As people grow older, maintaining physical health becomes increasingly vital and not just for longevity, but for quality of life. One often-overlooked aspect of health in the aging population or even younger populations that are sedentary due to lifestyle or injury is balance. Experts are now emphasizing the importance of balance exercises as a key part of healthy aging, helping prevent falls, preserve independence and improve overall well-being.

According to the World Health Organization, falls are the second leading cause of accidental injury deaths worldwide. Among older adults, the risk is especially high. In the United States alone, one in four adults over age 65 falls each year, resulting in over three million emergency room visits.

Balance naturally declines with age due to changes in vision, muscle strength, joint flexibility, and even cognitive function. But the good news is balance can be trained, just like strength or endurance.

Maintaining good balance isn’t just about avoiding falls. It’s essential for everyday tasks like walking, bending, climbing stairs, or even reaching into a cabinet. When balance begins to deteriorate, so does confidence. Many older adults start to restrict their activities for fear of falling, which can lead to a sedentary lifestyle, muscle atrophy, and social isolation.

Loss of balance reduces mobility and independence, which then impacts mental health. Simple exercises such as standing on one leg, walking heel-to-toe, or practicing tai chi can dramatically improve stability over time. Physical therapists often recommend incorporating balance practice into daily routines. An example would be brushing your teeth while standing on one leg or putting on socks or shoes while standing on one leg.

This topic discussion would not be complete without touching on other factors such as nutrition, seeing your healthcare provider, and proper footwear. Eating healthy foods and including many nutrient rich foods in your diet can affect mental and physical health. Prioritize whole foods, foods with no food labels, or foods with only a few ingredients. A visit to your healthcare provider can manage changes in your eyes, medications, and balance assessments. Finally, wearing proper footwear can help with any foot conditions or prevent future problems.

Prevention can be the key to not just longevity but longevity with quality of life. Balance training is a small investment that pays enormous dividends to help preserve independence and dignity.

KOERNER: Why practicing balance is important

Barton Community College and the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce will host the fourth annual “After Hours” event from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 21 at Camp Aldrich, featuring cinnamon rolls, cider, chili, wine and beer, and multiple giveaways.

Area community members, Great Bend Chamber members, and invited guests are all welcome to join the autumn-inspired celebration. Giveaways will include multiple “cozy fall baskets” of goodies, reserved season basketball tickets for the 2025-2026 season with reserved parking, and other Barton gear.

The event will feature kid-friendly activities, including a pumpkin decorating station, Bart the Cougar-themed fall coloring pages, and a variety of outdoor games. Bart himself will be on hand throughout the evening for high-fives and photo ops, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Stops in Claflin and Hoisington were on the itinerary last Tuesday as the Barton County commissioners continued their Travel 389 initiative. The program, aimed at giving the commission the chance to get out and meet face to face with residents and businesses across the county's 389 miles of roadways, started last week in Hoisington.

Included in Tuesday’s trip were: Squeegy’s Bar and Grill, the site of a planned USD 112 Central Plains School District daycare facility (Central Plains High School), Central Prairie Co-op, Millers of Claflin, Cheyenne Bottoms Armory/Quilting by Vickie, Bailey’s Food Bin and Front Street Merchants, all in Claflin; and Ehler Chevrolet and B&amp;B Metal Arts in Hoisington.

The next stop will be Ellinwood this Tuesday. Residents interested in being included can contact the Administration Office at 1400 Main Street, Suite 108, Great Bend, by calling 620-793-1800, or by contacting their commissioner.

In other Barton Commission action last week:

A $10,000 Façade Improvement Grant for the Moses Properties LLC-owned office building at 2015 Forest Avenue in Great Bend was approved by the Barton County Commission Tuesday morning. In addition to Moses’ office, it houses several other businesses.

The grant will fund improvements to the back of the building, which is part of the downtown Great Bend consumption district used for community events such as Great Bend Economic Development Inc.’s Final Fridays on Forest. The district roughly covers the area between Forest and Lakin, and between Main and Williams.

Commission Chairperson Tricia Schlessiger, District 4, said this will make a good enhancement to the growing consumption district. County Administrator Matt Patzner presented the grant request on behalf of Earl Moses. The commission directed the Commission Chair to sign the grant agreement and instructed the County Administrator to encumber the award from the General Fund.

