Back in April, Central Kansas Community Corrections Director Brooke Haulmark was just a few months into her new position when she had to outline CKCC's goals for the upcoming 2025 fiscal year. Goal number one for the first quarter that began in July was completing assessments for at least 90 percent of new clients within 30 days of their assignment to CKCC by the court. As she approaches her first anniversary on the job after the New Year, Haulmark is happy to report a 97 percent success rate.

"These are standardized assessments that are done for prison population, parole, and community corrections," she said. "It helps to set that foundation of where the individual has some needs that need to be addressed, and where can we focus programming to ensure they are successful and don't ever come back on supervision once they're done."

Haulmark said the organization that serves five counties in the 20th Judicial District was more than 200 assessments behind when she took over the position. She said timeliness of the assessments is important for several reasons, including building on any momentum a client has to make changes following sentencing.

"If you wait longer than 30 or 45 days, that momentum to handle business fades away," she said. "We have to stay on top of doing those assessments. Case management is do the assessment, get them with their programming,  do check-ins with them. If you don't have the assessment, you don't even know what their risk areas are. It is the foundational piece of case management."

Haulmark credits peer-to-peer accountability and tips from Patrick Lencioni's "The Five Dysfunctions as a Team" in meeting the goal. The other two goals set in April include developing a case plan for 90 percent of high-risk offenders within 45 days and having 90 percent of those high-risk offenders entered into a statewide database within 60 days.

Ah, Christmas! Time once again to connect present to past and share family traditions and stories. Lifetime collections of ornaments and décor combined with treasured recipes trigger memories that fill humans with longing for lost loved ones and friends and the richness they added. Every ornament I have links me to people and activities from long ago.

Setting out tiny, hand-carved egg cups that hold one red Santa and one black Santa bring Lawrence Weigel to mind. During my first years of teaching decades ago, a local resident encouraged me to invite Mr. Weigel to share stories of Volga German customs with my classes. The man possessed a wealth of information about traditions unique to this area. His stories about Christkind and Belznicklos enthralled those high school English students.

While many youngsters in Ellis County descended from Volga German settlers, few families maintained customs brought from the old country. Lawrence captured our attention as he explained how each area village in Ellis and Rush Counties represented a specific town with dialects and cultures originating hundreds of years ago in Germany before that first migration to Russia’s Volga River Region.

He explained that before WW II when automobile access made travel easier from one town to another encouraging cultures to blend, traditions and customs changed little. Following a later migration to Kansas, these families still practiced customs like their forebearers brought from Germany to Russia three hundred years earlier.

I taught young adults, and Lawrence Weigel’s stories about Christkind and Belznicklos moved teens to their seats edge. Out of nearly 130 students he spoke to each year, less than a handful had heard of characters integral to their great-grandparents’ and grandparents’ lives. Though I have a Volga German grandmother, I’d never heard these stories either.

According to our speaker, Christkind appeared in association with St. Nicholas’s Day on December 6th. A blonde youth dressed in blue and white passed outside windows where a child looking out might catch this apparition revealing a doll or carved wooden toy. Of course, this inspired prayers as well as the hope that good kids might receive the displayed object for Christmas.

Christkind’s opposite was Belznicklos whom I’ve also heard called the Black Santa. Mr. Weigel shared that during his childhood, this character scared the tar out of naughty kids. Someone clanking chains and dressed in dark clothing--perhaps a buffalo hide coat, wearing a mask, carrying a whip and a sack large enough to hold a youngster--noisily appeared to recount miscreant’s bad behaviors. Unbeknownst to targeted kiddoes, parents previously reported offenses to this creature. Lawrence shared accounts of him grabbing particularly badly behaved children, stuffing them in his bag, and carrying them onto the prairie. Watching student faces as they considered this fate let me see wheels turning in the heads of listeners who realized they’d find themselves inside Belnicklos’ sack. Lawrence explained at the end of his tale that this form of behavior modification caused more than one child to change his or her ways.

