Walhmeier, Bartel earn WAC tennis honors in Garden City

Prep tennis players are headed to regional competition this weekend. Before that, the Lady Panther tennis team headed to Garden City Monday for the Western Athletic Conference championships. The team finished second overall, and Kaylin Wahlmeier was named WAC Player of the Year, and Great Bend Coach Zach Bartel was named WAC Coach of the Year.

Garden City scored 14 points for the WAC title. Great Bend finished behind the Buffs with 11 points, and Dodge City scored seven points for third.

Wahlmeier posted a 4-0 record in the No. 1 singles bracket. She opened with 8-3 wins against Dodge City and Liberal, defeated Hays 8-1, then capped the perfect day with an 8-4 win against Garden City.

Paige Stacey nearly followed suit as the No. 2 singles player, finishing at 3-1 for second. She was unbeaten in her first three matches with an 8-5 win over Dodge City, an 8-2 showing against Liberal, and an 8-6 win against Hays. Stacey lost her Garden City match 8-3.

Mac Lindberg and Darcy Feist also went 3-1 for second place at No. 2 doubles. They opened with an 8-2 loss to Dodge City, then defeated Liberal 8-1, downed Hays 8-3, and beat Garden City 8-4.

Taylor Lashley and Sam Mayers finished fourth with a 1-3 record at No. 1 doubles. The day opened well enough with an 8-2 win against Dodge City, and the girls lost competitive matches against Liberal (8-6) and Garden City (8-5), and they fell to Hays 8-3.

Great Bend will compete at the Class 5A regional meet in Salina on Saturday.
