Barton to present holiday concert; Hall of Fame to be initiated

Next to the Barton County Courthouse in Great Bend, there is a statue
known as “The Rifleman.” The bronze soldier statue represents an eternal guard
in defense of the Union, from the Civil War in the 1860s. 

Barton County
Historical Society historian Justin Engleman said the monument was erected and
dedicated in 1915 for Ira Brougher, a soldier that paid for the sculpture after
settling in Kansas following the war. 

"This is supposed to be a representation of Ira Brougher, who was a Civil War veteran and lost his arm during the Battle of Antietam in 1862," said Engleman. "We definitely want to preserve it. There are names of every member of the Pap Thomas Post GAR. This is a 'who's who' of Barton County's founding."

The statue was sculpted by Frederick Hibbard from Chicago.

The Historical Society is looking to further recognize and highlight the statue
that was preserved and repaired in 2015 for the 100th anniversary of
the dedication. The $25,000 repairs was split amongst the City of Great Bend
and Historical Society.

"We want to do something to honor it. If someone has a brilliant idea, let me know."

Engleman said there is a very important reason the
statue faces the south, looking at the courthouse.


"It was because he was a Union soldier, so he's going south," said Engleman. "I'm part of committee where they're looking to do streetscape downtown, and they suggested the statue needs to be turned around facing away from the courthouse. I immediately said 'no, no, no, no.' He cannot be turned around."

The statue also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices soldiers made in the Civil
War and that of every soldier who has served our nation since.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau Board recognized, along with "The Rifleman," there needs to be consideration of a fund to preserve past and future murals, sculptures and art.

Tuesday's weather

During her years as a therapist, Jessica Blehm has counseled senior citizens as they navigate the winding road of life’s transitions.

At this time of year, she said that since understanding older people’s concerns may be especially important, she wanted to share some tips to help families during the holiday season.

Blehm, who also is a licensed specialist clinical social worker, sees clients at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, 5815 Broadway.

“For many older people, the holidays are not necessarily filled with comfort and joy,” Blehm said. “Instead, they are isolated and feel as though they have lost their role of being the hub of the wheel.

“In addition, their circle of family and friends is getting smaller; they miss the people who were once a big part of their lives. And sometimes it is a lack of mobility or other physical concerns.”

Cognition problems can play a role because “some older folks aren’t capable of being in the present moment,” she added. “In a room full of people talking about so-and-so, grandma doesn’t remember who so-and-so is.”

The older generation also misses long-time family traditions of gathering at a certain place on a certain day, eating the same menu and unwrapping presents in a particular way.

“In this day and age, many families are more spread out than they used to be and some traditions are no longer possible,” Blehm said. “But there are ways we can soften the blow.

“First, we need to acknowledge that change is difficult and scary for older people. They may be cranky, stuck in their old ways or just plain sad. We can comfort them

when we say ‘we are aware of how you feel and want to create some new traditions with you.’”

For example, ask older relatives to outline the steps to making their Christmas cookies. Or suggest they help compile the menu for Christmas dinner. Or suggest a new system for the gift exchange. Or all of the above.

“We also need to be aware that the older generation isn’t always comfortable with technology,” Blehm commented. “This is when you can set up a Face Time call with family members who couldn’t be there. Grandma and Grandpa could actually watch the kids open their presents.”

On the physical side of things, older relatives probably aren’t comfortable sitting in the same chair all day, Blehm noted. “We can recognize this and the older person can decide whether to stay or simply call it a day.

“The mind-body connection is so tied into all this,” she continued. “If I hurt emotionally and/or physically, I might be irritable. We simply need to engage the older generation in activities, while making time to hear their stories – even if you have heard them many times.”

