K-State research breaks down wheat variety performance for dual-purpose systems

As Kansas farmers pour over field trial data to select which varieties to plant this fall, new guidance is available for those considering adding or expanding fall grazing on wheat acres. K-State Research and Extension recently released the results of trials for 16 wheat varieties for performance in dual-purpose systems where wheat is grown for both forage and grain production.&nbsp;

Logically, the traits needed for a wheat variety to succeed in a dual-purpose system differ from programs focused solely on grain production. These performance trials evaluated commonly understood factors of fall grazing like the date of the first hollow stem as well as fall forage yield, plant height, grain yield and test weight.&nbsp;

To do so, K-State researchers planted three trials in the South Central Experiment Field near Hutchinson. One trial followed grain-only management practices, while the other two trials simulated dual-purpose management. These trials included an earlier planting date with a higher seeding rate and increased nitrogen applications.&nbsp;

The first dual-purpose trial assessed forage yield and date of the first hollow stem. Fall forage production depends on variety selection, environmental factors&nbsp;-—&nbsp;temperature and precipitation&nbsp;-—&nbsp;and management decisions&nbsp;-—&nbsp;planting date, seeding rate and nitrogen application rate.&nbsp;

To measure forage yield, researchers hand-clipped and dried samples before weighing and measuring the remaining dry matter. The team found significant statistical differences in fall forage production between the tested varieties, ranging from 871 to 1,969 pounds of dry matter per acre. Eleven of the 16 varieties were considered high-yielding&nbsp;-—&nbsp;1,370 to 1,969 pounds of dry matter per acre&nbsp;-—&nbsp;including KS Ahearn and KS Providence.&nbsp;

To balance the use of that forage potential with future grain yield potential, producers with a dual-purpose system use the date of the first hollow stem as an indicator of when to stop grazing. Grazing past that first hollow stem date can decrease yields by as much as one to five percent per day. While the appearance of the first hollow stem is driven by decreasing temperatures and day length, individual varieties can differ by up to 15 to 20 days.&nbsp;

Researchers measured the first hollow stem by splitting 10 primary stems from each plot one or two times per week, stopping when all measured stems had 1.5 centimeters of hollow stem below the developing wheat head. Results were reported in day-of-year format with the average occurrence of the first hollow stem on day 76 or March 17. All the studied varieties reached the first hollow stem within an 11-day window, with KS Providence being the latest variety to achieve the first hollow stem at day 83.&nbsp;

After producers stop grazing, their focus turns to maximizing grain production. The second dual-purpose trial explored the penalties for grazing wheat fields come harvest.&nbsp;

First, researchers simulated grazing by mowing plants to 1.5 inches whenever regrowth hit two inches. This happened five times before researchers stopped the simulated grazing at the average first hollow stem date. The team then measured plant height for the rest of the grazing season and harvested the grain from the trial.&nbsp;

For the grain-only trial, yields averaged 53.5 bushels per acre, compared to 28.1 bushels per acre in the dual-purpose trial&nbsp;-—&nbsp;meaning the yield penalty from simulated grazing averaged 13.6 bushels per acre. The penalty for varieties averaged from 6.9 to 19.7 bushels per acre with the highest-yielding group including AR Iron Eagle 22AX, CP7017AX, Guardian, Golden Hawk and WB4347.&nbsp;

Test weights also varied between varieties, ranging from 55.1 to 62.7 pounds per bushel in the grain-only system to 49.5 to 67.1 pounds per bushel in the dual-purpose trial. Guardian ranked as the highest test weight in both systems, whereas AP Sunbird (experimental) ranked highest in the grain-only trial and WB4347 took the top spot in the dual-purpose system.&nbsp;

Researchers noted that weather conditions&nbsp;-—&nbsp;fall moisture and a dry spring&nbsp;-—&nbsp;also impacted final grain yields and test weights.&nbsp;

“The weather conditions&nbsp;–—&nbsp;characterized by enough moisture for forage production followed by drought conditions during the spring&nbsp;–—&nbsp;likely worsened the effects of grazing since the larger crop likely used more water early in the season and had no moisture to recover later in the spring,” the publication noted.&nbsp;

Overall, the K-State evaluation provides valuable insights for producers looking to balance needs for additional forage with the goal of a successful summer harvest. The publication is part of the Wheat Rx series, a partnership between Kansas Wheat and K-State Research and Extension to disseminate the latest research recommendations for high-yielding and high-quality wheat to Kansas wheat farmers.&nbsp;

On a recent afternoon west of Great Bend, Martin hummed along as packaged cases of Fuller Industries commercial cleaning products rattled along the conveyor belt and came to halt. The job involved taking those boxes and stacking them on to an awaiting wooden pallet.

