Before a potential burglar reaches your house, there is often an easier target that he or she will encounter first…a parked vehicle.
Vehicle thefts are nothing new, but with recent reports throughout the City of Great Bend, Great Bend Police Chief Steve Haulmark said do not make it easy for criminals by simply leaving your vehicle unlocked.
"This isn't the first time it has happened," said Haulmark. "It happens periodically. Most of them are just targets of opportunity. Locking your doors is a big one."
A series of vehicle thefts were reported in the Twin Lakes subdivision, with multiple incidents on the same evening. Never leave valuables in your vehicle, especially if they are visible from outside.
"Don't leave things in your car," said Haulmark. "Don't have things be visible that would tempt someone to get into your car. Most of the incidents that are getting reported to us are circumstances where people are leaving their car door unlocked and leaving valuables in that car."
Haulmark added to turn your house’s exterior lights on and park in well-lit areas if possible.
