On Wednesday, Oct. 2, the Hoisington Police Department received a report regarding a suspicious individual in the Hoisington High School parking lot. A male subject driving a silver GMC pickup approached two female students and asked if they were interested in joining a sports program in Texas. The individual left the area without incident.

Law enforcement has had prior contact with this individual, but there is no immediate threat to the public. The situation is being actively monitored, and the HPD is conducting an investigation into the matter.

While there is no evidence suggesting danger at this time, the Hoisington Police Department urges the public to remain vigilant at all times. If anyone encounters suspicious behavior or has information regarding this incident, contact the Hoisington Police Department immediately at 620-653-4995.

Take survey about future improvements to downtown Great Bend

Two educators from Great Bend Public Schools have been selected to serve on the prestigious board of the Mid-America Association for Computers in Education, known as MACE. Lindsay Mazouch and Leah Yancey, both Instructional Technology Coaches and Media Specialists for USD 428 serving at Lincoln Elementary and Riley Elementary, began their two-year terms on the MACE Board of Directors in July 2024.

MACE is a non-profit corporation with the educational mission to promote and enhance the use of technology in learning environments. The organization provides a platform for educators to share and exchange ideas, techniques, materials, and procedures for using technology effectively in schools.

The selection of Mazouch and Yancey is significant, as they are among the few representatives from western Kansas to serve on the board, joining educators from larger, urban districts across the state.

“It’s a huge honor to represent Great Bend and western Kansas on this board,” said Mazouch. “While I’m not usually one to draw attention to myself, I believe it’s important to highlight how we’re expanding our influence and connections beyond our local community.”

Mazouch and Yancey were first invited to volunteer with MACE, attending virtual meetings and the behind-the-scenes planning for the annual conference held in Manhattan, KS. After a year of volunteer service, they were encouraged to apply to serve on the board of directors. After the application process and interviews, both were selected to begin their two-year terms this July.

As board members, Mazouch and Yancey join a group of 12 educational professionals, including superintendents, instructional coaches, principals, librarians, and representatives from the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE). Their roles will involve collaboration and innovation in education, shaping the direction of future conferences, and promoting technology integration in classrooms across the region.

Great Bend educators to serve on state-wide technology board

The 4-H year runs from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30 each year. That made Tuesday's appearance by Michelle Beran with the Cottonwood District of K-State Research and Extension before the Barton County Commission a recruitment call. Beran said a goal for the upcoming year is to get more kids into the program.

"We currently have about 130 4-H members this past year in our program," she said. "That does not include 5-6-year-old Cloverbuds. That's 7-18s. That number is down a little bit but that number is down statewide. We are looking at lots of different ways to do some recruiting and to build those numbers back up across the county."

Beran updated the commission on projects involving 4-H members in Barton and Ellis Counties. A group of 4-H20 Ambassadors toured a water plant and spent a day at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center with the goal of learning how to present conservation management information to groups of all ages. The Ambassadors also went on a field trip to Garden City last spring to tour a golf course and see how the facility manages water use. Forty-two 4-H members qualified to take entries to the Kansas State Fair, and Beran transported nearly 70 entries to Hutchinson.

"We have seven active clubs across our county, so we are looking forward to the enrollment process getting started and adding some new young people this year," she said.

The commission also heard from 4-H members Ailey Williams and Melody Braddy, who discussed how 4-H has benefitted them. The board proclaimed Oct. 6-12 as National 4-H Week.

Youth who turn seven before Jan. 1 of the current 4-H year are eligible to enroll, and youth who turn 19 before Jan. 1 of the current 4-H year are ineligible to enroll. Children who celebrate a fifth or sixth birthday before Jan. 1 of the current year are eligible to enroll in the 4-H Cloverbud program.

Barton Co. proclaims Oct. 6-12 as National 4-H Week; enrollment underway

From the Pawnee County Sheriff's Office...

On Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, deputies of the Pawnee County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence located in Garfield. Upon arrival, Deputies contacted a resident of the household who detailed his house being burglarized, being beaten, threatened, and having his property destroyed. 