But, Martin, unlike other Fuller personnel, is really just a robot, more specifically, a huge robotic arm. Its “hand” clamps onto each box and swings it around then sets it in place.

“He’s staying pretty busy today,” said Austin, his human operator from just outside the caged area. He eyed the constant flow of cardboard containers rolling down the nearly one-mile-long conveyor system overhead connecting his workstation to production in another part of the plant.

While Martin was installed in late 2021, its arrival heralded the company’s push to modernize the half-century-old factory as it expands its operations and product offerings. On the cutting edge of utilizing water-soluble pod technology for delivering cleaning products, Fuller will soon have additional state-of-the-art equipment on site allowing the growth of this process.

“We are really looking to the future,” said Joe Mann, Fuller vice president and general manager. “Our priority is to make sure Fuller continues to stay in step with market and technological trends.

“Fuller is a Great Bend-based company with an international reach,” Mann said. “The products we make here find their way all over the Western Hemisphere.”

In addition, it has recently taken over production formerly handled by another plant owned by its parent company. GDI. And, Fuller continues to eye other expansion opportunities, Mann said.

But it hasn’t been all smooth sailing, thanks to the fickle and down-right nasty Kansas weather.

Last July 16 is a day that lives in infamy at Fuller. That is when a sever hailstorm ripped through the area, taking much of the building’s roof with it.

In the wake of that storm, Fuller faced and is still facing a long, painful recovery. Clean-up and remodeling are continuing, and have slowed some progress, Mann said.

Another hold-up has been finding enough employees, he said. “Like any other business, we are really wanting to hire folks, but need more applicants. So, although we are investing in automation, we are not displacing employees. We will continue to expand our team, especially for roles that require specialized mechanical and technical skills.”

“We are proud of our heritage in Great Bend,” Mann said. “We are committed to continuing and strengthening our relationship with the community.”

Fuller looking for employees, tapping tech to help

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep pets away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. A&nbsp;Hazard status&nbsp;indicates that a harmful algal bloom is present, and extreme conditions exist.&nbsp;

A&nbsp;Watch status&nbsp;means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.

&nbsp;When a watch is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

Advisories are&nbsp;Lifted&nbsp;when cell densities and toxin concentrations dissipate to levels below the Watch thresholds.

KDHE investigates publicly accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.&nbsp;

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

Pawnee Valley Community Hospital (PVCH) in Larned is honoring the request of the local and area community for more convenient hours of operation in the Imaging Department.

“The majority of our imaging services are now available beginning at 7:30 a.m., depending on the test involved,” said Julie Robben, Director of Imaging. “Now they can schedule Imaging appointments for earlier in the morning before their workday begins.

“This is just one more example of how our hospital responds to the needs of the community whenever possible.”

While x-rays and CT scans are available 24/7 for emergencies, the regular weekday schedule offers x-ray, CT, dexa scans, nuclear medicine and mammography starting at 7:30 a.m. Ultrasound and MRI start at 8 a.m.

“We have been offering these expanded hours for only a short time but are already hearing good feedback from patients and families,” Robben commented.

She also noted that “Pawnee Valley Community Hospital prides itself on having state-of-the-art equipment that allows us to provide the same high quality imaging locally that you would receive at a larger facility.”

Because this high-tech equipment is available locally and patients don’t have to travel, physicians can offer a diagnosis in a timelier manner, Robben added.

In
2021, in the aftermath of unfounded accusations of election fraud, the Kansas
legislature passed a series of laws making it harder for citizens to vote. One
bill, HB 2183, included a false representation provision, which made it a
felony for an individual to “represent oneself as an election official” or
“engage in conduct that gives the appearance of being an election official”.

