The Kansas Department of Transportation, the Drive To Zero Coalition and local safety partners want anyone transporting young children to know the safety risks of not having children properly restrained when traveling.

Raising awareness is a big part of Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week, which is recognized across the country Sept. 15-21. A related media event will take place at 10 a.m. on Sept. 17 at the Topeka Zoo, located at 635 SW Gage Blvd., in Topeka. &nbsp;

“Nothing protects your child more than using child safety restraints properly and practicing safe driving behaviors,” said Gary Herman, KDOT Behavioral Safety Manager, who will be one of the event speakers. “Set a good example - buckle up every time, travel posted speed limits, avoid distractions and never drive impaired.”

The Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office, SAFE Kids, Kansas Highway Patrol and advocates across the state work together to improve child passenger safety. For over 30 years, the Kansas Motor Carriers Association has annually provided the KHP with new seats to distribute. In addition, local communities with certified car seat technicians may have free car seats for qualifying individuals. &nbsp;

“We want parents and caregivers to know there are several resources to make sure all children are using a car seat suitable for their age, height and weight,” said KTSRO Director Tenille Kimberlin. “Always using a properly installed car seat significantly increases the likelihood a child will survive a crash. Certified child passenger safety technicians across Kansas are here to help in that effort.”

Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week: Set a good example

Tracie Haselhorst and Jennifer Johnson at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation are combining their experience and education to help support people in crisis who could use a helping hand sooner rather than later.

The Mobile Crisis Response program is in its infancy but has already demonstrated its value to several people facing depression, psychosis and other mental-health issues, said Haselhorst, The Center’s clinical director.

This new effort is designed to support people of all ages in The Center’s four-county service area – Barton, Pawnee, Rice and Stafford.

“We are just getting this program started with only two people available to respond now in our mobile effort,” Haselhorst said. “We need more professionals on staff to offer the service 24/7. Our goal is to have five people available to respond in our mobile-response vehicle.”

These five would include a therapist, case manager, peer-support specialist, registered nurse and medication provider. At least two would respond to a call.

“The crises people face could entail any number of mental-health concerns that are new or are escalating,” Haselhorst said. “There also could be the threat of suicide or homicide.

“They might have been able to cope yesterday but need help today,” she continued, noting anyone can call for Mobile Crisis Response. “You don’t have to be a client of The Center.”

After the response, the person might seek further services at The Center, 5815 Broadway, or another entity. However, further treatment is entirely up to the person involved.

The initial call might come from the person in crisis, or from a family member, friend, employer, school district – anywhere.

“The main goal is to prevent a trip to the emergency room and/or jail,” Haselhorst explained. “We don’t want to see people in jail because of a mental-health issue.

“Instead, we are here to offer help as quickly as possible. We want to care for people early in hopes of de-escalating the problem. We know that sometimes people don’t want to come to The Center because of privacy or other concerns. Or they have no transportation. Now we can come to them.”

If someone opts for further care at The Center, services include individual and group therapy, case management, housing and employment support, substance-use disorder therapy and medication-assisted treatment.

CCBHC This list of services is a direct result of The Center’s holistic approach as a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic. Full certification was awarded earlier this year.

“As we prepared for certification, we informed the state of our plans and now we are following through on those plans,” said Johnson, open-access and crisis-team leader. “We have seen an increase in the number of crises and believe mobile response can be part of the solution.

“In addition, we can guide you to other resources offered by our community partners. We want people to be able to move on with their lives after the immediate crisis is over.”

Johnson and Haselhorst have worked together in crisis response for seven years. “This partnership definitely helps us better serve our clients and the community,” Johnson noted. “We collaborate constantly and value one another’s insights.”

Julie Kramp, The Center’s executive director, said “Tracie and Jennifer are filling an essential function of our non-profit agency. Both have a great deal of experience with crisis intervention and work closely with Laura Patzner, our crisis case manager.