 </figure>BUSINESS NEWSDuring her years as a therapist, Jessica Blehm has counseled senior citizens as they navigate the winding road of life’s transitions.At this time of year, she said that since understanding older people’s concerns may be especially important, she wanted to share some tips to help families during the holiday season.Blehm, who also is a licensed specialist clinical social worker, sees clients at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, 5815 Broadway.“For many older people, the holidays are not necessarily filled with comfort and joy,” Blehm said. “Instead, they are isolated and feel as though they have lost their role of being the hub of the wheel.“In addition, their circle of family and friends is getting smaller; they miss the people who were once a big part of their lives. And sometimes it is a lack of mobility or other physical concerns.”Cognition problems can play a role because “some older folks aren’t capable of being in the present moment,” she added. “In a room full of people talking about so-and-so, grandma doesn’t remember who so-and-so is.”The older generation also misses long-time family traditions of gathering at a certain place on a certain day, eating the same menu and unwrapping presents in a particular way.“In this day and age, many families are more spread out than they used to be and some traditions are no longer possible,” Blehm said. “But there are ways we can soften the blow.“First, we need to acknowledge that change is difficult and scary for older people. They may be cranky, stuck in their old ways or just plain sad. We can comfort themwhen we say ‘we are aware of how you feel and want to create some new traditions with you.’”For example, ask older relatives to outline the steps to making their Christmas cookies. Or suggest they help compile the menu for Christmas dinner. Or suggest a new system for the gift exchange. Or all of the above.“We also need to be aware that the older generation isn’t always comfortable with technology,” Blehm commented. “This is when you can set up a Face Time call with family members who couldn’t be there. Grandma and Grandpa could actually watch the kids open their presents.”On the physical side of things, older relatives probably aren’t comfortable sitting in the same chair all day, Blehm noted. “We can recognize this and the older person can decide whether to stay or simply call it a day.“The mind-body connection is so tied into all this,” she continued. “If I hurt emotionally and/or physically, I might be irritable. For the safety of the crew working and the safety of traffic, the city will have the intersection completely closed at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Please be aware of the need to avoid or reroute around the area. Sealed bids were accepted for either the entire amount ($1,463,440.00) of tax credits or an amount not less than $50,000 per bidder.

&nbsp; &nbsp;B. RISK MANAGEMENT AND INSURANCE PROVIDER: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Mr. Patzner will provide details. On November 19, 2024, the Commissioner interviewed personnel from KCAMP / KWORCC and Copeland Insurance. The firms were asked to provide details on liability and property coverage, as well as workers compensation, for Operational Year 2025.

&nbsp; &nbsp;C. OCCUPANCY AGREEMENT: 12th and Kansas, Great Bend: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Mr. Patzner will provide details. As a means of community support, the State of Kansas Parole office is housed in the County office building at 1208 Kansas, Great Bend. This agency reimburses Barton County for a portion of the building’s utility costs. The proposed agreement is set to expire December 31, 2025.

In 2021, Barton County sought grant data analysis, evaluation and reporting services for the Improving Reentry for Adults with Substance Use Disorders Program grant award from the Office of Justice Programs (O.J.P.), U.S. Department of Justice. The Learning Tree Institute at Greenbush was contracted at that time to perform needed services. It is suggested that the subaward agreement be extended to September, 2025. Monies are available in the grant for the $38,601.00 fee, which is set as a not to exceed limit for services provided.

Barton County Commission meeting agenda (11/26)

November and December see the convergence of many things. Last winter, Barton Community College wrestling coach Nathan Broeckelman linked that sport with Christmas by volunteering his team to help with Christmas decorations in the community. His wrestlers are again offering that service this year.

"It will be donation-based," he said. "Last year it was pretty successful helping the community out. Some gave donations, some cooked us a meal over break. We're going to hopefully start that on Monday."

The wrestlers have no classes next week due to Thanksgiving so Monday through Wednesday are an ideal time for volunteering. They will offer their services through Dec. 13, hanging lights or putting up inflatables. 

"We love being involved in the community," said Broeckelman. "We love giving back to the community. We try to give back in multiple ways. I think it's important that our wrestlers are seeing the community, not just for the college, but to show them life's not all about trying to do things to make money. Sometimes you just have to give a helping hand and help people out."

There are 24 wrestlers and three managers on this year's squad. The wrestlers can hang lights on anything they can reach with small ladders. Contact Broeckelman at (785) 871-7981 for more details.

On Nov. 20, at approximately 4:29 p.m., officers with the Great Bend Police Department were dispatched to the 1400 block of Baker Ave. in reference to an aggravated burglary. Officers were advised that a female victim arrived home to find a male subject, later identified as 43-year-old Dustin Hawkins inside her residence.

The female victim stated she did not know Hawkins and that he did not have permission to be inside her residence. The victim stated she called 911 and Hawkins left the residence. Hawkins was located a short distance from the residence and was found to be in possession of items from the residence. He was taken into custody and booked at the Barton County Jail in lieu of bond.

Great Bend Police make arrest in aggravated burglary case

On Nov. 11, the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the completion of the Barton County Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Veterans Park. This tribute was made possible by the generosity of local individuals, businesses, and organizations who supported the project, initiated toward the end of 2023.

