Center for providing access to the Jail Program in Pawnee County.

“The Center has always been a great partner,” he said. “We work together to support those who struggle with mental-health concerns – whether they be inmates or others in our community.

“I appreciate this partnership, which helps people in real-life crises.”

Shionta Gray, Community Support Services Director at The Center, noted that while Marci Klug, RN, provides nursing and case management services, she also has the opportunity to collaborate with the jail liaison.

“Marci communicates with jail personnel about inmates’ needs while they are in jail and find resources for them upon discharge,” Gray said. “The Center recommends to inmates that they follow-up on their concerns after release. We can help with follow-up services.

“One goal is to reduce recidivism and stop the revolving door,” she continued. “The state grant made it possible for us to tackle these issues. We are more than grateful.”

Gray noted she also “appreciates Sheriff King and his staff for allowing us to work with Pawnee County Jail personnel. We have a good working relationship and appreciate their support.”

Plans are in the works to expand the program into Rice County whenever possible. Currently, The Center provides as-needed services in the Rice County Jail.

“By talking with jail personnel and those who are incarcerated, we are supporting people who want services such as case management, therapy and medication,” Gray commented. “We also help with resources such as Medicaid, food stamps, housing and employment when they are released from jail.

“Then we reach out periodically to see if other resources are needed. We’re here to find support in our community. Recidivism may be reduced, while we de-stigmatize mental-health issues and improve quality of life.”

The Center’s Pawnee County Jail Program benefits inmates, staff

It’s no wonder some Fuller Industries employees were a tad jumpy when a thunderstorm rolled over the facility west of Great Bend last week. It brought back memories of the severe weather that pummeled the plant last July 16, causing extensive wind and water damage.

But, while some rooms remain makeshift offices and conference rooms with cabling dangling from the ceiling, and stacks of file cabinets, chairs and paperwork rise above the factory floor, repairs and improvements are taking place. The company took advantage of the situation to undertake a remodeling effort.

“The transformation that is taking place is amazing,” said Joe Mann, Fuller vice president and general manager. “It has been a long journey, but we are finally getting close to being finished.”

Even as the first phase of the front office work was wrapping up this week, employees were already moving into their new digs. Individual offices saw fixtures and decorations, and cubicles were occupied by busy staff members.

That storm last summer ripped much of the sprawling building’s roof off, leaving the interior exposed to the torrential rains. This left standing water, soggy ceiling tiles and ruined contents.

Work continues on the next phases of the renovations, he said. In the near future, everyone should be in their new offices.

“This has been a team effort out here,” Mann said. “Everyone has kept their spirts up, cooperated and made the best of a bad situation.”

Mann said there are plans to invite the public to see the revamped building once the renovations are complete. “These are the biggest improvements here since the plant was built over 50 years ago and we are really proud of what is being done.”

Fuller Industries storm recovery, remodeling efforts taking shape

Sometimes, the simplest things can help families stay within their monthly budget.

There are, for certain, common ways to save a few bucks this summer: turn down the air conditioner a tad, shut off the lights when you leave a room, watch less TV, draw the curtains when the sun is shining in.

But maybe there’s another way to think about saving money.

We’re coming into the longer days of summer, so think about what we can do outside that might not cost so much money, especially before it gets really hot. Maybe it’s just walking around the neighborhood, hanging out with your family outside in the yard. There are a lot of activities you can do instead of ‘doing something’ or ‘going somewhere’ that costs money.

During the recent COVID pandemic, the ‘Stay-cation’ became more popular, as families were forced to stay home rather than travel for vacation. The concept caught on, and even as the world opened up, many saw value in planning activities around their home base.

It’s a lot less stressful than traveling, and it’s a chance to unwind. Sometimes we schedule a vacation thinking we’ve got to go somewhere and we’ve got to do something and be active and that involves a lot of eating out and traveling. But there’s nothing wrong with staying around the house and doing some project, or just relaxing.

Another idea is visiting someplace close by that is unique and doesn’t involve much travel or eating out. We can always pack some food to take along especially for breakfast or lunch. And save the eating out for dinner.

Feeling time- or money-stretched is a sign that one needs to slow down and think about how they’re spending their time. It often can coincide with a boost to the family’s savings account.

When thinking about managing a family’s resources, it includes intentional, thoughtful choices that we all can make, but sometimes we get on auto pilot. Maybe we go to the grocery store and buy the same thing every week. That’s an opportunity for us to intentionally review what we’re regularly buying and eating.

There are rhythms and rituals. The rhythm of your day, the rhythm of your week and year. And then we have rituals, which are more like the daily things we do. It’s important to match the rhythms of your life to the rituals that you want in order to have a good life, and I think planning ahead can be very helpful to cut down on the stress in your life.

