Days off from school are usually welcomed occasions for students, but parents can sometimes feel the pressure of having to keep their children entertained throughout the day. Insert the Great Bend Recreation Commission.

Not only providing afterschool programming, Great Bend Rec Enrichment Director Garet Fitzpatrick said the Rec attempts to set up longer programs when school is not in session.

"When school is no in play, it's a great opportunity for kids to get involved in arts and crafts and meet new people," said Fitzpatrick. "They're a lot of fun. It gives the kids something to do after school and when they don't have school."

The Rec Commission is hosting a Kids Day Out activity on Friday, Feb. 23 called “Sun Power.” Students will learn how the sun provides energy through activities at Barton Community College and the Kansas Wetlands Education Center.

A wide variety of programs offered through the Rec provide a list to hopefully interest everyone.

"We pride ourselves in offering a wide range of activities for adults, seniors and youth," said Fitzpatrick. "Not all kids like sports so we offer these enrichment programs to generate that interest in people. It can bring out their artistic abilities and it's just great for the kids to get interaction and doing fun things."

This Friday’s program is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and children will be bussed to the college from the Activity Center on 18th Street. Pre-registration is required by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20. Please contact the Recreation Commission office at 793-3755, ext. 110, or stop by the office located at 1214 Stone Street for more information.