The victim told law enforcement there was a separate intended juvenile victim that was not at the residence during the burglary. Throughout the investigation, law enforcement learned eight suspects drove to the residence and were involved at various levels. 

Law enforcement worked throughout the night collecting evidence from the scene. The following day, deputies conducted multiple interviews with multiple suspects and the victim. The victim was able to identify several suspects in the case after being presented photo line-ups. 

Additionally, the intended juvenile victim began making threats of extreme violence towards the suspects and their families. Law enforcement gathered intelligence and was able to determine the juvenile was in Ellinwood. With the assistance of the Ellinwood Police Department and the Barton County Sheriff's Office, the juvenile was taken into custody after a brief struggle. 

On Tuesday, Oct. 1, the detective and deputies of the Pawnee County Sheriff's Office and officers with assistance of the Larned Police Department simultaneously executed two search warrants: one in the city of Garfield, and one in the city of Larned. Two suspects were taken into custody without incident and questioned as to their involvement. The suspects were arrested for the charges of aggravated burglary, criminal threat, battery, criminal damage to property, and felony interference with law enforcement. Additional arrests are expected in the cases.

Burglary & battery case results in arrests in Pawnee County

While the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo has dozens of animals to enjoy
visiting, that does not mean your pets can come check out fellow animals. Zoo
staff sent out a reminder to the public, that pets are not allowed inside the
zoo. 

Curator Ashley Burdick said outside animals can spread diseases from one
to another.


"We don't know if everyone has their animals vaccinated," said Burdick. "They could have parasites they could pass when they're making a mess out in the zoo. Any of our animals are susceptible to that. That's one of the main points."

The zoo does not allow emotional support animals, but service animals trained
to perform specific tasks are permitted inside.


"Usually, you can tell when it's just a run of the mill pet," said Burdick. "They get super excited and start barking at the animals. Our animals aren't used to that. That can agitate them."

Burdick said zoo staff also often has their ambassador animals walking around
on their own leashes and pets could pose a danger to them.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

WINKEL: Medicare Part D open enrollment

More than 100 people and some 30 delegates on stage attended Tuesday's tri-county commission meeting featuring elected boards from Barton, Pawnee, and Russell Counties inside the Fine Arts Auditorium at Barton Community College. After more than two hours of discussion about a proposed National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor (NIETC), Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett presented a letter, addressed to the U.S. Department of Energy, for all three boards of commissioners to sign.

"We needed to memorialize, as (Pawnee County Commissioner Bob Rein) said, tonight's kind of historic situation where three counties come together with unanimity and are saying no," McNett said. "We don't need your help. If we need it, we'll ask for it, but our land is not for sale."

At issue is the Grain Belt Express transmission line and the proposed NIETC that would cut through all three counties. With the federally-proposed corridor come questions about eminent domain and the loss of private land. McNett said electric issues have historically been state issues, and the Kansas Corporation Commission has already sited the Grain Belt Express. Rein said that eliminates the need for any federal intervention.

"As far as a NIETC is concerned, need is part of that process," Rein said. "If Grain Belt Express is already sited, what is the need for a NIETC? Personally, I don't care if it's five miles or five feet, the federal government does not belong in Pawnee County. They don't belong in Barton County, and they don't belong in Russell County."

The letter objecting to federal involvement asks the Dept. of Energy to consider the historical importance of generational farms, the families that reside on that land, and the negative impacts an NIETC could have on future land values, future development, and the environment. All three commissions signed the letter unanimously.

While Jessica Blehm is now available to treat a wide range of conditions at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, she is especially interested in younger and older people struggling with mental-health issues.

Blehm is the new therapist and licensed specialist clinical social worker at The Center, 5815 Broadway.

“I work with clients age 13 and older but my favorites are teenagers,” Blehm said. “There’s a perception that teens are difficult, but if you think about it, they have it the worst. They’re expected to carry many responsibilities but have few of the benefits or rights that go along with those responsibilities.

“They should act like adults but be okay with being treated like kids – a really frustrating place to be. Older folks tend to be in a similar bind. They struggle with losing independence and shifts in identity during transitional stages of their lives.”