All good things end, and Lawrence Weigel took his engaging renditions of local customs with him when he passed. Thinking now of loved ones sitting around holiday tables makes me hope that someone in every family passes on their stories to fascinated listeners. Perhaps another class of students one day will listen to those tales while sitting on the edges of chairs, letting imaginations run wild.

MADORIN: Remembering Lawrence Weigel this Christmas

In the spirit of the season, the Gifting Forward Foundation has brought festive cheer by gifting $1,000 each day to 12 local organizations, delivering $12,000 in support to those making a difference in the community.

The Gifting Forward Foundation, established in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, was created with the mission to empower individuals to support the causes that are most meaningful to them. Since its inception, the Foundation has grown to over half a million dollars in assets and over ten million dollars pledged—now entering a new chapter in its mission to “gift it forward.”

Over the last 12 business days, the Foundation revealed a new nonprofit recipient each day. 

The selected organizations include: USD 428 Education Foundation, CKCA School, Holy Family School, Barton County Community College Foundation, CASA, Kans for Kids, Core Communities, 1st Christian Church Refuge Building Fund, Dream Center, Family Crisis Center, Sunflower Diversified, and GB Alive.

“We are beyond thrilled to support these organizations that are integral to making a positive difference in our community,” said Dena Hiss, Co-Founder of the Gifting Forward Foundation. “This campaign is just one small way we can say ‘thank you’ for their hard work and dedication. It is so heartwarming to witness the collective impact these organizations are making, and it fills us with joy to be able to gift forward during the holiday season.”

The daily winners were revealed on local radio and through the Gifting Forward Foundation's Facebook page. From education and youth programs to crisis centers and community services, the campaign has spotlighted a diverse group of nonprofits.

Gifting Forward spreads holiday cheer with $12,000 donation campaign

Farms face daily decisions about their operations including new equipment and crops, pricing and risk management strategies. Kansas State University’s Agricultural Economics Department offers its Finances and the Farm online course to help producers develop strong financial skills to make informed decisions that impact the farm's bottom line.

“The need to manage farm financials may be greater than ever before because of historically high input costs and lower commodity prices, creating uncertain profitability margins,” K-State extension farm economist Robin Reid said. “The Finances and the Farm online class provides education for managing financial risk of the farm business; focusing on good recordkeeping as the foundation, using those records to develop financial statements, conducting benchmarking and performance analysis on those statements, and then using that information to make management decisions.”

The course covers seven lessons: Recordkeeping, Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Enterprise Budgeting, Cash Flow, Managing Family Living Expenses, and Goal Setting. During the course, participants will:

· Understand the structure of a balance sheet, income statement, enterprise budgets, and cash flow

· Use a case farm to complete quizzes to check understanding and practice using these financial statements in a real-world setting

· Two case farms available: Row Crops and Beef Cattle, and Vegetable, Egg and Honeybee Farm

· Be prepared to use financial management techniques for their own operation

· Learn how to make changes to avoid financial difficulties

Taught by Reid and K-State farm analyst LaVell Winsor, the course was first launched in 2021. It has been recently updated to provide a more interactive learning experience for participants.

Participants watch short videos, go through an interactive review of the content, do an interactive activity, and then work through a quiz where they are inputting numbers into a financial statement and doing performance analysis, so they are able to apply what they are learning in the videos. Participants are also then given resources such as paper sheets and Excel documents to develop financial statements for their own operations. The course is self-paced, which means participants can take up to six months to complete the material, though it is recommended that participants make a schedule to complete it in 2-4 weeks.

“This course is designed with the learner in mind, with the convenience of completing this course at their own pace, from their home or office,” Winsor said.

The cost is $100 (education only), or $300 if the participant wishes to receive Farm Service Agency borrower’s training financial credit. It is approved for participants to receive FSA Borrower’s Training Financial Credits for Kansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Coursework will be graded, and a certificate will be provided upon successful completion of the final exam. Previous participants have appreciated the breadth of information learned from the program.

