Transforming libraries across USD 428, “Book Tasting” brings a café-style reading experience to 3rd–6th grade students, encouraging them to explore new genres and discover new favorites.

Led by USD 428 Elementary Librarian Kristine Boepple, the “Library Café” welcomes students into a relaxed experience complete with light music, checkered tablecloths, themed centerpieces, menus, and books – the main course!

Students rotate from table to table sampling different genres of books, using their “menus” to make notes and rate the titles they explore. The goal is to encourage students to try something new and discover genres they may not have sampled before, helping them build confidence in selecting books that match both their interests and their curiosity.

“This activity encourages students to step outside their comfort zones and see reading as an adventure,” said Boepple. “By presenting books in a fun, interactive way, we help students discover new favorites and develop a stronger connection to reading.”

The Book Tasting program will take place at all five elementary schools over the course of several weeks, ensuring every 3rd–6th grade student has an opportunity to participate in this special reading experience. This session focuses on 6 fiction genres: historical fiction, science fiction, realistic fiction, fantasy, suspense/horror, and mystery. All books sampled during the event are available for future checkout in each school’s library.

USD 428 remains committed to promoting literacy and creating innovative opportunities that inspire a lifelong love of learning among its students. For more information, please contact the District Education Center at 620-793-1500.