The commission approved the purchase of a portion of four vacant lots in Great Bend for $25,050. The land, located between the Health Department and the Barton County Annex, was purchased from the Marilyn J. Kopke Revocable Trust and the Larry L. Kopke Revocable Trust.

The county was approached by representatives for the trusts to purchase the land, which is in the 1800 block of Lakin, on the south side of the street behind the Golden Belt Cinema 6 theater, said Patzner. The cost of the land will be paid from the Capital Improvement Fund.

“This is a good investment for Barton County for the future,” said Commissioner Duane Reif, District 1. It was noted that the commission doesn’t normally like to take property off the tax rolls, but there is potential here, and there is the option of selling back to a public buyer in the future.

The county is eying the site for storage, parking or other uses. But, “nothing is set in stone,” Patzner said.

The agreement for the purchase and sale of real estate was approved by the commission, with closing scheduled for Oct. 15. The county will also be responsible for additional expenses, including title insurance, inspections and closing costs.

A resolution adopted by the commission on Tuesday authorized an updated functional classification map for county and township roads.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) periodically works with counties across the state to update these maps, said Barton County Engineer Barry McManaman. The maps classify three types of rural roads not on the state highway system: Major collectors (heavily traveled blacktops), minor collectors (blacktops that see considerable traffic) local roads (mostly gravel roads).

There are just a handful of minor changes to road designations that will show up on maps, but “they don’t really change anything,” McManaman said. There are no changes for nearby residents nor in the level of service, and the county will continue to maintain the blacktops and the townships will maintain the gravel roads.

McManaman worked with KDOT staff to identify changes to the map that would more accurately reflect the level of service for the roads. The commission’s approval of the resolution and the updated map was required by KDOT. The resolution will have no impact on the county's budget.

Barton Commission approves façade improvement; heads to Ellinwood Tuesday

The Volga German Centennial Association has released the full schedule of events for the 2025 Oktoberfest Hays, a two-day festival celebrating the region's deep-rooted history, heritage, and homecoming traditions.

The free-to-attend event is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 26, and Saturday, Sept. 27, in Municipal Park, located in downtown Hays.

The celebration begins Sept. 26, with grounds opening at 9 a.m.

Official festivities commence with the Opening Ceremony at 10:30 a.m., followed by the traditional Tapping of the Keg at 11 a.m.

The afternoon is dedicated to a series of spirited, adults-only competitions, with registration for all games starting at 1 p.m. at the Oktoberfest HQ tent.

At 2 p.m., contestants will test their strength in the Masskrugstemmen, a traditional stein-holding contest.

This is followed by the Deutch Hops Contest at 4 p.m., a timed relay race.

At 5 p.m., teams of two will compete in the OktoberFEAST Contest.

The first day of the festival will conclude at 7 p.m.

The festivities continue Saturday, Sept. 27, starting at 10 a.m.

The morning will be highlighted by the Fort Hays State University Homecoming Parade at 11 a.m., followed by the official Oktoberfest Day 2 Welcome at 11:45 a.m.

The afternoon will feature a Cornhole Tournament at noon. Registration at 11 a.m. at Oktoberfest HQ.

Family-friendly activities are a focus for Saturday, with kids' games and entertainment running from 1 to 4 p.m., including a German Freeze Game, Pumpkin Pass, and a Pumpkin Rolling Contest.

Bounce houses will also be available for children on Saturday only, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A major new addition to this year's festival is the inaugural “Battle of the Bierock,” sponsored by Lewis Automotive of Hays.

The competition, which invites Oktoberfest vendors to vie for the title of "Best Bierock," is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

"We are incredibly excited to introduce the 'Battle of the Bierock' to this year's festivities," said Emily Knowles, event coordinator. "It's a great way to celebrate a beloved local food and add a new layer of friendly competition and bragging rights to the event. We can't wait to see which vendor is crowned as the winner."

Live entertainment will be featured throughout the two-day event. Friday's musical guests include the Ron Werth Band, German Tuba, Rice County Line, and Steel Skarecrow.

On Saturday, the Ron Werth Band and Rice County Line will return to the stage.

In addition to the scheduled events, attendees can enjoy activities throughout the park, including the Beer Puppeteers, a High Striker game, and Mug Toss.

