The Golden Belt Community Concert Association will welcome a well-known “phantom” of Broadway fame Jeremy Stolle to the GBCCA stage for the third concert of this season. The concert is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, in the Great Bend Municipal Auditorium, Lakin and Stone.

Having spent more than a decade cast as the phantom in “The Phantom of the Opera,” Stolle will perform songs from that Broadway musical and others during this concert. “No more talk of darkness,” famous words from “The Phantom,” describe this evening performance.

Stolle, with his unparalleled voice and extensive musicianship, has assembled an unmatched team of musical artists to perform a night packed with show-stopping Broadway songs, soaring high notes, classic music, and hilarious stories of the Great White Way.

A native of Modesto, Calif., Stolle has starred in many different shows including Disney’s “Hunchback of Notre Dame,” “The Music Man,” “Carousel, “Jekyll and Hyde” and “Brigadoon.”

This GBCCA event is open to association members. No single concert tickets are available. Because the association encourages young people’s interest in music and the performing arts, full-time students are admitted for a $5 donation at the door.

Handicap parking spaces are available on the south and west sides of the auditorium, plus eight handicap parking are provided at the northeast entrance of for every concert. Blue cones, placed at the curb before each space, designate handicap-only parking.

With more than 70% of the vote Tuesday in favor of the initiative, Great
Bend citizens decided to renew the half-cent sales tax that assists with
capital improvements, economic development and property tax reduction. There were 3,371 "yes" votes to renew the tax compared to 1,418 "no" votes.

Bringing
in over $2.3 million, based off 2023 tax numbers, the renewal plays a big role
in public safety, or fire and EMS upgrades. City Administrator Logan Burns said
20% of the sales tax goes to economic development.


"Not only from the capital improvements, the economic development side is big," said Burns. "There are so many events that get put on by this. Community Coordinator Christina Hayes and her events like Party in the Park...that's where some of this sales tax goes to help those events out."

For the rest of the tax, 45% goes toward capital improvements for fire and EMS
and 35% for property tax relief. 

With the renewal, Great Bend’s sales tax
remains 8.7%. Great Bend’s rate is lower than nearby towns like McPherson at 9%
and Hays at 9.25%.


"We're staying right there at 8.7%," said Burns. "El Dorado is at 7.5% and Hutchinson at 8.6%, from there you have Garden City and Dodge City where it just increases from there."

With property tax relief, the half-cent sales tax reduced Great Bend’s mill

Sales tax renewed; benefits to Great Bend going forward

There is usually a steady flow of volunteers moving in and out of the Meals on Wheels program in Great Bend. Monica Ravenstein, administrative assistant at Volunteers in Action, said there have been fewer new volunteers signing up. Volunteering to deliver meals to homebound seniors can be a good way to give back to the community.

"It is very rewarding," Ravenstein said. "We're not just about making sure they get food, but we're also about checking in on them, making sure they're doing okay - knocking on that door and having that face-to-face contact."

Barton County Meals on Wheels serves approximately 100 clients in Great Bend, Hoisington, and Ellinwood, with some 80 percent of those clients located within Great Bend city limits. Meals, which are prepped by the Great Bend Senior Center, are delivered from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday as long as the Senior Center is open. Volunteers have a lot of freedom to choose when they deliver, and Get Connected volunteer management software makes organization simple.

"Once they've signed up, it gives them all the information," said Ravenstein. "They can click on what things they're interested in, Meals on Wheels being one of those. When something pops up, maybe we need a sub one day because somebody is sick, it will go to their email address and give them that communication."

Meals on Wheels drivers must be 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license. Ride-a-long options may be available to volunteers younger than 18. For more information about volunteering, contact Volunteers in Action at (620) 792-1614.

Barton CC recognizes employees for years of service

Kansas State University agronomists have tapped the powerful world of digital technology to make more than four decades worth of crop information almost instantly available to farmers via their phones or home computers. Cropping systems agronomist Ignacio Ciampitti and the director for research for the Institute of Digital Agriculture and Advanced Analytics (ID3A), says this new site means that yield and other valuable information may now be available within hours of university researchers harvesting crops from Kansas fields. Farmers decide what hybrids to plant the following year during or right after this year’s harvest. A problem we’ve had in the past is that the results of K-State’s crop performance tests have not been made available for two or three months until data was processed and all publications were printed. There was a need to transform how the data was shared so that the information is available immediately, easier for farmers to digest, and more visual.