“All three are highly skilled therapists with a depth of compassion, clarity and calmness necessary while helping those facing a mental-health crisis. They remain calm, assess the situation and respond appropriately.”

Eagle Media's news week in review

The Scorched Stone Farm, located in Holyrood, Kansas, has been around
since the early 1900s. The farm is currently operated by three generations of
Homolkas and is where they sell wagyu beef and floral arrangements. 

Over the
course of more than a century, Jessica Homolka said two fires have blazed
through the farm, scorching the limestone and turning it red, hence where the
name Scorched Stone Farm came from.


"In 2019, we concreted the barn in," said Homolka. "We pulled the horse stalls out. We had a few weddings out there. When COVID hit, we kind of shifted. It's more of a workshop space. We have our flower coolers out there. We have small workshops out there."

The farm in Holyrood was awarded a Barn Adaptation and Restoration Needs
(BARN) grant from Kansas Tourism. Homolka said the grant will help revitalize
the historic barn to foster new agritourism ventures.


"The grant will help us with concrete work," said Homolka. "We're placing concrete on two other sides for a patio space. We're sealing up windows, putting new doors in and things to help with water drainage."

Kansas Tourism officials will be visiting Scorched Stone Farm Monday, Sept. 16 at
1:30 p.m. to present the big check.

Ellinwood fourth grader Kambree Johnson is making a difference. A Kans for Kids Warrior, Kambree Johnson is Eagle Media's first winner of the 2024-25 school year in the Make a Difference Contest. Her good deed came in helping out the organization that is helping her and other cancer warriors.

"(I make a difference by) helping collect pop cans for the Kans for Kids can bin to help others, she said."

As a winner in the Make a Difference Contest, Kambree was handed a Great Bend Chamber gift certificate worth $100. Her Ellinwood Grade School teacher, Rebecca Hoffhines, also received a $100 Visa gift card. Teacher and student have known each other for several years.

"We do families here at the grade school with different kids in different grade levels all meeting on Wednesdays," said Hoffhines. "She's in my family so it's like I've gotten to interact with her from kindergarten until now she's in my class."

Contest forms were distributed to Barton County elementary schools in August. Eligible students can enter the contest by filling out the form and stating how they are making a difference in the world around them. Winners are randomly selected with the student winning a $100 chamber certificate and the nominating teacher winning a $100 Visa gift card. New winners will be drawn each month through May.

The winning student will also get a visit from Eagle Media staff and be featured on a radio news broadcast. This year's contest is powered by the following sponsors:

Ellinwood fourth grader selected as first Eagle Media Make a Difference winner

The student ambassadors at Barton Community College serve as
representatives of the college by conducting campus tours and participating in
recruitment activities. Along with recruitment, the students perform office
work in the Admissions Office and assist where needed for other departments. 

Barton
Director of Admissions Tana Cooper said ambassadors are selected from both the
freshman and sophomore classes through an application process.


"These students go through a more rigorous application process," said Cooper. "They have to get a letter of recommendation from a high school counselor. They have to write an essay and go through an interview with our staff. Not everyone gets hired. We pick the best of the best."

The ambassadors were introduced to the Barton Board of Trustees at Tuesday’s
study session on campus.


"When people ask me what my favorite part of my job is, the student ambassadors are always at the top," said Cooper. "Off the top of my head, there are seven of my former ambassadors that are current employees at Barton. There are four other former ambassadors who are admissions representatives or directors of admissions at other institutions."