"Oktoberfest is a time-honored tradition in Hays, and we are proud to continue to host this event for the community," said Amanda Rupp, president of the Volga German Centennial Association. "We invite everyone to come out and enjoy the food, music, and festivities as we celebrate our shared heritage. There truly is something for everyone to enjoy."

The 2025 Oktoberfest will close at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Barton County Sheriff's Office Booking activity (9/19-9/21)

Great Bend High School (GBHS) Government students had the opportunity to experience democracy in action during a Civic Engagement presentation and mock election held last week. The event, presented by the League of Women Voters, offered students valuable insights into the voting process and the importance of civic engagement.

A highlight of the day was a mock election demonstration led by Barton County Clerk Bev Schmeidler and her staff. Using electronic voting machines, students gained hands-on experience with the same technology they will encounter at the polls, making it a meaningful “practice run” before they become eligible voters. While the ballot question wasn’t a serious matter,

Students from Michelle Moore and Carol Pfannenstiel’s government classes at GBHS participated in the event, along with visiting government students from Ellinwood High School.

“This experience is about more than just casting a ballot on the light-hearted topic of cat or dog,” said Moore, GBHS Government Teacher. “It’s about preparing students to be informed, engaged citizens who understand the role they play in shaping their communities and their future.”

The timing of the event provided a strong connection to Freedom Week, Constitution Day, and National Voter Registration Day, helping students see how classroom learning ties directly to their civic responsibilities.

change except the little bit of increased moderate drought in North Central and
Northeast Kansas with an increase in abnormally dry conditions along the
Missouri border.&nbsp; The six-to ten-day
outlook (September 22 to 26) indicates a 70 to 90% chance of likely above
normal for temperatures and normal to slightly below normal for precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (September 24
to 30) indicates a 60 to 70% chance of likely above normal for temperatures and
normal for precipitation.&nbsp; Temperatures
will help fall crops head to harvest but not great for winter wheat
establishment.&nbsp; 

If
you have paid any attention to the progress of our 2025 summer crops, the title
may seem a bit odd.&nbsp; This is especially
true if you follow the USDA reports on the acreage and yield potential of corn
and soybeans.&nbsp; The Pro Farmer crop tour
agreed.&nbsp; Acreage is up in corn over one
million acres from earlier estimates, well over 90 million acres
nationwide.&nbsp; Time will tell if this needs
adjusting.&nbsp; Soybean and corn yields are
projected to be in record territory though they have backed off a tick.&nbsp; Harvest is just starting, and they are seeing
some lower-than-expected yield with some diseases.&nbsp; With all that, we are still dealing with a
large crop for both in billions of bushels.&nbsp;
Grain sorghum is more of a regional crop and receives less attention
outside of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas but the crop looks good.&nbsp; Focusing on Kansas, this is for the entire
state the best overall looking summer row crop yield potential in years.&nbsp; In our area overall, this appears to be the
best-looking dryland corn, soybean, and milo crop in years.&nbsp; As in even the best years, heat and dry
conditions did impact yield some, especially for soybeans.&nbsp; And the wheat crop, while not fantastic was
acceptable.&nbsp; So, what’s the problem?

Actually,
there are several.&nbsp; Prices are low,
especially considering input prices, which spiked a bit more with the tariff
uncertainty.&nbsp; Low grain prices are bad
for feedlots, ethanol producers, and other end users but not for
producers.&nbsp; And low prices normally help
push exports.&nbsp; Storage is tight.&nbsp; In some states, producers often have a fair
amount of on farm storage.&nbsp; It’s not that
there isn’t any in Kansas, but our production is designed more for central
grain storage locations.&nbsp; Simply put,
here and across much of the Corn Belt, there isn’t enough storage for the grain
coming in.&nbsp; There are reports that in
Kansas, some co-ops are warning they may not take milo as they are concerned
about corn and soybean storage.&nbsp; They
would like to move the grain, but many producers don’t want to sell at the
price offered.&nbsp; This normally, and
already is, resulting in increased storage prices which are currently not
cheap.&nbsp; If you are paying ten cents or
more a bushel for storage, the costs add up in a hurry.