This
bill effectively limited voter registration drives in the state.

From
the beginning, this bill sparked great concern among nonpartisan voter advocacy
organizations — like the League of Women Voters who challenged the bill in
court — as it relies on individual understanding (or misunderstanding).

For
example, if a group was running a voter registration drive at a local farmer’s
market, even if they did nothing to indicate they were an election official,
one person’s misunderstanding that the group was representing such an official
could result in felony charges.

Clearly,
this law is overly broad and incredibly vague.

The
Kansas Supreme Court agreed, concluding that the law criminalizes “honest
speech” that may be protected as political speech under the Kansas Bill of
Rights. The Court ruled that the law would be blocked until further court
hearings could take place and their language seemed to indicate that the law
very likely violates the state constitution.

This
is a huge win for voter advocacy groups across the state.

Laws
that suppress voter registration make it harder for eligible Kansans to
participate in elections. which undermines free and fair access to the ballot
box.

These strict voting rules also make voting disproportionately difficult
for communities of color and other marginalized groups — the poor, the less
educated, those who have criminal records — and those who are new to the voting
process like young people and new immigrants. 

One pillar of democracy is the holding of free and fair elections that
allow voters to choose their representatives. But voter suppression laws shift
that power and allow for representatives to choose their voters by creating
more barriers to the ballot box, especially among underrepresented groups.

Voter registration drives are democracy in action, and I can’t wait to
see them return in full force this fall.

WSU’s campus wearing the “ask me how to register to vote” t-shirt I bought to
celebrate the Court’s ruling.

Eagle Radio's news week in review

Cool temperatures and a cool prize. Eagle Media's car giveaway took place Friday night in Hoisington where Brandt Stewart, from Hoisington, took home the grand prize.

The Trax to the Max giveaway, presented by Sutherlands, Farmer's Bank &amp; Trust, Eldridge Fencing and Ehler Chevrolet...Together let's drive, had 87 finalists entered into the contest to win a 2024 Chevy Trax.

After eliminating finalists Friday at Ehler Chevrolet, Stewart had the final ping pong ball left in the machine. Stewart registered at Hoisington Veterinary Hospital and had ping pong ball #67. Casey Winter, from McPherson, finished as the runner-up.

"This is so awesome," said Stewart. "Thank you to everyone. I felt lucky and that I had pretty good odds coming in tonight."

The giveaway began in April, as Eagle Media staff took registration boxes to various participating sponsors on Instant Finalist Days to get their 87 finalists.

If W.B. Yeats words, “Education is not the filling of a pot but the lighting of the fire,” then a score of house finches lit the match that led me to discover fascinating facts about our corn patch. Nature offers intriguing lessons when we inquire.

Instruction began as our corn tasseled a few weeks ago. Scores of house finches descended on fresh tassels, nibbling and tugging at serrated edges that distribute pollen. Flocks returned morning and evening to gorge on their tasty treat. Their behavior triggered me to research why wild finches crave corn pollen.

While I didn’t find an answer to that question, the search led to a world of discovery for me. Every day, I watch pollinators zip from one blossom to another in our garden, delivering essential DNA info to pumpkins, tomatoes, cantaloupe, zucchinis, cucumbers, potatoes, and flowers. Amazingly I never wondered how corn fertilized. Those feisty finches and their stellar teaching technique remedied that lack of curiosity.

Thank goodness we live in an age where an inquisitive mind can retrieve info with the click of a computer key. After several days of wondering why tiny birds kept returning to nibble our corn tassels, I googled answers.

The first hour led down multiple bunny trails, none of which addressed my question. However, it did direct me to sites that explain corn pollination and how it differs from other plants. Of course, I now have more questions, but cold weather arrives soon with time to explore when outside weather isn’t calling my name.

Unfortunately, I found no satisfaction regarding finches eating pollen other than they eat seeds. Dangly parts on corn tassels resemble seeds. What I did learn was that corn’s widely separated male and female reproductive parts that typically depend on wind transfer of pollen to ovule differ from most other plants.

As you check your own corn or drive about the countryside examining cornfields, consider a plant that humans began manipulating thousands of years ago. What is now a tall plant with a thick stalk originated much smaller with fewer seeds to either eat or plant.

