UNDATED (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have been fast starters to the NFL season. The defending-champion Chiefs head into their opener Thursday night at home against Detroit having won eight straight regular-season openers, which is tied for the fifth longest streak of the Super Bowl era. Kansas City last lost in Week 1 back in 2014 with Alex Smith at quarterback when they fell 26-10 to Tennessee in a game played before Mahomes had even made his college debut. Mahomes has thrown at least three touchdown passes in all five of his season openers. Only three QBs have more openers with at least three TD passes in their entire careers.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tight end Travis Kelce hyperextended his knee during the Chiefs’ final practice before their opener against Detroit on Tuesday, leaving his status in question for Thursday night's game. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said the injury occurred during their final full workout Tuesday but provided no other details. The 33-year-old Kelce has not missed a game to injury since his rookie year in 2013, which he had a microfracture procedure to fix a cartilage problem in his knee. He has twice been held out of meaningless games to end the regular season.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 21 Duke and No. 22 Colorado have jumped into the Associated Press Top 25 college football poll after scoring the biggest upsets of the opening weekend of the season. No. 4 Florida State also climbed into the top-five with a resounding victory over LSU, which dropped from fifth to No. 14. Georgia remained No. 1 and Michigan held steady at No. 2. No. 3 Alabama moved up a spot and Florida State climbed four places and received three first-place votes. Ohio State dropped two places to round out the top five.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — There are some heavyweight showdowns for Big 12 schools in Week 2 of the college football season. Texas-Alabama tops the list, but Iowa plays Iowa State, Utah faces Baylor, Cincinnati takes on Pittsburgh, Kansas plays Illinois, Texas Tech plays Oregon and Oklahoma faces Arizona State. If the Big 12 wants to a big player after college football realignment, now is the time to prove it, especially after the league was embarrassed a week ago. Among the lumps the league took, TCU lost at home to Colorado, Texas Tech fell to Wyoming and Baylor was beaten by Texas State.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas receiver Adonai Mitchell could have stayed at Georgia where he was already a hero. He had two of the biggest catches in program history in help the Bulldogs to the last two national championships. But the coos and cuddles of a toddler daughter drew him home to Texas. Mitchell transferred to Texas shortly after Georgia's championship game win over TCU last season and is now a key part of the Longhorns offense. He caught a touchdown last week against Rice. Next is Alabama, which hasn't forgotten him. Mitchell caught the go-ahead touchdown in the championship game two seasons ago.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gregory Santos balked with the bases-loaded as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Chicago White Sox 7-6Tuesday night. The Royals overcame a 6-0 deficit to claim their first series win since July 28-Aug. 3. The Royals entered the ninth trailing 6-5. Nick Loftin reached on an error and went to second on a single by Michael Massey. Maikel Garcia hit into a fielder’s choice before Bobby Witt Jr. singled in the tying run. With two outs, Santos intentionally walked MJ Melendez to load the bases, bringing up Edward Olivares. Jackson Kowar (1-0) earned the win. Santos (2-2) took the loss.

ATLANTA (AP) — Tyler O’Neill and Nolan Gorman hit early two-run homers to spoil Michael Soroka’s promotion to Atlanta and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Braves 10-6. Braves manager Brian Snitker says Soroka suffered numbers in his fingers in the start and is headed toward the injured list. O’Neill’s homer to left field drove in Jordan Walker in the second inning. Gorman added homers in the third and ninth innings. The MLB-leading Braves, coming off an 8-2 road trip that included three wins in four games against the Dodgers, were outhit by the Cardinals, who are last in the NL Central.

PHOENIX (AP) — Colorado’s Kyle Freeland threw six solid innings and then handed off to the bullpen. Lately, that’s been when the trouble has started for the Rockies. But not Tuesday night. Matt Koch handled the seventh, Jake Bird took the eighth and Tyler Kinley locked down the ninth. Nine batters up, nine batters down, and a drama-free 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The last-place Rockies beat the playoff-contending D-backs for just the third time in 12 tries this season. Arizona — locked in a tight battle for one of three National League wild-card spots — fell behind the Miami Marlins and Cincinnati Reds for the final spot after both those teams won Tuesday. The D-backs have lost six of its past eight games.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Major League Baseball has opened an investigation into Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías after he was arrested Sunday on a felony charge of corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant. A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman confirmed the charge Tuesday. Urías did not travel with the Dodgers to Miami, where they open a three-game series against the Marlins on Tuesday night. He was scheduled to make his next start Thursday. Urías was arrested late Sunday night by Department of Public Safety officers in Exposition Park, south of downtown Los Angeles. The park is home to BMO Stadium, where Lionel Messi was playing in a Major League Soccer game with numerous celebrities in attendance.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The United States is headed to the medal round of the Basketball World Cup after bouncing back from its first loss of the tournament in emphatic fashion. Mikal Bridges scored 14 of his 24 points in the first half and the U.S. was airtight for long stretches defensively on the way to beating Italy 100-63 on Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the World Cup. The win ensures the 15th top-four finish for the Americans in 19 World Cups. They’ll play either Germany or Latvia in Friday’s semifinals.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Germany will play the United States in the semifinals of the Basketball World Cup in a rematch of an exhibition matchup from earlier this summer where the Americans needed a big rally to win. Franz Wagner scored 16 points and Germany held off Latvia 81-79 in a quarterfinal game, pulling away in the fourth quarter of what had been a back-and-forth matchup for the first 30 minutes. Germany is the last unbeaten team left in the World Cup. Next up: The U.S. on Friday for a spot in Sunday’s gold medal game.