Finally,
with all the “tariff wars”, sales of grain (wheat, corn, and especially
soybeans) for export are down significantly.&nbsp;
Add in the elimination of most USAID grain for countries with food
shortages and it’s significantly hurting producers in the pocketbook.

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce hosted a Ribbon Cutting and Chamber After Hours Event on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025, honoring Hammeke Electric Inc as they marked an incredible milestone of 25 years in business. The celebration culminated in a Chamber After Hours event, where attendees gathered for a special giveaway and recognition of the company’s achievements.

Entries were earned through acts of generosity and community support. Hammeke Electric Inc celebrates 25-year anniversary with Great Bend Chamber events

In conjunction with Freedom Week and Constitution Day, 3rd-grade students at Great Bend’s Jefferson, Park, and Riley Elementary Schools participated in a virtual mock trial hosted by Olathe Public Schools. The unique learning opportunity even featured a special guest appearance from U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch and U.S. Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas.

Students were introduced to the U.S. Constitution’s core tenets and gained an overview of how the three branches of government work together. Once the mock trial began, students transitioned into the role of “jury,” carefully observing the legal process for a fictional case involving an alleged student running in the halls.

The event brought government concepts to life in a way that was both fun and meaningful, while also aligning with the Kansas History, Government, and Social Studies (HGSS) standards approved by the Kansas State Board of Education for third grade.

“This activity was important because it brought parts of our classroom learning, ‘How America Works,’ to life in a way that resonated with the students,” said Casey Hatzenbuehler, 3rd Grade Teacher at Riley Elementary. “They really enjoyed being able to deliberate after each witness during the trial and then having a say in the final verdict. Our group was split, but then a student restated a piece of evidence that supported their opinion. The students considered this and decided ‘not guilty.’ They felt like they were a true part of a system they were learning about.”

The unique learning opportunity even featured a special guest appearance from U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch and U.S. Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas.Students were introduced to the U.S. Constitution’s core tenets and gained an overview of how the three branches of government work together. Once the mock trial began, students transitioned into the role of “jury,” carefully observing the legal process for a fictional case involving an alleged student running in the halls.The event brought government concepts to life in a way that was both fun and meaningful, while also aligning with the Kansas History, Government, and Social Studies (HGSS) standards approved by the Kansas State Board of Education for third grade.<figure>

Our group was split, but then a student restated a piece of evidence that supported their opinion. BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a case of arson and vandalism at the St. Anne’s Catholic school in Olmitz have made an arrest.

Just after 5 p.m. on July 10, the Barton County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to St. Anne's Catholic School in the rural Barton County community of Olmitz, located approximately 17 miles northwest of Great Bend, for a report of vandalism, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

Deputies found the school had been broken into. Unknown persons entered the building causing extensive damage to the interior of the building and other property inside the building.

 The Sheriff’s Office has been conducting investigation that involved out-of-state agencies as well as the Russell Kansas Police Department and Russell County Sheriff’s Office.

On September 17, 2025, the Russell County Sheriff’s office arrested 30-year-old Matthew Clampit on requested charges of criminal damage to property, arson and burglary of a non-dwelling for his involvement in the case. 

Clampit is being held in lieu of a $20,000 bond. Three more suspects have been developed, and arrest warrants are being sought by the Barton County Attorney’s office. Further arrests are expected in this case, according to Sheriff Bellendir

Suspect jailed for racist graffiti, vandalism at Barton Co. school

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information (LMI) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in August. This is unchanged from 3.8% in July and an increase from 3.7% in August 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas increased to 67.0% in August, according to a media release from the KDOL.

The unemployment rate in Barton County remained steady at 4.2 percent in August. The rate in Pawnee County is up from 3.6 percent in July to 3.9 percent in August.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 4,700 from July. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 1,300 over the month, while government decreased by 3,400. The largest job gains in the private sector were in&nbsp;leisure and hospitality&nbsp;(+600 jobs). The largest decrease was in trade, transportation, and utilities&nbsp;(-2,100 jobs).

On Thursday, Sept. 18, Cornerstone Automotive &amp; Tire, LLC welcomed the community to a Chamber Coffee and Ribbon Cutting in celebration of its transition to new local ownership under Darin Hertel. More than 60 people gathered to hear Hertel share his vision for the business while enjoying homemade biscuits and gravy. Guests also had the chance to win door prizes, with three lucky attendees taking home a free oil change.