Now, hybridized tall, thick stems commonly produce one to two ears containing up to 1000 ovules. Corn kernels result from the 400 to 700 that successfully fertilize, leading me to wonder how many ears does the Green Giant require to fill a 16 oz. can? The real miracle involves transferring pollen from those tassels rising feet above ovules enclosed in a husk.

I always wondered why corn has inedible silks. Think back to grade school science and plant pollination. Silks sprout out of each ovary on each ear and serve as stigma and style of female blossoms. That frothy eruption of fine strands delivers pollen that blows, falls, or gets shaken off by hungry finches onto an individual silk which then transports it to an ovary where it turns into a corn kernel. Interestingly, I learned that once pollen delivery takes place, silks detach. In theory, humans can test nature’s success by gently tugging those fibers days before they harvest corn.

Before this investigation, growing and processing corn offered enjoyable means to produce a favorite food. As a bonus, we liked watching it grow and attract birds to the garden. Now that I know more, I’m impressed with one more of the many ways the Good Lord has of making sure His creatures eat well.

An investigation was conducted from the public right-of-way on the
accessory structure at 1441 9th Street in Great Bend, a property
owned by Thomas Pearson. The Great Bend City Council held a public hearing for
the dangerous building Monday night. 

Assistant City Administrator Logan Burns
said the building official’s letter referenced multiple deficiencies.


"This was a gable garage," said Burns. "All the sheeting is missing on the south side. All the trusses fell to the south. The gable is laying on the ground. You'll see the siding is missing."

The roof of the structure on 9th Street has collapsed. The rafters
and roof structure are also hanging into the alley.


The city council voted to set a date of Sept. 7 for the
structure to be repaired or demolished before the city decides to tear it down.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Drought-stressed crops tend to accumulate high nitrate levels in the lower leaves and stalk of the plant. Crops such as forage and grain sorghum, sudangrass, hybrid sorghum-sudan, and pearl millet are notorious accumulators. Nitrates accumulate in the lower portion of these plants when stresses reduce crop yields to less than expected, based on the supplied nitrogen fertility level. Nitrate toxicity in livestock is caused by its absorption into the bloodstream and binding to hemoglobin, rendering it unable to carry oxygen throughout the body. The result is eventual asphyxiation and death.&nbsp;

Animals under stress (sick, hungry, lactating, or pregnant) are more susceptible to nitrate toxicity than healthy animals. Toxicity is related to the total amount of forage consumed and how quickly it is eaten. Generally, forages containing more than 6,000 ppm nitrate should be considered potentially toxic. Symptoms of toxicity may appear within a few hours after eating or not for several days. Signs include reduced appetite, weight loss, diarrhea, and runny eyes.

It is wise for producers to test their drought-stricken forage prior to harvest. Nitrate testing can be done through several labs, including the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.agronomy.k-state.edu/outreach-and-services/soil-testing-lab/plant-forage-grain-analysis/producers.html">K-State Soil Testing Laboratory</a>. Not all labs use the same testing procedure so be sure to use the scale provided by the testing lab. Harvesting the forage 6-to-12 inches above the ground to avoid the highest concentrations of nitrate in the plant is a good practice. Producers should collect a good representative forage sample above this cutting height to get an accurate determination of the nitrate concentration. It's important to consider factors like actual nitrate concentration, storing and feeding methods, and forage availability, as these can significantly impact the safety of your livestock. Toxicity is related to the total amount of nitrate in the diet and how quickly it is eaten. Generally, if forages contain more than 6,000 ppm nitrate, they should be considered potentially toxic.

Depending on the planned feeding method, a producer may wish to test different parts of the plant. If wrapping the forage into a bale and feeding it directly to livestock, a producer may want to test the lowest part of the stalk to determine the greatest risk of nitrate forage that the animal could ingest. If a producer was planning on grinding the bale, a whole plant sample above what will be left in the field may be a more accurate representation of what will be eaten. High-nitrate forages chopped for silage and properly ensiled are a safer option for livestock feeding. During the ensiling process, potentially 50 percent of the nitrates in the forage will be metabolized by the microbes and can vastly reduce the risk of poisoning.

