A big addition to Heizer Park is wrapping up and more improvements are right around the corner for the Great Bend park. Musco installed the mini-pitch double soccer system earlier this month. Merritt Tennis & Track Systems placed an acrylic surface on the court last week.
Great Bend City Administrator Logan Burns said the mini-pitch is already gaining popularity.
"Out over the weekend, there were a lot of kids out there," said Burns. "Dirt work will start for the bathroom install on June 4. Irrigation will start on June 9. This project is starting to come together for that."
Great Bend was awarded grant funds from the Land & Water Conservation Fund through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) in the amount of $161,260 with matching funds from the city for a total of $361,260.
The Heizer Park improvements also include a restroom facility, upgrades to the sand volleyball and basketball court and a soccer field with new netting.
