Only you can prevent wildfires. That's the latest version of one of America's most famous public service announcements, but those who grew up between 1947 and 2001 may remember Smokey Bear's former catchphrase, "Remember...Only you can prevent forest fires." Created in 1944 to raise awareness about the danger of wildfires, Smokey Bear is turning 80 years old this year. Ken Marston, youth services librarian at the Great Bend Public Library, said the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge begins at the library on Sept. 3.

"It's just a chance for patrons to come, particularly kids, and read things that are geared toward preventing forest fires and management of forests," he said. "They can learn a little bit about the history of Smokey Bear and even learn about employment opportunities or the types of jobs people do to help preserve our national forests."

The challenge is geared for ages 4-10 but all ages are welcome. Participants can take the Smokey Bear Pledge, read books about the environment and wildfires, and receive prizes. The challenge runs through Nov. 28, and the Great Bend Public Library will also have videos highlighting some of America's national parks. Patrons may pick up their challenge packets beginning Sept. 3.