Grazing high nitrate forages can be a dangerous practice. This option requires very careful management. Grazing pressure should be limited so that animals do not consume the parts of the plant forage testing has shown to be dangerous. Although animals tend to consume the leaves and the top portions of the plant, which contain less nitrates, the risk of consuming a high-nitrate portion of the plant still exists. Pawnee Rock is set to be a hub of activity on Saturday, Aug. 10. The second annual Pawnee Rock Hard Rock Race  and 1-mile Fun Walk begin at 7:30 a.m. Pawnee Rock Revitalization Project Chairperson Denise Penn said the name is no accident.

"We call it the Hard Rock Run because it is a 5K," she said. "It's up a hill, down a hill, up a hill, up and around the Rock. It's quite hilly and quite challenging, but fun. We also have the 1-mile Fun Walk, which just goes from downtown, up and around the Rock, and back down for fun."

Pre-registration is available online through Friday, Aug. 9 <a href="https://pawneerockhardrockrun.racewire.com/register.php?id=14156">(CLICK HERE)</a>. The cost is $20 for the 5K and $15 for the 1-mile event. Add $5 for day-of registration which begins at 7 a.m. Funds benefit the Revitalization Project, which continues its efforts to improve downtown Pawnee Rock with sidewalk and parking improvements planned.

"In the past, we have used those funds along with other donors' funds, along with the Golden Belt Foundation contributions, as well as the Barton County Commissioner contributions to create a gazebo, a gathering spot in the park in downtown," Penn said.

There will be no breakfast before the run this year as attendees are encouraged to stop at the Depot for a donation-based breakfast from 8-10 a.m. As part of the Pawnee Rock All School Reunion, class pictures, annuals, and other memorabilia will also be available to view.

From 1-3 p.m., enjoy a hamburger or hot dog lunch for a $5 donation at the Pawnee Rock Fire Department. Attendees can meet the volunteer firefighters, see the equipment, and vote for and watch a firefighter take a pie to the face.

Josh Webb saved the Kanopolis Drive In when he reopened the facility in 2011, five years after the last time it was open. A strong storm in 2021 again threatened to close the facility, which was shut down for the 2022 season but returned in 2023. Business at one of the last remaining drive-ins around the state is booming in 2024, thanks in part to some big titles, but also because of Webb's revamped use of social media. 

"Prior to this year, I kept it nice and boring and mundane," he said. "Just the facts. This year, I was trying to do something fun with it and inject a little humor into it. That's kind of what Facebook is good for is satire, humor, and getting the word out. People have really responded to some of the posts."

Webb's posts now include jokes about the concession stand menu (somehow, they are usually out of Peking Duck and Alaskan King Crab), local events, the movies, and behavior that is expected at a drive-in theater. His posts are routinely shared more than 60 times now, helping drive in a regional crowd for the double features that are shown each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night during movie season, which is typically the first weekend of April through Labor Day.

"It's almost like families will tell other families," Webb said. "We'll see one family from Lyons, then we'll see their friends the next weekend. It's kind of odd how it works. They'll put it on Facebook that they were there. Someone else will see it and take their kids."

As the drive-in's webpage says, the theater uses a 60-foot screen to display its movies. Whereas indoor theaters have switches to dim their house lights, the drive-in "has to wait for God to dim ours." 

"We'll usually open the gates at 7 or 8 p.m., depending on when it gets dark," Webb said. "We try to open an hour before dark hits. That's usually enough time for people to get flooded in and get through the concession stand."

The Kanopolis Drive In is now fully digital. Audio can be heard by tuning to 101.1 FM on a radio. For those who want to watch from a lawn chair or the benches near the screen, the Drive In has that covered.

"Inside the concession stand, we have little portable FM radios," said Webb. "All you have to do is fill out a little piece of paper and leave a credit or debit card and you get your radio. We'll tune it for you and turn the volume up. You can take it out to your car and, as long as you bring it back, it's a free rental."

The drive-in cannot book movies in advance and Webb usually announces which movies are playing the Monday before the weekend. "Twisters" and "Deadpool &amp; Wolverine" are the features for the Aug. 9-11 dates. Webb said the drive-in will take a short break after the Labor Day weekend, then re-open for its all-night Monsterrama sometime in October.