Each May, the college recognizes the Ambassadors of the Year with special
awards and recognition.&nbsp; &nbsp;

representatives of the college by conducting campus tours and participating in
recruitment activities. Along with recruitment, the students perform office
work in the Admissions Office and assist where needed for other departments. Barton
Director of Admissions Tana Cooper said ambassadors are selected from both the
freshman and sophomore classes through an application process.
"These students go through a more rigorous application process," said Cooper. "They have to get a letter of recommendation from a high school counselor. They have to write an essay and go through an interview with our staff. Not everyone gets hired. We pick the best of the best."The ambassadors were introduced to the Barton Board of Trustees at Tuesday’s
study session on campus.
"When people ask me what my favorite part of my job is, the student ambassadors are always at the top," said Cooper. "Off the top of my head, there are seven of my former ambassadors that are current employees at Barton. There are four other former ambassadors who are admissions representatives or directors of admissions at other institutions."Each May, the college recognizes the Ambassadors of the Year with special

🎤Forward Ever: KDOT I-70 bridge demolition

On January 24, 1980, Mary Robin Walter was found murdered in her home west of the city of Great Bend in Nelson Trailer Park near the airport. She was 23 years of age at the time. She had been shot multiple times by an unknown assailant. A 22-caliber handgun, later confirmed to be the murder weapon, was recovered at the scene. The Sheriff’s Office investigated the case with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and assistance from the Great Bend Police Department. Suspects were developed and interviewed but no conclusive evidence was discovered. One of the suspects was identified as Steven Hanks, who was a neighbor to the Walters’ family at the time of the homicide. He was 25 years of age at the time.

Over the years, dozens of law enforcement officers looked at the case to no avail. In mid-2022, I was approached by Detective Sgt. Adam Hales to reopen the case using new techniques and technology that were not available at the time of the murder. In all honesty, it was with some degree of skepticism that I authorized the expenditure of manpower and resources. Hales along with Lieutenant Paden, Detective Travis Doze and Detective Brian Volkel reopened the case looking at it with new eyes.

The first order of business was to consolidate the hundreds of documents accumulated over 40 years into an organized case file. Many interviews had been conducted decades apart, some documents were missing. Eventually, everything was indexed and consolidated. Under the direction of Sgt. Hales, evidence was re-examined and submitted for testing including DNA.(no DNA was found) Numerous interviews were conducted.

Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Great Bend Police Department all assisted. Many of the witnesses as well as law enforcement officers that were originally involved in the case had died and interviews were not possible.

Eventually, by late 2022 an affidavit was presented to the District Court and an arrest warrant for Steven Hanks was issued. Hanks was arrested on December 8, 2022 and charged with murder and second-degree.

The Kansas Atty. Gen.’s Office prosecuted the case represented by Associate Deputy Atty. Gen. Jessica Domme. On April 15, 2024, Hanks was bound over on a charge of second-degree murder in a preliminary hearing. By August 8, 2024, a plea agreement was reached, sentencing was scheduled for September 12, 2024.

The agreement that was reached under the 1980 Kansas Statutes was for a sentence of not less than 5 years and not more than 25 years. At the sentencing hearing Barton County District Court Judge Hon. Steve Johnson departed upward from the plea agreement and sentenced Hanks to not less than 10 years and not more than 25 years. Hanks remains in the custody of the Sheriff’s Office and will be released to the Kansas Department of Corrections upon receipt of the necessary paperwork.

We believe this is the oldest cold case in the State of Kansas to be solved and result in a conviction. From the date of the homicide to the sentencing was 44 years, 7 months and 19 days.

On a personal note, I was 18 years old and a senior in high school when this homicide occurred. I remember it well. By 1982 I had started with the Sheriff’s Office as a reserve deputy and have been associated with the Barton County Sheriff’s Office ever since. I worked for the four Sheriff’s that preceded me and this homicide has haunted all of us. It bothers me that many of the people who were so affected by this tragic crime have since passed away prior to bringing the suspect to justice. I consider myself fortunate that I had the resources and the diligent personnel to close this case. The credit for solving this homicide goes to the dedicated officers that had the tenacity to bring it to a conviction.

The press box at the Hoisington High School football field will be dedicated to Dr. Blake Herres on Oct. 4, prior to the home
game. Herres spent more than 20 years broadcasting football games, and many
more years supporting Hoisington activities, and passed away in
March 2023.