“The class was able to offer a fairly wide variety of options for most operations on how to manage finances. CAMPBELL: Online financial and farm management course for farmers

Did you know December is the peak time for home fires involving candles and holiday decorations? The American Red Cross offers simple steps to help make sure your holiday decorations aren’t the cause of a home fire during the holidays.

HOLIDAY LIGHTING&nbsp;Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant.

TREE SAFETY&nbsp;If you are leaning toward a real tree, pick one with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk.

CANDLES AND HOME FIRES&nbsp;While candles are pretty and some smell good, they also cause home fires. Remember, a candle is an open flame ─ it can easily ignite anything that can burn. Think about using flameless candles ─ they look and smell like real candles.

Place smoke alarms on each level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas. In addition to testing your alarms once a month, change the batteries at least once a year, if your model requires it. Also check the manufacturer’s date of your smoke alarms. If they’re 10 years or older, they need to be replaced because the sensor becomes less sensitive over time. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Avoid home fires for the holidays

The disbursement of property tax statements to Barton County landowners
was delayed this year due to information not submitted on time to the Clerk’s
Office. Barton County Commission Chair Barb Esfeld, the county’s former
appraiser, said there might have been shock once citizens started receiving their
statements, not fully understanding their valuation.


"You get your valuation and you look it over," said Esfeld. "If you're not an appraiser, you don't know if that's what your property is worth. Then you get your tax statement and it's 'ouch.' You wonder what to do."

Esfeld said there is still time to appeal your valuation if you have questions or
doubts on what the county submitted. Landowners can pay their first half of
taxes under protest. 

Esfeld added that houses are still selling for high prices.

was delayed this year due to information not submitted on time to the Clerk’s
Office. Barton County Commission Chair Barb Esfeld, the county’s former
appraiser, said there might have been shock once citizens started receiving their
statements, not fully understanding their valuation.
"You get your valuation and you look it over," said Esfeld. "If you're not an appraiser, you don't know if that's what your property is worth. Then you get your tax statement and it's 'ouch.' You wonder what to do."Esfeld said there is still time to appeal your valuation if you have questions or
doubts on what the county submitted. Landowners can pay their first half of
taxes under protest. Esfeld added that houses are still selling for high prices.

Barton Co. property owners still have time to appeal valuations

The Great Bend High School debate team was crowned Champions at the Regional Tournament hosted in Great Bend on Saturday, Dec. 21. Their hard-fought victory highlights a season of growth, resilience, and outstanding performances. This year marks the fourth consecutive trip to the state tournament for Great Bend.

The Panthers were 5A Regional Runner-Ups in 2023 and 2022. This is the first time that GBHS has claimed a 5A Regional Championship since 2021.

Great Bend 's Regional Champion team consisted of Seniors Darcy Feist, Reese King, Steven Guillory and Junior, Zachary Hart. Juniors Ellie Damm and Rhys Froetschner were alternates.

"Coaching this remarkable group of debaters has been an unforgettable experience," Heath shared. "Watching their belief in themselves and their abilities grow throughout their high school career has been truly inspiring.”

The victory was a true team effort. It was made possible not just by those competing, but also by the students who contributed through research, practice support, and tournament preparation. According to GBHS debate coach, Kim Heath, “This Regional Championship highlights what it means to be part of a team. Debate eliminates fears of public speaking, and sharpens oral and written skills. But more than that it empowers them to lead and take control of the direction of their own learning.” She continued, “My students have discovered and developed skills that will benefit them for a lifetime."

The Great Bend High School Debate program will compete in the 2025 Kansas State High School Activities Association Class 5A 4-Speaker Debate Tournament in Garden City on Friday, Jan. 17 and Saturday, Jan. 18.

Great Bend will compete against defending state champions Blue Valley Southwest, as well as Hutchinson, Hays, Sumner Academy, St. James Academy, DeSoto, Valley Center and Bishop Carroll.