The Kansas State University Institute of Digital Agriculture and Advanced Analytics, integrated with Dr. Ciampitti’s research lab (led by Pedro Cisdeli), has created a website called Analysis and Visualization of Crop Yield Trials – or AVYield – that will pack 40 years of K-State crop performance tests and other information into easy-to-read formats for farmers. The online tool is located at https://www.avyield.com. Jane Lingenfelser, an assistant agronomist and coordinator of the university’s crop performance tests each year, said she routinely advises producers to research as many data sources as possible when making decisions on crop varieties to plant. But we haven’t provided the tools for them to do that fully until now. There’s no cost or risk to researching all production options. Using this new tool, switching between crops in a specific growing location is very easy. For example, it is possible to immediately see how canola performed overall and which hybrid performed the best in south central Kansas, without devoting the land or expense to a new enterprise.

K-State’s database makes more than 40 years of data available for most crops – including canola, corn, sorghum, soybean, sunflower, and wheat. With a few on-screen clicks, farmers can find information based on variety, rainfed versus irrigated production, and geographic location within the state. This online resource is available at no cost to producers and researchers.

K-State canola breeder Mike Stamm has also made available the results of the National Winter Canola Variety trials, which his program coordinates at 30 locations in the United States. The collection dates back to the mid-1990s. “We live in an information-rich society, and we are used

to having the information immediately available,” Stamm said. “Sometimes, some of the most important work we do is not readily available because it takes time to analyze, write, review, and publish. We still need to publish our results, to show progress in our programs…but easier and more immediate access to the results will drive impact on our farms.” Kansas Corn provided funding to build AVYield, in collaboration with the Institute of Digital Agriculture and Advanced Analytics, which was introduced in late September during Celebrate Ag Day at K-State’s home football game against Oklahoma State.

“We are one of the first groups in the country to introduce these types of tools,” Ciampitti said. “The beauty of it is that much of the research information we produce related to crop production doesn’t take too long to get to farmers. Now, they can make their final decisions on planting crops based on information and visualization coming from this tool.”

With a few on-screen clicks, farmers can find information based on variety, rainfed versus irrigated production, and geographic location within the state. This online resource is available at no cost to producers and researchers.K-State canola breeder Mike Stamm has also made available the results of the National Winter Canola Variety trials, which his program coordinates at 30 locations in the United States. The collection dates back to the mid-1990s. “We live in an information-rich society, and we are usedto having the information immediately available,” Stamm said. “Sometimes, some of the most important work we do is not readily available because it takes time to analyze, write, review, and publish. We still need to publish our results, to show progress in our programs…but easier and more immediate access to the results will drive impact on our farms.” Kansas Corn provided funding to build AVYield, in collaboration with the Institute of Digital Agriculture and Advanced Analytics, which was introduced in late September during Celebrate Ag Day at K-State’s home football game against Oklahoma State.“We are one of the first groups in the country to introduce these types of tools,” Ciampitti said. “The beauty of it is that much of the research information we produce related to crop production doesn’t take too long to get to farmers. This program aims to inspire Barton County residents to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset, building on the success of the IGNITE Rural Business competition and the high demand for entrepreneurial education in the community. The first class is offered free of charge and provides a valuable opportunity for prospective entrepreneurs to experience the course content and environment.

Thanks to support from NetWork Kansas, these classes will be affordable and accessible, helping to reduce barriers for aspiring entrepreneurs. NetWork Kansas, recognized for fostering entrepreneurship and economic growth, shares the mission of Great Bend Economic Development to deliver practical resources that empower individuals exploring business opportunities.

This year’s classes will be co-facilitated by Jim Correll, Executive Director of the Innovative Business Resource Center, and Kimberly Becker, an ICE House Certified facilitator and entrepreneur. Jim Correll will participate in person for the first and final sessions and join other classes via Zoom, offering expert insights and support.

Classes are scheduled for every Wednesday from January 8 to February 12, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Great Bend Economic Development Offices inside the Great Bend Events Center. Participants will engage in dynamic discussions, watch video content, and explore thought-provoking readings from&nbsp;Who Owns the Ice House?, a book inspired by the story of entrepreneur Clifton Taulbert. Local entrepreneurs will also join the sessions to share firsthand insights on the rewards and challenges of entrepreneurship.

Great Bend Eco Devo presents Entrepreneurial Mindset classes

Those looking for an interactive art experience will get a chance when the Shafer Gallery unveils its “Sunlight and Brushstrokes” exhibit with a come-and-go workshop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Gallery, and a reception at 6:30 p.m. that evening, which will feature light refreshments and a gallery talk from artist Jessie Rasche.

