As the filing deadline passed last week, citizens saw a five-person race
for the District 1 position on the Barton County Commission. Hoisington resident
Rick Nulton is the latest person to announce his candidacy.
When Kenny Schremmer passed away, Kirby Krier was voted to serve the remaining
two years of Schremmer’s term on the commission in December 2020. Nulton was
one of the eight nominations, along with Krier, that sought the commission
seat at that time. Nulton has been thinking about running for the commission since that
time.
"I had to ask myself, 'Do I have the right stuff?'" said Nulton. "What does it take to be a good and effective county commissioner? I believe I have the communication skills and I know have the business background. Really, Barton County is one huge business. I think that's where my strengths could come into play."
Nulton is retired and served as the general manager for Eagle Radio in Great
Bend for 29 years. He is a 1971 graduate of Hoisington High School and 1975
graduate of Fort Hays State University.
"The commissioners deal with an annual budget," said Nulton. "There's multiple departments and employees. You want everyone to succeed and have a job they enjoy. My job would be to do my best. Be an overseer and make sure we do our damnedest to stick to the budget."
Each seat up for election in 2022 on the Barton County Commission is contested.