Food costs always seem to rise to the forefront when thinking of saving money. Planning menus each week can help consumers cut the bite of rising costs at the grocery store.

This is not all so serious that you can’t have any fun or you can’t have any treats. I think it gets back to intentionality of what it is you’re trying to accomplish.

There are ebbs and flows in managing money. We have different needs and wants. We have different income levels over time and across our lives. And so, it’s not like you make a plan that lasts forever. You plan and see how it works, and then adjust from there.

KOERNER: Tips to save on the family’s budget this summer

The 2024 Wheat Quality Council’s Hard Winter Wheat Tour across Kansas wrapped up on May 16. During the three days of wheat scouting, tour participants traveled six routes from Manhattan to Colby to Wichita and back to Manhattan. This year's tour hosted 70 people from 19 U.S. states in 18 vehicles while traveling across the state. Of those participants, 50 people had never been on the tour before.

The three-day average yield for the fields that were calculated was 46.5 bushels per acre. While an estimated 7.5 million acres of wheat were planted in the fall, the Kansas wheat crop varies in condition based on amount of moisture received. What Mother Nature has in store for the wheat crop still remains to be seen, but the tour captures a moment in time for the yield potential for fields across the state.

The official tour projection for total production of wheat to be harvested in Kansas is 290.4 million bushels. This number is the average of estimated predictions from tour participants who gathered information from 449 fields across the state. Based on May 1 conditions, NASS predicted the crop to be slightly lower at 267.9 million bushels, with a yield of 38 bushels per acre.

These fields are still two to four weeks from harvest. A lot can happen during that time to affect final yields and production.

Dr. Romulo Lollato, K-State Wheat and Forages Extension Specialist, reminded tour participants that the yield number is based on the potential that the crop has as of now, if things go well from now until harvest.

“It’s where we could get,” he said. If Kansas gets cool and wet weather during grain fill, it has the potential to reach that yield. However, there are still many things that could go wrong before that wheat makes it into the bin. He said he believes the 46.5 yield is on the high end.

“Variability is the name of the game this year,” Lollato said, recapping what tour participants saw this year: freeze damage, drought stress and stripe rust coming on after it was too late to spray fungicide.

The tour is sponsored by the Wheat Quality Council, which is a coordinated effort by breeders, producers and processors to improve wheat and flour quality. Dave Green, executive director of the WQC, said there are several goals of the tour. The first is for participants to make connections within the wheat industry. Another is to “describe the wheat as well as we can at the current point in time, not knowing what will happen over the next few weeks.” A third goal is to highlight the agriculture industry.

He said he believes the 46.5 yield is on the high end.“Variability is the name of the game this year,” Lollato said, recapping what tour participants saw this year: freeze damage, drought stress and stripe rust coming on after it was too late to spray fungicide.The tour is sponsored by the Wheat Quality Council, which is a coordinated effort by breeders, producers and processors to improve wheat and flour quality. Dave Green, executive director of the WQC, said there are several goals of the tour. The first is for participants to make connections within the wheat industry. Another is to “describe the wheat as well as we can at the current point in time, not knowing what will happen over the next few weeks.” A third goal is to highlight the agriculture industry.

If you build it, they will come. The famous line from "Field of Dreams" is often applied to any development project. In Great Bend, it can actually apply to baseball. Considerable renovations have been made to Al Burns Field at Veterans Park, home of the Great Bend Bat Cats. Barton Arts Movement (BAM) Co-Chair Andrea Bauer said the new dugout at the baseball field was a perfect spot for the next mural.

"We have a list of potential canvasses across Barton County," she said. "With any mural project, it's just a mixture of getting the funding, the artist, and the canvass to make all the magic happen. In talking with (Bat Cats General Manager) Roger Ward and just all the excitement around the Bat Cats, we felt like Al Burns Field was a great place to put a mural this season."

The mural will be located on the back of the visitor's dugout facing 17th Street Terr. Manhattan-based artist Layne Stafford will do the work. One mock-up of the proposed mural also includes a line from the classic Kevin Costner movie, though BAM is still working on a final design of the mural. Renovations at the field have included new outfield walls, a new scoreboard, and netting for a better fan experience. New dugouts were constructed in June 2022.

"That concrete is new, it's freshly primed and painted," said Bauer. "A mural will have a good amount of longevity there. We feel like the sun, it's just going to be a perfect way to highlight the vibrant activity that's happening at Vets Park and just really get people excited. It's 'Baseball Americana,' so it's not specific to any team. We feel like it's a theme that everyone can rally behind and get excited about."

