There's the job description, then there is what educators actually do for a living. Hoisington High School's Amy Haxton is an example of a teacher and coach going above and beyond. For those efforts, she was recently presented $500 as the November winner in Eagle Media's School Hero contest, presented by OPI and Golden Belt Printing.

"Amy is a busy wife, mom, sister, aunt, teacher, coach, and a friend to everyone," said Haxton's nomination form. "She been in  education for several years, taking after her father, who she lost at 5. I've personally known Amy for 30 years, and she's always done her part in making our community better. Amy has brought autism awareness to our school system.

"Currently, she has worked very hard to bring old traditions back to our high school. As a cheerleading coach, she teaches girls there's more to being a cheerleader with participation in the community. She also encourages parents to be more involved. When she's not busy with school and coaching. she brings her dog, Ace, for therapy to our children. Amy's busy life also includes supporting her husband, who also teaches and coaches, and their  five kids  - and her bonus kids, which are the Hoisington Cardinal students.  She still finds time to help her mom, who fought cancer. Here in Hoisington, we love Amy, and I just want her to know she's appreciated."
