The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, May 27th shows marked improvement for the state with an increase from 19 to 30% of the state totally out of dry conditions. Only 1% is in severe drought with the portion in moderate drought cut in half to 17%. Much of our area has improved to just abnormally dry with the northeastern/north central part of Barton County still listed in moderate drought. This doesn’t include the Wednesday rain. The six-to ten-day outlook (June 3 to 7) indicates a 33 to 50% chance of leaning above normal temperatures and a 40 to 50% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (June 5 to 11) indicates normal for temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation. Good for summer crops and the maturing wheat crop. The rains of the last week benefitted some of the later wheat while the winds and wet soil did knock some wheat over.

Today is the last in the series of parts of the USDA. As the current administration seeks efficiencies through downsizing, many of us really don’t have more than a general understanding of what agencies do. We have already discussed the NRCS and APHIS. Today, a very brief overview of some of the rest.

· Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) – works on domestic and internation marketing of commodities and works to ensure fair trade practices.

· Agricultural Research Service (ARS) – This is exactly what you think. It’s the research arm of the USDA and helps find solutions to problems in agricultural production. It partners with local and state governments/institutions (think K-State) and private companies.

· Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) – works to ensure a safety healthy food supply through inspection and testing. There are labs, some have closed recently, across the US as well as inspectors.

· National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) – This may seem wonky, but NASS ensures with have the best data available regarding all aspects of food production. There isn’t room here to list all the important uses of this data.

· Rural Development (RD) – to maintain agricultural production we need people and not just producers. RD provides financial and technical resources to maintain and improve the quality of rural life.

· Risk Management Agency (RMA) – Agriculture has a great deal to do with mitigating risk. The RMA provides financial tools and information regarding financial risk and much of this is provided through the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation.

There are more including the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Forest Service, Economic Research Service, and the Food and Nutrition Service.

Barton Ag Instructor Dr. Vic Martin - More important USDA agencies

Last year, when the Great Bend Public Library received a $10,000 grant
from the American Library Association to improve accessibility toward the
building, initial thoughts were to use the funds for an ADA restroom. After
holding community meetings to gather input from the public, Library Director
Maribeth Shafer said the library will now utilize the grant on improving the
main entrance. 

Receiving additional grants, the library will be able have a
chair lift installed by the steps on the north side.


"Both of our ramps are little too long and too steep because they were built in 1972," said Shafer. "This will make them ADA compliant and accessible for anyone that has a walker, stroller or a wheelchair. We're very excited about that."

Shafer added the library is set to receive a technology grant to assist
programming for all ages. The tech grant will enhance online safety and
workforce training.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Celebrate the spirit of American freedom with a night of red, white, and blue racing action as the Myers Racing Engines Bullring 305 Nationals thunders into Rush County Speedway, located at the Rush County Fairgrounds in La Crosse on Friday, June 6. The event is promoted by William Nusser of Larned.

Myers Racing Engines thundering into Rush Co. Speedway 

Barton Community College will host a school bus, defensive driving, and CPR training course July 21-24.

This comprehensive, week-long program equips individuals to become certified school bus drivers or strengthen their transportation safety skills.

Participants will complete Class B CDL theory, earn school bus and passenger endorsements, and receive an AAA Defensive Driving certification along with CPR and first aid training.

The program costs $849. All participants must arrive on the first day with a CDL learner’s permit, a valid DOT physical card, and proof of a negative drug test. Final testing will take place on July 25.

Barton CC offering safety training for future school bus drivers

The Kansas Oil &amp; Gas Hall of Fame and Museum in Great Bend was
created in 1990 as a way to preserve the history of the oil and gas industry. Along
with seeing and interacting with the geology and drilling processes of the oil
and gas production, the museum has been available for private party and meeting
rentals. 

Kansas Oil &amp; Gas Museum Director Dee Volpert said demolition of an
older building at the museum is underway and construction of a new events
center will begin later this year.
&nbsp;

"One of our board members, about a year ago, mentioned the idea," said Volpert. "The building we took down, just wasn't safe. It hasn't been part of our tour for a long time, but there was a lot of good equipment in there. We put the equipment in storage and tore down the building."

The new building will be larger for events space and meetings and will include
a kitchenette.


"We right now we just have the Biggs building that we rent out for events," said Volpert. "It doesn't have a kitchen or anything like that. This will be more user friendly for the meetings space and events space."

Volpert said the construction company wants to begin building in August and
hopefully have the new addition complete in December, weather permitting.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Oil & Gas museum in Great Bend constructing new events space

Barton Dance Theatre’s popular “Dancing with the Cougars” classes have returned for the summer with a line dancing class from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. June 5 in Studio 34.

