TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.9% in May. This is an increase from 2.8% in April and an increase from 2.6% in May 2023, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Labor.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 100 from April.

The unemployment rate in Barton County is up from 2.7 percent in April to 3 percent. The rate is also at 3 percent in Pawnee County and up slightly in counties across the region.

Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 300 over the month, while government increased by 400.

“Preliminary estimates for May indicate little change over the month,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen. “Total nonfarm job estimates increased by 100, the unemployment rate edged up to 2.9%, and the labor force participation rate held steady at 66.1%.”

Since May 2023 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 24,000. This change is due to an increase of 18,700 private sector jobs and an increase of 5,300 government jobs.

Jobless rate is up in Barton County and across the region

BARTON COUNTY—Three people were injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Sunday in Barton County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Ford Fiesta driven by Skyler L.&nbsp;Bergelt, 21, Fort Bliss, Texas, was eastbound&nbsp;on Kansas 156 seven&nbsp; miles northeast of U.S. 56.

The driver was attempting to pass a semi.&nbsp;&nbsp;The car and a westbound 2016 GMC Yukon driven by Dan A.&nbsp;Weippert, 71, Garden City,&nbsp;collided head-on on the north shoulder.

EMS transported&nbsp;Bergelt to Wesley Medical Center. EMS transported Weippert and a passenger Julie K. Weippert, 64, Garden City, to the hospital in Great Bend. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Barton CC students named to Dean’s List for spring 2024

Last year, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced that the Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (KSFMNP) would increase the value of coupons it gives to seniors from $35 to $50. As a result, more than 6,000 seniors participated in the program, and Kansas farmers redeemed $211,264 worth of benefits.

“We saw a lot of success with the program last year,” Courtney Koenig, KDHE Physical Activity and Nutrition Program Manager,” said. . “We want to use that momentum to keep moving forward.”

This year, the coupon redemption amount will stay at $50. Eligible seniors can apply for the KSFMNP from June 1 until Sept. 30. Coupons will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis, and seniors are encouraged to apply early.

The coupons will be sent in $5 increments and be delivered in one shipment. These coupons can be redeemed at participating farmers markets from authorized vendors, which will be identified with signage showing they are authorized to accept the coupons.

Building on the success of last year’s transition, the KSFMNP will continue offering digital coupons. The change was made to streamline the distribution process and make it more convenient for seniors to access their benefits.

Seniors are eligible if they are 60 years or older, or if they are at least 55 years old and a member of an Indian Tribal Organization. Eligible seniors must also have an annual gross household income (before taxes are withheld) at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level.

Eligible foods to purchase with the KSFMNP coupons from authorized farmers at participating farmers markets are defined as “fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, locally produced honey and cut herbs that are grown in Kansas.”

Kansas Senior Farmers Market program to remain at $50

MaKiah Webber, a 13-year-old Hoisington High School student, made a repeat appearance at this year’s YLinK conference. She is glad she did.

YLinK stands for Youth Leaders in Kansas, a statewide group that gathered recently at Hoisington High School for a full day of activities and educational sessions.

While Webber enjoyed many aspects of the conference, she said “Jake White was a great highlight at the event. Jake really brought energy, excitement and some valuable information, which I enjoyed very much. I thought the conference went well and was nicely done.”

Webber, a member of YLinK and Youth Crew, also noted the annual gathering is one way to learn how “to make a difference in my community and surroundings.

“I am glad I attended the event because I learned about a lot of new, important community engagement activities,” the ninth-grader said. “I also learned how to be a better leader overall, which I appreciate very much.”

Faith Sieliet, an 11-year-old Central Plains Elementary School student, also attended the conference after a friend encouraged her to participate.

“My friend and I had plans to hang out that same day, so she invited me to come,” Sieliet recalled. “She said it would be a lot of fun.”

Her friend was right, the sixth-grader noted. “It was so much fun and I got to meet lots of new people. The biggest highlight for me was all the presentations and learning lots of information on why it is beneficial to stay substance free.”

The experience also has encouraged Sieliet to become a Youth Crew member.

Ellie Foos, a Hutchinson High School senior, said the YLinK conference was worth the trip to Hoisington because “I was able to make new connections with youth from all across Kansas.”

