MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brandon Woodruff threw five shutout innings and Omar Narváez homered and doubled as the Milwaukee Brewers opened their home schedule with a 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday afternoon. Woodruff struck out two and allowed just three hits and a walk to bounce back from an uncharacteristically poor performance in a 9-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs last week. The Brewers scored four runs off Adam Wainwright in the first three innings. Narváez hit a solo homer in the second and an RBI double in the third.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Victor Reyes and Austin Meadows had RBI singles in the seventh inning, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2. With the game tied 2-2, pinch-hitter Eric Haase hit the first of three straight two-out singles off reliever Jake Brentz, followed by Reyes and Meadows. Miguel Cabrera had three of the Tigers’ nine hits, leaving him six shy of 3,000 for his career. All of Detroit’s hits were singles. Joe Jimenez pitched a scoreless sixth, one of four Tigers relievers who combined to allow only one walk among the final 13 Kansas City batters. Gregory Soto worked the ninth for his second save.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Former Iowa guard Joe Toussaint has signed with West Virginia for the 2022-23 season. West Virginia coach Bob Huggins announced Toussaint’s signing Thursday. Toussaint has two seasons of eligibility remaining. He started 21 of 36 games last season. He led the Hawkeyes in assists and steals and averaged 4.3 points per game. The signing was the second announced in as many days. Huggins says Toussaint is a good defender who can handle and pass the ball well. On Wednesday Huggins announced the addition of junior college forward Mohamed Wague.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Receiver A.J. Green is returning to the Arizona Cardinals on a one-year deal. The seven-time Pro Bowler played in 16 games last season, catching 54 passes for 848 yards and three touchdowns. The 33-year-old is expected to be the team’s No. 2 option next to three-time All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers have found a replacement for All-Pro receiver Davante Adams by signing free agent Sammy Watkins. The fourth player taken in the 2014 has 348 receptions for 5,059 yards and 34 touchdowns, much of that coming before being plagued with injuries over the last six years. Watkins caught 27 passes for 394 yards and only one touchdown last season with the Baltimore Ravens, his fourth NFL team.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Golden State Warriors could have Steph Curry in the lineup when they open their Western Conference quarterfinal series against Denver. Curry participated in a full scrimmage and said he’s optimistic he can play in Game 1. The two-time NBA MVP also expects to start the game if he’s cleared to play. Curry hasn’t played since March 16 due to a sprained ligament in his left foot.

HILTON HEAD, S. C. (AP) — Cameron Young fired an 8-under 63 to take the first-round lead in his RBC Heritage debut. The 24-year-old PGA Tour rookie had eight birdies and no bogeys in his first round under 70 since a closing 65 at the Honda Classic more than six weeks ago. Young is two shots in front of Chile’s Joaquin Niemann and three ahead of seven others, including reigning FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay.