Hertel is no stranger to Cornerstone Automotive and Tire LLC. He has served as one of the shop managers for over two years, building strong relationships with both customers and technicians. With a background that includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Communication, an Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology, and extensive experience in agriculture and automotive industries, Hertel brings a balance of technical know-how and business leadership to his new role.

Looking ahead, Hertel plans to remodel the customer-facing areas of the shop, including the front entrance, counter, and waiting room, creating a more welcoming space. He also intends to invest in updated equipment and expand staffing to keep up with demand. “Right now, we’re scheduling almost three weeks out,” Hertel explained. “That’s a good challenge to have, but I want to create a shop where customers can get quicker services, like oil changes and tire work, with more convenience.”

Currently, Cornerstone Automotive &amp; Tire employs nine team members, including seven mechanics, two of whom are students gaining hands-on experience while pursuing their education. Hertel is also actively looking to grow his team to better serve customers.

Being friendly is always a winning bet. For Eisenhower fourth grader Rylee Woods, that winning behavior turned into $100 when she was selected as Eagle Media's third Make a Difference winner in the contest presented by OPI.

"I make a difference by being friends with everyone," Rylee said.

All K-6 students in Barton County are eligible for the contest. In addition to the $100 from OPI, Rylee also took home goodies from the contest's other sponsors. As a weekly winner, Rylee will now be one of just a few finalists for another $100 in the September monthly drawing. Mrs. Gates, Rylee's teacher, would also win $100 if Rylee is selected in the monthly contest. She concurs that Rylee is a positive influence in the classroom.

"She's a very great friend, and she's always making sure everyone is included and has someone to be with," Gates said.

UPDATE Cardinal Football game cancelled

When a local woman moved into Aster Estates in Great Bend nearly three years ago, “she improved overnight,” said her daughter.

Since September is World Alzheimer’s Month, the daughter wants to share her family’s experience to raise awareness not only about Alzheimer’s but other types of dementia as well.

The woman’s mom is 90 years old and suffers from a form of dementia.

“Mom had been in an area swing-bed medical facility for more than 30 days,” the daughter recalled. “Mom went from there to Aster Estates and improved overnight. This was the hardest thing I have ever done but it wasn’t safe for mom to go home.”

Since Aster Estates wants to provide a homey atmosphere, virtually everything in her room is hers – things that mean something to her, such as furnishings and photos.

The daughter cited a number of reasons Aster Estes was the answer for her family. There is a lot of one-on-one interaction with the staff; visitors are welcome anytime; “meals are great”; and residents are free to go on outings.

“When mom moved into Aster Estates, she was encouraged to walk to the dinner table, and get in and out of her chair. Of course, there was help when she needed it but she quickly learned she could still do some things on her own. She was allowed to get better.”

Pam Lewis Pam Lewis, registered nurse, owns Aster Estates, which is a home-plus residence at 155 NW 10 Ave., with a staff of nine, including certified nurse’s aides, certified medication aides and “one helper.”

Currently, there are six residents, four of whom have short-term memory loss, which is the most common symptom of dementia.

“When dementia is a factor, people can lose their basic skills very quickly,” Lewis emphasized. “When they come to us from other settings, they are often surprised they can still accomplish quite a bit.

“They can tend to their personal hygiene and get dressed. These activities are important for emotional well-being and eye-hand coordination. If it takes 30 minutes to get dressed, that is okay. We know this is not possible in a family home or other settings.”

Families become concerned about dementia when they notice laundry isn’t being done, there is not much food in the house, and their loved one is eating only snacks and cereal, Lewis outlined.

“If they grab a snack, they may get full but nutrition suffers. They don’t have as many reserves as they did when they were younger.”

Lewis noted a few other Aster Estates’ features: homecooked meals; transportation to appointments when necessary; outings are scheduled regularly, depending on residents’ likes and dislikes; and reading with one another and discussing the topics at the dinner table.

“One thing everyone seems to enjoy is watching Wheel of Fortune,” Lewis noted. “It helps with words and, because many are fans of the show, it brings back memories.”

Aster Estates is a completely remodeled 3,600-square-foot residence, located just outside Great Bend’s north city limits. There is a lot of space for indoor and outdoor activities.