In addition to providing individual therapy, Blehm also does intakes one day a week. “I love the opportunity to normalize mental-health struggles and make people feel good about coming in for help. This may be difficult for them but it is a huge step toward feeling better.”

Specialties Blehm offers treatment for conditions such as depression, anxiety and life transitions but she also has a couple of specialties.

One is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which was originally developed to help people who are suicidal, self-harming or have diagnoses of borderline personality disorder.

“While DBT is fantastic for that group of people, it also has applications for all of us,” said Blehm, who has advanced DBT training. “It teaches practical, effective behavioral skills that focus on building a life worth living.

“This is what makes DBT something for everyone. I use the skills myself every day.”

Blehm also specializes in borderline personality disorder, which often displays risk-taking behaviors, trouble with regulating emotions, and difficulty in expressing needs and setting boundaries effectively.

She also has counseled people who have experienced domestic and sexual violence, those struggling with addiction and those who are or have been incarcerated.

“The thing that all of these groups have in common is that there’s a huge stigma around them,” Blehm emphasized. “We tend to blame people for their situations without taking into account all the environmental factors that contribute to the choices they make.

“If we could get one thing out there to the world it is this: blaming and shaming people, including yourself, only makes the problems worse.”

Background Blehm, who grew up in Russell, earned her bachelor’s degree in social work in 2012 and master’s in social work the following year, both at Wichita State University. She also was field instructor at WSU and adjunct clinical instructor for The University of Kansas School of Social Welfare, Western Kansas MSW Program.

Her professional background includes two years at The Center where she cared for clients as a therapist in 2015-16. She is glad to be back.

“The Center’s staff is wonderful – from the executive director who knows everyone by name, to Kobe the therapy dog, who greets me every morning. I love coming to The Center where we view work as a place to contribute, as well as a place that can be fulfilling and pleasant.

“I also appreciate the focus on work/personal life balance and being engaged with the staff as people with real lives outside of work,” she continued. “There is an appreciation here that we can’t help others if we are overstretched and trying to pour from an empty bucket.”

Blehm brings therapy background, specialties to The Center

BARTON COUNTY — The Barton County Sheriff's Office responded to discussion about an arrest made on Sept. 30 and released body camera video of the encounter.&nbsp; The Sheriff's office in a social media report said much of that information discussed in the community is incorrect.

 Just after 2 a.m. Monday, a deputy with the Barton County Sheriff’s Office observed a vehicle traveling southbound on Main Street in the city of Great Bend, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

The driver failed to stop behind the stop line at the intersection of 10th and Main.  The deputy initiated a traffic stop and the driver pulled into a convenience store at 10th and Morton.

The deputy approached the vehicle and identified himself and his agency as well as the reason for the stop. The driver was asked for his driver’s license and proof of insurance. 

The driver refused to give the deputy his driver’s license in violation of KSA 8-244. This statute is a misdemeanor and an arrestable offense. The driver was arguing about the reason for the traffic stop as well as stating he did not have to show the officer his license. 

The deputy opened the car door to place the driver under arrest at which time a struggle ensued. During the course of the struggle the deputy warned the suspect “I will tase you."&nbsp;

 The suspect was able to escape the deputy’s grasp and attempted to flee on foot, at which point the deputy deployed a Taser. The suspect was running away from the deputy and fell striking his face on the pavement when the effects of the Taser took place.

The deputy had called for assistance and officers from the Great Bend Police Department arrived at the scene and assisted in securing the suspect. 

The Great Bend Fire Department EMS service was called and examined the suspect. He was later transported to University of Kansas Health Systems for medical treatment and released at which time he was transported to the Barton County Jail.

The suspect was identified as Daniel Zuniga, 18, of Hoisington.  Zuniga was booked on requested charges of battery of a law enforcement officer, interference of a law enforcement officer and the traffic charges. He has since posted a $2500 bond and was released. The incident has been reviewed by the administrative staff at the Sheriff’s Office. Bellendir said no violations of department policy or Kansas Statutes have been found.

Silent auction deals available Oct. 5 at Rosewood Rodeo

Great Bend-based Fuller Industries Inc. earned the New Partner of the Year Award from HD Supply, the facility maintenance distribution subsidiary of The Home Depot. The recognition came during HD Supply’s annual trade show in Nashville, Tenn.