The Great Bend City Council approved the project during last Monday's meeting. Bauer said BAM has applied for a Rural Murals Program grant through the Kansas Department of Commerce, though they will not know if they will be awarded funds until June. The grant does require a 50-percent match of local funds, and Bauer said donations of any size will gladly be accepted.

BAM planning baseball mural at Al Burns Field in Great Bend

USD 428 Food Service is ready to serve our community children this summer!&nbsp;

Each weekday, USD 428 Food Service will provide&nbsp;free meals&nbsp;for ALL Children 18 years of age and younger at elementary school locations from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the gyms. Children will be provided with a to-go lunch and a breakfast pack.&nbsp;

NEW in 2024&nbsp;- Permits will be issued to ALL program participants.&nbsp;Parents/Guardians will bring all children with them for their first pick-up at their preferred school location. For the remainder of the summer meal program, this allows parents/guardians permission to pick up meals without the children present. Parents/guardians MUST have this permit with them every day to pick up the meals, with no exceptions.&nbsp;

🎙Post Podcast: Great Bend Fire Chief Brent Smith

For the third year in a row, Member Services at Wheatland Electric Cooperative, Inc., (WEC) has received national recognition in the 2024 Spotlight on Excellence Awards program, sponsored by the Council of Rural Electric Communicators (CREC) and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA).

WEC’s member services team received a Silver Award in Best External Event for our 75th anniversary celebration at the 2023 Annual Meeting and a second Silver Award for Best Wild Card, for a life-size historical display showcasing co-op history at the same event.

The 2023 event held April 26 in Scott City, Kansas, and in seven additional remote meeting locations across WEC’s service territory, was attended in record numbers by co-op members across southwest and central Kansas.

In this year’s NRECA Spotlight Awards, WEC competed with just under 180 other electric co-ops, representing nearly 40 out of 50 states, which made more than 800 submissions into various award categories.

The theme of WEC’s award-winning event – “Feel the Power” – reflected 75 years of shared cooperative history with the membership. WEC received its official charter from the Rural Electrification Administration in 1948.

Member Services, with the help of additional cooperative employees, put together a special publication and life-size historical display in Scott City reflecting the co-op’s many decades of service to community and rich history as part of the event. Both the publication and exhibit featured historical documents and artifacts. A copy of the special publication (our 2023 Annual Report) is available online at www.weci.net/annual-meeting for viewing.

“I am extremely proud of Member Services and the work they’ve done to catalogue and document our rich co-op history,” said Bruce W. Mueller, WEC’s CEO/general manager. “Because of their strong communication efforts, we will be able to share our Wheatland story and carry out our cooperative mission for decades to come.”

The communications team is led by Alli Conine, director of member services and corporate communications, and also includes the following staff members: Samantha Garcia and Mary Hoisington, both member services and key accounts managers; and Shajia Donecker, social media specialist.

The WEC employees will be recognized at the CONNECT Conference in Baltimore, Md., a national conference for communications and marketing professionals in the cooperative electric industry in early May. Donecker will accept the award and participate in this annual professional development opportunity.

The annual Spotlight on Excellence Awards program recognizes the best communication and marketing efforts by electric cooperatives and related organizations nationwide. More than 800 entries were submitted across 20 different categories, including writing, graphic design, digital communications, campaign development and more. The esteemed judging panel includes members from the University of Missouri Columbia, as well as noted professionals in the fields of marketing, digital communications, and print media.

Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep pets away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache.  </ul>A&nbsp;Warning status&nbsp;indicates that conditions are unsafe for human and pet exposure.&nbsp; Contact with the waterbody should be avoided.When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:<ul>
 <li>Signage should be posted at all public access locations.</li><li>Inhalation of spray or aerosols may be harmful.</li><li>Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.&nbsp;</li><li>Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.&nbsp;</li><li>Water contact should be avoided.&nbsp;</li><li>Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.&nbsp;</li><li>Do not allow pets to eat dried algae.&nbsp;</li><li>If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.&nbsp;</li><li>Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.&nbsp;</li>
 </ul>A&nbsp;Watch status&nbsp;means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.&nbsp;When a watch is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:<ul>
 <li>Signage should be posted at all public access locations.</li><li>Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.</li><li>Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.</li><li>Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.</li><li>Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.</li><li>Clean fish thoroughly with potable water and eat fillet portion only.</li>
 </ul>Advisories are&nbsp;Lifted&nbsp;when cell densities and toxin concentrations dissipate to levels below the Watch thresholds.KDHE investigates publicly accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.&nbsp;If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.
