From the Barton Foundation
When the Barton Community College Foundation gathers for its 47th Annual Big Benefit Auction on Aug. 22, attendees will have the opportunity to do more than bid on auction packages. They will help honor two community members whose quiet generosity has touched Barton students and the Great Bend community for decades.
This year's Old Bill Honorarium recognizes Jim and Kathy Vopat for their commitment to giving back and supporting educational opportunities through Barton Community College. As part of the tradition, auction attendees can contribute to a scholarship that will be awarded in the Vopats' honor during the 2027-28 academic year.
Since making Great Bend their home in 1991, the couple has embraced opportunities to invest in the community that has supported their family. Through decades of involvement and support for Barton Community College, they have helped create opportunities for students while strengthening the place they call home.
"We feel truly blessed to be a part of such a caring community," Jim said. "Because of all the community has done for us over the years, we believe it is important to give back in a meaningful way."
That perspective has shaped their support of Barton, an institution they believe strengthens the region by creating educational opportunities for people of all ages. They hope Foundation scholarships continue helping students pursue their goals, build new skills, and create brighter futures.
Barton Executive Director of Institutional Advancement Lindsey Bogner said the Vopats exemplify the spirit of the Old Bill Honorarium through their generosity, humility, and dedication to the community.
"Jim and Kathy represent what makes this community so special," she said. "They give because they genuinely care about helping others succeed. The Old Bill Honorarium is one of our favorite traditions because it gives us the chance to say ‘thank you.’ On Aug. 22, we have the opportunity to celebrate them while helping create opportunities for future students."
Barton has played an important role in the Vopat family's story. Both of Jim and Kathy's daughters, along with several nieces and nephews, attended the College, giving the couple a firsthand appreciation for the opportunities Barton creates for students and families throughout the region. Those experiences make this year's honor especially meaningful.
"Having a scholarship in our family's name is a tremendous honor," Kathy said. "It is truly rewarding to know students will benefit from our family's connection to the community. We are beyond grateful for this opportunity."

The Big Benefit Auction is the Barton Foundation's longest-running and most successful fundraiser. Proceeds support academic scholarships and enhancements to programs and facilities that enrich the educational experience for Barton students.
About the Old Bill Honorarium
In 1981, the Claflin Fire Department donated a stuffed buffalo head to the Foundation auction. The item, affectionately named "Old Bill," quickly became a tradition, selling each year before being donated back to be auctioned again. In 2002, Old Bill the buffalo was retired, and the Foundation established the Old Bill Honorarium to recognize loyal supporters and donors while continuing to raise scholarship funds for Barton students.
