The city of Great Bend has done various things to keep its streets in working order, including regular maintenance and a feature that allows citizens to highlight areas that need work. But some real work is about to begin. During Monday’s city council meeting, City Administrator Logan Burns outlined the upcoming project.

“This will be the biggest investment we’ve done since my time here, but we’re looking to do around $2 million,” he said.

The street project will include chip seals on the residential streets just north of Great Bend High School and east of Washington Ave. That project will also include McBride Parkway to Morphy Street, Hubbard from Broadway Ave. to 22nd Street, 21st Street from Holland to the 281 Bypass, and MacArthur Road from 7th Street to the city limit. The other project will include improvements on more significant arteries of travel.

“The first one is going to be Patton Road from 10th to K-96,” Burns said. “The next one is Broadway Ave. from McKinley to Polk. Next is Harrison from Broadway to 21st. Next, Monroe from 10th to Broadway, Washington from Quivira to the city-limits bridge.”

Other streets included are Paseo from Quivira to Washington, 12th Street from Washington Ave. to Main Street, Morton from Broadway to 19th, and Frey Street from 10th Street to the 281 Bypass. The city has also submitted a cost-share application to the Kansas Department of Transportation for Main Street from 10th to 19th Streets,  along with Broadway from Williams to Kansas Ave.
