ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Wide receiver Kadarius Toney underwent surgery Tuesday morning for a torn meniscus in his knee. However Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid hasn’t ruled Toney out of the team’s season opener against Detroit. Toney tweaked his knee just minutes into Sunday’s opening practice of the team’s training camp at Missouri Western State University. Toney was receiving punts during warmups when he injured the cartilage in his knee.

UNDATED (AP) — Justin Herbert is set to become the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback by annual salary, agreeing to a five-year, $262.5 million extension with the Los Angeles Chargers on Tuesday. Herbert’s total value and $52.5 million average per season surpasses the $260 million, five-year extension Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson signed three months ago. Herbert is getting $218.7 million guaranteed, according to a person close to the negotiations who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Chargers didn't release the financial details. The Chargers are set to have their first training camp practice on Wednesday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals are trying to be more transparent about their plans for a new ballpark. Majority owner John Sherman released a letter to fans in hopes of providing a timetable on stadium proposals. Sherman writes “detailed renderings and many other components that will help us compare the broad benefits” of two competing sites will be released in the next 30 days. After that, the team expects to pick between downtown Kansas City and a spot in neighboring Clay County, which sits across the Missouri River. Sherman says “we are committed to doing this right,. This is a huge decision for us.”

PHOENIX (AP) — Pinch-hitter Corbin Carroll’s two-run triple capped a three-run rally in the eighth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 to snap a five-game losing streak. Arizona rallied late Tuesday to win for just the third time in 11 games since the All-Star break. Kyle Nelson got one out in the eighth inning to earn the win. Kevin Ginkel pitched the ninth for his third save. Merrill Kelly returned from the injured list for Arizona and went six innings, giving up just one run on four hits.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Joey Meneses’ three-run homer highlighted a four-run eighth inning and the Washington Nationals rallied to beat the Colorado Rockies 6-5 on Tuesday night. Washington was trailing 5-2 when CJ Abrams led off the eighth with a single against Justin Lawrence (3-4) and stole second. Lane Thomas reached on an error by third baseman Ryan McMahon and Jeimer Candelario doubled to right center, scoring Abrams. Meneses followed with a homer to left field, his seventh of the season, on a 1-1 sweeper pitch.

BOSTON (AP) — The Atlanta Braves turned a triple play in the third inning against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night. Center fielder Michael Harris caught a shallow fly by Triston Casas and threw to first after Adam Duvall had strayed too far. The throw easily got Duvall, then first baseman Matt Olson alertly fired the ball across the diamond in plenty of time to get Masataka Yoshida at third after he tagged up and attempted to advance on Duvall’s running gaffe. Harris held up his arms and leaped as Austin Riley tagged out Yoshida, who was several steps away from the bag when Olson’s throw arrived.

UNDATED (AP) — Senators Joe Manchin and Tommy Tuberville introduced a college sports bill that would require athletes to disclose how much they money make from name, image and likeness deals, regulate collectives and agents and put restrictions in transferring players. The bipartisan action is the second to come out of the Senate in the last week. Democrats Cory Booker of New Jersey and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, along with Republican Jerry Moran from Kansas put forth a draft bill of potential legislation to standardize NIL rules for college athletes.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Purdue and reigning national player of the year Zach Edey will open the Maui Invitational in November against Gonzaga. Tennessee also will play Syracuse, Kansas faces host Chaminade and UCLA plays Marquette in the bracket. The bracket sets up a potential semifinal matchup between the Jayhawks and Bruins, who have a combined 15 national titles. Kansas added Michigan transfer Hunter Dickinson during the offseason and has won the Maui Invitational twice. Gonzaga returns for the first time since winning the 2018 title.

UNDATED (AP) — Bronny James, son of NBA superstar LeBron James, is hospitalized in stable condition a day after going into cardiac arrest while participating in a basketball practice at the University of Southern California. A family spokesman said USC medical staff treated the 18-year-old James on Monday at Galen Center after he went into cardiac arrest and he was transported to a hospital. The spokesman said James was in stable condition Tuesday after leaving the intensive care unit. James was one of the nation's top high school prospects and is an incoming freshman with the Trojans.

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — The United States and the Netherlands meet again on the Women’s World Cup stage with smaller stakes than the 2019 title game won by the Americans. But the Dutch are collecting injuries at a terrible time of the tournament. The Netherlands will most likely be without forward Lineth Beerensteyn when they play the Americans on Thursday in New Zealand’s capital city of Wellington. She was hurt early in the Netherlands’ 1-0 victory over Portugal to open the tournament. Australia has also been hit by injuries ahead of its match against Nigeria. The victor of the match between Portugal and Vietnam will notch its first ever Women's World Cup win.