Barton’s Dance Instructor and Fine and Performing Arts Coordinator said this one-time community dance class teaches classic and current line dances of multiple styles to different genres of music. &nbsp;

“I’m now frequently asked when we are going to have another Dancing with the Cougars class because people are looking for opportunities to socialize and dance together in a positive atmosphere,” she said. “The environment in these community classes is that it doesn’t matter if you dance a lot or never. The goal is all about just moving and having a good time.

Tariffs, low water levels in the Panama Canal and even sea-faring pirates.

When one pictures Fuller Industries Inc. surrounded by miles of wheat fields west of Great Bend, they probably don’t connect it with these high sea hazards. But they are very much a factor for the commercial cleaning supply maker as it sources the raw materials it needs, said Ginny Parsons, Fuller’s procurement specialist.

“People have no idea,” she said. “There are just so many things that are out of your control.”

These all can impact costs for Fuller and how those costs affect pricing for their global customer base. And, possibly worse, shipping bottlenecks abroad and at sea can create production delays and customer service headaches.

That is why it was such a huge win for the company when Brenntag, traveled to Great Bend to meet with Fuller and a tour of its facility Tuesday. Brenntag is a domestic producer of the surfactant that is a key ingredient in hand soaps that reduce the liquid's surface tension, and provides cleaning and sudsing properties.

“This is a big deal for us,” Parsons said. “They requested to meet with us.”

Fuller makes a lot of hand soap. On average, it goes through 44,000 pounds of the surfactant each month, making enough soap to fill 5 million dispensers each year.

“When I’m sourcing these materials, I always try to source locally. We think America first,” she said. “But we have to look at our bottom line and the items from overseas were just so much less expensive.”

That is, until world economics, geopolitics and piracy hit close to home. “Now, that is becoming less of an issue,” she said.

Costs are starting to level out and looking to an American supplier lessens supply chain woes.

A better option Currently, surfactants come into Fuller in 250-gallon plastic totes. Often, the viscosity, or thickness, of the liquid contents is like that of maple syrup, Parsons said.

First, the material is super concentrated and if it is cold, it gets even thicker. This means the totes have to be placed in giant ovens and warmed so it thins and will flow through the hoses on the production lines.

“This all takes time and affects production time and labor costs,” Parsons said. “But, with the lower cost, we could justify this.”

Brenntag is a backup vendor for Fuller now, providing the product if there are problems with other sources. But, it also offers an option that arrives ready to run smoothly.

"Finding better ways to store raw materials and compound our finished goods is where we rely on or partners like Brenntag.,” she said.

Great Bend business working to improve soap production

The new x-ray room at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital (PVCH) is home to equipment with built-in safety features, as well as the capability of taking images while the patient is standing.

The Pawnee Valley Community Hospital Foundation helped finance this project.

“Pawnee Valley Community Hospital is fortunate to have such strong local backing, which helps provide the means to improve our equipment and services,” said Julie Robben, director of imaging. “Since technology is forever changing, equipment upgrades are so important for our patients and staff.

“With our digital radiography technology, we can provide exceptional imaging quality to support an accurate diagnosis by a radiologist,” Robben said. “Also, images are displayed immediately so the technologist can review them prior to sending them to the radiologist.

“In addition, this spacious room allows us to accommodate patients brought to us on a stretcher.”

The updated x-ray room has its own bathroom for the convenience and comfort of patients.

“All our staff members appreciate the hard work by the PVCH Foundation in raising funds for this project,” Robben commented. “We also are grateful to each business and community member that made donations.

Cody Thacker, PVCH Foundation director, said the purchase of the new x-ray room was important “because it provides access to advanced diagnostic imaging right

here in our community. It also supports the hospital’s reputation as a center for high-quality healthcare.”

The Foundation donated $100,000 toward the purchase of the new facility. Then, a local private donor contributed an additional $50,000, bringing the total Foundation contribution to $150,000.

“In partnership with donors, the Foundation has been raising and investing funds to advance quality healthcare in Pawnee County, making a number of hospital projects possible,” Thacker commented. “The Foundation is guided by a group of local trustees who are valued for their leadership and vision for the Foundation’s success.”

Pawnee Valley Community Hospital offers new x-ray room

Six milling industry professionals from Mexico, Central America and Venezuela were in Kansas this month to participate in the Wheat Quality Council’s annual Hard Red Winter (HRW) Wheat Tour and gain firsthand insight about this year’s wheat crop and engage directly with Kansas wheat farmers.