The memorial, envisioned by Larry Parsons, was designed to provide a place of reflection and healing for Vietnam veterans and their families. Parsons collaborated with a committee of six Vietnam veterans—Don Green, Ghazi Jayhay, Ken Lebbin, Mike Harbaugh, and Gary Burke—who shared insights from their personal experiences in Vietnam to shape the vision.

"Our community was so willing to support this idea, and I want to thank everyone for their part in making it a reality," Parsons said. "We wanted a space where veterans could let go of the anger and frustration they’ve carried for over 50 years."

The project culminated in a design crafted by Bruce Bitter and his brother Brent of B&amp;B Metal Arts in Hoisington, who devoted hundreds of hours to bring the memorial to life. The City of Great Bend provided a location at Veterans Park, and numerous businesses contributed financial support or discounted materials, showcasing the community’s commitment to honoring its veterans.

The dedication ceremony featured U.S. Senator Dr. Roger Marshall, who spoke about the enduring significance of honoring Vietnam veterans. 

"Vietnam veterans didn’t come home to parades or warm welcomes," Parsons said. "This memorial serves as a permanent place of healing, reflection, and respect for their sacrifices."

With Thanksgiving&nbsp;weekend being one of the busiest travel times of the year, the Kansas Department of Transportation, Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas Turnpike Authority remind travelers to buckle up to help make it to the table for holiday celebrations. &nbsp;

During the last five Thanksgiving holiday weekends, 22 people have lost their lives in Kansas traffic crashes, according to KDOT statistics.

“Seat belts reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by nearly 50 percent,” said KDOT Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed. “Make sure all your passengers are buckled up before you leave the driveway.”&nbsp;

Law enforcement officers across the state will have an increased presence over the holiday period and will focus on overall traffic safety.

“The Kansas Highway Patrol, along with law enforcement agencies across the state, will be on roadways enforcing Kansas’ traffic and occupant protection laws,” said KHP Superintendent Colonel Erik Smith.&nbsp;“Remember, one of the safest choices drivers and passengers can make is to buckle up.&nbsp;Seat belts are the best defense against impaired, aggressive and distracted drivers.&nbsp; We want everyone to arrive at their destinations safely.&nbsp; Buckle Up.&nbsp; Every Trip. Every Time.”

The KTA is also preparing for increased traffic during the Thanksgiving holiday.

“With the change to cashless tolling on the Kansas Turnpike, all traffic will keep moving rather than stopping at a toll booth this holiday season, which helps improve safety,” said KTA CEO Steve Hewitt. “Drivers will pay tolls using a compatible transponder, like KTAG, or via a mailed bill. KDOT reminds motorists to put safety first for Thanksgiving travel

The more things have changed for Fuller Industries Inc.’s new Vice President of Operations Phyllis Jones, the more they’ve stayed the same.

Jones assumed her new role about a month ago, moving from the Dallas, Texas, area. There she was a senior director of operations for the ZEP Company, another leading cleaning product maker, overseeing sites in Texas, Arizona and Canada.

“I am getting settled in and am hitting the ground running,” said the St. Louis, Mo., native. With a laugh, she said she hasn’t seen much of the community yet as she is still getting her bearings at Fuller.

There was some culture shock moving from a metropolis like Dallas to a smaller city like Great Bend and she didn’t know what to expect. “But the people have been surprisingly friendly. They’ve been very welcoming.”

She was familiar with the name Fuller, but not everything the legacy manufacturer did. She was impressed.

“There is a slight overlap in products between Fuller and ZEP,” she said. She appreciates the niche Fuller is filling with its mission of moving to more environmentally friendly commercial cleaners and janitorial products.

“Phyllis brings a wealth of experience to the Fuller team,” said Joe Mann, Fuller vice president and general manager. “Her hiring was part of our continuing effort to bring in the best and brightest here as we position ourselves for the future.”

Jones, who is a chemical engineer, got her undergraduate degree from Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Ala. She earned her two master’s degrees at Webster University in St. Louis.

She will manage Fuller’s day-to-day operations and ensure they are efficient and cost-effective, Mann said. This will include planning, coordinating and directing activities.

“I am looking forward to the challenge,” Jones said. “It is exciting to be where the focus is on expansion and utilizing the latest in technology.”

Right out of the gate, she is working with Fuller’s integration of the operations from a sister factory in Canada at the Great Bend facility. This involves the installation of new equipment and the hiring of new personnel.

Jones is a sports enthusiast, having been a multi-sport athlete playing softball, basketball and volleyball. She also enjoys watching basketball from the high school level to the pros.

In addition, she loves going to the movies, especially romantic comedies, and binge-watching television.
