The utilities department with Great Bend Public Works has been saving money in the capital outlay fund to purchase a new sewer line camera system to check on the conditions of pipes. The department has earmarked $80,000 to purchase a new camera system.

Assistant Public Works Director Jason Cauley says the current system cannot record video which prevents the department from documenting areas of concern.

"There was a software malfunction that is pretty much unrecoverable," said Cauley. "The camera system has become unreliable. You can get a live feed but you cannot record which is needed for our evaluations."

Great Bend received two bids from Key Equipment & Supply Co. and Mayer Equipment & Supply, LLC. Mayer had the low bid of $77,825 that includes attachments to perform the job.

Cauley noted the camera system is similar to driving a remote control car down the sewer line while capturing video and taking pictures of the pipe condition.

The Great Bend City Council approved the purchase from the Goddard-based Mayer company.