“This is a huge event,” said Joe Mann, Fuller's general manager and vice president. “It is their top award. This is a tremendous honor.”

Fuller inked the deal with the distributor last year with the first shipment of Fuller-made cleaning products arriving at HD Supply facilities last November. The items, flying under HD Supply’s private Renown label, don’t appear on retail shelves but are instead delivered to commercial facility janitorial/maintenance providers nationwide.

“The show Is a chance for the sales teams from HD Supply to interact with all the vendors,” Mann said. This marked the first year Fuller had a presence at the event, and among those representing Fuller were company Chief Executive Officer Craig Rudin and Brett Hughes, Great Bend, Fuller's vice president of sales operations.

“We had a chance to showcase our products to those who will promote and use them in the field,” Mann said. “They liked what they saw and we are excited to have items made here in Great Bend put into service around the country.”

This is the latest foray Fuller has made into this private label market. The company makes and delivers a broad portfolio of products that sell under other names.

“We are focused on contract manufacturing and private brands for industry-leading distributors looking to separate their house brand from national competitors,” he said. “We have concentrated on commercial janitorial products – soaps and cleaners, from those for washing hands to those for industrial cleaning needs.”

Fuller earns national award from major distributor HD Supply

No stranger to the Golden Belt Community Concert Association, Jim Witter is back to perform “Timeless Hits of Billy Joel” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in the Great Bend Municipal Auditorium, Lakin and Stone. The event is for Golden Belt Community Concert members.

As with all of his concerts, Witter’s performance will be enhanced by multimedia, offering glimpses into famous highlights of Billy Joel’s career. Witter’s sidemen will add color, rhythm, vocals and fun to the show. This first concert of the 2024-2025 season will be Witter’s fourth appearance on the GBCCA stage.

A renowned musician and entertainer for more than 30 years, Witter has been sharing his own original music or paying tribute to his favorite musicians also including The Beatles, Barry Manilow, and beloved musical duos in a show titled “Brothers.”

His first performance here was in the association’s 2010-2011 season when he presented “The Piano Men,” singing songs of both Billy Joel and Elton John. Since then, his concerts have included “Feelin’ Groovy,” featuring the music of Simon and Garfunkel in 2012-2013, and “Crocodile Rockin’,” a tribute to Elton John, in 2021-2022.

GBCCA members are in for a real treat with another one of Witter’s superb concerts. This GBCCA event is open to association members. No single concert tickets are available. Because the association encourages young people’s interest in music and the performing arts, full-time students will be admitted for a $5 donation at the door.

Good news for concert members: The Golden Belt Community Concert Association and the Great Bend Recreation Commission will be providing eight handicap parking spaces in front of the northeast entrance of the auditorium for every concert. Blue cones, placed at the curb before each space, will designate handicap-only parking.

Transportation to the concerts will again be provided for members in the Hoisington area who do not feel comfortable driving at night. Sunflower Diversified Services’ Catch-a-Ride will pick up the members from the parking lot of Hoisington’s Friendship House, 410 E. Third St., at 6:10 p.m. on the night of each concert. Members must sign up for the ride at Friendship House or call 620-653-2555.

Billy Joel hits opens concert season in Great Bend

Nature plays by its own rules. Saturday's 11th annual Butterfly Festival at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center drew in more than 600 people - the most since COVID - but just a handful of monarch butterflies to tag. KWEC Director Curtis Wolf said there were plenty of other bugs and butterflies to catch, and several activities for attendees to enjoy.

"We had a decent number of monarchs here about two weeks ago," he said. "We had some then but it wasn't just loaded like it has been in other years. I really don't know if possibly the dry weather has pushed them a little further east again. That's happened in other years."

Wolf said approximately 15 monarchs were tagged Saturday. Attendees also had the opportunity to see a performance by Kansas City-based StoneLion Puppet Theatre, hear about the importance of bees, and see a variety of insects in the invertebrate zoo. Wolf said approximately 350 people attended the festival last year, and nearly 800 attended before COVID in 2019.

