The deadline to file as a political candidate for one of the many upcoming races in the August Primary Election is usually June 1. As that date falls on a Saturday this year, Barton County Clerk Bev Schmeidler reminds potential candidates that the deadline to file this year is Monday, June 3.
"The filing deadline is quickly approaching for all of our local offices," she said. "The deadline is June 3 at noon, and you file here in the county clerk's office. All operations are back in the courthouse now so we are on the second floor in room 202."
There are several local races in the August primary, including four ward positions on the Great Bend City Council, two districts on the Barton County Commission, as well as county sheriff, clerk, treasurer, county attorney, and register of deeds offices. Treasurer and trustee positions in all Barton County townships, and precinct committee people for every precinct in the county will also be on the ballot. Deadlines to register to vote or change party affiliation are also quickly approaching.
"If you want to change from one party to the other, the last day to do that is also June 3 at noon," Schmeider said. "If you are unaffiliated, you can always affiliate clear through election day. The last day to register to vote for the August election is July 16."
The Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Winning candidates will advance to the General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