Foos, a 17-year-old YLinK member, especially enjoyed taking “to the stage to share what our groups had practiced and planned. I learned a lot and built new connections.”

Youth Crew/Juvenile Services Barton County Youth Crew hosted and planned the entire event through Juvenile Services, with financial support from the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services.

“We appreciate the local and state support,” said Tyler Morton, Juvenile Services prevention advocate. “This event is important because it allows YLinK groups to share what they are accomplishing in coalitions all across Kansas. It is a big brainstorming session that offers a way for youth to receive encouragement from their peers.”

Jake White was invited to make his presentations because “some of our youth interacted with him at an event last year and really enjoyed his material,” Morton added. “We wanted someone who is young, someone with energy and someone who could deliver the message in a way that is attractive to this age group. Jake fit the bill.”

Fifty-seven young people attended the June 12 conference; approximately 25 were from out of town.

The biggest highlight for me was all the presentations and learning lots of information on why it is beneficial to stay substance free.”The experience also has encouraged Sieliet to become a Youth Crew member.Ellie Foos, a Hutchinson High School senior, said the YLinK conference was worth the trip to Hoisington because “I was able to make new connections with youth from all across Kansas.”Foos, a 17-year-old YLinK member, especially enjoyed taking “to the stage to share what our groups had practiced and planned. It is a big brainstorming session that offers a way for youth to receive encouragement from their peers.”Jake White was invited to make his presentations because “some of our youth interacted with him at an event last year and really enjoyed his material,” Morton added. “We wanted someone who is young, someone with energy and someone who could deliver the message in a way that is attractive to this age group. moderate drought with a small area of severe drought to our west in Ruch County
and a sliver in northwest Barton County.&nbsp;
This doesn’t reflect the rains occurring Tuesday. &nbsp;The six to ten-day outlook (June 25 to 29)
indicates a 60 to 70% chance of likely above normal temperatures and a 33 to
40% of leaning to above normal precipitation.&nbsp;
The eight to fourteen-day outlook (June 27 to July 3) indicates a 60 to 70%
chance of likely above normal for temperatures and a continued 33 to 40% chance
of leaning above normal precipitation.&nbsp; A
great forecast for wheat harvest overall but not for summer crops, especially
soybeans and alfalfa.

Until recent rains, the wheat
harvest was progressing rapidly here and in fact statewide was well ahead of
the five-year average.&nbsp; Overall, for the
state it looks like it will end up better than the last two years but well
above average.&nbsp; Weather, drought and late
season freezing temperatures combined with hail and wind damage, impacted
yields.&nbsp; Some areas suffered from wheat
streak mosaic virus and other diseases.&nbsp;
In spite of this there have been some good to excellent yields to go
along with abandoned fields and thirty bushel per acre and below yields.&nbsp; Today, what needs to be considered after
wheat harvest?

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; As
it’s only a bit past mid-June, those areas that have benefitted from recent
rains could consider double-cropping.&nbsp;
Here, milo is probably the best choice followed by feed crops for hay
and/or silage.&nbsp; Feed crops may be the
best option for those with cattle.&nbsp;
Soybeans are a possibility but a bit riskier and more susceptible to be
hurt by our typical late summer weather.&nbsp;
Items to consider are residual herbicide history, weed pressure, and
overall soil profile moisture.&nbsp; If weed
pressure allows, minimizing or even eliminating tillage is preferable.&nbsp; Sometime excessive crop residue can present
problems but not likely this year.&nbsp; 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If
not double-cropping, then weed and volunteer wheat control is critical with
recent rains.&nbsp; Again, preferably
chemically and without tillage.&nbsp; If
tillage is necessary, it is better, if possible, to control weeds with sweeps
and other tillage instruments like a field cultivator to leave as much residue
as possible on the surface.&nbsp; If weeds are
large and need more aggressive tillage, do it ASAP.&nbsp; Any subsequent tillage should be as shallow
as possible and leave reside on the surface.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If
going back to wheat in the fall, a soil test for general nutrient levels and pH
in say late July/Early August is a good idea to see where you are at.&nbsp; For nitrate-nitrogen, and sulfate-sulfur
(important on sandy ground), wait until early September, unless planting early
for grazing.&nbsp; Some of the heavy rainfall
events may have leached these nutrients.&nbsp;
Or you may have a good amount left.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If
waiting to plant a spring crop, sample this fall for all but nitrate and

What to Do After Wheat Harvest?