“This tour is an excellent opportunity for U.S. customers from Mexico, Central America and Venezuela to get out into the fields and see Kansas wheat production firsthand,” said Stephanie Bryant-Erdmann, U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) Assistant Regional Director, Mexico/Central America/Caribbean/Venezuela.

U.S. Wheat Associates sponsored the delegation using USDA’s Regional Agricultural Promotion Program (RAPP) for Central America and Venezuela and Market Access Program (MAP) funds for Mexico.

The tour kicked off in Manhattan, Kansas, with a briefing on the diverse growing conditions across the state and the challenges Kansas farmers face.

On the first full day of the tour, participants from Honduras and Mexico visited Chris Tanner’s farm near Norton, Kansas. Tanner is President of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers and Secretary of the National Association of Wheat Growers.

The participants had the opportunity to ride with Tanner in his sprayer, experience sitting in his combine and then visit one of his wheat fields to perform yield calculations. These direct interactions between buyers and farmers are invaluable for building strong customer relationships.

“The visit was incredibly valuable — for both of us,” said Tanner. “When people from the wheat and milling industry come to the farm, it’s a meaningful experience for them. They get to see firsthand where the product begins. For me, it’s rewarding to meet the people who take my product to consumers, build those relationships and show them the practices we use to produce a safe, high-quality product.”

“Mexico is the largest buyer of U.S. wheat in the world, a title it has held for nine consecutive years,” said Mitch Skalicky, USW Regional Vice Present, Mexico/Central America/Caribbean/Venezuela. “U.S. wheat exports to Mexico are up 18% year over year at 3.90 MMT (143 million bushels). It is also the #1 buyer of U.S. HRW and has purchased 1.57 MMT (57.8 million bushels) thus far in marketing year 2024/2025, which will end on May 31.”

Honduras is a top 20 market for U.S. wheat exports with U.S. wheat exports to Honduras growing 3% year over year to 302,000 MT (11.5 million bushels). U.S. wheat has maintained 100% market share in Honduras for more than a decade.

On the next day of the tour, some of the participants visited the Millershaski farm near Lakin, where they had the chance to speak with Gary and his son Kyler about their operation. Gary Millershaski, who serves on the Kansas Wheat Commission and is Treasurer of USW, then met up with the entire delegation at the evening meeting in Wichita.

“We raise wheat because that’s what we do,” Gary told the group. “It’s what our family has always done, and we take great pride in it.” As each of the vehicles pulled up to their farm, Gary welcomed the visitors by inviting each person to introduce themselves and share why they chose to participate in the wheat tour — sparking engaging conversations and building immediate rapport. The personal connections made between the farmers and millers were enhanced as they showed them their combine and header as well as evaluated the fields. Gary pointed out signs of drought stress, but said that despite this year’s challenges, the heads are large, and it should be an average crop.

“It all comes down to one thing,” Gary said. “How can we work together to make tomorrow better than today?”

The delegation also included customers from Venezuela and Costa Rica. Pamela Rubio, USW/Mexico City Programs and Communications Assistant, accompanied the group.

U.S. wheat sales to Central America are up 42% year over year at 1.16 MMT (42.5 million bushels) and U.S. HRW wheat sales to Central America total 307,000 MT (11.3 million bushels).

Venezuela is a top 20 market for U.S. wheat exports, and the eighth largest U.S. HRW market in the world in marketing year 2024/25, having purchased nearly 200,000 metric tons (7.35 million bushels) of U.S. HRW wheat.

USW is the industry’s market development organization working in more than 100 countries. Its mission is to develop, maintain and expand international markets to enhance wheat’s profitability for U.S. wheat producers and its value for their customers. USW activities are funded by producer checkoff dollars managed by 17 state wheat commissions and USDA Foreign Agricultural Service cost-share programs.

The City of Great Bend will seek approval from the Great Bend City
Council Monday for the repair and rehabilitation of 14 manholes and boxes in
the city’s sanitary storm sewer system.


Mayer Specialty Services is the only offer the city received for the service.
The city stated they have a long-standing relationship with Mayer as the
company is the only business in the region that performs this work.
The bid includes cleaning, hydro blasting, repairing and filling all holes or
missing brick, creating a smooth flow and sealing.


Some of the manholes and boxes to be repaired are on Lakin Avenue, the alley
west of the High Rise, the alley between 11th and 12th,
and at 20th and Kansas.
The $49,120 bid would be paid for from the Equipment Maintenance line item. 

The
council will be presented the motion to approve the bid at Monday’s meeting beginning
at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

PAWNEE COUNTY – Dustin Barnes, 48 of Larned, appeared Wednesday morning in the custody of the Pawnee County Sheriff for Preliminary Hearing on felony charges of&nbsp; Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer resulting in bodily harm; and Interference with Law Enforcement; Resisting Felony Arrest, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett.

