USD 428's Free Summer Meals Program is off to a strong start, serving thousands of meals to local children during the first two weeks of summer break.

During Week 1, the district distributed 4,417 meals. While that total was 460 meals lower than the same week last year, participation rebounded significantly in Week 2, with 8,184 meals served—an increase of 585 meals compared to the previous year.

The program provides free grab-and-go lunches and breakfast packs to all children ages 1-18, helping ensure students have access to nutritious meals throughout the summer months.

USD 428 Superintendent Khris Thexton said the district hopes to see even more families take advantage of the opportunity in the weeks ahead.

"The more, the better," Thexton said. "We want every child and family who can benefit from this program to participate. These meals help support healthy, active kids throughout the summer while also providing meaningful savings for families."

Meals are currently available Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Eisenhower, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Riley Elementary Schools through June 26.

Beginning June 29 and continuing through July 24, meal service will be available at Eisenhower, Jefferson, and Riley Elementary Schools. There will be no meal service on Friday, July 3.

The Summer Meals Program is open to all children ages 1-18 at no cost and with no income requirements.

District officials encourage families who have not yet participated to stop by a meal site and take advantage of the program.