The Barton County Historical Society and the Quivira Chapter Santa Fe Trail Association, in a joint meeting, will host Britt and Linda Colle for the June program at 7:00 p.m., Monday, June 24 in the Ray Schulz Research Library at the historical society, 85 S. Hwy. 281, Great Bend. Admission is $5, while members and those under 16 are free. Memberships may be purchased at the door that night.

The Santa Fe National Historic Trail was a trail of commerce moving trade goods between the United States and Mexico from 1821 to 1880. The largest portion of the Trail was in Kansas. The Santa Fe Trail Association preserves, protects, and educates the public about this international highway. Ninety miles of the Trail are in the Quivira Chapter which covers McPherson, Rice, and Barton Counties in Kansas. There are many Trail-related sites within the Quivira Chapter with visible evidence from the days when the Trail was active. Join Linda and Britt Colle as they describe some of these sites and their Trail history.

Linda and Britt Colle are charter members of the Santa Fe Trail Association and the Quivira Chapter. Linda has been President of the chapter since 2006 and serves on the Santa Fe Trail Association Board of Directors. Britt is on the Board of Directors for the Quivira Chapter and serves as the Santa Fe Trail Representative for the Partnership of the National Trails System.

Colles to give Santa Fe Trail program in Great Bend

With more individuals mounting solar panels on their properties and the possibility of Acciona Energy constructing a solar installation n Barton County, Fuller Industries and its Fuller Custom Bruss are on the forefront of this emerging technology, said Joe Mann, Fuller vice president and general manager.

“We are always looking for ways to help companies that need our custom industrial brushes,” he said. “We’ve long served a wide variety of industries, including commercial baking, agricultural, woodworking, aerospace, printing, material-handling, mass transit, machine tool, and the list goes on and on. One of the more recent additions is the renewable-energy industry. Consider if you will, the challenge of the solar panel:”

The panels have a tempered glass face, laminated with an antireflective coating. The slick surface of uncoated glass, like a window, helps keep it clean and shed dust, so the surface of a photovoltaic cell is more prone to soiling, he said.

Solar panels are usually mounted at an angle, instead of vertically. This, of course, is all the better to catch the sun’s rays directly. As anyone who has a skylight set in a pitched roof can attest, it’s the vertical positioning of windows that help keep them clean.

"Because of the shadow, placing them beneath a shelter won’t work: Solar panels have to be out in the elements, and, exposed as they are, they get rained on, dust collects on that dull surface, and of course, passing birds occasionally find ways to hamper their effectiveness,” Mann said.

Plus every grain of dust or bird dropping on that glass surface makes the panel less efficient, and the effect is multiplied over time.

“Often in the solar energy industry, we see those economies of scale at work,” he said. “That is to say, if it’s a good spot to place 10 photovoltaic cells, then it’s a great spot to place a 100 of them,” he said. “That will add up to a fair amount of easy-to-soil anti-reflective glass. Multiply it across several locations and you’ve got yourself a cleaning job that can use more power than you’re generating.”

These are some of the considerations that were brought to Fuller by a client who needed a way to clean large numbers of solar panels efficiently, regularly, without leaving them soiled, but also without damaging or abrading the antireflective surface.

Solar panels cleaned with products from Fuller Industries

Great Bend Police patrol vehicle #82, a 2023 Ford Police Interceptor,
was involved in a motor vehicle accident on April 30, 2024 at the
intersection of 12th Street and Jefferson Street. The vehicle was
deemed a total loss. 

Police Chief Steve Haulmark said the officer driving was
not at fault, and the city’s insurance agreed to pay the majority of the
replacement.


"We reached out to a local Ford dealership here in town (Marmie Motors)," said Haulmark. "They did not have any replacement Police Interceptor vehicles and did not intend to be getting any anytime soon. We reached out to Superior Emergency Response Vehicles (SERV) who does our outfitting out of Andover. They had a vehicle in stock and gave us a quote for the replacement vehicle."

