Roger L. Hanhardt, 76, Hays, died Monday, July 11, 2022 at HaysMed.
He was born June 17, 1946 in Great Bend, the son of Albert and Ella (Folkerts) Hanhardt. Roger grew up in Albert and graduated from Pawnee Rock High School in 1964. Throughout high school he enjoyed playing basketball and met many good people who remained lifelong friends.
In 1964, he graduated from Kansas School of Barbering in Wichita and worked briefly before he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam as an operating room tech (surgical) in the 36th Evacuation Hospital from 1965-1968. In the fall of 1969, he enrolled at Kansas State University, graduating in 1972 with a B.S. Degree in secondary education.
He spent 20 years in sales working at numerous car dealerships and VICKERS Petroleum, Diamond Shamrock, and Magic Chef. In 1996, he attended the Missouri School of Auctioneering, a pursuit he really enjoyed. He reinstated his barber license and for 14 years, successfully ran Vintage Barber Shop in Hays.
On May 19, 2001 he was united in marriage to Sally Jo (Mapes) Pfannenstiel in Albert, and they celebrated 21 years of marriage. Roger was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and the VFW. He loved cars, his dogs, and was an avid K-State football fan.
Survivors include his wife Sally Jo of Hays, two stepsons: Jesse Pfannenstiel of Topeka and Andrew Pfannenstiel of Colorado Springs, CO, one brother: Don Hanhardt and wife Marty of Albert, and three grandchildren: Sophia, Brooks, and Scarlett Pfannenstiel.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at Peace Lutheran Church in Albert. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hays. Inurnment will be at a later date in Mt. Allen Cemetery, Hays. Memorials may be made payable to Disabled American Veterans, Peace Lutheran Church, or to Messiah Lutheran Church.