Gallery Director Alyssa Bliven and said Rasche is a professional painter known for her expressive use of oils and connection to the rural landscape.

“The event will kick off with morning Edge Work workshops focusing on charcoal techniques, followed by afternoon sessions in water-mixable oil paints, generously supplied by Royal Talens North America through their artist sponsorship,” she said. “Jessie will guide participants through her creative process, offering insights from her 17-year journey as a professional artist, including her inspirations from rural South Dakota.”

According to&nbsp;<a href="https://jessierasche.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">jessierasche.com</a>, “Jessie Rasche is a professional artist who paints in her Brookings home studio, and out on dusty farm roads. Growing up in Seattle as the only child of an artist, Jessie got a lot of encouragement for her creative endeavors, and studied Fine Art at the Pacific Northwest College of Art. Even so, a career path as an artist wasn’t clear and Jessie went back to school in Psychology and general sciences before a short career in social work, and then as an illustrator and media developer. Sixteen years ago, with family encouragement, Jessie followed her dreams of becoming a professional artist, and began selling her small paintings online and through galleries. In 2013 she moved to South Dakota with her family. Living in a rural landscape surrounded by cow pastures and flocking birds inspired her to begin a series of paintings about groups of animals and how they connect to each other and the land.&nbsp; Through a painterly use of oils, Jessie expresses a love of the materials as well as the subject matter, and she teaches painting workshops for artists, both online and in person.”&nbsp;

Shafer Gallery to host reception 'Sunlight and Brushstrokes' exhibit

On Wednesday, Nov. 6, at about 10 a.m., Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies and detectives executed a search warrant at 414 N. Elm Street in Hoisington. The Sheriff’s Office was looking for Richard Kerns, age 65, who is a registered drug offender from Russell County and failed to notify Barton County officials he was living here. 

Upon entry into the residence, deputies located Kerns and placed him under arrest. During the course of the incident, detectives discovered suspected methamphetamine inside the house. Also arrested at the scene was Bev Driscoll, age 66 of Hoisington.

Both Driscoll and Kerns are being held on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine. Kerns is also charged with failing to register as a drug offender in the local jurisdiction. Both are being held in lieu of a $10,000 bond. 

Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Hoisington Police Department.

In 2000, Robert Putnam released his book "Bowling Alone," in which he hypothesizes that the loss of bowling leagues and engagement in other community-oriented clubs has created a civic crisis in the United States. The book is the subject of the "Join or Die" documentary now available on Netflix. At Tuesday's Barton County Commission meeting, before election results were released, Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson also encouraged people to get more engaged.

"I've noticed there's almost a generation change happening in our community right now," he said. "It's a cultural and a generational change. I would just like to invite people, the younger generation, the best and brightest, to get involved in the community. There are a lot of ways to get involved that can make a major difference that don't require a lot of time and effort."

Hutchinson pointed out the many uncontested races on Tuesday's ballot, including his own race for District 3 on the commission, and the District 2 race in which Commission Chair Barb Esfeld ran uncontested. He encouraged community members to run for local offices or join advisory and steering committees.

"As I've gotten involved over the last several years, I've noticed the same 20 people on every board throughout the communities," he said. "I'm not putting those people down because, holy cow, we wouldn't even have boards if not for them. But I think a lot of them are willing to pass the torch and I think now is the time to step up."

Several commissioners agreed with Hutchinson, who encouraged young people who may be interested in civic engagement to contact him if they have questions about how they can help their communities.

Kansas Wetlands Education Center Director Curtis Wolf said ducks and geese remain numerous at the Bottoms, and many sandhill cranes have been spotted and heard. Several whooping cranes have been spotted recently at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge in Stafford County.

"If people aren't aware, these are still probably the most endangered bird in North America," Wolf said. "Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira are one of the best places for people from anywhere to be able to see them."

The tallest birds in North America at more than five feet tall, five whooping cranes were spotted at the refuge on Oct. 27-28. A group of 10 was spotted on Halloween morning.

"Typically, there are least some that stop in at both Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira every fall and spring, but the fall tends to be the better time to see them," Wolf said. "They're not in such a hurry to pass through."

Just 15 whooping cranes were believed to be alive in 1941. There are now an estimated 831 whoopers worldwide, including just over 500 in the wild.

The Great Bend City Council Monday night approved the bids for the parts
and labor to install battery backups on a number of traffic lights, mostly on
10th Street. 

January of this year, the City of Great Bend received a
grant through the Kansas Department of Transportation to assist with the majority
of the expense. Great Bend Public Works Director Jason Cauley said the city
received two bids.