The cost from SERV for a 2024 Ford
Police Interceptor vehicle is $50,903.25. Insurance initially agreed to pay for
just over $17,000 but the city eventually received $44,102 from insurance. The remaining
funds of $6,801.25 will come from leftover insurance and trade-in money from
previous patrol vehicles.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

This year's Barton County Fair will again feature three nights of music for a variety of tastes. Rock tribute bands Revelation and Get Lucky will perform the classics from Journey and Loverboy on Friday, June 28. Great Bend native Jadynce Jean, coming off the recent release of her first single, "Little Miss Perfect," will provide country music on Saturday, June 29. Barton County Fair Association President Charles Atkinson is pleased to have a local artist on the stage.

"She started out on the free stage and did the national anthem for us, and opened for a couple of other acts," he said. "We're putting her on the stage and letting her have her own stage this year and be the headliner."

Music kicks off on Thursday, June 27 at 8:15 p.m. with Oklahoma-based Consumed by Fire. The Christian band has had several hits on the radio. Thanks to various sponsors, admission to the show is free. Friday's rock concert begins at 8 p.m. with $10 admission. Great Bend Redi Mix has paid admission for anyone 18 years of age and younger for the Jadynce Jean performance on Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets may otherwise be purchased for $10, and all attendees will receive a free non-alcoholic beverage for the concert. All three concerts will take place on the Peoples Bank and Trust Stage.

"We have moved it to behind the SRCA dragstrip under the trees," Atkinson said. "You can sit in your lawn chair, enjoy the shade, and enjoy the music right off the stage. It's a really nice venue. It's something we've been wanting to do for many, many years, and I think people will really enjoy it."

Attendees at all three concerts may bring their own chairs or rent one for the evening for $1.

🎙Post Podcast: Barton Co. Health Department staff

Embarrassing as it is to confess, I don’t wash my car as often as I should, especially since I frequently travel long distances in buggy areas. We recently returned from a week-long trek through insect-filled territory with predictable results. Squashed bugs covered the front of the car.

From my perspective, this meant more work. I needed to gather scrub rags and detergent in order to apply serious elbow grease. From a couple of little birds’ perspectives, our grill offered gourmet delights. Looking out the window the other day, I spied two sparrows working diligently at something around the slatted metal. Upon closer inspection, these opportunists were cleaning up dried bugs. I’d delivered a feast to their doorstep.

Lately newspapers are full of articles of other examples of opportunistic feeders. Swimmers and surfers off an American beach recently discovered this the hard way. As they splashed and kicked, hungry sharks zeroed in on their movement and noise. Since bait fish usually occupy those waters, the sharks apparently thought the movement signaled dinner time. I can imagine the surprise on the parts of both the swimmers and the sharks. Neither expected that encounter. While a couple of the swimmers required surgery, thankfully, no one died in that case of mistaken identity.

Sharks are not the only creatures showing up for unexpected meal encounters. We once visited an area in Wyoming that suffered an early freeze followed by summer drought. As a result, bears that typically hang out in berry patches and the like in the mountains, showed up at Fido’s back-door dog dish.

One lady told me her sister left her back door open while she did chores. As she carried boxes from one area to another, her dog started barking frantically. Curious, she visited the dining room to see what inspired the noise. Imagine finding a bear cub had wandered into the kitchen to investigate dining options. Thank goodness she frightened him out of the house with wild gestures and screeches before his mom came looking for him.

Around the same time, in southern Colorado, a bear wandered into a bottling plant where it discovered the raspberry-flavored ice tea vat. Mental picture triggered dozens of potential ice tea commercials. It reminded me of vintage Coca Cola ads starring a big, white polar bear. This bear story offered a case of life imitating art.

Wild animals aren’t the only creatures to take advantage of perfect opportunities. I’ve never known a dog to miss a chance to clean up under a toddler. Any dog worth its keep knows where to find the good stuff. I once watched a lab snatch ice cream off a little girl’s cone as the distracted tyke waved her cone around. Its owner struggled to scold the messy-faced pooch for doing what came naturally.
