The school year is coming to a close and the Great Bend Public Library is ready to fill in. On June 2, the library will host its Summer Kick-Off. Adult Services Librarian Erin Ferguson said it's a good time to get reacquainted with the library and sign up for summer programming.

"We do this to remind everyone we have a bunch of events during the summer," she said. "Starting at 5, we are having Jimmy Dee and the Fabulous Destinations come and kick us off. Everyone is welcome to bring their own chairs and that sort of thing and enjoy a free concert on our lawn."

Concert-goers can enjoy free Sno-cones from Mike and Ice from 5-6 p.m., and sign themselves and their children up for summer reading programs. At 7 p.m., those 18 and older can move into the air-conditioned indoors for Summer Movie Night. Free popcorn and water will be provided.

This year's Summer Reading Program theme is "All Together Now." The children's schedule includes Jammin' Randy on June 7, 123 Andres on June 8, as well as a presentation from the Kansas Wetlands Education Center and the return of Kansas City-based Mad Science on dates to be determined.

"There are just a bunch of different children's events that people can come and bring their kids to," Ferguson said. "Those are usually on Wednesdays."

The Summer Reading Program is available for all ages. Those who register during the Summer Kick-Off Event will get reading logs to track their reading, a registration bag with reading logs to track their summer reading, and other goodies.