USD 431, along with contributions from the Herres Family Foundation, spent
$46,675 on renovations to the press box. 


In a separate project, Bartz Construction, who handled the press box improvements
this summer, and Superintendent Patrick Crowdis are working on estimates for a
new weight room at Hoisington High School.


"That estimate would be right around $425,000 for moving that weight room," said Crowids. "We're still looking at how it would best fit at the high school. We're still exploring that."

Press box improvements include new windows, metal panels around the structure,
carpet and an expanded guard rail on the roof for video personnel and coaches. Hoisington
will play Cheney on Oct. 4. The press box dedication will
tentatively take place at 6:30 p.m. with kickoff at 7 p.m.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

🎙Post Podcast: Great Bend Airfest preview - Matt Younkin

If you ever see a child fighting cancer, your life will be changed forever. That was the message from Barton County Commissioner Duane Reif during Tuesday's meeting. Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation turns 30 years old on Saturday, Sept. 14. Reif's children, Shane and Sarah, were just 8 and 11 years old at the time, respectively, when they created Kans for Katie after their cousin was diagnosed with a tumor.

"They understood that cancer treatment was very expensive," Duane said. "They quietly came up with a plan on their own on what they could do to help out. They had collected aluminum cans for spending money in the past and asked if it would be okay to collect cans to help defer medical expenses that Katie's family would have."

The Reifs scoured area neighborhoods for cans and asked friends and community members for their cans. Within a week, more than 1,000 pounds of cans had been dropped off in the Reif driveway. It was just part of Katie's happy ending. Just 10 months old at the time of her diagnosis, Katie is now 30, married, and the mother of her own 10-month-old.

Kans for Katie became Kans for Kids in 1996. Duane and Deb Reif co-directed the non-profit until their retirement in 2020. Christi Herber took over as executive director on Sept. 1, 2020. Kans for Kids brings in donations from a variety of sources to help families in Barton and six surrounding counties. In Duane's final year with the organization, can recycling alone brought in $17,000.

Tuesday morning, the Barton County Commission also heard from Christy Huslig, mother of Dade Cannon, who lost a nine-year battle with leukemia in 2018 at the age of 14. Reif made the motion to pass Proclamation 2024-15.

"September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month," he said, "and we will remember the eight children of Kans for Kids who lost their lives: Kristin, Garrett, Adam, Dade, Nova, Gael, Jade, and James."

Thirty-seven Kans for Kids Cancer Warriors have won their battles against the disease. Kans for Kids has an endowment through the Golden Belt Community Foundation to continue its support of area families, and portions of funds raised go directly to the Becky Nicholson Scholarship, the Jan Aylward Memorial Scholarship, and the Dade Cannon Memorial Scholarship, which supports siblings of cancer warriors.

Cans may be dropped off at a variety of locations in the area to help support Kans for Kids. Cash donations may also be made at Kans for Kids, 169 S. Main Street or P.O. Box 178, Hoisington, KS 67544.

Kans for Kids has an endowment through the Golden Belt Community Foundation to continue its support of area families, and portions of funds raised go directly to the Becky Nicholson Scholarship, the Jan Aylward Memorial Scholarship, and the Dade Cannon Memorial Scholarship, which supports siblings of cancer warriors.Cans may be dropped off at a variety of locations in the area to help support Kans for Kids. Friday's weather

The high school sports season is underway. The Great Bend High School cross country and soccer teams have already hosted events, and the Panther football team plays its home opener against Olathe South on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. At Monday's USD 428 Board of Education meeting, Assistant Superintendent John Popp reminded visitors of expected behavior at sporting events.

"It's getting harder and harder to find both coaches as well as referees and umpires," he said. "We would ask anybody who comes to understand that it is a middle or high school sporting activity for kids. It's to grow kids, to help them learn and grow and be good, productive adults. It is not about whether or not the official made the exact, right call every moment throughout the game."