In addition to excelling in the 4-speaker tournament, the Panthers have qualified three additional teams for the state 2-speaker tournament, which will also be held in Garden City in January. Senior Analeah Ochs will partner with Junior Jordan Ochs, while sophomores Hunter McClanahan, Kyra Lewis, Parker Coleman, and Kendra Scheideman will form the other two teams.

Great Bend officials: Tips to avoid sewer issues this holiday season

In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, the entire family may need a chance to relax, laugh, and connect.

The holidays are the perfect opportunity for families to gather around the table and enjoy games. Through these experiences, families create tradition, enrich social connection, and support a resilient and joyful family culture.

“Incorporating board games into holiday celebrations not only enhances the festivities, but also builds a foundation of family values, mental well-being, and lasting connections,” says Elizabeth Brunscheen-Cartegena, a Family Life and Resource Management Agent for K-State Research and Extension.

Here are a few ways families benefit, according to Brunscheen-Cartagena.

Board games strengthen social connections In particular, board games offer a break from phone and television screens. “Games encourage positive social interaction by creating a shared experience that brings people together,” Brunscheen-Cartagena says.

Cooperative games foster teamwork and empathy, teaching family members to value collaboration over competition.

“For family members who don’t see each other often, games offer a bridge to meaningful connection, enhancing social cohesion and creating memories to cherish.”

Board games promote mental health and relieve stress Playing games creates an environment in which everyone can unwind and have fun.

“The joy, laughter, and sense of accomplishment that comes with play fosters mental well-being and emotional resilience,” Brunscheen-Cartagena says. “When family members engage in friendly competition or work as a team, they release stress and create memories that help everyone feel refreshed, connected, and happier.”

Board games pass on traditions and values When families introduce game traditions during the holidays, older family members can pass on stories about how these games have been enjoyed over the years.

“For example, when grandparents teach a game to grandchildren, they pass on both the joy of playing and a sense of family legacy, allowing cultural values and family traditions to endure, and strengthen bonds across generations,” she says.

Board games foster intellectual growth and critical thinking for all ages Games challenge players to think critically, make calculated decisions, and anticipate each other’s moves – skills that apply beyond the table.

“Engaging in these cognitive tasks helps family members exercise their minds while having fun together,” Brunscheen-Cartagena said. “This mental stimulation keeps minds elevated, builds intellectual resilience, and models the importance of critical thinking and adaptability for younger players.”

TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.5% in November. This is an increase from 3.4% in October and an increase from 2.6% in November 2023.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 7,900 from October. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 7,100 over the month, while government increased by 800.

The unemployment rate in Barton County is down from 3.5 percent in October to 3.3 percent in November. The rate is also down slightly in Russell County but up Pawnee County.

“Total nonfarm job estimates for Kansas rebounded in November following a temporary drop last month. The fluctuations were partially due to the impacts of strike activity in October,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen.

“Over the last three months, Kansas has averaged 2,100 jobs added per month.”

Since November 2023 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 19,100. This change is due to an increase of 14,100 private sector jobs and an increase of 5,000 government jobs.

Trash pickup changes in Russell for the holiday

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced that ten proposed National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor projects have been scaled down to three, none of which will run through Kansas. In the meantime, the Grain Belt Express transmission line, approved by the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) in 2011, will continue through the state regulatory process.