"We did try to reach out to more people," said Cauley. "There were only two received for the labor. Nobody else was able to get bids back to us in a timely manner. This is one of the reasons it has taken so long to bring it to council."

A bid from Gades for the parts was approved for $54,835. Hammeke Electric will
handle the labor for $22,550 for a total project cost of $77,385. The
Innovative Technologies Grant will cover more than 75% of the expense, leaving
Great Bend’s share at $19,600.


The backup batteries will be installed at all traffic lights along 10th
Street, allowing the lights to remain operational even when electricity is
knocked out. Batteries will also be used at the Broadway Avenue and Washington
intersection and at Broadway and Patton Road.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend High School singers named to District Honor Choir

Fall is a wonderful season for agriculture and a time to, hopefully, reap the bounty of the year’s production.&nbsp; If producers have access to crop residue fields following grain harvest, then preparing to turn cattle out to graze such acres is one task that deserves to be near the top of the priority list.&nbsp; Grain sorghum represents an excellent opportunity to extend the grazing season.&nbsp; However, there are several important management considerations that need to be kept in mind with grazing sorghum residue.

Understandably, the absence of fences and water sources is one of the biggest limitations for residue grazing.&nbsp; Many acres are grown in rain-fed systems in which sourcing water from an irrigation well is not possible.&nbsp; Likewise, hauling water long distances is usually not practical.&nbsp; However, if water can be supplied and temporary fences put up, then grazing sorghum residues is usually economical.&nbsp; A single strand of electric fence can work quite well for keeping cows contained, while 2 or more strands may be needed for small calves.

Unlike actively growing forages, both the quantity and quality of residue available for grazing will be highest immediately following harvest and will steadily decline over time due to weathering, trampling, and consumption by cattle. Regarding forage quantity, field data indicate about 2.5 to 3.0 tons of residue per acre on average is produced following harvest.&nbsp; If accounting for 50% of the total residue on the field as available for grazing and of that amount 50% was utilized, then one acre would supply enough forage for one gestating cow for approximately 50 to 60 days.&nbsp;High amounts of grain on the surface of the field pose a risk of acidosis, particularly for animals with experience grazing residue fields. Cattle selectively graze and will seek out and consume any grain present first.&nbsp; The degree to which grain in the field poses a risk is dependent on many factors, but levels greater than 10 to 15 bushels per acre generally require additional caution.&nbsp; Avoiding turning hungry animals directly on to fields by filling them up on forage, strip grazing to reduce the amount grain available per animal, supplementing low amounts of grain initially before turning them out, and feeding sodium bicarbonate as a rumen buffer are all strategies that may be used to decrease risk of acidosis.

Nitrate and prussic acid toxicity are both conditions that increase in prevalence due to plant stress and cause asphyxiation in the animal, yet are distinctly independent from each other.&nbsp; Nitrates accumulate in the base of the stalk or stem, and while issues associated with nitrate toxicity are generally less common in grazing situations as compared to when cattle are fed a diet, for this reason it is critical to manage stocking rate so that cattle are not forced to consume the lower 1/3rd&nbsp;of the stalk or stem.&nbsp; Prussic acid can occur in plant species within the broader sorghum family, and primarily accumulates in young, rapidly growing plant tissue.&nbsp; Therefore, avoiding grazing sorghum residue around a frost event and for the first 7 days following a killing freeze is a sound practice. Just as with harvested forages, representative samples of standing forage can be collected for analysis of nitrate and prussic acid to determine risk levels and guide management decisions.

All present Central Kansas Christian Academy (CKCA) students and staff in Great Bend voted Tuesday, Nov. 5. The final numbers were 70 for Donald Trump and eight to Kamala Harris. 

The school also did a couple of fun questions like “Favorite way to spend free time” and “Favorite CKCA meal." Favorite way to spend time was watching television with second as reading. Favorite CKCA meal was nachos with second as pizza.

Great Bend school's students 'vote' for Trump, TV and nachos

The City of Great Bend Street crews will begin work at 1615 10th, the Front Door Building, on the north drive on Nov. 12. There will be repairs on an area in front of the drive in the outside, eastbound drive lane. 

The city will have traffic control set up for one lane for eastbound traffic. Since this is the Front Door building, if you need access to pay your water bill or discuss any other business related to the office, you will have access through the west drive or east drive. 

Great Bend officials expect the work to take approximately two weeks for the labor and the time for the concrete to set up for traffic. Please be attentive and aware as the city works to make repairs in the area.&nbsp;