Prior to the commencement of the hearing, the parties advised the Court they had reached a plea agreement.  In exchange for the defendant’s plea to Count 1 as amended, the State agreed to dismiss Count 2 and amend Count 1 to simply Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer, a Class A person misdemeanor. Barnes entered a Guilty plea to the amended charge of Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer.  

In support of the plea, Pawnee County Attorney Douglas McNett advised the Court that had the matter preceded to trial the State would have presented evidence that the defendant was previously charged with separate physical altercations that occurred at the Pawnee Plaza in Larned, Kansas on December 10, 2024, and January 13, 2025.  Barnes subsequently entered a No Contest plea to Disorderly Conduct on March 31, 2025, due to the incidents and was ordered to pay court costs and a fine.

  As a result of the altercations, however, the facility gave Barnes a “No Trespass Advisory” and directed he not to be on the premises again.  On the morning of May 12, 2025, Larned Police Department Dispatch was notified that Barnes had been banging on the door of the facility manager’s Larned residence. No charges were requested by the manager at that time, but the family asked law enforcement to notify Barnes not to come back to the residence.

Later that morning, a Larned Police Department Sergeant located Barnes walking west of the Edwards Park Public Golf Course near the driving range and golf cart storage buildings. Before the officer could exit his patrol vehicle, Barnes struck the officer through the open driver side window an estimated eight to ten times with a closed fist. 

 As a result, the officer deployed his taser through the open window.  A taser was deployed a second time when Barnes refused to comply with commands to put his hands behind his back and began walking away. The officer was treated at the scene for minor injuries.  Pursuant to protocol, EMS also checked the defendant and determined he did not suffer any injuries other than the puncture wounds from the taser deployment.  The attack on the officer was captured by the officer’s patrol car in-car video.  The second deployment of non-lethal force was captured on the officer’s body cam which activated once the officer exited the patrol vehicle.

After accepting the plea,&nbsp; Magistrate Judge Julie Cowell sentenced Barnes to 12 months on probation with an underlying 12 month jail sentence.&nbsp;

A taser was deployed a second time when Barnes refused to comply with commands to put his hands behind his back and began walking away. The officer was treated at the scene for minor injuries. Pursuant to protocol, EMS also checked the defendant and determined he did not suffer any injuries other than the puncture wounds from the taser deployment. The attack on the officer was captured by the officer’s patrol car in-car video. The second deployment of non-lethal force was captured on the officer’s body cam which activated once the officer exited the patrol vehicle.After accepting the plea,&nbsp; Magistrate Judge Julie Cowell sentenced Barnes to 12 months on probation with an underlying 12 month jail sentence.&nbsp;

Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland today announced that nearly $600,000 has been awarded in the latest round of Tourism Attraction Development Grant funding, bringing the total awarded this fiscal year to more than $1 million. The new grants will support 32 communities through 21 projects aimed at developing new or enhancing existing tourism attractions across the state.

The City of Larned Christmas Decoration Committee received $10,000 through the grants.

“Tourism continues to be a powerful driver of economic growth for communities of all sizes—and we’re committed to supporting as many attractions as possible,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “These grant initiatives are extremely effective strategic investments that not only enhance the visitor experience, but also create more jobs, support small businesses, and strengthen community pride.”

Through the grant program, Kansas Tourism will inspire travel, enhance the state’s economy and elevate unique community experiences across the state. The program is designed to provide communities across Kansas with financial backing and continue improving the state as a top tourism destination.

“Kansas continues to invest in the kind of attractions that inspire curiosity, spark exploration and keep visitors coming back,”&nbsp;Kansas Tourism Director Bridgette Jobe said. “We know our communities thrive off vibrancy, and with more than $1 million awarded this fiscal year, we are proud to be able to support them while they continue bringing in fresh energy and new experiences to the tourism landscape.”

The total amount of funding awarded this round was $599,616, and recipients will contribute more than $8 million in matching funds for the 21 projects. Once the projects are complete, they will contribute nearly $16 million in total investment.

389 miles of paved roads each year. The county started resurfacing roads on May
1 and the project will continue throughout the summer. 

Public
Works Director Chris Schartz told the Barton County Commission Tuesday that
citizens can find updates on possible road closures and where crews are working
at by going to the county website.


"I know it's a pain for the public to have to go around us," said Schartz. "Just like they have work to do, we have to get our work done. We're willing to work with you. We'll help you get in if you need to get into a field or something."