While the route of the Grain Belt Express project fell within the borders of one of the proposed DOE corridors, its status as a previously approved project has not changed and is moving forward. In addition, without a Federal Corridor designation, State jurisdiction and approval processes remain intact for the Grain Belt Express and the KCC will continue to review any potential future projects. Federal “backstop” siting authority or the use of federal eminent domain are not an option.&nbsp; The DOE’s decision does not reverse the previously announced $4.9 billion conditional loan guarantee awarded to the Grain Belt Express project on November 25, 2024.<a href="https://outlook.office365.com/mail/inbox/id/AAQkAGE1NjQ2ODdlLTIwNDUtNDA5ZC1iNGM3LTczN2NjOWNkN2UzZQAQAMe1KiK%2FWm5NlS%2FJG4cBx7k%3D#x__ftn1">[1]</a>&nbsp;

Phase 1, which includes Kansas and Missouri, can begin once all regulatory and financing requirements have been obtained for that portion of the project. The order issued did not remove or alter any of the protections for landowners that were required by the Commission when it approved the acquisition of the project by Invenergy in 2019.</li><li>2024 – The KCC gave conditional approval to a siting plan for two 345 kV transmission lines, known as the AC Collector System, designed to connect wind and solar farms to the Grain Belt Express.</li>

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (12/20 - 12/22)

As the year winds down, the Barton Community College Foundation is
looking at a banner year. At the end of the 2024 fiscal year, the Foundation
reported more than $13.9 million in assets, a 20% increase from the previous
year. The Foundation was able to award over $1.18 million in enhancement grants
to the college for projects and programs.


Barton Foundation Director Lindsey Bogner said along with donations and the
clay shoot fundraiser, the Foundation collects funds during the employee giving
month. Each November, Bogner and her staff speak to the college’s employees to
accept donations.


"Our employees are amazing," said Bogner. "They support this program. They get to choose where they want those dollars to go. Over the month of November, our employees raised $13,955. There were 76 employees that donated and they supported 16 different funds."

The Foundation also awarded scholarships to 155 students, totaling more than
$232,000. 

Mike Johnson serves on the Barton Board of Trustees and also sits in
on the Foundation’s Board to see the good work being done in the department.


"Lindsey has a great board," said Johnson. "They do a great job. The Foundation has always been run very well. Lyndsey has brought a new perspective to that group. I think she continues to do a great job for the Foundation on behalf of the college."

The Foundation awarded 20 mini-grants to faculty totaling nearly $25,000
this past fiscal year. The grants this year provided faculty with a variety
of needs including novels for a new literature class, graphing calculators,
digital cameras, CPR equipment and more.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Numbers up for Barton Community College Foundation assets

A little experiment at the Barton County Health Department is paying off for residents of the county. Beginning Sept. 30, the office began staying open until 6 p.m. four nights a week to better serve clients. Director Karen Winkelman said those hours will continue into the New Year with even more hours.

"We are going to continue with that," she said. "After we looked at numbers, we are serving more individuals being open later every day. Also, starting Jan. 1, we will be open through the lunch hour."

Starting Jan. 2, hours will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday. Winkelman said her department is largely able to avoid overtime costs, but that extra hour in the evening has been beneficial to families.

"That one hour we've seen immunizations," she said. "My office window is strategically placed where I can see people coming to the door. It was breaking my heart to see people running, dragging their kids out of the car at 4:45 to get to get in there and get their shots."

The Barton County Health Department will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25 in observance of the Christmas holiday. The office will be open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve, closed for New Year's Day, then re-open on Jan. 2, including over the lunch hour.

At least another year. The City of Great Bend will get at least another
year from Dr. Mike Malone as the primary veterinarian for the animals at the
Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo. The city council approved a one-year contract with
Malone, knowing he is contemplating retirement in the near future.

Ashley Burdick said with help from Dr. Jackie Corbett, Malone has handled the
zoo’s vet needs for 44 years.


"Dr. Mike has been there over 40 years," said Burdick. "We have a good working relationship with the veterinarians. They have a very good skillset. They know the individuals. That's not something that can be easily replaced by another clinic."

The contract includes a monthly rate of $1,800 and an hourly rate of $180. Total
services are not to exceed $116,000.

"Other clinics have expressed they would charge us significantly more too," added Burdick.

The zoo also received approval to purchase a wireless digital x-ray system from
IWV Digital for $25,845. This equipment will provide the zoo a way to read
x-rays quicker when time is a factor for animals that are sedated or
potentially suffering.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