Fans are expected to cheer positively for teams and athletes and refrain from bringing prohibited items, such as alcohol and weapons. Middle and high school students typically have their own seating section, and elementary students should be seated with adults.

"We don't really want to see pick-up football games behind the stadium," Popp said. "We don't want to see basketball games in the hallway at the high school or anything like that. If they're coming to watch the event, they should watch the event."

The Panther football team will also play at home on Sept. 20, Sept. 27, and Oct. 18. The board agreed similar practices should be maintained when Great Bend teams play on the road.

USD 428 admins reminds Panther fans of proper behavior at games

JASPER COUNTY, Mo. —A Kansas man died in an accident just after 2a.m. Thursday in Jasper County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Ford F150 driven by Lane J. Antenen, 62, Bazine, was northbound in the southbound lane of Interstate 49 five miles north of Carthage.

The pickup struck a southbound 2019 Volvo semi driven by Kudlip Singh, 34, Aurora, Illinois, head-on. Antenen was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the county coroner's office.

 EMS transported Singh to Mercy Hospital in Joplin. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

The five-person Board of Commissioners for the Great Bend Recreation
Commission will be in search of a new member. Jessica Milsap, announced that
she is moving to Wichita, marking Monday’s meeting as her last on the board.


"It wasn't planned," said Milsap. "It just kind of fell into place. It seems right. At the end of this month, I'll be moving. It's been a pleasure."

Along with Milsap, Randy Goering, Dr. Jonathan Pike, Colleen Newman and Chuy
Loera serve on the board.
Milsap was a city-appointed member, so Rec Executive Director Chris Umphres
said he would be in contact with the City of Great Bend to start receiving
interested candidates to take the vacant seat.

Great Bend Rec looking for new board member, Milsap moving

Jackie Guzman wanted to enhance her radiologic-technologist skills to better serve her patients at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital (PVCH).

The result is a new certification credential along with her title of Registered Radiologic Technologist.

“Although I had been performing CT scans at PVCH for more than two years, I wanted to further my education and expand my knowledge,” Guzman said. “This certification helps me apply new information to real-life scenarios, allowing for more efficiency.”

CT scans can help physicians diagnose various types of cancers, blood clots in the lungs, strokes, blood-vessel abnormalities and fractures.

“These are just some of the diseases and conditions that can be detected with a CT scan,” Guzman noted.

As part of her certification requirements, Guzman performed at least 125 procedures that had to be approved by a certified technologist.

“In addition, I completed coursework in physics, procedures, anatomy, pathology, safety and patient care,” she noted. “Next, I passed the national computed tomography exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.”

Guzman’s earlier education included an associate’s degree in Radiologic Technology and a bachelor’s in Medical Diagnostic Imaging at Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in 2022.

Her clinical rotation was performed in a FHSU x-ray program at Garden City where she worked as a student Radiologic Technologist.

“I came to PVCH immediately after graduating from FHSU,” she recalled. “I had met the Director of PVCH Imaging at a Fort Hays State career fair. Since that meeting, I knew where I wanted to work. PVCH is home to a professional, caring staff that serves patients and families in Pawnee and surrounding counties.”

Julie Robben, PVCH Director of Imaging, noted that many CT technologists are not certified “but it is something that we, as a team, feel is important to our community. Jackie’s certification illustrates her dedication to PVCH and her patients.

“Her willingness to go the extra mile, dedication to growing as a technologist and bilingual skills are great assets to our team,” Robben added. “Equally important, her kindness and gentleness demonstrate her compassion for patients. We are blessed to have Jackie as part of our team.”

Robben mentioned that the Imaging staff always looks for ways to improve skills, whether it be with certifications, continuing education or equipment updates.

“Imaging technology and procedures constantly change,” she noted. “It is important for our team to stay current with these changes at our Pat Young Imaging Center to provide the community with the quality care they deserve.”

Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, 923 Carroll in Larned, is a 25-bed facility, offering many services not typically available in a smaller facility.