"We definitely want to thank our volunteers," he said. "An event this size definitely can't happen without a lot of people involved. We had some wonderful workers this year and they really did an excellent job with all the people."

The Friday before the festival, KWEC hosted a ribbon cutting for its new Melody Marsh inside the pollinator garden at the facility.

More than 600 people attend KWEC's 11th annual Butterfly Festival

USD 428 Great Bend will be holding a surplus sale open to the public on Friday, Oct. 4, at the district’s former maintenance and transportation building, 2099 12th Street in Great Bend. The sale will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature a variety of surplus items available for purchase.

Items for sale include: · Desks · Chairs · Tables · Cubicles and cubicle parts · Other larger surplus items

This is a cash-and-carry event, meaning all purchases must be taken by buyers at the time of sale. All sales are final, and USD 428 will not provide loading, carrying, or delivery services for any items.

“We’re excited to offer the community the opportunity to purchase useful items as we clear out our surplus,” said John Popp, assistant superintendent for USD 428. “There’s a wide variety of items available, so we encourage everyone to come and check it out.”

Items will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, and there will be no holds or reservations.

USD 428 Great Bend hosting surplus sale this Friday

This fall after wheat is planted and any new stands of alfalfa are established, farmers will need to scout those fields for grasshoppers, fall armyworm, armyworm and any feeding damage on seedling plants.

Fall armyworms do not overwinter in Kansas in any significant numbers. Thus, after these larvae (worms) pupate in the soil and emerge as adult moths, they will head south for overwintering. Armyworm moths do not migrate south for the winter, but continue to feed on plants until temperatures get cooler, then overwinter in a protective cocoon in the soil.

Army cutworm moths, on the other hand, lay their eggs on the soil in the fall, and the larvae remain active throughout the winter, emerging to feed above ground in warm spells, and hiding deeper in the soil when it is cold. So, it is important to properly identify any worms feeding in wheat or seedling alfalfa, as armyworms and fall armyworms will not feed through the winter and early spring, but army cutworms will.

Keep in mind that, if growing conditions are favorable for fall planted wheat, it can withstand quite a bit of armyworm feeding and continue to grow. However, if growing conditions are not favorable, considerable feeding may severely reduce the stand.

Fall armyworm counts from pheromone traps steadily increased through August, particularly in central and eastern Kansas, with reports of egg masses in residential and agricultural settings. At-risk crops should be scouted regularly for the remainder of the growing season, says K-State Research &amp; Extension Entomologist Anthony Zukoff. Caterpillars increase in size at an exponential rate and a majority of feeding occurs during the last larval stage. It is critical to scout thoroughly and treat, if needed, before the caterpillars are over ½ inch long. Larger caterpillars are harder to control and do the most damage, says Zukoff.

Fall armyworm thresholds for fall planted crops

• Alfalfa: 1-2 caterpillars per square foot can destroy seedling alfalfa. 10-15 per square foot can destroy 12” tall plants.

• Wheat: Larval “window-paning” in early planted wheat can be a concern. If 25-30% of plants show damage, examine field frequently. Treat at 2-3 active larvae/ft.

CAMPBELL: Fall armyworm activity in Kansas

For the past two weeks, the Barton County Commission has referred to Chris Schartz as interim director of the county's Road and Bridge Department. Tuesday morning, Schartz was officially promoted to director of county works. County Administrator Matt Patzner made the announcement.

"He's a Claflin native," Patzner said. "He's been employed with Road and Bridge since 2019. We conducted interviews the week before last. We had a few very good interviews but Chris really stood out. We were very impressed with his ideas and the direction he wants to take the Road and Bridge and Noxious Weed Department."

Commission Chair Barb Esfeld reiterated that Schartz was not selected merely because he was already a member of the department but because of his interview and reputation within the department. Schartz was pleased to accept the new role.

"Thank you for this opportunity," he said. "I will do the best I possibly can do and get the department to run as efficiently as I can, and keep our roads as nice as they can be."

Schartz replaces Darren Williams, who has transitioned into a new role as facilities director. Williams has worked for the county for more than two decades and served as Road and Bridge Director since 2017.
